HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the first time this season, the Blue Dragons (18-6, 12-7) lost at home.

Before Saturday night's 11th Annual Pink Out to benefit the Cancer Council of Reno County, Hutchinson was a perfect 12-0 at home.

The No. 21 Grizzlies (20-3, 15-3) put the only blemish on Hutchinson's home record this season thanks to Freddie Wallace's 24 points (on 8 of 12 shooting) and seven rebounds.

Mya Williams scored 22 to lead three Dragons in double-digit scoring (Monae Duffy 15 and Journey Armstead 12).

The Dragons shot just 28.6% (6-21) from distance.

The Grizzlies shot the exact same percentage from deep, but attempted only seven treys.

Butler shot 56.8% overall from the field, compared to Hutchinson's 38.6%.

The Dragons went 17 of 29 from the charity stripe. The Grizzlies hit 21 of 30 attempts.

Butler got 16 points from Maycee James and another 11 from Sincere Harrod.

Hutchinson opened the game with a quick basket and led for 48 seconds before Butler took over and never looked back. The Grizzlies led for 38:01. The game was tied for 71 seconds.

Hutchinson pulled within 54-53 with eight seconds left in the third quarter before a Kali Howard foul put Harrod on the line. Harrod hit both free throws to put Butler up three headed into the final frame.

That lead ballooned to 11 with 5:37 to play.

Hutchinson got back within four on a Morgan Browning three, but Butler hit enough free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

The athletic department presented a check to the Cancer Council of Reno County for $6,750 at halftime of the men's game. Fans also had the opportunity to pledge money for each made three by both Dragon teams Saturday night (13 total). That donation money will be calculated next week.

🏀 WBB: Dragons fall short of No. 21 Grizzlies

AMES, Iowa (AP) —&nbsp;Jaren Holmes led No. 13 Iowa State with 15 points to lift the Cyclones to a 68-53 win over No. 8 Kansas on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.

Osun Osunniyi added 13 for the Cyclones (16-6, 7-3 Big 12), who stayed within at least a game of front-running Texas in the Big 12 Conference standings.

“Today, we came out and played desperate,” Holmes said.

Jalen Wilson led the Jayhawks (18-5, 6-4) with 26 points for his sixth straight game with at least 20 points, which is the longest stretch by a Jayhawk since Dedric Lawson also scored 20-plus in six straight in 2018. Wilson has also scored 159 points over his last six games, which is the most by a Jayhawk since at least 1996-97. Wayne Simien had the previous high with 156 points.

“It’s not a formula for success for us,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “We need balance from our starting five. If one guy feels like he’s got to go do it all on his own, it crashes the offense.”

The Cyclones led for all but 1:14 of the game, building a 34-16 scoring edge in the paint. Kansas struggled early, making just two of their first 10 shots and committing 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

Iowa State was up 33-21 at the break. Trailing 36-23 at the 18:34 mark of the second half, the Jayhawks went on a run to cut the Cyclones lead to five. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on Big 12 NOW, with Brenda VanLengen and Niccolly Wuellner on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the Jayhawk Radio Network from Learfield, with Steven Davis and David Lawrence calling the action.

The Jayhawks are 14-6 on the year and 4-5 in Big 12 play following a 77-73 setback at Baylor on Wednesday. Texas is 17-6 on the year and leads the conference at 8-2 during league play.

Against Baylor, Kansas was led by Holly Kersgieter, who had 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals for her fourth game of 20+ points during Big 12 play. Kersgieter is KU’s second-leading scorer for the season, averaging 14.8 points per game. Three other Jayhawks scored in double figures at Baylor as Wyvette Mayberry and Zakiyah Franklin had 13 points apiece, while Taiyanna Jackson added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Jackson added to her list of accolades on Friday as she was named one of the Top 10 candidates for the 2023 Lisa Leslie Award, which is presented to the top center in NCAA Division I women’s basketball. On Jan. 24 she was one of 15 players named to the 2023 Naismith Women’s Defensive Player of the Year Watch List. Jackson had three blocks at Baylor, moving into sole possession of third place on KU’s career list with 152.

Kersgieter moved into 15th place on KU’s career scoring list after scoring 20 points at Baylor. She surpassed Jaclyn Johnson (1997-2001) for 15th, and she currently has 1,384 career points. Kersgieter leads the Jayhawks with 16.1 points per game during conference games.

Franklin also climbed a spot on the all-time scoring list against Baylor, scoring 13 points in the game to give her 1,257 career points. Franklin is now 20th on the all-time list after surpassing Monica Engelman (2009-13). She’s third on the team with 14.3 points per game for the year.

Texas comes to Lawrence ranked No. 24 in the AP Poll and winners of four straight games to improve to 8-2 in league play. Six different players are scoring 10 or more points per game for the Longhorns, who feature the No. 3 scoring offense in the Big 12 at 76.7 points per game. 🏀 MBB: Kansas plays at Iowa State Saturday

SALINA, Kan.—Both Hutchinson Salthawk basketball teams traveled to Salina and came away with wins on Friday night with the Salthawk girls sliding past the Salina South Cougars 33 to 20 and the boys taking the nightcap game 66 to 40.

While it wasn't pretty, the Salthawk girls did get the "W", primarily because of playing suffocating defense throughout the whole night.&nbsp; 

Hutch led by 10 points at the half 15-5 due in part to Libby Jackson's 6 point effort including going 4 of 6 at the line. The Salthawk defense was superb, holding South to only one field goal and three free throws in the first half. The Salthawk girls pulled away in the fourth quarter hitting 9 of 12 free throws with Grace Posch going 4 for 4 and Aliyah Green hitting 4 for 6 from the line.

Hutchinson was led in scoring with Posch scoring 9, followed by 8 apiece from Aliyah Green and Josie McLean. Libby Jackson added 6 and Kaia Smith came off the bench to score 2.

Hutchinson girls go to 11-3 and host Goddard-Eisenhower (9-4) in a non-conference game at the Salthawk Activity Center on Tuesday.

The Salthawk boys got a huge game from Garrett Robertson on Friday, as he hit 8 treys and scored a game high 24 points on the night. Hutch led at the half 31 to 23 before Salina South's Jake Humphrey scored nine of his 16 points in the third. Hutch answered right back with 21 third quarter points including a Jay Lewis 3 pointer after replacing Terrell King who was sent to the bench in foul trouble.&nbsp; In the fourth quarter, the Salthawk defense took over as Hutch held the Cougars to only 1 free throw to go on a 14-1 run to close out the game.

SALINA, Kan.—Both Hutchinson Salthawk basketball teams traveled to Salina and came away with wins on Friday night with the Salthawk girls sliding past the Salina South Cougars 33 to 20 and the boys taking the nightcap game 66 to 40.GIRLS RECAPWhile it wasn't pretty, the Salthawk girls did get the "W", primarily because of playing suffocating defense throughout the whole night.&nbsp; Hutch led by 10 points at the half 15-5 due in part to Libby Jackson's 6 point effort including going 4 of 6 at the line. TOPEKA - Hutchinson Community College freshman distance runner Serenity Larson earned her first career national qualification on Friday on Day 1 of the Washburn Open at the Washburn University Indoor Athletic Facility.

The freshman from Dodge City finished sixth in the 5,000 meters with a national-qualifying time of 18 minutes, 53.82 seconds. That time is the second-fastest time in Blue Dragon indoor history.

The Blue Dragons had two national qualifiers on Friday to bring their season total up to six.

Hutchinson’s Distance Medley Relay team placed seventh on Friday with a time of 13:05.36. The relay team of Ellie Van Zelfden, Kaylee James, Gracie Lambert and Taylor Hoskinson posted the fourth-best time in Blue Dragon indoor history. TOPEKA – Sophomore Caleb Manning was the top finisher on Friday for the Hutchinson Community College men’s track team at the Washburn Open.

Manning finished second in the triple jump with a top attempt of 48 feet, 2 inches (14.68m). That mark was a personal record for Manning, who qualified for the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Championships two weeks ago at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility at the Rust Buster Classic.

Manning’s mark on Friday improved that mark and was the fourth-best triple jump in the nation this season.

The Blue Dragon men had four other Top 10 performances on Day 1 of the two-day meet at the site of the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Championships.

High jumpers Donovan Bryant and Alex Holt tied for seventh after both Blue Dragons cleared 6 feet, 0.75 inch (1.85m).

Every conference, regardless of the level of play, has its classic rivalry matchups. The Jayhawk Conference has Hutchinson and Butler.

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team takes on the rival and 23rd-ranked Grizzlies for the 197th time at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena for the Blue Dragons’ annual Pink-Out Night game.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) with Glen Grunwald (PBP) and Dan Naccarato (analyst) calling the action. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will provide the stream for the game starting at 7:15 p.m.

The series started on January 4, 1929 in El Dorado. The Blue Dragons lead the all-time series 128-68, but along the way there have been countless matchups, including 17 Region VI Tournament meetings between Hutchinson and Butler.

The Blue Dragons enter the second meeting of the season with the Grizzlies coming off their best overall game of the season, a 91-65 victory over Cowley on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. Aaron Franklin scored 26 points and Aaron Potter had a career-high 22 points to lead the Dragons, who shot 48.5 percent with 13 3-pointers. Defensively, the Dragons held Cowley to an opponent-low 65 points - including 28 points in the first half - and 39.0 percent shooting.

The first time the Blue Dragons played the Grizzlies, a 68-63 loss on December 3 in El Dorado, the Blue Dragons trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half and brought the game back to one possession in the final two minutes. The Blue Dragons committed 28 turnovers, but forced 29 turnovers to get back into the game. Antonio Green had 14 points to lead the Blue Dragons. Treylon Payne had 18 points to lead the Grizzlies.

Since being upset by Northwest Tech on January 25, the Grizzlies have won a pair of tough games over Pratt and Coffeyville, both at home. Butler has won 8 of its last 9 games.

The Grizzlies knocked off No. 13 Coffeyville 93-75 on Wednesday in El Dorado. Butler shot 49.1 percent with five players scoring in double figures. Rob Brown and Isaiah Williams had 16 points each to lead the Grizzlies. Butler trailed Coffeyville 40-33 at halftime, but outscored the Red Ravens 50-35 in the second half.

The breakdown of levels of play of the 34 Blue Dragons players are: Power 5 schools – 13; Other FBS schools – 12; FCS schools – 4; NCAA Division II school – 5.

Through his first three seasons as the Blue Dragon head coach, Drew Dallas now has produced 104 players who have been placed at four-year programs, including 32 players to Power 5 programs.

The 2022 Blue Dragons won the Jayhawk Conference championship and an NJCAA National Playoff semifinal over Coffeyville before falling to Iowa Western in the national championship game. The Blue Dragons tied a single-season record for wins, going 11-1 this past season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Donna Kelce is going to have to pull out that now-familiar custom jersey — the one with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce's front stitched to Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce's back — one more time this season.

At least this time, she'll get to see her boys in person.

For the first time in Super Bowl history, a pair of siblings will play each other on the NFL's grandest stage. Kelce helped the Chiefs return to their third championship game in four seasons on Sunday night when they beat the Bengals for the AFC title, while Jason has the Eagles back for the second time in six years after their NFC title win over the 49ers.

“Cool scenario to be in, you know?” Travis Kelce said. “My mom can't lose.”

Indeed, there have been plenty of famous NFL siblings over the years, and many had some memorable matchups: Peyton vs. Eli Manning, Tiki vs. Ronde Barber. But they never reached the same Super Bowl, or had to put their dear old mom in such a predicament, where one will be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at the other one's expense.

“It's going to be an amazing feeling playing against him,” added Travis, whose team has gotten the better of big brother's Eagles the last three matchups. “I respect everyone over there in the Eagles organization. You won't see me talk too much trash because of how much I love my brother. But it's going to be an emotional game, for sure.”

Jason Kelce was even ever-so-briefly a Chiefs fan Sunday night, pulling on a Kansas City sweatshirt for about the three hours between the end of the Eagles' 31-7 rout of San Francisco and the finish of his little brother's 23-20 win over Cincinnati.

“That's it for the rest of the year,” Jason said with a smile. “I am done being a Chiefs fan.”

While her husband, Ed, has mostly kept private over the years, Donna has been a fixture as she crisscrosses the country to watch her boys. During wild-card weekend last year, she started in Tampa Bay watching the Eagles against the Buccaneers, then hopped a plane to Kansas City in time to watch the Chiefs play the Steelers at night.

She already has seen both of her sons win Super Bowls, too: The Eagles beat the Patriots in 2018 in Minneapolis, and the Chiefs rallied to beat the 49ers in Miami two years later.

She hasn't seen much of them lately, though. The way the playoff schedule worked out for the divisional round and the conference championship games, it was impossible for Donna to make it to see both of her boys in person.

In any case, they've come a long way from their solidly middle-class upbringing in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Jason blazed the trail as the star offensive lineman who earned a scholarship to Cincinnati, and Travis soon followed suit. Both caught the eyes of NFL scout during their college careers, and of one coach in particular: Andy Reid.

It was Big Red who, while coaching the Eagles, used a sixth-round pick on Jason during the 2011 draft. And two years later, after Reid had gotten a fresh start in Kansas City, the Chiefs used a third-rounder to bring Travis into the fold.

“Big brother probably protected Travis from doing some crazy things. He probably talked him from dropping off a ladder into raked-up leaves once or twice,” Reid said Monday. “Listen, they're both at heart very competitive and compassionate, is the biggest thing. They care and they care about people and they care about they're game.”

Jason has been to six Pro Bowls and was just voted an All-Pro for the fifth time, and he's emerged as one of the best offensive linemen in Eagles history. Travis has been to eight Pro Bowls, just made a fourth All-Pro team and is second in NFL history to Jerry Rice in playoff catches, yards and touchdowns.

Football's not the only thing they're good at, either.

The brothers have new a podcast called “New Heights with Jason &amp; Travis Kelce," which takes listeners on a riotous, real-time ride through the NFL season. The weekly shows are recorded on Tuesdays and last between 60 and 90 minutes, the two NFL stars playing off each other as if they were hanging out in mom's basement.

Special guests have included Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Chiefs counterpart Patrick Mahomes.

“They have a good mesh there, and a good relationship,” Reid said. “I think Travis has grown up a lot. Jason probably came in a bit more mature — Travis was a little immature. But he's really grown into a good person.

“I have invested time in both of those two,” Reid added, “so I feel like a part of the family.”

The NFL on Wednesday put the rookie who has played just four snaps this season on the commissioner’s exempt list. That means he can’t practice, play or travel with the Eagles as they prepares for the Super Bowl. A grand jury indicted Sills earlier this week. His attorney said Wednesday that the allegations are false. Sills is due in court on Feb. 16, four days after the Eagles are to play Kansas City in the Super Bowl.

Players like Florida offensive tackle O'Cyrus Torrence are hoping their moves pay off in the draft. Torrence and dozens of others who played for multiple schools are trying to improve their draft stock at the East-West Shrine Game and Senior Bowl this week. They have to answer questions about why they transferred. Some, like Torrence, Washington State linebacker Daiyan Henley and Cincinnati linebacker Ivan Pace Jr., had big seasons.

Blue-chip quarterback Jaden Rashada, who signed with Florida in December and then asked to be released from the commitment when a name, imagine and likeness deal fell through, announced he is going to Arizona State. Also in the Pac-12, Cormani McClain signed with Colorado to make it two straight years that coach Deion Sanders has landed a five-star cornerback. McClain had previously committed to Miami.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak by the Wildcats against the Cyclones and was K-State's second Associated Press top-15 win of the season, also downing fourth-ranked Iowa in November. K-State (14-9, 3-7 Big 12) put three in double figures for the 19th time this season and were led by senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/gabby-gregory/8613">Gabby Gregory</a>&nbsp;with a game-high 27 points while playing all 40 minutes for the second straight game. Gregory, who entered the contest as the number-two scorer in the Big 12, carded her 14th game this season with 20 or more points and did so on 9-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and a 6-of-7 effort from the foul line. Obviously, we're not a very deep team and when Ash (Ashley Joens) and Lex (Lexi Donarski) got in foul trouble in the second quarter, we didn't finish the half the way we needed to. But you know, I think for us, we have a lot of people that have the ability to score, but the turnovers and points off turnovers hurt us. But other than that, I think really defensively you just have to be much better on the road in this league than we were tonight. And that's a credit to them." We've been through a really tough stretch where we didn't play as well as we were capable of but we have started to play better but we haven't tasted victory. And you know, you want that work in practice to carry over to game night and you've got to trust that it will. And I'm really proud of the team for trusting it. Even when they strayed away from the game plan, they got back to it. And there were a couple of times we strayed a little bit away from it down the stretch, but we got back to it and players made plays and you've got to make plays in a game like this." On if there was an emphasis to get off to a hot start… "It's been a point of emphasis for a while, both halves, it's been a point of emphasis that we do things better. It's important because we've played pretty well but boy when you just dig yourself a hole and then it changes your substitution patterns, it can change some things. And it certainly changes some things for the other team. They're playing now with a lot of confidence. The thing I thought we did tonight, we got (Ashely) Jones off to a rough start. She's such a veteran that she comes back and has a good second half, but yet, she doesn't have a monstrous game. And so we hold her kind of at bay. On any halftime adjustments made… "We made a few little wrinkles to a few things, but I would just say the biggest thing our players did was they stayed with the game plan of getting downhill and getting in the paint and shooting threes off of it. On carrying this momentum forward… "I think you just take it into practice. You take the one practice at a time, how do we get better? Get a little bit of rest. This was a big battle so we'll get a little bit of rest we play on Sunday. And have a good practice, you know keep that momentum going. I have felt like we have had pretty productive practices and I felt leaving practice that not only have we improved individually at where I feel like they can continue to grow, but also how we can help each other play better. So defensively tonight, that was a step forward defensively for us to do some things better. They still shoot a higher percentage than I'd like but that's a really good offensive team. So just get back into practice on Friday and get ready to hopefully you know carry this over." Iowa State Head Coach Bill Fennelly Opening Statement… "I certainly want to congratulate Kansas State. I thought they played really really hard, really well. It was a really good game. Obviously, when you go on the road, one of the things we talk about as a staff is you never know the play that is going to change the game and when you lose by one, we can sit here all night and pick out a play or two. But credit to them they played really hard and really well. And we competed but just not efficient enough in certain times." On the key to K-State pulling away… "I think the biggest thing is we really had a hard time guarding them. Recently, ever since we lost Stephanie (Soares) we've had to kind of reinvent ourselves defensively and our scouting, what we call scouting report defense has been really good. Tonight it wasn't and they exploited it in a lot of different ways, and that's a credit to them. So that was the biggest thing for me. Defensively, we just we didn't do the little things we needed to do to to beat a very skilled offensive team." On what worked well in the second quarter… "I think the biggest thing was we quit turning the ball over for about six minutes. Obviously, we're not a very deep team and when Ash (Ashley Joens) and Lex (Lexi Donarski) got in foul trouble in the second quarter, we didn't finish the half the way we needed to. But you know, I think for us, we have a lot of people that have the ability to score, but the turnovers and points off turnovers hurt us. But other than that, I think really defensively you just have to be much better on the road in this league than we were tonight. And that's a credit to them." I mean, going into the portal, I was looking for a fresh start and I knew coming to K State I could have that. And I mean my teammates have been incredible ever since I got here. I'm back to having fun playing basketball and I guess you can see it on the floor, like I'm just having a blast and my teammates are incredible and we just played together so well. Yeah, and then just staying confident in my shot and shooting it." On her stretch of a layup followed by a three-pointer… "I definitely think it was a gamble on the steal. I think I had three fouls so that really could have gone either way. But I'm glad it went my way. And then on that three it just felt really good coming off. I didn't know like how much time was on the clock or like maybe we didn't really need that three, but I'm just confident in my shot. It felt really good coming off."
