AP Sports Summary for October 26th, 2024:
Freeman hits 1st walk-off slam in World Series history as Dodgers top Yankees 6-3 in classic opener
LOS ANGELES (AP) β Freddie Freeman hit the first game-ending grand slam in World Series history with two outs in the 10th inning to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees in a drama-filled opener. Hobbled by a badly sprained right ankle, Freeman homered on the first pitch he saw β an inside fastball from Nestor Cortes β and raised his bat high before beginning his trot as the sellout crowd of 52,394 roared. In the top of the 10th, Anthony Volpe grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop, scoring Jazz Chisholm Jr. from third after he stole two bases, to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. It was the third straight World Series opener to go extra innings.
Freddie Freeman's World Series grand slam sparks a joyous family moment in a difficult year
LOS ANGELES (AP) β Freddie Freeman persevered through a difficult season to stay in position to make World Series history with his 10th-inning grand slam in Game 1 of the World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Just three months before his historic slam, Freeman and his wife, Chelsea, were at the hospital bedside of their 3-year-old son, Maximus, as he fought for his life after being stricken with Guillain-BarrΓ© syndrome. Max survived and thrived, and now his father has made World Series history even while playing on a badly sprained right ankle.
Reddick's plan to give Davis an increased role has led to 2-0 start for Lakers
LOS ANGELES (AP) β When JJ Redick was hired as the Los Angeles Lakers coach, he said one of his early goals was to make Anthony Davis the offensive hub. Two games into Redick's tenure, things are going according to plan. With 35 points Friday night in a 123-116 victory over the Phoenix Suns, Davis joined Jerry West and Elgin Baylor as the only Lakers to score at least 35 points in the first two games of a season. Davis also had eight rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. He had 36 points and 16 rebounds in the Lakers' 110-103 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night. Reddick is the Lakers' first coach since Phil Jackson in 1999 to win his first two games.
Bronny James expected to begin splitting time between Lakers, G League team after trip
LOS ANGELES (AP) β Bronny James is expected to begin splitting time between the Lakers and the team's G League affiliate, even though coach JJ Reddick said those plans could change. ESPN reported Friday that James will be going between the two teams after the Lakers complete a five-game trip Nov. 6. The South Bay Lakers begin their G League season Nov. 9 against the Salt Lake City Stars. Reddick said the plans for James are fluid based on real time.
Towns, Brunson help Knicks roll to a 123-98 victory over the Pacers in their home opener
NEW YORK (AP) β Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points and 15 rebounds in his Knicks home debut, Jalen Brunson scored 26 points and New York routed the Indiana Pacers 123-98 on Friday night. Mikal Bridges also scored 21 points and Josh Hart had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who bounced back powerfully after they were blown out 132-109 in Boston on Tuesday in the NBA season opener. Indiana All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton was scoreless and went 0 for 7 behind the 3-point line, falling to 1 for 16 for the season. Reserve Bennedict Mathurin scored 20 points.
Ashton Jeanty runs for 128 yards and winning TD, No. 17 Boise State beats UNLV 29-24
LAS VEGAS (AP) β Ashton Jeanty, the nation's leading rusher, didn't play up to his standards but still rushed for 128 yards and the winning touchdown to help No. 17 Boise State beat UNLV 29-24 on Friday night in a game with College Football Playoff implications. Jeanty's 1-yard TD run on fourth-and-goal with 12:38 left put the Broncos (6-1, 3-0 Mountain West) in front for good. Maddux Madsen passed for 209 yards and a touchdown as Boise State kept alive it hopes of making the College Football Playoff. The Broncos are bowl eligible for the 27th consecutive season, the nation's second-longest active streak. They also are 28-1 coming after off weeks since 2001. The Rebels (6-2, 2-1) needed a victory to stay in realistic contention for a playoff spot.
Willing to sacrifice elbow to pitch in World Series, Cortes gives up game-winning grand slam
LOS ANGELES (AP) β Nestor Cortes was so happy to reach the World Series, he was willing to sacrifice his elbow and perhaps millions of dollars. He wound up blowing a 10th-inning lead for the New York Yankees in Game 1. Freddie Freeman hit the first walk-off grand slam in Series history, a two-out drive off Cortes that lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-3 victory. Nicknamed Nasty Nestor and the Hialeah Kid, the 29-year-old left-hander stood at his locker stall for about a dozen minutes answering questions about his two-pitch outing, his first after a 37-day layoff due to a flexor strain in his pitching elbow.
Once a kid in Dodger Stadium's seats, Giancarlo Stanton delivers again in LA, now at World Series
LOS ANGELES (AP) β Giancarlo Stanton slugs baseballs into the Dodger Stadium seats he used to watch from as a kid. Maligned by Yankees fans for much of his time in the Bronx, he's become among the most potent bats in New York's chase for title No. 28. His go-ahead, two-run drive in the sixth inning put the Yankees ahead in a 6-3, 10-inning loss in the World Series opener. Stanton homered for his fourth straight postseason game, a 116.6 mph shot off Jack Flaherty that was the hardest-hit ball in the Series since MLB started tracking in 2015.
Shiffrin leads skiing World Cup opener after 1st run with overall champion Gut-Behrami not starting
SOELDEN, Austria (AP) β American ski star Mikaela Shiffrin leads women's World Cup season opener after the first run. She is aiming for record-extending 98th career win. Shiffrin wasn't flawless in the opening section of the giant slalom but beat her opponents with a strong middle part and finish. Alice Robinson of New Zealand trailed by 0.22 seconds and Federica Brignone of Italy by 0.40. Defending overall champion Lara Gut-Behrami deciding to skip the race.
Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa clears concussion protocol and will start vs. Cardinals
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) β Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has cleared the NFL's concussion protocol and will play against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. It's his first start since being concussed in Week 2. The Dolphins designated Tagovailoa to return to practice on Monday after he spent about a month on injured reserve after suffering the third known concussion of his NFL career on Sept. 12. Tagovailoa has since met with numerous medical experts who deemed it safe for him to play again. Tagovailoa was examined Thursday by an independent neurological consultant, who cleared him to play Sunday.
