HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Amtrak’s Southwest Chief was left in Chicago for a second time as relentless snow battered that city, closing down rail lines. The Chief was also canceled on Saturday due to weather and was originally to resume service on Monday.
The Chicago area was hit with about 17 inches of snow. Amtrak Spokesperson Marc Magliari says they hope to be running again when the Chief makes its next scheduled trip on Thursday.
The passenger carrier has come under fire in the past for sending trains out into heavy winter conditions, occasionally leaving passengers and trains stranded.
If the train does leave Chicago on Thursday, it will arrive in Hutchinson around 3:20 Friday morning if all stays on schedule.
