&nbsp;The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of 
     east central Colorado
     western and central Kansas
     northern Oklahoma.

This watch is effective Monday night and Tuesday morning from 8:25 p.m. until 300 a.m. 

Primary threats include:
 •&nbsp; Scattered damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 80
 mph possible
 •&nbsp; Scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2
 inches in diameter possible &nbsp;•&nbsp; A tornado or two possible


   Summary:&nbsp; Thunderstorms are expected to rapidly increase in coverage
   and intensity by late evening, with one or two organizing clusters
   developing and posing increasing potential for severe wind gusts, in
   addition to large hail.



   The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 110
   statute miles east and west of a line from 75 miles north of Dodge
   City KS to 40 miles west southwest of Alva OK.&nbsp;

Remember:&nbsp; A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
   favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.
   Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening
   weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible

Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued

Central Christian School is gearing up for a packed weekend as alumni, students and families return to campus for homecoming and reunion festivities.

The weekend begins Friday with a golf tournament at Willowbrook Golf Course, a four-person scramble with registration at 8:30 a.m. and a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Spots are still available for more teams, you can contact the school at (620) 663-2174 if you would like to enter.&nbsp; 

Later that morning, the school will host Grandparents Day at 9:45, followed by an afternoon and evening full of activities leading into the football game.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday, visitors can enjoy inflatables, yard games, campus tours and a pulled pork meal offered by the eighth-grade class. The Cougars, currently undefeated at 3-0, will face Fairfield at 7 p.m. During halftime, alumni from different decades will be recognized on the field, along with Central Christian's state championship golf team.

Saturday’s schedule includes a craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a chili feed from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can also tour the newly opened Jay and Connie Schrock Family Early Education School.

Superintendent John Walker said the weekend is about more than athletics, highlighting the strong school culture that emphasizes service and community. Students at Central Christian participate in service learning, from helping set up and clean the lunchroom to completing 30 hours of community service annually.

Walker added that the school’s athletics, including its popular eight-man football program, are focused on character and discipleship as much as competition. “The best part of the game and of athletics is to see young men pursue Christ and grow in their relationships together and with the Lord,” he said.

The public is invited to attend the events, which are open throughout the weekend.

Ag Minute:  President Trump considering financial assistance for farmers 

&nbsp;Three Hutchinson High School graduates will be recognized this week as the 2025–26 class of the school’s Wall of Honor.

The inductees will be formally installed on the Wall of Honor before the Salthawks’ homecoming football game at approximately 6:20 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at Gowans Stadium.

Bret Ballard - Class of 1998 Ballard, a standout basketball player, went on to compete for Hutchinson Community College and the University of Kansas, where he was part of a Final Four team under coach Roy Williams. He later served on KU’s staff under Bill Self, helping win a national championship. Since 2017, Ballard has led Washburn University’s men’s basketball program, earning multiple NCAA Division II tournament appearances and a conference title.

Glenna Burden, Class of 1991 Burden, who excelled in debate and forensics while at HHS, qualified three times for national competition and ranked among the nation’s top 15 high school debaters. A magna cum laude graduate of Southwestern College, she went on to earn a master’s degree from Friends University. Today, she teaches government and English, advocates for student empowerment, and advises numerous extracurricular activities at Hutchinson High.

Dwight Hemmerling, Class of 1966
 &nbsp;Hemmerling, a 1966 graduate, was a multi-sport athlete, earning All-State football honors and a state wrestling championship. At Kansas State University, he competed in both sports before graduating and commissioning into the U.S. Army. His 25-year career in education included service as a building administrator, athletic director, and board member for the Kansas State High School Activities Association. He was named Kansas Middle School Athletic Director of the Year in 2003 and later worked with TECH, supporting individuals with disabilities. He remains active in church and community service.

The Wall of Honor is sponsored by Hutchinson High School and the HHS Alumni Association to recognize graduates who have made significant contributions in their careers and communities.

Three-day weather outlook

Fall field trips are in full swing for children and their teachers. While a teacher might notify parents of an upcoming field trip a week or two before the big day, the preparation work needed for a field trip to become reality sometimes happens many months prior.

While our family’s farm has hosted many groups in the past to talk about farming sorghum, wheat, corn or soybeans in central Kansas, the requests for visits have definitely increased since we began growing and marketing popcorn. 

Perhaps it’s because our Kansas-grown popcorn can be found in stores. Maybe it’s because we have a presence on social media or because it’s a catchy name. It might also be the fact that we have been open and willing to share our family’s farming story in the past.

Whatever the reason, growing popcorn has allowed us to connect with many young learners in recent years.

We recently welcomed two large groups of children out to the farm specifically to show them our popcorn operation. We walked them through our popcorn business, showing them the steps in the journey to getting our popcorn growing in a field to ultimately getting our popcorn into someone’s kitchen.

The planning for these groups began last spring shortly after the popcorn had been planted in the ground. It was difficult to determine when the best time would be to visit a popcorn field in the fall given a variety of factors like weather and harvest.

Sometimes we have harvested our popcorn as early as Labor Day weekend. Other years it’s been closer to October.

Ultimately, we decided on our date, put it on the calendar and made sure that they all knew that we might need to make adjustments.

It’s rained a lot this summer, which has delayed the start of harvest so the original date worked. School-aged children from around our county made their way out to our farm to learn all about the popcorn business.

We took them out into a field to show them the differences between popcorn and field corn. We talked about different varieties of popcorn. We went through some of the planting requirements, irrigation needs, the growing season, pollination and harvest.

The kids got to hand shell popcorn and took moisture readings right in the field just like we do to determine when the popcorn is ready to be picked. They discovered the popcorn needs to dry down just a bit more to fit within our tight moisture percentage allowances.

We took them inside to show them the steps taken once we receive an online order or a phone call from one of our bulk poppers. They watched as we bagged popcorn and got orders ready to ship that day. They even helped us test quality control standards by snacking on some freshly popped popcorn as well.

These young learners were attentive and curious and they asked fantastic questions. And they now know a local farmer they can reach out to when they have additional inquiries.

It was fun to share our family’s popcorn story with our visitors. And while they came specifically to learn about our jumbo mushroom popcorn, I’m convinced they all went home knowing a little more about not just our family’s farming story but a lot more about agriculture in general. 

When we first started growing popcorn, we never imagined it would allow us to meet so many folks. Yet here we are today, connecting with people all because of our little popping crop.

The Kansas Forest Service (KFS) has released new details for its invasive tree buyback program, offering Kansans another opportunity to replace callery pear trees with more sustainable options.

In its Sept. 10 newsletter, KFS announced that registration is now open for the 2025 Callery Pear Buyback Event, sponsored by Evergy. The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 2610 Claflin Road in Manhattan, where staff will distribute 125 replacement trees.

To participate, residents must provide either before-and-after photos of a removed callery pear tree or documentation from an arborist confirming its removal. Each household is limited to one replacement tree.

Callery pear trees, once popular in landscaping, are now classified as invasive in Kansas due to their rapid spread and ability to outcompete native plants. They are also prone to breaking during storms, which increases the risk of property damage.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) reinforced the state’s stance earlier this year by establishing a quarantine on Callery pear trees and related species in Feb. 2024. Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, the sale or transportation of Callery pear trees will be prohibited statewide.

The buyback program is part of ongoing efforts to protect native ecosystems and encourage healthier, more resilient tree planting across Kansas.

Startup Hutch is rolling out a series of new programs and opportunities aimed at supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs across Reno County.

Executive Director Graham Klemme said the organization is working to connect local founders with both regional and statewide resources. Among them is the return of monthly business consulting with Brandy Willett of the Kansas Small Business Development Center at Wichita State University. Willett will be available at the Hutchinson Public Library on the third Friday of each month for one-on-one advising sessions.

Klemme also highlighted the Excel Kansas microgrant program, which offers awards ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 for high-growth, technology-based business ideas. Reno County has been allocated one of the grants. The program is a partnership between the Kansas Department of Commerce and Groover Labs in Wichita, providing recipients with funding, coworking access, and prototyping support.

Startup Hutch continues to host its monthly Entrepreneur Connections event on the fourth Tuesday at Sandhills Brewing, where local business owners and support professionals gather to network. This month’s featured entrepreneur is Kendall Evans of NACL Comic Cons and NACL Studio.

Looking ahead, Klemme said Hutchinson businesses can take part in Launch Week, a rebranded version of Wichita Startup Week, scheduled for Sept. 29 through Oct. 3. The weeklong event features pitch competitions, networking opportunities and startup workshops.

Startup Hutch is also preparing to host an AI for Small Businesses workshop on Oct. 24 at Wool Market &amp; DIY School in downtown Hutchinson. The session, led by Wichita State’s Troy Tabor, will demonstrate practical applications of artificial intelligence tools for entrepreneurs.

In addition, the organization has launched StartupHutch.online, a new web hosting service designed to reduce costs for small businesses. The platform provides templated websites built on WordPress for a nominal fee, helping businesses establish a professional online presence without the expense of a standard subscription.

“We want to remove as many barriers as possible,” Klemme said. “From digital tools to networking events, our goal is to make sure local entrepreneurs have the support they need to succeed.”

&nbsp;A pickup truck pulling a camper went off the roadway Friday north of Lyons, but authorities say no one was injured.

According to the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded just after the noon hour Sept. 19 to Kansas Highway 14, about two miles north of Lyons. Investigators said the truck left the roadway and overcorrected, causing the camper trailer to whip around and the vehicle to enter a ditch.

Rice County Emergency Services evaluated the driver at the scene, who declined further medical treatment.

The sheriff’s office thanked Rice County EMS, the Lyons Police Department and Lyons Wrecker Service for their quick response and assistance in clearing the highway.

Officials said they were grateful the incident resulted in no injuries — and noted that a family pet traveling in the vehicle received plenty of affection from first responders.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A new volunteer organization in Reno County is working to fill what its founders see as a gap in Kansas emergency response. Seek1 Search &amp; Rescue, a nonprofit formed this year, will provide trained teams to assist law enforcement and families when people go missing in wilderness, water or rural settings.

“In December of last year, a gentleman by the name of Mr. Foster wandered out from his farmhouse and went missing, and there was a large community effort to go out and search for him,” said Alex Miller, one of the group’s leaders. “Through that process, there was a team of skilled search and rescuers who came up from Oklahoma … and what some of us noticed was this was sort of a hole in the Kansas emergency response space.”

Miller said Seek1 recently received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and has already assisted on three searches over the summer. “Most of our calls [will come] through the sheriff’s or the police department … really anytime somebody goes missing out in the wilderness, we would be there to help,” he said.

The group is focused on building equipment and training. “The first thing that we’re starting with is a command trailer with tracking software,” Miller said. “Once we have our command trailer set up, we’ll move on to things such as drones or ROVs … even boats for water searches.”

When fully operational, Seek1 will train about 30 core volunteers, supported by a wider network of helpers. “Long term, we will hope to have a very expansive network of volunteers who get a blast a text or an email anytime we need that extra manpower for boots on the ground,” Miller said. “Everybody on that team will also have to go through … CPR and First Aid training, ICS training … and SAR tech.”

To support its startup costs, Seek1 will hold its first fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Pleasantview Activity Center, 5015 S. Dean Road in Hutchinson. The event will feature a donation-based dinner of hamburgers, hot dogs, sides, drinks and homemade ice cream, followed by live music from the band Close to Land of Arlington.

“What we’re hoping to do there is raise some funds for continued building out of our gear and our resources,” Miller said. “There are a lot of things that sort of go into building out this team, both physical equipment and training.”

The evening will also include a short presentation on Seek1’s mission and a chance for community members to meet volunteers. “We’re excited to be getting off the ground and getting this organization going,” Miller said.

For more than 70 years, AAA's ‘Your Driving Costs’ analysis has offered valuable insights into vehicle ownership expenses. This year’s analysis shows that the total cost of owning and operating a new vehicle is $964.78 per month, or $11,577 annually, a $719 decline from 2024.

Factors contributing to this decline include depreciation, lower finance charges, reduced fuel prices, and a shift towards more affordable vehicle options. AAA advises potential buyers to consider these costs to choose the best vehicle type and model for their budget.

"It might be tempting to rush to the dealer for a new car when you notice a drop in ownership costs this year," said Greg Brannon, AAA's director of automotive research. "However, consumers should factor in all the expenses involved before making any commitments."

Depreciation, which is the difference between a car's purchase price and its resale value, is the most significant cost of vehicle ownership. This year, depreciation has decreased, with vehicles+9 in the YDC study losing an average of $4,334 in value per year compared to $4,680 annually in 2024.

Categories driving lower costs this year include:

Finance Charges - Estimated finance costs have decreased to $1,131 in 2025, down 15 percent compared to $1,332 in 2024. *Please note: Sticker price decrease is partially due to new vehicles in YDC.

Fuel Prices - The average fuel cost dropped to 13.00 cents per mile, a 12.8% decrease from last year, while regular grade gasoline for YDC vehicles averaged $3.151 per gallon, down from $3.539. Meanwhile, electricity prices for charging electric vehicles rose slightly to 16.7 cents per kilowatt hour, up from 15.9 cents in 2024.

Choosing the vehicle that suits your needs is important, as it can lead to significant savings over time. For example, while a pickup truck is ideal for heavy-duty hauling and towing, it comes at a steep cost, averaging an additional $6,402 per year compared to a small sedan, which operates at just 55.87 cents per mile—43.3 percent less than a pickup. This comparison highlights the importance of selecting a vehicle based on actual transportation needs.

Similarly, according to this year’s AAA EV survey, consumers are increasingly drawn to electric vehicles (EVs) for their gas savings and lower maintenance costs, with EVs having the second-lowest maintenance expenses among all vehicle categories. Hybrid options are also appealing, offering the lowest maintenance fees while sharing similar lower fuel cost benefits, even considering the national average electricity price of 16.7 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Ultimately, whether opting for a pickup, a small sedan, or an EV, weighing these factors carefully to make a well-budgeted decision can lead to ownership savings.

Comparison of EV and Hybrid Ownership Costs to Gas-Powered

Home sales in South Central Kansas fell by 7.5% in August compared to the prior year. Sales in August&nbsp;2025 totaled 939 units, down from 1,015 in 2024.  

Among existing homes, 703 units sold in August, a decrease of 5.8% from 746 units that sold in 2024. 

The average sale price of existing homes was $278,002. This represents an increase of 3.2% from the August 2024 average price of $269,393.  

For new construction, 85 sales occurred in August, down from 88 units the prior year, a decrease of 3.4%. The average sale price of new homes in August was $388,695, down 4.8% from the same period last year.  

A total of 1,011 contracts for sale were written in August 2025, up from 945 in August 2024. This is an increase of 7.0%. Contracts written during the month reflect, in part, sales that are set to close in the near future.  

The inventory of active listings in South Central Kansas stood at 2,421 units at the end of August, which is up from 1,886 homes that were on the market at the end of August last year. At the current rate of sales, this figure represents 2.8 months' supply of homes on the market.

KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has lifted the boil water advisory for the City of Hutchinson’s public water supply system.

The advisory had been in effect for customers in the High Pressure Zone after a water line break caused a brief loss of pressure. Affected neighborhoods included Spyglass, Quail Ridge, Panorama, Lakeview, Hillcrest, Woodlands, and Sandhills. Prairie Hills Middle School was not included in the advisory.

City officials issued the precautionary notice because a loss of water pressure can result in a drop in chlorine levels, which helps protect against bacterial contamination.

Following laboratory testing, KDHE confirmed that drinking water samples showed no evidence of bacteriological contamination and that all conditions which placed the system at risk have been resolved.

Public water suppliers in Kansas are required to promptly notify customers in the event of a system failure or shutdown. KDHE is responsible for announcing when advisories are rescinded after testing confirms water safety.

Residents in the affected areas can now safely resume normal water use.

Organizers say the vigil will provide a space for the community to share memories, support one another, and pay tribute in a peaceful setting.

Candlelight vigil for Charlie Kirk to be held Friday night  

WASHINGTON, DC – Pacific Northwest drivers, who already pay some of the highest gas prices in the country, saw their state averages surge this past week. 

A pipeline outage caused a spike in fuel prices in Oregon and Washington. Up until today, Washington was the state with the most expensive gas for several days, surpassing California which is bracing for hikes of its own.

Refinery maintenance&nbsp;<a href="https://www.energy.ca.gov/news/2025-09/californias-petroleum-watchdog-issues-market-update-and-consumer-advisory-amid" target="_blank">this fall</a>&nbsp;is expected to lead to decreased production and higher gas prices in the Golden State.

Meanwhile, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline went up a penny since last week to $3.20. Even though West Coast drivers are feeling pain at the pump, prices remain relatively low in the Plains and the South.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the event, visitors will have the opportunity to see firsthand how Superior Boiler’s equipment is built and learn about the wide variety of career paths available in manufacturing.

“Superior Boiler is proud of the work we do every day, from the equipment we build to the customers we serve,” said Doug Wright, Superior Boiler President &amp; CEO. “Manufacturing Day allows us to open our doors and share both our growing facilities and the craftsmanship of our employees. As a part of the Hutchinson community, we’re excited to give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at what our team does day in and day out.”

Those who visit Superior Boiler on Manufacturing Day will see: •&nbsp; A brief presentation about the history of Superior Boiler and its mark on the boiler industry. •&nbsp; A preview of the company’s new in-progress building, which will expand its manufacturing footprint in Hutchinson. •&nbsp; State-of-the-art equipment, such as Superior’s CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machines. •&nbsp; Skilled welders in action. •&nbsp; Final assembly and boiler testing processes.

Personal Protective Equipment, including safety glasses and hearing protection, will be provided and must be worn during the tour. Guests should wear closed-toe shoes (such as tennis shoes or boots); open-toe shoes like sandals or flip-flops are not permitted.
