In post-Roe world, college coaches search for middle ground

The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has added another complicated layer for college coaches to navigate. More than a dozen states have enacted laws against abortion. For decades, that topic has not necessarily been a consideration for female athletes choosing colleges. Now it is. And if the athlete lives in a state with strict abortion laws and chooses to tell their coach, the coach may be put in a difficult position. For some coaches, the constantly shifting landscape is making their profession more demanding than ever.

Curry, Warriors rally past NBA-best Bucks 125-116 in OT

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Stephen Curry scored 36 points with 22 of those in the fourth quarter and overtime, shining in his first home game back from a long injury absence and leading the Golden State Warriors past the NBA-best Milwaukee Bucks 125-116. Curry hit a tying 3-pointer with 19 seconds left in regulation then blocked a layup attempt by Jrue Holiday in the closing moments. The Warriors got the ball back with 1.9 seconds left and Curry inbounded to Draymond Green, who missed from deep. Khris Middleton had 19 points and five assists, Bobby Portis contributed 15 points and 13 rebounds and Brook Lopez 19 points and seven boards for Milwaukee.

Ramey lifts No. 8 Arizona over No. 2 UCLA for Pac-12 title

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Courtney Ramey made a 3-pointer with 16.7 seconds left to put Arizona in front and the eighth-ranked Wildcats beat No. 2 UCLA 61-59 in the Pac-12 championship game. The Wildcats boosted their case for a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. UCLA still hopes to land the No. 1 seed in the West and return to Las Vegas in two weeks for the regional. It was the second year in a row Arizona beat UCLA in the Pac-12 title game. Arizona second-year coach Tommy Lloyd can't lose in Las Vegas. He is 9-0 in the city, 8-0 at T-Mobile Arena and 6-0 in the Pac-12 Tournament. Azuolas Tubelis had 19 points and 14 rebounds for second-seeded Arizona. Amari Bailey led top-seeded UCLA with 19 points.

Bud Grant, stoic coach of powerful Vikings teams, dies at 95

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Stoic Hall of Fame football coach Bud Grant has died at the age of 95. The Vikings announced his death on Saturday. Grant took the Minnesota Vikings to four Super Bowls in eight years, all losses. He won 11 division titles in 18 seasons, featuring the mighty Purple People Eaters defense. His steely sideline gaze became synonymous with the Vikings squads he guided from 1967 to 1985. He demanded sharp focus from his players and banned sideline heaters during the frigid Minnesota winter. Grant was also a four-time champion coach in the Canadian Football League.

No. 7 Texas rolls past No. 3 Kansas 76-56 for Big 12 title

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dylan Disu overcame early foul trouble to score 18 points, Marcus Carr and Sir'Jabari Rice added 17 apiece, and seventh-ranked Texas silenced a heavily pro-Kansas crowd in a 76-56 romp over the third-ranked Jayhawks in the finals of the Big 12 Tournament. After going more than two decades without a Big 12 tourney title, the Longhorns have won two of the past three, and likely wrapped up a No. 2 seed in next week's NCAA Tournament with their performance in Kansas City. Jalen Wilson scored 24 points to lead the Jayhawks, who were the defending champs. They are still likely to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tourney on Sunday.

No. 6 Marquette routs Xavier 65-51 to win 1st Big East title

NEW YORK (AP) — Tyler Kolek and No. 6 Marquette raced out to a hefty lead and never looked back, beating No. 15 Xavier 65-51 to win the Big East Tournament for the first time. Kolek, the Big East player of the year, scored 20 points as the top-seeded Golden Eagles dominated a Big East final that brought a Midwestern flavor to Madison Square Garden. Coach Shaka Smart's surprising team will head into the NCAA Tournament with a nine-game winning streak after their first appearance in the Big East championship game resulted in one of their best performances of a scintillating season.

Filipowski, No. 21 Duke beat No. 13 Virginia for ACC title

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Freshman Kyle Filipowski added 20 points and 10 rebounds as the tournament's most valuable player to help No. 21 Duke beat No. 13 Virginia 59-49 in Saturday night's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament championship game. Jeremy Roach had 19 of his career-high 23 points after halftime as the Blue Devils secured a title in Jon Scheyer's debut season as the successor to Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski. Fourth-seeded Duke claimed a league-record 22nd championship with its ninth straight win. Reece Beekman scored 12 points to lead Virginia, which shot just 33% in chasing its fourth title.

'Not done yet': Skier Shiffrin continues quest for records

American skier Mikaela Shiffrin has surpassed Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark with a record 87th World Cup win. But she does not think it makes her the greatest ski racer of all time. Shiffrin says "people root for who they want to win – for whatever reason." Shiffrin turns 28 Monday and is bound to add to her tally of wins as other milestones will come her way. Stenmark says Shiffrin "can win more than 100." Records are also on the cards for Shiffrin when it comes to the number of crystal globes – the award for winning the season discipline or overall title.

Mikaela Shiffrin sets World Cup skiing record with 87th win

ARE, Sweden (AP) — American skier Mikaela Shiffrin has set the outright World Cup record for most career victories with 87 by winning a slalom. Shiffrin broke a tie with Ingemar Stenmark on the all-time overall winners list between men and women. The Swede competed in the 1970s and 80s. Shiffrin had matched Stenmark's mark of 86 wins with victory in a giant slalom Friday. Saturday's result marked the American's sixth slalom win of the season and the record-extending 53rd career win in the discipline. She has already locked up her fifth overall championship and the discipline titles in slalom and GS.

Scheffler has 2-shot lead at Players on record day of scores

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A long day at The Players Championship has ended with Masters champion Scottie Scheffler in the lead. Scheffler birdied his last hole and shot 65 to build a two-shot advantage over Min Woo Lee of Australia. Lee is the younger brother of U.S. Women's Open champion Minjee Lee. He had a 66 after a bogey on his final hole. It was a long day for Scheffler. Because of rain delays, he played 26 holes Saturday. It was an exciting day for Tom Hoge. He made the cut on the number and then set the TPC Sawgrass record at 62.

Sports Headlines for Sunday

EMPORIA, Kan.-The Hutchinson Salthawk Boys Basketball team came up short in the consolation third place game versus Topeka-Highland Park, but finished in fourth place in the 2023 State Class 5A Basketball losing to the Scotties 79-46 Saturday in Emporia.

The Salthawks struggled from the field only shooting 31.7% on 19 of 60 field goal attempts, and only 2 of 26 in three point attempts. &nbsp;That's far from the average of over 40% three point shooting for the season that the Salthawks were used to. But, Saturday just was a tough day for them. Take nothing away from Highland Park. They were the top ranked team coming into the tournament being ranked #1 all season long. The Scotties were tripped up by Andover in Friday's semi-final game 56-55 on a last second free throw, otherwise they would have been playing for a championship on Saturday. Andover ended up defeating Kapaun on Saturday for the Championship, as well.

Hutch High jumped out early, but Highland Park quickly responded to take a 15-10 lead into the second quarter. Then the Scotties went on a 20-12 run to lead at half time, 35-22. The Salthawk shooting woes continued in the third quarter only hitting 5-14 shots, 0-6 from long range while Highland Park was 7-11 for 63.6%. The fourth quarter was more of the same with the Salthawks being outscored 27-12.

Hutchinson was led in scoring by super sophomore Terrell King with 17 pts., Wade Meyer and Dauntay King added 9 points each, Nic Lange scored 6, Julian Smith and Daylee VanSyckle had 2 each and Jay Lewis scored 1. Garrett Robertson was held scoreless, but finished his high school career with 955 points scored in varsity competition over four years.

Highland Park put three players in double digits with "Bo" Aldridge scoring 16, Jahmir Kingcannon 22, Tre Richardson 14. Richardson will be playing football for Hutchinson Community College in the fall.

Another side note, Highland Park head coach Mike Williams played basketball for Hutchinson Community College in 2004-05 seasons, averaging 9.9 points per game for the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson (22-3) had a fantastic season by winning the AVCTL Championship. Winning the Dodge City Tournament of Champions, and being the third seed and a strong class 5A State Tournament field. The Salthawks have laid a foundation for the future. Hutch is only a few years removed from being 1-19. 22-3 looks pretty good.

Coach Miller gave special recognition to his program's seniors during his post game radio coaches show. &nbsp;He acknowledged Garrett Robertson, Wade Meyer, Dauntay King, Bradyn Rodriquez and Nic Lange for the accomplishments and achievements over the last couple of seasons.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;— Playing in its 16th&nbsp;Big 12 title game, No. 3 Kansas fell short to No. 7 Texas in the Big 12 Championship game at the T-Mobile Center on Saturday, 76-56. Kansas’ Jalen Wilson and Dajuan Harris were named to the Big 12’s All-Tournament Team.

Wilson led the Jayhawks with 24 points on 9-of-19 shooting, while junior Joseph Yesufu joined him in double-figures with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. Wilson’s 24-point performance marked his 27th&nbsp;career game with 20+ points, including his fifth-straight game. He also passed Wilt Chamberlain for No. 27 on KU’s all-time scoring list with 1,435 career points.

Texas was led by Dylan Disu’s 18 points, while Marcus Carr and Sir'Jabari Rice added 17 apiece.

The two teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first half, which saw Kansas trail 39-33 at the break. Wilson and Yesufu led the charge for the Jayhawks with Wilson’s 17 first half points. Yesufu added nine points before the break.

In the second half, Texas pulled away by outscoring the Jayhawks 37-23 over the final 20 minutes. The Longhorns shot 53.3% (16-of-30) during that span, while out-rebounding the Jayhawks 37-31 throughout the entirety of the game.

The Jayhawks shot 41.4 (24-of-58) from the field throughout the game and scored 28 of their 56 points in the paint. Texas finished the game shooting 50% (31-of-62).

Kansas will learn its destination for the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Sunday, March 12 during the Selection Sunday Show. The show begins at 5 p.m. CT on CBS.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Football team &nbsp;coach Phil Serchia announced via his Twitter account that he will be joining the staff of the LA Chargers.

Serchia spent the past three seasons with the Blue Dragons as its offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Serchia joins another former Blue Dragon coach in Brandon Staley who was the associate head coach and defensive coordinator back in 2010-11 with the Dragons.&nbsp;

Staley was named head coach of the Chargers in January 2021.

Serchia and his wife Alyssa have two daughters, Makena and Hallie, and one son, Kaden.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jalen Wilson had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Gradey Dick made a couple of crucial baskets during a second-half run that gave Kansas control, and the third-ranked Jayhawks went on to beat Iowa State 71-58 on Friday night to reach the Big 12 Tournament title game.

Dick finished with 15 points for the top-seeded Jayhawks (27-6), who fell behind early in the second half before the defending champs rallied to reach Saturday night's title game against seventh-ranked Texas or No. 22 TCU.

The Jayhawks were once again without Hall of Fame coach Bill Self, who is recovering after a hospital trip Wednesday night for what doctors with the University of Kansas Health System would only call “a standard procedure."

Longtime assistant Norm Roberts, serving as the acting coach, said Self addressed the Jayhawks remotely during breakfast and was “doing a lot better." It's still unclear whether he will be available to coach next week, when they begin defense of the NCAA title they won with a stirring comeback win over North Carolina last April.

Jaren Holmes had 16 points to lead the No. 5 seed Cyclones (19-13). Robert Jones finished with 11.

The first half between two teams very familiar with each other was sloppy and disjointed. They combined to commit 20 turnovers, some of them byproduct of tight defense but many entirely unforced.

Wilson got off to a hot start, hitting a trio of 3-pointers among his first four shots. The Cyclones weathered the barrage and were still within 29-25 late in the half, but Wilson's basket in the closing minute and another turnover that led to a runout dunk by KJ Adams sent the regular-season champs to the locker room with a 33-25 lead.

The Jayhawks' turnover trouble continued after the break, and Iowa State used a 10-2 run out of the locker room and another spurt moments later to take a 39-38 lead — its first of the game — with just under 15 minutes to go.

Yet the Jayhawks showed again the poise and precision that has made them so good come March.

Wilson answered Iowa State with a couple of free throws, starting the Jayhawks' own 10-2 run to regain control. Backup big man Ernest Udeh Jr. threw down a thunderous dunk off a nifty assist from Dajuan Harris Jr., who also had 11 points, and the lead unspooled again as Kansas fans began to drown out their Cyclone counterparts.

The Jayhawks were never threatened down the stretch as they clinched their spot in the title game.

Iowa State has adjusted to life without 3-point specialist Caleb Grill, who was dismissed from the team last week. Gabe Kalscheur and Holmes, who struggled from the field Friday night, have become an prolific backcourt duo that could cause some fits in the NCAA Tournament.

Kansas has played well while Roberts has been the acting coach. Along with two wins in the Big 12 Tournament, it went 4-0 with him on the bench when Self served a school-imposed four-game suspension to start the season. That included a win over Duke in the Champions Classic.

Kansas will play for the fourth time in the last five championship games Saturday night at T-Mobile Center.

EMPORIA, Kan.-The Hutchinson Salthawks Boys Basketball quest for a State Championship was derailed on Friday night by a hot shooting Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusader team in the second quarter with Kapaun going &nbsp;4 for 6 from distance to build a 33-20 lead at halftime that held up for the remainder of the game. Final score, Kapaun 71, Hutchinson 50.

The final score is not indicative as to how this game played out, as Kapaun was holding the Salthawks at bay with a &nbsp;10 to 13 point lead until the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

Hutch made a couple runs to cut the lead to nine and 10 points, but never could make the game any closer.

The Salthawks jumped out to a quick lead of six points at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter, but Kapaun came up with a 8-2 run to close the first quarter and led 13-11 and the end of the quarter.

The third quarter was back and forth, but the Crusaders took a 15 point lead into the final quarter leading 47-32.

Hutchinson was led by Terrell King with 15 points, Garrett Robertson added 14, Nic Lange eight pts and nine boards, Wade Meyer added six, and Julian Smith came off the bench to score five.

Kapuan was led by Corbin Johnson's 19 pts including 5 three pointers, Will Thengvall added 14, Will Anciux chipped in 13 and earned a double-double with 11 rebounds, Max Keller also had 14, Charles Teagan four, Dominic Shibley and Beau Dalian added two points each for the Crusaders.

Hutchinson (22-2) suffered only their second loss of the season and will play Topeka-Highland Park (23-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the third place game at White Auditorium in Emporia. Highland Park lost a heart breaker on Friday afternoon to Andover 55-54 on a last second free throw by Andover.

Andover will play Kapaun for the class 5A Championship at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday at White Auditorium in Emporia.

🏀 High School State semifinal scores from Friday

KANSAS CITY, Missouri –&nbsp;K-State confused the (15/16) Texas offense in the first half on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship, but the Longhorns overwhelmed the Wildcats in the second half to secure a 60-42 win.&nbsp;

K-State (17-16) saw all eight players that registered minutes on Friday card at least one point and were led by sophomore Jaelyn Glenn with 15 points.

Texas (24-8) was led by DeYona Gaston with 13 points. The Wildcat defense limited Longhorn All-Big 12 selections Rori Harmon and Shaylee Gonzales to a combined 3-of-26 effort from the field.

- K-State allowed a first quarter season-low six points to Texas in the first quarter and held an 8-6 advantage after the first 10 minutes. The previous low this season by a K-State opponent was seven by TCU on January 21. The Wildcats held the Longhorns to 20.0 percent (2-of-10) shooting and forced eight turnovers.

- The Wildcat defense continued to flummox the Longhorns, as K-State held Texas without a field goal for the first five minutes of the second quarter (0-of-10). K-State built a 16-7 lead with 5:12 remaining, as Sundell finished a three-point play and Eliza Maupin finished an alley-oop in transition to force a Texas timeout.

- Texas pushed its way back into the game with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 16 with 3:06 remaining. A Gregory runner with 44 seconds left ended a five-minute drought for the Wildcats and gave the Wildcats an 18-16 lead. A baseline jumper from Texas squared the game at 18 at halftime.

- K-State held Texas to 16.7 percent (5-of-30) shooting in the first half and forced the Longhorns into 11 turnovers including six by way of a K-State steal. The Wildcats shot 30.8 percent (8-of-26).

- Texas used a 19-1 run to outscore the Wildcats in the third quarter, 21-4, and take a 39-22 advantage into the fourth. K-State went without a made field goal for the final 7:49 of the quarter, shooting 1-of-9 from the floor for the entire frame.

- The Longhorns would increase its advantage to 23, 47-24, with 7:30 remaining in the fourth quarter.

- K-State would close the margin to 16, 58-42, with 46 seconds to play as Jaelyn Glenn connected on her third 3-pointer of the afternoon.

- The Wildcats finished the afternoon shooting 32.7 percent (16-of-49) from the field, which was bolstered by a 50.0 percent fourth quarter (7-of-14).

- Texas leads the series, 31-17, and has won eight straight in the series. The Wildcats are 3-2 all-time against the Longhorns in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championships.

The Wildcat defense limited Longhorn All-Big 12 selections Rori Harmon and Shaylee Gonzales to a combined 3-of-26 effort from the field.HOW IT HAPPENED- K-State allowed a first quarter season-low six points to Texas in the first quarter and held an 8-6 advantage after the first 10 minutes. The previous low this season by a K-State opponent was seven by TCU on January 21. The Wildcats held the Longhorns to 20.0 percent (2-of-10) shooting and forced eight turnovers.- The Wildcat defense continued to flummox the Longhorns, as K-State held Texas without a field goal for the first five minutes of the second quarter (0-of-10). K-State built a 16-7 lead with 5:12 remaining, as Sundell finished a three-point play and Eliza Maupin finished an alley-oop in transition to force a Texas timeout.- Texas pushed its way back into the game with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 16 with 3:06 remaining. A Gregory runner with 44 seconds left ended a five-minute drought for the Wildcats and gave the Wildcats an 18-16 lead. A baseline jumper from Texas squared the game at 18 at halftime.- K-State held Texas to 16.7 percent (5-of-30) shooting in the first half and forced the Longhorns into 11 turnovers including six by way of a K-State steal. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Friday night's semifinal in Emporia between the Hutch High Salthawks and the Kapaun Crusaders has significant meaning beyond the court.

Salthawk head coach Bryan Miller graduated Hutch High in 1997 and coached with Steve Eck during the 2019-2020 season at Hutchinson Community College.

"Coach Eck means everything to me," Miller said. "He gave me an opportunity after I got let go at Butler."

The Dragons went 23-9 that season, then Miller took the head coaching job at Hutch High.

"I have so much respect for coach Eck and how he runs his program," Miller said. "The success he's had is unparalleled. He is one of the most generous people I have ever been around."

Miller said his year with Eck allowed him to see just how generous the Hall of Fame coach was every day.

Would Miller still be coaching today if Eck didn't give him that opportunity in 2019?

"Possibly not," Miller said. "I try not to think about those type of things, but possibly not. I'm the type of person to think that everybody has their own journey that they have to go through and everybody has their own plan, and God kind of took me down that path to bring me back home."

The role is special to Miller, the Salthawk alumnus played for another one of his mentors, Phil Anderson.

As an assistant, Anderson helped the 1994 Blue Dragon men capture the NJCAA championship. He then went to Hutch High and guided the Salthawks to the 2001 Class 6A state championship. The 2002 squad finished as the Class 6A state runner-up.

Anderson just finished his ninth season as an assistant for Blue Dragon women's basketball, so he also has ties to coach Eck.

"I don't know really who I'm rooting for, I'd have to say probably rooting for coach Miller since he was a player of mine," Anderson noted.

"I've known coach Miller since he was in high school, I had the good fortune of coaching him. We've become very close in a variety of ways," Anderson shared.

Anderson will be in attendance Friday night at White Auditorium in Emporia, a place he knows all-too-well.

"I was thinking this morning, it would be such a great atmosphere to see White Auditorium packed as it was back in 2001 when we played in the state championship game," Anderson said.

"Bryan is maximizing his talent 100 percent," Eck said. "They just play hard for him, they guard. I just hope we can get the ball across half court," Eck said. "They really play hard."

What kind of feelings will coach Eck have at the conclusion of this game?

"Same as always," Eck said. "I mean, everything's good."

Friday night's winner moves on to the 6:15 p.m. championship Saturday. The loser will play for third place at 2 p.m. The 4 P.M. semifinal in Emporia features Topeka-Highland Park (23-0) and Andover (21-2).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs added three compensatory draft picks, according to an NFL release on Thursday. 

The highest of those is a third-rounder, resulting from personnel executive Ryan Poles leaving the Chiefs to become general manager of the Chicago Bears. Kansas City gained two third-round picks from Poles’ hiring. The first came in the 2022 draft and they packaged that with a sixth-round pick to acquire Kadarius Toney, whose punt return and touchdown catch were both key plays in the Chiefs recent Super Bowl win.

The additional compensatory picks were awarded as a result of the free agents lost (and gained) in 2022.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Everything seemed to be going against TCU entering the Big 12 Tournament. The Horned Frogs were coming off a lopsided loss to Oklahoma, they'd drawn a quarterfinal matchup against Kansas State for what felt like a road game, and some off-the-court issues threatened to become a distraction.

Mike Miles and Chuck O'Bannon made sure none of that mattered.

The duo hit four 3-pointers apiece and each had 22 points, silencing the heavily pro-Wildcats crowd and leading the No. 22 Horned Frogs to an 80-67 victory on Thursday night to reach the tournament semifinals.

TCU will face seventh-ranked Texas, which routed Oklahoma State in its quarterfinal, on Friday night.

“We all came together, knew what we needed to do,” Miles said. “When you make shots, everything is better. Chuck started to make shots. I started to make shots. And it gave us energy on the defensive end.”

TCU played without center Eddie Lampkin Jr., who posted screenshots on social media a day earlier of text messages that appeared to accuse coach Jamie Dixon of player mistreatment and “racial comments.” Dixon and the school have declined to comment on the posts other than to say Lampkin had stepped away from the team.

JaKobe Coles added eight points and Emanuel Miller seven for the sixth-seeded Horned Frogs (21-11), who had been beaten by the Wildcats in four of the past five tournaments but will now play for a spot in the title game.

“We didn't really take any bad shots all game long. I would struggle to find one or two,” Dixon said. “We did a lot of shooting yesterday, we did a lot of shooting these last two days. The guys worked so hard, they focused, they were ready. My coaches came in after warmups and said, 'They’re ready. They're ready to play a good team.'”
