Cheney, Kingman students artwork will be in 2021 Keep It Clean Kansas calendar

Stop the Spread Kansas is a public awareness campaign urging Kansans to do their part in slowing the rate of COVID-19 infections across the state. Stakeholders are encouraging Kansans to follow the Centers for Disease Control guidelines, avoid mass gatherings, use face coverings and other measures to preserve precious health care resources.

Campaign partners include the Kansas Hospital Association, Kansas Chamber, Kansas Farm Bureau and the Kansas Medical Society. Additional organizations are likely to join the statewide effort that will begin before Thanksgiving.

“Hospitals across the state are facing significant capacity and staffing constraints because of increased COVID-19 spread, and this campaign will help ensure the normal standards of care Kansans expect will be preserved,” said KHA President and CEO Chad Austin. “All mitigation efforts taken over these next several weeks will be critical to keeping Kansas businesses, schools and other services safely open.”

Kansans can access campaign resources, industry-specific toolkits and guidance from the CDC and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment at www.StoptheSpreadKansas.org. The landing page will provide numerous communications resources over the next few weeks to help Kansans spread the word, not the virus.

“The Kansas business community is committed to the health and safety of employees and customers. Companies small and large across the state have requirements and protocols in place regarding facemasks and other measures that allow for social distancing and additional cleaning. However, we need all Kansans taking these voluntary actions. It will make a tremendous difference and reduce the pressure on our health care system. We encourage all Kansans to do their part to stop the spread of this virus,” said Alan Cobb, president and CEO of the Kansas Chamber.

Stop the Spread Kansas hopes to ignite a sense of unity, community and responsibility. The campaign will employ grassroots outreach and advertising to encourage all Kansans 18 and older to make the changes necessary to save lives. The most important aspect is educating citizens on the four tools they can use to stop the spread of COVID-19:

We must act quickly to alleviate strain on our hospital systems so our schools, businesses and communities can continue safely operating. I encourage all Kansans to avoid large gatherings and practice social distancing. By using these measures, especially during the holiday season, Kansans can show they are taking responsibility for protecting their communities. These small sacrifices will ensure our health care system and hospitals have the staff and resources necessary to provide live-saving care when needed. Slowing the spread also allows our schools, businesses and communities to safely remain open.

Kansas Organizations Launch Effort to Stop the Spread of COVID-19 in Kansas

Making a museum digitally active is a challenge, but its one they are rising to.

"It's a different set of skills," Reed said. "I have to do my job and then I have to translate it into the digital world, which is sometimes a little bit more difficult. You have to adapt what you're trying to teach people. In the end, you're conveying the same message which is the history of Reno County."

The profiles planned will be four to five minute Youtube videos that will allow to spend just a little time and learn a lot about Reno County history.

Reno County Museum using the internet to continue teaching

Like many this year, instead of traveling to be with family, I will cook my own Thanksgiving dinner. Honestly, I don’t mind. It is sad not to see my family, but I am relieved that I will not be putting any of them in harm’s way. And I am not mad about getting to keep all the leftovers for myself.

Holiday rituals and decorations have always paled in my mind to the comfort brought by food. A big part of my comfort comes from the promise of making this meal.

I have spent years in the kitchen as sous chef to my mom. She has taught me the simplest way to care for all people is to make sure they are well fed. When mom is in the kitchen, she is creating a physical representation of her love and care for others. She doesn’t let screaming grandkids, a crowded house or trying to make things look pretty worry her. Cooking the same meal that my mom will prepare grounds me and makes me feel closer to her and the love she shares freely.

When I was a kid my dad, like his holiday hero Clark Griswold, was adamant that we find the perfect Christmas tree to chop down. The whole family had to bundle up in our winter clothes and head out into the woods behind my grandpa’s house. We trudged through the snow for what felt like hours, examining tree after tree to find the perfect one. He was never worried about how long it took and even seemed to get an evil glint of joy in his eye when we always came back to the very first tree we had considered.

After chopping it down, we would then have to pick a second best tree to get for grandma’s house. We dragged both trees to the car with a renewed level of enthusiasm at the prospect of getting somewhere warm so we could regain feeling in our toes. Years later, I understand it was never about the perfect tree, rather it was about the shared experience.

My grandmother, who has now passed, was one of those beautiful scatterbrain types. Every year at Thanksgiving, she would forget at least one batch of rolls in the oven and let out a yelp as the smell of smoke would waft into the dining room. For Christmas, she would often make one of us grandkids feel like we won the lottery by giving us a Christmas present in July that she had hidden and forgotten.

That “second best” Christmas tree we brought her always ended up looking like an elf had thrown-up on it as she tried to “fix it” with tinsel. In all of these moments, I remember how she would throw her head back and let out a cackle of laughter at her mistakes. She never worried about the mishaps and imperfections; she embraced them and often shared the story in a tone of conspiratorial confidence. Grandma’s ability to laugh at herself taught me to love my own imperfections.

Even though I won’t be with my family this year, they will be with me. I feel them in the joy of holiday memories and the lessons that have made me full of love and thanks.

As the holiday season arrives this year, I wish you all moments of joy from imperfection, the ability to share unconventional experiences with your loved ones and fulfillment in the things that feel like home.

The chair of the Board of Reno County Commissioners is encouraging citizens to support their healthcare workers first by wearing a mask and socially distancing and following proper respiratory etiquette.

"We can argue about whether masks are 40% effective or 50% effective or what percentage effective, but its just common sense to think that if people are using masks and then social distancing and staying in smaller groups, that we're going to have less spread of the virus," Sellers said. "That's the important thing, is to cut down on spread."

Sellers is asking the community to hear the cries of the healthcare workers to give them a hand by keeping up the mitigating measures.

"We should be listening to the people that are trying to keep us safe," Sellers said. "They know the medications to use. We've had other medications brought up to the public and so forth, but I think about that the doctors know best for us. I have total confidence in the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and their executive staff and their organization for this crisis."

It's time to continue to encourage them, as well, as long as you can do so safely.

"If you have a friend in the medical service in Reno County, send them a thank you note," Sellers said. "Make them a family dinner. This is the time for the best of our community to come out. We need to see the community taking care of our dedicated medical providers. Friday, staff at the hospital was telling me that they had at least 57 people out and 23 under observation. Obviously, they are short of staff, just as every other business is. The better job that we can do staying apart from each other to cut down on the number of cases helps the hospital and helps our medical care be better."

Hutchinson Regional has around 900 employees.

Sellers: Support healthcare workers, wear your mask

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County overall case count is at 1027 as of Sunday evening. The death count among Reno County residents is at 43.

The Correctional Facility cluster type has 231 active cases measured by the county's COVID-19 dashboard. The Long Term Care Facility cluster type has 45 active cases, but has been responsible for 13 deaths. There are 44 active clusters in the county.

There are 814 cases in the community at large.

Thirty-seven people are in the hospital. One hundred seventy-five total have been hospitalized. Sixty-five have been admitted to the ICU and 21 have been intubated. These are Reno County resident numbers regardless of where they are hospitalized.

The community's positive test rate is holding at 18.57%, with the overall positive test rate at 25.85%. 25.09% of the population has been tested.

Monday night's study session of the USD 308 Board of Education will have a relatively light agenda.

On the agenda for Monday is the regular monthly expenditure review with Superintendent Mike Folks, a look at the audit report from Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk and Loyd and a brief look at how the gating criteria is working at this point, though no specifics are noted in the board documents. 

Also. action is expected on the research agreement with EAB. The agreement has been in force for a year now. Minutes of the board's last meeting will be approved and gifts to schools will be accepted.

In addition, the board will go over the handbook for classified employees for the year, approve a plan for an official K-12 and adult virtual school plan for the 2021-2022 school year. The board will continue to review operational expectations in fiscal planning and superintendent succession, go over grant applications within the district, expend some cares funding for Reno County Head Start for Clear Touch Interactive Panels and receive the monthly treasurer's report.

Following that, the board will go into executive session to discuss non-elected personnel and then approve the personnel report. 

The board will then recess to the curriculum lab for a study session where they will look at Advisory Committee, Facility Study and OE Reviews.

The study session will begin at 6:00 p.m. Monday at the Career and Technical Education Academy at 800 15th Circle in Hutchinson.

RENO COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 3 p.m. Sunday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Yamaha motorcycle driven by 48-year-old Daniel S. Darrow of Wichita was eastbound on K96 just east of Halstead Road when rear tire deflated. 

The driver lost control of the motorcycle and it slid off the roadway into the median.

EMS transported Darrow and a passenger 50-year-0ld Kelly J. Darrow, of Wichita to Wesley Medical Center. They were both wearing helmets, according to the KHP.

Kansas man, woman hospitalized after motorcycle accident

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners will seek approval to do an employee compensation and salary study.

The matter is part of the consent agenda for Tuesday’s meeting. The last such study was conducted in 2015. No further salary schedule adjustments have been made in the last five years to allow for cost of living or market increases, according to Human Resources Director Renee Harris.

Details of the proposal were discussed during a recent work session on Nov. 4. Approval would allow the Human Resources Department to put out a request for proposals to conduct the study.

Also Tuesday, the commission will take action on the new floodplain regulations for the Cow Creek Watershed and a portion of the Arkansas River Watershed. The changes are needed after the city received FEMA accreditation on the entire city-owned levee system.

The commission will hear from Sedgwick County Commission Chair Pete Meitzner regarding the current state of the pandemic in both counties.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Reno County Commission begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Courthouse.

More than 100 families in Reno County have been recognized throughout the years for their contributions to Reno County agriculture.&nbsp;

The Agri Business of the Year award went to Kincaid Manufacturing of Haven. Kincaid is a 53-year-old seed research equipment manufacturing company. It was started in 1967 in Haven and remains there today.&nbsp;

Delmar Kincaid was the company’s founder, innovator and owner/president from 1967 to 2018. In January of 2019, Mr. Kincaid’s daughter and son-in-law, Kimberley Kincaid-Warner &amp; Todd Warner, acquired the company and are the current president &amp; vice president, respectively.

Kan. —&nbsp;According to data from AAA Kansas, not many people are venturing out for Thanksgiving.

"A large majority, 86% of them, in fact, will not be traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday this year," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "Of those not traveling, 47% told us that they are staying home because of COVID-19 concerns."

The AAA survey of 742 Kansas residents was conducted Nov. 12 and 13 by Public Policy Polling. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 3.6%.

88 percent of Kansas residents surveyed said they perceived traveling at this time being some level of risk," Steward said. "37 percent of those said that risk is significant."

Before the newest surge in COVID cases nationwide, AAA would have expected up to 50 million Americans to travel for Thanksgiving.

Kan. —&nbsp;Phil Kerpen with American Commitment is concerned that federal price controls on medicines that could come soon, particularly if Congress ends up under full Democratic control, might save money in the short run, but would not save the most lives in the long run.

"The new treatment that doesn't get developed, that doesn't appear, that's a lot harder for people to see," Kerpen said. "I think that makes it a particularly insidious form of price control because you don't even know what you're missing out on. You don't even know what you're losing as a consequence, which makes it hard if we start going down that path."

There are ways to make drugs cheaper without stifling innovation.

"I do think there are a lot of things we can do to lower prices without having this negative long-term consequence," Kerpen said. "There is dysfunction in the market right now where the middlemen, the pharmacy benefit managers are able to divert rebates to their pocket, to profits, while charging seniors at the point of sale a copay based on the list price. They have an exemption from the federal anti kickback statute that allows them to do that."

Kerpen's concern is that the new crop of lawmakers and the potential new executive branch won't play as much hardball in trade as the current administration and so will undo some of the work that's been done in that regard, but what has been done with the COVID-19 vaccine candidates at least appears to be a good move in general.

"We should move towards being much more urgent on all of the new drugs that are developed, because, for the people who need that drug, or that treatment, or that cure, it's just as urgent a situation as this. They need it and it will make a huge difference in their lives. The idea that it's somehow okay for the normal process at FDA to take years and years, I think is wrong."

Kerpen acknowledged that the Senate races in Georgia and who controls the chamber after that could mean a lot toward what sort of questions a new FDA head might be asked under a new administration, as well.

Kerpen: Drug prices still need watching after election

RENO COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Saturday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Pontiac G6 driven by&nbsp;Payne, Jonathan R. Payne, 36, Hutchinson, was westbound at a high rate of speed on U.S. 50 at Main Street in South Hutchinson.&nbsp;

The car rear-ended a 2003 Ford F150 driven by&nbsp; Lee J. Smith, 42, Hutchinson, who was exiting U.S. 50 at Main Street. After impact, the pickup rotated clockwise, traveled off the road and struck a sign post.

EMS transported Payne to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Smith was not injured. Payne was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The Correctional Facility cluster type has 233 active cases measured by the county's COVID-19 dashboard. The Long Term Care Facility cluster type has 41 active cases, but has been responsible for 12 deaths. There are 43 active clusters in the county.

There are 694 cases in the community at large.

Thirty-five people are in the hospital. One hundred seventy total have been hospitalized. Sixty-four have been admitted to the ICU and 21 have been intubated. These are Reno County resident numbers regardless of where they are hospitalized.

The community's positive test rate is holding at 18.57%, with the overall positive test rate at 25.42%. 24.51% of the population has been tested.

With the change the Hutchinson Police Department will continue to respond to all crimes in progress.&nbsp; All other calls for service will be handled over the telephone.&nbsp;

HPD will continue to respond to injury accidents or alcohol related accidents, however, if you are involved in a non-injury accident where the vehicles are operable and there is no alcohol or drug use suspected, you're asked to move your vehicles to a safe area and exchange information required by your insurance carrier.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The council will hear a report from Hutch Rec on the operation of the city pool for the summer and get an update on SPARK funding that could be used by the city.&nbsp;

The council will also take action on a walking trail at Wheatland Park and discuss new wage rates for full-time city staff.

Out of respect for the families, the Reno County Health Department will not release any further information about these individuals.&nbsp;

Just before 8:30 a.m. Friday, emergency crews were called to the Tyson Prepared Foods facility on South Main in Hutchinson. 

According to the Hutchinson Fire Department a group of contractors were working on the refrigeration system when ammonia was released.&nbsp;

Two people were hurt, one was transported with what appeared to be critical injuries according to Reno County 911.

Tyson officials did not comment at the scene Friday, but the company did send a statement. The statement is in italics below.

We’re investigating an ammonia leak that happened Friday morning at our Hutchinson, Kansas facility. The facility was evacuated, and two team members were taken to the hospital for treatment.&nbsp;We’re grateful for the local emergency response teams who assisted the facility to care for team members and address the situation.

The 2020 Holiday Open House has been cancelled, but you can still buy art through the auction.

HUTCHISNON, Kan. The unemployment rate in Reno County fell
by just a fraction in October.

According to the latest from the Kansas Department of Labor
the jobless rate in Reno County fell from 4.6% to 4.2%. There were 1,455
residents out of work, all of them in the Hutchinson area. The city’s
unemployment rate also fell by one half of one percent to 4.7%.

During the start of the pandemic there were nearly 2,500
county residents unemployed.

The jobless rate for the state stood at 5.3% which is down
from 5.9% the previous month. There are still more than 83,000 Kansans
unemployed.

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven USD 312 School Board is making changes to its gating program because of the increase in COVID-19 cases in the area.&nbsp;

Starting Monday the 23rd, the middle and high schools will be in full remote learning. The two buildings had been learning in a hybrid format for the past several weeks. An announcement on meal pickup will be coming soon.

There will also be a change at Haven Grade School with no school on the 24th. Starting after the Thanksgiving holiday, that school will divide up the students with 6th grade going to Haven Baptist Church and the rest staying at the elementary school.

Yoder Charter School is already dividing up classes with a portion going to the Journey Church north of Yoder.

The changes were approved during a special meeting held Thursday afternoon.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Strataca Underground Salt Museum is presenting a special Christmas display.&nbsp;This inaugural display, Shine Underground, an illumination of lights, will be available to museum guests from Nov. 27 to Dec. 31 at Strataca Underground Salt Museum.Strataca says its goal is to provide a safe and special Christmas experience through a unique opportunity for the community to enjoy.&nbsp;Shine Underground will capture the spirit of Christmas and all that makes it the most wonderful time of the year with lights, decorations, and holiday music all 650 feet underground.As always, reservations are needed.
