<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/kedzior_dylan_601l">Dylan Kedzior</a>&nbsp;did not see much of the field during his freshman year two seasons ago.

The third-year sophomore, who was a freshman in Drew Dallas' first season as the head coach of the Hutchinson Community College football team in 2020, was a special teams player who made the most of the his time when he jogged with the unit onto the field. He did rotate through on offense - the Claremore, Oklahoma native rushed for 221 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns.

Had the country only knew what was coming ...

Hutchinson went on to win the NJCAA Division I national championship, 29-27 over Snow Colllege, and soon backed that up with a 49-19 Jayhawk Conference playoff title win over Garden City and finally a 66-34 Salt City Bowl win over Hinds the next season – both in 2021 with the national championship in the spring and the bowl game in the fall.

With the Blue Dragons losing top running backs to NCAA programs – the national championship MVP Tye Edwards transferring to UT-San Antonio and Anwar Lewis transferring to Jacksonville State – the Blue Dragons had to find a new tailback to rely on.

With 5:47 remaining in the fourth quarter of the fourth game of the regular season on the road at Coffeyville on September 24, Kedzior was inserted at running back and led the charge down the field, scoring the go-ahead and game-winning two-yard touchdown with 1:17 remaining in the game. The touchdown, looking back at it, seemed to be a season-defining moment for him and the Blue Dragons.

"It's been awesome getting to play this season," Kedzior said. "I'm so blessed to see the success that I've seen so far. It's been great."

And now Kedzior, who was a part of the national title-winning team in 2021, will return to Little Rock, Arkansas for the 8 p.m. kickoff Wednesday, Dec. 14 at War Memorial Stadium when top-seeded Hutchinson takes on the third seed Iowa Western, which the Blue Dragons snuck by against on November 12 in Council Bluffs in the final game of the regular season, 29-28.

"I'm extremely excited," Kedzior said. "It's something we've looked forward to all year and what we've been talking about since day one of camp. This has been the expectation the entire time. We're not going to settle for anything less. It's huge to be playing in this game. We're all ready, and we're counting down the days until Wednesday for sure."

This season, Kedzior has eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards, passing the mark with a 74-yard touchdown run in the NJCAA national playoff semifinal win over Coffeyville 38-7 last Saturday at Gowans Stadium. He ran for 156 yards that night as well. Kedzior had five games this season where he rushed for more than 100 yards, including one where he rushed for 230 yards and three touchdowns in the 27-19 win over Butler. He has 13 total touchdowns this season, including a 76-yard touchdown reception against Iowa Western.

In the big road win over the Reivers, Kedzior's long touchdown reception was designed for him to fake block for a screen and was wide open down the field. He totaled 212 total yards in the game.

Kedzior was honored as the Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Week after the win over Coffeyville. He was also tabbed the conference Offensive Player of the Year, one of the top honors in the Jayhawk Conference along with Dallas earning the Coach of the Year pin – the second time in his three seasons with the Blue Dragons he has received the honor.

The 6-foot 205-pound back currently holds offers from Ball State, Eastern Michigan, UTEP, Old Dominion, Illinois State, McNeese State, Buffalo, Northern Iowa, North Carolina-Charlotte, Western Illinois, and St. Francis.

With under a week of preparation left before the lights turn on at War Memorial Stadium, Hutchinson and Iowa Western will be familiar with its schemes and players having played each other just in early November. Kedzior said they will find ways to put the ball in the end zone and learn from their mistakes in the first matchup. He added having the luxury of all three phases of the game being proficient for the Blue Dragons, especially in the last matchup against Iowa Western with a blocked punt by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/hamilton-jordan_jermaine_p88u">Jermaine Hamilton-Jordan</a>&nbsp;and returned for a touchdown by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/claytor_jaimelle_g9fn">Jaimelle Claytor</a>.

"It's obvious that we have not only singular, but multiple playmakers in each different phase of the game," Kedzior said. "We've got game-changers at every position. That's just kind of what we do, that's Hutch football. It's the Hutch factory. You come in here with amazing players around you, (and) you're going to be forced to compete and produce on the field."

The national championship will be televised at 8 p.m. on ESPNU. The Blue Dragons look to end the year with two national championships in the past three seasons and put at stake its 17-game winning streak, the longest current win streak in the nation.

"It's great to see us all with the success as a team," Kedzior said, "going out there and rallying to try to win this natty."

🏈 Kedzior powering Blue Dragon backfield in second go-around at National Title

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) —&nbsp;Kevin McCullar Jr. heard the boos and catcalls from the Missouri student section hours before tipoff, when Kansas first emerged from the tunnel for pregame warmups. The noise rose to an ear-splitting roar as the bitter rivals began their first showdown in Columbia in more than a decade.

All that McCullar heard by the end was the haunting refrain of “Rock Chalk Jayhawk.”

McCullar finished with a season-high 21 points, Jalen Wilson had team highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds, and the sixth-ranked Jayhawks pounded their old Big 12 foe 95-67 on Saturday night in just their second meeting since the Tigers bolted for the SEC.

“The atmosphere was electric tonight,” McCullar said. “We just tried to embrace the environment.”

KJ Adams Jr. also had a career-high 19 points and Gradey Dick scored 16 for the Jayhawks (9-1), who romped past the Tigers last year in Lawrence but were making their first visit to Columbia since Feb. 4, 2012, the year Missouri switched conferences.

The fevered pitch for the latest showdown of century-old rivals evaporated in the opening minutes, when Kansas raced to a 30-16 lead. It swelled to 26 points early in the second half before the Jayhawks cruised to the finish.

“In all honesty, you want to be in environments where people care,” Kansas coach Bill Self said, “and it was obviously a caring environment today. The crowd was great. And I thought our guys really did a good job of not letting them go on runs that could have really gotten the crowd more into the game.”

D’Moi Hodge and Nick Honor scored 15 apiece to lead the Tigers (9-1), who had been one of 10 remaining unbeatens in Division I men’s basketball at the start of the day. Noah Carter finished with 12 points and DeAndre Gholston had 11.

“There’s a reason why Kansas is top 10 in the country. There’s a reason why Bill Self is a Hall of Fame coach,” Tigers counterpart Dennis Gates said. “I thought we showed and displayed different things throughout the game where we almost had runs going, but something — a missed free throw or a missed 3 — kind of took the wind out of our sails.”

There are rivalries in college basketball and then there is Kansas-Missouri, marked by a pervasive hatred predating James Naismith and his peach baskets to actual guerrilla warfare along their border in the years leading up to the Civil War.

One fan walking through the concourse of Mizzou Arena on Saturday even wore a hat that read “Remember Quantrill” — as in the Confederate sympathizer William Quantrill, who led a massacre in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1863.

So it wasn’t surprising that the smoke billowing out of the tunnel leading to the Tigers’ locker room seemed a little thicker Saturday night. The student section and their notorious bunch known as “the Antlers” a little more vulgar. And the roars of their first sellout crowd this season just a little bit louder.

It didn’t take long for the Jayhawks to silence all of them.

After missing their first two shots, they proceeded to hit 11 straight, including five by Dick. Two of his were effortless 3-pointers, the second giving Kansas a 28-14 lead and prompting Tigers coach Dennis Gates to finally call a timeout.

“I think that gets us jacked up to play,” Adams said of the atmosphere. “It really set a tone for us.”

Not even the return of Hall of Fame basketball coach Norm Stewart nor football coach Gary Pinkel could shake Missouri from its malaise. The Tigers missed 16 of their first 22 shots, allowing the Jayhawks to establish a 36-17 lead — to the chagrin of three-time Cy Young Award winner and former Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer, who also was in the crowd.

Dick and Adams had 15 points apiece by halftime as Kansas took a 50-33 lead to the locker room.

Nothing changed there: Missouri turned the ball over on four of its first six second-half possessions, and the Jayhawks turned the miscues into nine straight points. And despite a second-half slump that allowed Missouri to put together an 11-2 run, the Jayhawks were never seriously threatened down the stretch.

“Every segment of the game is a learning experience to get better. You have to learn to win on the road,” Self said, “and I thought we did a pretty good job with that tonight.”

Kansas got sloppy midway through the second half but otherwise was dominant on both ends of the floor. The Jayhawks were 10 of 22 from the 3-point arc, caused 21 turnovers and had a season-high-tying 24 assists to just eight for the Tigers.

Missouri has played at a breakneck pace this season, scoring a nation-leading 23.9% of its points on fast breaks. But the more athletic Jayhawks outran the Tigers on Saturday night, outscoring them 22-10 in transition.

The Jayhawks begin a three-game homestand against No. 14 Indiana next Saturday.

The Tigers play Central Florida in the Orange Bowl Classic next Saturday in Sunrise, Florida.

🏀 No. 6 Kansas Routs Mizzou 95-67

DODGE CITY, Kan. — The Dragons ended a four-game losing skid Saturday in Dodge City, but the victory did not come easily.&nbsp;

Hutchinson kept a four-point buffer for most of the final five minutes until the Conqs made their move to take the lead.&nbsp;

Dodge City went up by one with 15 seconds left after a steal and layup.&nbsp;

An errant pass to Franklin one play earlier led to the breakaway points.

Franklin called for the ball and went to work offensively. His shot from the right elbow clanked off the back iron after he nearly turned the ball over.&nbsp;

But not so fast. Just before the buzzer, the center official clearly signaled for a foul on the shot.&nbsp;

Officials put four-tenths of a second back on the clock and sent Franklin to the line.&nbsp;

Franklin's first free throw crawled around the hoop and sneaked in to tie the game at 112.

Dodge City took a timeout to ice Franklin and plan for his miss or make.&nbsp;

Franklin confidently drained the second free throw. The Conqs inbounded the ball but not cleanly, as time expired before Dodge City could attempt a desperation heave.&nbsp;

FINAL: Hutchinson 113 Dodge City 112

The Dragons had lost four straight and five of the last six before Saturday's victory.&nbsp;

The losing streak came after the Dragons ran up to No. 4 in the national poll behind a perfect 7-0 start.&nbsp;

Six Dragons scored in double figures, led by Franklin's 25.

The Conqs got 28 from Jason Edwards and another 26 from Shawn Warrior.&nbsp;

Hutchinson wraps up the first semester schedule by hosting Colby at the Sports Arena on Monday night at 7:30pm.

Dodge City host Cloud County on Monday night to see who takes the lead in the KJCCC at the Christmas break.

LAWRENCE — Dajuan Harris Jr. grew up in the shadows of the University of Missouri, and he played his prep basketball at Rock Bridge High School, just a short drive down South Providence Road from the heart of the college campus.

Imagine what folks back there thought as they watched him lead Kansas to the national championship last season.

Harris will no doubt get an earful from them Saturday, along with the rest of the sixth-ranked Jayhawks, when they head across the state line for the first time in nearly a decade. Kansas is set to face unbeaten Missouri in the latest renewal of one of the most bitter rivalries in college sports.

"When I grew, I had some family members that don't like KU," Harris admitted. "But really, KU has always been the best. The people that I've been around, they didn't really care about me going to KU. It was just the outside people that be saying stuff. My family really don't care about that stuff."

The series known as the Border War traces its history to actual war: guerilla fighting in western Missouri and eastern Kansas in the 1850s and '60s over whether slavery would be legal in the proposed state of Kansas. Dozens died during the frequent raids and skirmishes, and names such as William Quantrill became famous if not notorious.

Fierce competition between Missouri and Kansas — the schools, not the states — likewise built to fevered pitch over more than a century. Longtime Tigers coach Norm Stewart so despised Kansas that he instructed bus drivers to fuel up before crossing the state line lest they spend a penny in the Sunflower State. And the Tigers' notorious student section, known as the Antlers, have a penchant for calling up Kansas players and coaches at all hours of the night before games.

"Missouri-Illinois is a good rivalry. I thought there was a little bit of respect in that rivalry," said Jayhawks coach Bill Self, who spent three seasons with the Illini before taking over Kansas and winning a pair of national titles.

"With Kansas-Missouri," Self said, "from a fan standpoint, I don't know if there's as much respect as there is flat-out dislike or hate. And I think that's what makes it a great rivalry. I don't think you could have Larry Brown or Norm Stewart or Roy Williams or Quin Snyder or Dennis Gates or myself enjoy a rivalry as much without those emotions involved."

Self claimed to have never had a bad experience playing at Missouri, though he did acknowledge "getting our butts beat there before." The Jayhawks lost the last time they played in Columbia on Feb. 4, 2012.

The schools played again that season in Lawrence and Kansas won, but they didn't meet on the hardwood again until last year. That's because for nearly a decade, Self steadfastly refused to play the Tigers, who put the Big 12 in peril when they joined Texas A&amp;M in jilting their longtime conference home for the Southeastern Conference.

When the series resumed, the Jayhawks took out any lingering angst on the hapless Tigers with a 102–65 victory at Allen Fieldhouse. It was the most lopsided result in the long-simmering feud in more than 40 years.

"When we play Kansas State," Self said, "it's a rivalry, make no mistake. But it doesn't feel quite the same as the historic rivalry that's existed between Missouri and Kansas, going way back before the universities even had basketball teams."

The teams no longer play twice a year, so the history — or hatred — is not as naturally ingrained. But even players that grew up in South Carolina or Texas or some other far-flung locale eventually learn about it, whether by lessons from the coaching staffs or messages passed on to them by former players.

"This is one that people have circled," said Gates, who's in his first season coaching the Tigers, "and they make plans to be back, and it's exciting, man. It's one of the longest-standing rivalries. There's some historical perspective in it as well, non-basketball. But it's a rivalry that I think college basketball should continue to have."

All rivalries are better when there's something riding on the outcome, and there is much at stake this season.

The Jayhawks (8-1) are again among the nation's top teams, while the Tigers — led by their soft-spoken yet confident coach and an influx of Division I transfers — are 10-0, one of the last 10 unbeaten teams in men's major college basketball.

"We know it's going to be a big-time game. There's going to be a lot of people here," said Missouri guard Nick Honor, a transfer from Clemson. "The biggest thing is pride. Getting those bragging rights for the next year."

🏀 MBB: No. 6 Kansas visits rival Mizzou for first time in 10 years

LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Grant Wahl, one of the most well-known soccer writers in the United States, died early Saturday while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands. He was 48.

U.S. media seated near him said Wahl fell back in his seat in a section of Lusail Stadium reserved for journalists during extra time of the game, and reporters adjacent to him called for assistance.

Emergency services workers responded very quickly, treated him for 20 or 30 minutes on the spot and then took him out on a stretcher, said Keir Radnedge, a veteran British sports journalist who was working nearby at the time.

The World Cup organizing committee said he was taken to Doha's Hamad General Hospital, but it did not state a cause of death. “We are in touch with the US Embassy and relevant local authorities to ensure the process of repatriating the body is in accordance with the family’s wishes,” it said in a statement.

Wahl, who wrote for Sports Illustrated for a decade then started his own website, was a major voice in introducing professional soccer to an American public more used to seeing the sport as a school-level game. He also brought a critical eye to the organizational bodies of the international sport.

He “really helped put soccer on the mainstream sports map in the States,” Radnedge said.

“Grant had a strong moral compass, on where sports should be and how sport ... should help set standards for people,” he said. “There was never any doubt that Grant was on the side of the good guys in wanting soccer to make the best of itself.”

Wahl was covering his eighth World Cup. He wrote Monday on his website that he had&nbsp;<a href="https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/world-cup-daily-day-22">visited a medical clinic</a>&nbsp;while in Qatar.

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.”

Wahl wrote that he tested negative for COVID-19 and sought treatment for his symptoms.

“I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno,” he wrote.

Wahl tweeted on Wednesday that he had celebrated his birthday that day.

“We could always count on Grant to deliver insightful and entertaining stories about our game, and its major protagonists,” the U.S. Soccer Federation said in a statement. “Grant’s belief in the power of the game to advance human rights was, and will remain, an inspiration to all. Grant made soccer his life’s work, and we are devastated that he and his brilliant writing will no longer be with us.”

Wahl's wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, tweeted that she was thankful for the support of her husband’s “soccer family” and friends who had reached out.

“&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/celinegounder/status/1601404727014879232?s=20&amp;t=Wpv4uCqNxr74RB-kYxrn-w">I’m in complete shock</a>,” wrote Gounder, who is an associate professor at New York University School of Medicine, an attending physician at Bellevue Hospital Center and a CBS News contributor.

U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/StateDeptSpox/status/1601419687619067904">in a tweet</a>&nbsp;that American officials were in touch with Qatari authorities “to see to it that his family’s wishes are fulfilled as expeditiously as possible."

Gay and lesbian sex is criminalized in Qatar, a conservative Muslim emirate.

Wahl wrote he was detained for 25 minutes at Ahmed Bin Ali stadium in Al Rayyan, then was let go by a security commander. Wahl said FIFA apologized to him.

Among Wahl’s work before he began covering soccer exclusively was&nbsp;<a href="https://vault.si.com/vault/2002/02/18/ahead-of-his-class-ohio-high-school-junior-lebron-james-is-so-good-that-hes-already-being-mentioned-as-the-heir-to-air-jordan">a Sports Illustrated cover story</a>&nbsp;about LeBron James in 2002, when James was a junior at St. Vincent-St. Mary High in Akron, Ohio.

“He was always pretty cool to be around. He spent a lot of time in my hometown of Akron,” James said in Philadelphia after the Los Angeles Lakers lost in overtime to the 76ers. “Any time his name would come up, I’ll always think back to me as a teenager having Grant in our building down at St. V’s. It’s a tragic loss. It’s unfortunate to lose someone as great as he was. I wish his family the best. May he rest in paradise.”

A voter at times in FIFA’s annual awards, Wahl was among 82 journalists honored last week by FIFA and the international sports press association AIPS for attending eight or more World Cups.

“His love for football was immense and his reporting will be missed by all who follow the global game,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.

Wahl graduated from Princeton in 1996 and worked for Sports Illustrated from 1996 to 2021, known primarily for his coverage of soccer and college basketball. He then launched his own website.

Wahl also worked for Fox Sports from 2012-19.

His death at the World Cup left fellow journalists covering the games stunned.

“You come to a World Cup as a journalist to work, to share the stresses, the pressures but also the enjoyments and the fascination of it — and to share that with your readers, your listeners, your viewers. That’s what Grant was doing, that’s what he enjoyed doing. Everybody recognized that enthusiasm in him,” Radnedge said.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutch High Salthawk Boys jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter and never looked back as they throttled Buhler Friday night at the SAC 69-35.&nbsp;

Hutch was led by Terrell King's 18 points, Garrett Robertson had 16 and Julian Smith chipped in 10 points. Nic Lange also finished with 9 points on the night.

Buhler was led by Ethan Stambaugh's 10 points.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutch High Girls were playing tight and hesitant in the first quarter of play versus Reno County rival Buhler trailing 14-6.&nbsp; But then the jitters subsided and the Salthawk Girls went on a 21-0 run in the 2nd quarter to lead at the half 29-19.

Hutch then cruised to a 62-44 win over the Crusaders to push their record to 2-0 with Salina South in their sights next Tuesday.

Aliyah Green paced the Salthawks with 22 points while Grace Posch chipped in 10 points and Nickerson transfer Josie McLean tallied 9. Buhler Sophomore Charlie Baxter let the Crusaders with 19 points,

Hutch (2-0) will host Salina South (1-2) Tuesday night at the SAC.

While it's unclear right now if Griner wants to ever play basketball again, she would be welcomed back with open arms by both the WNBA and USA Basketball. The WNBA season begins May 19.

Williams received 32 of the 46 first-place votes and 117 total points from AP Top 25 poll voters. TCU quarterback Max Duggan came in second with six first-place votes and 64 points. Williams has passed for 4,075 yards with an FBS-leading 37 touchdowns and just four interceptions this season.
