KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs know as well as any team in the NFL the importance of backup quarterbacks, and that makes the fact that coach Andy Reid called the competition for the spot too close to call after Monday's practice noteworthy.

The Chiefs signed veteran Blaine Gabbert to fill the role of Chad Henne, who retired last season after five years as the primary backup to Patrick Mahomes.

But Gabbert has been pushed throughout camp by Shane Buechele, a former undrafted free agent and practice squad staple, and the duo continues to go back and forth heading into the Chiefs' preseason finale.

Buechele got most of the work with the No. 2 offense on Monday. Gabbert has worked in that role as well.

“Those two are real close. Real close,” Reid said. “We'll just let it play out here. See how it goes. But that's good competition.”

The Chiefs have other spots still to be decided heading into Saturday's game against the Browns, including the last couple of wide receiver jobs and spots along the defensive line.

But those aren't nearly as important as the quarterback, where the backup can go from holding a clipboard to having an entire season resting in his hands in an instant.

That was the case twice for Henne during his time in Kansas City.

The first time against the Browns during the divisional round of the 2020 playoffs, when Mahomes was knocked from the game with a concussion early in the second half. Henne led the Chiefs the rest of the way, completing an audacious fourth-and-1 throw to Tyreek Hill near midfield in the final minutes to put away a 22-17 victory.

The Chiefs beat the Bills for the AFC title before losing to the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl.

The second time came last season, when Mahomes sprained his ankle late in the first half against Jacksonville. The Chiefs led 10-7 when Henne trotted onto the field, with Kansas City backed up to its 2-yard line, and led the Chiefs 98 yards with a short touchdown throw to Travis Kelce finishing off another superb emergency appearance.

Mahomes finished out the 27-20 victory, then led Kansas City past the Bengals in the AFC title game before beating the Eagles in the Super Bowl — when Henne was still at the ready as Mahomes played through his injury.

So yes, the backup quarterback job certainly matters in Kansas City.

“That's what makes a great team," Buechele said, "is when guys are competing for a spot.”

Not just any competition, though. Quality competition.

Gabbert has the benefit of experience, entering the league as a first-round pick in 2011 and playing for five different teams over the past 11 seasons. He's appeared in 67 games, making 48 starts, and thrown for more than 9,300 yards. And all of that is a big reason why the Chiefs signed him to a $1,317,500 contract for this season.

“We were watching film," the 33-year-old Gabbert said, recalling a moment from a meeting earlier in camp, “and there’s a play we put in at the end of the game and it was from 2011 in Jacksonville, and they were like, ‘That was you at quarterback? We couldn’t even see you the film was so grainy.’ So that really made me feel old.”

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old Buechele has never thrown a regular-season NFL pass. But he does have the benefit of experience in what can be a complicated system, spending the past two seasons on the Kansas City practice squad.

“This is the first time that I’ve ever been in the same offense for three years in a row,” Buechele said. “I feel confident in my ability and my preparation and knowing this offense in and out. Obviously we can keep getting smarter, but just the confidence I have and the preparation in knowing this offense has really helped me be successful on the field.”

It just might earn him the Chiefs' backup job, too.

NOTES: RB Isiah Pacheco was out of the yellow no-contact jersey for the first time in camp on Monday. Reid said it's possible he could play against the Browns. ... 🏈 Backup job to Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes remains tight as preseason finale nears

<a>MANHATTAN, Kan.</a>&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State senior offensive lineman&nbsp;Cooper Beebe&nbsp;added to his preseason honors on Monday as he was named a First Team Preseason All-American by the Associated Press.

Beebe, who was a second-team selection after the 2022 season, is the second Wildcat in as many years to be named a First Team Preseason All-American by the AP.

A product of Kansas City, Kansas, Beebe has started 35 career games, including each of the last 32 contests dating back to the 2020 season. He picked up 2022 First Team All-America honors from&nbsp;The Athletic, ESPN, FOX Sports and&nbsp;Sporting News, as well as numerous second team and honorable mention accolades. A two-time First Team All-Big 12 selection, Beebe was named the 2022 Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year by the league’s coaches.

Beebe, who has also named a Preseason All-American by the Walter Camp Found, ESPN,&nbsp;The Athletic, Phil Steele, Athlon and 247Sports, was named to the preseason watch lists for the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award.

Kansas State opens the 2023 season next Saturday by hosting SEMO inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium in a 6 p.m., contest that will be shown on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. 🏈 K-State’s Beebe named AP Preseason All-American

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The National Junior College Athletic Association released its preseason Top 15 football poll on Monday afternoon, and the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons come in at No. 2.

HutchCC comes in just behind Iowa Western, who beat the Blue Dragons last December in the national championship game in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Blue Dragons will play the Reivers in the regular season finale on Nov. 11 at Gowans Stadium.

The Blue Dragons are one of four Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference teams ranked in the initial poll. Coffeyville is No. 7, Garden City No. 9, and Butler No. 12.

Hutchinson will open the season this Saturday in Corsicana, Texas against No. 11 Navarro College. The game will be broadcasted on Country 102.9-FM, the radio home for Blue Dragon athletics. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with Papa Johns Countdown to Kickoff beginning at 6:30 p.m.

This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Blue Dragons have started a season ranked in the Top 5 of the national rankings. The Blue Dragons started the 2022 season ranked No. 3 and in 2021, they were preseason No. 1. In 2020-21 they were picked No. 1 and went wire-to-wire to win the national championship. The 2019 Blue Dragons were picked No. 5.

McCOOK, Nebraska – The No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College volleyball team had nine service aces and eight team blocks as the Blue Dragons earned their first sweep of the season with a 3-0 victory over Gillette College on Saturday in Match 3 of the McCook Invitational.

The Blue Dragons rolled to a 25-16, 25-14, 25-11 victory to improve to 2-1 on opening weekend.

Hutchinson had a balanced offense and also took advantage of 20 Gillette attack errors and seven service errors.

WICHITA, Kan. - Pierson Ohl had another fantastic outing on the mound for the Wind Surge. He gave up a home run on the first pitch of the ball game but was otherwise perfect. He pitched five innings and only gave up one other hit besides the leadoff home run. The dominant pitching performance put the Surge in perfect position to defeat the Cardinals in the series finale. Wichita won the game with a score of 12-1 and they also won the series victory after winning five of the six games at home.

The Cardinals got off to a hot start when Victor Scott II hit a leadoff solo home run on the first pitch of the ballgame.

The Wind Surge had a monster five run inning in the bottom of the third. Tanner Schobel hit an RBI single on a sharp ground ball to center field. Alex Isola hit a two RBI single on a sharp ground ball to left field. Jake Rucker got the last two runs of the inning off a two-run home run that landed in the Boot Barn Home Run Deck.

Wichita extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Ernie Yake hit his first home run for the Wind Surge on a fly ball to right field that bounced off the Chick-fil-A foul pole for a solo home run. David Banuelos then hit a two RBI double to increase the Surge lead to seven runs.

In the bottom of the eighth the Wind Surge increased their lead to double digits. Banuelos and Rucker both hit their second double of the day, and they both had two RBIs on the hits as well.

Pierson Ohl made his tenth start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched five innings where he only gave up one run off two hits. He struck out three batters and walked none. He was credited with the win and his record improves to (6-3).

The starting pitcher for Springfield was Logan Gragg. He pitched three innings and gave up five runs off six hits. He also struck out two batters and walked three more. He was credited with the loss and his record falls to (3-6).

The Wichita Wind Surge improve to (24-21, 52-61) and the Springfield Cardinals fall to (21-24, 55-59).

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (AP) — Viktor Hovland had the best round of his career at a good time. He set the course record at Olympia Fields with a 61. That included making seven birdies on the back nine Sunday to rally past Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick. Scheffler still goes to the Tour Championship as the No. 1 seed. Jordan Spieth also is going to East Lake, but just barely. He finished bogey-bogey and needed a late blunder by Denny McCarthy and Sahith Theegala to stay just inside the top 30. SYDNEY (AP) — Spain has won the Women's World Cup for the first time with Olga Carmona's first-half strike giving La Roja a 1-0 victory over England in the final at Stadium Australia. After the final the player learned of her father's death, the Spanish soccer federation said. The triumph for Spain avenged a quarterfinal loss to eventual champion England in the European championship last year. La Roja's first major international trophy also followed a tumultuous preparation for the team and its coach. Now they're world champions. Spain joins Germany as the only countries to win both men's and women's world titles. England's long wait for another World Cup continues.

MADRID (AP) — Spaniards have erupted in joy after La Roja won the Women's World Cup, with some following coach Jorge Vilda's call to take to the streets and celebrate Spain's first major soccer title in more than a decade. Patriots' Isaiah Bolden evaluated, released from hospital after being carted off late vs. Packers

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Patriots' rookie cornerback Isaiah Bolden has been released from a Green Bay area hospital following a series of evaluations after being carted off the field in the fourth quarter of New England's exhibition game with the Packers on Saturday night. The game was suspended after the injury. The Patriots said in a statement that Bolden, who appeared to collide with teammate Calvin Munson while attempting to make a hit on a pass completion to Green Bay's Malik Heath, will travel with the team Sunday when it returns Massachusetts. The Patriots and Tennessee Titans have canceled their scheduled joint practices Tuesday and Wednesday in Nashville. A person with knowledge of the decision says Aaron Rodgers will make his debut with the New York Jets next Saturday night against the Giants in the teams' preseason finale. The 39-year-old Rodgers hasn't played in an exhibition game since 2018 while with the Green Bay Packers but will start in the Jets' final tuneup before the regular-season opener on Sept. 11 against the Buffalo Bills. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday because the Jets didn't announce the decision. The New York Post first reported Rodgers' debut with New York would come against the Giants.

Lyles wins world title at 100 meters and sets his sights on more

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Noah Lyles calls himself the "Told you're not a 100 guy." That didn't stop him. In fact, nobody could at the world championships on Sunday in what has always been his second-best race. Now, he doesn't see anyone slowing his path to becoming the world's next great Olympic sprinter. The 26-year-old American reeled in the field to win the 100-meter world title in 9.83 seconds. That's a victory that puts him in position to be the first man to complete the 100-200 double since Usain Bolt made a habit of it at Olympics and world championships from 2008-16.

CHICAGO –&nbsp;Kansas scored four unanswered goals in the second half Sunday to lift the Jayhawks to a 4-1 win at Loyola Chicago and return to Lawrence with a 1-0-1 record after the first road trip of the season. Sophomore Lexi Watts, freshman Montelene Dymond, redshirt junior Hallie Klanke and junior Magali Gagné all scored in the win.

The goal for Dymond was the first of her career, while Klanke’s was her first goal as a Jayhawk. Watts, who scored six goals last season and was voted to the Big 12 All-Freshman team, scored the first KU goal of the season and Gagné’s goal was her first since the 2021 season after missing the 2022 season with an injury.

“I thought the kids’ response was fantastic,” Head Coach Mark Francis said. “They told me in the huddle ‘we’re in this, let’s just keep going’. Within two minutes, we equalized, so that was a great response. The mentality of this group – you saw it on Thursday – I think the difference today was that we ended up getting the result and the win. Our grit is creating opportunities as well, not just making it difficult for opponents. I thought defensively we did the work, especially for a Sunday game and made it difficult for them.”

Kansas trailed 1-0 shortly into the second half after Loyola Chicago’s Amanda Cassidy converted on a direct free kick just outside the box. Less than two minutes later, in the 58th minute, Watts responded with the first Jayhawks goal of the year when she redirected a pass from Klanke into the back of the net.

With the game tied at 1-1, Dymond was the recipient of a ball that deflected into the box. She was able to place it in the top left corner to give the Jayhawks a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute.

Then, in the 79th minute, Klanke received a pass from Brie Severns at the edge of the box and struck the ball off the crossbar and down into the goal.

Gagné scored the final goal of the game in the 86th minute. She dribbled the ball into the box with a pair of defenders chasing her and was able to hit the ball with her left foot, off the right post and into the net.

Kansas held a 22-8 advantage on shots, including a 10-4 edge for shots on goal. Severns led the Jayhawks with five shots, four of them on goal.

EVANSTON, Illinois –&nbsp;K-State soccer went on the defensive Sunday afternoon at 18th-ranked Northwestern, and K-State came away with a 0-0 draw for its efforts at Martin Stadium. The performance was the first road draw against a ranked opponent in program history. HOW IT HAPPENED - K-State (1-0-1) parried away 19 total shots, including 12 in the first half, by Northwestern (1-0-1). Of the 19 shots, only five were on goal. - Sophomore goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/murphy-sheaff/11202">Murphy Sheaff</a>&nbsp;was up to the task, as she stopped all five of the threatening attempts. - This was K-State's first shutout since September 22, 2022, at Iowa State. ⚽ WSOC: K-State draws at No. 18 Northwestern

A pair of freshmen had memorable debuts and the No. 18-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team earned its fourth-straight season-opening victory on Sunday morning against Northeastern Junior College.

The Blue Dragons scored six first-half goals and rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Plainswomen at the Salthawk Sports Complex. The game was moved up to 10 a.m. to avoid the intense summer heat.

The 1-0 Blue Dragons open Jayhawk Conference play on Wednesday at Garden City with a scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff at Broncbuster Stadium.

The victory was the 248th in the coaching career of Hutchinson head coach Sammy Lane. The Blue Dragons are now 15-4-0 all-time in season openers.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/marx_katharina_hedq">Katharina Marx</a>&nbsp;had a five-point game in her Blue Dragon debut with a goal and three assists. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/edwards_kaitlyn_56gt">Kaitlyn Edwards</a>&nbsp;scored two goals for a four-point game as the Blue Dragons out-shot NJC 24-1 and held the Plainswomen to no shots on goal.

Marx's five points are the most by a Blue Dragon making their debut since Sheena Nicol had a four-point game against North Lake College in the 2016 opener. She is also the 15th Blue Dragon to have three assists in one half.

Edwards became the first Blue Dragon to have a multi-goal game in their Blue Dragon debut since Sydney Blackwell had two goals against Northeast Nebraska in 2018.

Delgado started the scoring for the Dragons when working on the left side of the penalty box, she made several 1-on-1 moves to gain some space and ripped a shot from 16 yards out to score an unassisted goal at the 33:21 mark of the first half and a 1-0 lead.

Just 1 minute, 12 seconds later, Mayumi found herself with a nearly wide-open net after a Marx cross from the right side. Mayumi scored to make it 2-0 with 32:09 to play. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/hoy_destiny_838y">Destiny Hoy</a>&nbsp;was credited with a secondary assist.

The Dragons made it 3-0 when Marx was working on the right side of the goal. She made a quick drive to the net and flicked a pass to a driving Azevedo, who scored for a 3-0 lead with 27:19 to play in the first half.

Edwards scored the fourth and fifth goals of the half. ⚽ WSOC: Blue Dragons blank Northeastern JC in season opener

BUHLER, Kan.&nbsp;— Buhler High School senior Jeffrey Neill announced on Sunday afternoon that he has committed to play baseball at HutchCC for the 2024-25 school year.&nbsp;

Neill is a three-sport student-athlete at Buhler High School, playing football, basketball, and baseball. 

He is the son of Crusaders baseball coach John Neill, and younger brother of current Blue Dragon baseball player, Bradley Neill.

As a junior, Neill was a first team all-state selection by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches as a middle infielder, as well as first team pitcher and second team short stop on the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III teams.&nbsp;

Neill hit .405 at the plate this past spring, going 30-for-74 with 11 doubles, two triples and one home run. He threw 42 1/3 innings on the mound, while striking out 20 and walking eight, with a 4.63 ERA.

The Crusaders finished 15-7 in the spring of 2023 and fell to McPherson in the regional championship game.&nbsp;

⚾ Buhler native Neill commits to play at HutchCC

CHICAGO (AP) — Seiya Suzuki and Miguel Amaya hit solo homers, helping Kyle Hendricks and the Chicago Cubs beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Sunday.

Chicago, which has a one-game lead fir the NL's final wild card, won two in a row after losing the series opener.

“It is such a close-knit group. Picking one another up, day in and day out. Again, we're just playing good baseball focused on the fundamentals one day at a time. We're in a good spot, we just got to go on a good stretch here and keep it rolling," said Hendricks.

Jordan Lyles (3-14) became the major leagues' first 14-game loser as Kansas City fell for the fourth time in five games and dropped to 40-86, better only than Oakland among the 30 major league teams.

Hendricks (5-6) won for the first time since July 25, allowing one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He retired 10 in a row before his lone walk, to Matt Beaty in the fifth inning.

Hendricks was a valuable member of the rotation during the 2016 World Series championship team.

"There is a few pieces missing right now, my curveball, runners on base, a couple of things, if I can bring that all together,” Hendricks said.

Mark Leiter Jr. got two outs in the seventh, Julian Merryweather pitched a perfect eighth and Adbert Alzolay got his 18th save in 19 chances after allowing pinch-hitter Maikel Garcia's run-scoring single and Beaty's RBI groundout. With a runner on second, Dairon Blanco hit a game-ending groundout.

Lyles gave up four runs — two earned — and five hits in his third complete game this season. Lyles has pitched four games this season in which he has thrown at least eight innings and lost.

After Michael Massey's RBI single in the first, the Cubs went ahead in the bottom half when center fielder Kyle Isbel allowed Ian Happ's single to bounce by for a run-scoring, two-base error and Cody Bellinger followed with a sacrifice fly.

“Had some ups some good and some bad. Obviously, the first inning wasn’t ideal.," Lyle said. "Later on in the game just two mistakes, backup sliders that left the yard, just execution-wise it wasn’t there on those two pitches, thankfully there was no one on base so it was only a single run each time,”

Suzuki hit his 12th home run of the season in the fifth and Amaya hit his fourth in the eighth inning.

Royals SS Bobby Witt Jr. made a sliding backhanded catch in the outfield grass to rob Mike Tauchman of a hit in the third inning.

Cubs manager David Ross fiill the open spot in the starting rotation with LHP Drew Smyly. “I am just hoping he can build off a couple of performances out of the pen. I think there are some analytic numbers that went to leaning towards him, there is some experience leaning towards him. I think there is the value of Hayden (Wesneski) out of the 'pen," Ross said. Since Aug. 13, Smyly has not allowed a run in three straight relief appearances. He is 7-8 with a 5.01 ERA as a starter this season.

Both teams were playing in the final for the first time. The triumph for Spain avenged a quarterfinal loss to eventual champion England in the European championship last year. La Roja's first major international trophy made Spain the first European team to win the Women's World Cup since Germany in 2007.

Patriots-Packers preseason game called off after injury to Isaiah Bolden

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — New England's preseason game with the Green Bay Packers was called off on Saturday night after Patriots rookie cornerback Isaiah Bolden was carted off the field early in the fourth quarter. The seventh-round pick from Jackson State appeared to collide with teammate Calvin Munson while attempting to make a hit on a pass completion to Green Bay's Malik Heath. Both teams agreed to stop the game after Bolden was carted off the field. The game stopped with the Patriots leading 21-17 with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter.

(AP) — Patrick Mahomes saw his first extended action of the preseason, throwing for 105 yards and a touchdown, and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Arizona Cardinals 38-10 on Saturday night in the second preseason game for both teams. Penalties could be possible, the person told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the investigation has not been publicly announced. SYDNEY (AP) — Spain made history in winning its first Women's World Cup title on Sunday with a 1-0 win over England. The victory made La Roja the first team to hold the under-17, under-20 and senior world titles at the same time. Spain is the fifth winner in nine editions of the Women's World Cup and joins Germany as the only two nations to win both the men's and women's tournament. Spain's men's team won in 2010. Spain played in the final in only its third appearance in the tournament.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kansas City's first-team offense didn't play well during its first few series Saturday night, dropping a few passes, committing a few penalties and coming up well short of the end zone.

An expected light preseason night for the starters was suddenly becoming a little longer. Before the third drive, MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes had a message for his teammates.

“If we don't want to keep playing, we'd better score," Mahomes said.

The Chiefs responded with a 10-play, 92-yard drive&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1693060892248932792?s=20">that ended in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Justin Watson</a>&nbsp;and Kansas City was on its way to a 38-10 victorty over the Arizona Cardinals.

It was the first extended preseason action for Mahomes, who completed 10 of 15 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, playing the entire first quarter. The defending Super Bowl champs never trailed and outgained the Cardinals 504 yards to 286.

Kansas City rookie receiver Rashee Rice — a second-round pick out of SMU — caught eight passes for 96 yards.

“You can see the talent,” Mahomes said. “He makes a lot of tough catches. He had a drop early and then responded well. I think that's just the jitters of being in your first few NFL games. I've got a lot of trust in him that he'll make those catches in tough spaces.”

Shane Buechele was 10 of 10 for 105 yards, while also running for a 15-yard touchdown. Blaine Gabbert was 7 of 8 for 120 yards and two touchdowns.“It was a good effort, all the way around,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “Defensively, I thought we started fast, which is what we needed to do. Offensively, we had a few hiccups early. We've got to take care of business with that. Gannon said the entire defense gave up too many explosive plays.“I obviously need to play better,” Simmons said. “I feel that each and every game. Explosives definitely are something we need to tone down.”HOME AWAY FROM HOMEIt was the third time in less than a year that the Chiefs have played at State Farm Stadium.Kansas City beat Arizona 44-21 in last year's season opener before returning before returning to the desert for their Super Bowl win over the Eagles in February.
