NEW YORK — Finalists for eight of the Associated Press' 2022 NFL awards, including the five players in contention for MVP, were revealed Wednesday on NFL Network's Good Morning Football. The list includes Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes joins other finalists Justin Jefferson and Jalen Hurts; those three are also finalists for the NFL’s AP Offensive Player of the Year award. Mahomes last won MVP in 2019.

The winners will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 9. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league completed voting before the start of the playoffs.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow also are finalists for MVP.

The Waxahachie, Texas, product was named the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Williams became just the sixth Blue Dragon player in program history to score 1,000 career points, reaching that milestone on Sunday in a 23-point effort against Cloud County.

Williams had games of 28 points in a road win against Independence and 23 against the Thunderbirds. She also averaged 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 4.5 steals last week. Her career-high six steals also came in the Cloud County game.

Williams is the fourth-leading scorer in the KJCCC at 18.0 points per game. She is No. 3 in the KJCCC in free-throw shooting at 84.1 percent and her 49 3-pointers are tied for fourth in the KJCCC.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.:&nbsp;(Transcript from KWBW Sports)&nbsp;7:10 am on BW Radio, time to turn to sports.&nbsp;&nbsp;A lot of it will start with high school basketball. Hutchinson High School, a standalone game last night, in Derby came from behind to win 55-50. Wade Meyer hit his only basket of the game, a three pointer to give Hutchinson a 48-47 lead with 2:18 to play.

It was free throws, basically the rest of the way as the Salt Hawks hold on to push their record to 12 and 0. 

Duantay King had a career high 24 points to lead the #2 ranked team in 5A Hutchinson to that victory. 

Elsewhere in Boys action, Smokey Valley downed Trinity Catholic 50-43. Wichita Defenders beat Central Christian 61-44. On the girls side, El-Saline beat Central Christian Girls 59-50. Fairfield beat Stanford 62-20 and Smoky Valley over Hutchinson Trinity Catholic 58-27. 

Derby High School's Addison Brown has been named to the McDonald's All-America basketball team, just one of 24 players in the nation named to that squad. The All-America game will be played in Houston March 28.

 #12 Iowa State holds on to beat #5 K-State 80-76. What a game in Ames. Marquese Noel led K-State with 23 points. They now dropped to 17 and 3, 6 and 2 in the Big 12. That conference is just loaded with talent. 

The NJCAA has announced details for the 2023 NJCAA Division 1 Men's and Women's Basketball Championship Finals. Both national championship contests will be nationally televised for the first time on ESPNU as part of a multiyear meteorites agreement with ESPN. The D1 Men's Championship here in Hutchinson will be Saturday, March 25th at one. The women's Championship final will be on Monday, March 27th at 7:00. 

Hutchinson sophomore guard Jaiden Garrison named the Jayhawk Conference D1 Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday. The Sophomore from Little River averaged 16 and a half points, shot 48% from the floor in wins over Indy and Cloud. 

Mya Williams of the women was named the Jayhawk Women's Basketball Player of the Week yesterday, as well as Williams had games of 28 in a road win against Independance and 23 against Cloud County. 

Jason O'Toole, athletic director at Cowley College and long time employee there, has resigned effective February 28. O'Toole declining to comment on his resignation when reached by the phone by several sources at Cowley College.

 Sophomore Demitri Brown broke a meet record on Saturday and posted the fourth best indoor long jump in Blue Dragon Men's Track and Field History. For that he has been named the Jayhawk Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week. 

And finally the Royals announcing that they have acquired left handed pitcher Josh Taylor from Boston for infielder Alberto Mandisa and a player to be named later. Taylor, who will be 30 on March 2nd, missed the 2022 season with a back injury and three seasons in the majors with Boston from 2019 to 2021 pitched to a 3.69 era, pitched in six of Boston's 11 postseason games and was very impressive with an era in the low twos. He has held left handed batters over his career to a .174 average. Mondesi, 27, was maybe the most injured Royals player in the history of that franchise. Never could stay on the field and the Royals have unloaded him.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Head coach Lance Leipold announced the addition of 13 newcomers to the Kansas football roster today. All 13 student-athletes are on campus and enrolled at Kansas for the 2023 spring semester.

Among Kansas’ newcomers, 12 come from Division I programs. Combined, they have played in 250 career games prior to coming to Kansas.

The Jayhawks added six pieces to the defensive side of the ball, including defensive end Austin Booker (Minnesota), linebacker JB Brown (Bowling Green), defensive end Patrick Joyner Jr. (Utah State), defensive tackle Gage Keys (Minnesota) cornerback Damarius McGhee (LSU) and defensive tackle Devin Phillips (Colorado State).

On the offensive side of the ball, Kansas added offensive lineman Logan Brown (Wisconsin), running back Dylan McDuffie (Georgia Tech) offensive lineman Spencer Lovell (Cal), offensive lineman Hunter Barlow (Hutchinson CC) and tight end Max Muehlberger (Oklahoma State). The Jayhawks also added two specialists in Seth Keller (Texas State) and Charlie Weinrich (Nebraska).

This newest group of Jayhawks join the 2023 recruiting class announced in December and are enrolled at Kansas for the 2023 spring semester. Freshmen Calvin Clements, Surahz Buncom, Jaden Hamm and Tony Terry are also enrolled for the 2023 spring semester.

Both national championship contests will be nationally televised for the first time on ESPNU as part of a multi-year media rights agreement with ESPN. The DI Men's Championship will be played on Saturday, March 25 at 2:00 PM ET / 1:00 PM CT. The DI Women's Championship final will be on Monday, March 27 at 8:00 PM ET / 7:00 PM CT.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Division I Men's Basketball Championship will begin Monday, March 20 in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; This year's national tournament marks the 75th anniversary of the tournament being played inside the&nbsp;historic Hutchinson Sports Arena.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Division I Women's Basketball Championship tips off on Wednesday, March 22, and will be played at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, TX, for the eighth consecutive year.

The national tournaments will consist of twenty-four teams competing for a national title. The single-elimination seeded bracket is comprised of 16 district champions and eight at-large selections. The top-eight seeds receive first-round byes in the tournament. &nbsp;

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jaren Holmes matched his season high with 23 points as No. 12 Iowa State held on to beat No. 5 Kansas State 80-76. The Cyclones moved into a three-way tie atop the Big 12 standings with the Wildcats and Texas. Gabe Kalscheur added 19 points for Iowa State. Osun Osunniyi finished with 16. Markquis Nowell led Kansas State with 23 points. Free throws by Osunniyi, Caleb Grill and Holmes sealed the victory in the final 24 seconds.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Mike Miles Jr. scored 23 points and 11th-ranked TCU led throughout in a 79-52 win over Oklahoma. The Horned Frogs followed up their 23-point win at then-No. 2 Kansas by scoring the game’s first 11 points back at home. Damion Baugh and Micah Peavy added 13 points for 16-4 TCU. Emanuel Miller 10 rebounds. C.J. Noland had 11 points for the 11-9 Sooners, who lost their third game in a row. TCU also scored the first 11 points after halftime to extend their lead to 55-27.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Marcus Carr scored 21 points and No. 10 Texas earned a regular-season sweep of Oklahoma State with an 89-75 win Tuesday night. Timmy Allen scored 17 points and Brock Cunningham scored 15 for Texas which improved to 17-3 overall and 10-2 under interim head coach Rodney Terry who took over the team in mid-December. That surge has the Longhorns in the thick of the Big 12 title chase. Kalib Boone and John-Michael Wright each scored 18 points to lead Oklahoma State. Cunningham is typically the Longhorns’ defensive disrupter. He was 5-of-6 shooting with three 3-pointers.

UNDATED (AP) — Conference races across the country are getting tight as the regular season winds toward the finish. The Big 12 and Southeastern conferences will take a break from league games on Saturday to play each other, gifting college basketball fans with some marquee midseason nonconference games. The 10th SEC/Big 12 Challenge will feature 10 games between the two conferences, including eight involving ranked teams. Topping the marquee will be No. 10 Texas at No. 4 Tennessee.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could have paid Tyreek Hill handsomely and gone all-in on another championship run. Instead, they dealt him to the Dolphins for a package of draft picks and some financial flexibility. In doing so, they took a championship window that might have lasted a few years and extended it by several more. It was a difficult choice, though, and one their opponent in Sunday's AFC title game will soon face. The Bengals intend to pay quarterback Joe Burrow handsomely as soon as this offseason, and that will mean tough decisions on free agents such as Vonn Bell and Jessie Bates III.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State has hired Bryan Nardo as defensive coordinator. He was defensive coordinator at Division II Gannon this past season. Gannon’s total defense improved from 393.3 yards allowed per game in 2021 to 287.4. It was the school’s lowest total surrendered in 20 seasons. Nardo previously was linebackers coach at Youngstown State for two years. That was after he spent eight years as defensive coordinator at Emporia State. He was named the Great Lakes Football Conference Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011 after his lone season at Missouri S&amp;T.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have acquired left-hander Josh Taylor from the Boston Red Sox for injury prone shortstop Adalberto Mondesi and an additional player. Tuesday marked the second straight day that Kansas City dealt one of its surplus position players in a bid to upgraded its lackluster bullpen. On Monday night, the Royals sent starting centerfielder Michael A. Taylor to the AL Central-rival Minnesota Twins for a pair of pitching prospects, Steven Cruz and Evan Sisk, that could help the big league bullpen as soon as this season.

NEW YORK (AP) — Slick-fielding third baseman Scott Rolen has been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame with five votes to spare above the 75% needed. The seven-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove winner appeared on 297 of 389 ballots cast by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for 76.3%. He becomes the 18th third baseman elected to the Hall, the fewest of any position. First baseman Todd Helton was second with 281 votes for 72.2%, falling 11 votes short, and reliever Billy Wagner third with 265 for 68.1%. Rolen had a .281 batting average with 316 homers and 1,287 RBIs with the Phillies, Cardinals, Blue Jays and Reds from 1996-2012.

SAN VIGILIO DI MAREBBE, Italy (AP) — American skier Mikaela Shiffrin has won a record 83rd World Cup race. Shiffrin’s giant slalom victory broke a tie on the all-time women’s list with former American teammate Lindsey Vonn. Vonn retired four years ago when injuries cut her career short. Shiffrin now needs only three more wins to match Ingemar Stenmark’s overall mark between men and women of 86 victories. Stenmark competed in the 1970s and 80s. Shiffrin says “I don’t think there are words to explain all the feelings.” Shiffrin can quickly add to her record total in another giant slalom at Kronplatz on Wednesday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jaren Holmes matched his season high with 23 points as No. 12 Iowa State held on to beat No. 5 Kansas State 80-76. The Cyclones moved into a three-way tie atop the Big 12 standings with the Wildcats and Texas. Gabe Kalscheur added 19 points for Iowa State. Osun Osunniyi finished with 16. Markquis Nowell led Kansas State with 23 points. Sports Headlines for Wednesday

DERBY, Kan.—The #2 ranked Hutchinson Salthawk Boys' basketball found themselves in a hole at the start of the fourth quarter of play in Derby on Tuesday night, trailing the Panthers by four points 38-34, but found a way to win their twelvth straight victory with a 55-50 win over the scrappy Derby Panthers.

The game was back and forth through out the whole game with Derby leading after the end of the first quarter 16 to 13.&nbsp; Hutch cut the gap, but the Panthers still held a 1 point lead of 25-24 at the break. Derby again extended their lead to 38-34 going into the final quarter. Every possession was challenged with the Salthawks finally getting the lead midway through the fourth quarter by outscoring the Panthers 21 to 12 in the final stanza.

Seniors Dauntay King, Wade Meyer and Garrett Robertson all hit big 3 point baskets in the forth quarter. Wade Meyer gave hutch the lead 48-47 with 2:18 to go.&nbsp; It was his only basket of the night. 

Nic Lange snagged a huge defensive rebound, with 4.0 secound remaining and hits 1 for 2 free throws gave Hutchinson the lead 53-50. The Panthers then tuned the ball over on an in-bounds play with 1.3 seconds to go. Hutch was fouled on the throw in, and Terrell King completed 2 of 2 shots to make the final score 55-50.

Hutch was lead in scoring by Dauntay King with 24 points, Terrell King 11, Nic Lange 10, Garrett Robertson chipped in with 7 points and Wade Meyer&nbsp; had 3.

Derby was led by junior Dallas Metzger with 20 points including 5, 3 point baskets. Kaeson Fisher-Brown had 8 points, Cooper Chadwick added 7, while Jack Ulwelling came off the bench to score 3. Mason Anderson and Kaden Franklin each finished the game with 6 points each.

#2 ranked Hutchinson remains undefeated at 12-0, while Derby falls to 8-4.

The Salthawks continue to play on the road with games in Newton (1-11) on Tuesday, and Salina South (1-11) next Friday.

Derby travels cross town to Maize (5-4) on Tuesday and then to Salina Central (4-8) on Friday.

🏀 Salthawk Boys' sputter but rally to win at Derby

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jaren Holmes matched his season high with 23 points as No. 12 Iowa State held on to beat No. 5 Kansas State 80-76 on Tuesday night.

The Cyclones (15-4, 6-2 Big 12) moved into a three-way tie atop the conference standings with the Wildcats and Texas.

Gabe Kalscheur added 19 points for Iowa State. Osun Osunniyi finished with 16.

Markquis Nowell led Kansas State (17-3, 6-2) with 23 points.

A 3-pointer from Holmes gave Iowa State a 59-49 advantage with 8:12 remaining. Kansas State responded with a 10-1 run to trim the margin to 60-59.

Caleb Grill's 3-pointer steadied the Cyclones and pushed the lead back to 63-59 with five minutes left.

Free throws by Osunniyi, Grill and Holmes sealed the victory in the final 24 seconds.

The first half featured eight lead changes and ended with Kansas State up 33-31.

A 3-pointer by Kalscheur ignited an early 9-0 run for the Cyclones and helped them build a 19-14 lead. Iowa State made just one of nine 3-point tries in the first 20 minutes.

Kansas State was trying to extend its best start to a season since 1961-62.

Iowa State improved to 11-0 at home. The Cyclones have not lost back-to-back games this season.

Kansas State hosts Florida on Saturday as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

Iowa State travels to Missouri on Saturday.

Hutchinson Community College sophomore guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/garrison_jayden_ffgr">Jayden Garrison</a>&nbsp;was a true team leader down the stretch in a pair of Blue Dragon victories over Independence and Cloud County.

Garrison was named the Jayhawk Conference Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday for those performances.

The sophomore from Little River scored 15 points, making some big shots down the stretch of Hutchinson's 115-94 win at Independence last Wednesday. He then hit a go-ahead baseline 15-footer with 39 seconds left to cap an 18-point outing in an 88-82 win over Cloud County.

For the week, Garrison averaged 16.5 points while shooting 48.0 percent from the floor. Garrison was 7 of 17 from the 3-point line. Garrison had a career single-game high six assists in a key road win at Independence.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals&nbsp;announced Tuesday that they have acquired left-handed pitcher&nbsp;Josh Taylor&nbsp;from the Boston Red Sox for infielder&nbsp;Adalberto Mondesi&nbsp;and a Player to be Named Later.

Taylor, who will be 30 years old on March 2, missed the 2022 season with a back injury. In three seasons at the Major League level with the Red Sox from 2019-21, he pitched to a 3.69 ERA (42 ER in 102.1 IP) in 121 appearances (1 start) with 129 strikeouts (11.3 K/9). Taylor had a streak of 26 consecutive scoreless appearances (21.2 IP) for Boston from April 30-July 5, 2021, the longest such streak for a left-handed pitcher in franchise history. He pitched in 6 of Boston’s 11 postseason games in 2021, recording 3 holds and a 2.25 ERA (1 ER in 4.0 IP).

Taylor has held left-handed batters to a .174 average (28-for-161) and .478 OPS in his career. He was originally signed by Philadelphia as a non-drafted free agent in 2014, then traded to Arizona in 2015. Boston acquired Taylor in 2018 to complete the trade that sent infielder&nbsp;Deven Marrero&nbsp;to the Diamondbacks.

Mondesi, 27, is due to become a free agent after the 2023 season. He was signed by Kansas City as an international free agent in 2011 and has played his entire career in the Royals organization, making his Major League debut in the 2015 World Series. In 2018, Mondesi recorded 14 home runs and 32 stolen bases in just 75 games, while batting .276 with an .804 OPS. The following season, in 2019, he tied for the Major League lead with 10 triples in a career-high 102 games but has played in only 109 games over the last three seasons due to injuries.

WICHITA, Kan. —&nbsp;Wichita State will embark on a $7.3 million Phase 1 renovation of Wilkins Stadium, home of Shocker softball, that will be made possible in part through a substantial $1.1 million estate gift from long-time Shocker athletic supporter and fan Linda Parke&nbsp;<a>and a generous $100,000 gift from Jeanie and Ricky Brotherto</a>n.

Of Parke's estate, a total of&nbsp;<a>$500,000&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;will be evenly allocated between endowed scholarships supporting&nbsp;students majoring in math and men's basketball athletes.&nbsp;<a>Parke designated the remaining portion to support Wichita State's area of greatest capital need. A focus on softball made the renovation of Wilkins Stadium an easy choice.</a>

"It's incredible how much of an impact an individual gift can have, and Linda's generosity will truly make a difference for our student-athletes and these programs at Wichita State," said Elizabeth King, president and CEO of WSU Foundation and Alumni Engagement. "Her trust in the university to use her gift well is so meaningful, and we are excited to be able to use it for these improvements to Wilkins Stadium."

"Over the last 18 months, Wichita State University has strategically invested significant resources in our softball program, intending to maximize immediate support and compliment the competitive growth our coaches and student-athletes have worked so hard to achieve," said Wichita State Director of Athletics Kevin Saal.&nbsp;"From renewed commitments to Coach Bredbenner and her staff, to new batting cages, lights, future home dugout and synthetic grass surface (to be installed upon conclusion of the 2023 season), we have invested over two-million dollars in our softball program."

<a>The Wilkins Stadium masterplan project will bring state of the art training and playing facilities to Wichita State softball student-athletes and coaches. The renovations include a 12,471 square-foot team complex which includes a locker room, coaches locker room, classroom, team room, athletic training room, staff offices, break room, work room, umpire locker rooms and laundry area. It will also include a 14,400 square-foot indoor practice facility that will feature a full indoor infield and batting cages along with storage areas and viewing areas for coaches. Turf will also be installed in the outfield and on the warning track, foul territory and apron areas at Wilkins Stadium in June of 2023.</a> <a>Fan amenities include an enclosed concourse with a grand front entrance, berm outfield seating, a new scoreboard with videoboard, expanded seating areas, suites and press box, ticket office, concession stands, additional restrooms, merchandise store, fan netting and outfield suites. There will be a variety of seating options for 1,500 fans including chairback seating, bleacher seating and berm outfield seating as well as a new entryway into the parking lot connected to Wilkins Stadium.</a>

The stadium renovation will also include a field technology area, spaces for the media, radio and TV booths, control room for the videoboard and a multi-use suite that can be used for multiple types of groups including recruiting events, team events, private companies, community members and other large groups.

The single-story team complex will be constructed on the southwest corner of Wilkins Stadium with the indoor practice facility built just north of the team complex.

Bredbenner has been Wichita State's softball coach for the last 11 seasons and transformed the program into one of the top programs in the Midwest, consistently vying for NCAA Regional bids. Her record during that time is 320-252-1, including a 75-31-1 mark over the last two seasons, which could be considered the best two seasons in program history. She became Wichita State's all-time winningest coach in 2022 when she recorded her 314th career victory. Since joining the American Athletic Conference, Bredbenner's teams are 56-27-1 in league play.

Under her guidance, Wichita State has won three regular season championships, two conference tournament titles and appeared in four of the six NCAA Regionals in school history. The first two All-Americans in program history have also come under the leadership of Bredbenner. Wichita State also entered the Top 25 for the first time ever in 2021 and finished the season in the final NFCA poll.

GLMV Architecture and facility planners are completing design concepts and planning to build in phases.</a>Phase 1 of the project would include the softball team facility and the indoor practice facility at $7.3 million, Phase 2 would include the entrance/press box/ticket office and seating areas at $1.9 million, Phase 3 would include the remodeling of existing facilities/seating/fan experience elements at $3.5 million and Phase 4 would include the outfield area/event pavilions and paving at $700,000.Construction estimates place the total at $13.4 million, with an additional $3.4 million for project soft costs, and $750,000 for the videoboard to put the total project at $17.5 million.
