CHICAGO — A former K-State coach is working on TV in the Big Ten this season.

Bruce Weber, a former Naismith Coach of the Year recipient who led Illinois to a national championship appearance in 2005, joins the Big Ten Network following 497 career wins and two Big Ten championships, along with an Elite 8 appearance with K-State in 2018.&nbsp;

Weber left the Wildcats after a 14-17 campaign in Manhattan last year.

MAIZE, Kan.—The Hutch High Volleyball team had their eight game winning streak snapped as they lost a pair of matches to both Newton High and host Maize South Tuesday at Maize South High School.

Hutch high dropped the match vs Newton 23-25, 25-14, 22-25 in close sets.

No. 1 ranked in the West Maize South swept the Salthawks in the 2nd match 25-17, 25-17.

Hutch High&nbsp; (27-7) closes out their regular season at Maize on Tuesday prior to KSHAA Sub-State action on October 22nd.

Two of the three teams with only one loss in the Jayhawk West square off Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.

The No. 19-ranked Blue Dragons play host to the defending Jayhawk West and Region VI champion Butler Grizzlies at 6 p.m. at the Sports Arena in the first of two matchups between the two teams this season.

The match will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.

Entering play on Wednesday night, Seward County has a 0.5 game lead over the Blue Dragons at 10-1 in league play. Hutchinson (22-8) is at 9-1 and Butler is 8-1. Hutchinson and Seward County have given the other their only league losses. Butler's lone league loss was to Dodge City.

Hutchinson has won its last four matches, all league matches. That streak includes a sweep of then No. 12 Seward County on October 1 at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons are averaging 11.34 kills per set, hitting .232 as a team. Hutchinson is also averaging 1.80 blocks, 12.95 digs and 1.95 service aces per set.

The Hutchinson Community College Women's Soccer team looks to extend its four-match winning streak and maintain its portion of first place in the Jayhawk West on Wednesday trip to play the Dodge City Conquistadors.

Kickoff at Dodge City's Memorial Stadium is at 5:30 p.m.

The Blue Dragons moved up four spots in the latest national rankings with a 2-0 victory over then-No. 12 Barton and a 3-1 victory over Garden City last week.

Hutchinson and Barton are tied at the top of the Jayhawk West standings with 24 points. Barton is 8-1 and the Blue Dragons are 8-2. The Dragons have three regular-season games remaining with Dodge City, Cowley and Barton.

The Blue Dragons won the first meeting with the Conquistadors this season 6-0 on September 14 at the Salthawk Sports Complex.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/maher_aimee_xuac">Aimee Maher</a>&nbsp;had a hat trick and a career-high seven points to lead a dominant Hutchinson performance.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/lowe_hadlie_mqp8">Hadlie Lowe</a>&nbsp;and Julia De Souza each had a career-high three assists in that game.

The freshman kicker from Maize was named the Jayhawk Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Segraves had career highs for number of field goals and long field goal on Saturday. Segraves was 4 of 4 on field goals, making from 35, 33, 45 and a career-long 46 yards. He was also 5 of 5 on extra-point attempts for a career single-game high 17 points.

Segraves is the first kicker since Kevin Coleman in 2004 to make four field goals in a single game in Blue Dragon history.

Segraves is the second Blue Dragon this season to earn KJCCC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/roper_darby_wdm8">Darby Roper</a>&nbsp;earned the honor in Week 2.

For the second time in three weeks, Hutchinson Community College women's soccer players&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/lowe_hadlie_mqp8">Hadlie Lowe</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/quarles_madison_h89v">Madison Quarles</a>&nbsp;swept Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week honors.

Lowe was named the league's Division I Women's Soccer Player of the Week and Quarles was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Week after the No. 15-ranked Blue Dragons defeated No. 12 Barton 2-0 and Garden City 3-1 last week.

Two weeks ago Lowe, a sophomore forward from Wichita, and Quarles, a sophomore from Olathe, swept Player and Keeper of the Week honors.

Six different times this season, the Blue Dragons (11-2, 8-2 Jayhawk West) have earned KJCCC weekly honors. Aimee Mayer was named Player of the Week on September 20 and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/felix-cardona_olivia_1k3f">Olivia Felix-Cardona</a>&nbsp;was the Goalkeeper of the Week on September 6.

Lowe scored three goals, including a pair of markers in a shutout victory over No. 12 Barton.

Lowe had two goals against Barton and added another in a 3-1 win over Garden City. Lowe now has 12 goals and 31 points this season. She ranks third in both categories in the Jayhawk Conference.

Quarles made a career-high nine saves to help the No. 19 ranked Blue Dragons to a key 2-0 Jayhawk West victory over No. 12 Barton in Quarles' lone action last week.

Quarles recorded her third shutout of the season. She kept the high-scoring Cougars off the scoreboard, making a highlight-reed kick save in the second half on a scramble in front of the net after a Barton corner kick.

Quarles now leads the Jayhawk in save percentage (.864) and goals-against average (0.58).

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The 12-5 (2-3 Big 12) Kansas Jayhawks will return to Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena to take on the 8-8 (3-2 Big 12) TCU Horned Frogs on Wednesday (October 12) at 6:30 p.m. CT. Fans can also watch the match on Big 12 Now&nbsp;on ESPN+.

The Jayhawks first saw action against the TCU Horned Frogs in 1999 with Kansas edging TCU 3-2. Kansas leads the all-time record 17-4. KU and TCU last met on November 20, 2021 where the Jayhawks defeated the Horned Frogs 3-1. Senior Jenny Mosser led Kansas with 14 kills for the match, while freshman Caroline Bien had 12 kills. Freshman Camryn Turner paced KU with 38 assists and 20 digs to go along with six kills. Senior Rachel Langs added eight total blocks, while junior Kennedy Farris recorded 15 digs for the match. As a team, KU outhit TCU .220 to .060 and recorded 21 team blocks to TCU’s eight.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones believes the NFL should allow video review of roughing-the-passer penalties after his controversial call — the second in as many days — nearly cost the Kansas City Chiefs in their come-from-behind 30-29 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night.

The Chiefs had just scored to trim their deficit to 17-7 when Jones stripped Raiders quarterback Derek Carr from behind just before halftime. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle landed on Carr while also coming up with the ball — replays showed it was clearly loose and that Jones cleanly recovered — but referee Carl Cheffers threw a flag for roughing the passer.

The play happened with less than two minutes to go and was not reviewed.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid stormed off the sideline to argue with every official within earshot. And after the teams traded field goals, leaving the Raiders ahead 20-10 at halftime, Reid cornered Cheffers again as they headed to the locker room.

"The quarterback is in the pocket and he's in a passing posture. He gets full protection of all the aspects of what we give the quarterback in a passing posture," Cheffers told a pool reporter after the game. "My ruling was the defender landed on him with full body weight. The quarterback is protected from being tackled with full body weight."

That explanation didn't sit well in the Kansas City locker room.

"It's costing teams games," Jones said. "How should I tackle people? How should I not roll on him? I'm trying my best. I'm 325 pounds, OK? What do you want me to do? I'm going full speed trying to get the quarterback."

When players emerged for the second half, Kansas City fans booed Cheffers more loudly than the hated Raiders (1-4), and the call — and the energized Arrowhead Stadium — seemed to galvanize their team. Travis Kelce had three of his fourth TD catches in the second second half and the defense made a stand in the final minute to escape with the win.

"I've seen (Reid) angry," Mahomes said later, "but not about a call on the football field."

The call came one day after Atlanta defensive tackle Grady Jarrett was flagged by referee Jerome Boger for a seemingly innocuous tackle of Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady. The penalty gave the Buccaneers a first down and allowed them to run out the clock on a 21-15 victory, rather than giving the Falcons a chance to drive for the win.

"What I had was the defender grabbed the quarterback while he was still in the pocket, and unnecessarily throwing him to the ground," Boger told a pool reporter after the game. "That is what I was making my decision based upon."

The NFL was criticized for its failure to protect quarterbacks after Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was taken off the field on a stretcher following a violent hit in a game against Cincinnati. Tagovailoa sustained a concussion when his head slammed to the turf on a tackle by the Bengals' Josh Tupou, who was not flagged on the play.

In the NFL rulebook, it states: "Any physical acts against a player who is in a passing posture (i.e. before, during, or after a pass) which, in the referee's judgment, are unwarranted by the circumstances of the play will be called as fouls."

The rulebook also notes: "When in doubt about a roughness call or potentially dangerous tactic against the quarterback, the referee should always call roughing the passer."

Jones offered a solution: Allow replays of roughing-the-passer calls.

"Especially in critical situations in games," he said. "We've got to be able to review it in the booth, you know what I mean? I think that's the next step for the NFL as a whole. If we're going to call it penalty at that high (of rate), then we've got to be able to review it and make sure, because sometimes looks can be deceiving."

Meanwhile, the Chiefs have had plenty of conflicts with Cheffers in the past.

The biggest came during the 2016 playoffs against Pittsburgh, when Cheffers called left tackle Eric Fisher for holding that negated what would have been a tying two-point conversion. The Steelers won 18-16 to advance to the AFC title game, and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said Cheffers "shouldn't even be able to work at ... Foot Locker."

Their opinion of the referee surely didn't improve Monday night.

"You want to protect the players in all aspects of the game, but at the same time, there's a commonsense factor," Mahomes said. "The refs watch tape and they practice, just like we do. I'm sure they'll go back and make the corrections."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs headed off to the locker room facing a big hole against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night, everything from the big plays to the officiating calls going the way of their longtime AFC West rivals.

One call in particular lit a fire under them.

It was a dubious penalty on Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones for roughing Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, and nobody in the Kansas City locker room could believe it. But rather than stew over it, or lament their 10-point deficit, Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs used it as motivation to storm from behind for the 30-29 victory.

"There was anger just about how we had played up to that point," said Mahomes, who threw four touchdown passes to tight end Travis Kelce. "We needed everybody to go out there and take the fight to them."

The Raiders still had a chance when Davante Adams, who earlier had hauled in a 58-yard touchdown catch, added a 48-yarder with 4:29 to go. It came after Kelce's final touchdown catch, when Kansas City failed on a 2-point try that left the score 30-23. But rather than kick a tying extra point, Raiders coach Josh McDaniels also went for 2.

Josh Jacobs, who had shredded the Chiefs defense all night, was stuffed at the goal line.

The Raiders got the ball back one last time with 2:29 left, and a long third-down pass to Adams down the Kansas City sideline appeared to get them in field-goal range. But the play was reviewed and Adams failed to get both feet in bounds, and Carr threw incomplete on fourth-and-1 with 47 seconds left before the Chiefs ran out the clock.

"We didn't fall apart on each other," Chiefs safety Justin Reid said. "We battled through adversity."

Carr finished with 241 yards passing, and Jacobs ran for 133 yards and a score, as the Raiders lost to the Chiefs (4-1) for the fourth straight time. Daniel Carlson was 3 for 3 on field goals, extending his streak to 38 in a row.

What he wouldn't have given for a chance at No. 39.

"We had a chance," Daniels said. "We just didn't make one or two plays there at the end to finish it."

The game of twists and turns began with the Raiders failing to score on their opening drive for the first time all season.

Facing fourth-and-inches in their own territory, McDaniels sent his offense back on the field. But rather than run Jacobs up the middle, or sneak with Carr, he aired it out to Adams, who ran past Rashad Fenton for the 58-yard TD catch.

Adams and the Raiders continued to pick on Fenton later in the half, when a pass interference moved Las Vegas deep into Chiefs territory. Adams drew another penalty on Jaylen Watson in the end zone, setting up Jacobs' short TD plunge.

It was 17-0 when Kelce finally reached the end zone for the Chiefs, but it appeared as if the momentum had turned when Jones stripped Carr from behind and landed him. But despite the ball clearly coming out, and the Pro Bowl defensive tackle coming away with it, referee Carl Cheffers threw a penalty flag and called Jones for roughing the passer.

The questionable penalty came one day after another questionable roughing call by referee Jerome Boger on Atlanta's Grady Jarrett against Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady sealed the Buccaneers' win over the Falcons.

Mahomes said: "It wasn't the greatest call in the world. You have to find a way to bounce back and we did."

The Chiefs opened the second half with a 75-yard march that Kelce capped with his second TD reception. And after they forced a quick punt, the Chiefs went 57 yards and watched Kelce haul in his third to give Kansas City a 24-20 lead.

Midway through the fourth quarter, it was the Chiefs who got a penalty gift.

They were leading 24-23 when fill-in kicker Matthew Wright, whose 59-yarder before halftime set the franchise record for longest field goal, yanked a 37-yarder left. But defensive end Malcolm Koonce was called for holding, giving Kansas City an automatic first down, and Mahomes found Kelce once again four plays later to extend the lead to 30-24.

The teams traded touchdowns — and missed conversions — down the stretch as the Chiefs escaped with the win.

"We're close but close doesn't count in this game," Carr said. "It's frustrating."

Raiders: TE Darren Waller left with a hamstring injury in the first half. TE Foster Moreau (knee) already was unavailable despite returning to practice Saturday.

Chiefs: DT Tershawn Wharton tore his left ACL early in the game. ... OL Trey Smith (pectoral muscle) was inactive after starting the first 21 games of his career. DE Mike Danna (calf) and K Harrison Butker (ankle) also were inactive.

The Raiders get next week off before facing the Texans on Oct. 23 in Las Vegas.

The Chiefs host the Bills on Sunday in a rematch of January's playoff overtime thriller.

🏈 Chiefs hold on for wild 30-29 victory over rival Raiders

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team had just one match last week, but was rewarded in the latest NJCAA rankings.

After a Jayhawk West road sweep at Cloud County, the Blue Dragons moved up one spot to No. 19 in the Division I Volleyball Rankings. 

Hutchinson (22-8 overall, 9-1 in the Jayhawk) is in second place in the Jayhawk West behind Seward County, who is 21-5 overall and 10-1 in the league and came in at No. 15 in the pool. Butler received votes in this week's poll and is third in the Jayhawk West, sitting at 17-10 overall and 8-1 in the league. 

Since the Blue Dragon Classic, a tournament the Blue Dragons struggled going 1-3 and fell out of the national rankings, Hutchinson has won four matches in a row, including a sweep over nationally ranked Seward County to split the regular season meetings with the Saints.  

Hutchinson plays host to Butler in a crucial Jayhawk match 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Arena. 

Salt Lake overtook the No. 1 spot in the rankings with Florida Southwestern dropping to No. 2. Indian Hills remained No. 3.

The Blue Dragons defeated previous No. 12 Barton 2-0 and Garden City 3-1 last week to improve to 11-2 overall, 8-2 in the Jayhawk West. The 24 points in the league are tied for first.

Butler remains sixth in the nation while Barton dropped to No. 17 in the poll. Eastern Florida State remains the top team in the country.

The Cougars are 12-2 overall, 8-1 in the conference. Butler leads the Jayhawk East at 13-2-1 overall, 9-0-1 in the Jayhawk.

Hutchinson travels to Dodge City Wednesday looking for the regular season sweep over the Conquistadors after beating Dodge City at home 6-0 back on Sept. 14.

WICHITA – After a roller-coaster of a day at Crestview Country Club's North Course, the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team is tied for third after two rounds of the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational.

The Blue Dragons are tied with Drake University for third place after 36 holes on Monday 6-over 574. The Dragons are five strokes off the pace set by Wichita State, which shot 569. Utah Valley State is second at 571.

Hutchinson opened the tournament with a morning round of 8-over 292. The Blue Dragons were as low as 6-under in the first 18 holes. The Blue Dragons were as low as 8-under in the second round and finished at 2-under 282, a 10-stroke improvement from the morning round.

The final round will start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Crestview North.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/galvin_louis_mscz">Louis Galvin</a>&nbsp;is the low Blue Dragon after 36 holes. Galvin is tied for third at 2-under 140. Galvin had an opening-round 69 with four birdies and two bogeys. Galvin finished the day with an even-par 71. Galvin is tied with Wichita State's Dawson Lewis and South Dakota's Nick Lamotte.

Saffell and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/lindstrom_alex_7wqw">Alex Lindstrom</a>&nbsp;are both tied for 12th at 1-over 143.

Lindstrom had rounds of 71 and 72 on Monday. Lindstrom had a pair of eagles, one in each round on Monday.

Saffell turned his tournament around after a 6-over 77 in the opening round. Saffell carded seven birdies in a 5-under round of 66 in the afternoon round.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/clemons_dominic_18vf">Dominic Clemons</a>&nbsp;is tied for 35th at 148 after rounds of 73 and 75.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/ross_louis_7khj">Louis Ross</a>&nbsp;is tied for 55th at 153 after rounds of 79 and 74.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2022-23/bios/langstraat_joey_ntea">Joey Langstraat</a>, playing as an individual, is tied for 46th at 151 after rounds of 76 and 75.

Indian Hills is the only other NJCAA team in the Shocker Invitational field. The Warriors are tied for fifth at 579.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper said he ran out of patience with Matt Rhule's inability to get the franchise "over the hump."

Tepper fired his second coach in four years on Monday, dismissing Rhule five games into his third losing season.

Rhule, the first NFL coach to be fired this season, went 11-27 with Carolina and leaves with roughly $40 million remaining on the seven-year, guaranteed $62 million contract he signed in 2020, when he made the jump from Baylor to the pros.

Defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach Steve Wilks will serve as interim coach.

Tepper said in April he would be patient with Rhule, saying it takes time to build a winner in the NFL.

"It's a funny thing, that thing called patience," Tepper said Monday during a 30-minute news conference. "If you ask the average fan out there, they would think I was ridiculously patient. ... I think you have to show the right amount of patience and (look at) the progress that is being made. Are we winning more? Are we progressing in different ways? In all of those situations we spoke of, it hasn't been that."

Two of Rhule's longtime assistants — defensive coordinator Phil Snow and assistant special teams coach Ed Foley — were also fired. Both coaches previously worked for Rhule at Temple and Baylor.

Rhule did not respond to voice and text messages on Monday.

The Panthers fell to 1-4 with Sunday's 37-15 loss to San Francisco — their 11th defeat in the last 12 games — as 49ers fans made Bank of America Stadium their East Coast home.

Tepper admitted the blowout loss was a factor in his decision.

"There's numerous reasons why you make a decision," Tepper said. "Might have been a little bit of lost intensity on the field (Sunday), which was different from the first four games."

Tepper will have to pay out the rest of the deal unless Rhule takes another job. In that case, the money he makes will count against what he's owed by the Panthers.General manager Scott Fitterer's job appears safe for now and Tepper indicated he would like a "better balance" in roster decisions between his GM and next head coach.Rhule had more power to shape the roster than Fitterer did.Rhule's teams went 5-11 in 2020 and 5-12 last year. The Panthers hoped Rhule could turn things around in his third year as he did at Baylor and at Temple before that.The team had constant turnover at quarterback under Rhule, with Teddy Bridgewater as the starter in 2020 and Sam Darnold and Cam Newton getting starts last year.The Panthers traded for Baker Mayfield this offseason. But the 2018 No. 1 overall draft pick has been awful, ranking last in the NFL in ESPN's total quarterback rating. Mayfield has completed 54.9% of his passes and is averaging fewer than 200 yards passing per game with four touchdowns and four interceptions.The poor play at the game's most important position put unsustainable pressure on Carolina's defense. Under Rhule, the Panthers were 1-27 when allowing an opponent to score 17 or more points.Rhule was unpopular when the season began and fans targeted him even more after the Panthers lost their season opener to the Cleveland Browns in what was dubbed the "Baker Bowl." Chants of "Fire Rhule!" got louder with each game at home, where the Panthers are 1-3.Tepper wouldn't discuss his strategy for finding a new coach or even disclose who will lead the search. The 53-year-old Wilks will be in consideration for the full-time job."No promises were made, but if he does an incredible job, he has to be in consideration," Tepper said.Wilks spent one year as Arizona's coach in 2018, going 3-13.Wilks becomes the second Black coach to lead the Panthers. The other, Perry Fewell, served as interim coach after Rivera was fired and went 0-4.Wilks joined Brian Flores' lawsuit in April, alleging racist hiring practices by the NFL when there are vacancies for coaches and general managers. Wilks joined the lawsuit along with Ray Horton.The lawsuit alleges that Wilks was discriminated against by the Cardinals in 2018 when he was hired as a "bridge coach" but was given no meaningful chance to succeed.Tepper said he wouldn't rule out hiring another college coach, but indicated that history suggests it might be better to find a coach with more NFL experience.Tepper fired Ron Rivera, the winningest coach in franchise history, with four games left in 2019 with the Panthers at 5-7.The Panthers have not been to the playoffs since 2017 — the year before Tepper bought the team — and have not won a playoff game since winning the NFC championship in 2015 to reach the franchise's second Super Bowl."We have to build a culture of winning," Tepper said.
