HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Fire crews from around the area battled a wildfire north of Hutchinson Sunday afternoon and evening. The fire started around 3:30 p.m. and burned about 85 acres of open land.

“Some people were burning a brush pile and the wind pushed some embers out into some tall grass and made a little run to the northeast,” Rural Fire District 2 Chief Bobby White said. “District 2 territory is on the west side of Plum and Hutch Fire is on the east side, so we did a joint operation.”

White says they had plenty of help from area departments.

“We ended up with multiple fire departments from McPherson County, Reno County, Harvey County,” White said. “We had about 10 or 12 fire departments here.”

There were no injuries and no damage. White also said that there were no evacuations. Crews are staying on the scene to keep any hot spots under control. Red flag warnings are in effect for Monday with wind gusts expected to be above 50 MPH. Plum was closed throughout the afternoon and evening in the area of the fire.
