Patsy Jo Welden, 73, passed away February 20, 2025, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. She was born October 12, 1951, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Ed and Elizabeth Schnitzler Welden Haines. She was a 1969 graduate of Buhler High School and received her RN from Hutchinson Community College. She had worked as an RN for different places in the area, as well as an X-Ray tech. Patsy was a member of the Wesleyan Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Dawn Bilson, Topeka; sisters, Stephanie (David) Chambers and Linda (Mark) Collins, all of Hutchinson; and grandchildren, Laura, Zachariah, Katherine, and Michael.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, a brother, Dale Haines, and a sister, Edna Baker.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, March 3, 2025, at Diversicare of Hutchinson dining area. Light snacks will follow the service and all are invited. Shirley Sue Frank Murphy, 90, formerly of Hutchinson, died February 23, 2025, at Homestead of Eudora. She was born December 9, 1934, in Hutchinson, to Barney Garrett and Selma Ora (Bekker) Cole.

Shirley graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1952. She attended Hutchinson Community Junior College, and graduated from Wichita State University with a bachelor’s degree in education. Shirley was an administrative assistant for the Board of Education prior to becoming a teacher. She taught accounting, shorthand, marketing, typing, general business and computer application at Hutchinson High School and was instrumental in starting Hutch High Alternate School. &nbsp;She taught at HHS for almost 25 years. Shirley and her husband Pat were co-founders of the Hutchinson Watersports Club, and spent most of their time at the lake. Shirley always had a passion for volunteering. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, PTA President, at the Hospital Auxiliary and other organizations in Hutchinson. Shirley was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and P.E.O. Chapter D.

On January 6, 1952, she married Patrick P. Frank, in Hutchinson. They shared over 46 years of marriage, prior to his death on May 13, 1998. On August 30, 2003, she married William J. “Bill” Murphy Jr., together they shared eight years of marriage, prior to his death on July 14, 2012.

Shirley is survived by: her daughter, Cindy (Doug) Lewis of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; daughter in-law, Judy Frank of Basehor; grandchildren, Emily Caplinger of Leavenworth, Kyle (Katie) Frank of Olathe, great grandchildren, Kale, Evan and Dylan Caplinger and Will and Wrenley Frank; sister, Patti Deck of Phoenix, AZ; stepsons, Joe (Donna) Murphy, Mike (Robin) Murphy, their children and grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husbands, Patrick Frank and Bill Murphy Jr.; and son, Randall “Randy” Frank.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Elliott Chapel, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2025, at Elliott Mortuary, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m.

After 94 years of life, Lucille “Lupe” Vieyra passed away in the presence of family, on February 23, 2025, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson. She was born November 15, 1930, in Hutchinson, to Luís and Elvira (Magaña) Martínez. She worked for Eaton Corporation, retiring after 34 years. Lucille took great pride working as a female in a male-dominated industry.

An avid sports enthusiast, Lucille always enjoyed watching her favorite sports, most especially if it was her KU basketball team or her Kansas City Chiefs. Basketball was a particular favorite, and she enjoyed many games at the NJCAA tournament. Another favorite of hers was catching the lively marching bands going down Main Street around the Kansas State Fair.&nbsp;

She enjoyed tending to her yard, sitting outside in her garage chatting with her neighbors, and shopping trips to Goodwill. A lifelong devout Catholic, she served her church community by helping with funeral luncheons at Saint Teresa Catholic Church, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Nothing brought her more joy than moments spent with family, like going out to A&amp;W for a root beer, taking family photos, or simply being around each other. Two things she always taught her children were the importance of a clean home and because, Lucille was shaped by the struggles of the Depression, the vital mantra: "If you do not need it, do not buy it!"

Lucille married Genaro “Hank” Vieyra, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, they later divorced. He passed away November 28, 2020.

Survivors include: her children, Cindy Keim, Carolyn (Tim) Powers, and Chris Vieyra; grandchildren, Jon Keim, Joshua Keim, Jeremy Keim, Jenniffer Powers, Robert (Jessica) Powers, Amanda (Michael) Shaffer, and Bradley Vieyra; great-grandchildren, Henry Powers, Charlotte Powers, Jack Powers, Taylie Mehl, and Ryan Shaffer; sister-in-law, Shirley Martinez; bonus family, Cathy and Gayle Johnson and family; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, Jack, Joe, Luís and John; sister, Margaret; son-in-law, Steven Keim; grandson-in-law, Christopher Simon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

William Francis “Bill” Pitts, 78, died February 23, 2025, at his home. He was born July 10, 1946, in Wichita, to Willis F. and Betty L. (Morris) Pitts.

Bill graduated from Buhler High School in 1964 and received his pressroom certification in 1968.  He worked as a pressroom foreman for the Hutchinson News and Rockwell/Goss Publishing Company. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, winemaking, and writing poetry.  Above all, he loved his family unconditionally.  Bill was a member of the Pressman Union.

On September 11, 1964, he married Jerrie Ann Davis, in Hutchinson.

Bill is survived by: his wife of almost 61 years, Jerrie of Hutchinson; daughters, Niki Pitts-Silhan (Ed) of Marion, Cynthia Denton (Ray), and Shannon Kirk, all of Hutchinson; siblings, Tom Pitts (Earlene) of Buhler, Janeen Hyson (Kenny) of Haven, Joyce Welch of Temple, TX, Deborah Coral (Luis) of Hutchinson, Sam Pitts (Terry), and Jason Pitts (Jennifer) of Burrton; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by:  his parents; infant son, William F. Pitts, Jr.; granddaughter, Shelby Olson; and a sister, Patricia Turner.

Diana Marie Doerfler, 83, died in her home on February 21, 2025. &nbsp;Diane, as she was known to friends and loved ones, was born April 6, 1941 to parents Paul Joseph and Anna Marie Luea. &nbsp;She was the oldest of 9 siblings, consisting of 6 younger sisters and 2 brothers. &nbsp;She grew up around Ellis, KS, graduating from Ellis High School in 1959.

She married Harold Phillip Doerfler on September 1, 1962, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ellis. &nbsp;The couple moved to Hutchinson, KS in 1964. &nbsp;Their oldest daughter, Lucy, was born in 1965. &nbsp;In 1966 they gave birth to their son Paul. &nbsp;Finally, their youngest daughter, Melissa, was born in 1967.

Diane worked at Star Lumber in Hutchinson for over 20 years before retiring. &nbsp;After her retirement she enjoyed working on home improvement projects, assisting her children with theirs as well as getting their help with her own. &nbsp;She also continued gardening for many years, a tradition she carried with her through her childhood growing up on a farm and helping her parents garden after they had moved into Ellis. &nbsp;Diane continued to travel well into her 70s, making her annual migration back home with help from her grandson Dylan, in the later years.

Diane is survived by her siblings, Harold Doerfler – her husband of 63 years, their three children Lucy (Jessee) Tracy of Hutchinson, Paul (Heather) Doerfler of Wichita, and Melissa (Tony) Gray of Hutchinson, 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Lela Elizabeth “Betty” Galloway, 89, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at Longleaf Bee Cave, Bee Cave, TX.

Betty was born on August 17, 1935, in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Kenneth Jack and Helen (Epperson) Anderson. On October 15, 1988, she married E. Dexter Galloway in Lawrence, KS. They shared 20 years of marriage before Dexter passed way in 2008.

Betty graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1953. She worked for Avco Financial Services as a manager and retired after 20 years of service. She was the past President of Heart of Kansas Quilt Guild and the past President of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America at Emanuel Lutheran Church. She attended and was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dexter Galloway; sister, Jacquelyn Blackwelder; brother, Jack Anderson; granddaughter, Jennifer Spall; and a son-in-law, Matthew Lee.

Betty is survived by two daughters, Melissa Lee and Kim (Joseph) Heinen; a son, Scott (Susie) Evans; eight grandchildren, Marci (Russell) Colliau,, Kirsten (James) Spall, Kyle (Britni) Evans, Alissa (Davis) Tilford, Anna Munn, Travis (Cailie) Evans, Paul (Vanessa) Heinen and Callie Evans; nine great grandchildren, Lauren Colliau, Ryan Colliau, Riley Colliau, Robert Spore, Kierra Simmons, Knox Cutter, Cal Tilford, Demi Evans and Wes Tilford.

Myrna Beth (Becker) Moorman, 88, died February 20, 2025, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born January 2, 1937, in the rural Bushton home of her parents, John Henry and Virgie Blanche (Peterson) Becker. &nbsp;

Myrna attended Rice County Union 4 Grade School and Bushton schools, graduating in 1954 from Bushton Rural High School and Hutchinson Junior College in 1957.

Myrna was employed for 26 years at Hutchinson Community College, in the registrar's office and then as secretary/administrative assistant to the president.

Myrna was a charter member of the Hutchinson Chapter of Sweet Adelines. &nbsp;She belonged to Countryside Baptist Church and served as their adult choir director for fifteen years.

On July 29, 1955, she married Harold Eugene Moorman at Bushton. &nbsp;He died February 25, 2010, after they shared almost 55 years of marriage.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, James, Virgil and Charles; parents-in-law, William L. and Laura C. Moorman; stepfather-in-law, Roy Peterson; sisters-in-law, Fern Newton, Dorothy Becker, and Georgia Becker; brothers-in-law, Bob Newton, Bill Fleming, John Clark, and Neil Thompson; granddaughter, Jessica Castle; and great-grandson, Dane Moorman.

Survivors include: &nbsp;children, Randall (Lorie) of Smithville, MO, Susan (Dan) Castle of Hutchinson, and Patricia (David) Monis of North Chelmsford, MA; sister-in-law, Karen Thompson of Hutchinson; stepbrother-in-law, Don (Barbara) Peterson of Clifton; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Erlinda Vieyra, 90, died February 19, 2025, at her home in Hutchinson. She was born April 6, 1934, in Dodge City, Kansas, to Antonio and Lus (Perez) Flores, Sr.

Erlinda graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1953. She worked for the family restaurant, Anchor Inn, and as a paraprofessional for USD 308.

In her spare time, she enjoyed playing bingo, tending to her garden, playing volleyball, rolling strikes in her bowling league, and leading both boy and girl scouts.

Erlinda was a spiritual and faithful catholic.  She was an active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson. She was president of the OLG Women’s Altar Society and a member of their Spanish choir.  

Erlinda poured her heart and soul into her family as a devoted homemaker, earning the title of the world’s best mother and grandmother. Above all, nothing brought her more joy than spending precious time with her family.  

On June 7, 1958, she married Trunkalino Velasquez “Trunkie” Vieyra, in Hutchinson. They shared over 60 years of marriage, prior to his death on June 1, 2019.

Erlinda is survived by: her children, David (Irene) Vieyra, Michael (Kathy) Vieyra, Edward (Marla Booher) Vieyra, Raylene (Mike) Selgrade, Lawrence (Michelle) Vieyra, Barbara Vieyra Luna, and Carolyn (John Dye) Vieyra; siblings, Antonio (Rachel) Flores, Jr., Jane (Santos) Amaya, Dolores “Lola” Flores, Cindy Flores, Rosie Landron, Daniel (Carol) Flores, Larry Flores and his companion Connie Johnson, Gregory (Susan) Flores, Sr.; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Jerry was a saltwater fish enthusiast and enjoyed fishing, bowling, watching movies and going to church. He relished spending time with his family, especially his three children. Jerry was proud of his Native American heritage and was a member of the Miami tribe in Oklahoma.&nbsp;

Jerry is survived by: son, Gage Benson of Pretty Prairie; daughters, Brakelle and Persia Bullock of Maryland; sisters, Tammie (Jake) Fletchall of Texas and Jennie (Shane) Patterson of South Hutchinson; brothers, Tito, Miguel (Amy), and Mario (Lana) Enriquez, all of Hutchinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Gary graduated from Hutchinson High School with the class of 1970. He worked at Doskocil Food Service and owned his own detail shop along with a car lot. Gary proudly worked as a supervisor for the City of Hutchinson where he retired from. He enjoyed working and servicing vehicles. Mostly, Gary loved spending time with his granddaughters playing his guitar and listening to music with them.&nbsp;

In 1971, Gary married Dana Conrad. They shared nearly 54 beautiful years together.

Gary is survived by: beloved wife, Dana LaClair, of Hutchinson; son, Jason (Laura) LaClair of Colorado; Mindy LaClair of Hutchinson; granddaughters, Katelyn and Audrey Wilson of Hutchinson; brother, Kevin LaClair of Kansas City; sisters, Debra Bigler of Utah and Kelley LaClair of Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Gary W. LaClair |1952-2025|

Jesse Martin Hensel, 81, of Hutchinson, died February 20, 2025, at Hospice House, with his loving family by his side. He was born October 6, 1943, in Dodge City, to Walter M. and Goldie (Bunch) Hensel.

Jesse graduated from Dodge City High School in 1962, and loved to tell of playing the trombone in the marching band in the 1961 Rose Bowl Parade. He also played basketball and baseball, was in a bowling league and was a member of the Walther League.

He stayed in Dodge City to begin his collegiate career at Dodge City Community College. There, he was a member of the Conquistadors basketball team, which beat Casper College 73-68 to win the 1964 National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Championship, an accomplishment that landed he and his teammates in the Dodge City CC Athletics Hall of Fame. He then went on to play basketball at Kansas Wesleyan University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He later attended Emporia State University, where he earned his master’s degree in education.

Jesse honorably served in the United States Army from 1966-1968, then embarked upon a 29-year career as an educator, teaching physical education at Sherman Middle School in Hutchinson.

One of his proudest accomplishments was the 34 years he spent as a college and high school football, basketball and softball official, working games across the state of Kansas with a crew of guys that became his closest friends. He delighted in sharing tales of his adventures on the gridiron and hardwood, the players he watched ascend from the high school game to college and pro sports stardom, and the many after-game meals he shared with his officiating crews. Even after he retired, those who watched games with him got a master class in officiating, as he couldn’t help but critique the refs.

He maintained his passion for sports in retirement, watching just about every sporting event that came on TV, but most importantly his beloved New York Yankees and Kansas Jayhawks basketball. He also spent the months of August to January poring over fantasy football notes. For many years he competed in a league with his childhood best friend, Jim Reidl, and his sons, and it became one of his favorite pursuits.

When he wasn’t tending to his fantasy football team, he spent his days collecting sports cards and delving into the world of Hot Wheels collecting. He was well-known to many retail workers from Hutchinson to Emporia, as he obsessively sought the special Treasure Hunt versions of the miniature automobiles. He could tell you what new models were due to be released, the day and time delivery trucks typically arrived at area stores and when new stock would be put on the shelves. In that hobby, he found some kindred spirits his family often heard about.

He also spent many years playing Texas Hold ‘Em at the Moose Lodge in Hutchinson. His family isn’t really sure whether he ended his card-playing career up or down in earnings, but he was rich with stories he brought home from each session, and boy, did he love telling his stories. 

Many of those stories were relayed to his son-in-law, Brent Adams, a broadcaster and journalist, whom he sometimes accompanied to basketball games for which Brent was doing play-by-play for radio. He’d share the tales of his playing and officiating days and spend the drive home breaking down the officials’ performance. They loved to talk sports and looked forward to fishing outings, where they tried to outdo one another with the biggest bass and shared many laughs along the way.

All of those pursuits began to take a backseat when his true passion came around: his grandkids. Holding that national championship trophy couldn’t have compared to the smile he beamed the first time he held his twin granddaughters, Brinley and Madison Adams, in 2016, his granddaughter Elaina Adams in 2018, or when he got his first grandson, Milo Hensel, later that year. He delighted in the time he spent talking and playing card games with them when they would visit, and even challenged himself to learn technology to be able to regularly FaceTime with them. He loved buying cards and thoughtful gifts for them and never missed an opportunity to show them how much they were loved and appreciated.

He was also fiercely proud of his daughters, Stacey and Stephanie. He often shared stories of his fond memories of their childhood and beamed with pride when he spoke of their professional accomplishments and how they handled the challenges of motherhood.

And one of the sweetest ways he will be remembered was for the love and care he shared for his wife, Rita Clara Young, whom he married on August 16, 1969. They were married for 55 years, and built a relationship dedicated to God and family.

Jesse was a gentleman and spread his kindness to those around him. He went out of his way to offer a compliment to those he knew, and many he didn’t, with genuine sincerity.

He was a long-time member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he frequently served as an usher, and on the board.

He is survived by: his wife, Rita; daughters, Stacey Hensel of Brooklyn, NY, Stephanie Adams and husband Brent of Spring Hill, TN; grandchildren, Madison, Brinley, and Elaina Adams, and Milo Hensel.

Jesse was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Don.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 407 E. 12th, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.  </figure>Jesse Martin Hensel, 81, of Hutchinson, died February 20, 2025, at Hospice House, with his loving family by his side. He was born October 6, 1943, in Dodge City, to Walter M. and Goldie (Bunch) Hensel.Jesse graduated from Dodge City High School in 1962, and loved to tell of playing the trombone in the marching band in the 1961 Rose Bowl Parade. He also played basketball and baseball, was in a bowling league and was a member of the Walther League.He stayed in Dodge City to begin his collegiate career at Dodge City Community College. There, he was a member of the Conquistadors basketball team, which beat Casper College 73-68 to win the 1964 National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Championship, an accomplishment that landed he and his teammates in the Dodge City CC Athletics Hall of Fame. He then went on to play basketball at Kansas Wesleyan University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He later attended Emporia State University, where he earned his master’s degree in education.Jesse honorably served in the United States Army from 1966-1968, then embarked upon a 29-year career as an educator, teaching physical education at Sherman Middle School in Hutchinson.One of his proudest accomplishments was the 34 years he spent as a college and high school football, basketball and softball official, working games across the state of Kansas with a crew of guys that became his closest friends. He delighted in sharing tales of his adventures on the gridiron and hardwood, the players he watched ascend from the high school game to college and pro sports stardom, and the many after-game meals he shared with his officiating crews. Even after he retired, those who watched games with him got a master class in officiating, as he couldn’t help but critique the refs.He maintained his passion for sports in retirement, watching just about every sporting event that came on TV, but most importantly his beloved New York Yankees and Kansas Jayhawks basketball. He also spent the months of August to January poring over fantasy football notes. For many years he competed in a league with his childhood best friend, Jim Reidl, and his sons, and it became one of his favorite pursuits.When he wasn’t tending to his fantasy football team, he spent his days collecting sports cards and delving into the world of Hot Wheels collecting. He was well-known to many retail workers from Hutchinson to Emporia, as he obsessively sought the special Treasure Hunt versions of the miniature automobiles. He could tell you what new models were due to be released, the day and time delivery trucks typically arrived at area stores and when new stock would be put on the shelves. In that hobby, he found some kindred spirits his family often heard about.He also spent many years playing Texas Hold ‘Em at the Moose Lodge in Hutchinson. His family isn’t really sure whether he ended his card-playing career up or down in earnings, but he was rich with stories he brought home from each session, and boy, did he love telling his stories. Many of those stories were relayed to his son-in-law, Brent Adams, a broadcaster and journalist, whom he sometimes accompanied to basketball games for which Brent was doing play-by-play for radio. He’d share the tales of his playing and officiating days and spend the drive home breaking down the officials’ performance. They loved to talk sports and looked forward to fishing outings, where they tried to outdo one another with the biggest bass and shared many laughs along the way.All of those pursuits began to take a backseat when his true passion came around: his grandkids. Holding that national championship trophy couldn’t have compared to the smile he beamed the first time he held his twin granddaughters, Brinley and Madison Adams, in 2016, his granddaughter Elaina Adams in 2018, or when he got his first grandson, Milo Hensel, later that year. He delighted in the time he spent talking and playing card games with them when they would visit, and even challenged himself to learn technology to be able to regularly FaceTime with them. He loved buying cards and thoughtful gifts for them and never missed an opportunity to show them how much they were loved and appreciated.He was also fiercely proud of his daughters, Stacey and Stephanie. He often shared stories of his fond memories of their childhood and beamed with pride when he spoke of their professional accomplishments and how they handled the challenges of motherhood.And one of the sweetest ways he will be remembered was for the love and care he shared for his wife, Rita Clara Young, whom he married on August 16, 1969. They were married for 55 years, and built a relationship dedicated to God and family.Jesse was a gentleman and spread his kindness to those around him. He went out of his way to offer a compliment to those he knew, and many he didn’t, with genuine sincerity.He was a long-time member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he frequently served as an usher, and on the board.He is survived by: his wife, Rita; daughters, Stacey Hensel of Brooklyn, NY, Stephanie Adams and husband Brent of Spring Hill, TN; grandchildren, Madison, Brinley, and Elaina Adams, and Milo Hensel.Jesse was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Don.Cremation has taken place. Phyllis Sherrill Bachus, 93, died February 15, 2025, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. She was born October 14, 1931, in Bazine, Kansas, to Enceil and Letha (Carey) Frazier.

Phyllis graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1949, she earned her nursing degree in 1977. She dedicated her life to caring for others as a registered nurse for a few years, rising to become a nurse supervisor before retiring from Hutchinson Hospital.

In her spare time, Phyllis loved to read, crocheting, knitting, and cooking. In addition, Phyllis had an undeniable passion for music, whether she was playing the piano or listening to her favorite songs.

On January 31, 1951, she married Toss K. Bachus in Hutchinson. They shared over 64 years of marriage, prior to his death on March 23, 2015.

Phyllis is survived by: her son, Philip Bachus of Independence, MO; granddaughter, Stephanie (Aubrey) Espinosa of Trophy Club, TX; great-grandson, John (Olivia) Espinosa of Trophy Club, TX; great-granddaughters, Isabel and Olivia Espinosa; and brother, Forest Frazier of Ness City, KS.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; and daughter, Beverly Withroder.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday March, 8, 2025, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Keith Dellenbach officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.

Mikel V. “Mike” O’Leary, 57, of Hutchinson, died February 16, 2025, at Ascension Via Christi St. Teresa, Wichita. He was born March 24, 1967, in Coffeyville, his parents were John R. “J.R.” and Joyce A. (Schrag) O’Leary. On December 3, 1967, Mike was baptized at the First Methodist Church, Kiowa.

Mike graduated from Smith Center High School in 1985 and attended Burlington Vermont Culinary Arts School and Hutchinson Community College. He was currently working on his degree in Social Services at Wichita State University and was planning to graduate in the Spring of 2025. Mike worked as a chef for the El Dorado Country Club and Lawrence Country Club. He was a passionate listener to Zig Ziglar’s motivational speeches, his presentations inspired Mike to go into social work. Mike enjoyed watching many kinds of sports, his favorite teams were K-State, WSU, and the Kansas City Chiefs. He was an avid reader, reading all genres of books. Most of all Mike enjoyed helping others and spreading kindness.

Mike is survived by: his mother, Joyce O’Leary of Hutchinson; aunts and uncles, Marvin and Fae Schrag of Hutchinson, Roger and Peggy Tacha of Oakley, and Davieda Dick of Bradenton, FL; cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by: his father, J.R. O’Leary; grandparents, Harold and Rosalia O’Leary and David and Frieda Schrag.

Billy Wayne Madden, 98, passed away at Brookdale Senior Living in Great Bend, KS on Feb. 17, 2025. The youngest of 5 children he was born in rural Ellinwood, KS on Mar. 2, 1926 to parents Carl Sr. and Hazel (Smith) Madden. Bill was a lifetime resident of Barton and Rice Counties where he worked as a farmer and stockman. He married Wanda Scheufler at First Baptist Church, Ellinwood on Sept. 7, 1949.

Bill was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Ellinwood. He enjoyed collecting John Deere memorabilia, hunting, and growing watermelons which he shared with friends and neighbors. He was always accompanied by his four-legged  faithful companion Pete.

Survivors include his wife of 75 years, Wanda Madden, Great Bend, KS; children Pam Hendricks (Kerry), Great Bend, KS and Tamara Madden, Hutchinson, KS; grandchildren Rick Hendricks, Kevin Hendricks(Abby), Thomas W. Madden (Elizabeth), Julie Boeckman (Matt), Breiane Madden, Tyler Young; 15 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by siblings, Carl Madden Jr., Bette Kennedy, Dorothy Davis, Martha Marshall; son, Thomas T. Madden; grandson David Madden; infant great-grandchild, Isaiah Madden.

Terra Gale Brodie, 61, passed away Saturday, February 15 ,2025 at Kansas Medical Center in Andover, KS, surrounded by her family and friends. Terra was born June 30, 1963, in Wichita, KS, the daughter of Delmar and Johanna Brodie.

Terra grew up in Great Bend, Ks and graduated from Great Bend High School. In 1983, Terra married Donald Raybern, they later divorced. She worked for Jacam in Sterling, Ks for many years and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Terra is proceeded in death by her parents; and one brother-in-law, Jimmy.

She is survived by one daughter, Jana Armbruster and significant other Tyler; two sons, Jeffrey (Tiffany Riley) and Jeremy (Bobbie) Raybern; 16 grandchildren, Kyler, Kinzie, Kale, Blakelee, Brayton, Maddison, Abigail, Gage, Nicolette, Decklyn, Taylor, McKynlea, Macilynn, Maggie, Marci, Easton; and one great grandchild, Kane; one brother, Troy (Michelle) Brodie and two nephews, Blake and Aaron.

Wayne Dale McCrary, 67, died peacefully and with dignity on February 17, 2025, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, surrounded by his family, all the saints and angels, and the prayers of his extended family and friends.  He was born April 24, 1957, in Santa Cruz, CA, to William Donald and Leona Arlene (Fought) McCrary.

Wayne attended Larned High School. He retired from Krause Plow after almost 40 years of service working in their experimental shop.  Wayne enjoyed fishing, hunting, collecting coins, metal detecting, motorcycle riding, and putting puzzles together.  He was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #612.  Wayne and his wife, Elaine, volunteered with church ministries and were active with Marriage Encounters and Retrouvaille. Most of all, Wayne loved living life with love, especially with his family and friends and with an extra special place for his grandbabies.

On September 23, 1978, he married Elaine Becker, in Maize.  

Wayne is survived by:  his mother, Leona McCrary; his wife of almost 47 years, Elaine McCrary, both of Hutchinson; children, Rachel Gibson (Eric) of Hutchinson, Wendy McCrary-Lawson (David) of Kansas City, KS, Joe McCrary (Brittany) of Blue Springs, MO, and Josh McCrary (Brianna) of Weatherford, OK; brother, William “Dan” McCray (Jan); grandchildren, Isabel, Isaac, Hazel, Wyatt, Beckham, and Jayden; numerous nieces and nephews; and a large extended family.

He was preceded in death by:  his father, William “Don” McCrary; and brothers, Willard “Dude” McCrary, Walter “Donny” McCrary, and Warren “Dean” McCrary.

Harley Dean Meier, 90, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Sunshine Meadows, Buhler, KS.

Harley was born on August 4, 1934, in Hutchinson, KS, the son of Harvey and Jette Marie (Buss) Meier. On July 2, 1954, he married Patricia in Hutchinson, KS, to this union they were blessed with four sons, Artie, David, Mark, Daniel, and one daughter, Julie.

He was preceded death by his parents; wife, Patricia; sister, Violet Strong; brother, Elmer Meier; three sons, David Meier, Mark Meier, Daniel Meier; and one niece, Kim Martin.

Harley is survived by one son, Artie (Teri) Meier; one daughter, Julie Meier; daughter-in- law, Joanna Meier; eight grandchildren, Brandon Meier, Jason Meier, Clint Meier, Ryon Meier, Desiree Penner, Matthew Meier, Ethan Meier, Tad Meier; one sister, Joyce Bliss; brother-in-law, Chet Martin; 16 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.

On July 2, 1954, he married Patricia in Hutchinson, KS, to this union they were blessed with four sons, Artie, David, Mark, Daniel, and one daughter, Julie.He was preceded death by his parents; wife, Patricia; sister, Violet Strong; brother, Elmer Meier; three sons, David Meier, Mark Meier, Daniel Meier; and one niece, Kim Martin.Harley is survived by one son, Artie (Teri) Meier; one daughter, Julie Meier; daughter-in- law, Joanna Meier; eight grandchildren, Brandon Meier, Jason Meier, Clint Meier, Ryon Meier, Desiree Penner, Matthew Meier, Ethan Meier, Tad Meier; one sister, Joyce Bliss; brother-in-law, Chet Martin; 16 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS. Francine Kay Babcock, 72, of Hutchinson, KS, died peacefully on Friday, February 14, 2025, with her family at her side. Kay was born April 26, 1952, in Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Jimmie and Alice Duft.

Kay graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1970 and then graduated from Sidney’s Hairdressing College and was a hairdresser for 45 years. She also enjoyed painting homemade crafts. Kay married Gary Babcock on July 6, 1970, in Hutchinson.

Survivors include her husband, Gary; daughter, Heather Leigh Redd (John); two grandsons, Dalton (Raven) Redd, Trenton (Grace) Babcock; great granddaughter, Eliza Redd; two brothers, Steve (Babette) Duft, Curtis Duft and a sister, Paula Duft.

Kay is preceded in death by; her parents, Jimmie and Alice Duft.

Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Reno County and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave, Hutchinson, KS 67502.

Judith Marie “Judy” Gonzales, 79, of Hutchinson, died February 15, 2025, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. She was born March 9, 1945, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Everett Lee and Lyla Marie (Pitts) McCoy.

Judy graduated from Partridge High School and Salt City Business College. She was a homemaker. Judy was a member of South Hutchinson Christian Church.

She is survived by: her sons, Robert Gonzales and wife Janet of Hutchinson, Jeff Gonzales and wife Gina of Hutchinson, Sean Gonzales and wife Kelly of McPherson; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; sister, Lynette Woods and husband Russ of Manhattan, Kansas; brothers, Tom McCoy and wife Brenda of Hutchinson, Michael McCoy and wife Kathy of Washington, Kansas; and many extended family members.

Judy was preceded in death by: her parents; son, Jason Gonzales; sister, Marilyn Morris; brothers, Ted McCoy and Robert McCoy.

Judy’s wishes were to be cremated and no service held.

Frederick Lee “Fred” Barta, 94, of Little River, Kansas, passed away on February 15, 2025, at his home, surrounded by family.

Fred was born in rural Ellsworth, Kansas on February 3, 1931, the son of the late Helen Libby (Doubrava) and Ferdinand “Fred” Barta.

Fred graduated from Little River High School with the class of 1950. He was a lifetime Little River resident.

Fred proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1961 and achieved the rank of Corporal. He served in the Korean war and his dedication to serving his country was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Fred worked as a farmer and rancher his entire life.

Fred was united in marriage to Patricia Louise “Pat” Barta (Fail) on May 3, 1952. They enjoyed 67 years of marriage until her passing on April 20, 2020.

Fred was a member of the Congregational Church, Little River, where he also served as a member of the men’s fellowship. Fred also spent many years serving his community through various organizations, including, the Lion’s Club, American Legion, 4-H, FFA, ULAR Watershed District, Rice County Soil Conservation District, the Goodfellow Organization, MTC Board and the USD 444 School Board. Among many other accomplishments, Fred was most proud of his Outstanding Young Farmer of the year award in 1963 and Little River Citizen of the Year award in 1981.

Fred enjoyed playing and watching baseball throughout his entire life. He rarely missed any local Little River Redskins events. Fred was quite the card shark and spent many hours with dear friends.

Fred is survived by his four children, Carla Shepherd of Hutchinson, Kyle Barta (Lori) of Little River, Ryan Barta (Jamie) of Little River and Emma Shepherd of Hutchinson; a son-in-law, John Shepherd; three grandchildren, Christopher Barta, Michael Barta (Tessa) and Megan Kane (Jake); and seven great-grandchildren, Mackinze, Steele, Elliot, Morgan, Bryleigh, Juli and Zayna. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Elrene Stowe, Thelma Sporn and Marianne Gawith.

A visitation will be held Friday, February 21, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the Congregational Church, Little River, with Pastor Ted Weis officiating. Burial will follow at Bean Memorial Cemetery, with military honors by Ft. Riley Honor Guard.

Charles “Chuck” Arthur Garrett, 49 years of age, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Swedish Medical Center, Englewood, Colorado. Charles was born on October 28, 1975, in Hutchinson, Kansas to Carl E. Flenoid-Brown and Norma R. Garrett- Butler.

He had an adventurous soul that led him to explore countless hobbies and experiences. Whether it was riding motorcycles, casting a line into his favorite fishing spot, or working on classic cars, he approached every pursuit with passion and a deep sense of joy. He also enjoyed having gatherings which included hosting his notorious barbeques for his family and friends. Charles had a love for animals, which reflected in the wide variety of creatures he called his pets over the years. From the snakes he so proudly cared for to his loyal pit bulls and even a fawn. Charles was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his six children, Darian Garrett of Missouri, Jasmine Garrett of Alaska, Laticia Garrett, Dylan Garrett, Deon Garrett, and Davon Garrett; seven siblings, Kevin Jackson, Carlita Flenoid, David O’Neal, Cheriquita Flenoid, Sofia O’Neal, Antonio O’Neal, Carlos O’ Neal, Elizabeth “Bebop” (Tristan) Douglas of Florida, and Chanah (Ryan) O’Neal-Johnson; and two grandchildren, Dekaylin Garrett and Legend Garrett. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and one great nephew. Chuck will be missed by many.

Elmer “Van” Wilkey, 78, of Hutchinson, Kansas. passed away February 13, 2025, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. 

He was born April 7, 1946, in Sterling, Kansas, the son of Steven James and Mildred Vogel Wilkey. 

Van married the love of his life, Mary Sue on January 22, 1966, in Cherokee, Kansas. They had two children, Stephanie and Scott. 

Van was called to serve in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1968 until 1969. Van enjoyed farming and ranching with his dad, he was involved with livestock most of his life in one way or another. 

He enjoyed racing cars, rodeos, roping and spending time going on road trips with Mary Sue and the numerous dogs over the years. Van also enjoyed watching the grandkids sporting events.

Burial will follow at the Sterling Community Cemetery, Sterling, with military honors. Memorials may be given to Missions Revival or Hospice of Reno County in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling.
