Three day-weather outlook 

STAFFORD COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 1230p.m. Monday in Stafford County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Ford Ranger driven by David Wayne&nbsp;Peevyhouse, 63, St. John. was northbound on U.S. 281 just north of 5th Avenue.&nbsp; The driver made attempted to make left turn into a parking lot at 329 N U.S. 281. The pickup pulled into the path of a southbound 2007 Harley Davidson driven by William J&nbsp;Norris, 68, St. John.&nbsp; The motorcycle struck the pickup. After impact the motorcycle came to rest in the west ditch

EMS transported Norris to the hospital in Great Bend. Peevyhouse was properly restrained and was not injured. Norris was wearing a helmet and eye protection, according to the KHP.

Kansas man hospitalized after motorcycle, pickup crash

This is day 1 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest moved into southern Kansas about a week ago, but since then it has been slow going. With scattered showers and high humidity, most days the combines can’t get rolling until late-afternoon. There are reports that farmers have gotten into dry fields along the I-135 corridor, as far north as Mitchell County.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is only 3 percent complete, well behind 25 percent complete last year and behind 11 percent on average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 15, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated at 21 percent poor to very poor, 30 percent fair and 49 percent good to excellent.

Chris Stevens, General Manager of Farmers Coop Grain Association in Conway Springs, reports that harvest began last Monday, June 9, but it has been hit or miss. They’ve only taken in about 10% of the bushels they expect, but should be halfway complete by now. So far, it’s too early and too spotty to tell how test weights are going to average, but they’ve heard yield reports from 26 to 50 bushels per acre, which would be an average crop. He mentioned that some of the later maturing varieties had the advantage this year because of the rains. The area doesn’t have any disease pressure so far this year. Stevens is hoping that forecasted showers dodge them and it gets hot and dry for harvest this weekend.

However, the National Weather Service in Wichita is forecasting thunderstorms across the harvest area Tuesday afternoon. Winds up to 80 mph, hail up to tennis ball size and heavy rainfall are all possible.

Chris Fryer, Grain Merchandiser with CoMark Equity Alliance LLC in Cheney, says they’ve only taken in about 5% to date, even though harvest started last Tuesday, June 10. They would normally be about a third done by now, but rains have kept harvest from progressing. The quality has been very good so far, and yields are better than last year.

Kansas Wheat: 2025 Harvest day one

Born and raised on a farm in Northwest Kansas, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges the agricultural community faces. As a child, my parents had to fight to keep our farm, and I saw the mental and emotional toll these challenges placed on our family.

Years later, I took a job as a therapist in a rural community just miles from my parents’ farm. I saw the need for education on the effects of stress in agriculture, but I also saw the stigma associated with talking about mental health. Kansas was hit hard by drought, and the effect of the stressors could be seen on our farms and in our rural communities.&nbsp;I saw the community struggling and decided to give my first presentation on the effects of stress in agriculture. The stigma surrounding mental health was very strong 20 years ago and only three people ended up attending that first presentation. Stigma has always surrounded mental health; however, in agriculture, it’s almost ingrained in the profession.

“Rub some dirt on it,” “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” and “tough it out” are some well-known phrases in farming communities. While “toughing it out” might work on a minor physical injury, it isn’t the best way to recognize, understand and manage your stressors during times of uncertainty.

In the past 20 years, I have seen significant improvements in the stigma surrounding mental health. Instead of getting lost in the stigma and ignoring mental health needs, people are starting to recognize the symptoms of stress earlier and how that can affect mood and anxiety. This is critically important, because like any challenge, the quicker you are to respond to your mental health needs, the more likely you will be successful.

They also recognize and understand that much of their stress is from challenges they have little to no control over. Instead of blaming themselves for challenges outside of their control, hardworking farmers and ranchers are finding better ways and resources to manage their stress, anxiety, depression and overall mental health. The stigma is still there, but it doesn’t have the same grip that it used to, and this allows people to think about mental health differently.

It’s not just the agricultural community that is getting better; the people and resources supporting the community are changing as well. I have seen so many great people and organizations take on the stigma surrounding mental health in agriculture. The next generation of farmers are taking the time to talk about and prioritize mental health. Small communities and agricultural organizations are working tirelessly to spread information and resources to those who are struggling. Families that were once reluctant to discuss the effects of stress now come together to talk and support each other through challenging times. Rural communities are full of amazing people and resources working to overcome the mental health stigma and finding ways to support those in need.

While I worked as a therapist, I was always fond of saying that stress and mental health issues are not an excuse or a weakness like the stigma suggests. They are a challenge.

Improvements are still needed regarding mental health and the stigma surrounding mental health — I’ve seen firsthand the substantial steps that have already been taken to improve mental health in agriculture. My first crowd may have consisted of only three people, but since then, I have given similar speeches to thousands of farmers and ranchers in numerous towns across Kansas.

Amazing people are working tirelessly to break down this stigma every day, and there’s a way to honor their advocacy: Kansas Farm Bureau’s Rural Minds Matter Advocate of the Year Award. It was humbling to receive the inaugural award last year, and I am excited to see the program continue to celebrate the impact of mental health advocates in rural communities. Their dedication can be truly life changing. Insight: Advancing rural mental health 

Firework sales in Kansas are set to look a little different this year after the Kansas Legislature approved changes to state regulations during its most recent session.

The most notable adjustment affects seasonal firework vendors. Under the new rules, temporary tent sales are now permitted from June 20 through July 8. This expands the previous window and gives vendors additional days to operate within Hutchinson and other communities across the state. As a result, local residents can expect to see tent setups begin appearing around town in the coming days.

In a move aimed at increasing consumer access and supporting businesses, the legislature also authorized year-round firework sales from permanent buildings statewide. This marks a significant change from past policy, which limited sales largely to the summer holiday season.

Despite these changes, the usage dates for fireworks in Hutchinson remain the same. Residents may legally discharge fireworks only between June 30 and July 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. each day.

City officials remind residents to follow all safety guidelines and be respectful of neighbors during the permitted period of use.

Miss Molly was brought to Caring Hands after the unfortunate passing of her owner. She was well loved and cared for, her temporary foster shared this information about her:

"Miss Molly is a fun, loving, playful dog with beautiful blue eyes. She loves tennis balls, will usually give the ball back for another round of fetch, and is a fast runner. One of her favorite activities is flopping next to you (or on you) on the couch (or the bed– even better) for some snuggles. 

She is potty-trained and tolerates being in a crate (we crated her when we’d leave the house or if she needed a break), though the pitiful whining will persist if she thinks you’re a softie. Molly gets along with some dogs well, and other dogs not so much, so a meet-and-greet with potential furry siblings is a must. Gentle but firm commands and correction are more effective than harsh words, as she tends to freeze if she thinks she’s in trouble but will correct pretty easily otherwise. 

She has been very gentle and patient with kids ages 7-17 (no known experience with kids younger than 7). She will be a wonderful addition to the right family, sure to bring joy and laughter."

The National Milk Producers Federation and
other dairy groups are very happy.  That's because the Senate Ag
Committee voted in the “Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act.”&nbsp;

&nbsp;The
bill’s markup is a critical first step in passing the bipartisan
legislation, which has already been approved in the House ag
committee.

  National Milks President Gregg Doud said that passing the
Act will allow more schoolkids to access the essential nutrients they
need in their diets.  If it does get signed into law, give schools
with the option of serving whole and two-percent milk, because right
now, they can only offer one percent or completely fat-free milk.

Ag Minute: Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act

The Hutchinson City Council will meet Tuesday, June 17, at 5:30 p.m. to consider an agenda that includes a proposed $915,000 bond ordinance, a resolution targeting unsafe structures, and an investment in the Hutchinson Monarchs baseball team.

Bonds for traffic signal upgrades and street improvements&nbsp;

City officials are seeking approval for the issuance of General Obligation (GO) bonds to fund traffic signal upgrades and street improvements under the 2025 Arterial Street Maintenance program. The ordinance allocates $175,000 for traffic signals, $650,000 for street improvements, and $90,000 for bonding costs.

Finance Director Angela Richard said the measure is needed to comply with IRS regulations for recovering capital costs, including engineering and consulting fees, incurred before the bonds are issued. The bond would exclude airport-related work—such as a $112,908 parking lot resurfacing project—to prevent potential tax liability and instead fund that portion with general fund cash.

“This ordinance must be adopted before issuing any tax-exempt obligations,” Richard wrote in a memo to the council and City Manager Enrico Villegas. City staff are recommending approval.

Unsafe and dangerous Buildings&nbsp;

The council will also weigh a resolution to set a public hearing for several properties deemed unsafe and dangerous by Building Official Jason Lady. Inspections showed significant structural hazards such as sagging roofs, unstable foundations, and deteriorated flooring.

The resolution would establish a formal hearing for owners, lienholders, and other parties to contest potential condemnation or repair orders. City officials say the effort aims to improve neighborhood safety and encourage reinvestment.

Support for Hutchinson Monarchs&nbsp;

Another item up for discussion is a proposal to invest $4,500 in the Hutchinson Monarchs, a collegiate summer baseball team in the Jayhawk Collegiate League. City Manager Villegas submitted a memo outlining how the Monarchs contribute to civic pride, local economic activity, and Hutchinson’s regional identity.

With an average of 300 fans across 16 to 24 home games each season, annual spending could reach $120,000, generating an estimated $6,600 in city sales tax revenue. The team’s presence also drives activity in local businesses and supports city-owned park operations.

“While the direct tax revenue may be modest, the broader economic and social benefits are significant,” the memo states, recommending approval of the investment to support stadium maintenance, marketing, and utilities at Hobart-Detter Field.

Council members are expected to review all proposals and recommendations during Tuesday’s meeting at City Hall.

The city will begin the process of removing traffic signals at two downtown intersections starting June 16, according to Hutchinson Public Works Director Cecil Weible. 

Signals at Fourth Avenue and Washington Street, and at Avenue A and Washington Street are set for deactivation and eventual removal. The City has determined the lights are no longer warranted, and their removal will bring both safety and financial benefits. 

The removal process began in May with 30 days of advance notice signage, then the signals will be bagged for a 60–90-day trial period. This will allow the city to reverse the changes if problems arise during the trial period.  

In addressing the Hutchinson City Council on February 18, Weible said, “We have 74 active intersections year-round, with two more during the State Fair. Removing signals that are no longer needed will help reduce the chance of accidents by about 24 percent.” 

In addition to improved safety, the city expects to save approximately $2,900.05 annually by eliminating the lights—$1,384.92 in electrical costs and $1,515.13 in maintenance expenses.

Three-day weather outlook 

NOTE: Saturday June 14 is the 250th anniversary of the United States Army.. This is the second of two stories in honor of their anniversary.

 As the U.S. Army marks its 249th anniversary this weekend, Staff Sgt. Richard L. Hon, station commander at the Hutchinson Army Recruiting Station, is reflecting on nearly two decades of service—and encouraging others to consider the opportunities military life can offer.

Born in Indiana and raised in Illinois, Hon joined the Army in 2008 at age 21. At the time, he was looking for a new direction after college didn’t feel like the right fit. The Army offered a way out of Illinois, a path to eventually pursue education, and the chance to fulfill a long-standing interest in military service.

Now with 17 years under his belt, Hon is based in Hutchinson, where he’s been stationed since January. He leads recruiting efforts across a broad swath of central Kansas—from Great Bend to Medicine Lodge.

“It's a nice change of pace,” Hon said of the move to Kansas. “It’s slower than what I’m used to, but it’s been working out well for me and my family.”

Hon transitioned into recruiting in 2018 after being promoted to staff sergeant. Initially a three-year assignment, he chose to make it a full-time role due to the family-friendly schedule.

“The tempo of the job worked better for the family at the time,” he said. “So I decided to make the change, and have been doing this ever since.”

Recruiters like Hon help prospective soldiers explore a wide array of service options, from full-time active duty to part-time service in the Army Reserves. While he doesn’t handle National Guard enlistments—which are managed by state-specific recruiters—Hon said the Army offers more than 150 military occupational specialties, with job selections made before a recruit signs their contract.

“If you can think of a civilian job, the Army probably has a version of it,” Hon said. “And it’s guaranteed in your contract before you sign. You’ll know where you’re going for basic, what your advanced training will be, and often where your first duty station will be.”

For those looking to advance further, Officer Candidate School (OCS) is an option for individuals with—or approaching—a four-year degree. Those selected can commission as officers after completing basic training and OCS.

Hon himself has served most of his career in just a few locations—a rarity in the Army. He spent 10 years at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, before recruiting assignments in suburban Chicago, Indianapolis, and now Hutchinson.

The benefits of Army service remain a key draw, Hon said. For active-duty soldiers, that includes free housing, meals, medical and dental care, and up to 30 days of paid vacation annually. Both full- and part-time soldiers can receive education benefits through the post-9/11 GI Bill, which can also be transferred to dependents.

Family healthcare is another major advantage. “It’s about $31 a month for full medical and dental for dependents—with no co-pays if you’re in-network,” Hon said.

While walk-in traffic at the Hutchinson office may only average a few per month, Hon said many interested individuals connect through <a href="http://goarmy.com">goarmy.com</a>, where users can request information and get matched with a recruiter.

With three years left until retirement eligibility at 20 years, Hon said he hopes to continue for a total of 24 years in the Army. For now, he’s focused on helping others find their path.

“If someone’s unsure what they want to do, I really encourage them to come in and have a conversation,” Hon said.

NOTE: Saturday June 14 is the 250th anniversary of the United States Army.. This is the first of two stories in honor of their anniversary, the second story will be posted on Sunday.&nbsp;

 While most in Hutchinson know Dr. Dawn Johnson as the dedicated superintendent of USD 308, fewer may realize she also holds one of the highest military ranks in the U.S. Army Reserve: Brigadier General.&nbsp;

With the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army being celebrated this weekend in Washington, D.C., Johnson took time to reflect on her unique journey—a path that took her from a bowling alley in small-town Kansas to commanding a unit responsible for over 8,000 soldiers across ten southeastern states.&nbsp;

“It’s not the story you might expect,” Johnson said. “I wasn’t a model student. I was a troublemaker. One day, my dad picked me up from in-school suspension and we had lunch at the bowling alley he ran, and he slid a recruiting pamphlet over to me and asked if I’d ever considered the military. That’s where it started.”&nbsp;

One of the recruiters bowled on a Monday night. And every Monday, the recruiter kept talking to her. &nbsp;

The decision to enlist was partly practical. With four siblings and limited finances, the military offered a path to education and opportunity. Johnson graduated high school on a Sunday and left for basic training the following Tuesday.&nbsp;

What followed was a career that blended military service and education. After several years of active duty—including time stationed in Germany and at Fort Carson—Johnson returned to the U.S. and pursued a college degree on a bowling scholarship, first in Vincennes Indiana, then later at Wichita State. She eventually earned her degree from Wichita State and began teaching, all while continuing to serve in the Army Reserve.&nbsp;

Over 28 years, she has worked her way up through the ranks. &nbsp;

“I commissioned in 1997 and then in In two, 2001 of course, 911 happened, and then had three deployments since 911 right after that.” said Johnson. “Yeah, so I just moved up from lieutenant to captain to major, lieutenant colonel. &nbsp;And I think every time, you know, I just, I don't know that I ever had the desire to be a brigadier general or saw that in my future, I just walked into every job and gave it my heart and soul, and, you know, people recognize that, and they put you in positions to continue taking on more responsibility, and you continue to rise to the occasion.” &nbsp;

Now in her first year commanding a major Reserve unit based in Orlando, Florida, Johnson is one of only 18 new generals selected nationwide. Her unit spans ten states and includes 8,000 soldiers, with 200 full-time staff under her direction.&nbsp;

Her dual roles in education and the military, she said, complement each other in unexpected ways.&nbsp;

“Leadership is leadership. Whether it’s managing a school district or leading troops, it comes down to staying calm under pressure, making tough decisions, and mentoring others,” Johnson explained. “In both jobs, I try to live by the idea of coach, teach, mentor, and train. When people know what’s expected and feel supported, they rise to the occasion.”&nbsp;

With military recruitment numbers down nationally, Johnson sees herself as an example of the opportunities the armed forces can offer. She often meets with students considering service and has helped guide several young people into military careers.&nbsp;

“My, my young I raised a young man. He's not biologically mine, but I call him my son, and so he has finished his 20-year career as a Ranger Scout and was an outstanding soldier and Purple Heart metal. And same thing he was, you know, it, it really just changed his life and turned him around’” said Johnson.&nbsp;

She said her unit had their 250 Army celebration and she wasn’t able to be there, so she sent her Chief of Staff.&nbsp;

“Leadership matters, and presence really makes a difference. And where is my presence make a difference? And how do I balance that? By being present USD, 308, and then, you know, fulfilling and leading in that, in that Army Reserve position. And so, I have a lot of great people that I surround myself with and really try to let that talent go to work for me as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Looking ahead, Johnson says she hopes to continue her current command role and is waiting to hear whether she’ll be extended or assigned to a new position. While only a fraction of those who make brigadier general advance to the next rank, she’s focused on the job at hand.&nbsp;

Right now, she is just honored to lead, she has a great team, both in the Army and at USD 308. She tries to be present, support those around her, and lead with integrity.”&nbsp;

Dr. Johnson celebrates 28 years in service to country

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;After months of renovation work, Dillons Marketplace officially celebrated its grand reopening Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, unveiling a refreshed layout, expanded offerings, and a $3 million investment aimed at modernizing the store and enhancing the customer experience.

Located at 3200 Plaza E Drive, the 124,000-square-foot store underwent a $3 million remodel that includes significant layout changes, department expansions, upgraded technology, and a modernized customer experience, all part of Dillons’ broader investment strategy in Kansas. It was the store’s first full-scale renovation since opening in 2013.

Steve Dreher, president of the Dillons Division, welcomed guests gathered near the east entrance for the ceremony.

“It’s a big day for us,” Dreher said. “It’s hard to believe that almost 12 years ago, many of us were right here to open this store. We were excited then, and we’re excited today to be back celebrating again.”

Dreher noted that most stores are remodeled every seven to 10 years to maintain freshness and functionality. 

“We were able to stretch this store to 12 years thanks to the exceptional team that’s kept it thriving,” he said. “But customer needs evolve. Retail has changed, especially after the pandemic. This remodel allows us to adapt to those changes and continue serving Hutchinson with excellence.”

The revamped store features a variety of upgrades:

“This store is the very first in the Kroger family to use Falcon Board for our interior décor system, even before our headquarters in Cincinnati,” Dreher said. “It’s lightweight, renewable, and recyclable. It not only looks sharp, but it helps us further our sustainability goals.”

According to Dreher, 84% of construction materials were diverted from the landfill during the remodel process through recycling and repurposing. The store also received a refreshed exterior and updates to key infrastructure systems to support the customer and employee experience.

The reopening celebration included remarks from store manager Jason Cline, who expressed appreciation to the store team and the community.

“Our vision is to always be full, fresh and friendly for our guests, every single day,” Cline said. “These upgrades will help us deliver on that promise. I want to thank our incredible associates, our loyal customers, and our community partners for making this all possible. You are the heart of Dillons.”

In a show of continued community engagement, Sheila Regehr, a spokesperson for Dillons, presented three $1,000 donations to local nonprofits: the Hutchinson Salvation Army, the Food Bank of Reno County, and United Way of Reno County.

“Together with our community partners, we’re making a real impact in helping those who need it most,” Regehr said. “That’s what today is all about, celebrating progress while giving back.”

The reopening celebration also featured product samples throughout the store, grand re-opening promotions, free giveaways, and raffles for Dillons gift cards and product baskets. Festivities are expected to continue through the weekend.

Dillons has served Hutchinson since 1921 and operates under The Kroger Co., one of the largest grocery retailers in the country. The Hutchinson Marketplace store is one of the company’s flagship locations in Kansas.

According to Dreher, Dillons has invested more than $35 million in its Kansas stores over the past decade, with more renovations and a new store planned in Lawrence this year.

“We remodel not to inconvenience you, but to make your experience better,” Dreher told the crowd. “And we know change isn’t always easy. That’s why we’re so grateful for your loyalty and patience.”

Before concluding his remarks, Dreher revisited the original mission statement created by the department leadership team when the store first opened in 2013, one he said still guides the store today:

We believe and are committed to providing our customers a world-class shopping experience through low prices, fast, friendly checkouts, from genuinely engaged associates in every aisle, in every department, every day. We believe.

“Those words hold true today, maybe more than ever,” Dreher said. “This store stands as a testament to that mission, and to the people who bring it to life every single day.”

Dillons celebrates $3 million remodel with grand reopening in Hutchinson

McPHERSON, Kan. — A fire Friday morning caused significant damage to a McPherson home and displaced four residents and their two dogs.

McPherson Fire Department crews were dispatched at 10:30 a.m. to the 600 block of North Oak Street after a neighbor called 911 to report smoke coming from the residence. McPherson EMS and the McPherson Police Department also responded.

As crews made their way to the scene, dispatchers advised that one resident had safely exited the home. Firefighters were informed that two dogs were still inside.

Firefighters entered the home and located a working fire in the kitchen. Crews quickly extinguished the blaze and conducted a search of the main floor and basement. Both dogs were found unharmed — one in the basement and the other in a rear room — and were reunited with the residents.

The fire was contained to the kitchen, but heat, smoke and water caused damage throughout the structure. All four residents and their pets were displaced as a result.

Two fire engines and a command vehicle with six personnel responded to the initial alarm. After confirming a working structure fire, Ladder 1 and two additional command vehicles with four more personnel were dispatched on a second alarm.

An investigation determined the fire originated in the kitchen and was accidental in nature.

Fire damages McPherson home, displaces 4 residents and 2 dogs

MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — Two Hutchinson residents died following a two-vehicle crash Thursday night in Moundridge, according to the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 7:48 p.m. to the intersection of Old Highway 81 and Arrowhead Road, where a 2004 Toyota Corolla had collided with a pickup truck.

Authorities said the Toyota, driven by Danny Lee Heath, 63, of Hutchinson, had stopped at a stop sign and pulled into the path of a northbound pickup truck driven by Kaleb Bowen, 19, of Moundridge. The pickup struck the passenger side of the Toyota.

Mariah Lyddane, 30, of Hutchinson, a passenger in the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene by Moundridge Fire and EMS. Heath was extricated from the vehicle and transported to McPherson Medical Center, then transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where he died around 5 a.m. Friday.

Bowen was evaluated at a hospital and released.

Next of kin have been notified. No further information is available at this time.

Happenings Around Hutch | June 13-15

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs will trade in scorecards for support this Saturday, June 14, as they host one of the most meaningful nights of their baseball season, a night devoted to striking out cancer.

In a heartfelt tradition that began with the team’s founding, the Monarchs will again raise funds for the Cancer Council of Reno County, an organization that provides vital resources and support for local cancer patients and their families.

There will be no regular admission fee for Saturday's game. Instead, fans are encouraged to make a goodwill offering, with 100% of donations going directly to the Cancer Council. Additionally, the team’s players and coaches will wear custom jerseys in honor of those affected by cancer—jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game to further benefit the cause.

This year’s commemorative jersey holds special significance. It honors Dave Blackim, the late father of Monarchs co-owner and General Manager Marc Blackim.
