DODGE CITY, Kan.-On an afternoon when their leading scorer was 0 for 5 in the first half yet the Salthawks still had a 27 to 16 lead. &nbsp;You knew that someone else had to stop up and boy did Dauntay and Terrell King ever do that! Dauntay had 12 points at halftime and Terrell had 7 to account for 19 of the 27 points the Salthawks had scored, building a 12-10 lead to go on a 10-3 run to build that double-digit lead at the half. Dauntay King shot 3 for 3 from 3pt land. Hutch was able to pull away from Junction City and win the TOC semi-final game 56-29.

In the 3rd quarter, Wade Meyer got going by scoring 7 of his 11 points including hitting 3 for 3 from the foul line as Hutchinson outscored the Blue Jays 17 to 9, plus held Junction City to only 4 points in the 4th stanza.

Hutchinson's Terrell King finished with 12 points. The same amount for Dauntay King, while Meyers added 11 to the total.

Hutchinson, now 10-0 on the season find themselves in the TOC championship for the first time since 2002. &nbsp;Needless to say, none of these Salthawks were even alive in 2002.

The Salthawks will match up with Maize South for the 2nd time this season as the Mavericks were able to get by Derby 73-63 in the late semi-final on Friday night.

This will be the 2nd match up with Maize South for the Salthawks as Hutch rallied back in the 4th quarter in the first meeting between these two clubs to win 64-55 on January 6th.

Derby and Junction City will match up in the 3rd place game at 3pm on Saturday, while the Championship game will tip at 5pm.

Royals announce deals with international free agents

KANSAS CITY — Mark Feinsand of MLB.com is reporting that the Kansas City Royals are acquiring hard throwing reliever Aroldis Chapman.

If Chapman returns to form, the Royals could end up with a valuable trading chip.

Chapman struggled last year to stay healthy with the Yankees.

Royals to add Chapman to bullpen

Barely took an hour to play. As the Salt Hawks moved to nine&nbsp;and zero, Terrell King led the way with 10. Wade Meyer 7. A plethora of players got into the lineup for that game. Elsewhere Berean Academy one over Fairfield 43-42 Inman beat Central Christian 61-14 Salina Central over Butler 66-43 and Kingman a winner over Trinity Catholic 64-63 in overtime. 

Just one area girl's team playing yesterday. Buhler girls get pounded by Salina Central 52-20.

DeAndre Williams 29 points as he helped Memphis beat Wichita State 88-78. In Memphis, James Rojas, the former Blue Dragon, led the Shockers, who now dropped to 9 and 9, finish with 19 points. Wichita State got 15 from Jaquan Walton. Craig Porter Jr had 11 points and 6 assists more shockers play Sunday on the road at SMU. 

Kansas Jalen Wilson&nbsp;and Grady Dick have been named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy mid-season watch list. The U.S. Basketball Writers of America announcing yesterday Kansas, one of six schools with multiple players on the 50 listed.

Former&nbsp;Maize High quarterback and future K-State Wildcat Avery Johnson has announced his first major NIL deal. Johnson revealed that he has an agreement with Robbins Motor Company, which is a car dealership with locations in Manhattan, Junction City, Topeka, the Flint Hills and surrounding areas in central Kansas. Johnson has a NIL valuation of 237,000, which is the 27th best valuation among high school football players in the 2023 class. 

Seven time&nbsp;All-Star Aroldis Chapman headed to the Royals. MLB.com reports that Chapman and the Royals agreed to terms on a one year $3.75 million contract. Left handed reliever was foreign for nine saves in ERA a 4.46 in 43 relief appearances last year, with New York.

 Royals coming off a 97 lost season when search announcing Ramone Borrego will return for his third season as a manager this spring as he led the club to a best record in the Texas League in 2021 and 2022.&nbsp;

Williams added 15 rebounds and three steals for the Tigers (14-5, 4-2 American Athletic Conference). Kendric Davis scored 20 points while shooting 6 for 10 (4 for 5 from 3-point range) and 4 of 4 from the free throw line, and added five assists. Keonte Kennedy shot 6 for 10, including 4 for 6 from beyond the arc to finish with 16 points.

DODGE CITY, Kan.-The Hutchinson Salthawks boy's basketball team gave up a 3 point basketball to Newton's Ezra Entz to trail the Railers early, but that lead didn't last long as the # 1 tourney seeded Salthawks rolled to a 53 to 25 win in the opening round game of the 80th Dodge City Tournament of Champions.

The Salthawks (9-0) started the 2nd quarter with their reserves getting most of the action after building a 33 to 14 halftime lead produced by a 18-2 run midway through the quarter.

Hutch was led by sophomore Terrell King with 10 points and senior forward Wade Meyer's 7 points. Sharp shooter Garrett Robertson scored 6 points. The Salthawk bench contributed 24 points in the win. Hutch shot 54.3% for the game while holding the Railer's to a 30.3% clip.

The Newton Railers (1-9) were led by Camden Carr who had 9 points off 3 for 9 shooting from outside the arch.

Hutchinson will now face the Junction City Blue Jays who pulled away from Shawnee Mission South in the 2nd half to win 50 to 35 after only having a 18 to 17 point lead at halftime.

Junction City is 8-3 on the season and has a strong front line that score 31 of the 50 Blue Jays points on Thursday afternoon.

The Blue Dragon men rebounded from Saturday's loss in a big way, getting a one 115 to 94 conference victory over Independence last night. Dragons improved to 13 and 6 overall 7 and 6 in Jayhawk conference play. The Dragons hit 17 three pointers. Aaron Franklin led the Dragons with 20.&nbsp; Aaron Potter matched a season high with 15. Jaden Garrison 15. KB Bundy had 12. Congrats to Tommy Dawson and the Hutchinson men. A big win in Independence last night. 

HutchCC women's basketball team extended their winning streak to five and get a convincing win over Independence last night as sophomore Mia Williams put together her second straight 28 point performance. And Hutchinson wins 82-58. They had a 29 point halftime lead. Dragons improved to 15 and 4. The ladies are 9 and 4 in Jayhawk conference play. Freshman Monet Duffy had her third straight double double with 14 points 11 boards. Freshman Jurnee Armstead had 14.

Andy Reid said that defensive end Frank Clark is progressing well, as is wide receiver Sky Moore, who could be seen practicing. Should be good to go. Reid also confirmed that running back Clyde Edwards-helaire and tight end Jodie Fortson would also take the field this week, meaning the Chiefs have officially designated  them for return from injured reserve. The Chiefs will play host Jacksonville Saturday at 3:30. Our pre-game will start here at 2 pm on BW Radio Sports. 

Also  announced yesterday, Field at Arrowhead saying that rapper Lil Jon will be performing at halftime of the AFC divisional playoff game between the Jags and the Chiefs. Another

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks outscored West Virginia 57-24 in the second half to turn a 14-point halftime deficit into a 77-58 victory over the Mountaineers on Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks, now 13-4 (3-3 Big 12) on the year, trailed 40-28 with 6:04 to play in the third quarter following a technical foul against the Kansas bench. KU scored the next 15 points to take its first lead of the game 43-40. The Jayhawks would extend the lead to 61-48 thanks to a 33-6 run and finished the game outscoring WVU 49-16 over the final 16 minutes.

"I think a coach appreciates when a team responds after a technical. It’s usually a way for the players to know that I have their back and when they come back and play that hard, I think it is reciprocated."

The 14-point margin is the sixth-largest halftime deficit overcome in school history and the largest since KU came from 17 points down to defeat Texas Tech, 68-66, on January 21, 2015.

Kansas had four players in double figures, led by Wyvette Mayberry and Zakiyah Franklin with 19 points apiece, while Holly Kersgieter had 16. Taiyanna Jackson recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds, while adding three blocked shots.

The first quarter was back and forth, with West Virginia leading 17-15 after one. The Jayhawks struggled to get going in the second quarter, turning the ball over nine times, and shooting only 18.2% from the floor while scoring a season-low five points in the quarter to go into the break trailing 34-20.

WVU’s margin remained 14 at 42-28 after the Mountaineers scored four points in a possession following a technical foul. The Jayhawks went on a 15-0 run to take the lead for the first time all night and shot 62.5% from the floor during the third quarter to lead 44-43 with 10 minutes to play.

Kersgieter started off the fourth quarter by hitting two threes within the first minute and a half to give the Jayhawks a three-point lead. This led to the Jayhawks starting the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run. Franklin dished out seven assists, which is a new season high, and Mayberry scored 13 points in the fourth quarter alone as KU pulled away for the 77-58 victory.

The win improves the Jayhawks record to 13-4 overall, and 3-3 in Big 12 play. Kansas is now 2-1 at home in Big 12 conference play and 9-1 overall at Allen Fieldhouse this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ask any coach or player around the NFL and they are bound to tell you that the speed of the game picks up when the playoffs arrive. There is no longer time to think on the field; decisions more often are made by in-the-moment instincts rather than carefully crafted game plans.

Perhaps that is why Patrick Mahomes thrives in the postseason.

Whether it be his preponderance of no-look passes, crazy side-arm slings or the myriad other ways that the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback sparks creativity on the field, there is arguably no better player in the NFL when it comes to playing sandlot football. His ability to make something out of nothing leaves teammates and foes alike shaking their heads.

“My family or friends are like, ‘Oh my God, how’s Patrick Mahomes?’ And I’m like, ’He’s just a special individual,” said Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, whose career has been rejuvenated during his first season playing with him.

"It's just like playing ‘Madden’ back when you had Michael Vick, who can just run all over the field and then launch it 80 yards down the field," Smith-Schuster explained. “It's kind of like that but for more it's ILR — in real life.”

What has become known simply as Mahomes Magic around Kansas City tends to shine brightest this time of year, and the results are downright incredible: He has never failed to reach the AFC championship game in four years as a starter, twice going to the Super Bowl and once winning its MVP award while ending the franchise's 50-year title drought.

He will try to improve to 5-0 in the divisional round on Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I think all the guys understood that whenever they signed with this team that we want to win the Super Bowl. And if we don't, we feel like it's not where we should be,” Mahomes said. “But you can't look ahead. We have a great team that we're playing this week, that's playing great football, so how can we practice today so that we're better by the end of the week? And I think you have to have that mindset — and I think the guys do — and I think we're in a good spot.”

Rarely are the Chiefs, winners of the last seven AFC West titles, in a bad spot with Mahomes on the field. In all, he is 8-3 in the postseason. He is averaging 307 yards passing per game, a number driven up by a 404-yard effort in last year's wild-card win over the Steelers. And he has thrown 28 touchdown passes against seven interceptions while adding five TD runs, including one in last year's divisional-round win over the Bills.

That night at Arrowhead Stadium may have best encapsulated Mahomes in the playoffs.

The Chiefs trailed 29-26 with less than 2 minutes left when he threw since-departed Tyreek Hill a 64-yard touchdown pass to regain the lead. And when the Bills raced the other way and scored with 13 seconds to go, Mahomes answered with two long completions to Hill and Travis Kelce to set up Harrison Butker's tying field goal as time expired.

In overtime, Mahomes completed all six of his passes, with the last the winning TD toss to Kelce in a 42-36 victory.

“Pat's a very competitive person,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said, “and on top of that, obviously, he's a great football player. He's going to do whatever he can to make sure that he can help us be successful.”

That means tirelessly working on his craft, and the results are evident: Mahomes shattered his own franchise record with 5,250 yards passing this season, to go with a league-leading 41 touchdown passes and four touchdown runs.

“With me being there with him for his rookie year to where he's at now, it's so far advanced,” said quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy, who spent time as the head coach of the Bears before returning to Kansas City this season.

“Sometimes the hardest thing for some quarterbacks to do is to call a play. For him, that’s like second nature. It’s simple,” Nagy said. “It wasn’t like that as a rookie. Sometimes we take that for granted because we have some unique formations, motion shifts, plays, etc. Well, that’s just the beginning of the play. You’ve got to get up and do everything else at the line of scrimmage then, oh, by the way, you’ve got to make a play.”

Mahomes has been making them for years. And making them look easy.

The last time he stepped on the field in the playoffs, against the Bengals in last year's AFC championship, he produced perhaps the worst performance of his career. Mahomes still threw for 275 and three touchdowns, but he also threw a pair of interceptions, and they gave Cincinnati a chance to rally from a 21-3 deficit for a 27-24 overtime victory.

It's a loss that has fueled Mahomes through the offseason, the regular season and right into this year's postseason.

“You build up for this all season,” he said. “The regular season, you take it week by week, but you want to be here in the playoffs, and you know you're going to be playing the best football teams in the league, and that's what you want to do as a competitor. And so I'm excited to go up against a great football team at Arrowhead Stadium. That's always a good time.”

And he's fueled by a frustrating overtime loss to the Bengals the last time he stepped on the field in the postseason in last year's AFC title game.

(AP) — The Bills and Bengals can refocus on their next matchup now that Buffalo's safety Damar Hamlin has shown remarkable signs in his recovery some three weeks after collapsing on the field in Cincinnati. Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and needed to be resuscitated in the first quarter of Buffalo's since-canceled game against Cincinnati on Jan. 2. The teams meet in Buffalo on Sunday in the AFC divisional round of the playoffs. Bills coach Sean McDermott says his team has been uplifted by the sight of Hamlin starting to make regular visits to the team's facility this week.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Staley’s status that he would remain coach of the Los Angeles Chargers was a source of debate among fans and commentators during the past two weeks. Staley though said during his season-ending press conference on Wednesday that he was aware of the speculation, but wasn't worried. The Bolts improved from 9-8 in Staley’s first campaign in 2021 to 10-7 and the franchise’s first trip to the playoffs since 2018 this season. Both years though have ended in disappointing fashion in which decisions by Staley backfired. The Chargers blew a 27-point lead last Saturday against Jacksonville in the AFC wild-card round and lost 31-30.

UNDATED (AP) — The 12th-ranked Iowa State men's basketball team keeps doing what it was not supposed to do. The Cyclones made the biggest turnaround ever by a power conference team when they went from winning two games to reaching the NCAA Sweet 16. One of the game's feel-good stories continues after coach T.J. Otzelberger’s second ISU team entered this season picked eighth in the 10-team Big 12. The Cyclones have won five of their first six conference games for the first time since 2000 and are in a three-way tie for first place. Playing stifling defense is the team's signature.

UNDATED (AP) — Chris Ford, a member of the Boston Celtics 1981 championship team, a longtime NBA coach and the player credited with scoring the league’s first 3-point basket, has died at the age of 74. His family announced his death in a statement issued by the Celtics. No official cause was given, but the statement said Ford died Tuesday. INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — Hutchinson knocked off some rust in the second half Wednesday night as the Dragons nailed 11 three-pointers in just 20 attempts (55%).

The Dragons have hit at least 11 three-pointers in their last three contests, but converted on just 27.5% of their attempts just two games ago.

Four Dragons hit at least three triples: Aaron Franklin (4-8), Aaron Potter (3-5), Jayden Garrison (3-6) and Jackson Leyba (3-5).

Franklin (20), Potter (15), and Garrison (15) each finished in double digits. Leyba shot exclusively from three-point land and finished with nine.

Kernan Bundy (12), Cris Carroll (11) and Ra'Sean Frederick (11) also scored in double figures as six Dragons scored 11 or more.

Hutchinson shot the ball 21 more times than Indy (81-60).

Hutchinson got 27 points off those turnovers and held Indy to 17 total points in the first half.

The Dragons started 1-4 on the road this season, but have won all three road games of 2023.

Hutchinson, now winners of five straight, only turned the ball over 10 times in the contest.

Mya Williams shot 12 of 19 from the floor and finished with 28 points .

Monae Duffy notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Journey Armstead (14) and Morgan Browning (12) also scored in double figures for Hutchinson.

Indy shot just 31% for the contest, including an ice-cold 17% (3-17) to start the game.

The Dragons took just nine three-point attempts and shot 46.4% overall.

Hutchinson hit 15 of 17 free throws (88.2%) despite shooting 67% for the season.

The Pirates had a four-points lead midway through the fourth quarter, but scored only five points in the final 6 minutes, 32 seconds of the game.The Blue Dragons won the first meeting with the Pirates 61-53 on November 16 inthe Sports Arena. Hutchinson hit only 2 of 18 3-point goals and shot only 29.5 percent overall, but got 21 points from Williams, 12 points from Kali Howard and 7 points and 21 rebounds from Duffy in the victory. D’yanna Maxey had 18 points and four assists to pace the Pirates. Independence’s leading scorer, Valentina Ojeda played with foul through and was held to 10 points.Saturday’s win at Garden City gave the Blue Dragons a 3-4 road record for the sea- son. The Blue Dragons have lost two in a row at the ICC Fieldhouse.Williams is now just 44 points from becoming just the sixth Blue Dragon player to score 1,000 career points. Williams is currently ninth on the Hutchinson career scoring list.
