NASSAU Bahamas (AP)—College football bowl games are upon us as the 2022 postseason begins with a flurry of matchups that will mark a celebration of a compelling year in the sport. The action kicked off on Friday, Dec. 16 and will run all the way through the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, Jan. 9 as we crown a national title winner for the 2022 season.

The Bowl Season action got started early on Friday with a Bahamas Bowl that came down to the wire as UAB topped Miami (OH) 24-20 when the Redhawks came up just two yards shy of a potential game-winning touchdown on the game's final play. The win capped a 7-6 season for UAB under interim coach Bryan Vincent before former NFL star quarterback Trent Dilfer takes over as the program's next coach.

Second on the Friday slate was a showdown between conference champions as No. 24 Troy of the Sun Belt edged No. 25 UTSA of Conference USA 18-12 in the Cure Bowl. The win capped a 12-2 season for the Trojans under first-year coach Jon Sumrall. It's the first time that Troy has won 12 games as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Kansas State (9-1) renews its rivalry with former conference foe Nebraska (6-5), as the Wildcats play host to the Cornhuskers in the Wildcat Classic at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.

It will be the second in a 3-game series between the schools after K-State earned a 67-58 win over Nebraska at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln on Dec. 19, 2021. The schools were to open the series at the T-Mobile Center in 2020, but it was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.. GODDARD, Kan.—Salthawk girl's coach Conor Riely first words on his post game radio show on Friday night was "I'm not going to give anymore pregame pep talks, I'm just going to send them out there." Of course he was referencing the slow start his Salthawk girls had again against Goddard.&nbsp; The game was tied 14-14 after the first quarter and Hutchinson only had a 23-21 lead at half time.

The third quarter was different however as Hutch went on a big run to start the quarter for a 37-21.&nbsp; The Salthawks (4-0) cruised to a 51-36 win over Goddard (1-3).

Hutchinson was let by Aliyah Green's 14 points with 11 coming in the first half when the Salthawk offense was sputtering.&nbsp; Hannah Ames owned the low block area with 13 points. Libby Jackson and Grace Posch chipped in 6 points apiece in the win.

Marayah Coleman and Lauryn Gordon paced Goddard with 11 points each.

The the Boy' game, Hutchinson jumped out to a huge 17-2 lead before Goddard roared back like Lions do to to pull within 10 at the half with Hutch on top 33-23 at intermission.

Goddard pulled within 1 point and a chance to tie on an "and 1" free throw by junior Jake Jasnoski but the free throw spun out and Hutchinson had a 42-42 lead.&nbsp; The Salthawks extended that lead and hit free throws down the stretch to win 59-50.

Goddard's Jasnoski and Nick Rogers combined for 30 of the 50 Goddard points with 15 points each to keep the Lions in the hunt.

Hutchisnon was led in scoring by Senior Wade Meyer's 14 points including 9 points in the 2nd half.&nbsp; Meyer hit a kep 3-point shot late in the 4th quarter to help propel Hutchinson to the win. WICHITA, Kan.—Dominant defenses go head-to-head Saturday when the Wichita State Shockers taken on the Oklahoma State Cowboys downtown at INTRUST Bank Arena.

ON THIS DATE: DEC. 17: 1932 –&nbsp;The Shockers faced Kansas State for the first time ever on the hardwood and came away with a 29-27 victory. According to the 1933 Parnassus "the Wildcat cagers, who had the week before beaten Kansas University, were at a loss to find an effective defense against the swift rushing attack of the Wheatshockers." They went on to finish 14-2 and won the Central Intercollegiate Conference title. Two members of that team – Francis Johnson and Jack Ragland – as well as head coach Gene Johnson were part of the 1936 U.S. team that won the first-ever Olympic basketball gold medal. 1951 –&nbsp;Hall of Fame coach Ralph Miller notched his first career road win at New Mexico by a score of 84-58. 2016 –&nbsp;Oklahoma State handed the Shockers their first loss in seven tries at downtown INTRUST Bank Arena. The 42 points and 26 percent shooting were both season lows for an opponent. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jane-asinde/7152">Jane Asinde</a>&nbsp;led four Shockers in double figures with a game-high 15 points and 12 rebounds. LAWRENCE, Kan. —&nbsp;Zakiyah Franklin matched her career high of 26 points and the Jayhawks received double-doubles from Ioanna Chatzileonti and Taiyanna Jackson to earn an 81-62 victory and a perfect 10-0 record to begin the season. The 10-0 mark to start the season matches the third-best start to a season and the fourth time ever to begin 10-0 in school history.

Chatzileonti recorded her first double-double of the season and the fifth of her career with season highs of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, Jackson notched her sixth double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

After an 11-11 start to the game, Kansas went on a 9-0 run over the next 1:51 of the contest. The run included a jumper by Franklin with 3:00 remaining in the period to give her 1,100 career points. Franklin finished the quarter with 11 points, including three three-pointers.

The Jayhawks held a 25-17 lead at the end of the first quarter, finishing the period on a 15-6 run over the final 4:14 seconds.

Tulsa would answer back to begin the second quarter. The Golden Hurricane went on a 15-1 run to take a 32-26 lead. The teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter and ended with a Mayberry basket at the buzzer. Tulsa led 39-34 at the break.

Kansas was held to only nine points in the second quarter, which marked a season low. The deficit at half was the first of the season for the Jayhawks.

KU flipped the script in the third quarter. A 12-0 run over a stretch of four-plus minutes gave the Jayhawks a lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Kansas outscored Tulsa by 14 points in the third quarter and held a 59-50 edge heading into the fourth.

The Jayhawks continued to extend their lead, eventually building the advantage to a game-high 19 points on a free throw by Franklin. The free throw got Franklin to 26 points to tie her career high.

That allowed Memphis to begin serving penalties even while one individual in the case contests allegations. It marks the second time the NCAA has allowed a split case. The other came in September tied to football recruiting violations at Air Force.

Sports Headlines for Thursday

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — No. 3 Iowa Western (10-2) scored touchdowns on its first two drives and never looked back Wednesday night in War Memorial Stadium.&nbsp;

No. 1 Hutchinson (11-1) just never got going.

The Dragons won the toss and deferred. On the fifth play of the game, Reiver quarterback James Graham hit L.J. Fitzpatrick on a little swing pass on the line of scrimmage.

Fitzpatrick took the ball 68 yards to the house.

On Hutchinson's first possession, an errant snap cost the Dragons 15 yards as quarterback Dylan Laible had to fall on the ball to avoid a turnover.

In a game that saw many near-turnovers, Hutchinson officially turned the ball over three times on four total fumbles.

Mr. Consistency, Dylan Kedzior, was finally held in check by a stingy Reiver defense. The KJCCC Offensive Player of the Year finished with 13 yards on 15 carries. He averaged 7.7 yards per tote coming into the championship game.

Dylan Laible, meanwhile, had trouble finding his target early. A throw to Malik Benson ended up on the back-shoulder. Benson, whose momentum was headed the other way, could not stop in time to reel in the catch.

When Laible started putting the ball on the money, Dragon receivers started dropping the ball.

Iowa Western scored again on a Jaden Koger 4-yard rush. The run capped a nine-play, 69-yard drive.

Kicker Sam Wilber tacked on a 31-yard field goal with 2:30 left in the first quarter to put Iowa Western up 17-0.

That would be the score headed into halftime, despite another called Reiver touchdown on a Graham 62-yard run up the gut.

Graham sprinted right through the Dragon defense and raced to the goal line. Just as he reached for pay dirt, Ja'Maric Morris swiped with his right hand and jarred the ball loose. It was recovered in the end zone by Javar Strong.

Officials called a touchdown on the play, which — pending the extra point — meant a 24-0 advantage for the Reivers.

The play was reviewed and overturned. Replay officials determined Graham lost the ball before his knee touched the turf and before the ball crossed the goal line.

Since Strong had the clear recovery, Hutchinson was awarded the ball on its own 20 after the touchback.

Still down 17, the Dragons looked poised to gain momentum.

Just four plays later, Jackson Filer stripped Tim Byrd Jr. of the football and the Reivers regained possession.

Wilber had a chance to add three points just before the half, but could not connect on a 33-yard field goal as the first half game clock expired.

Running back Bryant Williams scored once in the third and again in the fourth to close out scoring.

This is the first shutout in the NJCAA Championship Game since 1992.

Iowa Western is now 5-3 all time against Hutchinson.

The Reivers are 2-2 in the title game while the Dragons fall to 1-1.

Both teams played in the championship in 2021. The Dragons defeated Snow in the spring and the Reivers lost to New Mexico Military in the fall.

Graham threw 4 of 10 for 116 yards (68 on one bubble screen) and ran for another 102 (62 on one play).

Iowa Western averaged 6.6 yards per play to Hutchinson's 2.3.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Kevin Obanor scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, De’Vion Harmon had 19 points and six steals and Texas Tech held off Eastern Washington 77-70. Texas Tech (7-2) extended its home winning streak to 27 games — with its last loss coming on Feb. 9, 2021. Steele Venters banked in a 3-pointer to pull EWU within 61-59 left but Texas Tech freshman Pop Isaacs answered with a 3-pointer and Harmon dunked it to rebuild a seven-point lead. Harmon made a layup while being fouled and missed the free throw with two minutes left, but Texas Tech secured the rebound and Obanor made two free throws for a 72-65 lead. Isaacs finished with 15 points for Texas Tech.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Free agent left-hander Ryan Yarbrough has signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals after spending the past five seasons with Tampa Bay. The 30-year-old Yarbrough was 3-8 with a 4.50 ERA in 20 games last season, making nine starts. He twice was on the injured list with groin tightness and a strained oblique. Yarbrough was 40-31 with a 4.33 ERA in 127 games, including 59 starts, for the Rays. He was 16-6 as a rookie in 2018. He was 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA in eight postseason games. Yarbrough played college ball at Old Dominion, where new Royals manager Matt Quatraro and Kansas City infielder Vinnie Pasquantino also went to school.

UNDATED (AP) — Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach has died following complications from a heart condition. The pioneering coach helped revolutionize the college football passing game with the Air Raid offense. Leach had been hospitalized over the weekend and had a bout of pneumonia late this season. He died Monday night. In 21 seasons as a head coach at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State, Leach went 158-107. Six of the 20 best passing seasons in major college football history were by quarterbacks who played for Leach, including four of the top six. Mike Leach was 61.

This is Hutchinson's second trip to the national championship game in three seasons. The Dragons won a program-first title in the spring-shortened season of 2021.

Pollsters left Hutchinson out of the top four playoff one season ago as the Dragons were slapped in the face with a No. 5 final-season ranking one year ago (fall of 2021).
