In Sabalenka's first match since being assured of rising to the top of women's tennis, she showed off the power-based game that allows her to dominate so many opponents, overwhelming No. 13 seed Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-3 on Monday night in Arthur Ashe Stadium to advance to her fifth consecutive major quarterfinal.

Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton are putting the 'US' in the US Open

NEW YORK (AP) — There are three American men in the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the first time since 2005. Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton are the trio this time and all will be in action Tuesday. Fritz goes up against 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic for a spot in the semifinals, while Tiafoe and Shelton play each other. Djokovic says he understands why American tennis fans aren't happy that they haven't had a male Grand Slam singles champion since Andy Roddick 20 years ago. He knows they got used to having champion after champion in earlier days.

As sports betting spikes, help for problem gamblers expands in some states

When the NFL season kicks off, Kentucky residents will be able to legally bet on games for the first time. When they do, they also will be funding the state's first-ever program for people with gambling problems. Nearly three-fourths of the states have moved swiftly to allow sports betting since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for it five years ago. State funding for problem gambling services generally has not kept pace — averaging just 38 cents per capita. But more states, like Kentucky, are requiring at least a portion of their sports wagering revenues to go toward helping addicted gamblers.

Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías arrested near Los Angeles stadium where Messi was playing MLS game

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías was arrested near BMO Stadium, where Lionel Messi was playing in a Major League Soccer game with numerous celebrities in attendance. Exposition Park public safety said its officers arrested Urías at about 11 p.m. on Sunday inside the park, which is home to the stadium. The department would not immediately disclose what charges Urías was arrested on, but said it would release more details Monday. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department booking records show Urías posted $50,000 bail and was released shortly before 5 a.m. on Monday. He is due in court Sept. 27. Major League Baseball intends to investigate.

Georgia football staffer Jarvis Jones arrested for speeding, reckless driving

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Police say former Georgia and NFL linebacker Jarvis Jones was arrested for speeding and reckless driving ahead of the Bulldogs' season opener. Jones now works as a player coordinator for the football program. His arrest late Friday is the latest driving investigation to tarnish the two-time reigning national champions. They have struggled to deal with the issue since a high-speed crash killed offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy on Jan. 15. Georgia coach Kirby Smart declined comments other than to say Jones will face "internal discipline."

Fan ejected from US Open match after German player said the man used language from Hitler's regime

NEW YORK (AP) — A fan was ejected from a U.S. Open tennis match early Tuesday morning after German player Alexander Zverev complained the man used language from Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime. Zverev, the No. 12 seed, was in the fourth set of his match against No. 6 Jannik Sinner when he suddenly went to chair umpire James Keothavong and pointed toward the fan, who was sitting in a section behind the umpire. During a changeover shortly after, the fan was identified by spectators seated near him, and he was removed by security. Zverev went on to beat Sinner in five sets and will play defending U.S. Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.

Shohei Ohtani's agent says the star plans to continue as a pitcher and hitter after his elbow heals

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani's agent says the Los Angeles Angels' two-way superstar is determined to continue his career as both a pitcher and a hitter after he recovers from his latest elbow injury. Nez Balelo said Monday that he thinks it's "inevitable" that Ohtani will need some sort of procedure to heal the ligament tear in his pitching elbow, but they're still gathering opinions on whether that procedure should be Tommy John surgery or a nonsurgical remedy. Balelo said Ohtani will continue playing as the Angels' designated hitter for the foreseeable future this season. Balelo said Ohtani also intends "to be in somebody's lineup next year DHing when the bell rings."

Leonard helps Duke stun No. 9 Clemson 28-7 in a lopsided ACC opener

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Riley Leonard broke loose from a tackler and sprinted to the open for a 44-yard touchdown that highlighted Duke's tough and physical performance that shocked ninth-ranked Clemson 28-7 in the season opener for both teams. Jaquez Moore and Jordan Waters ran for fourth-quarter touchdowns to turn this into an unexpected blowout of the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference favorite. It was Duke's first win agianst Clemson since 2004 and ended a 28-game losing streak against top-10 opponents. Cade Klubnik threw for a short touchdown to Will Shipley in what became Clemson's only score.

No. 4 Alabama, No. 11 Texas meet in rematch of last year's down-to-wire game

No. 11 Texas and No. 4 Alabama are set to meet again a year after going down to the wire. The two tradition-rich programs and future Southeastern Conference opponents are set to face off in a potential Top-10 showdown in Tuscaloosa. Alabama won 20-19 last year on a field goal in the final seconds. The close loss was still enough to vault the Longhorns into the Top 25. It gave Steve Sarkisian and Texas a measure of credibility while exposing the Tide's vulnerability. Alabama had 15 penalties in the game.

Serbia moves into World Cup semifinals by beating Lithuania, which had just topped the U.S.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Serbia was more than happy to help Lithuania repeat some odd history. Bogdan Bogdanovic led the way with 21 points and Serbia beat Lithuania 87-68 in the World Cup quarterfinals. Lithuania was playing less than 48 hours after beating the U.S. to close out second-round play. That was the third time Lithuania has beaten the U.S. in senior men's national competition. And in all three of those tournaments, Lithuania wound up not turning a victory over the U.S. into a medal. The best it can do now is fifth in Manila. Serbia is in the World Cup semifinals for the third time in the last four tournaments.

Ragans, 25, led the Majors in the month of August with a 1.72 ERA (7 ER in 36.2 IP) and 53 strikeouts, and led the American League in both K/9 (13.0) and K% (36.6%), trailing only Milwaukee’s&nbsp;Freddy Peralta&nbsp;(13.8 K/9, 40.0 K%) among Major League pitchers. Half of his 6 starts in August were scoreless and his most recent performance extended his scoreless streak to a career-high 15.0 innings, which was the 4th-longest active streak in the Majors entering today.

Ragans’ 53 strikeouts in 36.2 innings last month were the 2nd most for any month in Royals history, trailing only&nbsp;Dennis Leonard, who had 55 strikeouts in 59.1 innings in June 1977, the year he set the club’s single-season strikeout record (244). Ragans’ 13.0 K/9 and 36.6 K% were the highest rates by a pitcher (min. 5 starts) in any calendar month in franchise history, and his 1.72 ERA was the best mark by a Royal in August since&nbsp;Bret Saberhagen&nbsp;had a 1.58 ERA (10 ER in 57.0 IP) in August 1989, the year he won his second&nbsp;Cy Young&nbsp;Award.

Ragans is the ninth different Royals pitcher (16thoccurrence) to be named American League Pitcher of the Month, and the first since&nbsp;Zack Greinke&nbsp;in April 2009, the year he won the Cy Young Award. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cole Ragans continued his recent success with six scoreless innings as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 12-1 in the first game of a three-game series Monday.

The American League Pitcher of the Month for August, Ragans (6-4) retired the first 13 batters he faced and finished with just one hit allowed. He struck out seven and didn't walk anyone. He now has a 21-inning scoreless streak.

Ragans finally gave up his first baserunner when Yoán Moncada dropped a single into short center with one out in the fifth. Ragans then got Sosa to hit into a 5-4-3 double play.

The Royals erased any drama in the fifth. Massey drove in a run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. Waters added an RBI single, Nick Loftin added a two-run double, Garcia drove home Loftin with a double before Olivares hit his second homer of the day.

The White Sox scored an unearned run in the eighth.

White Sox: Recalled RHP Declan Cronin from Class AAA Charlotte; placed RHP Jimmy Lambert on the 15-day injured list with right ankle inflammation; reinstated C Seby Zavala from the injured list and designated him for assignment.

The Missions grabbed an early two-run lead in the top of the first inning. Michael De La Cruz hit a line drive to center field for a two RBI double.

The Wind Surge tied the ballgame up in the bottom of the second. Will Holland hit a two RBI double on a fly ball to left field.

ENID, Oklahoma – The No. 16-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team completed a weekend trip to Oklahoma with a second-straight shutout on Sunday against NOC-Enid.

While it wasn't the scoring explosion of Saturday, the Blue Dragons dominated possession and defeated the Jets 3-0 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Blue Dragons improve to 5-0-1. They will return to KJCCC play on Wednesday, playing host to No. 11 Butler in a Top 20 national matchup in a 6 p.m. kickoff at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Hutchinson out-shot 12-2, putting 10 shots on goal.

Marx scored her fifth goal of the season and scored a goal in her third-consecutive game.

With 33 seconds left in the first half, Lackey scored her first goal of the season from a Marx assist for a 2-0 lead. That was Lackeys' third career goal.

The Blue Dragons made it 3-0 with 6:46 to play in the second half when Edwards scored on an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/hoffman_emma_5iyj">Emma Hoffman</a>&nbsp;assist. The goal was Edwards' seventh of the season and she has scored a goal in four-straight games.

 ⚽ No. 16 HutchCC Blue Dragons shut out NOC-Enid

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Masataka Yoshida hit a three-run homer and Adam Duvall had a solo shot to back Chris Sale as the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Sunday.

Sale (6-3) didn’t allow a run over five innings, gave up two hits and struck out five while walking two. It was the first time he hasn’t allowed a run in a start since July 12 of last season.

“They are a good team and they are very patient and I felt like I was throwing a lot of pitches they were fouling off,” Sale said. “It's good to take this last one heading into Tampa.”

The Red Sox have won two straight after losing five in a row and six of seven. They are 5 1/2 games behind Texas for the final AL wild card.

Yoshida’s three-run homer went 415 feet to right field, scoring Justin Turner and Triston Casas in the fourth inning. It was his 14th homer on the year. Duvall added a home run in the sixth inning for his 19th of the season and gave Boston a 4-0 lead.

“He has been feeling better the last few days has been grinding through some things but his swing is getting back. He took some good cuts and he let it fly,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “Those are good signs.”

Boston added two runs in the seventh including an RBI from Turner which came off of Austin Cox. Rafael Devers hit an RBI double in the ninth.

Salvador Perez hit an RBI single scoring Bobby Witt Jr. in the sixth and Dairon Blanco hit a two run single in the ninth off of Kenley Jansen.

“I thought we worked some good at-bats and deep counts but we just couldn’t break through,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He (Sale) located when he had to…we just weren’t able to string a throng together against him.”

Taylor Clarke opened the game and pitched a scoreless inning before Zack Greinke (1-14) went 3 2/3 innings allowing three runs on five hits.

“He was a little under the weather today and didn’t have his full stamina, but he was still one pitch away from putting up another zero in the fourth,” Quatraro said.

It’s been over a month since the Royals have won a series and have lost eight of their last nine games.

Alex Verdugo left the game in the middle of the bottom of the sixth inning due to left hamstring tightness. ... The Red Sox reinstated LHP Brennan Bernardino from the COVID-19 Related Injured List. The club also placed RHP Garrett Whitlock on the Bereavement List.

Boston will travel to Tampa Bay with Brayan Bello (10-8, 3.57) taking the mound on Monday. Kansas City sends Cole Ragans (5-4, 3.27) to the hill on Monday as they host the White Sox.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.-Sophomore middle blocker Anna Dean posted career highs of 15 kills and eight total blocks to lead the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to a five-set victory over Jayhawk Conference rival Seward County on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons stayed unbeaten in conference play with a 25-13, 20-25, 25-12, 22-25, 15-11 victory over the Saints, Hutchinson’s first five-set victory over Seward County since October 7, 2016 when the Dragons rallied from down to sets to win in Liberal.

The Dragons improve to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchinson travels to Cloud County on Wednesday and plays next weekend in the Weatherford Tournament in Weatherford, Texas.

Dean hit .444 for the match with 15 kills on 27 attacks. She had two solo blocks and six block assists and she added in a career-best three service aces.

The Blue Dragon sophomore middle had three kills in the decisive fifth set, including kills on the final two rallies of the match.

Dean paced a Blue Dragon offense that out-hit Seward County .203-.145 and was the top Dragon blocker. Hutchinson out-blocked Seward County 13-8. Taniya Golden had five total blocks, while Giovanna Ravanhani and McKenzie Murphy added four total blocks each.

Golden had a team-high 17 kills with .164 hitting on 61 total attacks. Golden had her fifth double-double of the season with 10 digs and had two ace serves.

Sophomore Ashlyn Long was next with eight kills on .182 hitting.

Ravanhani, the Blue Dragon sophomore setter, had 44 set assists and three service aces. She added four kills in 12 attacks.

Freshman libero Isabella Rolandini had a season-high 27 digs to lead the Blue Dragon back row. Alejandra Briseno added 15 digs.

Hutchinson had 13 service aces to Seward’s four. Briseno led with four aces.

Seward County was led by Dora Filipovic, who had a match-high 22 kills on .341 hitting. Keala Wilson had 14 kills for the Saints.

The Blue Dragons are now 2-0 in five-set matches this season and 10-4 under head coach Delice Downing.&nbsp;

SET 1: Golden and Dean got the Blue Dragons off to a fast start with six and five kills, respectively. Dean had an early kill and ace serve in a 5-1 run to start the match. After the Saints rallied to take a 6-5 lead, Golden and Dean combined for five kills in an 8-3 run. A Dean kill gave the Dragons a 13-9 lead. Leading 14-12, Long’s kill started a 7-0 Hutchinson run that was capped by a Dean/Ravanhani double block for a 21-12 lead. The Dragons scored on 4 of the final 5 rallies, hitting .263 in the set to win 25-13.

SET 2: The Saints took immediate charge of the second set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. Seward County out-hit Hutchinson .273-.140 in the set. Golden and Long had four kills in the set and Dean added three kills. The Dragons trailed by as many as six points twice, the second time at 14-8. A Dean ace capped a 5-0 run to pull the Dragons within 17-13. A Murphy/Long double block capped a 5-0 run and the Dragons trailed 19-18. The Saints regained control, outscoring Hutchinson 6-2 over the remainder of the set to win 25-20 and knot the match at 1-1.

SET 3: Hutchison hit just .167 in the third set, but held the Saints to a minus-.077 hitting. A Long kill capped a 10-2 start to the set for Hutchinson. A Briseno/Dean double block gave Hutchinson a 13-4 lead and a Briseno kill upped the lead to 17-8.&nbsp;&nbsp;Leading 19-11, the Dragons closed out the set with a 6-1 run with kills from Cameron Letcher, Golden and Dean. Alondra Velez’s ace on set point capped a 25-12 Dragon win.

SET 4: Seward’s Filipovic caught fire in the fourth set with 11 kills on 14 attacks, hitting .714 in the set. One of those kills gave Seward a 12-9 lead. The Dragons rallied with three kills and a Seward lift violation to take a 13-12 lead. Filipovic had five kills in a 6-0 Seward run to take an 18-13 lead. The Dragons bounce back with a 5-1 run capped by a Golden kill on an over pass to pull Hutchinson within 19-18. The Dragons took a 22-21 lead with kills from Ravanhani and Callie Muff, but the Saints scored the final four points of the set to win 25-22.

SET 5: There were six ties and five lead changes in the fifth set. A Golden/Murphy double block gave Hutchinson an early 5-3 lead. The Saints answered back with a 3-0 run for a 6-5 lead. A Murphy kill tied the set at 6-6 and a Murphy/Golden double block gave the Dragons the lead for good at 7-6. A long kill upped the Dragon lead to 12-8, but Seward bounded back with three-straight point to pull within 12-11. The Saints were called for a lift violation on the next rally for a two-point Dragon lead. ENID, Oklahoma – Sophomore forward Adriana Delgado set career single-game highs for points and goals for a second-straight game and the No. 16-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team scored 10 goals in a game for the first time since 2019 on Saturday against Crowder College.

The Blue Dragons rolled to a 10-0 victory over Crowder in a neutral-site game played at the Advance Soccer Complex on Saturday. Hutchinson (4-0-1) will play NOC-Enid at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Delgado scored a career-high four goals and had an assist for a career-best nine points against Crowder. She had three goals in the first half, posting the 98th all-time hat trick in Blue Dragon women’s soccer history.

Delgado’s four-goal game is the first by a Blue Dragon since Hadlie Lowe scored four against Dodge City on October 12 of last season. Delgado’s nine points are the most by a Blue Dragon since Naomi Waithra had an eight-point game against Hesston College on October 9, 2019. Delgado is the first Blue Dragon to have nine or more points in a game since Samantha Vaughn had a 16-point game against Hesston College on September 14, 2019.

Delgado now has a team-high eight goals scored this season.

Hutchinson’s 10-goal explosion – the Dragons led Crowder 6-0 at halftime – is the first game with 10 or more goals since a 19-0 rout of Hesston College on September 14, 2019.

The Blue Dragons dominated play from the outset, outshooting Crowder 40-3 on total shots taken and 22-1 on shots on goal.&nbsp;

Freshman Katharina Marx had her first career multi-goal game with two goals scored on Saturday. She now has four goals for the season.

Freshman Kaitlyn Edwards had a goal and two assists for a four-point game. Edwards now has six goals this season and she had her first career multi-assist game. This was also her third multi-point game (three or more points in a game) of the season.

Freshmen Maria Azevedo and Emma Hoffman both tallied three points on Saturday. Both Azevedo and Hoffman scored a goal and had an assist. Azevedo was credited with her first career game-winning goal.

Sophomore Tatiana Mayumi and freshman Nancy Stefanek and Kaylee Monk also had assists on Saturday.

Freshman goalkeeper Karsyn Slothower posted her fourth shutout of the season, having to make just one save in the game.

This was the first all-time meeting between Hutchinson and Crowder in women’s soccer.

Pierson Ohl made his 12th start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched five and two thirds innings where he gave up one run off six hits.
