President Joe Biden announced this week that the U.S. will be putting one million additional barrels on the market per day on average, every day, for the next six months from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It remains to be seen if that will help matters.

"The average is at $3.78 a gallon," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "That's down a couple cents from a week ago. We've seen a little bit of downward movement. Reno County is right at the state average of $3.78 a gallon."

Kansas is the second least expensive state for gas. However, not only Russia and Ukraine, but also a return to typical summer driving demand could continue to put more upward pressure on prices.

"The gas price change due to that release will likely happen gradually over time," Steward said. "It depends on how long that release occurs. It's not the only factor out there. There's so many different geopolitical factors going on right now."

The release is designed to serve as a bridge until the end of the year when the administration says domestic production will ramp up.

"In a typical year, as we get to summer vacation season and more people hit the road for vacation, demand is typically high throughout the summer," Steward said. "We're actually doing some research right now and should have some Memorial Day and summer travel forecasts to share soon."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Friday announced that it will boost fuel efficiency requirements by 8% for both the 2024 and 2025 model years and 10% in 2026.

UPDATED: Benefit concert for fire survivors Friday night in Hutchinson with raffle

BURRTON, Kan. — One person was injured in a single vehicle accident Thursday morning.&nbsp;

The Reno County Sheriff’s Department reports that 34-year-old Jerome Love of Burrton was traveling west on US-50 around 7:35 a.m. when he lost control of his van in icy conditions. The vehicle left the road and overturned.&nbsp;

A passenger in the van, 31-year-old Tegan Barrett of Burrton was taken by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. Love was not injured in the accident.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department will once again offer The Arthritis Foundation’s Walk With Ease program. The program is designed to help people living with arthritis better manage their pain but is also ideal for those without arthritis who want to make walking a daily habit.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The free program runs for six weeks at two local facilities starting April 11. Participants will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:45 am at the Elmdale Senior Center and 3 p.m. at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center. Participants will go through 10 minutes of education, warm-up/stretching, then a 5 to 30-minute walk, ending with cool-down/stretching led by a certified instructor.&nbsp;

Class size is limited and pre-registration&nbsp; is required. Registration can be done by calling the Elmdale Senior Center at 620-663-2811 or Delos V. Smith Senior Center at 620-662-0111. Participants must be age 60 or better to participate.&nbsp;

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Pretty Prairie USD 311 will host an open registration for Pre-K students later this month. The registration for 3 and 4-year-olds will be held Tuesday, April 12 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Pretty Prairie Grade School.

Parents or guardians will need to bring a birth certificate, immunization records and proof of a physical exam. Pre-school students must be 3 or 4 years of age by August 31 to be eligible to attend. If you can not make the registration that evening, you can call the grade school at 620-459-6621 to complete the needed paperwork.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Volunteer Center/RSVP's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program continues through April 14th at the Salvation Army.

To be eligible to have your taxes done at the VITA site, you must have less than $58,000 in income in 2021.

You need to bring any applicable IRS forms, like W-2s or 1099s and if you received advance child tax credit payments, you'll need that letter, as well.&nbsp;

You also need proof of ID and Social Security cards for everyone on the return.

One of only two Saturdays that the site is open is this Saturday, April 2. They will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The site will be regularly open Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

You can walk in and have your return prepared, or drop it off to have it prepared when time is available.

The Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month is Haven Elementary second grade teacher Sharla Warren. For Warren, it's all about the kids, she thinks the biggest thing they learn isn't reading or writing, it's compassion.

"They learn how to be a friend to everyone, how to be accepting," Warren said. "I think that's a life skill that they can carry on forever."

Warren knows a lot about that skill because she started her career as a paraeducator and then ran an after school literacy program before becoming a certified teacher. Warren encourages mid-career professionals who love kids to take the leap.

"Go back to school," Warren said. "It's worth it. I went to Friends University. Friends has a wonderful adult program. I would suggest them to anyone. It's never too late, is what I would say. If it's a calling and you believe in your heart this is what you should do, then it's never too late to do it."

School hasn't been normal for these second graders any year, including this one, but Warren believes they'll get where they need to go.

"The more that we get them exposed and we get them in school, it's not normal," Warren said. "We, as teachers know it's not normal. We just have to love our kids through it and show them that we have to be in school, that's so important, learning the skills and the things that they need to become successful adults. We're all going to do this together. We can't do it without each other."

That's why compassion is so key, because building character is what will help close some of the learning gaps that the pandemic created as they go forward.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will go over bids for the new fire station that will be relocated on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The council will be asked to approve the low bid from Wiens Construction at a cost of $4,854,000. The bid is above what was placed in the CIP fund for 2022. Plans are to have the facility finished by the end of the year.

The new station will be located at the 23rd and Main gate. Originally, the fire department wanted to expand the current station at 20th and Main and had asked the fair for some land adjacent to the building. But those plans changed and now the new station will be located near the 23rd Avenue gate just north of the North Sunflower Building. The station will have direct access to Main Street. The station is usually one of the busiest in the city and makes most, if not all, calls to the fairgrounds.&nbsp;

The city has already entered into a 99 year lease agreement for the new fire station at $1 per year.

The matter comes up for action during Tuesday’s agenda session starting at 9 a.m. at the Hutchinson city offices.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — First District Congressman Tracey Mann spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday, drawing attention to dangerous tax provisions included in President Biden's proposed Fiscal Year 2023 budget.

Mann says the president’s budget includes provisions threatening the stepped-up basis and imposing capital gains taxes on property such as farms, ranches, and businesses that have been held in the family for 90 years or more. He added that the new tax on unrealized gains would inflict hundreds of thousands of dollars in new capital gains taxes and jeopardize family-owned agricultural businesses.

Mann led a resolution with 73 of his colleagues that supports the preservation of the stepped-up basis, opposes any new efforts to impose new taxes on family farms and small businesses, and recognizes the importance of generational transfers of farm and small business operations.

Child care class offered again by Reno Co. Health Department

BUHLER, Kan. — Ideatek of Buhler is expanding west. The company announced Thursday that it has established service in the small town of Bucklin.

The expansion into Bucklin is one of several community builds Ideatek has planned for 2022. Investment in fiber is a scalable solution for Kansas’ future growth.

Ideatek expands service to Bucklin

Hyatt Life Sciences Profaya is a nutritional supplement for dogs that Hutchinson veterinarian Randy Smith says is working in his patients.

"Last summer, July, August, I found out from somebody they were looking to try this product in animals, this supplement and using it in dogs to improve their quality of life, no matter what stage of life they are at," Smith said. "I got in contact with them, they let me look over some studies they had done to prove that the product was safe in dogs. They had performed a safety study and I looked over that data and decided I'd try it on some of the ones at the office."

"Out of a hundred dogs or so we've had it on, I'll say 75% or so have had a positive experience," Smith said. 

This is with no real examples of side effects in any patients thus far.

"My sister in law's dog the other day, he's a six-year-old lab, we were out visiting a month ago and he gets up and he's kind of limping around a little bit," Smith said. "I started talking to her about sending her some Profaya. When I got back here, I got some for her and I mailed it to her. In two weeks of using it, the dog's not limping right now. If she misses a day, she goes, I forgot a day, he started limping again, so I've had some like that."

Smith said check with your veterinarian before starting any new substance with your pet. Hyatt Life Sciences is based in Sterling.

Local vet touts supplement for dogs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department introduced it’s newest K-9 Officer, Stitch.&nbsp;

Stitch is a rescue from the Hutchinson Animal Shelter. Stitch is beginning his training to become the Department’s first therapy dog and will be assigned to the Crisis Response Unit.

Officer Jones and Stitch, along with the department's community partners in mental health and substance misuse, will respond to calls of persons in crisis. Studies have shown that the presence of a therapy dog can assist crisis teams in de-escalating and defusing critical situations, allowing for connection with the person in crisis.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Police introducing therapy K-9

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Twenty-two teams from 18 schools, including USD 308's Allen Elementary Hutch STEM Blue and Buhler USD 313's High School Cru Winds will travel to Topeka on Saturday with their sights set on winning a state title in the Kansas KidWind Challenge. 

To qualify for the event, each team placed first or second in their age division at one of six regional competitions held in February and March.&nbsp; 

Saturday's competition will determine the top two teams in each age bracket that will represent Kansas in the National KidWind Challenge in San Antonio, TX.

The state finals will be held at Hotel Topeka at City Center, next door to the Stormont Vail Events Center, beginning at 9 a.m. the event is free and open to the public.&nbsp;

To prepare for the KidWind competition, team members work together to design, build and test a wind turbine using the materials of their choice. Each team’s turbine will be put to the test in a 48" × 48" wind tunnel at a wind speed of approximately 3.5-5 m/s (meters per second). Scoring is based on turbine performance and efficiency, a knowledge quiz, an instant challenge, and a presentation to judges where the team explains its design process.

KidWind is an Energy Education Event from the Kansas Corporation Commission and K-State Engineering Extension made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Kansas KidWind State Finals will be held in Topeka on Saturday 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The cleanup and recovery from the Cottonwood Complex fire is taking a more direct and long-term stance. That direct recovery comes at the hands of the Mennonite Disaster Relief team who is doing the demolition work on what's left of the properties destroyed by the fire.&nbsp;

“We’ve had some great volunteers helping the VOAD clean off the properties,” Lisa Gleason of United Way said. “The recovery process now is going to start shifting to — if wells and septic systems are back up and running — getting electricity back up to properties.”

Gleason says the fire has left little for the survivors to recover in terms of small items.

“Certainly this is unprecedented, but any kind of fire . . . there’s just not much to sift through,” Gleason said. “With a tornado, there’s still maybe a wall standing and odd things that are still left to take with you.”&nbsp;

Gleason says that she is amazed at the resiliency of the survivors who are already working to rebuild or relocate. A town hall meeting was held Tuesday evening to help maintain connection between the survivors and the entities that are available to help with their needs.

“We want to make sure they know that we fill in gaps,” Gleason said. “Again, connecting to resources, leveraging volunteer help, making sure we are trying to meet their needs.”

Since there is little personal property to recover from the fires, the need for small groups to volunteer is being scaled back at this time while heavy equipment is used to move the larger debris.

“Some of them are just really good at doing this and so we’re very grateful that they have stepped up and are willing to walk alongside us in this recovery,” Gleason said. “We’re kind of at a place where we just need to take a pause and really let our families tell us what they need at this point. So we’re not taking in a lot of new jobs right now.”

Fire recovery more long-term now

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting its annual Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony in front of the Law Enforcement Center with the Hutchinson Police Department.

The ceremony will be held Friday, May 13, at 11 a.m. Peace Officers Memorial Day was started in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.&nbsp;

This year, the guest speaker will be Retired Lt. Col. Alan Stoecklein from the Kansas Highway Patrol. In addition to his distinguished career with the Kansas Highway Patrol, Lt. Col. Stoecklein also served as the interim Chief of Police for the Hutchinson Police Department before Chief Jeff Hooper was sworn in.

The ceremony will include opening and closing statements given by Sheriff Darrian Campbell and Chief Jeff Hooper, and a posting of the colors by Honor Guard members from both the Reno County Sheriff’s Office and the Hutchinson Police Department. Fallen officers from all Reno County agencies will be recognized during the ceremony and a member from the Reno County Sheriff’s Honor Guard will also play “Taps” in recognition of their sacrifice.

BUHLER, Kan. — Numerous personnel matters were taken up by the Buhler USD 313 School Board during a special meeting Tuesday night.

The board took action on three licensed staff and four classified staff resignations along with the resignation of two supplemental staff. The board also approved a number of hirings and transfers Tuesday night as well.

Also Tuesday, the board approved a memorandum of understanding for Wichita Public Schools to transport any students in USD 313 to either the Kansas School for the Blind or the Kansas School for the Deaf in Kansas City. Currently, USD 313 has one such student.

Finally, the board met for about two hours to discuss its strategic planning and goal setting with a representative from the Kansas Association of School Boards.

Buhler school board approves several personnel matters during special meeting

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department announced Wednesday that it will administer second COVID-19 booster doses to certain individuals following the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).&nbsp;

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the second booster dose on Tuesday and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) offered its full support for the updated guidelines as well. The recommendation includes certain immunocompromised individuals and those over the age of 50 who received their initial booster dose at least four months ago. In addition, the CDC recommends those who received a primary and booster dose of Johnson and Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months ago receive a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

Everyone 5 years of age and older is eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. Those 12 and older may receive a booster. The Reno County Health Department is administering vaccines during normal operating hours. Walk-ins are accepted for ages 12 and over, but appointments are required for children aged 5-11. Call 620-694-2900 and select option 6 for scheduling. The vaccine is free to any Reno County resident, regardless of citizen status or insurance.

Reno Co. Health Department begins booster shot program

Hutchinson Fire Capt. Troy Mueller said fighting wildfires in Kansas is very different today than it was in decades past.

"One of the things that's changed around here is the fuel type that we have," Mueller said. "With the cedars that we have, it's definitely changed us from an open grass prairie grass fire to really more of the fuel type that you see in Southern California, with the chapparal and stuff and when we have wind events, anytime we have wind, that's the main driver for our fires here."

It's really disheartening for firefighters to enter property that has had such overgrowth that it is impossible to defend.

"We can't even access a road if people can't get some of that stuff out of the way," said Battalion Chief Rex Albright. "There's property that's completely unsaveable for us. There's no way that we can get in front of it, with the amount of heat and flame height that we have coming at it, there's no man that can stand in front of that. It's truly up to the homeowner to start looking at that, but the cedar trees are the big thing."

Captain Ryan Winters was on the brush truck that had damage during the Cottonwood Complex Fire which Chief Beer referred to during his equipment request to the City Council earlier this month.

"We were with Brush 41 at that time, responding out of Station 4," said Winters. "We were the first truck on scene. It had already jumped 4th Street by the time we got there. We got in contact with our operations chief. We went directly to the head fire at that point and was trying to help with structure support on the north end area of the fire and trying to get it back into the burned area from the Albright Fire. We kind of got in a hairy situation with the wind shifts and everything. The fire flanked out around behind us. We were kind of trapped, trying to get back to our safe area and the fire rolled over the top of us. I was outside the vehicle at the time. We were able to make access back to the cab of the truck. At that point, everything kind of got real dicey. With zero visibility, our directional was kind of challenging at that point to see where our safe zone was. Overall, we did find it. We were able to save the structure we that were on, but the fire was moving so fast, so rapidly, we were in a tight spot there."

Mueller noted as part of the City Council presentation how important it is that firefighters continue to upgrade their equipment as it ages out.

Wildfires different due to cedar infestation

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Cosmosphere announced on Wednesday that the Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft will make a trip to Kansas City and will be displayed at the Planet Comicon April 22-24, at Bartle Hall. Planet will be the first comicon in the country to exhibit a flown, manned spacecraft.&nbsp;

Piloted by Gus Grissom, one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, the Project Mercury spacecraft’s sub-orbital flight lasted 15 minutes in 1961 and was a textbook mission until splashdown, when the hatch door prematurely ejected off the craft, filling it with seawater. While Grissom was rescued the LB7 craft sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean and stayed there for 38 years before an expedition led by the Discovery Channel and the Cosmosphere recovered it from its resting place at a depth of more than 16,000 feet.&nbsp;

In addition to the generous loan of the LB7 for display, Planet Comicon Kansas City and the Cosmosphere will work together to enhance the science and STEM-based activities at Planet, while also sharing the historical relevance of the LB7 and the Cosmosphere’s spacecraft programming.&nbsp;

Liberty Bell 7 to make trip to Kansas City event

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Mennonite Disaster Relief Service has been brought in to help in the clean up from the Cottonwood Complex fire. A meeting was held last night to get victims of the fire updated on avenues they can take in the recovery.

According to Jeff Thomson of Interfaith Housing who is teaming up with Mennonite Disaster Relief to coordinate the recovery, heavy equipment is being used to get rid of trees around properties and remove what is left on properties destroyed by the fire.&nbsp;

Thomson says that some property owners are still at work recovering what may be left although most are finding little to take with them. He says if they decide they need the heavy equipment to remove debris that they call 211 and ask for assistance.

Mennonite Disaster Relief helping with fire recovery

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man was arrested Sunday afternoon for drug distribution near Faris Elementary School.&nbsp;

Police arrested 36-year-old Brandon Smith at his home in the 400 block of East 12th Avenue on suspicion of possession of meth and drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of meth, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Smith is being held on a $36,000 bond. Formal charges are expected to be filed later this week.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man was arrested Sunday afternoon for drug distribution near Faris Elementary School.&nbsp;Police arrested 36-year-old Brandon Smith at his home in the 400 block of East 12th Avenue on suspicion of possession of meth and drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of meth, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.Smith is being held on a $36,000 bond.
