🎾 Area high school girls state qualifiers

Visit Hutch, host of the 2023 NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship, announces that online tickets are on sale now for the November Championship. New this year, the Championship dates are November 15-18, making the Championship a four-day event, instead of three days.

This is the fifth year Hutchinson will host the 16 team, false double-elimination Volleyball Championship. The winners of the 12 Division I Volleyball districts and four At-Large teams will compete for the National Championship. With the format change, matches will begin on Wednesday and run through Saturday. The first three days of competition will be played on two courts at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, and Saturday’s matches will be played on a single court.

All-Session Passes for the four-day event are available for $50 for all patrons and allow entrance to every match, or single day tickets can be purchased for $25. All tickets can be purchased online at www.visithutch.com/njcaavolleyballtickets.

🏐 Tickets on sale for NJCAA DI championship hosted at Sports Arena

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/wyatt_jayda_vgup">Jayda Wyatt</a>&nbsp;scored two goals to start a second-half scoring explosion as the No. 10-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team to their fifth-consecutive victory on Wednesday night at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Tied 0-0 at halftime, the Blue Dragons had their biggest single offensive half in the final 45 minutes of the season in a 6-1 victory over the Coffeyville Red Ravens.

The Blue Dragons improve to 12-1-3 overall and 9-1-3 (30 points) in the Jayhawk Conference. The 10th-ranked Blue Dragons travel to No. 7 Barton at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Great Bend. Coffeyville is now 4-10-0 overall and 2-10-0 in the KJCCC.

Wyatt had her second multi-goal game of the season and earned her first career game-winning goal in her four-point game.

The Blue Dragons dodged a bullet when goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/slothower_karsyn_3puo">Karsyn Slothower</a>&nbsp;made a huge save on a Red Raven breakaway to keep the game scoreless.

The Dragons continued to press the Ravens and finally broke through just 2:52 in second half. Wyatt took an Edwards pass and beat Coffeyville keeper Rosa Calabuig low and to her right for a 1-0 lead.

Wyatt scored her second goal of the game just 2:59 later when she hammered home a free kick from 20-yards out to give Hutchinson a 2-0 lead with 39:09 to play in the second half. Wyatt now has seven goals for the season.

The third and fourth Blue Dragon goals came just 1:28 apart.

Delgado scored her 13th goal of the season on a header from a perfect&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/hoffman_emma_5iyj">Emma Hoffman</a>&nbsp;cross with 39:48 to play for a 3-0 lead. Delgado then returned the favor by assisting Salkeld on her first goal of the season, which gave the Dragons a 4-0 lead with 38:20 remaining.

Coffeyville broke the shutout in the 67th minute when Thayline Teixeira scored to cut the Dragon lead to 4-1. The Blue Dragons immediately answered 21 seconds later when Marx broke in and scored from a Mayumi assist for a 5-1 lead with 23:10 remaining.

The Dragons capped their six-goal second half when Edwards headed home an Azevedo corner for a 6-1 lead with 4:09 to play.

The Blue Dragons had a season-high 26 total shots, out-shooting Coffeyville 26-9. The Dragons scored off two of their seven corner kicks.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — An independent panel has downgraded five Level I violations lodged by the NCAA against Kansas and basketball coach Bill Self. That effectively ends a long saga that began with a 2017 FBI investigation into college basketball corruption. Kansas will be required to remove its 2018 Final Four banner and vacate wins from the 2017-18 season in which Silvio De Sousa, a player central to the case, participated. The case against the Jayhawks hinged on whether representatives of the apparel company Adidas were considered boosters when two of them arranged payments to prospective recruits. Self served a school-imposed four-game suspension last season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos will be trying to end a 15-game losing streak to the Kansas City Chiefs when the longtime AFC West rivals play Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium. The skid spans six head or interim coaches for Denver, and it is one that new coach Sean Payton will be out to end. The Broncos have lost four of their first five games this season, including last week's loss to the Jets in which they blew a halftime lead. The Chiefs have not lost since their opener against Detroit. They are coming off a win in Minnesota in which tight end Travis Kelce hurt his ankle. He is expected to play against the Broncos.

(AP) — Kentucky coach Mark Stoops emphasized support for the fan base in the wake of a comment during his weekly radio show in which he appeared to challenge disgruntled Wildcats fans to “pony up” more financially to attract players to his program. The 11th-year Wildcats coach sparked scrutiny on Monday night in response to a caller’s complaint about No. 24 Kentucky’s struggle to compete with SEC powers Georgia and Alabama in light of Saturday night’s 51-13 blowout loss at top-ranked Georgia and raised the issue of NIL opportunities for players. Stoops said during the SEC coaches teleconference that one part of his comment was taken out of context and that he loves Wildcats fans.

PHOENIX (AP) — The hard-hitting Arizona Diamondbacks rode a record-setting barrage of solo homers in the third inning to a 4-2 win in Game 3 of the NL Division Series on Wednesday night, sweeping the 100-win Los Angeles Dodgers out of the playoffs. The D-backs return to the NL Championship Series for the first time since 2007, where they’ll face either the Phillies or Braves. Arizona has won all five of its games during the postseason, sweeping aside both the Brewers in a best-of-three series and the Dodgers in a best-of-five. Arizona's Geraldo Perdomo, Ketel Marte, Christian Walker and Gabriel Moreno all hit solo homers in the third, setting a postseason record for homers in an inning.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — José Abreu homered for the third time in two games for the Houston Astros in a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins. The Astros reached their seventh straight AL Championship Series and eliminated the Twins in Game 4 of their AL Division Series. Abreu hit a two-run rocket in the fourth inning off reliever Caleb Thielbar. Michael Brantley also went deep as the Astros hit 10 homers in the series. Abreu had eight RBIs. Houston will host Texas in Game 1 of the ALCS on Sunday. Justin Verlander is scheduled to take the mound for his 36th career postseason start.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer and a solo shot to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 10-2 win over the Atlanta Braves in Game 3 of the National League Division Series. The Phillies took a 2-1 lead and can advance to the NL Championship Series for the second straight season with a win at home Thursday. Harper's homers answered ridicule from Braves shortstop Orlando Arcia. Arcia had poked fun at Harper after his baserunning blunder played a role in the Phillies' loss in Game 2. Nick Castellanos, Trea Turner and Brandon Marsh also homered for the Phillies.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers’ third straight 100-win season led to a third consecutive postseason flop. A three-game Division Series sweep by the Arizona Diamondbacks that ended with a 4-2 defeat highlighted how much expanded playoffs have devalued the regular season. Los Angeles has reached the playoffs in 11 straight years, the third-longest streak in major league history. The Dodgers won the NL West in 10 of those seasons, yet their only World Series in that span was following the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

UNDATED (AP) — The family of Olympic gymnastics champion Mary Lou Retton says she is “continuing to fight.” Retton is in intensive care at a Texas hospital with a rare form of pneumonia. Retton's oldest daughter Shayla Kelley Schrepfer says the family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for the 1984 Olympic gold medalist. The family has received more than $275,000 in donations to a fund intended to help Retton pay her medical bills. Schrepfer did not get into specifics of Retton's condition, saying it's a “day to day process.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are on their sixth head or interim coach since their most recent win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Perhaps Sean Payton will be the one to finally end the losing streak.

The Broncos head to Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night for the first of two games against Kansas City this season toting one of the most incredible skids in a league that prides itself on its parity.

Denver has not beaten the Chiefs since Week 2 of the 2015 season, when Gary Kubiak — and Peyton Manning — proceeded to lead the Broncos to a victory in the Super Bowl.

“They do a lot of things well. Quite honestly, they've found ways to win even when it hasn't gone as well as they would have hoped,” Payton said of the Chiefs, “and that's the sign of a really good football team — a championship team.”

That has been the case much of the season. The Chiefs (4-1) have not lost since their opener against Detroit but, other than a game against the woebegone Bears that was over by halftime, they have had to squeak out wins against everyone else.

Patrick Mahomes acknowledged that he has yet to play his best this season. The reigning league MVP already has thrown four interceptions while struggling to get help from one of the league's youngest wide receiver groups. But Mahomes is coming off a better performance in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-vikings-9ba44f8aec639988f8eeba3a31a101ad">last week's 27-20 win in Minnesota</a>&nbsp;and now faces what is statistically the NFL's worst defense.

“When you play a team like the Broncos, same as any division opponent, there's another level of intensity,” said Mahomes, who is 11-0 against Denver. “I'm not worried about a streak or anything like that. I'm worried about winning against a division opponent.”

The Broncos (1-4) are worried about winning against anyone.

Their latest letdown came&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jets-broncos-payton-hackett-wilson-5d14114ff481ffe30732151121c1bfe2">last Sunday against the Jets</a>, when any momentum they gained from their come-from-behind win over Chicago evaporated in the second half, allowing New York to rally for a 31-21 victory.

Yet the Broncos came out of the game optimistic they are on the right track. Two of their four losses are by a combined three points, proof they can hang around with just about anyone — except the Dolphins, who romped to a 70-20 win in Week 3.

“We really should and could be 4-1,” the Broncos' Russell Wilson said, "but ‘coulda, shoulda, woulda’ is not good enough.”

The Broncos coulda, woulda, shoulda ended their maddening streak against the Chiefs a year ago.

They trailed 34-28 early in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get the go-ahead touchdown in Nathaniel Hackett's penultimate game as coach. Two weeks later, they trailed 27-24 in the fourth quarter but couldn't score again in interim coach Jerry Rosburg's debut.

“They've got a lot of talent on that team. Our guys looked at the tape and they understand that, and Sean is a heck of a football coach,” said Chiefs counterpart Andy Reid, who has presided over the entire 15-game win streak but brushed it aside this week.

“It doesn't matter right now,” he said. “That doesn't count for Thursday, right?”

All-Pro tight end&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-travis-kelce-ed786490b06ec37014c45f018b6b1633">Travis Kelce is expected to play</a>&nbsp;against the Broncos after hurting his ankle late in the first half of last Sunday's win over Minnesota. He returned after the break and finished with 10 catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Kelce was listed as “did not participate” on Monday's estimated injury report, but he was back on the field Tuesday.

The Chiefs had 10 players catch a pass against the Vikings, and that is becoming the norm as they break in their young wide receivers while getting contributions from tight end Noah Gray and help out of the backfield. They have had at least 10 players catch a pass in four of their five games; they had a mere eight in their win over the Jets.

“When someone like Travis has 10 catches, teams know that and put plans together to stop them,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said, “but we have great wide receivers and they all have different strengths, and our job as coaches is to put them in certain spots where they can use their strengths.”

The Broncos haven't had problems getting off to fast starts, scoring 27 points on their five opening possessions. That trails only unbeaten San Francisco, which has scored 31. But it also means Denver has largely struggled in crunch time. They were outscored 23-8 by the Jets in the second half last week, and have been outscored 93-52 in the second half of games this season.

Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones is under pressure to perform, given he will be a free agent after failing to secure a long-term deal after a holdout that stretched into Week 1. But the All-Pro has had at least one sack each of the past four weeks, which is tied with Derrick Thomas for the most consecutive games to start a season in franchise history.

Most teams worry about Mahomes dicing up their secondary, but the Broncos are trying to fix their run defense heading into Thursday night. The Jets’ Breece Hall ran for 177 yards against them last week, further cementing their place as last in the league against the run.

Hutchinson Community College sophomore cross country runner&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wxc/2023-24/bios/larson_serenity_9jw1">Serenity Larson</a>&nbsp;was named the NJCAA Division I Cross Country Women's Runner of the Week on Wednesday.

Larson, a sophomore from Dodge City, led the No. 7-ranked Blue Dragon women to a third-place finish on Saturday at the Carol Swenson Invitational in McPherson.

Larson ran a time of 18:45.96, her fourth sub-19 minute performance at 5,000 meters and third-fastest time in her Blue Dragon career.

She was the top junior college runner in a race that had NJCAA, NAIA and NCAA runners.

The Blue Dragon sophomore had her fifth career Top five finish in her Hutchinson career.

Last season, Larson was an NJCAA third-team All-American after a 12th-place finish at the NJCAA Championship. She owns the Blue Dragon women's cross country 5K record of 18:12.1 set at the 2022 Chili Pepper Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The attempt was Burger's first field goal try of the season after serving as the kickoff specialist for the Dragons.

Burger's 50-yarder surpassed the old record of 48 by Sebastian Garcia in 2018.

The redshirt freshman from Perth, Australia had nine kickoffs on Saturday, three going for touchbacks. His directional kicking kept the average Dodge City starting field position at its own 22 yard line.

Burger is the fourth Blue Dragon to earn NJCAA National weekly honors, the third as the Special Teams Player of the Week.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas announced Wednesday that an independent panel has downgraded five Level I violations lodged by the NCAA against the men’s basketball program and Jayhawks coach Bill Self, ending a years-long saga by giving KU three years of probation and no other penalties.

The Jayhawks announced the details shortly before a scheduled news conference with panel officials.

The school had appealed the violations, which sprung from a 2017 investigation into college basketball corruption, through the Independent Accountability Review Process that was created to handle complex cases. Among the NCAA charges was a lack of institutional control and an allegation that Self failed in his responsibility to keep the program in compliance.

The case hinged on whether representatives of the apparel company Adidas were considered boosters — the school contends they were not — when two of them arranged payments to prospective recruits. The school never disputed that the payments were made, only that it had any knowledge of the inducements.

The school made its case during a hearing in April, and the independent panel ultimately decided that the case was merely a Level II infractions case. The panel also said that Self, who served a school-imposed four-game suspension last season, should be charged with a Level II violation and that the Hall of Fame coach would serve no additional penalties.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas redshirt-sophomore running back Daniel Hishaw Jr. is one of 50 college football student-athletes currently under consideration for the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year Award.

The midseason Watch List was announced Wednesday by College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) in association with The Associated Press and the Fiesta Bowl Organization.

Hishaw was originally on the preseason list for the award after rushing for 262 yards and five touchdowns in five games last season before suffering a season-ending hip injury. He had at least 50 rushing yards in each of the first four games and averaged 6.0 yards per carry for the season.

The Moore, Oklahoma, native has continued his exceptional pace during his redshirt-sophomore season at Kansas. Hishaw is second on the team with 413 rushing yards on 60 carries, including six touchdowns scored through the first half of the 2023 season. He’s coming off the most productive game of his career as he carried the ball 19 times for 134 yards and two touchdowns Saturday against UCF.

Through six games, Hishaw is tied for the team lead with six rushing touchdowns, which also leads the Big 12, and he’s second in the league and No. 12 nationally averaging 6.9 yards per carry. He’s a key part of KU’s rushing offense, which is second in the Big 12 and No. 6 in FBS football with an average of 232.3 yards per game.

Hishaw is one of 50 student-athletes representing 43 different schools on the updated Watch List and he’s one of seven players from the Big 12 remaining on the list.

Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes from all divisions of college football for overcoming injury, illness, or other circumstances. At the conclusion of each season, in a vote by a panel of college football writers, editors, and sports information directors, three college football student-athletes are honored as Comeback Player of the Year Award winners at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.

(AP) — The Kansas men's basketball program was put on probation and ordered to take down its 2018 Final Four banner but escaped a postseason ban Wednesday, when an independent panel created by the NCAA to handle complex cases downgraded five Level I violations lodged against the Jayhawks.

The violations stem from a 2017 federal investigation into college basketball corruption, and hinged on whether representatives of the apparel company Adidas were considered boosters when two of them arranged payments to prospective recruits.

Kansas officials never disputed that payments were made, only that they had no knowledge of them, and they appealed the violations through the Independent Accountability Resolution Process. Their hearing took place in April and the ruling was announced less than a month before the start of the college basketball season in which the powerhouse Jayhawks will be a national championship contender.

“Today’s decision by the Independent Resolution Panel confirms what we’ve said since the beginning: the major infractions of which we were accused were unfounded,” Kansas Chancellor Douglas Girod and athletic director Travis Goff said in a statement. “Most importantly, the panel decision unequivocally confirms our coaches were not involved in – or had knowledge of – payments to student-athletes."

The panel concluded the apparel company’s consultant “was a representative of Kansas’ athletics interests” beginning in August 2017, resulting in multiple Level II and Level III violations. But it found “no credible and persuasive information” to suggest that Kansas officials failed to cooperate, lacked institutional control or failed to monitor its men’s basketball program.

Among the penalties, the 2018 Final Four banner was ordered to be removed from Allen Fieldhouse, and any wins involving forward Silvio De Sousa — identified as “student-athlete No. 1” and central to the case — would be stripped from all records. The school also was given a variety of recruiting restrictions, which add to penalties that were self-imposed last year.

The panel made a point to avoid giving Kansas a postseason ban, though. The Jayhawks, led by Michigan transfer Hunter Dickinson and with several key players returning, is expected to be preseason No. 1 when the AP poll is released next week.

"We have the penalties we’ve imposed, but we don’t want that to be a reflection on current student-athletes, or impose any limitations on current student-athletes,” said Christina Guerola Sarchio, the chief member for the Independent Resolution Panel hearing the case, said on a Zoom meeting to discuss the case.

Kansas won the 2022 national title while going through the IARP process. That championship is not affected.

The case against Kansas, which included minor infractions involving its football program, was the final one pending for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-southern-california-trojans-7e33fa9aa3436a92d6cf35fd3fab8681">soon-to-be disbanded IARP</a>&nbsp;after it sanctioned former LSU and current McNeese State men’s basketball coach Will Wade in June.

Kansas officials&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-college-basketball-mens-c7ece9b0614c9170849088f5391f55d3">suspended Self and top assistant Kurtis Townsend</a>&nbsp;for the first four games of last season, along with imposing several recruiting restrictions, potentially mitigating any penalties that IARP would hand down.

Along with barring the two coaches from off-campus recruiting last summer, the school self-reduced the number of official visits that it would allow during the 2023-24 academic year, reduced the total number of scholarships by three over a three-year span and reduced the number of recruiting days during the current year by 13 days.

“The NCAA membership has acknowledged the significance of these self-imposed penalties,” Sarchio said.

The case against Kansas stemmed from an FBI investigation that ensnared several schools, including Auburn, Arizona, LSU,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-basketball-mens-college-louisville-c33326925a9e27a742e05f0abc668f80">Louisville</a>&nbsp;and North Carolina State, and led to convictions of shoe company executives, a middleman and several assistant coaches.

Kansas initially was charged by the NCAA with five Level I violations, which are considered the most severe, including a charge of lack of institutional control and an allegation that Self had failed to keep the program in compliance.

Auburn received four years of probation through a traditional NCAA infractions process for a similar case, but Kansas joined others in appealing through the IARP, which was among the proposals made by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 2018 to reform the sport. The panel was designed to work outside the purview of the NCAA and handle complex cases.

The IARP has been slow, though, and former NCAA President Mark Emmert acknowledged last year that the process was taking “way too long.” That is part of the reason the panel will be eliminated now that the Kansas case has been completed as the NCAA attempts to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-basketball-122d93498e4876995ca842b191bda6dd">modernize its infractions process</a>&nbsp;and make it move more efficiently.

In the meantime, many alleged infractions from the 2017 investigation would no longer be against the rules. Name, image and likeness guidelines allow NCAA athletes in all sports to earn money from endorsements and other off-the-field business arrangements.

“That has been something we have been very conscientious about, in terms of the allegations of this case spanning an incredibly long time, and the resolution to get to where we are today took a number of months and years,” Sarchio said. “This case was not dormant. There was activity going on. It took this long to render a decision because it was an incredibly thorough record.”

The panel also has been criticized for inconsistent penalties. Arizona, LSU, Louisville and North Carolina State were given minor penalties and no postseason ban, while Oklahoma State was barred from postseason play for relatively minor violations.

Sarchio said that all of those cases were considered in rendering judgment in the Kansas case.

“What we looked at was the conduct, the fact that there were no Level I findings — there were some Level II and Level III — and compared to what the self-imposed penalties were,” she said. “That led us to reach the conclusion that we disclosed today.”

Kelley started a fundraising campaign on Retton’s behalf for medical expenses. Kelley wrote that Retton does not currently have medical insurance.

Diamondbacks jump all over another Dodgers starter and beat LA 4-2 for a 2-0 lead in NLDS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and the surprising Arizona Diamondbacks made quick work of another Dodgers starter, beating Los Angeles 4-2 behind Zac Gallen for a 2-0 lead in their NL Division Series. The young Diamondbacks, who earned the final National League wild card despite losing their last four regular-season games, improved to 4-0 in these playoffs — all on the road against division winners. They'll try for a stunning sweep of the 100-win Dodgers when the best-of-five series shifts to Arizona for Game 3 on Wednesday. Gallen allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings for his second win of the postseason. Gurriel laced an RBI single to cap a three-run first, and the Diamondbacks chased rookie starter Bobby Miller in the second.

GENEVA (AP) — Saudi Arabia has formally informed FIFA of its wish to host the men's World Cup in 2034 in a bidding contest that increasingly looks designed for the oil-rich kingdom to win. The Saudi Arabian soccer federation says it "submitted a letter of intent and signed declaration to FIFA to bid" in a vote open only to Asian and Oceania countries. FIFA fast-tracked starting the 2034 contest last week after also agreeing to accept only one candidate for the 2030 World Cup. That unprecedented six-nation, three-continent co-hosting plan in Europe, Africa and South America removed those continents from bidding to get back-to-back tournaments.

Brett Favre's deposition in Mississippi's welfare scandal is rescheduled for December

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The deposition in the civil lawsuit against retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre in connection with Mississippi's welfare scandal has been pushed back at the request of the athlete's attorneys. A court document filed Friday shows the hearing has been rescheduled from Oct. 26 to Dec. 11 based on a request by Favre's lawyers. Favre is set to answer questions under oath about the misspending of $77 million of federal welfare money in Mississippi, where public funds intended to help some of the nation's poorest people were allegedly used to fund pet projects he and other well-connected people supported. Favre has denied wrongdoing, sued the state auditor who investigated the misspending for defamation and says he paid back misspent welfare funds.

The NFL's ongoing push for worldwide exposure got another boost when organizers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics delivered a proposal to put flag football on the program when the Summer Games return to the United States for the first time in 32 years. The International Olympic Committee will vote on the proposal at meetings in India that begin later this week. Also on the LA proposal were baseball and softball, which have been bouncing on and off the program for decades; lacrosse; squash; and cricket. Flag football involves 5-on-5 action in which players tackle their opponents by stripping flags off belts worn by all players. It is viewed as a less-violent, faster-paced version of the game that has captured imaginations in the U.S. for decades.

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit desperately hopes to snap its seven-year playoff drought and becomes part of an NHL trend. The Nashville Predators and Pittsburgh Penguins are, too. The Vegas Golden Knights were one of those teams last and they won the Stanley Cup in their sixth season, a year after not making it to the postseason for the first time. Detroit doesn't suddenly seem like a title contender, but it should be able to compete after making moves.

NEWTON – Shooting 4-over par in the opening round of the Grier Jones/Shocker Invitational on Monday at Sand Creek Station, the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team put together their best round of the fall season.

Led by career-low rounds of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/ross_louis_dfpl">Louis Ross</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/razinskas_david_7wz3">David Razinskas</a>, the Blue Dragons posted a 9-under 279 in the afternoon round to pull into a seventh-place tie with LaSalle University at 5-under 571.

The final round will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday at Sand Creek Station.

All four Blue Dragon golfers whose scores counted in the second-round shot under par.

After shooting a career-low 69 in the morning round, Ross shot one-stroke better in the afternoon round with a 4-under 68. Ross had five birdies and just one bogey in the second round. Ross head five birdies and two bogeys in the opening round.

Ross is the only Blue Dragon in the Top 10 through two rounds. He is tied for ninth at 7-under 137.

Razinskas had a complete turnaround on Monday. After shooting a 79 in the opening round, Razinskas rode the wave of an eagle in the par-4 fifth hole to shoot a 3-under 69. Razinskas' round consisted of the eagle, four birdies and three bogeys.

Razinskas is tied for 61st at 4-over 148.

The Blue Dragons also counted 1-under 71s in the second round from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/box_charlie_jgcb">Charlie Box</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/galvin_louis_4f6t">Louis Galvin</a>. The score not counted in the 279 was an even-par 72 of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/blowers_micah_7u95">Micah Blowers</a>.

Box had a pair of under-par rounds shooting 70 in the opening round and 71 in the second round. Box is tied for 17th at 3-under 141.

 </figure>Hutchinson CC Sports InformationNEWTON – Shooting 4-over par in the opening round of the Grier Jones/Shocker Invitational on Monday at Sand Creek Station, the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's golf team put together their best round of the fall season.Led by career-low rounds of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/ross_louis_dfpl">Louis Ross</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2023-24/bios/razinskas_david_7wz3">David Razinskas</a>, the Blue Dragons posted a 9-under 279 in the afternoon round to pull into a seventh-place tie with LaSalle University at 5-under 571.The final round will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday at Sand Creek Station.All four Blue Dragon golfers whose scores counted in the second-round shot under par.After shooting a career-low 69 in the morning round, Ross shot one-stroke better in the afternoon round with a 4-under 68. Ross had five birdies and just one bogey in the second round. Ross head five birdies and two bogeys in the opening round.Ross is the only Blue Dragon in the Top 10 through two rounds. He is tied for ninth at 7-under 137.Razinskas had a complete turnaround on Monday. After shooting a 79 in the opening round, Razinskas rode the wave of an eagle in the par-4 fifth hole to shoot a 3-under 69. ⛳ Blue Dragon Golfers post season-low round at WSU

The Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team remained No. 10 in the latest NJCAA Division I Rankings, which were released on Monday.

The Blue Dragons (11-1-3 overall, 8-1-3 KJCCC) went 2-0 last week with a 2-1 victory over Dodge City at home and a 1-0 road victory at then-No. 18 Butler.

Hutchinson is in the midst of their second stretch of games this season where it plays four ranked opponents in a five-game span. This week the Blue Dragons play host to unranked Coffeyville and then travels to No. 7 Barton in a battle between the top two teams in the Jayhawk Conference.

The Blue Dragons and Barton are two of four Jayhawk Conference teams ranked in this week's poll. Kansas City is No. 14 and Cowley is No. 16 this week. Those teams are Hutchinson's next two opponents after Saturday's game against Barton. Butler is receiving votes this week.

Iowa Western remains atop the national rankings and has been there every week this season. No. 2 Seminole State and No. 3 Tyler swap spots from last week. Daytona State is No. 4 and Salt Lake is No. 5

The Blue Dragons have now been ranked in 12 consecutive ranking periods.

Starting a season 6-0 for the eighth time in program history, the Hutchinson Community College football team maintained its hold on the No. 1 spot in the latest NJCAA Division I rankings, which were released on Monday.

The top-ranked Blue Dragons defeated then-No. 11 Dodge City 46-10 on Saturday at Gowans Stadium to take sole possession of first place in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchinson has a bye week this Saturday and will play host to Garden City on Saturday, October 21 at Gowans Stadium.

For the sixth-straight week, the Blue Dragons received 9 of 10 first-place votes and leads No. 2 Iowa Western 149-141. Iowa Western defeated then-No. 5 Snow 20-13 on Saturday in Ephraim, Utah.

No. 3 Iowa Central rallied to defeat Coffeyville last weekend in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Mississippi Golf Coast is No. 4 and Kilgore is now. No. 5
