García, the AL Championship Series MVP, has a moderate strain of his left oblique, according to manager Bruce Bochy. Scherzer, who had been in line to pitch a possible Game 7, has a muscle spasm on the right side of his back.

Sanders says NCAA or Rose Bowl should reimburse Colorado players for missing items from locker room

Colorado coach Deion Sanders believes the NCAA or the Rose Bowl should step in and reimburse his players for the items that went missing from the Buffaloes' locker room while they played at No. 20 UCLA over the weekend. Police in Pasadena, California, continue to conduct interviews, review video and assess what valuables were reported missing. Sanders is helping by compiling a list of what was lost by players and staff members. Sanders says that while they may not be able to get back the items, there should be a way to compensate players. He called on the NCAA to help out.

Hendrick Motorsports took a gamble on William Byron. Now he'll try to win his 1st Cup title

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rick Hendrick first met William Byron as a local Charlotte teenager, fan of Hendrick Motorsports and budding NASCAR driver. Something about the 15-year-old struck Hendrick, who recognized a young talent with a potentially bright future in NASCAR. Hendrick snagged Byron away from the Toyota camp in 2016, promoted him to the Cup Series in 2018 when he was 20 years old and fresh off an Xfinity Series championship and gave him the tools to become a star. It's paid off as Byron heads to Phoenix Raceway this week with a shot at winning his first Cup title.

Column: Options abound for getting to the PGA Tour. LIV Golf offers a new wrinkle

The golf seasons are coming to an end and players who don't keep their PGA Tour cards will have plenty of options. It used to be as simple as deciding whether to get in limited tour events or going down to the Korn Ferry Tour for a year. But now players have the option of joining the European tour and trying to finish high enough to regain a PGA Tour card. And then there's LIV Golf. The Saudi-funded league is staging a three-day promotions event for three players to join. That was an option that didn't previously exist.

This is the second time the 5-foot-11, 185-pound freshman from Gainesville, Florida has won the conference’s defensive weekly award. He also won it on September 12 after his three interception game against Iowa Central.&nbsp;

During No. 1 Hutchinson’s 13-0 victory over Highland last Saturday, Nolan intercepted two passes to lead a dominant defensive performance by the Blue Dragons. Hutchinson held the Scotties to 131 total yards&nbsp;

WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State announced their latest 2024 Pizza Hut Hall of Fame class of inductees on Monday, and the class includes former Buhler standout golfer Taryn Torgerson.

She golfed for the Wichita State women's golf program from 2014 to 2018 and was the 2018 individual champion in the American Athletic Conference, was the 2016 individual champion in the Missouri Valley Conference and led the team to a 2016 MVC championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.

Torgerson finished her Wichita State career first in tournament titles (6), first in lowest career stroke average (75.55), first in lowest single season stroke average (73.26) and first in lowest 54-hole stroke average (226.64).

Her father Brendan is the boys and girls golf coach at Buhler and coached Taryn during her career at Buhler High School.&nbsp; 

A dinner for the inductees is set for 6 p.m. on Jan. 27 at the Beggs Ballroom on the Wichita State campus, while the induction ceremony is scheduled for halftime of Wichita State's Jan. 28 (2 p.m.) men's basketball game against SMU.

Cost for the dinner is $50 per person, and paid reservations can be made online at goshockers.com or by calling the Shocker Ticket Office at 316/978-FANS or in person at the WSU Ticket Office located on the south side of Charles Koch Arena.

The Patriots have the history. The Chiefs have the juice.

New England is bringing its six Super Bowl trophies. How about a yacht? Kansas City has that, not to mention&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/top-quarterbacks-mahomes-tagovailoa-allen-jackson-hurts-0f9f5979e44d86ec227484827fdb22f0">the star quarterback</a>&nbsp;and tight end.

They’re all headed to Frankfurt to take part in two weeks of American football because beyond the games, there are German fans to win over. A lot of them.

“Most Germans don’t have a team yet,” said Alexander Steinforth, the NFL’s general manager for Germany.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/carolina-panthers-seattle-seahawks-tampa-bay-buccaneers-kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-0bea6a57c5a927f0cf57d1d4cc6b1be1">fandom is in the millions</a>&nbsp;— a barely tapped gold mine for teams and a league which have mostly maxed out domestically. The league says it has 18 million casual fans — that would be roughly one in five residents of Germany — and 3.6 million “avid” ones.

“We are reaching that state of maturity where you see fans are actively seeking out teams and are looking for teams that they can follow," Steinforth said. "That’s why the market is so exciting for franchises to be active in because right now they have a massive opportunity to pick up fans.”

The Chiefs go first — they’ll play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. A week later, the Patriots face the Indianapolis Colts. Both games are at Deutsche Bank Park.

The Chiefs and Patriots both have commercial rights in Germany under the league’s&nbsp;<a href="https://operations.nfl.com/updates/the-game/nfl-announces-growth-of-global-markets-program-with-the-addition-of-two-new-clubs-and-four-new-markets/">global markets program</a>, as do the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons. It means they can sign corporate sponsorship deals, hold events to attract fans and sell merchandise like they do in their home markets.

For Kansas City, life is good. They’re the defending Super Bowl champion. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the reigning MVP. Travis Kelce is having another big season. Oh yeah, the tight end also appears to be in a relationship with global megastar Taylor Swift, which only&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-nfl-gen-z-be42bde423a35c8f4c34bd9a18327b07">adds to the buzz</a>.

“It’s perfect timing for us as a franchise and we’re going to be very aggressive in taking full advantage of that,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said of the team’s overall momentum.

The Chiefs have spent $1 million in preparation and fan events for Frankfurt, Donovan said.

The team is docking a Chiefs-themed yacht in the Main River for fans to board and get a selfie with the Lombardi trophy from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2023-kansas-city-chiefs-philadelphia-eagles-43a1fb387f63438c1eea23b6a4244d95">their 38-35 win</a>&nbsp;over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Both the Chiefs and Patriots wanted last year’s first-ever regular-season game in Munich, but that went to the Bucs and Tom Brady, in part because NFC teams had the extra home game.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/seattle-seahawks-tom-brady-tampa-bay-buccaneers-new-england-patriots-nfl-d3624bfc6649100cbd7a090c1bdcc942">Bucs beat the Seattle Seahawks 21-16</a>&nbsp;at Allianz Arena in what Steinforth said was the NFL's “most-successful international game” in terms of viewership and merchandise sales. He added that German viewership this season on free-to-air broadcaster RTL is up “9 to 10%" from a year ago.

Though five teams are in the market, the Chiefs and Patriots “have been the most aggressive and probably have the most foothold,” Donovan said. New England has some advantages, he added, ”because they’ve been there longer and they have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-soccer-sports-germany-europe-098f5fcf8d1bdf1646f776c1e4f3089d">some German players</a>&nbsp;and German radio and things like that.

“We definitely want to be No. 1 in Germany” and elsewhere, he said.

New England saw a surge of interest after selecting German offensive lineman Sebastian Vollmer in 2009. They began pushing&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/patsdeutsch/status/1712113439383101596">German content</a>&nbsp;into the country. The Super Bowl titles kept coming, all coinciding with NFL games airing weekly on free TV network ProSieben. The league switched to the bigger RTL starting this season.

“I would say we are the No. 1 (team) or we have been for many, many years, but obviously we’re running up against the Kansas City Chiefs, who are doing really well right now and their popularity is soaring,” said Joe Dorant, the team’s senior director of business development for the region.

All six of New England’s Lombardi trophies will be on display for fans and photos at “Patriots Haus” downtown, and alumni will be greeting the locals.

“I don’t think we can,” Dorant said. “The only thing we can do is show the German people what the Patriot way is. We’ve been successful for many, many years — for a 20-year span. No other team can say that.”

Kansas City already had the fastest-growing Instagram and TikTok engagement in Germany among NFL teams and that was “pre-Taylor,” Donovan said. Among the five teams in the market, the Chiefs have the most Instagram followers on their German account, but the Panthers have the edge on TikTok.

“I don't know at this point if she’s going to Germany or not,” Donovan said.

Kelce is sure to face questions about Swift from the locals. Brady was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/seattle-seahawks-tampa-bay-buccaneers-tom-brady-nfl-sports-0e7614a0cd2597e3949b4eb7d2796c82">grilled about his personal life</a>&nbsp;following his divorce from Gisele Bündchen. A TV producer also&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/AP_NFL/status/1591148718757384193">presented Brady with Bavarian lederhosen</a>.

Teams have hired German agencies and advisers to facilitate deals — the Chiefs' sponsorship agreements include fast food and pet food — but they didn't need help figuring out they can gain visibility through Germany's top sport: soccer.

Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich has more than 40 million Instagram followers. The Patriots are tops in the NFL with 5 million. The Chiefs' German account is just under 46,000.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.panthers.com/news/panthers-bundesliga-eintracht-frankfurt-to-promote-nfl-football-in-germany">Panthers partnered with Eintracht Frankfurt</a>, the Bundesliga club that plays in Deutsche Bank Park.

New England&nbsp;<a href="https://www.patriots.com/news/patriots-host-german-men-s-national-soccer-team-at-gillette-stadium-ahead-of-int">hosted the German national soccer team</a>&nbsp;in Foxborough. The Chiefs have&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=KLRN5dXi62o">linked up with Bayern</a>&nbsp;through the Hunt family-owned FC Dallas.

The Panthers and Falcons would figure to be next in line. Germany is slated to host one game next year — the NFL confirmed on Monday it will be in Munich — and one in 2025.

The Patriots hope to play in Germany as often as possible.

“We would have no issue with playing a game next year and the year after — however many games that they ask us to play,” Dorant said.

The Chiefs and Patriots are the designated “home” teams in Frankfurt. The Chiefs are such a big draw that other teams don't want to give up a visit from them.

“We’d like to be more aggressive in being in the international markets more often,” Donovan said. “Right now, we’d only do it as an away team ideally, or during those years when we have the extra home game.”

It’s widely expected the NFL will extend its deal in Germany. The league opened an office in Dusseldorf with a capacity for 25 employees.

“That’s the idea, to grow into it,” Steinforth said.

Tied at 12-12 in the fifth set, Dean had a kill, solo block and block assist on the final three rallies of the match to power the Blue Dragons to a 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 20-25, 15-12 victory at the Power Plant to snap a seven-match losing streak to the Grizzlies.

The Blue Dragons finish the regular season 24-14 and tied Colby for second place in the Jayhawk Conference at 11-5. The Blue Dragons win the tie-breaker with Colby for the second seed for the upcoming Region VI Tournament. The Blue Dragons will play host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the opening round.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks have been named the Cheez-It National Team of the Week following its 38-33 victory over No. 6 Oklahoma on Saturday. The award, presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), was announced Monday.

Kansas improved to 6-2 on the year and 3-2 in Big 12 play with its first win over Oklahoma since 1997. The Jayhawks outscored OU 12-6 in the fourth quarter and took the lead for good following a nine-yard touchdown run by Devin Neal with 55 seconds to play. KU’s defense then held the Sooners scoreless on their final drive, closing out the game when Kwinton Lassiter broke up an OU pass attempt in the end zone on the final play of the game.

The win was the first for Kansas over a top 10 team since the Jayhawks defeated No. 5 Virginia Tech in the 2008 Orange Bowl. It was also KU’s first regular season win over a top 10 team since defeating No. 4 Colorado in 1995 and the first top 10 victory at home since defeating No. 2 Oklahoma in 1984.

The Crusaders were state champs in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and now 2023.

The Buhler girls finished 4th. Their top runner was Corbin Starkweather. She was 19th.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – In an exhibition fundraiser to benefit the Maui Strong Fund, the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 82-75 at the State Farm Center. Redshirt senior Kevin McCullar Jr. scored 25 points and senior transfer Hunter Dickinson added 22 points to lead the Jayhawks on Sunday evening. The two teams partnered together to make the game a fundraiser to provide financial resources for rapid response and recovery for the devastating wildfires in Maui.

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos snapped their 16-game skid to the Kansas City Chiefs in a big way. They turned three touchdown passes from Russell Wilson and five takeaways into a 24-9 win in cold conditions in Denver. Safety Justin Simmons had a pair of takeways and the Broncos beat Patrick Mahomes for the first time in 13 tries. Mahomes was added to the injury report before the game because of an illness and he was held without a touchdown throw for the first time since a 22-9 Chiefs' win over the Broncos in 2021.

The 29-year-old from Minnesota was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in a Challenge Cup game against the Sheffield Steelers when he suffered a slashed neck during the second period. Johnson played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League before spending the 2020-21 season in Sweden with the Malmo Redhawks. He went on to play in the American Hockey League and Germany before agreeing to join Nottingham for this season.

“We raised well north of a million dollars, so it was good,” said Head Coach Bill Self. “They did a great job with selling as many tickets as possible. There were a lot of positive things that came from it and I do think it was much more uncomfortable of environment than our players thought it would be.”

Kansas won the tip and traded back-and-forth buckets with Illinois for the first 10 minutes of regulation, with McCullar Jr. scoring 11 of Kansas’ first 15 points. Defense picked up as both teams struggled to find any momentum, until the Illini went on a 7-0 scoring run with five minutes left in the first half, stretching their lead to 31-23. The Jayhawks responded with back-to-back alley-oop dunks from Dickinson.

Illinois closed out the half with a pair of three-pointers as they went into the locker room with a 43-37 lead. Led by 18 first-half points from McCullar Jr., Kansas shot 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from the field and scored 26 points in the paint. Illinois shot 50.0 percent (17-of-34) from the field, which included seven three-pointers.

The second half opened with a layup and a mid-range jumper from Dickinson, followed by a dunk from KJ Adams Jr. An uncontested layup by redshirt senior Dajuan Harris Jr. tied the game up at 68 apiece with five minutes to play.

A battle of the big men commenced, as Illinois forward Coleman Hawkins drilled his fourth three-pointer of the game, which was answered by a hook-shot from Dickinson. With two minutes left in the contest, Illinois stretched its lead to six after a back-door layup from guard Justin Harmon.

As a team, Kansas shot 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the floor and 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from beyond the arc. Illinois shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the floor and 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from beyond the arc. The Jayhawks were led by 25 points from McCullar Jr., 22 points from Dickinson and 14 points from Adams Jr. Harris Jr. dished out eight assists to go along with his six points, two steals and one blocked shot.

“I thought our mindset was okay,” added Self. “It exposed us and it did exactly what we wanted it to do. I didn’t think some of our newcomers responded like we hoped they would, but if you can only get three steals as a team on the road you aren’t going to win. We executed well in the second half so there were some good things that happened in that regard.”

🏀 Kansas Drops Maui Strong Exhibition Contest Versus Illinois

When the discussion turned to turnovers,&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kenny-pohto/7584">Kenny Pohto</a>&nbsp;leaned into the microphone and spoke to remind everyone he committed none of those mistakes.

Wichita State defeated NCAA Division II Rogers (Okla.) State 74-53 in an exhibition game at Koch Arena on Sunday afternoon. 

Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/paul-mills/1128">Paul Mills</a>&nbsp;will look at video, crunch numbers and confer with his assistants to get a full picture of the performance, but he was sure of Pohto's value without review.

Pohto, a junior center, scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out two assists. No turnovers, as he mentioned, and Mills loved that. He credited with Pohto with creating five other scoring opportunities that didn't turn into assists.

"His decision-making was great," Mills said. "Zero turnovers is pretty impressive.

"Pohto's passing and ball-handling stood out because several of his teammates were not as adept at keeping the ball in the right hands. The Shockers had 10 first-half turnovers, leading to 11 points for Rogers State. The Shockers cut that number to seven in the second half and they put the game away in the final seven minutes by avoiding those mistakes.

Shocker coaches will carefully monitor those numbers. Mills' Oral Roberts team excelled at keeping the ball on offense, usually ranking among the nation's leaders in avoiding turnovers. Last season, ORU averaged 9.4 turnovers a game, tied for fifth nationally.

"I don't do well with turning it over," Mills said.

Pohto is good with the ball because of his natural instincts and because he can see the court and make quick, simple passes. One simple way to score is throw the ball to Ballard near the basket, as Pohto did for one of his assists.

"I've got to learn how to throw lobs," Pohto said. "Quincy can really get them."

Too often his teammates dribbled into traffic and lost the ball or watched as their imprecise pass went the other way.

"There's simpler decisions to make without making it that complicated," Mills said, describing one such scenario. "You've just to go through the film and have guys understand that.

"Pohto started a forward with center&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/quincy-ballard/7586">Quincy Ballard</a>&nbsp;in a two-big lineup that has worked for the Shockers. Mills said those two graded out well in the scrimmage against Iowa as a combination. On Sunday, they overwhelmed a smaller team. Ballard finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Pohto led WSU with a plus-25 plus-minus ranking and Ballard was at plus-21.No matter how things unfolded, the Shockers noticed that Mills rarely seem bothered. He took in the highlights and mistakes with equal calm."

"Pohto said.Mills said that is how operates. He is more animated in practice. By game time, a player should know his job and not need to watch his coach for feedback. The focus should be on performing, not worrying about a coach stomping or yelling.

"Good coaches, in my opinion, they do their work in practice," Mills said.

 "I don't need them paying attention to me and my reactions. That should have been handled in a film session and behind closed doors.

"The Shockers go back behind closed doors until the Nov. 6 opener against Lipscomb at Koch Arena.&nbsp;&nbsp;
