HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A fire in a home near the Hutchinson Sports Arena Friday morning was quickly contained.

Fire crews were called just after 7:45 a.m. to 929 East 12th. Smoke was showing when they got there, but they were able to find the fire in the front room and knock it down quickly. No one was home. The failure of an extension cord caused the blaze.

Fire Inspector Mike Cain states, "Extension cords are designed for temporary use and be sure to use the appropriate size cord for the application. Small “zip” cords that are relatively inexpensive are not designed for large loads.”

The residence suffered heat and smoke damage throughout, with fire damage contained to the front room. No estimate has been made on damage to the home.
