The 22-year-old Clark is up to 321 assists in her first year in the WNBA, breaking the mark of 316 set last season by Alyssa Thomas of the Connecticut Sun. Christian McCaffrey will miss another game for the 49ers and could be headed to IR

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey has been ruled out of this weekend's game for the San Francisco 49ers because of his lingering calf and Achilles' injuries. He could be headed to injured reserve. McCaffrey was held out of practice after experiencing pain the previous day. He was ruled out of the game Sunday against Minnesota after expressing hope earlier in the week that he could play. Coach Kyle Shanahan said the team will discuss whether to shut McCaffrey down for at least four more weeks by placing him on injured reserve after saying earlier in the week that wasn't under consideration.

Johnson had 156 yards passing to go with 110 yards rushing, and D.J. Giddens added 86 yards rushing and a score for Kansas State, which improved to 3-0. Noah Fifita had 268 yards passing and Tetairoa McMillan caught 11 balls for 138 yards for Arizona, which fell to 2-1. The schools agreed to the matchup before Arizona left the Pac-12 for the Big 12. Neither had enough time to find an replacement opponent, so Kansas State and Arizona kept the game without it counting in the conference standings.

Tiger Woods has another surgery on lower back to relieve pinched nerves

Tiger Woods is on the mend again after a sixth surgery on his lower back. Woods posted a brief statement on social media that he had microdecompression surgery on his lumbar spine Friday morning. That's also known as a microdiscectomy. It's his first surgery on his lower back since December 2020. Woods says the surgery went well and he hopes it alleviate the back spasms he's been experiencing this year. The recovery can be anywhere from eight to 12 weeks. Woods wasn't scheduled to play again until December in the Bahamas and then with his son in the PNC Championship.

Nelly Korda leads Americans to a record-setting 6-2 margin on first day of Solheim Cup

GAINESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Top-ranked Nelly Korda won both her matches to carry the United States to a record 6-2 lead over Europe on the first day of the Solheim Cup. Korda teamed with Allisen Corpuz to beat Esther Henseleit and Charley Hull in alternate shot, and then paired with Megan Khang in better ball to overwhelm Georgia Hall and Leona Maguire 6-2 in the afternoon. Korda came into the Solheim Cup with a winning record in three appearances, but Europe captured the cup each time. The Europeans' path to four in a row got much more difficult after its poor start at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in northern Virginia.

Former MLS MVP Carlos Vela is finalizing a deal to return to the club, an AP source says

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles FC is finalizing a deal to re-sign former Major League Soccer MVP Carlos Vela for the playoff push, a person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Friday night because the deal hasn't been completed. The move is expected to be formally announced in the coming days. Vela was the first player in LAFC history when the Mexican star left Spain to sign with the expansion MLS club, which began play in 2018. Vela was a dominant MLS forward for a half-decade with LAFC, and he won the league's MVP award in 2019.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Hutch High Salthawks dominated the statistics with a 13-0 victory over Valley Center Friday night in Gowans Stadium.

Hutch High Senior running back Kade Smith led the offense with 228 net rushing yards on 35 carries scoring both Salthawk touchdowns on the night with one yard runs.

But it was the defense that really shined holding the Hornets to only 3 net yards of rushing on 13 attempts.&nbsp;

Valley Center could only muster 42 yards of total offense but only trailed by 7 going into the final quarter.

After holding Valley Center in the first possession of the game, Hutchinson went on a 5 play, 42 yard drive to take the lead 7-0 with 6:19 remaining in the first quarter.

The Salthawks had other opportunities to score, but fumbles and penalties kept the game close until Smith scored again on a one yard run early in the fourth quarter. The PAT was blocked, but the 13 points for Hutchinson was good enough to earn their first win of the 2024 season.

Hutchinson (1-1) will travel to Maize next Friday night to take on the Maize Eagles (0-2).

🏈 Salthawk Smith too much for Valley Center

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Salvador Perez and Kyle Isbel hit home runs and drove in two runs each, Alec Marsh struck out 11 in 5 1/3 innings, and the Kansas City Royals snapped Pittsburgh’s four-game winning streak with an 8-3 victory over the Pirates on Friday night.

Perez’s two-run shot to the bullpens in left-center capped a six-run second inning when the Royals broke a scoreless tie. Isbel’s solo homer in the fourth pushed the lead to 7-0. Adam Frazier added a solo home run in the eighth.

“We just got the momentum rolling early and it was fun to watch,” Isbel said.

The 34-year-old Perez, a nine-time All-Star catcher, has 27 home runs and 103 RBIs this season.

“He’s incredible,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “That’s why he’s in the discussion to be a Hall of Famer. “You don’t see players produce the way he does at that position on a year-in and year-out basis. He’s clearly a leader in the community and on this team with the way he goes about his business.”

Marsh (8-8) allowed only one run and the 11 strikeouts matched a career high. It was the second-year right-hander’s first win since July 10.

With Minnesota's loss Friday, the Royals moved 2 1/2-games ahead of the Twins for the second American League wild card. With Cleveland’s loss, the second-place Royals pulled within three games of the Guardians in the AL Central.

The Royals are in contention a year after going 56-106.

“It’s amazing,’ Marsh said of pitching in a pennant race. “There is no other team I’d rather do it with. This team is amazing. Everyone comes here and treats it just like another game. No one is putting any pressure on anyone. We know it’s September and these games mean a little more than earlier in the season but we’re just having fun.”

The Pirates fell to 14-23 since Aug. 4, when their record was 56-54 and they were 2 1/2 games out of the National League’s third wild card.

“Good breaking ball,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said of Marsh. “Did a really nice job with it, kept us off balance, was able to use it in-zone and then use it as a chase.”

Luis Ortiz (6-6) was tagged for seven runs — four earned — on five hits in four innings. His throwing error on Frazier’s chopper helped set up the Royals’ big second-inning.

Yuli Gurriel hit an RBI single, and Isbel drove in a run with a double before Tommy Pham’s two-run single made it 4-0. After Bobby Witt Jr. struck out, Perez homered.

Witt went 1 for 5, dropping his major league leading batting average to .332.

The Pirates scored in the sixth when Oneil Cruz doubled and scored on Joey Bart’s single. Bryan Reynolds hit a sacrifice fly and Cruz added an RBI single in the ninth.

Royals: RHP Michael Lorenzen (strained left hamstring) allowed one run in 3 1/3 innings on Friday for Triple-A Omaha in his second minor league outing since going on the injured list on Aug. 28. Lorenzen will likely be activated next week. … RHP Hunter Harvey (tightness in mid-back) has resumed throwing but there is no timetable for his return.

Pirates: LHP Marco Gonzales (strained left forearm) had left flexor tendon repair surgery, and an internal brace placed in his left ulnar collateral ligament. Eligible for free agency after the World Series, Gonzales is expected to miss most of next season. … 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes (lower back inflammation) could begin playing catch next week but the Pirates are unsure if he will return this season.

Royals RHP Michael Wacha (12-7, 3.34 ERA) faces RHP Mitch Keller (11-9, 3.85) on Saturday. Wacha is 11-3 with a 2.62 ERA in his last 19 starts since May 9. Keller has lost four of his last five decisions.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Avery Johnson threw two touchdown passes, Dylan Edwards returned a punt 71 yards for a score and No. 14 Kansas State beat No. 20 Arizona 31-7 on Friday night in a rare nonconference matchup of new Big 12 rivals.

The loss ended Arizona’s nine-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Johnson had 156 yards passing and 110 yards rushing, and D.J. Giddens added 86 yards rushing and a score, as Kansas State (3-0) rebounded from a lackluster road with over Tulane with an emphatic victory over the desert Wildcats.

Noah Fifita had 268 yards passing for Arizona (2-1) with an interception. Tetairoa McMillan had 11 catches for 138 yards, but the potential first-round NFL draft pick was unable to turn any of those grabs into a big play or touchdown.

The schools agreed to the matchup before Arizona left the Pac-12 for the Big 12. And with neither having enough time to find a replacement opponent, Kansas State and Arizona kept the game but without it counting in the conference standings.

The teams traded grinding, time-consuming touchdown drives to start the game, but otherwise the first 30 minutes was plagued by penalties, mental mistakes and dumbfounding miscues from two teams trying to make a statement.

Arizona failed to cover a poor punt that Edwards returned untouched for a touchdown. On the next drive, Fifita lazily threw over the middle into double coverage and was picked off by Kansas State’s Keenan Garber in the end zone.

Johnson made perhaps the most embarrassing gaffe. He was sacked at the Arizona 19 with 24 seconds left in the first half. On the next play, the freshman needed only to step out of bounds to stop the clock and bring on the field-goal team, but he instead reversed field and ran the other way, allowing the clock to expire without the chance for an attempt.

Kansas State still led 14-7 at the half, and the mistake didn’t matter in the end.

The fleet-footed Johnson began to sling it in the second half, leading his team on back-to-back TD drives. The first featured a 48-yard pass to Jayce Brown on third-and-12, setting up Johnson’s scoring toss to Brayden Loftin. The next included a 21-yard throw to Loftin before Giddens plowed into the end zone to give Kansas State a 28-7 lead.

Kansas State stuffed Arizona on fourth down a few minutes later, and merely had to run out the clock in the fourth quarter.

Arizona might have fared better had it not repeatedly hurt itself with flags. It committed 30 yards worth of penalties on a single drive in the first half, and finished with nine penalties for 74 yards in the game.

Kansas State’s defense had something to prove after allowing Tulane to throw for 342 yards and pile up 491 in last week’s 34-27 comeback win. The Wildcats held Arizona to 324 yards of total offense.

Arizona: At No. 12 Utah on Sept. 28 in the Wildcats’ first true Big 12 game.

Kansas State: At BYU next Saturday night.

🏈 No. 14 K-State dumps No. 20 Arizona in nonconference matchup of Big 12 foes

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kylin James scored on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line with 1:51 left to lift UNLV past Kansas 23-20 Friday night at Children’s Mercy Park.

The Jayhawks are playing all their games away from Lawrence, Kan., this season because of construction on their stadium.

UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka was just 7-for-18 passing for 86 yards, but he rushed for 113 yards.

Jalon Daniels was 12-for-23 passing for 153 yards, with two interceptions for Kansas (1-2). He had two rushing touchdowns.

Daniels’ second interception of the game gave UNLV the ball at the KU 4-yard line, but the Rebels only got a 23-yard field goal from Caden Chittenden.

Kansas answered with a 41-yard field goal by Tabor Allen to stretch the lead to 20-16 in the fourth quarter.

But UNLV (3-0) used a 14-play, 75-yard drive that took 9:31 off the clock to take the late lead.

After forcing an opening three-and-out, Kansas responded with a 12-play, 81-yard touchdown drive, capped by Daniels’ 11-yard run. The Rebels responded with an 11-play drive but had to settle for a Chittenden 38-yard field goal.

Daniels then scampered 33 yards, untouched off the right tackle, to cap a 94-yard drive to give Kansas a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter.

Kansas’ defense stiffened again, stopping UNLV on third-and-7, forcing a 27-yard field goal by Chittenden. Allen then extended the lead to 17-6 with a 35-yard field goal with 3:17 left in the first half.

Kansas was driving for another score when Daniels threw his fifth interception of the season. It was returned 46 yards to the Kansas 33. With the first-half clock running down, Sluka found Jai’Den Thomas in the flat and Thomas turned it into a 27-yard touchdown with no time left on the clock to pull within 17-13 at halftime.

UNLV: The Rebels need to work on the long passing game. Sluka attempted seven passes of at least 20 yards — several significantly longer — and missed on all seven.

Kansas: Daniels has the talent to be a star, but he has to cut down on the turnovers. He threw one interception in the season opener and had three picks in the loss at Illinois. His first-half pick Friday kept UNLV in the game and his second-half interception set up the Rebels for a chip-shot field goal.

UNLV: The Rebels will open the Mountain West Conference season with a home contest against Fresno State on Sept. 21.

Kansas: The Jayhawks will open Big 12 Conference play with a road contest at West Virginia on Sept. 21.

The Dragons switched spots this week with Iowa Western after a 38-37 Hutchinson victory last Saturday in Council Bluffs, Iowa in the second-straight No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle in that series' history.

With the latest No. 1 ranking, the Blue Dragons have been ranked No. 1 in 30 of the 56 polls released during the Dallas era. The Dragons have been ranked in the NJCAA Top 3 in 31 consecutive polls and have been ranked in 36 straight polls, the third-longest run in program history.

Hutchinson got 175 rushing yards and a touchdown from back-to-back KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week winner&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/jordan_jr._waymond_h58l">Waymond Jordan Jr.</a>&nbsp;Quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/collier_samari_f7ro">Samari Collier</a>&nbsp;had 245 total yards (156 passing, 89 rushing) with three total touchdowns against Iowa Western as the Blue Dragons amassed 455 total yards with no turnovers in the victory.

The Blue Dragons and Tritons meet for the third-straight season as ranked opponents. When the teams met in 2022 at Gowans, Cole Segraves booted a 39-yard walk-off field goal in overtime to lead No. 2 Hutchinson over No. 7 Iowa Central 31-28. Last year, defensive back Ryan Nolan tied a Blue Dragon single-game record with three interceptions as No. 1 Hutchinson defeated No. 5 Iowa Central 27-2.

The Tritons (1-1) rolled to a season-opening 56-7 victory over Community Christian (Mich.) College on opening weekend. Iowa Central was then stunned in its home opener last week by then-No. 13 Highland 14-13. Both teams did not score in the second half.

The Tritons bring a stingy defense into Saturday's contest with the Blue Dragons. Iowa Central is allowing only 10.5 points and 195.0 total yards per game this season.

The Blue Dragons counter with offensive averages of 40.0 points and 478.5 yards per game. Hutchinson ranks No. 3 in rushing offense 309.5 yards per game with Jordan leading the nation individually in rushing with 373 yards.

Saturday's game opens a stretch of three-straight home games for the Blue Dragons. After the first of two bye weeks next weekend, the Blue Dragons play host to Ellsworth on September 28 and Dodge City on October 5.

🏀 WSU gets first 2025 MBB commit

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge got shut out 5-0 by the Tulsa Drillers at Riverfront Stadium. After the win, The Wind Surge officially yielded the Propellor Series to the Drillers with the final three games of the season remaining.

Cory Lewis&nbsp;averaged one strikeout per frame through six in his 13th start of the season with Wichita. He’s reached that amount in seven of his last nine starts at the Double-A level.

Bubba Alleyne connected on a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning, his second this week and sixth of the season, to right field. He’s homered from both sides of the plate at Riverfront Stadium in the final week of the regular season.

Tulsa tallied four more runs on a trio of singles two innings later to push ahead to a 5-0 advantage.

All that the Wind Surge managed at the plate was a knock by&nbsp;Tanner Schobel&nbsp;back in the second inning. Drillers pitching combined to retire the final 21 hitters en route to their third straight victory.

Lewis takes the loss to drop to 2-6 on the season. In six innings, he surrendered one run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Pac-12 and the departing schools will likely be on the hook for about $110 million in exit fees and penalties to the Mountain West.

(AP) — Gio Lopez threw three touchdown passes and Fluff Bothwell ran for 143 yards and two scores — in the first half — as South Alabama steamrolled FCS-member Northwestern State 87-10, setting the school's scoring record and giving new coach Major Applewhite his first victory. Jamaal Pritchett returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown after South Alabama's defense forced a three-and-out on the opening possession and the Jaguars (1-2) took a 7-0 lead just 96 seconds into the game.It was all downhill from there for Northwestern State (0-3), which trailed 24-10 after the first period, 52-10 at halftime, and 80-10 heading to the fourth quarter.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The NFL averaged 21.0 million viewers per game during the league’s opening week, making it the most-watched Week 1 on record.

The league and Nielsen said Wednesday morning that the per-game average on TV and digital platforms was a 12% increase over last year. Nielsen began electronic measurement of viewing in 1988.

All told, 123 million people saw at least part of one game, its highest total for an opening week since 2019.

“A great start with the viewership. It was great to be back and a lot to be excited about,” said Hans Schroeder, the NFL’s executive vice president of media distribution. 

NBC had the most-watched game, with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ravens-chiefs-score-e11de910772704671858be9565d1aa10">defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City’s 27-20 victory over Baltimore in last Thursday’s opener</a>&nbsp;averaging 29.2 million on TV and digital. It was NBC’s second-largest regular season game since 2006, when it acquired the “Sunday Night Football” package. The Sunday night game between Detroit and the Los Angeles Rams, which the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lions-rams-score-montgomery-stafford-8dce062f6543a494b6cd18e39ec35f60">Lions won 26-20 in overtime</a>, averaged 22.7 million, a 3% jump from last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It was the second-most watched live event in Peacock’s four-year history, behind last season’s AFC wild card round game between Kansas City and Miami.

“I think the numbers even exceeded our expectations. Brazil was great and the game was an exciting one,” Schroeder said. “On a new night and window, I think that was a phenomenal start for us.”

“Monday Night Football” on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN+ averaged 20.4 million for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jets-49ers-rodgers-score-756aa152efe4dd1b84990ea6a57112e6">San Francisco’s 32-19 win over the New York Jets</a>&nbsp;despite most DirecTV customers not being able to receive it due to its carriage dispute with Disney (the only way they could watch it is if their ABC affiliate was not owned by Disney, which was not the case for DirecTV customers in New York and San Francisco).

The average was down from the 22.7 million for last year’s opener between the Jets and Buffalo.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sophomore forward Haley Rogers had a five-point game and sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Edwards had a three-point effort while the Blue Dragon defense dominated as the No. 18-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team authored a 3-0 KJCCC victory over Coffeyville on Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Blue Dragons improve to 4-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 (10 points) in conference play. Coffeyville dropped to 0-5 and 0-4. Hutchinson plays a key early-season road match at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Barton in Great Bend.

Hutchinson dominated possession for the entire match, hardly letting the Red Ravens anywhere near their offensive zone. The Blue Dragons cast 35 total shots. The Dragons had a season-high 17 shots on goal. The Dragons created 13 corner kicks Coffeyville goalkeeper Rose Forero Calabuig had an opponent-high 13 saves.

Coffeyville had no shots on goal in the match and just two shot attempts overall. That’s the 52nd time in Blue Dragon history they have held an opponent without a shot on goal.

Rogers led the Blue Dragons offensively with two goals and an assist. This was Rogers’ second multi-goal game and third game with five or more points this season.

Edwards had a goal and an assist for her second multi-point game of the season. Edwards has at least one point in 5 of 6 matches this season.

Rogers and Edwards are tied for the team lead with six goals each.

Sophomore forward Katharina Marx had her team-high sixth assist.

Freshman goalkeeper Marina Lopez (1-0-1) earned her first career shutout and the second shutout by the Blue Dragons this season.

The Blue Dragons scored their fourth goal of the season directly off a corner kick. Rogers delivered a perfect corner from the right of the goal to the left post that Edwards headed in for a 1-0 lead with 35:38 remaining in the opening half.

The Blue Dragon sophomore duo switched places for the second goal. Edwards’ shot was saved by Forero Calabuig, but the loose ball went right to Rogers, who hammered her shot home from 10 yards out into the open net for a 2-0 lead with 14:07 to play in the opening half.

The lone Dragon tally of the second half started with Marx making a relentless run to the goal from the right side. She fired a shot that deflected to Rogers, who scored from 12 yards out to give the Blue Dragons a 3-0 lead with 34:32 remaining in the second half.

The Dragons then opened a six-point lead in the second set only to see the Busters go on a 9-1 run to even the match with a deuce-set victory in extra point. After Garden City owned the third set and Hutchinson the fourth, the fifth set was tied at 3-3 before Garden City used a 3-0 run to take command.The Blue Dragons are now 2-1 in five-set matches this season. Freshman outside hitter Atlyn Proctor had 18 kills to lead the Blue Dragons. Freshman outside hitter Viktoria Graf had 11 kills, one block assist, eight digs and two service aces. Sophomore right-side hitter Tiana Simmons had nine kills.Freshman setter Ellie Suber finished with 20 assists. Sophomore setter Shelbi Wilson had 18 assists.Defensively, freshman Addy Foster finished with 18 digs. Foster added two ace serves.
