Coach Mike McDaniel confirmed the move first reported by NFL Network, saying that Huntley is being added for depth behind current No. 2 quarterback Skylar Thompson. Tagovailoa remains in the NFL's concussion protocol after leaving a 31-10 loss to Buffalo last Thursday. McDaniel said there's still not enough information to know whether Tagovailoa will go on injured reserve. Thompson likely will start when Miami plays at Seattle on Sunday.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) — The NASCAR playoffs head to Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee this weekend for the final race of the first round. He finished 23rd and was dropped to 13th in the playoff standings, six points behind Ty Gibbs on the postseason cutoff line. Hamlin says he can win Saturday night at Bristol and earn the automatic spot into the second round.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Monday, the Kansas City Royals released their 2024 organizational awards. The annual recognition highlights minor-league standouts in various categories.

Royals No. 2 prospect Blake Mitchell was named the 2024 George Brett Hitter of the Year. He headlines a list of seven winners after a terrific minor-league season.

KC right-handed prospect Steven Zobac won the 2024 Paul Splittorff Pitcher of the Year Award. Meanwhile, Tyler Tolbert received the 2024 Willie Wilson Baserunner of the Year Award for his work on the basepaths.

The Royals are set to honor each individual winner on Futures Night at Kauffman Stadium on Friday, Sept. 20. There will also be an on-field pregame ceremony ahead of first pitch against the San Francisco Giants.

The players will also participate in an autograph session for fans at Gate A from 5:30-6:15 p.m. that night. Additionally, each winner will make community visits earlier in the day.

Here is a look at each Royals organizational winner:

George Brett Hitter of the Year: Blake Mitchell

Mitchell showed great improvement in his first full professional season. The Royals were banking on Mitchell, who was selected eighth overall in the 2023 MLB Draft, to showcase his immense potential at a high level.

This season, Mitchell hit .238 with 18 home runs and 50 RBIs for Single-A Columbia.

The Royals utilized Mitchell in the middle of the lineup. He is the rare left-handed hitting catcher that is also a run producer. Mitchell showed his athleticism with 16 doubles, three triples and 25 stolen bases.

Mitchell also logged 62 games at catcher and 44 games as a designated hitter. He recently got promoted to High-A Quad Cities.

“It’s a testament to our scouting department for making the right selection,” Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said. “It’s our first-round pick and you don’t want to miss on your first-round pick. Blake is a guy that (Royals vice president of scouting) Danny Ontiveros, who was running the 2023 draft, felt really strongly about his abilities.

“In his first full season, he has performed and caught really well. To be the George Brett Award winner is a pretty special thing for a first-year player.”

Paul Splittorff Pitcher of the Year: Steven Zobac

Zobac entered the 2024 minor-league season on a mission. He looked to improve in High-A Quad Cities and prove he could handle a featured role in a starting rotation.

This season, Zobac has delivered with consistent production. He has made 24 starts across two minor-league levels and amassed an 11-8 record with a 3.64 ERA and 123 strikeouts. The 11 victories are the second-most by a Royals minor-league pitcher.

In June, Zobac was named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Month. He allowed three earned runs in 23 innings (four starts).

Zobac was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He has a 3.57 ERA in 44 career minor-league games.

Frank White Defensive Player of the Year: Carson Roccaforte

Roccaforte has made strides in High-A Quad Cities. He has committed just one error while patrolling center field for the River Bandits.

This season, Roccaforte has 294 putouts and four assists in 299 chances. He is one of 11 minor-league players to log 1,000 or more innings defensively.

Roccaforte is the No. 28 prospect in the Royals’ minor-league system.

Willie Wilson Baserunner of the Year: Tyler Tolbert

Tolbert continues to rack up Royals organizational awards. Last season, Tolbert was the 2023 George Brett Hitter of the Year.

Now, Tolbert is recognized as the top baserunner in the Royals minor-league system. He has 48 stolen bases in 53 attempts this season.

The Royals promoted Tolbert to Triple-A Omaha in recent weeks. He got experience with the big-league roster in spring training as a minor-league invitee.

⚾ Royals announce 2024 award winners

PUEBLO, Colo. — Hutchinson Community College’s Charlie Box started his first fall tournament of the season off with a bogey on the very first hole on Monday.

Thirteen birdies later, the Blue Dragon sophomore found himself tied for the individual lead at the CSU-Pueblo Samuel Proal Classic at Walking Stick Golf Club.

Box leads four Blue Dragon golfers sitting in the Top 12 after 36 of the 54-hole tournament and has Hutchinson firmly in second place only three strokes off the team lead in its 2024 Fall Season opener.

The Blue Dragons posted team rounds of 6-under 282 and 4-under 284 to sit in second place after play on Monday with a 10-under 566. Hutchinson trailed tournament host CSU-Pueblo by three strokes. CSU-Pueblo had rounds of 284 and 279 for a 36-hole total of 13-under 563. Dodge City is third after play on Monday at 572 (283-289). Garden City is fourth at 578 (287-291).

The final round is Tuesday morning with a 10:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start.

After Box opened the tournament with a bogey 5 on the first hold, the Blue Dragon sophomore reeled off seen birdies in the next 15 holes. Box had seven total birdies, two bogeys and nine pars in an opening round 67, a career-low round for a Par-72 course.

Box followed that round with six birdies and three bogeys and he started the round off with four birdies in the first five holes. Box finished at 3-under 69. He is tied with Garden City’s Jack Dyer, who shot back-to-back 68s on Monday.

Sophomore David Razinskas combined for nine birdies and four bogeys and is tied for 10th after play on Monday at 3-under 141. Razinskas opened with a 71 and followed that up with a 70.

Freshman Jaydon Carruthers is tied for 10th at even-par 144. Carruthers opened with a 1-under 71 and finished the second round with a 1-over 73.

Freshman Jack Northgraves is tied for 12th  1-over 145. Northgraves started off with a 73 and posted a 72 in the afternoon round.

Sophomore Louis Ross had rounds of 74 and 73 on Monday and is tied for 22nd at 3-over 147.

Sophomore Tyler Walker and freshman Cal Schultz were playing as individuals on Monday. Walker is 17th  at 2-over 146. Walker had rounds of 74 and 72. Schultz had a nine rebounds in the afternoon round. Schultz carded a 6-over 78 to start, but posted an even-par 72 in the afternoon round. He is tied for 25th at 150.

Hutchinson trailed tournament host CSU-Pueblo by three strokes. CSU-Pueblo had rounds of 284 and 279 for a 36-hole total of 13-under 563. Dodge City is third after play on Monday at 572 (283-289). Garden City is fourth at 578 (287-291).The final round is Tuesday morning with a 10:30 a.m. (CT) shotgun start.After Box opened the tournament with a bogey 5 on the first hold, the Blue Dragon sophomore reeled off seen birdies in the next 15 holes. Box had seven total birdies, two bogeys and nine pars in an opening round 67, a career-low round for a Par-72 course.Box followed that round with six birdies and three bogeys and he started the round off with four birdies in the first five holes. Box finished at 3-under 69. He is tied with Garden City’s Jack Dyer, who shot back-to-back 68s on Monday.Sophomore David Razinskas combined for nine birdies and four bogeys and is tied for 10th after play on Monday at 3-under 141. Razinskas opened with a 71 and followed that up with a 70.Freshman Jaydon Carruthers is tied for 10th at even-par 144. Carruthers opened with a 1-under 71 and finished the second round with a 1-over 73.Freshman Jack Northgraves is tied for 12th 1-over 145. Northgraves started off with a 73 and posted a 72 in the afternoon round.Sophomore Louis Ross had rounds of 74 and 73 on Monday and is tied for 22nd at 3-over 147.Sophomore Tyler Walker and freshman Cal Schultz were playing as individuals on Monday. Walker is 17th at 2-over 146. Walker had rounds of 74 and 72. Schultz had a nine rebounds in the afternoon round. ⛳ Box tied for lead in first fall tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Colt Keith hit a two-run homer, Matt Vierling had three hits while driving in the go-ahead run, and the Detroit Tigers rallied from an early four-run deficit to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-6 on Monday night in a crucial game for their playoff hopes.

Pinch-hitter Wenceel Pérez had the tying two-run double for Detroit, which began its final trip of the regular season by moving within 1 1/2 games of Minnesota for the final AL wild-card spot. The Twins lost to Cleveland earlier in the night.

“It was an incredible win because of how we were able to do it,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “We didn't do much early, although our at-bats were pretty good. Started to chip away a little bit, a couple of really big swings, and then we held on."

Brenan Hanifee (1-1) earned the win in relief for Detroit, allowing one run and three hits over 2 1/3 innings. Jason Foley finished off a solid bullpen performance, working a perfect ninth to earn his 24th save and second in two days.

“The bullpen has been doing it all year for us,” Keith said, “and they did it again tonight.”

Bobby Witt Jr. hit a grand slam to stake Kansas City to a 4-0 lead, and he added a bunt single for a five-RBI game. But the Royals otherwise kept squandering chances to score, just as they did in their loss to the Pirates on Sunday.

Sam Long (3-2) took the loss for Kansas City, allowing three runs while retiring just two batters in relief of Seth Lugo.

“A lot of stuff happened in that game, clearly. It was an intense back-and-forth, both teams putting everything on the line,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “You get out to a lead, you feel pretty good. You know they're not going to go away.”

Indeed, the Royals started their final homestand by taking advantage of what Detroit could not: the bases loaded.

The Tigers packed them in the third before Keith grounded out to second to end the threat. But when Kansas City loaded the bases in the bottom half — a leadoff walk from Adam Frazier, a single by Yuli Gurriel and a bunt single from Kyle Isbel — Witt hit a 1-1 pitch what seemed like a mile high and over the left-field wall for his second grand slam of the season.

Reese Olson, making his first start since straining his right shoulder July 20 in Toronto, was lifted one batter later, after Salvador Perez blooped a single to right. He allowed four runs, four hits and a walk while throwing 50 pitches.

The Tigers still trailed 5-1 in the fifth when they began their comeback, scoring once on Witt's throwing error and twice more when Keith homered to right. And after Witt delivered an RBI single in the bottom half for his 200th hit of the season, Detroit pushed across three more runs in the sixth off Long and John Schreiber to take a 7-6 lead.

“We had trouble putting them away from the very beginning. There weren’t a lot of easy outs,” Quatraro said. "You have got to give them credit the way they battled their at-bats and drove (Seth) Lugo’s pitch count up. Then they continued to put good at-bats up. I thought ours were pretty good, too. We just didn’t get the big hits like they did.”

The Royals had two aboard with one out in the seventh, and the first two on base in the eighth, but failed to score both times.

“That was one of the best games we've played as a team,” Keith said. “I don't think anybody thought that we were out of it."

Tigers: RHP Ricky Vanasco was optioned to Triple-A Toledo to make space for Olson on the roster. Vanasco pitched two scoreless innings in two appearances with the club, earning his first big league win on Sept. 5 in Oakland.

Royals: RHP Chris Stratton, who went on the injured list Saturday, was diagnosed with a Grade-1 flexor strain and will be shut down for at least a week. ... RHP James McArthur left Monday's game after retiring two batters with right elbow tightness.

Detroit: RHP Casey Mize (2-6, 4.47) is on the mound against Kansas City for the second game of the series Tuesday night.

Kansas City: LHP Cole Ragans (11-9, 3.32) faces the Tigers after striking out 12 against them in an 8-3 win on May 22.

HutchCC went 1-0-1 last week with a 3-0 win over Coffeyville on Wednesday, and a 1-1 tie at Barton on Saturday.

Hutchinson will host No. 9 Kansas City on Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex with a 6 p.m. kickoff.&nbsp;

Four Jayhawk Conference teams are ranked, Butler is No. 6, Kansas City No. 9, Cowley No. 14 and Hutchinson is No. 17.

🏈 Blue Dragons remain No. 1 heading into bye week

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Coming off a dominating 31-7 victory over No. 20 Arizona last Friday, Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;has been named The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week, the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl announced Monday.

The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity.

This is the third time in Klieman’s six seasons at K-State that he has earned the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Week honor after also picking up the accolade following the 2020 and 2022 Oklahoma games.

“Coach Klieman has built the Kansas State football program into a consistent winner and a formidable force in the Big 12,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “This was an impressive victory early in the season that has the Wildcats poised to be in contention for a spot in the new 12-team College Football Playoff.”

K-State’s win over 20th-ranked Arizona was the first regular-season non-conference home win over a ranked opponent since 2002. The Wildcats are now 3-0 for the third time under Klieman and the first time since 2021.

Ranked No. 13 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, Kansas State begins its Big 12 slate on Saturday night in a 9:30 p.m. (CT) contest at BYU that will be televised by ESPN.

🏈 K-State's Klieman named Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — This was supposed to be the breakthrough year at Kansas, when a program Lance Leipold built from nationwide laughingstock to respectability took another step into the upper echelon of the Big 12 and, just maybe, the College Football Playoff.

All of which could still happen. But it would take a dramatic turn of events.

After starting the season in the AP Top 25, the Jayhawks have lost back-to-back games to fall out altogether. The latest was Saturday night,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/unlv-kansas-football-score-daniels-sluka-kylin-james-59b073c9766295412279e5853ac732d6">a 23-20 loss to UNLV</a>&nbsp;in which Kansas dragged itself down with nine penalties, a defensive collapse that led to a touchdown to end the first half, and more ill-advised throws from veteran quarterback Jalon Daniels.

The one-time Heisman Trophy candidate had four turnovers the previous week&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-illinois-score-football-09f40ab35fb1adbbf7788c593687f02b">in a 23-17 loss at Illinois</a>. Daniels threw two more picks against the Runnin’ Rebels, giving him six this season, and he has just 442 yards and three TDs passing.

“He’s playing hard, but he’s not playing like the Jalon that we know,” Leipold admitted, before adding: “I’m going to put this on me. I’m not going to put it on the kids right now. We’ve got to figure out a better way to stay in rhythm and do it.”

The Jayhawks’ defense has kept them in both of their losses, holding UNLV to just 267 yards on Saturday night. That included 92 yards in the second half, and 39 on the ground, when Kansas should have been building upon its 17-13 halftime lead.

Instead, the Jayhawks managed only a field goal in the fourth quarter. And when they did get the ball back following UNLV’s go-ahead touchdown with 2 minutes to go, they were unable to produce another field goal that would have forced overtime.

Just how bad has the offense been under new coordinator Jeff Grimes? Kansas is last in the Big 12 in yards passing, averaging a meager 164.3 per game, and better than only Colorado, Iowa State and Houston in scoring at 28.3 points per game.

“We have to be able to finish,” Daniels said. “Our defense was out there on the field making plays left and right, and our offense has to be out there helping those guys out. We have to go in there and find a way to be better.”

Right away — because the sense of urgency is real with Big 12 play starting at West Virginia on Saturday.

Kansas is coming off back-to-back bowl games, and its nine wins were its most since 2007, when Mark Mangino was still on the sideline and the Jayhawks won the Orange Bowl. The school is in the midst of a massive rebuild of its on-campus football stadium, along with renovations that touch just about every other aspect of the program. And that energy has trickled down to a once-weary fanbase that packed Children’s Mercy Park for the Jayhawks’ two nonconference home games.

And with Oklahoma and Texas departing the Big 12 for the SEC this season, there were plenty of folks around Kansas — like a lot of other schools in the league — who viewed a sudden power vacuum atop the conference. Someone would wrestle control of the Big 12, and its spot in the College Football Playoff, and why couldn’t it be the Jayhawks?

That opportunity still exists, because their two losses have been out-of-conference games. The playoff system presently in place means those defeats are far less damaging than they might have been in past years.

Kansas will play its remaining home games at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Chiefs, and whether its 80,000 seats will be filled or empty for the Big 12 schedule will reflect whether the Jayhawks have been able to get back on track.

“We’ve got to reset all over again,” Daniels said. “At the end of the day, we still have the standard we go by every single day. We believe that abiding by that standard day-in and day-out, no matter what happens, will allow us to get the outcome we want.”

Pacheco left Sunday's game in the final minute, was seen in a walking boot following the win. He had 19 carries for 90 yards and caught five passes for 21 yards in the win. He has rushed for 135 yards and a score in the two games this season.

The Chiefs will now have Samaje Perine and Carson Steele on the depth chart at running back.

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge ended the regular season on top 4-2 over the Tulsa Drillers at Riverfront Stadium. Wichita combined for 10 hits in the season finale.

C.J. Culpepper&nbsp;struck out five batters over as many innings in his final start of the season for the Wind Surge. He kept Tulsa off of the scoreboard with only three hits going against him on the afternoon.

Walker Jenkins&nbsp;brought in his first Double-A RBI in the form of Ben Ross on a two-bagger to right field in the home half of the fifth.

Alex Isola&nbsp;homered off of the scoreboard in the next inning to tie the Wichita career home run mark at 32.&nbsp;Dalton Shuffield&nbsp;singled to center to push the Wind Surge ahead 3-0 through six frames.

Both sides traded runs in the seventh with the Drillers getting on the board after a solo shot by Brendon Davis to left field. Isola singled home another runner to give a three-run cushion to Wichita.

One more Tulsa run scored on a wild pitch in the eighth before&nbsp;Jarret Whorff&nbsp;finished out his second save of the season with a strikeout of Bubba Alleyne in a 4-2 victory.

Culpepper earns his first Double-A win to finish the season at 1-1 in the Texas League after his best start at the level.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Isiah Kiner-Falefa had three hits, including a go-ahead single in the fifth inning, as the Pittsburgh Pirates avoided a three-game sweep with a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Billy Cook lined a single to left to start the fifth and&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/AlexJStumpf/status/1835395599278948756" target="_blank">scored from first on a hit and run</a>&nbsp;when Kiner-Falefa shot one to center past a diving Bobby Witt Jr. at short to put the Pirates ahead 3-2. Kiner-Falefa also singled in the first and sixth innings.

“Billy never hesitates. He never breaks stride,” Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said. “We get a run on a groundball to center field just because of the fact of his awareness. Outstanding.”

Kansas City’s Brady Singer (9-11), who gave up four runs on six hits and four walks with six strikeouts in five innings, later walked Rowdy Tellez with the bases loaded to bring the Pittsburgh lead to 4-2.

“In the fifth, (Singer) just kind of lost command a little bit there,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Unlike him. But overall, I thought his stuff was fine, just his command was a little bit off.”

Carmen Mlodzinski (3-5) pitched a perfect fifth inning in relief of Pirates starter Jared Jones, who allowed two runs and six hits in the first four. Aroldis Chapman struck out one in a perfect ninth for his ninth save.

The Royals, four games back of first-place Cleveland in the AL Central, had the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth. Colin Holderman walked Witt Jr. to bring in a run but Dennis Santana entered to get Salvador Perez to fly out and limit the damage.

“We needed to capitalize more,” Quatraro said. “We put a lot of pressure on them. We drove up the pitch count early. We had baserunners in several innings and just couldn’t come up with the big hit to really take the lead or break it open.”

Bryan Reynolds gave the Pirates an initial lead on a double into the left-field corner after Kiner-Falefa led off the first with a base hit.

Yuli Gurriel tied it 1-1 on a sacrifice fly in the second after Kansas City started the inning with a Paul DeJong single between two walks.
