INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — The Dragons (15-4, 9-4) forced 22 turnovers Wednesday night on the road against the Pirates (9-10, 5-8).

Hutchinson got 27 points off those turnovers and held Indy to 17 total points in the first half.

The Dragons started 1-4 on the road this season, but have won all three road games of 2023.

Hutchinson, now winners of five straight, only turned the ball over 10 times in the contest.

Mya Williams shot 12 of 19 from the floor and finished with 28 points .

Monae Duffy notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Journey Armstead (14) and Morgan Browning (12) also scored in double figures for Hutchinson.

Indy shot just 31% for the contest, including an ice-cold 17% (3-17) to start the game.

The Dragons took just nine three-point attempts and shot 46.4% overall.

Hutchinson hit 15 of 17 free throws (88.2%) despite shooting 67% for the season.

Valentina Ojeda provided the lone bright spot for Independence with her 24-point, 12-rebound performance.

Riding a four-game winning streak, the Hutchinson Community College women’s bas- ketball team opens the second half of conference play on Wednesday against Indepen- dence.

The Blue Dragons (14-4, 8-4 KJCCC) and the Pirates (9-9, 5-7) will tip off at 5:30 p.m. at the ICC Fieldhouse in Independence. The game will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network and broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m.

The Blue Dragons start the second time through the Jayhawk Conference season tied for fourth with Coffeyville. The Dragons are single game behind both Butler and Barton for second place and three games behind KJCCC leader Dodge City with 12 games remaining in the regular season.

The Blue Dragons enter play on Wednesday after a 71-53 road victory on Saturday at Garden City. Sophomore Mya Williams scored a season-high 28 points and freshman Monae Duffy posted her second-straight double-double with a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Blue Dragons used a late 17-5 run to pull away from the Bronc- busters.

Independence battled Butler down to the wire on Saturday at the ICC Fieldhouse, but lost 72-63. The Pirates had a four-points lead midway through the fourth quarter, but scored only five points in the final 6 minutes, 32 seconds of the game.

The Blue Dragons won the first meeting with the Pirates 61-53 on November 16 in

the Sports Arena. Hutchinson hit only 2 of 18 3-point goals and shot only 29.5 percent overall, but got 21 points from Williams, 12 points from Kali Howard and 7 points and 21 rebounds from Duffy in the victory. D’yanna Maxey had 18 points and four assists to pace the Pirates. Independence’s leading scorer, Valentina Ojeda played with foul through and was held to 10 points.

Saturday’s win at Garden City gave the Blue Dragons a 3-4 road record for the sea- son. The Blue Dragons have lost two in a row at the ICC Fieldhouse.

Williams is now just 44 points from becoming just the sixth Blue Dragon player to score 1,000 career points. Williams is currently ninth on the Hutchinson career scoring list.

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team looks to regroup after a Saturday loss at Garden City and tries to do so with a tough road battle on Wednesday at Independence.

The Blue Dragons (12-6, 6-6 KJCCC) and Pirates (6-12, 4-8 KJCCC) tip off the second half of the Jayhawk Conference season at 7:30 p.m. at the ICC Fieldhouse in Indepen- dence.

The Blue Dragons had a three-point lead over Garden City late in the first half, but the Busters scored the final nine points of the opening half and outscored the Blue Dragons 64-50 in the final 20 minutes.

Sophomore Jayden Garrison poured in a career-high 31 points, matching a career high with 7 of 11 3-pointers to pace the Dragons, who shot better than 50 percent for the second time this season.

The Blue Dragons defeated Independence 99-94 in the 2022-23 Jayhawk Conference opener on November 16 at the Sports Arena. Aaron Franklin scored a career-high 36 points in the first meeting with the Pirates. Franklin added 10 rebound and a career-best six steals. Kernan Bundy and Aaron Potter scored 13 points each and Garrison added 10 points. Johan Nziemi hit 13 of 15 total shot attempts to score a team-high 34 points to lead Independence.

The Pirates have lost 3 of 4, including an 84-81 home loss to Butler on Saturday. All three of those losses were by four points or less. Seven of Independence’s 12 losses this season have been by less than 10 points.

Josh Smith had 26 points and Kam Parker had 20 points to lead the Pirates in the Saturday loss to Butler.

With 205 3-point goals already this season, the 2022-23 Blue Dragons have already climbed to No. 9 on the Hutchinson team 3-point charts for a season. Last season, the&nbsp;Blue Dragons obliterated the team record with 321 3-point goal.

What a basketball game last night between Kansas and Kansas State. Johnson scored 24 points, including the go ahead alley-oop dunk with 25 seconds left in overtime. Number 13 K-State beats #2 ranked Kansas 83-82 to snap a seven game series skid. Desi Sills had 24. Nick Hogan and Tomlin 15 points ten boards and Kansas State now moves to 16 and 2. Jalen Wilson did everything in his power. He finishes with a career high, 38 points for KU that drops now to 16 and 2. K.J. Adams had 17. Grady Dick 16, though both those players ended up fouling out and not being able to help down the late stretch.  

Elsewhere in the Big 12, #12, Iowa State upset Number 7, Texas, 78-67, Iowa State. Really good. 21st ranked Baylor beat Texas Tech 81-74. 

Basketball  on the high school hardwoods last night game here on BW radio sports. Hutchinson high school girls suffered their first loss of the year. Just couldn't get it going. Derby, 57. Hutchinson 23. Southeast of Saline Girls down Sterling 58-21. 

A lot of boys tournaments going on throughout the state. Here are games from last night. Gossel beat Fairfield 63-48, Concordia over Halstead 72-46 Haven blows out Winfield 72-46. They remain unbeaten. 

Sterling over Trinity Catholic 68-51. Wichita Independent beat Nickerson 67 to 52. Hutch High boys are off until their next action Thursday against Newton as they'll be out in the Tournament of Champions in Dodge City playing Thursday, Friday and Saturday. 

The HutchCC men and women are on  the road to take on Independence tonight. The 14 and 4 women will play at 5:30 our pregame at 5:15 here on BW Radio. 

The women have won four in a row. The 12 and 6 men will get underway. Then after that game, right around 7:30. 

Fans who want  to see the Chiefs play the Buffalo Bills at a neutral site AFC Championship Game in Atlanta have the opportunity to buy tickets this week. And if I were announcing yesterday that season ticket members for both teams who previously opted in to purchase AFC Championship game tickets will have an exclusive pre-sale opportunity on Wednesday.

In fact, the Chiefs are so healthy these days that even running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and tight end Jody Fortson, who had been on injured reserve, were back on the practice field. Neither is likely to play against Jacksonville, but their return opens up the possibility that they could contribute later in the playoffs should Kansas City advance.

Lawrence improved to 37-0 as a starting quarterback on that day when the Jacksonville Jaguars rallied from 27 points down to stun the Los Angeles Chargers 31-30 in an AFC wild-card game last weekend. Lawrence’s undefeated stretch spans high school, college and the past two Saturday nights in Jacksonville. ATLANTA (AP) — The NFL has directed the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills to begin selling tickets for a possible AFC championship game in Atlanta on Jan. 29. The game would be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium if both teams win at home in the divisional round this weekend. If either loses, the game would be hosted by the higher-seeded team. The top-seeded Chiefs are hosting Jacksonville, while the No. 2 seed Bills are facing Cincinnati. The NFL revised its playoff format after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field, leaving the Chiefs with one more game than the Bills.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Staley will be back for a third season as the Los Angeles Chargers head coach. The same can not be said for some of his offensive staff. The team on Tuesday announced that offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and quarterbacks coach Shane Day have been fired after two years. Criticism about Lombardi’s play-calling increased throughout the season. The Chargers were ranked ninth in total offense, but 20th in scrimmage yards per play along with the third-worst rushing attack in the league.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers believes he can still produce at an MVP level in the right situation if he opts to play next season. Rodgers discussed the uncertainty of his future plans Tuesday during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on SiriusXM and YouTube. The four-time MVP hasn’t decided whether to return to the Packers, retire or request a trade. Rodgers said he didn't know whether Green Bay would represent the ideal situation for him and expressed hope the Packers would keep several of their veteran free agents.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The NCAA hopes a federal appeals court will soon block a lawsuit that seeks to treat athletes as employees who are paid for their time. It is the latest test of amateurism in college sports. The Division I athletes who filed the suit being argued next month want hourly wages similar to those earned in work-study programs. They say the nation’s colleges are violating fair labor practices by failing to pay them for the time they put into their sports. Baylor University President Linda Livingston, chairperson of the NCAA's Board of Governors, says the idea would have a "potentially catastrophic impact on college sports.”

UNDATED (AP) — Police say Georgia football player Devin Willock wasn't wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle in a weekend crash that killed him and a recruiting staff member. Athens-Clarke County police list excessive speed on a road with a 40 mph limit as a primary cause of the crash early Sunday. The wreck occurred in Athens a few hours after a parade and ceremony honoring the team's second straight national championship. The 20-year-old Willock, an offensive lineman from New Jersey, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy, died shortly after at a hospital.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Following back-to-back road games, the Kansas Jayhawks are back home at Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Jan. 18, to face West Virginia in a mid-week Big 12 matchup.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on Big 12 NOW, with Josh Klingler and Brenda VanLengen on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the Jayhawk Radio Network from Learfield, with Steven Davis and David Lawrence calling the action.

Kansas has played two ranked opponents in the past three games and fallen to 12-4 (2-3 Big 12) on the year following an 80-74 defeat at No. 19 Oklahoma on Saturday. KU opened Big 12 play 2-0 for only the fourth time since the formation of the conference, and first time since 2012-13.

Wyvette Mayberry matched her season-high with 20 points at Oklahoma, as she hit 7-of-14 field goal attempts and all five of her free throws. Mayberry has scored in double figures three times in conference play and ranks fourth on the team with 10.4 points per game.

Kansas also got double-figure scoring games at OU from Zakiyah Franklin and Ioanna Chatzileonti. Franklin had 15 points and surpassed 1,200 career points in the process. She’s now 22nd on KU’s all-time scoring list with 1,204 points as a Jayhawk. Chatzileonti had 10 points and eight rebounds, good for her fourth game in double figures this season.

Taiyanna Jackson finished two points shy of a double-double as she totaled eight points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots against the Sooners. Jackson is the only player in the Big 12 averaging a double-double as she leads KU with 15.1 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. She’s also ranked third in the nation in blocked shots (48) and sixth in field goal percentage (64.2).

West Virginia is 12-4 (3-2 Big 12) this season under first-year head coach Dawn Plitzuweit. The Mountaineers feature the top scoring defense in the conference, holding opponents to 56.3 points per game on 37.2 percent shooting. WVU has won three straight games, defeating Kansas State, TCU and No. 18 Baylor after starting conference play 0-2.

Kansas and West Virginia have faced each other 22 times, with 20 coming since the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 Conference a decade ago. K-State (16-2, 5-1 Big 12) snapped a 7-game losing streak to its longtime rival in the 298th&nbsp;meeting and in the first top-15 matchup since 2013, while ending Kansas' 10-game overall winning streak. The Wildcats are off to their best overall start since 2009-10, while they are 5-1 in Big 12 play for the first time since 2007-08. The Wildcats continued to build their lead over the next few minutes, capping out at 33-19 after a pair of free throws from sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/cam-carter/9658">Cam Carter</a>&nbsp;with 8:17 remaining. Kansas slowly chipped away at the lead, scoring 17 of the next 22 points to close to within 38-36 with 2:04 to play before halftime. However, K-State was able to have a strong close to the half with 6 of the final 9 points, including a jumper by Johnson just before the halftime horn, to take a 44-39 lead. The Wildcats scored 7 of the first 10 points out of halftime to extend their lead to 51-42 right before the first media timeout with just over 15 to play. But once again the Jayhawks made a run to take their first lead at 58-57 on a pair of free throws by junior&nbsp;Jalen Wilson&nbsp;with 8:40 to play. With the game knotted at 61-all, Johnson scored 5 straight points to give K-State a 66-61 lead with just over 5 to play. However, Kansas answered with 6 of the next 7 points to tie the game at 67-all with 3:10 remaining. With the score tied at 72-all with 23 seconds left, Tomlin was able to turn over junior&nbsp;Dajuan Harris&nbsp;with 4 seconds left, giving Johnson one last chance to win in regulation, but his layup was just short at the buzzer. In the extra period, the teams once again went back and forth. Wilson gave Kansas an 80-78 lead on a 3-pointer with 2:24 to play but Johnson was able to tie it up at 80-all on a pair of free throws on the next possession. DERBY, Kan.—For a momement in the 2nd quarter, the Hutchinson Salthawk girls were able to close the gap to only trail the #4 team in class 6A, 13 to 10, but then Derby totaly dominated the next 4 minutes to go to the locker room at halftime with a 37 to 12 lead, and that was all they needed. Derby blitzed the Salthawks 57 to 23 to win their 15th straight over Hutchinson.

Hutchinson only was able to generate enough offense to score 7 points in the first quarter and 5 in the 2nd. Then they were held to 2 third quarter points while Derby put 24 points on the scoreboard in the 2nd and 18 points in the 3rd to initiate a running clock in quarter 4.

Josie McLean led Hutchinson in scoring with 7 points, followed up by Grace Posch with 5 and Aliyah Green scored 4 points.

Derby's leading scorers were Destiny Smith with 21, and 18 for Iowa State commit Addy Brown. Jaden Wilson also contributed 7.

The Salthawks did hold the Panthers to on 2 points in the 4th quarter when Derby had mostly reserves in the game at the time.

Next action for Hutchinson (8-1) will be at the Shawnee Heights tournament in Topeka on January 26th.&nbsp; The seedings for that tournament will be released next Monday.

Dak Prescott outplayed Tom Brady throwing for four touchdowns, running for another, and Dallas wins 31-14 over Tampa in an NFC wild card playoff game. Dallas beat Brady for the first time in the seven time Super Bowl Champions career. Cowboys earn a trip to San Francisco to take on the 49'ers in the NFC divisional round at next Sunday. 

Jim Harbaugh is staying at Michigan, a decision he personally gave the school president on Monday to end another round of speculation he would return to the NFL. Harbaugh and the school have not reached an agreement on a contract extension. Both sides plan to work on the new deal this week. 

Kansas sophomore K.J. Adams has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week by a vote of a media panel who covers that league. He leads Kansas shooting 65% from the field. Averages almost 11 points and 4.5 rebounds a game. But since a big 12 play started, he's averaging 16 points a game. 

Jaquan  Walton, second half scoring surge left in Wichita State to a big comeback win over Tulsa on Saturday. And that has earned the junior a spot on this week's American Athletic Conference Honor roll.&nbsp; The 6' 7"guard from Georgia. Averaging 12 points and a team best six rebounds. Shockers have road games this week at Memphis Thursday and SMU on Sunday.

🏈 NFL reveals playoff schedule

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have been in this situation before, ready to embark on a postseason run that the past four years has landed the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game and twice ended in the Super Bowl.

So it's easy to assume that the rest of the Chiefs are a hardened bunch of playoff veterans.

Only the three-win Chicago Bears had more games played by rookies than the Chiefs this season, and only four teams had more first-year players start games than Kansas City.

That includes defensive end George Karlaftis, who started all 17 of his games, and cornerback Trent McDuffie, who started each of the 11 games for which he was healthy.

In fact, each of the Chiefs' 10 draft picks was active for at least one game. Eight of them started at least once.

“I mean, it starts with the organization and the coaches. They’ve set a culture here," explained Mahomes, who at 27 years old is suddenly among the elder statesmen of the franchise.

“We have a lot of veterans on our team, and when you bring in new guys, you just show them by the way you act.”

Mahomes did his part with wide receiver Skyy Moore, inviting him to voluntary offseason workouts at his home in Texas. Moore responded by catching 22 passes for 250 yards while also contributing on special teams.

Defensive end Frank Clark likewise took Karlaftis under his wing in training camp, showing the first-round pick the nuances of the game. Karlaftis had six sacks, trailing only Aidan Hutchinson and James Houston for tops among rookies.

And safety Justin Reid was instrumental in helping along a group of defensive backs that includes four rookie cornerbacks and a rookie safety, all of whom have been on the field at the same time.

Jaylen Watson had a 99-yard pick-6 that helped Kansas City beat the Chargers in Week 2, and McDuffie, Josh Williams, Nazeeh Johnson and Bryan Cook all have had moments.

The fact that they were pressed into service so often means that, at least as far as Reid is concerned, they're no longer rookies at all as they prepare to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday in the divisional round of the playoffs.

“They've had enough experience. They've had enough games under their belt,” Reid said. “They're first-year players but that title — ‘rookie’ — we really want to throw that out the window because of the experience and snaps under their belt.”

The Chiefs had 154 games played by their rookie class this season. Sixty-one times a rookie was in the starting lineup.

“I just went in yesterday again and spoke to the group and just let them know, ‘Hey, you’re at a point in the season that you’re not rookies any longer,’” added Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt.

“The guys have got to understand that it’s a faceless opponent every time. ... Technique-wise, you have to make sure you’re executing, and hopefully throughout the season you continue to get better. And that’s what they’ve done.”

It's not just on defense where rookies have shined either.

Moore was the most-touted offensive draft pick in Kansas City, and he's been helpful despite fumble problems that got him pulled from punt return duties.

But the breakout star has been seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco, who has seemingly spent every game making every team pay for passing on him in those first six rounds.

Despite not starting the first six games, Pacheco has run for 830 yards and five touchdowns, averaging nearly 5 yards per carry. That's the fifth-best yardage total among rookies and his TD total is tied for second among first-year players.

The most impressive thing about Pacheco, and the rest of the Chiefs rookies, might be that they keep getting better.

“I’m not a big rookie wall believer-type deal. It’s professional football. This is your job,” Chiefs running backs coach Greg Lewis said with a shake of his head. “(Pacheco) has been playing football, as all the other rookies have too, their whole life.”

Never with these stakes, though. Mahomes was able to deal with the pressure; he's never lost in the divisional round of the playoffs as an NFL starter.

So have other players that have helped Kansas City reach four straight AFC title games.

Will their latest — and perhaps largest — group of first-year contributors manage to do the same?

“I think you’ve seen as the seasons gone on, those rookies are getting better,” Mahomes said with a smile, "and then the veterans are starting to hit the right moment going into the playoffs.”

(AP) — Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have been in this situation before, ready to embark on a postseason run that the past four years has landed the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game and twice ended in the Super Bowl.So it's easy to assume that the rest of the Chiefs are a hardened bunch of playoff veterans.Turns out they're not.Only the three-win Chicago Bears had more games played by rookies than the Chiefs this season, and only four teams had more first-year players start games than Kansas City.That includes defensive end George Karlaftis, who started all 17 of his games, and cornerback Trent McDuffie, who started each of the 11 games for which he was healthy.In fact, each of the Chiefs' 10 draft picks was active for at least one game. Eight of them started at least once.“I mean, it starts with the organization and the coaches. They’ve set a culture here," explained Mahomes, who at 27 years old is suddenly among the elder statesmen of the franchise.“We have a lot of veterans on our team, and when you bring in new guys, you just show them by the way you act.”Mahomes did his part with wide receiver Skyy Moore, inviting him to voluntary offseason workouts at his home in Texas. Moore responded by catching 22 passes for 250 yards while also contributing on special teams.Defensive end Frank Clark likewise took Karlaftis under his wing in training camp, showing the first-round pick the nuances of the game. Karlaftis had six sacks, trailing only Aidan Hutchinson and James Houston for tops among rookies.And safety Justin Reid was instrumental in helping along a group of defensive backs that includes four rookie cornerbacks and a rookie safety, all of whom have been on the field at the same time.Jaylen Watson had a 99-yard pick-6 that helped Kansas City beat the Chargers in Week 2, and McDuffie, Josh Williams, Nazeeh Johnson and Bryan Cook all have had moments.The fact that they were pressed into service so often means that, at least as far as Reid is concerned, they're no longer rookies at all as they prepare to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday in the divisional round of the playoffs.“They've had enough experience. They've had enough games under their belt,” Reid said. “They're first-year players but that title — ‘rookie’ — we really want to throw that out the window because of the experience and snaps under their belt.”The Chiefs had 154 games played by their rookie class this season. Sixty-one times a rookie was in the starting lineup.“I just went in yesterday again and spoke to the group and just let them know, ‘Hey, you’re at a point in the season that you’re not rookies any longer,’” added Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt.“The guys have got to understand that it’s a faceless opponent every time. ... Technique-wise, you have to make sure you’re executing, and hopefully throughout the season you continue to get better. And that’s what they’ve done.”It's not just on defense where rookies have shined either.Moore was the most-touted offensive draft pick in Kansas City, and he's been helpful despite fumble problems that got him pulled from punt return duties.But the breakout star has been seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco, who has seemingly spent every game making every team pay for passing on him in those first six rounds.Despite not starting the first six games, Pacheco has run for 830 yards and five touchdowns, averaging nearly 5 yards per carry. That's the fifth-best yardage total among rookies and his TD total is tied for second among first-year players.The most impressive thing about Pacheco, and the rest of the Chiefs rookies, might be that they keep getting better.“I’m not a big rookie wall believer-type deal. It’s professional football. This is your job,” Chiefs running backs coach Greg Lewis said with a shake of his head. “(Pacheco) has been playing football, as all the other rookies have too, their whole life.”Never with these stakes, though. Mahomes was able to deal with the pressure; he's never lost in the divisional round of the playoffs as an NFL starter.So have other players that have helped Kansas City reach four straight AFC title games.Will their latest — and perhaps largest — group of first-year contributors manage to do the same?“I think you’ve seen as the seasons gone on, those rookies are getting better,” Mahomes said with a smile, "and then the veterans are starting to hit the right moment going into the playoffs.”
