Montgomery shuts out Astros, Taveras homers as Rangers get 2-0 win in Game 1 of ALCS

HOUSTON (AP) — Jordan Montgomery shut down the Houston Astros and Leody Taveras homered as the Texas Rangers did just enough against Justin Verlander to get a 2-0 win in the opener of the AL Championship Series Sunday night. Montgomery threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings and Taveras made it 2-0 with his solo homer in the fifth inning. Rookie Evan Carter helped in the win, too. The 21-year-old doubled and scored in the second and made two nifty defensive plays. The Rangers, who are in the ALCS for the first time since back-to-back appearances in 2010-11, improved to 6-0 this postseason after sweeping the Rays in the Wild Card Series and the Orioles in the ALDS.

Hall runs for a TD after Adams' INT and Jets shock Eagles 20-14 to send Philly to its first loss

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Breece Hall ran for an 8-yard touchdown with 1:46 remaining, one play after Tony Adams intercepted Jalen Hurts, and the New York Jets held on to shock the previously undefeated Philadelphia Eagles 20-14 for their first win against them. The Jets appeared on their way to falling to 0-13 in their history against the Eagles, but Hurts' third interception of the game — and the fourth turnover by Philadelphia — was returned by Adams 45 yards to put New York into immediate scoring position. Hall's run shook MetLife Stadium as the Jets fans went wild and Zach Wilson connected with Randall Cobb on a 2-point conversion. The defense shut down the Eagles one more time to seal the win.

Browns stun 49ers 19-17, hand San Francisco its first loss and QB Brock Purdy his first as starter

CLEVELAND (AP) — Rookie Jake Moody missed a 41-yard field goal with six seconds left as San Francisco was stunned 19-17 by the Cleveland Browns, who ended the 49ers' regular-season winning streak at 15 and handed quarterback Brock Purdy his first loss as an NFL starter. Dustin Hopkins kicked four field goals — the last with 1:40 left — for the Browns, who pulled off the upset without quarterback Deshaun Watson. He missed his second straight game with a bruised right shoulder. P.J. Walker came off Cleveland's practice squad and outplayed Purdy, who had won his first 10 starts. The 23-year-old drove the 49ers into field-goal range, but Moody was wide right on his attempt.

AP Top 25: Washington into top 5 for 1st time in 6 years. Air Force ranked for 1st time since 2019

Washington has moved up to No. 5 in The Associated Press college football poll, the Huskies' best ranking in six years, after a thrilling victory against Oregon. And unbeaten Air Force is ranked for the first time since 2019. The top four teams in the country were unchanged after No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Florida State all won Saturday in blowout fashion. Washington got two first-place votes and jumped two spots past No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 7 Penn State. That gave the Huskies their best ranking since reaching No. 5 in October 2017.

Jones and Stewart help Liberty avoid sweep, take Game 3 of WNBA Finals, beat Aces 87-73

NEW YORK (AP) — Jonquel Jones scored 27 points and Breanna Stewart added 20 to help the New York Liberty beat the Las Vegas Aces 87-73 and force a Game 4 of the WNBA Finals. New York struggled in the first two games against the Aces in Las Vegas, but the Liberty found their shooting touch in Game 3 behind Jones, who hit four of the team's 13 3-pointers. This was the Liberty's first win in the WNBA Finals since 1999. The Aces are up 2-1 in the best-of-five series. Game 4 is Wednesday night in New York. Kelsey Plum scored 29 points and A'ja Wilson added 16 for the Aces.

Zack Wheeler blossoms into ace for Phillies, gets Game 1 start against Arizona in NLCS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Wheeler is the Philadelphia Phillies' most dependable starter as he gets set for Game 1 of the NL Championship Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. He signed a $118 million, five-year contract ahead of the 2020 season. Wheeler has topped 200 innings once, 200 strikeouts twice and won a pair of playoff games over that span. The Diamondbacks send out 17-game winner Zac Gallen for the Game 1 start. Merrill Kelly, a 12-game winner who tossed 6 1/3 shutout innings in an NLDS win over the Dodgers, goes in Game 2. Late-season surprise Brandon Pfaadt is in line for the Game 3 start.

Assistant coach Alyssa Nakken interviews for Giants manager position

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Alyssa Nakken, who became the first woman to coach on the field in a major league game when she worked first base for San Francisco in April 2022, has interviewed for the Giants managerial vacancy. President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi confirmed Sunday night that Nakken had gone through a first-round interview last week. The 33-year-old Nakken, a softball star at Sacramento State from 2009-2012, has been a coach on the Giants staff since Kapler hired her in January 2020.

Kyle Larson earns spot in NASCAR's championship race with victory at Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Kyle Larson edged Christopher Bell at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway finish line to become the first driver locked into NASCAR's championship race. The 2021 Cup champion earned the first of four spots in the Nov. 5 title-deciding finale with his win Sunday. A win in any of the three playoff races this round earns an automatic berth into the championship finale. The remaining slots are filled based on the points standings. Bell, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney and Christopher Buescher are the four drivers below the cutline. The win capped a week for Larson in which he began his preparations for next year's Indianapolis 500. Larson plans to run both the Indy 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 next May and on Thursday completed the rookie orientation program at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Clark's triple-double highlights game at Kinnick. Women's basketball record crowd of 55,646 shows up

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A total of 55,646 fans turned out in Iowa City for the "Crossover at Kinnick" women's basketball exhibition between DePaul and Iowa. Returning national player of the year Caitlin Clark had a triple-double of 34 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Iowa coach Lisa Bluder came up with the idea to play an outdoor game in the football stadium with the hope of setting an all-time women's basketball attendance record. The crowd nearly the doubled the previous record of 29,619 set by Connecticut and Oklahoma in the 2002 NCAA championship game at San Antonio's Alamodome.

Tom Kim wins in Las Vegas for the 2nd time in the same PGA Tour season

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Tom Kim is a winner in Las Vegas again. It was a wild finish in the Shriners Children's Open. At one point there was a six-way tie for the lead with 12 players separated by one shot. Kim emerged with a 66 to defeat Adam Hadwin by one shot. It's his third PGA Tour title at age 21. He's the youngest to do that since Tiger Woods. Kim also joins Byron Nelson in 1944 as the only players to win the same event twice in one year. That's because the PGA Tour is going to a calendar season in 2024.

GREAT BEND –&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/edwards_kaitlyn_56gt">Kaitlyn Edwards</a>&nbsp;scored a pair of goals, but the No. 10 Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team fell in a battle for first place in the Jayhawk Conference and an NJCAA Top 10 national matchup with No. 7 Barton on Sunday at Cougar Field.

The Blue Dragons had a five-game winning streak snapped after a 3-2 loss to the Cougars.

Hutchinson falls to 12-2-3 overall and 9-2-3 (30 points) in the Jayhawk Conference. The Cougars surpass the Blue Dragons into first place with 32 points at 10-1-2 overall and in league play. The Blue Dragons play host to No. 16 Kansas City at 6 p.m. on Wednesday for Sophomore Night at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons weren't able to generate a lot of offense, producing only five shots taken. Twice the Dragons found themselves down by two goals.

Hutchinson found success on set pieces, converting on 2 of 6 corner kicks.

The first came late in the first half trailing 2-0,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/hoffman_emma_5iyj">Emma Hoffman</a>&nbsp;delivered a kick into the box that Edwards headed in for Hutchinson's first goal of the game and 11th of the season with 2:32 to play in the first half.

Barton took a 3-1 lead on a free kick in the 55th minute. The Blue Dragons countered just 1 minute, 33 seconds later when&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/delgado_adriana_03x3">Adriana Delgado</a>'s corner kick was headed in by Edwards to cut the Barton lead to 3-2 with 33:33 to play in the second half.

After the goal, Hutchinson had just one more shot on goal from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/hoy_destiny_838y">Destiny Hoy</a>. The Dragons weren't able to convert on a corner kick with 28:45 to play.

Edwards had her third two-goal game of the season. Hoffman and Delgado each had their sixth assists of the season.

The Blue Dragons gave up multiple goals for the first time this season. Barton took 10 shots.

Blue Dragon freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/slothower_karsyn_3puo">Karsyn Slothower</a>&nbsp;had three saves.

The teams split one-goal victories this season. Hutchinson defeated Barton 1-0 on September 13 in Hutchinson.

⚽ Blue Dragons fall in top 10 battle to Barton

HOUSTON, Tx (AP) After winning the AL Championship Series opener, Texas will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound in Game 2 on Monday against Houston's Framber Valdez.

Zack Wheeler will be on the mound when Philadelphia opens the NL Championship Series against Arizona on Monday night.

Jonah Heim hit an RBI single in the second and Leody Taveras homered in the fifth. Evan Carter, at 21 the youngest player in the matchup, made a pair of sparkling catches in left field.

“Oh, my gosh. This is so much fun,” Carter said. “That’s just all I think about. Where else would I want to be. This is awesome. I’m just trying to keep my feet grounded and just keep rolling with this team . It’s been a lot of fun.”

Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson had a night to remember in his first Big 12 game.

The true freshman rushed for five touchdowns against Texas Tech on Saturday, the most in the Football Bowl Subdivision since Israel Abanikanda of Pittsburgh had six against Virginia Tech on Oct. 8, 2022.

Johnson, who ran 12 times for 91 yards, tied the school record for TDs rushing set by Jonathan Beasley in 2000 and tied by Collin Klein in 2011.

Johnson entered the game late in the first quarter and ran for TDs of 2, 5, 30, 11 and 3 yards in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-state-texas-tech-college-football-f65bd758f60040e9c28ffd20d115bbaa">38-21 win in Lubbock, Texas</a>. Johnson shared snaps with the starter, Will Howard, in the first half and took all the snaps in the second half.

Notre Dame safety Xavier Watts filled up the statistics sheet&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/notre-dame-usc-caleb-williams-56b3c471450a516d6ca731b695c94453">against Southern California</a>&nbsp;like few defensive players.

He became the second player since at least 2000, according to Sportradar, to have two interceptions, a fumble return for a touchdown and a forced fumble. He also had seven tackles and a pass breakup in the 48-20 win.

The last player with two picks, fumble return TD and forced fumble was Kent State’s Demetrius Monday, who did it in a 10-7 loss to Minnesota on Sept. 19, 2015.

Houston has had a 100-yard kick return three straight years after Matthew Golden went the distance in the first quarter of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/west-virginia-houston-college-football-c9e35d03f380053ffcd85e7c0d8196d9">41-39 win over West Virginia</a>. Golden is the only player in the country with two kick returns for a TD this season. He had a 98-yarder against TCU on Sept. 16.

Stanford's Elic Ayomanor had 294 yards on 13 catches — all in the second half and overtime — in the Cardinal's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/colorado-stanford-deion-sanders-faf54480cba04371c2de5e6533e419ad">46-43 double-overtime win</a>&nbsp;over Colorado.

The yards receiving total was the highest in the FBS since Jaxon Smith-Njigba of Ohio State had 347 on 15 catches against Utah in the 2022 Rose Bowl.

Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr. of Virginia Tech matched the national season high for sacks with four&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virginia-tech-wake-forest-atlantic-coast-conference-3d497302901d0e32e6de2822fdd4c34d">against Wake Forest</a>. He has seven for the season, tied for fifth nationally.

Kyle Kennard of Georgia Tech had the first four-sack game of the season, also against Wake Forest, on Sept. 23.

Garrett Cora of Division III Franklin (Indiana) set the NCAA all-division single-game season high for rushing yards with 318 and four touchdowns in a 35-21 win over Defiance (Ohio).

PARK HILLS, Missouri – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team fell in four sets to Missouri State University-West Plains to close out the Mineral Area College Tournament on Saturday at Sechrest Gym.

The Blue Dragons finished the tournament 2-2 after an 18-25, 17-25, 25-19, 23-25 loss to the Grizzlies.

The Blue Dragons are now 20-11 overall and will return to conference play on Wednesday with a road trip to play at Colby.

Sophomore middle blocker&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/dean_anna_0g77">Anna Dean</a>&nbsp;had a career-high 16 kills to lead the Blue Dragons. She added five total blocks and an ace serve to lead Hutchinson.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/golden_taniya_wjj0">Taniya Golden</a>&nbsp;finished with eight kills and eighth dogs. Setter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/ravenhani_giovanna_k9db">Giovanna Ravanhani</a>&nbsp;was next with five kills.

Ravanhani had 28 assists to power the Dragon offense. Freshman liberal&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/rollandini_isabella_ircy">Isabella Rollandini</a>&nbsp;had 12 digs and three service aces. Set 1: West Plains took immediate charge of the Blue Dragons by jumping out to an 11-2 lead. That deficit drew to 13-4, 15-15 and 19-6 before the Dragons started to find some rhythm. A Golden ace pulled the Dragons within 22-11. Then at 24-11, the Blue Dragons fought off six-straight set points, pulling within 24-18 on a Dean kill. The Dragons dropped the opener 25-18.

Set 2: The second set was the same story as West Plains built an immediate 12-3 lead. Back-to-back Dean kills pulled the Dragons with 13-7, but the Grizzlies went on a 5-0 run to pull away. Down 23-12, the Dragons surged with a 5-1 run, but West Plains closed the 25-17 win on the third set point.

Set 3: Trailing 6-5, the Blue Dragon offenses caught fire with an 8-1 run that capped by back-to-back Ravanhani kills and a Dean solo block for a 13-7 lead. The lead drew to 18-10 after a Golden kill.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/long_ashlyn_ig40">Ashlyn Long</a>&nbsp;had a kill for a 21-13 lead. West Plains scored three in a row to pull within five, but a Ravanhani kill stopped that advantage. A Dean/Ravanhani block made it 24-16. Courtesy of the NJCAA Charlotte, NC -&nbsp;ESPN and the NJCAA have announced national championship content that will now stream on ESPN+ starting with the fall 2023 national championships.&nbsp;

Beginning with the 2023-24 academic year, ESPN+ will exclusively stream eight NJCAA football games that include the NJCAA DI Football Playoffs and NJCAA DIII Football National Championship, the NJCAA DI Men's Soccer Championship semifinals and final, NJCAA DI Women's Soccer Championship semifinal and final, NJCAA DI Volleyball Championship placing matches and final, NJCAA DI Men's Basketball Championship tournament, NJCAA DI Women's Basketball Championship tournament, NJCAA DI Baseball World Series, and NJCAA DI Softball World Series beginning with the quarterfinals and second round of the elimination bracket.

"Following a year of unprecedented exposure for the NJCAA, we are excited for the opportunity to showcase more championship events on ESPN+", stated Dr. Christopher Parker, NJCAA President &amp; CEO.&nbsp; "By expanding the sports streamed on ESPN+, it will create a more well-rounded awareness for student-athletes across the association."

The agreement will still feature nationally televised championship games for NJCAA Division I Football, Division I Men's Basketball, and Division I Women's Basketball that will air on ESPNU.&nbsp; The 2023 NJCAA DI Football Championship will air on ESPNU at 8:00 PM ET / 7:00 PM CT on December 13, 2023.

(AP) — Carson Beck threw for 261 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score as top-ranked Georgia shook off both an early kickoff and losing star tight end Brock Bowers to a left foot injury before halftime in beating Vanderbilt 37-20 Saturday. Georgia extended its school record and longest active FBS winning streak to 24 consecutive games. Bowers hurt his left foot midway through the second quarter. IOC president Thomas Bach has been urged by its members to change Olympic rules on term limits and seek four more years as president. Bach's presidency is due to end in 2025. The 12-year maximum was agreed in anti-corruption reforms passed after the Salt Lake City bid scandal broke in the 1990s. Several of the IOC's 99 members cited the recent years of global crises in suggesting they needed more of Bach's leadership that started in 2013. Bach says the praise went "straight to my heart" but cautioned he is loyal to the Olympic rule book that enforces term limits.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston dominated Texas during the regular season, winning nine of 13 matchups. Now the Rangers get another chance at the Astros when they meet for the first time in the playoffs in a Texas-sized showdown in AL Championship Series with a trip to the World Series on the line starting Sunday night in Houston. The Astros completed the regular season matchup against the Rangers with a three-game walloping at the beginning of September. Houston clubbed 16 homers to sweep that series by a combined score of 39-10. But despite the lopsided results this season, both teams say they'll start with a clean slate for this series.

Iowa-DePaul women's outdoor basketball game at Kinnick could draw over 50,000 fans, world record

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — High-scoring Iowa star Caitlin Clark doesn't expect to have much shooting touch Sunday when the Hawkeyes play DePaul in an outdoor exhibition at Kinnick Stadium. She says she probably will shoot a couple air balls because of wind and depth perception issues in a big stadium. More than 50,000 tickets have been sold for the event at the 69,000-seat stadium. Proceeds benefit the university's Stead Family Children's Hospital. The forecast calls for temperatures in the low 50s, cloudy skies and north wind at 10-20 mph. There is only a slight chance of rain.

DT Teair Tart inactive for Titans game against Ravens in London

LONDON (AP) — Titans defensive tackle Teair Tart (toe) will miss his second straight game when Tennessee plays the Baltimore Ravens at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Tart was inactive after sitting out last week's loss to Indianapolis. The Colts rushed for 193 yards. Defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth who was signed from the practice squad on Saturday was active. Center Aaron Brewer (neck) was also active after being listed as questionable this week. Ravens running back Keaton Mitchell who was activated from injured reserve on Saturday was set to make his NFL debut.

Angel Yin wins LPGA Shanghai tournament for maiden tour title

SHANGHAI (AP) — American Solheim Cup player Angel Yin defeated top-ranked Lilia Vu on the first playoff hole to win the LPGA Shanghai tournament for her first tour win. Both Yin and Vu finished at 14-under 274 on the Qizhong Garden Golf Club course forcing a playoff where Yin made a birdie at the par-4 18th, after Vu had narrowly missed her 20-foot birdie putt. It was 25-year-old Yin's first victory in her 159th start. Five players finished in a tie for third at 13-under: South Korea's Choi Hye-jin who shot a 64, Thai pair Pavarisa Yoktuan (70) and Ariya Jutanugarn (69), Yu Liu (68) and Esther Henseleit (68).

F1 governing body FIA to review Hamilton's actions after crossing track at Qatar GP

Formula One's governing body is reviewing a penalty given to seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton for crossing the track after climbing out of his car following a first-lap collision at last Sunday's Qatar Grand Prix. Hamilton tangled with his Mercedes teammate George Russell after making a flying start and went spinning off into the gravel trap when trying to overtake him. He jumped straight out of the cockpit and immediately crossed the circuit. Following a stewards' investigation he was issued a reprimand and fined 50,000 euros ($52,560), with 25,000 euros ($26,280) suspended pending any further breach. But given his role model status within the series and the danger his actions represented governing body FIA feels this may not have been enough.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Freshman quarterback Avery Johnson ran for five touchdowns, a first in FBS this season, while sharing time with starter Will Howard, and Kansas State beat Texas Tech 38-21 on Saturday night.

Johnson finished with 91 yards rushing as the Wildcats (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) bounced back from a surprising loss at Oklahoma State with an eighth consecutive victory in the series for the defending Big 12 champions.

Jake Strong led a 99-yard drive to the only lead for Texas Tech (3-4, 2-2) in his debut in the third quarter after replacing injured starter Behren Morton. But the freshman threw three interceptions after the Wildcats had gone back in front.

Morton, who was starting because of the third long-term injury in as many seasons to Tyler Shough, was slow to get up several times in the first half and was ruled out after the break because of an undisclosed injury.

Strong's second series started at the Texas Tech 1-yard line, but his 13-yard pass got the drive going.

Strong ran 54 yards to set up an 8-yard scoring pass on third down, when he lofted a pass just as he was hit hard in the pocket and Jerand Bradley got a foot down as he fell out the back of the end zone to give the Red Raiders a 21-17 lead.

Johnson, whose only other touchdown came in a blowout of Southeast Missouri State in the opener, replaced Howard on the third series and scored on a 2-yard run for a 10-0 lead.

Howard, a senior closing in on 30 career games, returned several times in the first half, but it was Johnson's show after the break.

His 30-yard run put Kansas State back in front for good at 24-21, and Johnson's 11-yard score put the Wildcats up 10 the first play after VJ Payne's 17-yard return of Strong's first interception.

After Kobe Savage corralled Strong's third interception in the end zone, Johnson led an 80-yard drive to the game-sealing score, a 3-yard run for his fifth TD.

Treshaun Ward had 118 yards rushing as the Wildcats finished with 273 yards on the ground, the most allowed by Texas Tech this season.

Tahj Brooks ran for 98 yards and a touchdown for Texas Tech, and Morton scored on a 1-yard plunge.

Kansas State: The Wildcats appeared to have a chance for a three-score lead just before halftime when linebacker Jake Clifton forced a fumble on a catch by Cam’Ron Valdez and Kansas State recovered inside the Texas Tech 25. But Clifton made helmet-to-helmet contact with Valdez and was ejected for targeting. Texas Tech then drove for a touchdown and a 17-14 halftime deficit.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders just can't seem to escape injuries at quarterback. Shough had played the deepest into the season of the Oregon transfer's three years in Lubbock before breaking a leg. Now the question is how soon Morton might return, if at all. This could be a serious test of the QB depth chart.

Kansas State: TCU at home next Saturday in a rematch of last year's Big 12 championship game, when the Wildcats handed the Horned Frogs their first loss of the season.

Texas Tech: at BYU next Saturday in the second meeting between the schools. The other was in 1940.

🏈 Johnson 5 rushing TDs lift Kansas State past Texas Tech

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Ollie Gordon II gained 284 yards from scrimmage and scored two touchdowns to help Oklahoma State defeat No. 23 Kansas 39-32 on Saturday.

Gordon ran for a career-high 168 yards and caught six passes for a career-best 116. He became the first Oklahoma State player since Gerald Hudson in 1989 to have at least 100 yards rushing and receiving in a game.

Alan Bowman passed for 336 yards and two touchdowns, Rashod Owens had career highs of nine catches and 112 yards and Brennan Presley caught a touchdown pass and ran for the go-ahead score with 2:32 remaining for Oklahoma State (4-2, 2-1 Big 12). The Cowboys gained 554 yards to win their second straight after upsetting Kansas State last Friday.

Kansas (5-2, 2-2) was without quarterback Jalon Daniels for the third straight game because of a back injury. Jason Bean stepped in and passed for career highs of 410 yards and five touchdowns, but he threw two interceptions.

On the game's opening drive, Gordon caught a 50-yard pass from Bowman, then caught a short pass from Bowman and took it 17 yards to the end zone. On the next drive, Bowman found Presley for a 20-yard score to make it 14-0.

Bean rallied the Jayhawks by throwing four touchdown passes in the first half. The fourth, a 49-yarder to Quentin Skinner, put Kansas up 25-24 — a score that held up until the break. Bean completed 13 of 17 passes for 274 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. Bowman passed for 261 yards and two scores for the Cowboys while Gordon had 177 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in the first two quarters.

Alex Hale missed a 43-yard field goal with 9:38 remaining that would have put Oklahoma State up 33-32, but the Cowboys scored in the closing minutes after a Kansas turnover. Presley went in motion, took the handoff and scored from 6 yards out to put the Cowboys ahead for good. Kansas got the ball down 39-32 with 15 seconds remaining and no timeouts and could not mount a threat.

Kansas: The Jayhawks moved the ball, but their defense struggled. The Cowboys entered the game averaging 4.3 yards a carry, but they averaged 5.7 on Saturday.

Oklahoma State: Bowman continues to string together solid performances. The Cowboys were platooning quarterbacks before settling on the Michigan transfer. Oklahoma State is 2-1 since giving Bowman the full-time job.

Kansas will likely drop out. Oklahoma State may get some votes.

Oklahoma State: Visits West Virginia on Saturday.

This will be the 69th meeting all-time between the Tigers and Lopers, which dates back to 1926. UNK holds a slight advantage 35-32-1, but FHSU is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings. FHSU had a nine-game win streak over UNK from 2012-2021, but it was snapped last year in Kearney when a No. 23 ranked Loper squad turned away the Tigers 38-20. It was the first win for UNK in MIAA play against the Tigers. Fort Hays State has won five straight over UNK in Hays, including a thrilling come-from-behind 42-35 win in the last meeting in Hays back on Homecoming in 2021.

Fort Hays State has won two in a row entering Saturday. They have averaged 53 points in those two wins after a 71-3 win over Lincoln on Homecoming and then a 35-22 win last week at Missouri Southern. The Tigers have elevated their rushing attack over the last two weeks, averaging 217.5 yards on the ground in the two wins. Nebraska-Kearney is coming off a 38-14 loss at nationally ranked Central Missouri last week. The Lopers have wins over Northeastern State and Washburn, both at home this year, but sit at 0-3 in road games. Two of their three road games were against nationally ranked opponents and the other was a close three-point loss at Central Oklahoma in the season opener. Saturday's game will be the sixth between the two schools. KWU has a 3-2 lead in the series but Avila has won two of the last three including an 18-14 victory last season at JRI Stadium. The Eagles won 30-20 in Kansas City in 2021 and KWU 46-38 in 2020 at Graves Family Sports Complex.

The Coyotes won three games in a row before taking last Saturday off that was part of the KCAC-wide bye week. They defeated McPherson 10-7 September 30 in McPherson before the break. The defense was superb once again limiting the Bulldogs to 297 yards and 35 points below their season average.

After going 4-2 against teams in the Dr. Ted Kessinger Division the Coyotes' the last five games will be against their opponents in the Gene Bissell Division. The division winners receive berths in the NAIA playoffs.

KWU's opponents are averaging 15.5 points and 288.7 yards per game – 135 rushing and 153.7 passing. The Coyotes are averaging 18.3 points and 253 yards – 127.8 rushing and 125.2 passing.

Freshman quarterback Byron McNair made his college debut in the third quarter against McPherson and led the Coyotes on a game-winning 75-yard, nine-play drive in the fourth quarter. He was 7 of 11 passing for 115 yards and had 15 yards rushing on seven carries. Richard Lara started the game and was 7 of 16 for 54 yards.

Coach Matt Myers said a decision on Saturday's starting quarterback would be made later in the week. 

The Eagles have lost five in a row since defeating Bethany in the season opener. They lost to Evangel 44-6 in their game before the break and fell to McPherson 42-21 the previous week.

Opponents have averaged 42.3 points and 476.3 yards this season. Avila is averaging 26.7 points and 353.5 yards (224.7 passing) per game.

Quarterback Eli Williams has had a terrific sophomore season thus far. A transfer from TCU before last season the 6-foot-4 Williams has thrown for 1,334 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also has a team-best 313 yards rushing and seven more touchdowns. 

Williams threw for 140 yards, two touchdowns and had 43 yards rushing in Avila's victory over KWU last season.

Kareem Chambers (22 receptions, 225 yards) and Robert Brooks (20-227) are the top wide receivers in 2023. Three others have at least 13 catches.

"(Williams) is the most talented player we'll probably play against. He put up 40-plus (points) on Southwestern, he'll be a challenge to say the least. He's tall, he's fast, and he can see everything. Our job will be to contain him as much as humanly possible and force him to do some things that he's not used to doing, hopefully. We need to keep him in the pocket and make him uncomfortable. Their skill positions are really good, their tailbacks are good, their wide receivers are really good. They're a little young up front. The game is the reverse of the first half of the season when we played a lot of run-heavy teams; (Avila) throws it 80 percent of the time."

"We are going to evaluate it and put the best guy out there (at quarterback) that we think can sustain drives, make really good decisions and score points."

The Coyotes are averaging 18.3 points and 253 yards – 127.8 rushing and 125.2 passing.Freshman quarterback Byron McNair made his college debut in the third quarter against McPherson and led the Coyotes on a game-winning 75-yard, nine-play drive in the fourth quarter. He was 7 of 11 passing for 115 yards and had 15 yards rushing on seven carries. Richard Lara started the game and was 7 of 16 for 54 yards.Coach Matt Myers said a decision on Saturday's starting quarterback would be made later in the week. <h2>AVILA AT A GLANCE</h2>The Eagles have lost five in a row since defeating Bethany in the season opener. They lost to Evangel 44-6 in their game before the break and fell to McPherson 42-21 the previous week.Opponents have averaged 42.3 points and 476.3 yards this season. Avila is averaging 26.7 points and 353.5 yards (224.7 passing) per game.Quarterback Eli Williams has had a terrific sophomore season thus far. A transfer from TCU before last season the 6-foot-4 Williams has thrown for 1,334 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also has a team-best 313 yards rushing and seven more touchdowns. Williams threw for 140 yards, two touchdowns and had 43 yards rushing in Avila's victory over KWU last season.Kareem Chambers (22 receptions, 225 yards) and Robert Brooks (20-227) are the top wide receivers in 2023. Three others have at least 13 catches.<h2>KWU COACH MATT MYERS</h2>"(Williams) is the most talented player we'll probably play against. He put up 40-plus (points) on Southwestern, he'll be a challenge to say the least. He's tall, he's fast, and he can see everything. Our job will be to contain him as much as humanly possible and force him to do some things that he's not used to doing, hopefully. We need to keep him in the pocket and make him uncomfortable. Their skill positions are really good, their tailbacks are good, their wide receivers are really good. They're a little young up front. The game is the reverse of the first half of the season when we played a lot of run-heavy teams; (Avila) throws it 80 percent of the time.""We are going to evaluate it and put the best guy out there (at quarterback) that we think can sustain drives, make really good decisions and score points.""Whoever dreamt up the (new KCAC) schedule was a genius.
