RENO COUNTY— A Buhler man was injured in a rollover accident Thursday evening.

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, at 7:16 p.m. Thursday, deputies along with the Kansas Highway Patrol, Buhler Police, Hutch Fire, and Reno County EMS were dispatched to 85th and Summers Road northeast of Hutchinson for a rollover injury accident. 

 Deputies found a passenger vehicle in a field on the south side of 85th upside down.  The driver, a 38 year old male of Buhler had been ejected from the vehicle and was laying in the field.  The driver was later transported to a local hospital with major injuries.

Kan. —&nbsp;Dr. Rex Degner from Hutchinson Regional Healthcare system sounded a warning about healthcare capacity Thursday night as part of the COVID-Cut Off Town Hall online.

"In order to take care of the community, we can only handle so many COVID patients," Degner said. "As we get more COVID, we are getting to the point where, as of next week, we are going to be limiting certain elective procedures, so that we can free up nursing and other personnel to take care of the COVID patients. We really are reaching critical mass."

Originally, Degner thought they might be able to handle as many as 60 patients in the hospital with COVID. He's changed that opinion.

"We can't handle 60 COVID patients in this hospital," Degner said. "If we did, that would be all we would have in the hospital and everything else would have to be diverted to other communities."

He doesn't mean close communities, necessarily, either.

"That may not be just Wichita," Degner said. "That may be diversion to Kansas City, to Omaha, to somewhere else that could take them. That's for your routine care."

As of Thursday, there were 24 COVID patients at Hutchinson Regional and nine in ICU with five intubated. These are different than the county dashboard numbers because some Reno County residents go to hospitals outside the county and some residents from other counties come to Hutchinson for care.

The Correctional Facility cluster type has 534 active cases measured by the county's COVID-19 dashboard. The Long Term Care Facility cluster type has 6 active cases, but has been responsible for 6 deaths. There are 24 active clusters in the county.

There are 292 cases in the community at large.

Twenty-five people are in the hospital. One hundred twelve total have been hospitalized. Forty-nine have been admitted to the ICU and 15 have been intubated. These are Reno County resident numbers regardless of where they are hospitalized.

The community's positive test rate is up to 12.50%, with the overall positive test rate at 19.75%. 20.80% of the population has been tested.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police were called out the 3300 block of North Lakeview just before 7 p.m. Thursday evening after residents in the area reported multiple gunshots fired.

Police have located a number of shell casings in the street but it does not appear that any residents were targeted in the incident. Authorities have not found any structures involved and no injuries have been reported.&nbsp;

The area of North Lakeview was closed off while police combed the area.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to the latest update from Reno County Deputy Elections Officer Jenna Fager, the lead for Democrat incumbent Jason Probst in State House District 102 after counting of mail-in ballots that arrived Thursday is six votes.

Probst has 3,229, with Whitesel at 3,223. 

Mail-in ballots can still be received and counted through Friday, if they were postmarked by Tuesday.&nbsp;

Provisional ballots will also need to be considered by the county board of canvassers when they meet next week.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Health Department has given almost 2,000 flu vaccinations since the middle of September. 539 were administered at the Health Department. 1,355 were administered at schools, businesses and senior centers in smaller communities.&nbsp; If your company would like to have the department come to their business for vaccinations, contact the Reno County Health Department. You can schedule a flu shot appointment by calling 620-694-2900.

The Health Department will hold a special clinic for&nbsp;only&nbsp;flu vaccinations on Friday, November 13 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.&nbsp; Flu vaccine will be the only service that day so it should be quick to get in, get a vaccination and be on your way.

COVID-19 activity is surging in South-Central Kansas. Reno, Sedgwick, and Butler counties are all seeing a record number of cases and test positivity rates. Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and the Wichita hospitals are at critical capacity. All have been on diversion, which means they have to send patients to other facilities, at some point during the past few days.

We are caring for your friends, co-workers, and loved ones who are ill with this pandemic virus. Some of them are not doing well, despite the best available medical care and heroic efforts by the nurses and other professional medical staff.

All of us know the right thing to do to protect our friends, loved ones, and neighbors. Reducing the risk of spreading this dangerous virus is as easy as wearing masks, continuing to physically distance, and frequent hand cleansing. If you are ill, stay home and isolate. There are very few other viruses or illness being transmitted in our community right now. Show respect to our community by doing your part to decrease transmission.

It's really simple. Out of respect and concern for our friends and loved ones, practice these measures which have been proven to be effective. If we do, we will sooner be able to return to work and school safely. We can reduce the unnecessary tragedy of hospitalizing sick and dying members of our families, our co-workers and friends, and our community.

HRMC Infectious Disease Specialist issues statement on COVID-19

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair Board will meet next week.

The Board will hear from Interim General Manager Ed Berger regarding the fair's Post Audit and also discuss capital improvements. The fair is also working on legislation that would allow it to collect tax from any liquor sales on the fairgrounds.

The Board will also go into executive session for a personnel matter and approve a job description of what they want in the next General Manager.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Kansas State Fair Board is at 1 p.m. at the fairgrounds administration building. The meeting can be accessed on Zoom.

KANSAS CITY, MO.— Evergy, Inc. today announced third quarter 2020 earnings of $365 million, or $1.60 per share, compared with earnings of $367 million, or $1.56 per share, for the third quarter of 2019.

The company says third quarter earnings per share were driven higher by lower operations and maintenance&nbsp;expenses&nbsp;due to continued cost management, an increase in weather-normalized demand due to higher residential demand and fewer shares outstanding.&nbsp;

These benefits were partially offset by lower gross margin from unfavorable weather.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 announced Thursday that the 2020-21 school year will be a third over next week as the first trimester ends.

As a result, schedules will change. Pre-kindergarteners through middle school students will be on the modified hybrid schedule with Group A attending on Monday and Wednesday and Group B attending on Tuesday and Thursday.

There will be no classes for district students (pre-kindergarten through 12th&nbsp;grade) on Friday, Nov. 13.

HHS will be on a finals schedule next week that is altered by the modified hybrid schedule. HHS’ Group A will attend on Monday, but Tuesday through Thursday are finals.

Finals schedule released for USD 308

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The pandemic continued to eat away at the bottom line for Siemens Gamesa as the wind turbine giant released its 4Q and year end reports overnight Wednesday.

The company reported a net loss for the quarter of $133 million and a fiscal year loss of $1.08 billion.

Total revenue was back in the positive numbers for the quarter at $3.07 billion after taking a loss in the third quarter. Despite the challenges with the pandemic the company still has a large order book with a record order intake of $15.6 million year over year and a total order book of more than $35 billion for the future.

The FY20 results reflect the continuing slowdown in the Indian market and cost overruns on project execution in Northern Europe, all accentuated by the impact of Covid-19.

SG employs about 400 workers at the Hutchinson nacelle facility.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Another Reno County resident has died after testing positive for COVID-19.

This makes 19 deaths in Reno County since the pandemic began. No other information on the death is being released by the Reno County Health Department.

COVID death count at 19 in Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department still has openings for COVID testing Thursday evening.&nbsp;

The testing will run until 7:30 p.m. at the Journey Church north of Yoder.

Testing appointments still available for Thursday evening

HARVEY COUNTY —The Harvey County Health Department, in conjunction with Newton Public Schools, has confirmed a cluster of COVID-19 cases at Newton High School.

The cluster includes five positive active COVID-19 cases and they are students, according to a media release.

 The Health Department is investigating if there is any known connected source of exposure.

The individuals that are positive for COVID-19 are in home isolation. Those that are close contacts of the individuals have been notified and are in quarantine.

“We take this very seriously,” said USD 373 Superintendent Fred Van Ranken. “We work with the Health Department to conduct contact tracing, and will continue to implement plans to keep our students and staff safe.”

Newton High School has been and is currently in its hybrid learning model through Nov. 13.

USD 373 has taken several safety precautions in its buildings to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including a face mask requirement, additional and routine cleaning of high-touch areas, temperature checks, social distancing when possible and hybrid and remote learning.

“We have worked closely with the Newton High School leadership to quickly identify the close contacts of the positive cases to have those individuals quarantine,” said Harvey County Health Department Director Lynnette Redington. “The school district has been and continues to be in consistent communication with the Health Department as the district implements comprehensive strategies to promote safe learning environments for students and staff.”

The cluster will be considered active until there are 28 consecutive days – two incubation periods – without positive cases.

First District Congressman-elect Tracey Mann was surprised by the margin of his victory Tuesday night.

"I was optimistic we would win," Mann said. "I did not expect we would win by 40 points. I feel like the voters spoke in the Big First pretty loud and clear.

Mann knows where his priorities should lie in one of the more rural districts in the country.

"The number one priority is agriculture," Mann said. "People ask me what three committees I want to serve on and I say, the Ag committee, the Ag committee and the Ag committee.

Even though it appears Democrats will retain control of the chamber, Mann is still ready to get to work.

"You've still got to advocate and make it known what rural Kansas needs and what agriculture needs to be successful," Mann said. "In Congress, a lot of that happens at the committee level. That's why being on the house Ag committee is so important, to try to forge some bipartisan support for agriculture."

Mann: Agriculture is his Big First priority

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven City Council gave approval to a resolution approving new utility rates for the community during Monday’s meeting which includes a lower rate for Haven Steel.

Under the new agreement the industrial rate for Haven Steel is an all-in rate of $0.09 per kilowatt hour. Under that rate, Haven Steel agreed to donate $100,000 to the city to help offset the Evergy rate distribution increase that they will pass onto the city starting next year.&nbsp;

During Monday’s meeting members were provided with a copy of an October 26, 2020, email from James Ging, noting that further analysis of the rates based on 2020 usage show that the energy charge for Haven Steel should probably be slightly higher than what was presented at the last meeting in order to equate to the 9 cents all-in rate. Ging suggested $.042 for the energy charge but keeping the demand rate at $8.21 per kW.&nbsp;

The new rates go into effect January 1. The utility rates have been a topic of discussion ever since Evergy announced they were increasing their power distribution charge to the city by more than $7,000 per month.&nbsp;

From an infection protection perspective, hybrid learning is working in Buhler USD 313.

"We've been in hybrid now for four weeks," said Buhler Superintendent Cindy Couchman. "We're in hybrid when we're in orange and in red. We have some comparison. We had students test positive or staff test positive when we were not in hybrid and we've had them test positive when we've been in hybrid. The number of individuals needing to be quarantined in those two learning models is significant. When we're in hybrid, I think we've only quarantined three and four students depending on which level we've been at and most of those came from sitting at the same lunch table or a bus. So, we really feel like hybrid is working as far as limiting the exposure."

Students who are doing well in hybrid may not be the same ones who would do well in the regular classroom.

"I think kids who really thrive on more individual attention are doing much better," Couchman said. "They also have more voice in the classroom. Sometimes, in a larger setting in a classroom, it is hard to get your voice heard. It's no one's fault. It's just that the more people that are in the room, the more difficult it is to be heard or to be seen."

Staff is working incredibly hard to engage the students that are in school twice a week and every other Friday, whether it is their day to be in the building or not.

"Right now, with a smaller class size, the students get to be a little bit more proactive about asking questions and making sure that there's time for individual attention in the classroom," Couchman said. "I think those kids really, really have embraced the hybrid model."

Given that the gating criteria would have to drop all the way from the red through the orange down to the yellow to go back to another method, it is likely that hybrid learning will continue for a few more weeks.

Kan. — U.S. Senator-elect Roger Marshall is pleased that there was a clear decision from the voters Tuesday night in Kansas.

"It looks like we had a nice margin of victory by twelve or thirteen percent," Marshall said. "It gives us, I guess, some satisfaction that this is not one of those votes where people are saying, oh, what if. Kansans clearly made a choice. They made a choice for smaller government, for individual liberties rather than bigger government."

Marshall is confident Kansas will continue to have a voice on the Senate Agriculture Committee.

"I need to sit down with Senator Moran and respect his being the senior Senator and make sure what committees he wants to be on," Marshall said. "I sure believe I'll be on the ag committee, with Senator Moran on the ag appropriations committee, that gives Kansas a great one-two punch."

Marshall's priorities haven't changed since the final days of the campaign.

"If we get the economy right, then we have monies to do other things," Marshall said. "Whether you think that the priorities are infrastructure, high speed internet, military, good schools, whatever you think your priority is, it all starts with a strong economy. Of course, we've got to get Kansans healthy. We've got this COVID virus to deal with. I'm just anxious for this next month. The FDA is looking at one of the vaccines just for final, final confirmation that it's good to go."
