WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge put the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but still cede 4-2 in the series opener to the Midland RockHounds at Riverfront Stadium. The Wind Surge have been defeated in their last four series openers after tonight, with three of four losses being by two runs or less.

Travis Adams&nbsp;and Jack Cushing threw flawlessly through the opening three innings, as only three men reached base in that span.&nbsp;Kyler Fedko&nbsp;connected on the first hit by either side on a single to left in the bottom of the third but was stranded there after back-to-back popouts to end the frame.

Daniel Susac broke the scoreless tie on a single to left field, where Colby Thomas went first to third and later scored on an outfield error in the top of the fourth. Brennan Milone smoked a double to the left-center alley to bring home two more runs for the RockHounds two innings later.

Inning number eight saw three total runs come across on similar-looking hits. Adams received his fifth loss of 2024, now 3-5 on the season, after surrendering three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks in five and one-third innings. Besides the decision, Adams induced eight strikeouts, both a season-high and a Double-A high in Wichita dating back to last season.

Jon Rahm withdraws from the US Open with a left foot infection

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the U.S. Open with a foot injury. Rahm says in a social media post that he has consulted doctors and it was best for the long run that he not play this week at Pinehurst No. 2. Rahm had to withdraw last week at a LIV event in Houston with an infection between the end toes on his left foot. He was hopeful antibiotics would help heal the infection and let him play. Rahm told Spanish media he was worried about compensations to his swing if he tried to adjust for the injured foot.

Panthers take an extra day before 2,500-mile trek to Canada, moving closer to first Cup Final trophy

As the Edmonton Oilers boarded their flight back to Alberta for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday, the Florida Panthers remained in South Florida. They'll fly out Wednesday, which gives them an extra day's rest before a six-plus hour flight 2,543 miles to the other side of the continent. It helps that the NHL gave the teams two days of rest between Games 2 and 3, given this is the furthest distance between two teams in a final in NHL history. The series resumes with Game 3 in Edmonton on Thursday.

The US cricket team is closing in on a major achievement at the Twenty20 World Cup

The United States national cricket team already made a dent in the hierarchy of the game by beating Pakistan last week at the Twenty20 World Cup. The team's next game is set for Wednesday against India outside New York at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. The Americans aren't expected to win that one, but neither were they expected to beat Pakistan. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 25th home run with a 436-foot, two-run drive into the fountain behind the center-field seats, and the New York Yankees routed the Kansas City Royals 10-1 on Tuesday night for their 11th win in 14 games.

Giancarlo Stanton followed Judge in the seventh with a 446-foot shot to center against reliever Nick Anderson for his 16th home run of the season. Austin Wells hit a three-run homer in a four-run fourth off starter Brady Singer.

Back in the lineup after his first game off this season, Judge hit his 21st homer in his last 41 games and also singled in New York’s first run. Judge raised his average to .309 and is hitting .419 with 44 RBIs in his last 35 games after batting .197 through May 2.

“I’m trying not to take that for granted. It’s a lot of fun to witness and to watch what he’s doing on a nightly basis,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “He’s just, obviously — amazing physical talent and tools and ability, but now the experience that thousands of at-bats allow you to have that gets applied with that great talent and this is what you’re seeing.”

Despite lofty stats on the scoreboard each time he steps to the plate, Judge doesn't consider himself a hitter at the level of Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera.

“I try not to look up there. Even when I'm hitting .150, I try not to look up there. I try to look at (Juan) Soto's stats,” Judge said. "They're hitting .330, though, .330, 340, which is — that’s pretty impressive. So I don't know if I'll ever get there but we can work towards it, for sure. Yeah, .330 in November, I might feel locked in.”

AL-best New York (48-21) improved to 39-4 when Judge and Stanton homer in the same game, including the playoffs, and to 16-1 against the AL Central this season. The Yankees are a season-best 27 games over .500.

Boone got his 557th victory, moving past Billy Martin into sole possession of seventh among Yankees managers.

Marcus Stroman (6-2) allowed four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings, boosting his record to 4-0 in his last six starts. Ron Marinaccio struck out Drew Waters, stranding the bases loaded in the sixth.

Soto played right field for the Yankees and went 0 for 2 with a pair of walks before leaving with New York ahead 10-0 in the seventh. After missing the weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers because of left forearm inflammation, Soto was the designated hitter Monday and went 1 for 3 with a walk.

Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo returned after consecutive days off and went 0 for 4. He is 1 for 33 in June, dropping his average to .221.

“It’s a grind right now and this is what makes you appreciate the sunny days in this game,” Rizzo said, adding he feels “believe it or not, close.”

“It’s tough going through, but this is part of being a baseball player,” Rizzo said.

Anthony Volpe led off with his seventh triple of the season, Soto walked and Judge followed with an RBI single. Alex Verdugo’s groundout advanced the runners and Soto slid home on Stanton’s grounder to third baseman Maikel Garcia, slapping his left hand on the plate ahead of Salvador Perez’s tag.

Singer (4-3) gave up seven runs — six earned — and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

“I just wish I would have obviously made some better pitches there,” he said.

Kansas City has lost 10 of 15 following an eight-game winning streak.

“I’d be surprised if there’s a team that doesn’t go through this,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “They’re going to keep grinding away.”

Freddy Fermin homered off Marinaccio in the eighth. First baseman/outfielder Nick Pratto made his professional pitching debut with a one-hit ninth for Kansas City in his first big league appearance this season.

Royals: Kansas City did not have an update on OF Hunter Renfroe, who fractured his left big toe in the series opener. Renfroe was placed on the 10-day IL and INF Adam Frazier on the bereavement list. The Royals recalled Pratto and Waters from Triple-A Omaha.

Yankees: OF Jasson Domínguez (Tommy John surgery) was 1 for 5 with an RBI single for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and is batting .440 with two homers and three RBIs in six games with the RailRiders.

RHP Cody Poteet (2-0, 1.72 ERA) starts Wednesday for the Yankees and RHP Dan Altavilla (0-0, 0.00) for the Royals.

Voegele, the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, an All-Big 12 Second Team selection, a Big 12 All-Freshman Team honoree and an USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp invitee, had one of the best freshman seasons by a Kansas pitcher in program history. He finished his rookie campaign with a 7-2 record and a 3.89 ERA in 81.0 innings pitched.

The freshman righty threw eight quality starts and recorded 80 strikeouts compared to only 29 strikeouts. Voegele allowed three earned runs or less in 12 of his 15 starts. He finished the regular season tied for third in the Big 12 in wins (7), tied for fifth in ERA (3.32), seventh in opponent batting average (.228) and tied for seventh in innings pitched (76.0).

The Columbia, Illinois, native was picked in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but decided to attend Kansas instead of signing a professional contract.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Jerome Tang&nbsp;secured the services of one of the top shot blockers with the signing of elite big man&nbsp;Ugonna Onyenso&nbsp;(Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria/NBA Africa/Putnam Science Academy/Kentucky)&nbsp;to a Financial Aid Agreement on Tuesday (June 11).

A 7-foot, 247-pound center and former consensus top-25 recruit, Onyenso arrives at K-State after spending the last 2 seasons (2022-24) at Kentucky, where he was apart of 45 wins, including 25 in SEC play, and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (2023, 2024). He played in 40 games in his 2 seasons as a Wildcat, mostly this past season where he played in the last 24 games with 14 consecutive starts to end the 2023-24 season.

The native of Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria is a product of the NBA Academy Africa program, where he played in a number of high-profile international competitions in Europe, Mexico and the U.S., while he was one of the youngest players to ever make the senior men’s Nigerian National Team in 2020. As a senior, he helped lead prep powerhouse Putnam Science Academy in Putnam, Conn., to 20 consecutive wins and a National Prep Basketball Championship upon coming to the U.S., in 2020.

Onyenso, who declared for the 2024 NBA Draft before opting to withdraw on May 29, will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after his two seasons at Kentucky.

Onyenso developed into one of the top shot blockers in all of college basketball during his time at Kentucky, compiling 82 blocks in a mere 40 games played, including 66 in just 24 games in 2023-24. His 2.75 blocks per game average this past season ranks fifth in Kentucky school history among players with a minimum of 30 blocks. The average would have ranked sixth nationally had he played enough games to qualify for the list. The 66 total blocks tied for 32nd&nbsp;nationally, including the third-most in the SEC. The Wichita Sports Commission will host the 26th&nbsp;Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet, Wednesday, June 26th&nbsp;at Intrust Bank Arena. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals outfielder Hunter Renfroe fractured his left big toe when he fouled off two pitches from New York Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodón in the third inning on Monday night.

“He’s got it in the cold tub trying to take away some of the pain,” manager Matt Quatraro said after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/yankees-royals-score-rodon-ebf3ab63920e46825e3866a5549afcf5">Kansas City’s 4-2 loss.</a>

Renfroe fouled off seven pitches in all before striking out in a 12-pitch at-bat. He fouled the fourth pitch, a curveball, off the toe and fell to one knee and grimaced. He walked around in foul territory by the backstop, then stepped back into the batter’s box after about 45 seconds.

Two pitches later, Renfroe fouled another curveball off his foot and hopped away from the box. He felt the toe and got back in the box about 40 seconds later.

Quatraro said Renfroe told him he thought the first foul caused the break.

After striking out, Renfroe went to right field in the fourth inning but was removed at the start of the fifth.

“He went down in the cage and tried to move around a little bit,” Quatraro said. “When he was out there and he came back in and then they got to take his shoe off and check it out, and he said he couldn’t keep going.”

Renfroe, 32, is hitting .200 with six homers and 26 RBIs but is batting .363 with two homers and eight RBIs in his last 10 games. A veteran of nine major league seasons, he agreed in December to a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-renfroe-contract-be617f9481d4474e22f8886b48ea330d">$13 million, two-year contract</a>.

Renfroe is a .237 career hitter with 183 homers and 480 RBIs for San Diego (2016-19), Toronto (2020), Boston (2021), Milwaukee (2022), the Los Angeles Angels (2023), Cincinnati (2023) and Kansas City.

Longtime figure skating coach Frank Carroll, who over the course of a 60-year career helped guide six Olympic medalists at 10 Winter Games, including Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek, has died. He was 85. U.S. Figure Skating announced his death. It said Carroll died Sunday "after a battle with cancer." With a sharp wit and even sharper sense of humor, Carroll was instrumental in the success of American stars such as Lysacek, Kwan and Fratianne. He retired from coaching in August 2018, not long after his 80th birthday. Carroll was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1996 and the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2007.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carlos Rodón pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning in his return to the mound where he hit his low point last September, winning his seventh straight start and leading the New York Yankees over the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Monday night.

Juan Soto rejoined the Yankees lineup after missing a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers because of left forearm inflammation. He went 1 for 3 with a run and a walk as the designated hitter.

“I did all my treatment early today and I went to the cages making sure everything went fine and it did,” Soto said. “I've been seeing a lot of improvement. Definitely, it's not going to go away that quick.”

AL-best New York (47-21) won for the 10th time in 13 games and improved to 15-1 against the AL Central. Aaron Boone got his 556th victory, tying Billy Martin for seventh among Yankees managers.

After arriving in Kansas City at 3 a.m. following a Sunday night game in the Bronx, the Yankees gave Aaron Judge his first game off this season and rested slumping Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton.

Rodón (9-2) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings, giving up Freddy Fermin’s RBI single in the seventh. He has a 2.93 ERA in 14 starts.

Bobby Witt Jr. had an RBI single in the eighth off Ian Hamilton.

Michael Tonkin worked around a walk in the ninth for his second big league save and first since last year with Atlanta. Yankees closer Clay Holmes pitched three of the previous four days.

“The first month was less than ideal, but to be here now, it's all worth it,” said Tonkin, who has increased his two-seam fastball and slider usage. “It's good to get in a groove and get comfortable and be in a position where I feel like I'm not scared that I'm going to get tapped on the shoulder after every game.”

WICHITA, Kansas –&nbsp;Baseball ‘Round The Clock, once a staple of the NBC World Series in Wichita, is returning to the NBC in 2024 after an eight-year hiatus. Fans will have the opportunity to watch 11 games over the course of 33 hours, starting at noon on Saturday, July 27 and running through a 6:00pm game on Sunday, July 28.

“Baseball ‘Round the Clock has historically been one of the most exciting and unique events in the NBC World Series,” said NBC tournament director Katie Woods, “For the 90th&nbsp;tournament, it was time to bring it back. We’re ready to introduce a new generation of competitors to some of the same elements – Midnight Madness, the cuckoo clock check-ins and ‘I survived’ shirts – that diehard NBC fans remember.”

Overnight baseball has long been a tradition of the NBC. National Baseball Congress founder Hap Dumont came up with the idea of having late-night and early-morning games in the tournament to make games accessible to Wichita fans working swing and graveyard shifts, and tournament director Steve Shaad formalized the tradition in 1990 with the introduction of ‘Baseball ‘Round the Clock” as 17 games in 56 hours. BRTC ran every year after that at the NBC through 2016 before it was discontinued.

Fans ready to take on the challenge of surviving all 33 hours of Baseball ‘Round the Clock in 2024 can purchase their Baseball ‘Round the Clock (BRTC) tickets now at nbcbaseball.com for $20. BRTC tickets get participants entry in to all 11 games, as well as a punch card and wristband that will be used for check-ins at least once per game. SPRINGDALE, Ark.—The Wichita Wind surge lost the series finale in comeback fashion 3-2 to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Neither team scored until the eighth inning of the matinee, thanks to a pitcher’s duel.

Zebby Matthews&nbsp;struck out eight Naturals hitters through seven strong innings on the mound, while the pitching duo of Luinder Avila and Keylan Killgore stymied Wichita. The seven frames marked the longest stretch where the game was scoreless between both teams this week.

Jeferson Morales&nbsp;broke the scoreless tie on a two-run home run in the top of the eighth for his third round-tripper of the season. Northwest Arkansas loaded the bases in the home half of the frame and tied the game on a two-out, two-run single to right by Rodolfo Durán.

The Naturals matched their eighth by putting men everywhere in the bottom of the ninth before Shervyen Newton singled up the middle to secure a come-from-behind 3-2 victory. Despite the loss, the Wind Surge took the second series between the clubs in Springdale by winning four of the seven games.
