🏀 MBB: Hot shooting propels K-State past Montana State at NCAAs

WICHITA — The leading scorer this past season on the Wichita State men’s basketball team has entered the transfer portal. 

Jaykwon Walton became the fourth Shocker and third scholarship player on the roster to officially submit the paperwork to enter the portal, which doesn’t necessarily end his career at WSU but does allow him to explore his options. 

Verbal Commits was the first to report Walton had entered the portal. 

Walton, who has one year of eligibility left, joins starting center Kenny Pohto, who has two years left, and reserve point guard Shammah Scott, who has two years left, as scholarship players who have entered the transfer portal since last Saturday’s firing of head coach Isaac Brown. 

WSU is still in the process of finding a replacement.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/williams_mya_wx3b">Mya Williams</a>&nbsp;became the 18th two-time first-team all-conference player in Hutchinson Community College women's basketball history and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2022-23/bios/duffy_monae_4kqq">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;put herself in position to be the 19th next season as both were named to the 2023 All-Jayhawk Conference/All-Region VI first team on Thursday.

Williams and Duffy led the 2023 Blue Dragons to a 23-8 season and a fourth-place finish in the Jayhawk Conference. The Dragons were ousted in the Region VI Tournament in the quarterfinals by Coffeyville.

Williams closed out a stellar Blue Dragon career as the program's second all-time leading scorer with 1,163 points.

This season, the sophomore guard from Waxahachie, Texas, was the Blue Dragons' top scorer and fifth-leading scorer in the Jayhawk Conference at 16.6 points per game. She shot 40.7 percent overall and 33.0 percent from 3-point range (69 of 209). Her 85.7 percent mark from the free-throw line was third-highest in the KJCCC this season.

Williams scored in double figures in 28 of 31 games played this season, reaching the 20-point plateau in 13 games.

Williams had a season high of 28 points against Independence on January 14. She had four or more 3-pointers in five games.

For her Blue Dragon career, Williams set a Blue Dragon career scoring average record of 17.6 points per game. Her 375 made field goals rank sixth most in team history. Her 151 3-pointers are sixth most, her 262 free throws are fourth most and her 83.4 percent career efficiency mark at the free-throw line ranks eighth-best in team history.

Last season, Williams was a first-team All-American, KJCCC co-MVP, KJCCC Freshman of the Year and first-team all-league/all-region selection. Williams set the Blue Dragon freshman scoring record with 648 points.

Duffy, a 6-foot freshman forward from Lafayette, Louisiana, became the 21st Blue Dragon freshman to surpass the 400-point mark in Blue Dragon history, scoring 403 points.

Duffy averaged 13.0 points and was the team's top rebounder at 8.8 boards per game. She was the 12th-leading scorer and fourth-leading rebounder in the Jayhawk Conference this season. Shooting 48.6 percent from the field, Duffy ranked eighth in the KJCCC in field-goal percentage.

Starting with the first game back from the holiday break, Duffy's game began to surge, averaging 15.6 points and 9.4 rebounds over the Blue Dragons' final 16 games. She shot 53.7 percent over that span of games.

Duffy's 273 total rebounds rank eighth on the Hutchinson freshman list.

With 25 points and 20 rebounds against Northwest Tech on February 18, Duffy became just the second Blue Dragon to have a 20-point/20-rebound performance in single-game history.

Duffy also became the first Blue Dragon ever to have two 20-rebound games in a career. Duffy had 21 rebounds against Independence on Nov, 16 at the Sports Arena, the second most rebounds in single-game history.

MANHATTAN, Kansas –&nbsp;With a combined 55 points in the second and third quarters, K-State cruised to a 90-56 win over Wichita State in the first round of the 2023 Postseason WNIT at Bramlage Coliseum on Thursday night. The 90 points and the 34-point margin of victory set school records for a Postseason WNIT game.&nbsp; K-State (18-16) held a 19-12 lead after the first quarter, but outscored Wichita State (18-15) 55-23 over the next two quarters to build a 47-point advantage with five minutes remaining. The 47-point lead was the highest for the Wildcats this season. The Wildcats poured in a season-high 31 points in the third quarter, surpassing the previous mark of 30 against Clemson on November 24. During the third frame, K-State shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the field including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. We obviously did some really good things I liked. I liked our attitude coming out of the gates. I thought we started defensively. I can tell early that our group was locked into the little things that we had talked about. Pace got to where we wanted it and then I thought it was really just about them making the right reads and staying active and staying on the attack, which for the most part they did. " On whether today was a statement win… "Well I think it's a good sign. When you come out of the 20 game gauntlet that we face in the Big 12, you're just kind of excited to see a different jersey, even coaching it gets you excited because you don't know the team, you walk out there and you're kind of curious about the opponent. I was curious to see. We knew their 4s and 5s had really scored at a high level. They're coming off of knocking off a number one seed in South Florida, who has gotten many good wins over the course of the season. So I was curious and excited to play somebody that we hadn't seen before." On the defensive scheme… "Yeah I think we only played a couple possessions of zone the whole game on some out of bounds stuff. But yeah, I thought we were really good. I thought we we're getting the help to the post for the most part. The points that Curtessia [Dean] got were hard points. I don't think it was us not having awareness, I think she just hit some really tough shots, so give her credit. Yeah, like I said, I felt like we had just had a good focus about us and we had a good pace. You know, it was good to see. " On the assist to field goal ratio… "It was good, yeah I thought it was good. I thought we had some good skip passes that led to shots. We had some good ball movement, led to shots. We turned down some good shots to get great shots. That's what we've been preaching and I felt like we did that for the most part." We didn't play very well today and it was just an old-fashioned butt kickin' and they shot the ball very well. Going into today's game we'd prepared all week about them being shooters and wanting to shoot the three but we didn't defend it well, they hit 11 threes and probably one of our poorer performances on the defensive end. It's been a long time since we've given up 90 points, that's a lot of points. So tough day on the offense, the ball wasn't going in for us. We had one in double figures, Curtessia Dean, but you know one thing you should be able to count on is your defense night in and night out. Yeah, so really I owe it all to my teammates to keep their players off the boards. " On playing a non Big 12 school… "I was pretty excited coming in just because we have been playing some teams repetitively, so I was excited to see someone that we haven't seen. "I feel good today, especially like going off the first drive that I had to the right hand. It's always like a little nerve racking that you might get hit, but like once I think I saw the ball go through the basket it really upped my confidence and I just continued to attack the basket and shoot open shots. So yeah, I feel good." On the team's motivation… "We were super motivated coming in. We knew what we had to do and I think it just helped that everyone was on the same page. Everyone was plugging in their spots. Everyone ran the floor and was ready to attack the basket. But I think throughout the game we had a good balance between attacking the basket and shooting threes. Whereas like Coach Mittie tells us all the time that sometimes we maybe favor the three a little bit more, but I think we had a good balance today and that's why we were successful. <a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/serena-sundell/8612">Serena Sundell</a>, Sophomore Guard On how she thought the offense performed… "I think just playing together today, moving the ball well, and when we get paint touches, which when we make that our main focus people are going to be wide open for the three. It's a drill we work on everyday in practice is getting down in there and kicking out to our teammate. So yeah, I think we were just on the same page trying to get the the paint but also finding our shooters " On what was going well in the second and third quarter… "Yeah, we were just flowing. I think we had the game at a pace that we liked. Our defense felt good. We were all kind of locked in. We had a good amount of time, I think, to prepare for this game. So just strategy wise, we were all locked in on plugging and keeping the ball out in the middle. So when your defense is going well and then you can get out and run then it's pretty fun basketball and I feel like we're pretty hard to stop." Hutchinson Community College redshirt freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchinson.prestosports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/franklin_aaron_5xfv">Aaron Franklin</a>&nbsp;was named the Jayhawk Conference Freshman of the Year on Thursday as well as being named to the first-team All-Jayhawk Conference and All-Region VI teams.

Franklin, a 6-foot-5 freshman from Kansas City, Missouri, is the first Blue Dragon to be named Freshman of the Year since Josh Baker in 2020. His inclusion on the first team means the Blue Dragons have had a first-team All-KJCCC selection for the eighth-straight season.

Franklin is the second-straight Blue Dragon to lead the Jayhawk Conference in scoring. Last season Angelo Stuart was the KJCCC's leading scorer.

Franklin led the Blue Dragons and the KJCCC in scoring at 22.0 points per game. That mark ranked 10th in the NJCAA in 2022-23.

Franklin became just the 12th Blue Dragon in program history to surpass the 700-point mark of the season with 703 points. His 80 3-point field goals were the third most in program single-game history.

Franklin shot 49.3 percent overall, hitting 32.8 percent from 3-point range and 62.8 percent from the free-throw line. Franklin was the Blue Dragons' leading rebounder and sixth-leading rebounder in the KJCCC with 8.2 boards per game.

Franklin posted 10 double-doubles this season and scored in double figures in all 32 games played. Franklin had 19 games of 20 or more points and five games with 30 or more points, including a career-high 38 points against Pratt on January 25.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Ryan Redington has won the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which his grandfather helped co-found. Redington’s dog team pulled him down Nome’s main street shortly after noon on Tuesday, sliding him under the iconic burled arch finish line. The 40-year-old Redington will pocket about $50,000 for the win. Redington’s grandfather, Joe Redington Sr., helped start the Iditarod, which had its first race in 1973. Ryan Redington, who is Inupiat, becomes the sixth Alaska Native musher to win the world’s most famous sled dog race. This is first Iditarod victory, but he won the Junior Iditarod in both 1999 and 2000.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Women’s Basketball will host Western Kentucky Friday, March 17 in the first round of the Postseason WNIT. Tournament officials announced the bracket and first-round matchups for the 25th WNIT Monday.

Kansas will compete in the postseason for the second-straight season after reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2022. This is the 25th postseason appearance for the Jayhawks, which includes 14 NCAA Tournaments and six invitations to the current format of the WNIT, which began in 1998. Kansas had previously played in the NWIT twice (1978 and 1991) when it was an eight-team tournament and made AIAW postseason appearances in 1979, 1980 and 1981.

The Jayhawks are 9-5 all-time in the WNIT, an event KU previously played in following the 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons. Kansas has won at least one game in the WNIT in each season, including a run to the championship game in 2009. The Jayhawks hosted four games at Allen Fieldhouse that postseason, including the title game, which was played in front of a Kansas and Big 12 Conference record-setting crowd of 16,113 fans.

Three Jayhawks earned a spot on the 2022-23 All-Big 12 Women’s Basketball team, which was announced last week. Taiyanna Jackson was a unanimous selection to both the All-Big 12 First Team and the Big 12 All-Defensive Team, while Zakiyah Franklin was named to the All-Big 12 First Team and Holly Kersgieter received honorable mention.

The Jayhawks are No. 37 in the NCAA’s NET Rankings, which are based off game results, winning percentage and adjusted win percentage. Kansas is the fourth-highest ranked Big 12 team in the NET rankings.

Western Kentucky is 19-13 on the year and finished second in Conference USA with a 14-6 league record, before advancing to the CUSA Championship game where they fell 82-70 to Middle Tennessee State. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jawaan Taylor has agreed to an $80 million, four-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs to replace Orlando Brown Jr. as the blindside protector for Patrick Mahomes, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Monday because the contract cannot become official until Wednesday, when the NFL's new year officially starts and free agents can begin signing contracts.

The 25-year-old Taylor started all 66 games he's played in since entering the league as a second-round pick of the Jaguars in the 2019 draft. While he primarily held down the right side of the line in Jacksonville, the expectation is that — much as Brown did when he arrived from Baltimore — Taylor will switch to the left side in Kansas City.

The Chiefs used the franchise tag on Brown a year ago, when they could not agree to a long-term deal with his new representative. He wound up playing the season for $16.7 million under terms of the tag, helping the Chiefs beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl, and the sides again worked on a long-term deal.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach expressed some optimism in a contract at the NFL scouting combine.

Yet it quickly became evident that the sides were still far from a middle ground, and the price tag to put Brown on the franchise tag for a second year would have cost about $20 million. So the Chiefs, who are expected to lose right tackle Andrew Wylie in free agency, opted to move quickly on Taylor to fill the left tackle spot.

He gave up a league-leading 40 sacks from 2019 to 2021, but he experienced a breakout year protecting Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville last season. He allowed only six sacks and had one of the league's lowest pressure rates among tackles.

The Chiefs still would still have a hole at right tackle, but Lucas Niang could fill that role after dealing with a litany of injuries, and Veach has been successful in finding quailty offensive linemen in the NFL draft.

That includes center Creed Humphy and right guard Trey Smith, both of them draft picks two years ago, who along with left guard Joe Thuney have formed one of the most durable and successful interior lines in the league.

The Chiefs could be busy in free agency as they retool for a Super Bowl defense.

They're poised to lose wide receiers JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman and Justin Watson, though there is mutual interest in bringing Smith-Schuster back after a successful season in Kansas City. The Chiefs also must find a replacement for veteran defensive end Frank Clark, whom they released to create some salary cap relief, and safety Juan Thornhill, who may have played himself into a longer-term deal than the Chiefs are willing to offer.

By the next Olympics, 28 of the 40 jumpers were using Fosbury’s technique. Today, it is by far the most-used technique for elite high jumpers across the globe.

A completed trade between the Jets and Packers ending Rodgers’ 18-year run in Green Bay would mirror the trade that once ended Brett Favre’s career with the franchise in 2008.

K-State is making its 39th postseason appearance, which includes 32 in the NCAA Tournament and seven in the Postseason NIT. The Wildcats advance to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in the last 16 seasons, including the first time since 2019. The program has now advanced to the postseason 12 times in the last 17 seasons (10 trips to NCAA Tournament and two to the NIT). The 32 overall bids rank 22nd nationally, including fourth among Big 12 schools (Kansas [51], Texas [37] and Oklahoma [33]). Kansas is the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament's West Region&nbsp;and will have coach Bill Self back on the sideline.

Self missed the Big 12 Tournament after undergoing a heart procedure, but the school announced Sunday&nbsp;he will return to lead the third-ranked Jayhawks against Howard in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday.

Kansas (27-7) won its first two games at the Big 12 Tournament without Self before losing 76-56 to NO. 7 Texas&nbsp;in the title game.

The Jayhawks appeared as though they would slip to a No. 2 seed when top-ranked Houston got the top spot in the Midwest, but the NCAA selection committee still made them the No. 1 in a West Region that ends in Las Vegas on March 23-25.

Kansas faces a difficult road in its bid to become college basketball's first repeat champion since Florida in 2006-07.

The stacked West Region includes No. 2 UCLA, No. 9 Gonzaga, No. 11 UConn, No. 16 Saint Mary's and No. 22 TCU.

Get by Howard, which is in its first NCAA Tournament since 1992, and the Jayhawks will get a stiff test in the second round against Arkansas or Illinois.
