Kan. —The annual Alzheimer's Walk in Hutchinson is coming up in October.

"It's just going to look a little bit different," said Stephanie Hartung with the Alzheimer's Association. "Given the global pandemic that we are all living in right now, we are not gathering as a large group. We are still walking, in small teams and with friends and families in the community. This year, walk is everywhere."

There will be a specific place walkers should see on October 10.

"We've got some special things planned that day," Hartung said. "We've got an opening ceremony that will be held virtually and you can get there through our walk page, as well as a drive through promise garden."

The garden, which will be at Avenue A Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the 10th is designed to substitute for their traditional flower ceremony. Hartung understands there may not be as many walkers this year.

"We do see a little bit of a decline from last year, which is understandable," Hartung said. "However, we are right on track with still raising quite a few dollars and having a lot of participants in the Hutchinson community."

Walkers can download the Walk to End Alzheimer's mobile app to send fundraising messages and track their progress.

Farm Bureau VOTE FBF PAC makes endorsements

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson has learned that they have been turned down for a KDOT grant that would have been used for the Woodie Seat interchange with Avenue A.

City Manager Jeff Cantrell says the project was not on the list of KDOT funded projects which was recently released.&nbsp;

The project, which has been met with mixed reaction from the public and local business, would have removed two aging bridges on the Woodie Seat and constructed roundabouts at Avenue A and Adams and at the interchange with the freeway. The total cost was $8.7 million. Nearly $7 million would have been paid for by the state.

Cantrell says the city will now have to go back and find ways to keep the bridges intact. It’s the second time the city has been turned down for funding the project.

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council met to discuss the Wheatland Park complex during Tuesday's agenda session.&nbsp;

The baseball and softball facility is used by USD 313, Buhler Rec and the city for numerous events throughout the spring and summer. The three entities have had an agreement in place but it was supposed to be addressed each year which has not happened. With several new people in place in the school district, it was decided that all sides should meet again and look over the agreement. No action was taken.&nbsp;

The Council also discussed how they can use their limited COVID funds to add technology that will allow the city to stream meetings and do more from home if the pandemic moves them in that direction. Again, no action was taken.

Entities discuss Wheatland Park agreement, no action taken

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In August, the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce recognized new teachers across Reno County with gift bags made possible by chamber members.&nbsp;&nbsp;

With the success of the gesture, the Chamber has decided to take things a step further by showing appreciation for all educators and staff of schools in Reno County.

The Chamber is asking its business members to become a part of a special promotion this fall by offering specials to educators and staff across the county such as buy-one-get-one and other discounts. The offers will be distributed throughout the school districts.

If put in place, the promotion would benefit more than 1,700 education staff and teachers in Reno County.

Kan. —&nbsp;Republican candidate for the Big First District seat in Congress, Tracey Mann knows the role of that representative starts with agriculture.

"People ask me all the time, what committees would I like to serve on," Mann said. "The answer is three committees, the ag committee, the ag committee and the ag committee. There's nothing more important than serving on the House Ag Committee. I've recieved confirmation that is something I would get to do, which is really important."

The key to helping out agriculture is continuing to open the economy, in Mann's estimation.

"We've got to keep opening up," Mann said. "We've got to return to life as normal as we can. This disease is not going anywhere. Early on, we did not know what it was. We now know what it is, who it effects, how it effects them. Some people need to take precautions. Some people need to take extreme precaution, but by and large, we've got to get this economy reopened."

People eating a steak at a restaurant as opposed to at home really does impact all along the line.

"When that steak was sold for a premium in restaurants, that adds more value to that entire animal," Mann said. "That eventually gets pushed back on to the producers. When restaurants aren't open, the value proposition, unfortunately, decreases, which puts downward pressure on commodity and livestock prices, which makes it really hard for our producers, our fantastic farmers, ranchers, livestock producers."

Mann will face Democrat Kali Barnett in November.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners approved the purchase of two fire trucks for Rural Fire District #4 during Tuesday's meeting. Originally, the county approved the purchase of a truck, but the fire district was unable to find one to fit its needs.

The two identical trucks are in South Carolina and cost $95,000 each. Chief Kent Branscom says the benefit of having two similar trucks will be ease of training for the volunteers and standard operating procedures for the two pumpers.&nbsp;

The purchase is approved pending an inspection of the trucks and legal language needed for the purchase. The commission also approved the purchase of 40 air pack bottles at a cost of $25,000.

Also Tuesday, the board signed an agreement with SCS Engineers to do engineering work for the foundation and pad portion of the new landfill support facilities that will be built on the portion of Mohawk Road that will soon be vacated.&nbsp;

The board announced there will not be a meeting next week because two commissioners will be absent.

Commission approves fire truck purchases

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A trial date has been set for a Hutchinson man on a first-degree murder charge following a status conference Tuesday afternoon. The trial date for Isaac Ervin is now set for Dec. 9.

Isaac Ervin is accused of killing Lora Beth Stratton in August of 2019. Stratton was found unconscious in an alley on Aug. 24. She died at a Wichita hospital.

The defense has also filed a motion for dismissal of charges claiming self-defense. The motion states that Ervin took action against Stratton under the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law, where the use of force against another person was justified in self-defense. Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton says Ervin’s claim does not hold any legal ground. That hearing is set for November.

The co-defendant in the case, Delshay Vinsonhaler, has already entered guilty pleas to lesser charges and was sentenced to three years in prison.

Effective immediately, the intersection will be a 4-way stop. Stop signs have been installed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Public Works says an underground cable has failed and bids are currently out to get a contractor to do the repairs. No timetable was given for when the work would be finished, but it will be an extended period of time.

Motorists are urged to use caution, especially around school zone times.

New sign reminds Hutchinson residents to 'never forget' 9-11

Kan. —&nbsp;Salthawk Community Support is looking for more help as students at Hutchinson High School and HMS-8 deal with the economic fallout from COVID-19.

"When the COVID hit our community, it hit our social service agencies in town, all of them," said Nikkee Byard with Salthawk Community Support. "Not only did it deplete resources, but it depleted funding. The funding basically went to nothing."

This has left Salthawk Community Support filling some of those gaps for students.

"We've helped with a lot of basic needs," Byard said. "A lot of simple clothing, backpacks, things like that that families just didn't have the resources to get to this year. Not only that, but just the social emotional piece, the stress level in homes."

There is additional stress in every home these days.

"We're coming back into a very stressful environment," Byard said. "It's been hard on the kids and it's been hard on teaching staff."

Part of what Salthawk Community Support hopes to do is pair students up with mentors who can help keep them accountable and direct them to resources if schools are forced to go away from in person learning later in the year due to COVID-19. If you'd like to help, contact SCS at (620) 615-4356.

Salthawk Community Support looking for more resources as year continues

Kan. —&nbsp;Republican 102nd District House candidate John Whitesel has a singular focus to his campaign.

"The taxes and regulations in this state are really out of control," Whitsel said. "We are the number four highest taxed state in the nation. We're right behind New York and California. For individuals, this state is not a good place if you like low taxes and I'm hoping to change that."

Whitesel believes that government should shrink.

"Before you can cut taxes, you've got to reduce spending," Whitesel said. "I mean, there's no way around that. Yeah, you can grow your way to prosperity, but realistically you need to spend less money and if that's not at the core of it then no matter what you bring in, you're always going to spend it."

"I think you need to cut across the board," Whitesel said. "I really do. Then, if you make a cut across the board then you can put things back into the things that matter most. Where those things are would of course, be negotiated, but, you're never going to get specific cuts, because you're never going to get enough people to target any specific area to cut."

Whitesel is running against Democrat incumbent Jason Probst in November.

Whitesel: Across the board cuts needed in state government

Eagle Communications announced last week that longtime employee-owner Terry Drouhard has announced his retirement, effective Dec. 31.

Drouhard, who has been with Eagle since 1989, serves as the regional manager of Eagle's markets in Salina and Hutchinson.

"We congratulate Terry on his very successful years of service with Eagle and that he will be able to look forward to a well-deserved retirement spending time with his wife, Kathy," said Kurt David, Eagle chief executive officer.

Effective Oct. 1, Ben Waters, who has served as sales manager and digital leader in Hutchinson has been named general manager of Hutchinson, which operates radio stations Country 102.9, KWBW and My 93.1, as well as <a href="https://hutchpost.com/">Hutch Post</a>.

Drouhard and Waters will work together to transition both the Hutchinson and Salina markets to new leadership.

"I am very thankful to have started my career under the direction of Terry Drouhard," Waters said. "I am excited for the opportunity to continue to help and grow our teams both in the Salina and Hutchinson markets. The Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run is holding an event Saturday, October 3 to support First Call for Help.

Jim Gruver with the Rod Run says the event will be at the DCI Parking Lot from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. 

Donations of socks, gloves, hats, sweatshirts and hygiene items will be accepted.

There will be a Show and Shine Car Show from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Park and then a cruise from Carey Park to 30th and Main and then over to the KMart parking lot on 30th starting at 6 p.m.

The Reno County Health Department confirms a fourth local resident with laboratory confirmed COVID-19 died September 25, 2020, while hospitalized in Hutchinson.

Out of respect for the family, the Reno County Health Department will not release any further information about this individual.

Please continue to be vigilant by washing your hands, social distance by at least six feet or more, wear a mask when you are in public places and stay at home if you are not feeling well. 

It is very important that people continue to follow the guidelines to help decrease the spread of COVID-19.

Fourth death from COVID-19 confirmed in Reno County

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of South Hutchinson has released details about its new housing incentive program.&nbsp;

The council has been working on a new incentive program for new housing and approved moving forward with the program during its Sept. 8 meeting. The resolution for the incentive was then approved Sept. 21.

The new program will provide a $5,000 incentive to build a new single-family home under the following guidelines:

The minimum investment must be $100,000, the home must be in the city limits and in a taxed platted development. All zoning requirements must be met and a certificate of occupancy must be issued by the city. The home must also be connected to all city utilities to qualify.

The city has two incentive packages for neighborhood revitalization, but until now, has had no new home incentive to offer.

South Hutchinson new home incentive details released

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man awaiting trial on a first-degree murder charge will be back in a Reno County courtroom Tuesday for a status conference.&nbsp;

Issac Ervin is accused of killing Lora Beth Stratton in August of 2019. Stratton was found unconscious in an alley on Aug. 24. She died at a Wichita hospital.

The conference tomorrow will be to update how the case is moving along. At this time, both sides are waiting for a mental evaluation of the defendant.&nbsp;

The defense has also filed a motion for dismissal of charges claiming self-defense. The motion states that Ervin took action against Stratton under the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law, where the use of force against another person was justified in self-defense. Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton says Ervin’s claim does not hold any legal ground.&nbsp;

No word on what will come before Judge Tim Chambers on Tuesday and no new trial date has been set at this time.

BrightHouse of Hutchinson has been working for the duration of the pandemic to provide essential services to those experiencing domestic violence. For the month of October, BrightHouse will be sharing information daily on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/brighthouseks">Facebook page</a>&nbsp;to help raise awareness of domestic violence.&nbsp;

Statistics show one in four women and one in seven men experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

Some communities are more affected by abuse and experience more barriers to safety because of race, age, class, immigration status, language, physical ability, gender or sexual orientation.&nbsp;

BrightHouse has also sent letters and proclamations to area mayors inviting them to declare October Domestic Violence Awareness Month.&nbsp;

BrightHouse provides service to Harper, Kingman, Reno and Rice counties.

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— A Hutchinson man is facing potential charges of aggravated kidnapping and other counts related to a domestic disturbance Sunday morning.

Rey Sanchez is being held in the Reno County Correctional Facility on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping, sexual battery, two counts of domestic battery, aggravated burglary, and criminal damage to property. His bond is set at $120,750.

Sancehz was arrested after police responded to a domestic situation. According to the affidavit, Sanchez broke into the victim's house and attacked her in her bedroom. At one time she is said to have escaped out on to the front porch, but was grabbed and forced back into the home.&nbsp;

Sanchez is also alleged to have threatened two witnesses during the altercation before driving away from the scene.&nbsp;The investigation continues.&nbsp;

Hutchinson man faces possible kidnapping charges after arrest

Kan. —&nbsp;Medicare prescription drug coverage, otherwise known as Medicare Part D is an optional benefit offered to everyone who has Medicare. The open enrollment period is coming up between October 15 and December 7.

"We go on to medicare.gov," said SHICK counselor Denise Pina. "We request that they have a list of their prescriptions with the dosage and the quantity. Once we have that information put in, we ask for a pharmacy. Once we have the pharmacies put in to do a comparison, Medicare chooses what's best for the lowest premium and the lowest cost for the drug."

If your medications have changed, that's the time to look again at your plan. It's also possible there have been business changes that are worth a second look.

"Some of the insurance companies, they switch hands," Pina said. "Sometimes their premiums go up, sometimes their premiums go down, we suggest that people take a look at that."

You can submit the form to be looked at already, but you won't get a response until the window to change opens in mid-October. If you have any questions, call the Reno County Department of Aging at 620-694-2911.

Kan. — Kansas State Senate District 34 Democratic candidate Shanna Henry says Medicaid expansion is why she's running for the seat.

"This is the number one issue," Henry said. "We have spent way too much time stalling on this issue. We've been blockaded in our state legislature by former Governor Brownback's veto of Medicaid expansion. We have now lost to the tune of $4.3 billion of our Kansan taxpayer money since 2014 because we have not passed Medicaid expansion."

Henry sees it as an economic development issue.

"It's hard for our small businesses that aren't able to offer health insurance to their employees," Henry said. "It is very, very hard for so many people that I know personally that have no form of health insurance," Henry said. "This is drastically needed."

Henry is a Kingman County resident and she has seen what her hospital had to do to stay open.

"Our Kingman Community Hospital has lost over $450,000 in annual revenues if we'd have just had Medicaid expansion," Henry said. "We passed a three-quarter percent sales tax, just to keep the doors open of our rural hospital."

Henry is running against Dr. Mark Steffen in the November election to replace Republican Ed Berger. Berger also supported expanding Medicaid. Steffen is against it.
