🏈 No. 17 K-State downed at 8th-ranked TCU

WACO, Texas&nbsp;– Kansas scored the first 20 points of the second half, but the Jayhawks were unable to overcome an early deficit and fell to Baylor, 35-23, on Saturday, October 22, at McLane Stadium.

The Jayhawks scored the first 20 points of the second half and outscored the Bears 20-7 after halftime, but a 28-3 halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome. Baylor scored two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, but Kansas kept the Bears off the scoreboard for the first 27 minutes of the second half. The Jayhawks got within five at 28-23 in the fourth quarter before Baylor scored with 2:37 to play, making it a two-possession game.

The Jayhawks are now 5-3 on the year and 2-3 in Big 12 Conference play heading into the bye week. Baylor improves to 4-3 (2-2 Big 12) for the year.

After getting a three-and-out on its first defensive series, Baylor didn’t waste any time finding the end zone on offense. The Bears went 41 yards on seven plays on their first drive, which was capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Blake Shapen to Monaray Baldwin.

The Jayhawks then fumbled on their first play after the touchdown and the Bears took over at the 25-yard line, already leading 7-0. Baylor scored on its second play of the drive to go up 14-0.

Kansas got on the scoreboard on its next drive, however. The Jayhawks drove 62 yards on 12 plays and placekicker Jacob Borcila finished off the drive with a 30-yard field goal to close the gap to 14-3.

However, Baylor scored the next two touchdowns of the half to go up 28-3. The Bears were going in to score again right before the half, but linebacker Craig Young picked off Baylor quarterback Blake Shapen to stop the threat and get the game to halftime.

In the third quarter, the Jayhawks came alive, led by their defense. Defensive end Jereme Robinson sacked Shapen, and forced a fumble, which he recovered. Robinson returned it 49 yards to the Baylor 9-yard line. Three plays later, on third-and-goal from the 2-yard line, Devin Neal scored from two yards out to make it 28-10.

On the next drive, the Kansas defense forced Baylor’s first punt of the game after a seven-play, 24-yard drive.

Baylor downed the ball at the 5-yard line, where the Jayhawk offense went to work. Led by quarterback Jason Bean, Kansas drove 95 yards on 11 plays and capped it with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Skinner. The Jayhawks went for two, but couldn’t convert, cutting the lead to 28-16 with 14:33 to play in the fourth quarter.

Baylor drove into the red zone on its next drive, but the Bears were turned away on fourth down as KU took over on downs at its own 7-yard line. Bean led another long drive, this time needing eight plays to cover 93 yards, capping the drive with a four-yard touchdown run of his own. Following the extra point, the Jayhawks trailed 38-23 with 6:29 to play.

Kansas was unable to get a stop on Baylor’s next drive, as the Bears drove 69 yards in seven plays to extend the lead to 35-23 on a four-yard touchdown run with 2:37 to play. GARDEN CITY - The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team entered the final week of the regular season with a tough four-set loss to Garden City on Saturday at Conestoga Arena.

The 20th-ranked Blue Dragons had a two-match win streak snapped as Garden City defeated Hutchinson 24-26, 26-24, 22-25, 20-25, Hutchinson’s first loss to Garden City since 2020.

The Blue Dragons are now 24-10 overall, 11-3 in the Jayhawk West. The Dragons fell to third place in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson and Garden City split the 2022 season series.

Freshman Taniya Golden led the Blue Dragons with 19 kills. Sophomore Baylee Miller added 11 kills. Sophomore setter Andrea Serrano had 33 set assists. Freshman Giovanna Ravenhani had 13 assists.

Sophomore libero Morgan Harvey led the Dragon back line with 20 digs. Golden had her second double-double of the season with 15 digs. Freshman Alejandra Briseno also had 15 digs.

Freshman Anna Dean had three service aces and Golden added two aces.

Sophomore Blondie Penaflor had three solo blocks and two block assists. Dean had five block assists.

1st set: After a 2-0 start, the Blue Dragons and Broncbusters answered each other until Golden’s kill triggered a 3-0 run and forced a Garden City timeout. The Blue Dragons led 10-7. Penaflor stopped a short Garden City run with a kill to make it 15-10. On the ensuing serve, Golden served up an ace to give Hutchinson a 16-10 lead, forcing another Broncbuster timeout. Following a timeout by the Blue Dragons on set point leading 24-22, the Broncbusters continued their run and scored five unanswered to steal the opening set 26-24.

2nd set: After Garden City started off the second set leading 5-0, Golden put down a kill to put the Blue Dragons on the board. Garden City led 13-5, the largest lead of the match. Down 14-7, Dean served an ace to spark the Dragons. After a kill by Garden City, Miller terminated and Serrano served an ace to cut the Garden City lead to 15-11. Dragons fall 2-0 at Barton

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Any team would have been content with a 27-7 halftime lead at Garden City — not the No. 1 Dragons.&nbsp;

Garden City (receiving votes in the Top 15 poll) entered the game 3-4 overall, but 3-1 in conference play. The Broncbusters first three losses of the season came when head coach Tom Minnick could not physically coach his team because of health issues. Upon his return, Garden City rolled to three straight wins before dropping a three-point decision against then-No. 9 Snow.

Garden City's four losses all came to nationally-ranked teams (Butler, Iowa Central, Iowa Western and Snow).

Hutchinson Community College (7-0, 4-0) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after taking just eight plays to cover 72 yards in 4 minutes and 15 seconds.&nbsp;

Dylan Laible finished the drive by finding Marcello Bussey for a 17-yard score. The TD pass was one of three for Laible on the day. For the second-straight game, his day ended early.&nbsp;

Laible racked up three touchdown passes for 198 yards on 15 of 26 throwing. Colin Shields entered with 1:39 left in the third quarter to finish Dragon quarterback duties.&nbsp;

The Dragons put up 27 unanswered points before one mistake led to another late in the first half.&nbsp;

Hutchinson jumped offside on a 4th-and-4 punt in the closing moments of the second quarter. On the next play, quarterback Gabe Friend hit wide receiver Martiel Singleton for a 70-yard scamper. Singleton was forced out at the two, but the Broncbusters would score two plays later on a Travis Dixon one-yard burst.&nbsp;

Coach Drew Dallas said those plays cost his team some momentum headed into the locker room.&nbsp;

"(I'm) proud of how they came out in the second half," Dallas said. "Especially (knowing) how they ended that first half. They played great the second half."

Hutchinson scored the game's first 27 points, then went on a 38-point run to close the game.&nbsp;

The first 27 points came from Bussey, Laible, Malik Benson and kicker Cole Segraves.&nbsp;

Laible sneaked in from one-yard away in the first quarter for only his second rushing touchdown in his career.&nbsp;

Segraves hit two field goals (21 and 32) before Benson took a 40-yard reception to pay dirt.&nbsp;

The second-half run came compliments of some defensive points and interceptions.&nbsp;

Hutchinson picked off Garden City five times (three different quarterbacks), two of those interceptions were house calls.&nbsp;

The five interceptions and two pick-sixes tied team records for one game.&nbsp;

Jalik Thomas was the first Dragon defender on the board when his second INT went 38 yards to the end zone.&nbsp;

Not to be outdone, Ja'Maric Morris took his second interception of the day 75 yards to the house.&nbsp;

Hutchinson pushed Garden City back in the run game. The Broncbusters finished with negative three yards on the ground.&nbsp;

"Allowing negative yards rushing is something special," Dallas said.&nbsp;

The 70-yard reception Hutchinson gave up just before the half accounted for all but 20 of Garden City's first-half yards.&nbsp;

In all, the Broncbusters managed 176 yards on 68 plays (2.6 yards per play). Garden City converted just two times on 14 third-down tries.&nbsp;

Despite the success, Dallas knows his team can improve.

"We'll find something to critique, obviously to get better," Dallas said. He pointed out silly pre-snap penalties and settling for Red Zone field goals as starting points.&nbsp;

The Dragons added scores from Treymon Echols and Dylan Kedzior in the second half.&nbsp;

Echols scored his first two touchdowns of the season in the second half. His first TD came in the third quarter on a 29-yard Laible pass. His second came from Shields in the fourth quarter after his defender fell down. Echols turned the corner and ran the sideline for 64 yards.&nbsp;

Kedzior used a 36-yard run in the third quarter to run his average yards per carry up to 9.2. He finished the day at 8.6 ypc on 17 touches (146 yards).

Cole Segraves was the Special Teams Player of the Week in the KJCCC after his 4-for-4 performance in Dodge City two weeks ago. Segraves continued to be accurate by hitting three of his four attempts (Made: 21, 32 and 38. Missed: 41.)

Hutchinson put up 414 yards of offense. The Dragons were 8 of 17 on third down.&nbsp;

The final regular-season match of the 2022 women's soccer team as the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons within one win of a Jayhawk Conference championship.

The No. 17-ranked Blue Dragons (13-2, 10-2 Jayhawk West) travel to meet No. 18 Barton (13-3, 9-2) in a 1 p.m. kickoff from the Cougar Soccer Field on the campus of Barton Community College. The game will be streamed live by the Cougar Sports Network.

Hutchinson takes a three-point lead into Saturday's second matchup with the Cougars. Hutchinson is 10-2 (30 points) in league play. Barton is 9-2 (27 points) in the Jayhawk West. Barton has Hutchinson and Johnson County remaining on its league schedule.

The Blue Dragons defeated Barton 2-0 in the first meeting of the season on October 5 at the Salthawk Sports Complex. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/lowe_hadlie_mqp8">Hadlie Lowe</a>&nbsp;scored a pair of goals and sophomore goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2022-23/bios/quarles_madison_h89v">Madison Quarles</a>&nbsp;shut out the second-highest scoring team in the nation on nine saves.

Barton out-shot the Blue Dragons 28-3 in the first meeting of the season.

The Blue Dragons have reeled off four-straight wins, including a 3-1 victory over Cowley on Wednesday in Hutchinson. Lowe had her sixth-career hat trick in the victory.

The Cougars are 2-1 since the first Hutchinson matchup with wins over Dodge City and Cowley. Barton lost 1-0 to No. 5 Butler last Saturday in El Dorado.

The Blue Dragons are 5-2 in true road games last season. Barton is 6-0 at home this season.

Hutchinson is in search of its sixth Jayhawk Conference championship and first since 2016.

⚽️ Dragons look to clinch West Crown at Barton on Saturday

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team will host 11 other teams in the Papa John's Blue Dragon Jamboree on Sunday.

Action starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Admission is $10 per person. Doors open at 8 a.m. All fans will enter through the South Arena Entrance.

Games will be played at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., Noon and 1:30 p.m. Games will be played in each time slot on the main Arena court, Court 1 and Court 3. Those courts are located in the north Sports Arena addition.

Each of the 12 teams will play two games in the Jamboree.

The Blue Dragons will play Northern Oklahoma-Enid at 9 a.m. on the main court and Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa on Court 3 at 1:30 p.m.

Barton, Coffeyville, Garden City, Cowley, Pratt and Labette are Jayhawk Conference teams participating. NOC-Enid, NOC-Tonkawa and NEO, Western Nebraska and Sunrise Christian are the other schools that make up the 12-team field.

🏀 Papa John's Blue Dragon Jamboree set for Sunday

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College Football team returns to action Saturday from its second bye week of the season and travels to meet the Garden City Broncbusters in a big Jayhawk Conference matchup.

The Blue Dragons (6-0) and the Broncbusters (3-4) kick off at 1 p.m. at Broncbuster Stadium in Garden City.

The last four meetings between Hutchinson and Garden City have had conference and national implications. Two seasons ago, the Blue Dragons won 23-7 on the way to the 2020-21 national championship.

Last season, the Blue Dragons defeated the Busters 24-16 in the regular season and 49-19 in the KJCCC Playoff Championship game last season in Wichita.

Hutchinson is the lone-remaining unbeaten team in the Jayhawk Conference with a 3-0 record, but Garden City and Butler are right on the Blue Dragons' tail at 3-1.

Two weeks ago, the Blue Dragons went on the road and defeated Dodge City 49-14 at Memorial Stadium. Sophomore quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/laible_dylan_elo2">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;threw for 217 yards and became the Blue Dragons' career passing leader with 4,921 yards. Sophomore receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/benson_malik_obrm">Malik Benson</a>&nbsp;- who had seven catches for 136 yards - moved into No. 2 on the career receiving yards list with 1,756 yards. Kicker&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/segraves_cole_2w5s">Cole Segraves</a>&nbsp;went 4 of 4 on field goals and booted a career-long 46 yards to lead the Blue Dragon special teams.

The victory over Dodge City was Hutchinson's 12th-straight win, the third-longest winning streak in program history.

Garden City got off to an 0-3 start this season with losses to Butler, Iowa Central and Iowa Western, but has won 3 of 4 games since. Last week, the Busters played at No. 6 Snow College and dropped a 23-20 decision. Garden City quarterback Ty Perry threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite the loss, the Busters have moved back into the receiving votes section of the NJCAA Division I National Rankings for the first time in five polls. Garden City started the season ranked No. 7 in the preseason rankings, but fell out of the poll after the 0-3 start.

After Saturday's road contest, the Blue Dragons will have two-straight games at Gowans Stadium with Highland next Saturday and Independence on November 5.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber homered and Jean Segura hit a two-run single to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres for a 2-1 lead in the National League Championship Series. Segura had made an error earlier in the game that cost the Phillies a run and also got picked off first base. Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins committed a two-base error that led to an unearned run for the Padres. But starter Ranger Suarez survived shoddy fielding to pitch five sharp inning and pick up the win.

Profar loses his cool, Padres lose to Phils in NLCS Game 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jurickson Profar lost his cool just before the San Diego Padres lost the game. With a runner on first and no outs in the ninth inning in Game 3 of the NL Championship Series, Profar thought he checked his swing on a 3-2 pitch from Phillies reliever Seranthony Domínguez. But Profar was ruled to have swung by third-base umpire Todd Tichenor. Profar slammed his helmet, yelled an expletive at Tichenor and then kicked his helmet before being ejected by plate umpire Ted Barrett. Instead of a walk that would have put runners on first and second with no outs, it was an important first out for Domínguez, who retired the next two batters to complete a 4-2 win and give Philadelphia a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven matchup.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tom Brady says retirement isn't in his future, so let the 2023 speculation begin. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Damian Lillard scored 41 points and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Phoenix Suns 113-111 in overtime Friday night for their second straight victory to open the season. Anfernee Simons made a layup with 7.2 seconds left in overtime and finished with 16 points. Jusuf Nurkic had 20 points and 17 rebounds. Devin Booker led Phoenix with 33 points. Lillard's free throws with 33.9 seconds left tied it at 111. Booker missed a short jumper before Simons' layup put Portland in front. Nurkic fouled Deandre Ayton on the other end, but Ayton missed the first, then missed the second on purpose for a failed try at a tying basket.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutchinson Salthawks defense was outstanding holding Andover to only 141 total offensive yards on 48 plays and special teams used a kick return by Noah Khokhar as the senior running back returned the 2nd half kickoff 87 yards to bust the tight game open and give Hutch (6-2) a 21-6 lead to start the 3rd quarter of play.

Khokhar rushed for only 38 yards on 9 carries but caught 5 passes for 48 yards and a touchdown to lead Hutch in all purpose yards.

Andover's lone score came on a pass from sophomore Tanner Woolston to a wide open BJ Redic for 32 yards right before half time to tighten the game to only a 1 touchdown lead at the half with Hutch on top 14-6.

Junior Jax Heneha had two interceptions with one returned from the end zone to the Hutchinson 37 yard line. That set up a nine play 63 yard scoring drive with junior Devon Spiller taking it in from 2 yards out to give the Salthawks the lead 28-6 for the final scoring play of the game.

It was senior night as seniors were honored and escorted on the field by their respective parent or parents prior to the game.

WICHITA, Kan. —Wichita State University Baseball Head Coach Eric Wedge has stepped away from head coaching duties to focus on personal health related matters. Assistant Athletic Director for Baseball Operations and Player Development Loren Hibbs will assume head coaching responsibilities in Wedge’s absence.

Before joining the Shockers in 2019, Hibbs led the 49ers at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for 27 seasons.

“I have absolute confidence in Coach Hibbs and our coaching staff to lead our amazing group of student-athletes who have worked hard through a successful fall, culminating in the final Fall World Series games this week. We have not made any decisions about the long-term leadership of our program at this time,” athletic director Kevin Saal said in a statement.

Saal said the thoughts of those in the athletic department were with Wedge as he takes time in the offseason to address health matters. Saal said they would have no further comment on Wedge’s leave at the time.

Alana Gee says he took enough serious blows to the head to develop a degenerative brain disease that led to his death at 49. The NCAA says it had nothing to do with Gee's death and his mental decline was from years of hard drinking. The case could be the first of its kind to go to a jury.

The Jayhawks are 5-2 on the year and 2-2 in Big 12 play following a high-scoring, 52-42, defeat at Oklahoma on October 15.
