HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven School Board took time to recognize Rachel Kelly as the district's 4th quarter Impact Award Winner. Kelly has served the district for the past two years as a counselor for grades K-6 at Haven Grade School.

The district says Kelly had a crucial part in creating the Community Connections Series, which helps to bring in outside services into the school, open communication for students needing extra support and providing staff with support when needed.&nbsp;

She is an active member of the District Leadership Team and an integral part of the Caring Team.

The Impact Award is given quarterly to an employee in USD 312. One of those four will be named Impact Award Winner for the year at the end of the school year.

Kelly named Impact Award Winner for fourth quarter

HALSTEAD, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for a local campground.

The Spring Lake Resort near Halstead was issued the advisory May 7 after a water line break which resulted in lost pressure in the system.&nbsp;

The advisory is not COVID-19 related and will remain in effect until the water is tested and KDHE says it is safe.

Spring Lake Resort under water advisory

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will look over revisions to the academic honesty policy when they meet Tuesday evening. The revisions are mostly language related but does lessen the penalty for dishonesty in the classroom.

The current language states that a student caught cheating can be dismissed from the course and even the school depending on the severity of the incident. The student is not able to take a withdrawal from the class. Under the revision, a student would be sanctioned for the work done and would be allowed to make up the work under certain circumstances. The student could still be dismissed from the course and under the most severe sanctions, the student could still be dismissed from the school.

Also Tuesday, the board will seek approval of a contract for new men’s basketball coach Tommy DeSalme with a base salary of $70,000 per season along with a long list of team performance incentives including graduation rates.

Finally, the board will seek approval to enter into the K-JUMP lawsuit that many K-12 schools are entering. The lawsuit seeks to recover funds connected to the cold spell which sent natural gas bills soaring.

Tuesday’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Shears Technology Center on the HutchCC campus.

Hutch CC BOT meets Tuesday evening

Kan. — Speaker Terrance Tally, who spoke to Hutch High students virtually earlier this year, is coming to HMS-8 on Wednesday along with the band 10 Talents.

"We're both represented by the same agency," said Eric Wagler with 10 Talents. "We've been touring together. This will be the third year that we've been touring with Terrence. We both kind of have a similar message of hope and don't let go and never give up."

Wagler knows that the band is able to reach kids in a way others can't.

"It breaks down walls," Wagler said. "It's a much quicker way to just break down those walls and to open up the central message."

After the HMS-8 event, there will be a concert at The Father's House at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

"That night is more open to the public," Wagler said. "Any age group can show up that night. The whole event probably lasts, you know, an hour and a half. We set up all our gear, all our lights, smoke and haze and mirrors and everything else. It will be a lot of fun, a lot of original music. Terrence will talk a little bit during that as well and share a little bit more of his story."

Tally and 10 Talents are touring at Kansas schools and churches this week.

The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education Monday (May 10, 2021) approved one year of funding for piloting the Leader in Me curriculum for eight of its schools during a regular meeting.

Leader in Me is designed for K-12 students and fits in with the district’s two primary focuses for the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation, which are rigor and relevance. The curriculum was created by the same organization that developed 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The program is based on the See-Do-Get Cycle. When a person changes the way things are seen, it influences what the individual does and the results the person gets.

Earlier this spring, district administrators went through the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People training as background for the new initiative. Schools that will pilot Leader in Me are Hutchinson High School, HMS-8, HMS-7, Wiley, Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen, Graber, Faris and McCandless.

Approved continuing the use of Newsela in the district.

Approved the purchase of furniture for the Parents as Teachers and Head Start programs.

Set a special Board meeting at 6 p.m. on June 7 for RSP to present on the status of its comprehensive facilities study for the district.

Approved minutes for the April 26, 2021, Board meeting.

Approved the accounts payable report for April 2021.

USD 308 Board approves ‘Leader in Me’

The Reno County Health Department, 209 W. 2nd, will be open Saturday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to noon for walk-in Moderna or Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccinations. The Health Department also accepts walk-ins during their normal operating hours.

Almost 70% of Reno County’s 65 and over population have been vaccinated and over 35 percent of Reno County Residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine. The greatest hesitancy for vaccination is within the 20 to 49 age group. The largest increases in cases over the past 14 days has been in the 10 - 19 and 30 - 39 age groups.

The vaccine is FREE to anyone over the age of 16, regardless of citizen status or insurance, anywhere it is offered. COVID-19 vaccine clinic Saturday at Reno County Health Department

An Attica woman rolled her vehicle with two small children inside Sunday afternoon in Reno County.

According to official reports, 25-year-old Mallorie McNett was southbound on Langdon Road when her passenger side tires went off the pavement. McNett over corrected and lost control of the vehicle as it veered off the roadway, rolled, and came to rest after striking some trees. 

McNett and her two children, 3 years old and 6 months, received only minor scrapes. All 3 were properly restrained and airbags deployed. The vehicle was towed from the scene.&nbsp;

The accident was reported at 4:11 p.m. Sunday.

The Addicts Against Overdose group that is working to make harm reduction, including access to Naloxone an available option in Reno County, is now <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-aao-become-a-501c3?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=poster">seeking official non-profit status</a>.

"WSU does do a non-profit start up help," said board member Ana Woodburn. "There's different segments like a consultation. There's just different parts of that that cost different amounts. The total amount is around $5500."

The group has been volunteering for years, but becoming an official non-profit could allow them to get additional help.

"We have some connections in other harm reduction places across the country that have helped us out in different ways," Woodburn said. "Our hope is, that if we can get the 501(c)3 that we can get grants to help, or sponsorships from other non-profits to have better access to lifesaving measures."

The group is continuing distribution of Narcan in Hutchinson. A distribution event will be happening Friday, May 14th, starting at 5 p.m. at 1329 E 4th Ave, corner of 4th and Lorraine in front of Shillelagh Vapor &amp; The Ravens Horn. Distributors will be there until at least 7 p.m. 

"It started with Narcan in Oxford Houses, so people could have it handy after we had our first overdose in an Oxford House a couple years ago," Woodburn said. "Since then, we've gotten it to businesses, places like gas stations, motels, doing trainings with businesses on how to use Narcan and things like that."

As of Monday afternoon, the group was over 10% toward their goal.

Local harm reduction group seeking nonprofit status

NICKERSON,
Kan. — 
Additional officers from the Reno County Sheriff's Office were deployed to Nickerson High School Monday morning after a threat was found in a bathroom there on Friday.

"We had a male write, I guess you could call it a bomb threat, that he had a bomb, on our men's restroom stall," said Penny Stoss with USD 309. "We just had extra police there just in case today. The investigation has been completed. It's been determined that the threat was not credible and the issue has already been resolved."

The district added the presence Monday until they had a chance to talk to the writer and any other witnesses. 

"The investigation started around 2:30 on Friday," Stoss said. "It's pretty much completed, we just couldn't finish it until the students were back in the building so we could talk to the students in question."

As those involved are juveniles, no further information can be released by the school.

Threat at Nickerson High found to be not credible

HUTCHINSON – When Danny Owens and his wife Jenna (HHS class of ’08), decided to move closer to family last year, little did he know that he would be charged with teaching math, starting a gaming program, and coaching an eSports team at MidTown Center. While pioneering this type of virtual sporting, Owens has started implementing nationally accepted curriculum with components like teaching effective anger management and impulse control. As he explains, “Gaming allows the kids to do something they love in a controlled environment and also be able to learn vital soft skills for the future.”

Kevin Stucky, Director of Alternative Education for USD 308, praises the program for encouraging students to think differently. He explains, “In addition to engaging students that might otherwise not love academia, eSports offer a way for students with unique interests to learn invaluable life lessons that can be taught in other contact team sports. Providing students with technical experience in sought-after career fields such as programming, eSports increases employability.”

Owens immediately hit the ground running by securing a $5,000 grant from ONEOK to supply the program with a total of twelve computers. Modeling after the highly successful program at Maize Complete High School, the school has developed a 3-year plan that will allow high school students to mentor middle school gamers, benefitting the older students with work experience and the younger children with positive role models and technology exposure.

MidTown will be relocating to Avenue A next year, where a similar Entrepreneurship Lab will be added to provide hands-on experience for establishing and running small businesses. The goal of MidTown Center is to provide all graduates with a certification that can help them with their post-secondary job search.

Kan. — Trucks, Taps and Tunes, an event that Hospice and Homecare of Reno County hopes to make an annual tradition will have its first edition on Saturday.

"It's got lots of fun activities," said Tara Dahlstrom with Hospice and Homecare of Reno County. "It's a family friendly event. We're going to have live bands all day, food and drink trucks there, there's going to be a cornhole tournament, a craft brewery tasting, inflatables, yard games, there's so much to do and it's going to be a great time."

The event is designed as a fundraiser and as a thank you to the community for their continued support even during the pandemic.

"A lot of our other fundraisers we've been doing for years and it's a little bit more closed," Dahlstrom said. "This one is more open for everyone, just trying to promote awareness of our organization and the services throughout the entire community."

Admission price is $10 and can be purchased online at HospiceRenoCounty.com, by calling 620.665.2473 or visiting the office at 2020 N. Waldron, Suite 100.

"We're going to be kind of at the corner of Carey Park Boulevard and Acres Street," Dahlstrom said. "You will not be able to miss us. We'll have lots of stuff set up there. If they just come down Carey Park Boulevard, we're kind of right in the middle before you go under the railroad tracks."

There is no admission charge for those 15 years of age and younger. All proceeds benefit Hospice &amp; HomeCare of Reno County.

Trucks, Taps and Tunes event coming up Saturday

Kan. — Reno County Public Works announced Monday that due to potential rain in the forecast, the crossroad pipe replacement on&nbsp;Longview Road between Rayl Road and Victory Road is now going to be later in the week.&nbsp;

Public Works said they are now planning the closure for&nbsp; Wednesday and Thursday of this week.&nbsp;

The area is located just south of Haven. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the day Thursday.

The City of Hutchinson's Planning Commission, Building Trades Board and Board of Zoning Appeals all have meetings scheduled for Tuesday.

The Building Trades Board will meet first at 4 p.m. in the City Council Conference Room. On its agenda is a pair of cases from Jim Strawn of Strawn Contracting to discuss revising Contractor License and Registration Requirements and a second case to discuss a change to the vapor barrier requirement under basement floor slabs.

The Board of Zoning Appeals will consider a case for a variance to  construct a detached garage that projects in front of the front wall of the principal structure at 4812 Sequoia Street. If granted, the variance would honor the current zoning front yard setback requirement, but the building would project 5 feet nearer the front line than the front of the house. This variance, if granted, would

allow the garage/shop to be constructed near the existing concrete driveway. Appeals in similar previous cases have been denied. The meeting is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

The Planning Commission will look at the preliminary plat and final plat for 401 W 1st Avenue and 19 N Madison Street and a replat at 4509 Winged Foot Drive. That meeting also has a scheduled 5:30 p.m. start. 

The Board of Zoning Appeals and the Planning Commission will meet in the City Council chambers. All meetings are at City Hall at 125 East Ave B.

Recent obituaries

The first good thunderstorm of the season swept through my area late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. It rolled in from the west with a brilliant light show and booming bass of thunder reverberating through our windows.

It started simply enough. The air, still warm from the day, stirred. Trees began to shake in a cool breeze that grew to a howl. My daughter was home from college for the weekend, and we took in the sights and sounds from the front porch until the chilly air and sheets of rain chased us inside.

I’ve never grown tired of watching storms come in, even in Kansas where they occur with regularity. The mix of beauty and the potential for destruction tap into something primal. The allure and angst are as intertwined as lightning and thunder.

Some of my first memories of watching storms are in the small sunroom in my childhood home. The thick panes of glass in the south-facing room coupled with the home’s hillside elevation provided the ideal enclosure for viewing the ferocity of Mother Nature.

The best storms are always at night. Darkness heightens your other senses, so you feel the ground shake from thunder or hearing the rain come in wind-blown sheets. The smell of damp earth is strong enough to taste. Even when a bolt of electricity illuminates the sky, it offers only a flash of the world around you.

Usually, I’d watch storms alone by virtue of being the only one awake when one passed through. Sometimes though my dad would pull up a chair beside me and we’d take it all in silence for a few minutes before he chided me to get to bed.

I get a sense of calm watching a storm system move over me, though being a few steps from the basement certainly helps. I know there are those who chase so-called “supercells” in hopes of spotting the truly terrifying phenomenon of tornadoes. I understand it, but that’s a little too much thrill seeking for my taste. Living in Kansas, I’ve had enough close calls with twisters to satisfy my curiosity.

Another good perspective for watching a storm was from the hayfield. While we usually didn’t want any rain on the drying grasses, we also could see for miles. Sometimes that was enough to see the cumulonimbus clouds build thousands of feet in the air as the squall line developed far enough away the sun was still shining on us.

Whether I’m watching a storm from near or far, I always feel incredibly small. The combination of wind and rain and lightning and thunder is the result of two air masses colliding and releasing more energy than the atomic bomb blast at Hiroshima.

Despite all the havoc thunderstorms can cause, they do bring rain that helps crops grow in fields and gardens. Sometimes they provide a much-needed respite from working those fields. Other times the cool, calm day after the storm is the reward. Either way, I usually find myself looking forward to the chance to watch the next one.

The mix of beauty and the potential for destruction tap into something primal. The allure and angst are as intertwined as lightning and thunder.Some of my first memories of watching storms are in the small sunroom in my childhood home. The thick panes of glass in the south-facing room coupled with the home’s hillside elevation provided the ideal enclosure for viewing the ferocity of Mother Nature.The best storms are always at night. Darkness heightens your other senses, so you feel the ground shake from thunder or hearing the rain come in wind-blown sheets. The smell of damp earth is strong enough to taste. Even when a bolt of electricity illuminates the sky, it offers only a flash of the world around you.Usually, I’d watch storms alone by virtue of being the only one awake when one passed through. Sometimes though my dad would pull up a chair beside me and we’d take it all in silence for a few minutes before he chided me to get to bed.I get a sense of calm watching a storm system move over me, though being a few steps from the basement certainly helps. I know there are those who chase so-called “supercells” in hopes of spotting the truly terrifying phenomenon of tornadoes. I understand it, but that’s a little too much thrill seeking for my taste. Living in Kansas, I’ve had enough close calls with twisters to satisfy my curiosity.Another good perspective for watching a storm was from the hayfield. While we usually didn’t want any rain on the drying grasses, we also could see for miles. Sometimes that was enough to see the cumulonimbus clouds build thousands of feet in the air as the squall line developed far enough away the sun was still shining on us.Whether I’m watching a storm from near or far, I always feel incredibly small. The combination of wind and rain and lightning and thunder is the result of two air masses colliding and releasing more energy than the atomic bomb blast at Hiroshima.Despite all the havoc thunderstorms can cause, they do bring rain that helps crops grow in fields and gardens. Sometimes they provide a much-needed respite from working those fields. Other times the cool, calm day after the storm is the reward. Kan. —&nbsp;Mennonite Friendship Communities is holding an event on Saturday, May 15 to allow people to look at what retirement might be like for them.

"Our campus is 62 and above for our market rate units," said Kristen Birket with mfc. "For our Friendship Place, which is income eligible, it's 55 and above. It's a senior living campus."

At least one full-time resident of each apartment must fit the age guidelines. 

"It's from 1 to 4 p.m. on May 15," Birket said. "It's an open house. They can either just come to our front entrance for our independent living or they can just go to a duplex or an apartment if they just want to see one of those. We'll have people there."

There will be special deals for those who commit after the open house.
