STAFFORD - Susan “Sue” Thole, 91, died Monday, October 18, 2021 at Leisure Homestead, Stafford.&nbsp; Born September 5, 1930 at Eureka she was the daughter of Wilbur and Sarah Cronk Soule.&nbsp; In 1949 she graduated from Emporia Kansas State Teacher’s College and taught 5th&nbsp;grade at Stafford Elementary from 1949-51.&nbsp; Sue was an active 4-H Leader teaching knitting and sewing and juding knitting and crochet at the State Fair.&nbsp; She taught tatting, sewing, crocheting and knitting nearly all of her life and for 20 years donated tatting to the Kansas Land Improvement Association Scholarship Auction. In 1966 she received the Public Relations award from the Cooperative Extension Service. Sue was in the Extension Homemaker Unit and was Happy Homemaker’s longest member.&nbsp; In 2014 she was awarded the KLICA’s Woman of the Year.&nbsp; She was an active member of the Stafford United Methodist Church and was a longtime Sunday School teacher.&nbsp; She helped with the church bazaar for many years making chicken and noodles, apple pies, apple butter, breads and cinnamon rolls. She was a 7th generation direct descendant of the pilgrim, George Soule who was an indentured servant that came over on the Mayflower in 1620 and signed the Mayflower compact.

On November 25, 1951 she married Harold Thole.&nbsp; He died February 17, 2013.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children: Murray (Mary) Thole, Gregory Thole and Paula (Robin) Figgs.&nbsp;

Carolyn had many passions including reading, gardening, antiquing, furniture refinishing and completing puzzles. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, including 3 grandsons. He was born on December 19, 1938, at Oakwood, OK, the son of Ivan and Mary (Higgenbottom) Reneau. On June 28, 1959 he married Betty Stewart in Carmen, OK. She survives. During high school, he joined the National Guard. He then joined the Navy and served from Oct. 1957 - Dec. 1961. He earned a masters degree and was a Teacher/Principal/Coach from 1967-1996. Most of those years were spent teaching &amp; coaching for USD 254. He loved to go camping, fishing, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Medicine Lodge and had served as deacon. Ronald Eugene Murphy, 73, passed away on October 19th, 2021 in Wichita, Kansas.

Ron was born in St. Charles, Missouri to Frederick Francis Murphy and Viola Josephine (Jones) Murphy. Raised between Millwood and Silex, Missouri, he graduated from Silex High School in 1966. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Missouri in Rolla for a year and a half, until he returned home to care for family.

After returning to Silex he worked for his brother, Bob Murphy, at the Silex Market, until he started working in animal pharmaceutical production. Ron worked his way up to production/plant manager and worked in the industry for nearly 25 years. Ron was a hard worker, a great manager and was well respected by colleagues and employees.

Ron enjoyed cheering for and listening to St. Louis Cardinal games, watching the Kansas City Chiefs, Mizzou basketball and football and just about anything sports related. He did NOT care for sports analysts. Ron loved meeting new people, though he rarely met a stranger. Ron loved his community, church, and blue pick-up truck which he loved to use for hauling items to the church garage sale.

Ron is preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Viola, brothers Fred, Bob, Dave, Gary, sister Mary Jo and granddaughter Natalie.

Ron is survived by wife Cindy Murphy (Wichita), son Casey Murphy (Lauren) of Ozark Mo, and daughter Meagan Montes-Murphy (Carlos Montes-Aviles) of Wichita, grandchildren Andrew (22), Laura (18), Charlie (3), Catalina (1), step granddaughter Lucy (13) and step grandson Noel (14), brothers Ed and Tim, sisters Patty, Judy and Janet and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a Memorial Service at Wathena United Methodist Church, in Wathena, Kansas on Friday, October 29th, 2021. The service begins at 11am, with lunch to follow. Family members will be staying Friday evening to catch up with friends and relatives traveling in for the memorial. For those interested, the family will be staying at Candlewood Suites in St. Joseph and gather at Ground Round Downtown in St. Joseph at 6pm.

Irma Ruth Beery Giles Howell passed away October 5, 2021 at McPherson Hospital in McPherson, Kansas just weeks before reaching age 97. She had been a resident of The Cedars in McPherson for more than 20 years and was a McPherson College Class of 1949 graduate.

She was born in Lintner, Illinois October 28, 1924 to Lester and Bertha (Cripe) Beery and graduated from Cerro Gordo (IL) High School in 1942. She married William (Bill) Giles in 1947 while they were attending McPherson College, then spent most of their working years in and around Peoria, Illinois, retiring fully in 2000 at The Cedars Independent Living in McPherson.

She was the last of her generation having been preceded in death by brother Everett and sisters Iva and Leona (Petcher). Also preceding her in death were husband Bill (2001), son Gary of Elbing KS (2010), and granddaughter Jessica Stevenson (2016) of McPherson. Surviving are Gary’s widow Sandy Giles (Brewer), Merle (Erika) Giles of Mahomet IL, Marianne Peeples of Phoenix AZ, and Marcia Stevenson of Montreal MO, along with 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Ruth survived her second husband Weldon Howell who passed in 2012. Surviving are step-children Veneta (Paul) Ediger of McPherson, Nolan (JoAnn Reed) Howell of McPherson, Norman (Mei-Feng) Howell of Fremont CA and Janice (Terry) Wokaty of Jacksonville AR, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Ruth taught public elementary school for 26 years, including 3 years in a one-room country school near Cerro-Gordo IL. She sang in the McPherson College choir as well as in church choirs well past age 90. She taught piano lessons for 15 years following retirement and ran a bed-and-breakfast for 15 years. She was active on the leadership board at her home Church of the Brethren in Peoria and was once the IL/WIS District Moderator.

She earned a graduate degree in music theory post-retirement from Bradley University. She was known to play piano regularly at The Cedars and most recently played from memory for her family just days before passing.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the McPherson Church of the Brethren, with Rev. Chris Whitacre officiating.

Internment of her cremains will be at the McPherson Cemetery.

Surviving are step-children Veneta (Paul) Ediger of McPherson, Nolan (JoAnn Reed) Howell of McPherson, Norman (Mei-Feng) Howell of Fremont CA and Janice (Terry) Wokaty of Jacksonville AR, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.Ruth taught public elementary school for 26 years, including 3 years in a one-room country school near Cerro-Gordo IL. She sang in the McPherson College choir as well as in church choirs well past age 90. She taught piano lessons for 15 years following retirement and ran a bed-and-breakfast for 15 years. She was active on the leadership board at her home Church of the Brethren in Peoria and was once the IL/WIS District Moderator.She earned a graduate degree in music theory post-retirement from Bradley University. She was known to play piano regularly at The Cedars and most recently played from memory for her family just days before passing.A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the McPherson Church of the Brethren, with Rev. Cleo R. Bartlett was born in September 1926 in Fulton County, Arkansas.&nbsp; He was the son of Andrew and Alma Shelton Bartlett and spent his childhood on a farm between St. John and Stafford.&nbsp; He attended Stafford schools, graduating with the class of 1943 at the age of 16.&nbsp; The summer after graduation he attended Sterling College, received an emergency WWII teaching certificate, and began his forty plus years of educating young people.&nbsp; In 1944 he was drafted into the U. S. Navy.

Following military service, he continued his education at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1949.&nbsp; He completed his Masters at the University of Wyoming. Cleo returned to Kansas and taught two years at Ellsworth before coming to St. John where he was to remain, serving as a teacher, high school counselor, and his last 26 years as St. John High School principal.&nbsp; He retired in 1988 having served 42 years in Kansas education.

Cleo married Darlene Ring at the St. John Methodist Church in 1951, and this became their church home for the remainder of their lives.&nbsp; Cleo served as a Sunday School teacher, on the Administrative Board, as Lay Leader, and as a member of the choir, Methodist Men, and the Prairie Crooners.&nbsp; He was a past president of the St. John Lions Club; Past Regional President of the Kansas Personnel and Guidance Association; and Past President of the Kansas High School Principals’ Association as well as a member of the Ida Long Goodman Library board, the St. John Beautification Committee and the Cornwell Scholarship Committee.&nbsp; He was an active member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge #539.&nbsp; Cleo’s avocation was his music, and he was known for his beautiful tenor voice. &nbsp;One of the joys of his retirement years was singing with the Mennonite Men’s Chorus and the Lindsborg Messiah.

Cleo is survived by his daughter, Suzanne McKaig (Patrick), Wichita and daughter-in-law Debby Bartlett, Overland Park; grandchildren Jessica Janzen (Eric), Dallas; Benjamin McKaig (Danielle), Pawtucket, RI; Preston Bartlett, Kansas City; Kyleigh Bartlett, Overland Park; Ryan Bartlett, and Cameron Bartlett, both of Jacksonville, FL; two great-grandchildren Parker Bartlett and Benjamin McKaig, Jr.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brother Vernon and wife Olive, St. John; and sisters-in-law Barbra Ring Atterbery, Tribune; and Mary Lou Padilla Ring, Gilbert, Arizona, as well as many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene, his son, Douglas, by his parents and his brothers, A.C. and Vonnie, and Steve Bartlett, nephew.

His life was devoted to helping young people develop their skills and abilities to their fullest potential, and joy came when he saw them succeed and become contributing adults. Mary Ann Dick, 85, of Hutchinson, died October 21, 2021. She was born in Hutchinson, the daughter of Wilbert and Marion Pruitt. Harold James Phillips, 96, of Hutchinson, died October 20, 2021, at Buhler Sunshine Home. He was born June 15, 1925, in Hutchinson to Benjamin and Jessie (Benson) Phillips.

Harold graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1943. He was a lifelong farmer. Harold was a fan of the Kansas City Royals and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church.

On January 12, 1952, Harold married Sally Lou Duby, in Nickerson. They shared 52 years together before she passed on February 26, 2004.

Rosalind’s life began on October 28, 1944, the daughter of Charles E. and Rosetta (Newell) Carter in Richmond, Missouri. She graduated from Potwin High Class of 1963 and married Harry Lee Swift on July 17, 1963 at the Potwin Christian Church.

Rosy and Harry managed Newell’s Truck Stop in Newton where she was also a hostess and a waitress. She was a member of Potwin Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed bingo, casinos crafts, baking, cooking shows on television, setting up for farmer’s markets with their friends, Lucy and Denny. They enjoyed having hunters in to play poker and their annual fishing trip to Texoma, Oklahoma. Her loving family includes her daughters, Tammy Swift (Michael Schommer) of Newton, Christa Mellinger (David) of Valley Center, four grandchildren, Stephanie Jo Swift (Jenny), Connor Schommer, Cody Mellinger and Ashton Mellinger (Alex Pinkerton); brothers, Charles Carter Jr. of Whitewater, Terry Carter (Margaret) of Newton; sisters-in-law, Connie Carter and Dora Carter both of Potwin, Dawn Carter of Augusta and Mary Carter of Camden, Missouri; her doggie boys, Bryck and Duke. Lothar’s life began on December 6, 1929, in Tampa, KS. He was the son of Gustav C. and Charlotte (Winter) Maaser. Lothar was a 1946 graduate of Tampa High School. 

He served his country in the United States Army for over 20 years in the infantry as a tank driver. Lothar loved to hunt, load black powder ammunition and collect guns. He was a life member of the NRA. He is survived by his sister Helen Benson of Lee Summit, MO; three nephews Eric Benson of St. Louis, Karl Benson of Portland, OR and Bruno Maaser of France. Lothar passed away on Wednesday October 20, 2021, at Hillsboro Community Hospital. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Otto, Bruno and Kurt. 

His family will gather with friends on Saturday October 23rd from 10-11 a.m. at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tampa where his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. led by Pastor Clark Davis. He will be laid to rest with military honors in the Lutheran Cemetery, Tampa.

Lothar A. Maaser |1929-2021|

Ronald Keith Anderson was born on January 8, 1936, in McPherson, the son of Leonard R. Anderson and Fern A. (Spencer) Anderson. Fern passed when Ron was ten years old. Leonard remarried Lena Marie Miller. Marie loved him like her own. He farmed in the summer for his uncle, Melvin Spencer, after his mother passed away. Farming made him strong with a strong grip that was part of his success later as a discus thrower. He loved farming. Ron served with the Army National Guard, Company A, 137th Infantry from 1954 through 1962 when he was honorably discharged. He was a teacher, coach, and counselor in the Lawrence, Kansas area from 1957 through 1975. He moved back to McPherson when his father-in-law asked him to come help set up an oil company for him. He taught two years at Central Christian School in Hutchinson in the midst of helping start up many businesses, including Cap Oil, The Christian Counseling Center, and Economy Hearing Aid Center. Ron graduated with the McPherson High Class of 1954. Until he was a freshman in high school, he had never thrown a discus. During those four years, he broke the school record nine times. He placed first in the league meets, first in regional meets, and first at KU Relay. He didn’t look like a discus thrower—he was 6 ft. 1 inch tall and entered high school at 140 pounds and weighed 157 pounds when he graduated. During high school, he also lettered in basketball and football. On September 20, 1956, Ron was united in marriage to Patricia Helen Casebeer in Enid, OK. He graduated with the McPherson College Class of 1958. Ron lettered in track and basketball. He was a three-time All American, four-time Discus NAIA Qualifier, KCAC Record holder, and two-year Conference champion. In 1957, he won the NAIA Discus National Championship. He was also an Olympic Trial Qualifier in the Discus. In 2000, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. He threw in Masters and Senior Olympic meets from 1992 to 2016. His last competition was when he was 80 years old. He competed in 205 meets, earned 175 gold metals, and held 80 meet records during that time. Their son, Rick, followed in his dad’s footsteps and took up throwing the discus and shot put also. He enjoyed many trips with Rick and his wife, Alice, when Rick became eligible to compete in the Masters and Senior Olympic meets. It gave Ron great joy when his son started beating his records! He loved God, his wife Pat of 65 years, his family, and teaching others about our Lord and Savior. He had a special love for teaching Prophecy. He loved to take his children and grandchildren fishing when he was younger. He enjoyed watching his son and grandchildren play sports. He had a silly sense of humor. He was called Papa and was greatly loved by all. In Ron’s last days, he was ministered to by Serenity Hospice Care. They loved him, and he loved them. They made his last days as pleasant as possible under the circumstances. He also had family members, you know who you are, who helped when Hospice couldn’t be there. Ron went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, surrounded by family at his home in McPherson. He was eighty-five. Ronald Keith Anderson was born on January 8, 1936, in McPherson, the son of Leonard R. Anderson and Fern A. (Spencer) Anderson. Fern passed when Ron was ten years old. Leonard remarried Lena Marie Miller. Marie loved him like her own. He farmed in the summer for his uncle, Melvin Spencer, after his mother passed away. Farming made him strong with a strong grip that was part of his success later as a discus thrower. He loved farming. Ron served with the Army National Guard, Company A, 137th Infantry from 1954 through 1962 when he was honorably discharged. He was a teacher, coach, and counselor in the Lawrence, Kansas area from 1957 through 1975. He moved back to McPherson when his father-in-law asked him to come help set up an oil company for him. He taught two years at Central Christian School in Hutchinson in the midst of helping start up many businesses, including Cap Oil, The Christian Counseling Center, and Economy Hearing Aid Center. Ron graduated with the McPherson High Class of 1954. Until he was a freshman in high school, he had never thrown a discus. During those four years, he broke the school record nine times. He placed first in the league meets, first in regional meets, and first at KU Relay. He didn’t look like a discus thrower—he was 6 ft. 1 inch tall and entered high school at 140 pounds and weighed 157 pounds when he graduated. During high school, he also lettered in basketball and football. On September 20, 1956, Ron was united in marriage to Patricia Helen Casebeer in Enid, OK. He graduated with the McPherson College Class of 1958. Ron lettered in track and basketball. He was a three-time All American, four-time Discus NAIA Qualifier, KCAC Record holder, and two-year Conference champion. In 1957, he won the NAIA Discus National Championship. He was also an Olympic Trial Qualifier in the Discus. In 2000, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. He threw in Masters and Senior Olympic meets from 1992 to 2016. His last competition was when he was 80 years old. He competed in 205 meets, earned 175 gold metals, and held 80 meet records during that time. Their son, Rick, followed in his dad’s footsteps and took up throwing the discus and shot put also. He enjoyed many trips with Rick and his wife, Alice, when Rick became eligible to compete in the Masters and Senior Olympic meets. It gave Ron great joy when his son started beating his records! He loved God, his wife Pat of 65 years, his family, and teaching others about our Lord and Savior. He had a special love for teaching Prophecy. He loved to take his children and grandchildren fishing when he was younger. He enjoyed watching his son and grandchildren play sports. He had a silly sense of humor. He was called Papa and was greatly loved by all. In Ron’s last days, he was ministered to by Serenity Hospice Care. They loved him, and he loved them. They made his last days as pleasant as possible under the circumstances. He also had family members, you know who you are, who helped when Hospice couldn’t be there. Ron went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, surrounded by family at his home in McPherson. He was eighty-five. Harold Lee Stoppel, 84, passed away October 20, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.&nbsp; He was born October 18, 1937, in Lucas, to Alexander and Bertha (Galliart) Stoppel.

Harold was a 1955 graduate of Russell High School, Russell.&nbsp; He served in the United States Air Force from 1957 to 1960.&nbsp; Harold was the owner of Stoppel Refrigeration, Heating and Cooling for over 40 years, and a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, Nickerson.

He had a strong work ethic and enjoyed hunting and fishing.&nbsp; Harold loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He would do anything for them, and he could always be counted on to be present in their lives.

On September 22, 1956, Harold married Betty Louise Boyles, in Russell.&nbsp; They shared over 65 years of marriage.

He is survived by:&nbsp; Betty Stoppel of Hutchinson; children, James Stoppel of Sterling, and Sue (Kevin) Webb of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Melvin (Janice) Stoppel of Russell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Elizabeth Smith Burns, age 101 of Hutchinson, Kansas, died October 20, 2021, at Mennonite Friendship Communities.&nbsp; &nbsp;Mary was born August 14, 1920, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of the late Henry E. and Minnie Smith. She was the fourth of eight children, and a lifelong resident of Hutchinson, Kansas.

She was a 1939 graduate of Hutchinson High School. Her father was the founder of Smith’s Market in Hutchinson. In the early years, Mary worked at Smith’s Market alongside her sisters Joye (Smith) Brinkmeyer, (Deceased), and Emadae (Smith) Wright, (Deceased).

Mary was the wife of the late LaVern Burns, whom she married on August 23, 1941.

As a homemaker, many of Mary’s passions revolved around her love of home and family. Her hobbies included a great love of decorating and refurbishing houses, tending her yard and flowers (especially her signature salmon-colored geraniums), cooking, entertaining, collecting antiques, and a love of fashion and jewelry. She was known for her love of family, friends and neighbors, and her great taste, style and flair. One of her greatest joys was cooking, baking, and entertaining, which she continued to do into her late 90’s.

Mary is survived by her sisters Ruby Jacques, South Hutchinson, Kansas, and Ruth Spivey, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and a multitude of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband LaVern A. Burns, her parents, and four sisters and one brother: Joye Brinkmeyer, Emadae Wright, Oma Decker, June Burns, and Virgil Smith.

Raymond Paul Diggs, 68, of Hutchinson, died October 19, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born July 5, 1953, in Hutchinson at Grace Hospital to Ellis Wayne and Iva Mae (Mooney) Diggs.

Raymond grew up in Hutchinson and lived in Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, and Georgia over the course of his life. He attended Winans Grade School, Sherman Junior High, and Hutchinson High School. Raymond also completed programs at Job Corps in Utah and Salina Area Technical College. He was a truck driver for many years and through this job he visited all 48 continental states. Raymond was a handy-man and fix TVs, appliances, and cars. He was a cowboy at heart and he loved singing and dancing, especially Christmas music. Raymond grew up attending Westside Baptist Church with his family and recently visited as well.

Les’s life began on February 23, 1935, the son of Harlan McClendon and Opal (Miller) Johnson in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was 13 years old when he accepted the Lord as his Savior in a small Baptist church in Los Alamos, New Mexico. He attended Los Alamos schools and graduated with a degree in English from New Mexico Western University in Silver City, New Mexico.

At age 17 he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served as a sergeant in the Korean War for four years from January 1952 to January 1956. He was awarded the badge of expert marksmanship. When he returned home, he married Teresa Ann Gonzales on August 18, 1956 in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Les loved outdoor activities including gardening, fishing, and hunting.

He taught English in several high schools and later became a jeweler in Richardson, Texas. Les and Teresa lived there for 32 years. When he retired, they moved to Newton, Kansas where they were members of Koerner Heights Church. He volunteered to teach Release Time Bible School and served at Source of Light, a correspondence prison ministry. He loved reading and memorizing Scripture. One of the legacies that he leaves is his twenty-plus Bibles that were full of highlighted and cross referenced, handwritten notes. He devoted his life to reading and studying God’s Word.

His loving family includes his wife of 65 years, Teresa of the home; children, Steve McClendon (Ursula) of Marble Falls, Texas, Byron McClendon (Cindy) of Carrollton, Texas, Elizabeth Claassen (Greg) of Whitewater, Kansas, David McClendon of Richardson, Texas; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harlan McClendon and his mother, Opal (McClendon) Johnson. Les passed away peacefully into his loving Savior’s arms on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at the age of 86 years old.

Leslie "Les" McClendon |1935-2021|

Bret’s life began on August 25, 1960, in Marion, KS. He was the son of Delvin L. O’Dell and Kathryn Ann (Park) Armstrong. 

Bret was a 1978 graduate of Marion High School. He was united in marriage to the former Randi L. Schoby on August 22, 2005, in La Junta, CO. Bret had owned Bret’s Butcher Block and the hardware store in Florence and most recently was a service technician for Propane Central in Wichita. He was active on the Peabody Fire Department serving for twenty years. Prior to moving to Peabody, he served on the Florence Fire and EMS from the age of eighteen. Bret was also an avid woodworker and enjoyed camping with friends. 

His greatest joy was his family which includes his wife Randi of Peabody; daughters Megan (Joel) Thomas and Alysha (Alex) Haines, both of Marion; step daughters Letitia (Jarrod) Fry of Hesston, and Toni (Taylor) Oxford of Rincon, GA; grandchildren Rylee Thomas, Clayton Thomas, Tessa Haines, Rhett Haines, Luke Haines, Dylan Fry, Dawson Fry, Jackson Fry, Nick Fry, Zoey Fry, Tristan Oxford, Ayrabella Oxford, Ensley Oxford, Zelie Oxford, and Ezra Oxford; his parents Delvin (Mary) O’Dell of Emporia and Kathryn Armstrong of Marion; and sisters Rhonda (Eldon) Hett of Marion and Brenda (Bill) Clouse of Smithville, MO. 

Bret passed away at his home on Monday, October 18, 2021. His family will gather with friends on Wednesday, October 27th from 6-8 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion. Bret’s life began on August 25, 1960, in Marion, KS. He was the son of Delvin L. O’Dell and Kathryn Ann (Park) Armstrong. Bret was a 1978 graduate of Marion High School. He was united in marriage to the former Randi L. Schoby on August 22, 2005, in La Junta, CO. Bret had owned Bret’s Butcher Block and the hardware store in Florence and most recently was a service technician for Propane Central in Wichita. He was active on the Peabody Fire Department serving for twenty years. Prior to moving to Peabody, he served on the Florence Fire and EMS from the age of eighteen. Bret was also an avid woodworker and enjoyed camping with friends. His greatest joy was his family which includes his wife Randi of Peabody; daughters Megan (Joel) Thomas and Alysha (Alex) Haines, both of Marion; step daughters Letitia (Jarrod) Fry of Hesston, and Toni (Taylor) Oxford of Rincon, GA; grandchildren Rylee Thomas, Clayton Thomas, Tessa Haines, Rhett Haines, Luke Haines, Dylan Fry, Dawson Fry, Jackson Fry, Nick Fry, Zoey Fry, Tristan Oxford, Ayrabella Oxford, Ensley Oxford, Zelie Oxford, and Ezra Oxford; his parents Delvin (Mary) O’Dell of Emporia and Kathryn Armstrong of Marion; and sisters Rhonda (Eldon) Hett of Marion and Brenda (Bill) Clouse of Smithville, MO. Bo’s life began on February 28, 1957, the son of Hiram and Dorothy (McLain) Young in Newton, Kansas. He graduated from Fredric Remington High Class of 1975 and then attended Butler Community College on a football scholarship. He married DeVesta Arlene Smith on August 21, 1977 at the Christian Church in Potwin, Kansas.

He was a contract welder and retired as a welding supervisor at ConFab in El Dorado. He loved his family and enjoyed barbequing, creating welding projects with benches and artwork, fishing, hunting, and working in his backyard. His loving family includes his wife of 44 years, DeVesta of the home; son and his wife, Ryan and Rachel Young of Jefferson City, Montana; daughter and her husband, Adriane and Grant Bowlin of Whitewater, Kansas; grandchildren, (nicknames from grandad in quotes) Matthew “Roscoe” Young and Lilli “Skeeter Bump” Young, Jude “Rufus” Bowlin, Julian “Spanky” Bowlin and Jentry “Fish Bait” Bowlin; brothers, Hiram (Mary) Young of Salina, Oklahoma, Charles Young of El Dorado, Kansas, Floyd (Tina) Young of Kansas City, Missouri; sisters, Evelyn Shultz of Potwin, Kansas, Elizabeth Pugh and Edna Place both of Wichita, Kansas; brother-in-law, Raymond (Nancy) Smith of Rose Hill, Kansas and many nieces and nephews. She was born on June 4, 1944 in Barber County to Frank Marvin and Nora Mildred (Roots) Winters. Nancy married Charles Ray Swonger on October 1, 1962 in Clayton, New Mexico. They were married for 59 years. Nancy graduated from Pratt High School in 1962. She was the owner of Ranchers Cafe in Sawyer. She also worked as a server and dishwasher at Skyline School. She enjoyed front porch sitting, watching wildlife, crocheting, cooking, baking pies and family gatherings. Diane Newlin, 83, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Stillwater Medical Center. She was born on April 4, 1938 in Pratt to Perry LeRoy and Virginia Louise (Leach) Fincham. Diane married Paul William Newlin on April 12, 1957 in Newkirk, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on October 13, 2009. Diane graduated from Liberal High School in 1956. She attended Colorado Women's College and Wichita State University before going to Oklahoma State University. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Stillwater. She was a school volunteer and would go in and read to the children and an advocate for Association for Children with learning Disabilities. She enjoyed reading, needlework, spending time with her family, trying new hobbies, cooking, animals and farming/ranching as a hobby and helping with Miss Kansas Pageant. Raleigh Eugene Lackey, 89, slipped peacefully into heavenly slumber, surrounded by family on Friday, October 15, 2021, trailing the setting sun in Valley Center.

Raleigh was born in Udall, to William Andrew Lackey and Viola May (Swindell) Lackey on October 18, 1931. His family left their rural farm community of Rainbow Bend and moved to Valley Center when Raleigh was age 13. He attended Valley Center schools where he participated in baseball, football, basketball, and graduated from VCHS in 1949. After graduation, Raleigh enlisted in the United States Air Force and reached the rank of Senior Master Sgt. He married the love of his life Bonnie (Fink) Lackey in Ponca City, Oklahoma in 1952. His bride sailed across the big pond aboard the Queen Elizabeth ship to join Raleigh where he was stationed in Laon, France. Raleigh and Bonnie started their family overseas, then Raleigh was assigned to air bases back in the states where he continued his military career as a meteorologist. The couple expanded to a family of six by 1958 when Raleigh was assigned to Schilling Air Force Base in Salina. Raleigh served in the Kansas Air National Guard and Bonnie took their four children on fun summer road trips in the family station wagon to visit Raleigh wherever he worked. Raleigh was a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Wichita for 37 years and a familiar voice on NOAA weather radio alerts before he retired. He coined silly weather terms like “snirt” to describe a mixture of snow and dirt. God and family was always first for Raleigh. He was a charter member of First Baptist Church (Grace Connections) in Valley Center and served as a deacon, Sunday School leader, choir member, church camp counselor, and was a Gideon who volunteered to distribute bibles. Raleigh’s love of sports was evident throughout his life. He worked the wind gauge at State Track Meets on the campus of Wichita State every year for decades. He helped organize the first little league in Valley Center and coached basketball, football, track, and baseball over the years for kids and grandkids. He and wife Bonnie bowled on a couple’s league for many years. Raleigh earned his bachelor’s degree in Business from Newman in 1978. He audited foreign language classes at WSU and spoke fluently in Spanish, German and French. He coached teams for grandchildren well into his 70’s and was a substitute teacher until age 83. Raleigh was a lifelong entertainer and performed at Wichita’s Cowtown Museum as a reenactor named “Lucky Luke the Drugstore Cowboy.” He played in a band known as the “Harmonica Hombres” with musician Madison West and teamed on albums with singer Dave Deutschendorf and fiddle player Jeff Pritchard. He wrote songs, played guitar and harmonica, and cut six albums to be enjoyed by his family and friends. Raleigh had a brush with Hollywood in 1989 when he was cast as the tv weatherman in a quirky movie, “Twister” filmed in Tornado Alley. The movie starred Harry Dean Stanton and Dylan McDermott. Always the king of corny “dad jokes” Raleigh enjoyed his own jokes as much as anyone and threw out a previously unheard riddle even as his end of life approached. He loved crossword puzzles and word scramble. Parkinson’s never dulled his sharp mind when it came to solving word games. He completed his final word scramble just two days before he passed. A CD of his favorite recordings lullabied “Silent Night” in German as he closed his eyes on his final earthly sunset, just three days shy of his 90th&nbsp;birthday.

Constance A. “Connie” Martin, 75, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 15, 2021, at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. She was a retired Pentecostal Pastor and Christian Counselor.

Connie was born on March 4, 1946, in Topeka, KS, the daughter of William O. and Lola V. (Kitterman) Brown. She graduated from Perry High School in Perry, KS. On September 16, 1965, Connie was united in marriage to Harris T. “Sonny” Martin. Sonny preceded her in death on November 2, 1992.

She attended The Father’s House in Hutchinson, KS.

Survivors include: two children, H. Todd Martin (Vicki) of McPherson, KS and Sonnie Martin of McPherson, KS; siblings, Coleen Ramos of Lincoln, NE, Loren Brown (Mary) of Spokane, WA, and Leon Brown (Sheila) of Deer Park, WA; ten grandchildren, Lindsay, Tyler, Rebecca, Cierra, Jase, Kayla, Tayler, Luke, Alexis, and Jaron; one great-grandson, Hudson; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, William and Lola Brown; husband, Sonny Martin; a sister, Barbara Brown; a brother, Pat Brown; and a son, Robert Martin.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 27, at Countryside Covenant Church. Burial will follow at McPherson Cemetery.

Constance A. “Connie” Martin, 75, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 15, 2021, at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. She was a retired Pentecostal Pastor and Christian Counselor.Connie was born on March 4, 1946, in Topeka, KS, the daughter of William O. and Lola V. (Kitterman) Brown. She graduated from Perry High School in Perry, KS. On September 16, 1965, Connie was united in marriage to Harris T. “Sonny” Martin. Sonny preceded her in death on November 2, 1992.She attended The Father’s House in Hutchinson, KS.Survivors include: two children, H. &nbsp;John L. Hall, 76, passed away Oct 18th, 2021 at Hospice House in Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;Born John Luther Hall on September 20, 1945 at Elkhart, Kansas. He was the son of James A.and Madge R. (Holcomb) Hall. He was the youngest of 12 children. On February 1, 1964 he married &nbsp;Ramona C. Ratcliffe at Sylvia.&nbsp;

He is survived by three children; Doug Hall, Lori Pike &amp; Jim (Patricia) Hall all of Plevna. Two brothers; Bud Hall of Guymon, Oklahoma &amp; Gene Hall of Hutchinson.&nbsp; Two sisters; Mary Andsager of Sun City, Az. &amp; Carol Hall of Wichita.

Seven grandchildren; Audra Hall, Brian Graham, Baylie Graham &amp; Madison Hall of Hutchinson, Ethan Hall, Gabrielle Pike of Plevna, Braden Hall of Leander, Tx.

Six great grandchildren; Anthony, Avyonna, Aalexia, Gunnar, Kyson &amp; Sage. He was preceded in death by his parents &amp; his wife, Ramona. Five brothers; Victor, Carl, Dick, Max &amp; Marvin, Two sisters; Claudia &amp; Phyllis.

He worked various places throughout his life but is best known for working on the farm&nbsp;and putting up hay.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 22 at Minnis&nbsp;Chapel, Stafford. Burial will follow at the Sylvia Cemetery. Visitation will be&nbsp;Thursday 1-6 p.m. with the family receiving friends 4-6 p.m. at Minnis Chapel, Stafford.
