HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Cosmosphere hopes that the approaching spring break will continue the strong flow of visitors to the space museum. The Cosmosphere just recently completed a renovation of a portion of the Hall of Space Museum, which opened to the public this winter.

“The story of the space race and the development of the technology to explore space is told with a better chronology and a better visitor flow,” Maria Kelson of the Cosmosphere said.&nbsp;

The tour still begins in the V-2 area as it has before but has more space and better lighting. It also has several new artifacts from the space race including a better view of one of the Cosmosphere's more popular artifacts and two small items that carried a big significance in the space race.

“You can walk almost 360 degrees around the flight-ready backup of Sputnik that we have so you can get just right up-close and personal with our Sputnik,” Kelson said. “Another thing I’m excited about, there are slide rules (Wernher) von Braun and (Sergei) Korolev on display.”

It was von Braun who led the American space program after WWII and helped with the design of the Saturn V rocket that got America to the moon ahead of the Russians. Korolev was the mastermind behind the Soviet space program and was the leader of many firsts for the program in the early years of the Cold War.

Shannon Wetzel is the curator for the many artifacts that are in the Cosmosphere’s possession and says the renovation of the V-2 area is exciting since it is the oldest area of the museum. She also wants to make sure in the modern STEM environment for students that the historic significance of space flight isn’t forgotten.

“STEM came from somewhere and you can come down here and see the history of it,” Wetzel said. “The story of the space race as it fits into the Cold War is such a crucial part of our history.”

The expansion also includes the new interactive area called CosmoKids and a more open and expanded Bell X-1 display. The Bell X-1 plane carried General Chuck Yeager to the first flight beyond the sound barrier.

Cosmosphere renovation offers brighter experience

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Prairie Hills Middle School recently hosted the Patriot League West Division League Math Relays.&nbsp;

The contest consisted of six teams: Prairie Hills, Wellington, Clearwater, Mulvane, Haysville West, and Rose Hill.&nbsp;

Students took an 80 question timed computation test and an 80 timed question problem solving test and received points based on how many problems they had correct.

Both the PHMS 7th and 8th grade teams took first. There were also medals for the top five individuals, which included 7th grade champion Brendan Ronan, runner-up Owen Kneisel and fourth place finisher Asher Zachary. Ben Rusenbark finished in second place for the 8th grade.

PHMS students do well in math competition

MARION COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 5p.m. Thursday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Chevy Equinox driven by&nbsp; Jaquin Smith, 15, Tampa, Kan., was westbound on 330th Road.

The SUV&nbsp;ran the stop sign at Kansas 15 and struck a southbound Subaru Legacy driven by Joyce Ardy, 45, Hurst, Texas.

The Chevy ended up on the west side of 330th on its roof. The Subaru landed in the Southwest ditch on its roof.

EMS transported Ardy to a Wichita hospital and Smith to the hospital in Hillsboro. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas teen hospitalized after 2 vehicle crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A motion hearing for a Hutchinson man facing first-degree murder charges will be held Friday in Reno County District Court.

The defense for Sandral Wade has filed a motion to have the trial continued. It is scheduled to start March 22.

Wade is accused in the shooting death of Orlando Gipson in April of 2020. He also faces one count of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Landre Bowie. Wade was bound over for trial following a preliminary hearing in August of last year.

The defense will present a motion before Judge Trish Rose during the 8:30 court docket.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The reported active COVID case count is still falling quickly in Reno County.

As of Thursday morning, the active case count is down to 36, the lowest since July 15 of 2021. The number of new cases is also slowing for the moment, with just seven reported in the past 24 hours.

Currently there are ten county residents hospitalized and the death toll did climb by one to 220. The number of county residents vaccinated increased to 54.5% or 34,175 county residents.

COVID cases down under 40 in Reno Co.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Regional Academy is a paid internship program for a small group of Reno County high school students.

"We end up with ten students final, but we have a good, good response from the schools," said Carey Craig, Human Resources Director with Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System. "We go through an interview and selection process and it's tough getting down to those ten. There's a lot of sharp kids out there."

To be considered an applicant must live in Reno County, be at least 16 years old, have completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade by May 31, be enrolled in a Reno County high school and have an overall and science GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale or 4.0 on a 5.0 scale.

"It actually runs Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 8 in the morning to 2:30 in the afternoon," Craig said. "It's a paid internship and it runs from May 31 through July 22."

This is the tenth year of this important initiative to help get the next generation of professionals for Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System.

"With the labor market, we have to grow our own," Craig said. "It starts in high school. It's an investment of time for us and we find generally, a lot of kids, when they think about hospitals, they think about doctors and nurses. This is really an opportunity to learn about the lab, learn about pharmacy and imaging and a lot of different opportunities. we find kids that will start out at the end of May with one thing in mind and come up with a completely different perspective at the end of the course."

Craig noted that there is one recent academy alum who is working as a phlebotomist while they are in school. The program ends with an opportunity for two of the students to receive scholarships in exchange for a commitment to work at HRMC for a year after graduation. The application deadline is March 23.

Hutchinson Regional Academy seeking next generation of HRMC workers

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran believes energy independence is key for the United States and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine brings that need to the forefront.

"I had a conversation with Sen. Schumer, the majority leader about this topic already today," Moran said Thursday. "The question is, can we change Biden administration policy that is opposed to fossil fuels and has taken significant steps to reduce the ability for the United States to be energy independent. Can we open up America for more exploration and drilling? What about the Keystone pipeline? Can we get greater refining capacity in the United States?"

The U.S. right now is still taking in Russian oil.

"We purchase about 700,000 barrels of oil and oil products from Russia every day," Moran said. "While we're giving aid on one hand to the Ukrainians to fight the Russians, it would also make a lot of sense to take away the resources that Russia has to engage in this battle. Oil markets are where they gain their most foreign currency."

Cutting the U.S. off immediately would result in some pain at the pump, and it isn't clear how much that might be, but it appears to Moran that the American people are willing to help.

"It would be painful for another dollar a gallon of gas," Moran said. "There is a price to be paid and we have to be willing to bear the burden. This is a time for our country to be united."

Moran is in favor of renewable fuels, as well, but those solutions won't come quickly enough to hit Russia in the wallet immediately the way an oil embargo would.

Seniors Thaddaeus Blakley and Micah Wenger entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2020 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The National Merit Scholarship competition is highly selective, making Blakely and Wenger representative of less than 1 percent of each state’s high school seniors.

As finalists, Blakley and Wenger are eligible for three types of scholarships offered by the National Merit Scholarship Program for students pursuing post-secondary education immediately following high school. However, both seniors have decided to take gap years following graduation to focus on volunteer work and studying abroad before beginning college. Blakley and Wenger both say the title of National Merit Finalist will give them an edge in the college application and scholarship process when they begin applying to schools.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual competition that recognizes academic excellence in high school students. The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which dates back to 1955.

HHS students named National Merit Finalists

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kroger announced its fourth quarter and year end earnings on Thursday.&nbsp;

The parent company of Dillons reported sales of $33.0 billion in the fourth quarter, compared to $30.7 billion for the same period last year. 

Total company sales, excluding fuel, increased 3.7% compared to the same period last year.&nbsp;

Earnings per share totaled $3.68 compared with $3.47 per share in 2021 and operating profit totaled $3.5 billion compared with $2.8 billion the previous year.

"Kroger's 2021 results demonstrate the strength of our value creation model, and in 2022 we expect to build on this momentum,” Kroger CFO Gary Millerchip said. "We expect to grow identical sales without fuel by 2.0% to 3.0% and grow adjusted net earnings per share to between $3.75 to $3.85. This guidance contemplates continued investments in our associates and customers, balanced with cost savings and growth in alternative profits.

For the fiscal year sales were $137.9 billion in 2021, compared to $132.5 billion in 2020.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School Board gave approval to the new calendar for the 2022-23 school year on Monday.

With the new calendar, school will start Aug. 17 for K-9 students and Aug. 18 for grades 10-12.

Students will get three days off for Thanksgiving and two full weeks for Christmas from Dec. 19 through Jan. 3. Spring break will kick off the week of March 13.

The last day of school for students will be May 25.

USD 308 approves new calendar

PRATT COUNTY—Three people were injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Wednesday in Pratt County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Ram Pro Master City Cargo Van driven by Marcela A&nbsp;Garcia, 33, Cimarron, was eastbound on U.S. 54 just west of of Northwest 40th Avenue. The driver lost control while passing a semi. 

The van traveled across the westbound lane and into the north ditch where it came to rest on its side.

EMS transported Marcela A.&nbsp;Garcia and passengers&nbsp; 49-year-old Amy L Berry and 70-year-old Debra&nbsp;Buehler both of Cimarron to Pratt Regional Medical Center. Berry was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

3 Kansas women hospitalized after van overturns in ditch

MCPHERSON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in McPherson.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021&nbsp;McPherson Fire Department&nbsp; Ford F250 driven by 38-year-old Timothy John&nbsp;Wyssmann of McPherson was northbound on Main Street at National Avenue running lights and sirens to a call.

A 2003 Ford Taurus driven by 77-year-old Mary Elizabeth Ramsey of Marion, pulled out in front of the F250.&nbsp; The fire department vehicle struck the car.

EMS transported Ramsey to a hospital in Wichita.&nbsp; A private vehicle transported a passenger in the fire department Ford identified as 29-year-old Jenae Kathryn&nbsp;Pfeiff of McPherson, to the McPherson Center for Health.&nbsp;Wyssmann was not injured. Ramsey was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Area fire crews working two separate fires in Reno County this afternoon.&nbsp;

The first is along the K and O Railroad tracks near the 9200 block of S. Halstead. The fire was caused by a passing train. Crews were able to stop the train and fix the problem.&nbsp;

The second fire is located at 11108 W. 69th Avenue which is just south of Nickerson. No word on damage or injuries from either fire at this time.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The latest round of earnings reports for companies with ties to Hutchinson and Reno County comes to an end Thursday when Kroger releases its quarterly report.

The parent company of Dillons will try to keep momentum going from a strong third quarter where it reported Kroger’s adjusted earnings of&nbsp; $0.78 cents per share, an increase of 9.9% from the same period in the previous year. The company also continued to increase its digital footprint and digital sales rose 103% from 2019 levels.

The round of earnings reports for companies in Hutchinson and Reno County has for the most part been positive, despite the challenges of COVID and supply chain issues. Only Siemens Gamesa showed red figures for the three months ending in December.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec will hold their seasonal job fair Sunday, March 13. The event will run from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Dillon Nature Center.

Workers are needed at the Salt City Splash and Buhler City Pool for lifeguards concessions, swim lesson instructors and admissions. Work available at the Dillon Nature Center includes cam counselors.

And a usual large number of workers are needed for the many recreational and sports events held at various facilities. Those positions include score keepers, gate admissions, umpires and concession stand work.

Hutch Rec to hold job fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — There has been much discussion from Reno County Commissioners regarding employee salaries and what can be done to keep employees pay up while being responsible to taxpayers.

The statement emphasized that Reno County salaries are not elevated noting that the adjusted starting pay for a Reno County Jail Deputy is now $17.19/hour. A Hutchinson Correctional Facility Officer starts at $18.26/hour. Other examples given show an Equipment Operator working for KDOT starts at $15.03/hour, while a Reno County Public Works Operator starts at $15.05 with the new adjustment.&nbsp;

The county says turnover has been high within Reno County, with almost 16% of 377 employees having been employed less than one year, and 31% employed less than 4 years. A study on wages by The Arnold Group recommended Reno County develop a plan to elevate pay levels for 188 employees to bring them up to their respective salary grade minimums.

County Commissioners approved a 2% cost of living increase for employees in December of 2021. While it was positive it was offset by consumer prices that went up 6.8% from November 2020-November 2021.

However, the wage changes recently made are starting to take a turn for the better, according to Human Resources Director Helen Foster. Foster says the impact from the study has resulted in retaining employees that previously indicated they were pursuing new employment opportunities. Additionally, the quality of applications have risen significantly leading to more job offers and new hires.&nbsp;

Kan. — The deadline is March 25 for the sidewalk program that the City of Hutchinson hopes will&nbsp;connect and promote continuous hazard-free pedestrian pathways.

The program is only for sidewalks in the Hutchinson city limits.&nbsp;

Priority will be given to neighborhoods without existing sidewalks. 

If the property owner(s) are offering “sweat” equity, the sidewalk shall meet City of Hutchinson standards and requirements.

The property owner(s) must not have outstanding permit violations and no outstanding indebtedness to the city.

Applications must be submitted to <a href="mailto:planning@hutchgov.com">planning@hutchgov.com</a> or received at City Hall by close of business March 25 for consideration. Funding is limited.

KDOT announces approved bids for upcoming projects

Schools across Kansas, including Buhler USD 313 are being told that the pandemic related lunch programs from the USDA will be ending.

"The information coming from the state department of education is that program will be discontinued June 30," said Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman. "That means, next year, everyone getting free lunches, that program will stop, along with any district being able to offer free lunches. Although, Hutchinson USD 308 and some other area schools qualify. Hutch will have their summer lunch program for sure. Buhler will not have their summer lunch program."

Buhler does not have enough students that qualify for the free or reduced lunch program to have a summer site under the pre-COVID program guidelines.

"All the school districts will go back to the free and reduced form that you had to qualify for, where you gave your income and then you could qualify for free and reduced lunches," Couchman said. "There are so many mixed feelings about that, because that was sure helpful for all our families. What a blessing that was financially for many of our families."

The free and reduced lunch form is a proxy for the overall poverty level of a district, so many federal and state programs tie their funding to that number.

"That does help, in many ways, our at-risk numbers and the way we qualify for our title money," Couchman said. "It's a double edged sword, for sure."

A student from a household with an income at or below 130 percent of the poverty income threshold is eligible for free lunch. A student from a household with an income between 130 percent and up to 185 percent of the poverty threshold is eligible for reduced price lunch. 133% of the poverty level for a family of four using 2022 poverty numbers is $36,908. 185 percent is $51,338.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two projects at the Hutchinson Airport are among thirty-six projects that have been selected for Kansas Airport Improvement Program (KAIP) funding for the purpose of planning, constructing or rehabilitating public use general aviation airports.

The airport will get a total of $95,300 for the design and construction improvements for the hangar housing the Kansas Forest Service fire fighting aircraft.

The city of Hutchinson will share in the costs by paying between 5% and 50% of the total project. The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation, which manages the program, considered 145 project applications this year with a combined total project value of over $78 million.

Hutchinson Airport receives funds for hangar improvements

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 will host three preschool application clinics this month. USD 313 offers free half day preschool for three and four year old students along with low cost child care in the same building.

The first of the three Monday evening clinics will be March 7 at Union Valley&nbsp;Elementary School. Clinics will also be held March 21 at Plum Creek Elementary and then March 28 at Buhler Grade School. All clinics run from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Parents or guardians can attend a different school's night if the listed time does not work for your student's attendance center.&nbsp;
