MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Senior&nbsp;Markquis Nowell&nbsp;was announced as a Top 10 candidate for the 2023 Bob Cousy Award by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Monday (February 7).

The award, which annually honors the top point guard in Division I men’s basketball, is named after former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard&nbsp;Bob Cousy, who was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1971.

Nowell joined on the list by fellow Big 12 player – TCU’s&nbsp;Mike Miles, Jr.&nbsp;– along with Detroit Mercy’s&nbsp;Antonie Davis, Marquette’s&nbsp;Tyler Kolek, Memphis&nbsp;Kendric Davis, Oral Roberts’&nbsp;Max Abmas, Penn State’s&nbsp;Jalen Pickett, UCLA’s&nbsp;Tyger Campbell&nbsp;and Xavier’s&nbsp;Souley Boum.

K-State fans can support Nowell’s candidacy for the award by participating in Fan Voting starting Friday, Feb. 10 on&nbsp;<a href="http://www.hoophallawards.com/" target="_blank">hoophallawards.com</a>. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.

Five finalists for the Cousy Award will be announced in March with the winner being announced in April.

He is one of just three active Division I players to total more than 1,500 points, 500 assists and 200 steals in a career.

Nowell ranks third nationally in assists/game (7.8 apg.) and total assists (180), while he is among the top-35 in 5 other categories, including 15th&nbsp;in free throws made (117) and steals/game (2.3 spg.), 17th&nbsp;in total steals (52), 25th&nbsp;in minutes/game (35.6) and 35th&nbsp;in free throw percentage.  🏀 MBB: K-States' Nowell Named Top 10 Candidate for Bob Cousy Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs activated running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire from injured reserve Monday and placed wide receiver Mecole Hardman on the list for the second time as they finalize their roster for the Super Bowl.

Edwards-Helaire, a 2020 first-round pick, has been out since sustaining a high ankle sprain during a win over the Chargers on Nov. 20. He was designated to return on Jan. 17, opening a three-week window in which he could be activated.

Edwards-Helaire started the first six games of the season before ceding time to seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco, who has become one of the Chiefs' breakout stars. Edwards-Helaire has run 71 times for 302 yards and three touchdowns and caught 17 passes for 151 yards and three more scores this season.

The emergence of Pacheco, along with veteran Jerick McKinnon, took pressure off the Chiefs to activate Edwards-Helaire before he was ready. Pacheco ran for 830 yards and five TDs during the regular season along with 121 combined rushing yards in playoff wins over Jacksonville and Cincinnati, while McKinnon scored 10 combined touchdowns in the regular season.

Hardman, who will be a free agent after the season, initially hurt his pelvis Nov. 6 during a game against the Titans. He was activated from IR on Jan. 4 but struggled to get healthy enough to appear in games, missing the Chiefs' regular-season finale against the Raiders and their divisional win over the Jaguars.

He finally suited up for the AFC title game against the Bengals, and he ran a couple of jet sweeps while catching two passes for 10 yards. It was while getting tackled on his second reception that Hardman reinjured the pelvis.

Hardman was among three wide receivers hurt in the game, forcing the Chiefs to use a patchwork group down the stretch.

JuJu Smith-Schuster had one catch for 7 yards before inflammation in his knee forced him to the sideline, and Kadarius Toney had one catch for 9 yards before spraining his ankle while attempting to make a cut.

Neither participated in practice last week before the team departed Sunday for Phoenix, though coach Andy Reid expressed optimism that they would be available for the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs also should get back wide receiver Justin Watson, who was inactive for the AFC title game because of an illness.

“(Smith-Schuster) is in a good place,” Reid said. “The main thing is that we let that calm down. And right now, it's doing great, so very optimistic right now. And his want-to is all in there. But we'll just see where it goes.”

Sports Headlines for Tuesday

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Dajuan Harris Jr. was willing to acknowledge that Kansas was facing something rare when fifth-ranked and Big 12-leading Texas arrived at Allen Fieldhouse on Monday night: a must-win game.

The defending national champs played like it.

Gradey Dick scored 21 points, Harris had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists, and the ninth-ranked Jayhawks held on after blowing a 14-point first-half lead to beat the Longhorns 88-80 and tighten the league race.

Kevin McCullar Jr. added 16 points, Joseph Yesufu scored 14 off the bench and KJ Adams finished with 10, helping the Jayhawks (19-5, 7-4) overcome an off night from Jalen Wilson. The league's leading scorer at 21.5 points per game battled foul trouble and was held to just two, ending his streak of 25 straight double-figure games.

“We knew we had to come in here and get a win,” said Dick, who had the Jayhawks' only two 3-pointers. “The big thing, just in preparation for the week, was coming out with energy. When we do that, we're a scary team."

The Jayhawks needed everyone's help holding off the Longhorns' Marcus Carr.

The Minnesota transfer, who had a game-high 29 points, kept answering Kansas baskets down the stretch. His 3-pointer got the Longhorns within 77-68 with 2:25 left, three free throws made it 78-71 with 1:31 to go, and his three-point play got the Longhorns (19-5, 8-3) within 86-80 with 23.5 seconds remaining.

Texas quickly fouled Dick at the other end, and his free throw with 18 seconds left helped to put the game away.

“It was as close to a must-win as you could have this early in the season to win the league,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “You go down three games with seven left, you’d have to win out and get a lot of help from others. Now, we still have as hard a schedule as everybody, but we can kind of control our own destiny where if we play well, we have a shot.”

Timmy Allen finished with 18 points for the Longhorns. Sir'Jabari Rice had 12 before fouling out.

“It was their night tonight in terms of what they got done,” Texas interim coach Rodney Terry said.

The Longhorns have made a habit of overcoming double-digit deficits: 18 down to beat TCU, 12 down to beat Texas Tech and 14 down to beat No. 12 Kansas State last Saturday in a game played just down the road.

So it wasn't that surprising when Texas dug another 14-point hole Monday night.

Just like the Longhorns did in Manhattan, though, they began to rally. Texas shook off 10 first-half turnovers to get within 42-35 by the break, then kept coming in the second half. Hunter hit a 3-pointer, Carr added a couple of buckets and it was 43-all when Self called a timeout to slow Texas' momentum.

Unlike the Horned Frogs, Red Raiders and Wildcats, the Jayhawks rose to the challenge.

McCullar's three-point play while they were clinging to a 49-48 lead gave them a boost, and Dick added a couple of free throws. But it was back-to-back buckets by Harris, who is known more as a distributor than as a scorer, that pushed the lead to 58-50 with about 12 minutes to go.

Texas closed within 66-60 but, after the Jayhawks pulled down two offensive boards, Dick hit another 3-pointer. And when Yesufu bookended a couple of free throws by Harris, the lead had stretched to 75-62 with 3 minutes to go.

The Jayhawks were able to fend off Carr and the Longhorns from there.

“Give those guys credit. They came in and played at a very high level,” Terry said, “and we knew that would be the case.”

The Jayhawks were missing several backups. Zack Clemence has a hurt knee, Bobby Pettiford Jr. is dealing with a hamstring injury and Zuby Ejiofor a foot injury. Kyle Cuffe Jr. (knee) and Cam Martin (shoulder) also were out.

“I thought the bench was great. As good as they've been all year,” Self said. “We had nine guys we could put in the game.”

Texas has struggled to get off to good starts this season, and it seemed the energy the Longhorns expended climbing back into Monday night's game was missing by the end. Carr tried to carry them but he needed more help.

Kansas got the production it needed from the bench. Yesufu provided the scoring pop but big man Ernest Udeh Jr. and guard MJ Rice, both seldom-used freshmen, also provided important minutes for the Jayhawks.

Texas heads home after its Sunflower State swing to play West Virginia on Saturday.

Kansas has a two-game trip next with Oklahoma on Saturday and Oklahoma State on Tuesday.

🏀 MBB: No. 9 Kansas blows lead, then holds off No. 5 Texas

LINDSBORG, Kan. —&nbsp;Bethany College is celebrating the completion of a $2.8 million fundraising campaign for the Coach Ted K. Kessinger Family Stadium project. &nbsp;

"I have heard countless stories of how Coach K has impacted people's lives all over the country,” Jacob Spilker, Vice President of Advancement and Alumni Engagement, said. “It is incredible that so many people have helped honor him this way." &nbsp;

Ted K. Kessinger was the head football coach of Bethany College from 1976 to 2003. He was enshrined in the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame in 2010.

During Kessinger's tenure, the team amassed a division-leading record of 219-57-1 with no losing seasons for a winning percentage of .792. &nbsp;

"It is with excitement and gratitude that Bethany College has made this commitment," Ted. K. Kessinger said. &nbsp;

The stadium will be used by the football team, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's track and field teams. 

Additionally, Smoky Valley Middle and High School will utilize these facilities for their football and track teams. &nbsp;

Bethany College said it will be a monumental tribute to Coach Kessinger's remarkable successes and devotion to his student-athletes. &nbsp;

"A heartfelt thank you to all donors who have invested in this project,” Laura Moreno, Dean of Athletics, said. “We look forward to moving forward with construction and seeing these plans come to fruition! Rockar Stockar! Go, Swedes!" &nbsp;

The Bethany College Athletics Department is grateful to all the donors who supported the cause and contributed to honoring Ted K. Kessinger's career as Head Football Coach and his remarkable impact on student-athletes.&nbsp;

PHOENIX (AP) — A few minutes after the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes landed in Phoenix, the pilot hung a “Chiefs Kingdom” flag out of the window as players, coaches and staff got off the plane and walked across the runway. About an hour later, it was the Philadelphia Eagles who arrived in Arizona, with an “It’s a Philly Thing” flag fluttering in the runway as quarterback Jalen Hurts, coach Nick Sirianni and others made their way to a fleet of buses. Super Bowl 57 is just one week away. The Chiefs will face the Eagles on Feb. 12 in Glendale, Arizona.

The Mavericks will trade Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and a package of draft picks to the Nets. The blockbuster trade ends Irving's pairing with Kevin Durant before it ever had much of a chance to click. Dallas also gets Markieff Morris in the deal.

PHOENIX (AP) — A few minutes after the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes landed in Phoenix, the pilot hung a “Chiefs Kingdom” flag out of the window as players, coaches and staff got off the plane and walked across the runway. About an hour later, it was the Philadelphia Eagles who arrived in Arizona, with an “It’s a Philly Thing” flag fluttering in the runway as quarterback Jalen Hurts, coach Nick Sirianni and others made their way to a fleet of buses.  ⚾ WSB: Stipsits leads Blue Dragons in sweep of Bulldogs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are built around their half-billion dollar All-Pro quarterback, and for the past five years, Super Bowl-bound Patrick Mahomes has made everyone else around him all the more valuable.

He's taken marginal wide receivers and turned them into stars. Mediocre offensive linemen became stalwarts.

Finishing the second year of his mammoth 10-year contract, Mahomes soaks up more than a fifth of the Kansas City salary cap, and some would argue he's still underpaid. Yet the deal nevertheless creates a challenge in filling out the roster around him, and it's one that Chiefs general manager Brett Veach confronted with savvy business and creativity.

Their prime rusher is a seventh-round pick. Their touchdowns leader is a journeyman running back making $1,272,500 this season, while none of their wide receivers is making $5 million. Their top tackler is still on his paltry rookie deal.

“I would start with Brett and the way that he and his guys have gone about putting this thing together,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, while also pointing to the latitude given to him by chairman Clark Hunt and team president Mark Donovan.

“They're all part of that, giving us the opportunity to do what Brett can do by bringing these guys in,” Reid said. “But the process he goes through, he's relentless. He's committed. He's got a great eye for talent. He's fearless when it comes to the trades and drafts and all those things. It's been fun for me to watch."

Reid used to hold both titles of coach and general manager when he was with the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City's opponent in the Super Bowl next weekend. But when he took over the Chiefs in 2013, he decided to step away from front-office work and focus solely on his first love: coaching.

The decision to draft Mahomes four years later got his blessing, of course, and it was then-GM John Dorsey who had the final say. But it was Veach, then the co-director of player personnel, who stood on the table and stumped for him.

Veach took over as general manager the following year and began putting his thumbprint on the rest of the team.

He invested heavily in defense, particularly when it comes to rushing the passer, and made sure veteran safeties could back up young cornerbacks acquired through the draft. On offense, he rebuilt the entire offensive line through free agency and the draft, then spread money around the skill positions without investing too heavily in any one player.

That led to Veach's biggest decision since drafting Mahomes: trading Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins.

Veach could have given the All-Pro wide receiver a massive contract extension last offseason, but doing so would have hamstrung the team for years to come. So, Veach sent him to the Dolphins for draft picks and financial flexibility.

He used both to build a team that is heading back to the Super Bowl.

“I think it’s a confirmation that we have confidence in our process,” Veach said. "It just goes to show that I have a really talented staff and I think the hard work pays off. We have a process and we’re always going to be motivated to continue to add talent and depth to this roster and provide Coach and Pat what they need.”

The Chiefs had to replenish at wide receiver after trading Hill and losing Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson in free agency. They signed JuJu Smith-Schuster to a one-year prove-it deal, Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a three-year contract and drafted Skyy Moore, who does many of the same jet sweeps that made Hill such a defensive terror.

Having tight end Travis Kelce, every bit as dangerous as the best wide receivers, helps the cause.

The Chiefs rebuilt their offensive line the previous year, and it returned largely intact, so the other focus was on the ground game. The Chiefs took a flier on running back Isiah Pacheco in the seventh round, and by the midpoint of the season, he had supplanted injury-prone former first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire atop the depth chart.

Besides the quarterback, the biggest contract on the books belongs to Chris Jones. And like Mahomes, there's an argument to be made that the big defensive tackle, with 15 1/2 sacks this season, has vastly outperformed it.

Veach knows the value in pressuring the quarterback, though. It's why the Chiefs traded for Frank Clark and gave him a big contract, signed veteran Carlos Dunlap this past offseason and used a first-round pick on George Karlaftis.

The Chiefs had to replace Tyrann Mathieu's leadership on the back end of the defense, so they signed safety Justin Reid in free agency. Little did Reid know that he'd spend all season tutoring a quartet of rookie defensive backs — Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Joshua Williams and Bryan Cook — who came up huge in the AFC title game against the Bengals.

Harrison Butker has been one of the league's best kickers going on six years, but an ankle injury sustained in the opener led to a shaky season. He came back to drive through the winning field goal in the final seconds against Cincinnati.

Tommy Townsend merely earned All-Pro honors while setting several franchise milestones for punting this season.

The Nets said Irving's absence was due to right calf soreness, adding him to the injury report for their game against Washington. Brooklyn coach Jacque Vaughn said after the Nets' 125-123 win that Irving did not attend the game and that the player's absence was excused. Irving asked the Nets for a trade on Friday, a person with knowledge of the details told The Associated Press. PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Strong wind has stopped play in the AT&amp;T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. That means a Monday finish with no amateurs. Peter Malnati is atop the leaderboard at 12-under par. Keith Mitchell and Joseph Bramlett were two behind. Mitchell faced the strongest wind on the worst part of Pebble Beach along the ocean. He made it through and then the horn sounded to stop play. The culprit was Monterey Peninsula. Officials say two holes are so exposed that golf balls were blowing around on the green. Once play stops at one course, it has to stop on all three.

Detroit's Dylan Larkin had a hat trick, Toronto's Mitch Marner had three assists and the Atlantic Division topped the Central Division 7-5 in the All-Star Game final on Saturday. Matthew Tkachuk was the MVP after a seven-point performance in two games for the Atlantic Division. Arizona's Clayton Keller, Dallas' Jason Robertson, Colorado teammates Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen all had goals for the Central in the final.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman defended the way the league and two teams handled controversial developments involving Pride night celebrations. Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov did not take part in warmups citing religion for his refusal to wear a Pride-themed jersey. The New York Rangers opted not to wear Pride jerseys or use Pride stick tape as part of their night despite previously advertising they planned to do so. Bettman said the league has to respect individuals' choices. Also in his state of the NHL address at All-Star Weekend he announced the event next year will take place in Toronto and addressed concerns about the league's current playoff format.

 <li>The Wichita State Shockers hit the road Sunday for a 2 p.m. CT matchup with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.</li><li>WSU has been better on the road (3-2) than at home in AAC play with wins at SMU, ECU and USF.</li><li>WSU overcame a 16-point second half deficit to win the Jan. 14 meeting with Tulsa in Wichita, 73-69. Jaywon Walton led a group of five double-figure scorers with 19 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/james-rojas/7210">James Rojas</a>&nbsp;tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.</li><li>The Shockers look to sweep their home-and-home with Tulsa for the fifth time in six AAC seasons. They're 9-2 against the Hurricane since joining the league.</li><li>Tulsa is WSU's third-most-played opponent behind Drake (152 meetings) and Bradley (144). Sunday marks the 139th game in a series that began in 1931. The Shockers lead 75-63 with wins in 18 of the last 21.</li><li>WSU is 31-36 all-time in Tulsa but owns a 7-4 mark at the Reynolds Center. WSU has won four of its five visits in the American era with the lone loss coming on a buzzer-beater (Feb. 1, 2020).</li><li>WSU started the conference slate 0-3 but has victories in four of its last seven.</li><li>The Shockers played some of their best basketball in Thursday night's 70-61 home loss to No. 3 Houston, leading as late as the 6:25-mark of the second half before an 11-1 Cougar run turned the tide. Walton matched his career-high with 24 points to go with Rojas' 15. Helped by a&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kenny-pohto/7214">Kenny Pohto's</a>&nbsp;career-best 12 rebounds, WSU out-rebounded UH, 35-30, but finished the night just 3-of-20 from beyond the arc.</li><li>One of just two holdovers from last year's active roster, Porter is averaging 12.2 points and a team-best 6.0 rebounds. The senior point guard entered the weekend ranked among the AAC leaders in the rare trifecta of blocks (3rd, 1.71), assists (8th, 3.8) and steals (t-9th, 1.4).</li><li>One of nine new transfers, Walton is the team's leading scorer at 13.9 points-per-game. The junior wing is averaging 15.9 points in AAC play while shooting an incredible 73% from inside the arc.</li><li>Improvement from the starting frontcourt duo of Rojas (11.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 1.5 spg in AAC play) and Pohto (10.2 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 1.2 bpg) has played a major role in WSU's offensive improvement over the past three weeks.</li><li>The Shockers rank among the national leaders in field goal percentage defense, limiting foes to 39.4% (17th).</li>

The Jan. 14 Tulsa contest (AAC game No. 5) marked the first time that WSU's two leading scorers had both started a conference game together.</li><li>Per KenPom, WSU's offensive efficiency rating has been at 100-or-higher (better than the national average) in five of the last six games. That had happened just five times in the first 16 contests.</li><li>Over this six-game stretch, the Shockers are averaging 76.3 points (up from 64.9 ppg). Three-point and field goal percentages haven't improved much, but WSU is getting to the line with regularity, averaging 19.3 free throws-per-game on 24.7 attempts (78.4%) compared to 10.4 and 15.3 previously (68.0%). Glenn Attacking the Glass •&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jaelyn-glenn/8607">Jaelyn Glenn</a>&nbsp;has been strong on the boards in Big 12 action this season. • Glenn is averaging 7.30 rebounds per game in league action, which ranks sixth in Big 12 play this season. • The sophomore from Kansas City, Missouri, has pulled in five or more rebounds in all 10 league games, including consecutive games with 10 rebounds - against West Virginia and at Iowa State. • For the season, Glenn is averaging a team-high and career-best 5.65 rebounds per game. She has 13 games this season with five or more rebounds. Glenn has set a single-season career-high with 130 rebounds this season. • In her career, Glenn is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game. She owns 23 career games with five or more rebounds. Sharing is Caring • Kansas State continues its unselfish ways in the 2022-23 season, continuing its ball movement from last season. • This season, K-State has handed out 347 assists (15.1 apg) and have recorded an assist on 62.7 percent of made field goals. • The Wildcats rank sixth in the league in assists per game and fifth for assist to turnover ratio (1.12). She has 13 games this season with five or more rebounds. Glenn has set a single-season career-high with 130 rebounds this season. • In her career, Glenn is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game. She owns 23 career games with five or more rebounds. Gregory in Rare Air • K-State senior guard&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/gabby-gregory/8613">Gabby Gregory</a>&nbsp;is one of two players in the nation currently averaging 19 or more points, 5 or more rebounds, 2 or more assists and shooting 85 percent or better from the free throw line. • Among the two players this season with these averages, Gregory is the only player that was a transfer in the 2022-23 season. • If Gregory were to end this season with these averages, she would be the first Wildcat since Kendra Wecker in the 2004-05 season to achieve this feat.&nbsp; • Since the 2009-10 season, only two players at Big 12 programs have ended a season with averages of 19 or more points, 5 or more rebounds, 2 or more assists and shot 85 percent or better from the free throw line (Bridget Carleton, Iowa State, 2018-19; Ashley Joens, Iowa State; 2020-21).

WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;Wichita State's offensive woes continued for a second straight game, as the Shockers dropped a 70-60 contest to Memphis Saturday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena. Wichita State (13-10, 3-7) made a season-low 18 field goals and shot 32 percent overall. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jane-asinde/7152">Jane Asinde</a>&nbsp;collected her eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/trajata-colbert/7155">Trajata Colbert</a>&nbsp;picked up her second straight and fifth of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/ambah-kowcun/7201">Ambah Kowcun</a>&nbsp;scored all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter. Wichita State only turned the ball over 11 times, but its poor shooting was the difference. Take away the free throw line, where the Shockers were 21-of-26, and points would have been even more hard to come by. Memphis won the rebound battle, knocked down seven three-pointers and scored 23 second chance points off 14 offensive rebounds. Jamirah Shutes scored a game-high 21 to lead the Tigers. Memphis raced out to a double-digit lead, 13-3, in the first 5:11 behind a 9-0 run, forcing a Wichita State timeout. Another slow start on the offensive end contributed to the early hole. Wichita State missed 12 of its first 13 tries from the floor. Wichita State would finish the half with only nine points on 2-for-16 shooting leading to an 18-9 lead for the Tigers. Colbert and Duncan had half of the Shockers' points with six each. Memphis' defense continued to give Wichita State fits in the third quarter. Nine of the Shockers' 16 points in the period came from the free throw line, as they were just 3-of-13 from the field.
