ADA, Okla. – East Central University Athletic Director,&nbsp;<a href="https://ecutigers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/matt-cole/566">Matt Cole</a>, announced Wednesday the promotion of&nbsp;<a href="https://ecutigers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/heather-hurt-robben-/1698">Heather Hurt</a>&nbsp;&nbsp;to be the fifth Tiger head women's basketball coach. "I am pleased to name Heather as the head coach of our women's basketball program," Cole said. "She is an established and valued member of our athletic department coaching staff after serving nine seasons as the assistant coach, and I look forward to the great things ahead with her at the helm of the program." Hurt took charge of the program in late December after former head coach, Matt Cole, stepped down to take the position as ECU Director of Athletics. "I am very humbled and thankful to become the next head women's basketball coach at East Central University," Hurt said. "I would like to thank President Godwin and Coach Cole for trusting me to lead this program. I could not be more thankful for the support Coach Cole has given me over the nine years we've worked together." Throughout her time as interim head coach, Hurt led the Tigers to the No. 7 seed in the 2022-23 Great American Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament despite a tough beginning to the season. Wichita State fell to 6-6 and 4-4 on the road this season. The two teams will meet again on April 26 in Wichita, Kansas. &nbsp; After a scoreless first inning, Wichita State’s Mauricio Millan reached base on a dribbler past the pitcher in the top half of the second. With two outs, Kansas’ Jake English caught Millan stealing to end the top-half of the second as the score stood at 0-0. &nbsp; Kansas continued the action in the bottom of the second, as Cole Elvis doubled to the right-center gap with no outs. ⚾ BSB: Kansas shuts out Wichita State in home opener

Big 12 scoring and rebounding leader Jalen Wilson&nbsp;of Kansas is the unanimous pick as The Associated Press Big 12 player of the year.

Kansas State senior forward Keyontae Johnson joined Wilson as the only unanimous first-team picks in the selections revealed Tuesday. Johnson, a transfer from Florida who has turned into a top player after&nbsp;a frightening collapse more than two years ago, was also selected as newcomer of the year in voting by a panel of 17 journalists who cover the league.

First-year Kansas State coach Jerome Tang was voted as coach of the year. After 19 seasons as an assistant for coach Scott Drew at Baylor, including the national championship two years ago, Tang directed the Wildcats to a 23-8 record in the regular season and third place in the Big 12 standings after being picked to finish last in a preseason poll of league coaches.

Wilson, a 6-foot-8 junior forward, goes into this week's Big 12 tournament leading the league with 19.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.&nbsp;The 6-6 Johnson&nbsp;averages 17.8 points and 7.0 rebounds.

Texas graduate guard Marcus Carr, Baylor senior guard Adam Flagler and K-State junior guard Markquis Nowell round out the first-team picks. The 5-8 Nowell is the Big 12's top free-throw shooter (88.5%), and also leads the league with 7.7 assists and 2.5 steals a game.

The second-team picks are senior Damion Baugh and junior Mike Miles Jr. from TCU, along with Kansas freshman guard Gradey Dick, Baylor freshman guard Keyonte George and Kansas senior guard Kevin McCullar Jr., a transfer from Texas Tech.

Johnson got 13 of the 17 votes for newcomer of the year, while Baylor's George got the other four.

Tang was the overwhelming choice for top coach with 15 votes. The remaining two votes went to Texas interim coach Rodney Terry, who led the Longhorns to a second-place finish in the Big 12 following the&nbsp;December dismissal and eventual firing of Chris Beard.

FORT WORTH –&nbsp;A Houston fourth quarter surge and turnovers put an end to Wichita State's run in the American Athletic Conference Championship with a 72-64 loss Wednesday night in the semifinals. Wichita State (18-14) came up one game shy of the title game and now awaits its postseason fate. The Shockers will be in the conversation for a WNIT berth. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/curtessia-dean/7199">Curtessia Dean</a>&nbsp;scored a team-high 15 points and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/trajata-colbert/7155">Trajata Colbert</a>&nbsp;added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go with seven rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/shamaryah-duncan/7156">Shamaryah Duncan</a>&nbsp;had an all-around game, finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds, while chasing around Houston's top scorers all night long on the defensive end. <a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jane-asinde/7152">Jane Asinde</a>&nbsp;logged seven points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals before fouling out. Houston turned those miscues into 19 points. Wichita State shot 46 percent overall and 5-of-11 from beyond the arc on 18 assists. The Cougars only had 10 turnovers and shot 43 percent. Tiara Young scored a game-high 26 points, 10 of those in the fourth quarter when Houston stretched the lead. The first quarter featured five lead changes after Wichita State grabbed a 9-5 lead on a&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/shamaryah-duncan/7156">Shamaryah Duncan</a>&nbsp;three-pointer with 5:51 to go. The margin stayed within two points until Laila Blair started to heat up. A pull-up jumper from Blair made it 18-14 with 1:56 on the clock. She would score the final nine points for Houston, the last coming on a triple to give the Cougars a 23-17 lead at the end of the quarter. Blair scored 11 first quarter points and Tiara Young added nine to create a two-headed scoring attack. Wichita State's defense tightened up in the second quarter, holding Houston to just 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting. The Cougars led by as many as eight in the quarter, but their offensive struggles allowed Wichita State to climb back and take the lead, 30-29, at the 2:07 mark. The lead traded hands twice in the final 1:22 until a pair of free throws sent Houston into the locker room with a 34-32 lead. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are about to have two big holes to fill, along with plenty of salary cap space to do it, as they enter free agency and begin putting together a roster for the defense of their Super Bowl title.

The Chiefs plan to decline using the franchise tag for the second time on left tackle Orlando Brown Jr., and they will release pass rusher Frank Clark, a person familiar with the decisions told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because neither of the moves has been officially made.

The Chiefs and Brown's representatives spent all last season working on a long-term deal for him, but the two sides never could reach an agreement and he wound up earning about $16.6 million on the franchise tag. Brown would have made more under second-year franchise tag rules and the Chiefs were unwilling to go there with his salary.

The deadline for teams to use the franchise tag is later Tuesday. And the Chiefs and Browns could still agree to a long-term deal by Monday, at which point he can begin negotiating with other teams.

“As always, it's more beneficial for us to get something done long term,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said last week at the scouting combine. “Unlike last year, I think we have at least a runway to work with. We've gotten to know his team a little bit better. We're excited to get that process started.”

The Chiefs, who also could lose right tackle Andrew Wylie to free agency, sent a package of draft picks to the Ravens to acquire Brown ahead of the 2021 season. He went on to start every game but one over two seasons in Kansas City, earning Pro Bowl nods each year and helping the Chiefs beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl last month.

What the 27-year-old Brown could demand on the open market is somewhat polarizing, though. He ranked in the top third of offensive tackles in metrics such as pass-block win rate but has been inconsistent at times.

As for Clark, the Chiefs were hoping to restructure a contract that would have been prohibitive for next season — the pass rusher would have counted nearly $29 million against the salary cap. They were able to do that last season and keep Clark in the fold, but they were unable to come to a similar agreement over the past two weeks.

The 29-year-old Clark had five sacks this past regular season before adding 2 1/2 more in the playoffs, moving him into third in postseason sacks since the NFL made them an official statistic in 1982. The victory over the Eagles also gave Clark his second Super Bowl ring in four years in Kansas City.

“I actually talked to him at the (Super Bowl victory) parade,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said last week. “He had to do some stuff for the actual exit physical, but I had a good talk with him. I love Frank Clark. It's just, you know, Veach has got to juggle all these different things going on. But Frank, he's a top-notch guy. I love him. Love him to death.”

Much like Brown, the Chiefs would be keen to reach an agreement with Clark once he hits free agency. He became a locker-room leader this past season, and rookie George Karlaftis praised Clark for helping him adapt to the NFL.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 73-68 loss to the Coffeyville Red Ravens on Tuesday evening in the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons held a slim 6-4 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter. That would be the only lead HutchCC would have the entire game.

Hutchinson (23-8) trailed 14-7 after the first quarter and then outscored the Red Ravens in the second period to pull within 27-23 at halftime.

Coffeyville (20-12) did most of its damage from behind the arc, knocking down 11-of-21 attempts from deep. Kyleigh Ortiz led the Red Ravens' charge with eight of the made triples to account for a game-high 26 points.

The Blue Dragons tried to make a push in the third quarter, but ultimately went into the final quarter trailing 53-47. Hutchinson pulled within five with under 40 seconds left in the fourth, but Red Raven free throws doomed the Blue Dragons' comeback bid.

HutchCC knocked down 23-of-60 shots for 38 percent, while going 6-of-17 (35 percent) from the three-point line. The Blue Dragons made 16-of-22 (72 percent) free throws, as well.

Coffeyville connected on 22-of-49 (44 percent) shots and 18-of-26 (69 percent) from the charity stripe.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons were led by Morgan Browning's 16 points. Kali Howard had 13. The Red Ravens were paced by Ortiz, but also received 14 points from Tetona Woods-Blackowl.

The Red Ravens advance to the Region VI semifinal against Dodge City on Friday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Garvey Center on the Friends University campus.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons eliminated in Region VI quarterfinal

GREAT BEND, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team wrapped up its season on Tuesday with a 72-68 loss at No. 20 Barton in the Region VI quarterfinal.

The Blue Dragons committed three turnovers in the final minute, which led to a 9-0 Cougar run to end the game and the Blue Dragons' season.

Hutchinson (20-12) jumped out to a red-hot start to grab a nine-point lead with 15:19 in the first half, matching the largest lead the Blue Dragons had for the game. Barton (23-8) kept chipping away and tied the game up at 38 going into halftime.

The Blue Dragons surrendered the lead for the first time early in the second half and were forced to battle from behind. The Cougars on the other hand extended that lead to eight with 15:07 left in the contest.

Hutchinson knocked down 10 three-point shots in the loss. The 19 Blue Dragon turnovers proved costly, resulting in 22 Barton points. The Cougars connected on 56 percent (28-of-50) of their shots, including 13-of-19 (68 percent) from the foul line. Hutchinson shot 41 percent (25-of-61) from the floor, and 8-of-12 (66 percent) from the line.

Aaron Franklin collected his 10th double-double of the season with a 12-point, 14-rebound game to lead the Blue Dragons. Antonio Green and Aaron Potter each added 11 off the bench for HutchCC. Barton had four players in double figures, led by Cougar Downing's 16 points.

The Cougars advance to the Region VI semifinal against Coffeyville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday inside the Garvey Center at Friends University.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Head coach Jerome Tang was named one of 25 finalists for the 2023 Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award, which is annually given to the top Division I minority coach, on Tuesday (March 7).

The award is named for Jobe, an icon in the history of basketball at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. A former head coach at Alabama A&amp;M, Alabama State, Talladega, Tuskegee and South Carolina State, Jobe is best known for his 12-year stint as the head coach at Southern, where he led the Jaguars to 209 wins and four NCAA Tournament appearances. His team knocked off No. 2 seed Georgia Tech in the 1993 NCAA Tournament.

Tang is joined on the high-major list by Pittsburgh's Jeff Capel, Providence's Ed Cooley, Missouri's Dennis Gates, Memphis' Anfernee Hardaway, Houston's Kelvin Sampson, Marquette's Shaka Smart, Vanderbilt's Jerry Stackhouse, Texas' Rodney Terry and Indiana's Mike Woodson.

His 23 wins tie Bob Huggins for the second-most by a first-year head coach in school history, while he is the fifth K-State head coach to win 20 games in his first season.

On Sunday, Tang became the seventh head coach in school history to earn conference Coach of the Year honors, including the third in the Big 12 era (joining Frank Martin and Bruce Weber). He joins Bruce Weber (2013) as the only coaches to be chosen for the distinction in their first seasons.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech has named second-year assistant Corey Williams as its interim coach for Big 12 tournament as the school continues its investigation of suspended coach Mark Adams. The school is doing a more thorough inquiry into Adams’ interactions with his players and staff after the coach’s suspension for what the school says was the “use of an inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comment” when addressing a player last week. Adams was suspended Sunday. He had coached the regular season-ending loss to Oklahoma State at home Saturday. That came a day after athletic director Kirby Hocutt was made aware of the incident and gave Adams a written reprimand.

UNDATED (AP) — UCLA has climbed to No. 2 behind Houston in the latest Associated Press men's college basketball poll. The Cougars earned 58 first-place votes to remain on top for a third straight weekl. The Bruins' move to No. 2 represented their highest ranking this season. They received the other three first-place votes. Kansas, Alabama and Purdue rounded out the top five. Texas A&amp;M climbed six spots to No. 18 for the week's biggest jump. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints say former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has agreed to a four-year contract. A person familiar with the situation said the deal could be worth up to $150 million. The person spoke to The Associated Press about the contract’s value on condition of anonymity because financial terms were not released. Carr turns 32 this month. He played nine seasons for the Raiders and holds team records for yards and touchdowns passing. Saints coach Dennis Allen was the Raiders’ coach when the team selected Carr in the second round of the 2014 draft. Las Vegas released Carr on Feb. 14 to avoid guaranteeing him $40.4 million of his contract over the next two years.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to terms with quarterback Geno Smith on a three-year contract that keeps the AP comeback player of the year in the Pacific Northwest. The contract is the first big payday in Smith's career. He will go into 2023 as the presumptive starter with the Seahawks and a chance to build upon his success from last year. Smith was one of the feel-good stories in the league last season, leading Seattle to a 9-8 record and a playoff berth. He threw for 4,282 yards, a career best and a franchise record. He also led the NFL in completion percentage.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says the Las Vegas Raiders have placed the franchise tag on running back Josh Jacobs. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move hasn’t been announced. Jacobs will make $10.1 million next season under the franchise tag. The sides have been negotiating a long-term deal. The Raiders would remove the tag if the sides reach an agreement by July 15. Jacobs led the league in 2022 with 1,653 yards rushing and 2,053 yards from scrimmage.

Batting averages across the league are up slightly from last spring training, from .259 to .263. Left-handed hitters seem to be benefitting most, with their collected average up from .255 to .274. Sluggers like the New York Yankees' Anthony Rizzo are enjoying taking at-bats without a wall of defenders in shallow right field. Rizzo says that "young left-handed hitters will be introduced to the 3-4 hole that’s been gone for about seven to eight years.”

The 38-year-old Turner fell to the ground after getting drilled by right-hander Matt Manning. Medical personnel rushed to the plate, and Turner was bleeding and had a towel on his face as he walked off the field. Turner’s wife, Kourtney, posted to Instagram that the infielder had “16 stitches and a lot of swelling but we are thanking God for no fractures &amp; clear scans.”

Sports Headlines for Tuesday

After a 5-1 week and two scintillating games in a national matchup on Saturday with its conference rival, the Hutchinson Community College softball team moved up two spots to 18th in the latest NJCAA Division I Softball Rankings of the season on Monday.

The Blue Dragons swept the Sterling College JV in a pair of run-rule games (12-0, 12-4), swept Colby in the KJCCC opener (9-1, 5-1) and split with the Butler Grizzles, which moved from No. 18 to No. 15 this week.

Aspen Goetz hit a walk-off two-run home run to help Hutchinson defeat Butler 5-4 in Game 1 on Saturday at Fun Valley. The Grizzlies took the second game 6-5 in 10 innings.

The Blue Dragons are now 15-4 overall and 3-1 in the Jayhawk Conference.

Hutchinson is scheduled to play Dodge City on Wednesday at Fun Valley and will travel to Great Bend to play Barton on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons have been ranked in nine consecutive polls dating back to last season.

Grayson remains the No. 1 team in the rankings. Northwest Florida State is no. 2 and Florida SouthWestern is No. 3.

Former Dragon opponents who are ranked are: Murray State, still No. 1 in Division II, Weatherford, receiving votes in Division I and Butler at No. 15.

The Hutchinson Community College Spirit Squad earned two runner-up finishes on Sunday at the 2023 Region VI Cheer and Dance Championships.

The Blue Dragon Cheer Squad finished second in the Advanced Small Co-ed division.

The Dragon Dolls earned second place in Jazz and fourth in Hip-Hop.

Both teams finished in the top 10 highest scores overall from the day.

Dragon Doll soloists Maggie Strobel and Rubi Rodriguez also finished in the Top 10 out of 20 competitors.

The Spirit Squad will perform these routines again at the Blue Dragon Cheer and Dance Showcase on Saturday, April 1st at the&nbsp;&nbsp;Sports Arena before the group travels to the NCA and NDA College Nationals in Daytona, Florida in April.

PEARLAND, Texas — Teddy Allen led five double-figure scorers with 32 points to aid the Wichita Sky Kings to their 2nd TBL (The Basketball League) win over the Pearland Texas Warrions in Pearland, Texas, on Sunday night 113-102. Allen paced the Sky Kings with 5 for 9,&nbsp; 55.6% shooting from the outside.&nbsp; As a team, the Sky Kings shot 52.7% on 39 of 74 shooting from the field.&nbsp; Wichita had a big 65-44 lead at halftime. The Warriors made a second half run, but came up short in the end with the Sky Kings earning their second first season win.

Brandon Watkins' had 16points. Kameron Willams 14 pts. and Terrell Brown added 12. Next action for the Wichita Sky Kings will be Saturday night at 6 as they travel to Rockwall, Texas to take on the Rockwall 7ERS. Wichita will finish out its start-of-the-season road trip a game in Enid, Oklahoma, on March 12.&nbsp;&nbsp;They return home to open the home part of the season at Koch Arena on the campus of Wichita State University on March 17 versus the Shreveport Mavericks.Kids 10 and under are admitted free with a paying adult.
