HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; The back portion of a Hutchinson home and its wrap around porch sustained most of the damage from a Tuesday afternoon fire.

According to Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer, at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, crews were called to 1704 North Wilshire Drive. 

The fire was initially called in as a brush fire, but crews quickly found that a home was ablaze, with fire showing from the back of the structure. 

The first unit pulled water to the rear and requested structure engines to the scene. High winds made the fire move quickly through the home. 

The cause of the fire was found to be an overloaded power strip. No one was hurt. The Red Cross is assisting the residents.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec will once again offer two Summer Adventure Camps at the Dillon Nature Center.

The first is a one-week camp for ages 5 through 12 and runs four weeks starting June 6. A second camp for those 9 through 12 starts Tuesday, July 5. The camps cost $110. Two more camps are available for those ages 3 through 5 and run the weeks of July 11 and July 18. The cost is $65.

Summer Adventure Camps available again

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education heard a special presentation from Head Start during their agenda session on Monday.

Each year, Head Start is required to present their progress to the Board of Education, giving insight into their program and training board members on the role Head Start plays in the district. Director of Head Start, Tamme Buller, led the presentation along with members of the district’s Head Start staff.

The meeting also included a presentation from elementary art teachers to celebrate Youth Art Month in March. Art teachers, Kylie Sampson and Paula Vogel spoke to the importance of art programs for students. The video featured pieces of student art, as well as interviews with students on their favorite art projects.

Also Monday, the board approved a new fire alarm system for the Salthawk Activity Center to replace an outdated system. The new alarms from Johnson Controls will cost the district $28,653. Johnson Controls provides fire alarm and suppression systems for the entire district. And the board approved Morgan Elementary School’s efforts to build an outdoor classroom. The spot would be used for outdoor lessons and to hear speakers during good weather. The cost of the project is $43,000. The school had filed an application to help pay for half of the cost.

USD 308 hears Head Start presentation

GYPSUM - A Gypsum man was arrested Sunday in connection to stolen items cases from Ottawa County, Great Bend and Wichita.

Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Jeremiah Hayes said this morning that deputies were asked to assist the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office in a burglary case involving a stolen skid steer and other equipment. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, through its investigation, had determined that the missing skid steer was at 419 E. Second Street in Gypsum, in southeastern Saline County.

Once in Gypsum, the Ottawa County deputies could see the skid steer on the property from the street.

Hayes said that when Theodore Meadows, 45, of Gypsum, exited the residence and saw a number of law enforcement personnel outside, he ran, but was apprehended nearby.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office obtained a search warrant and was able to recover the skid steer, a number of attachments for it, and a cordless drill.

Hayes said that during the search, a 2000 Ford F250 reported stolen out of Great Bend also was located.

Additionally, a license plate reported stolen out of Wichita was found.

In all, more than $20,000 worth of stolen equipment and items were found on the property, Hayes said.

Meadows was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Hayes.

●Two counts of felony possession of stolen property

●Misdemeanor possession of stolen property

Kansas man arrested in connection to cases from 3 counties

County Commissioners appeared to be willing to allocate at least $4.6 million and potentially up to $5 million to the overall childcare need in Reno County.

What they also asked for was some community fundraising to go with the childcare piece, along with getting private sector employers involved in the market study as it goes forward through the rest of the year and challenging the city to make the childcare piece the primary priority as they allocate their ARPA resources.

Commission Chair Daniel Friesen also wants to hear more from the childcare community in the coming months to see that the program is properly administrated.

Along with about $4 million toward housing and the previously allocated economic development and fire related funds, that leaves a little more than $1 million for all the other priorities that have been proposed. 

The commission agreed to come back in a month and find out progress on the larger requests and details on how to spend the remainder from the county administrator in a study session following their regular meeting on April 26.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Pretty Prairie USD 311 Schools and the small town of Geneseo in Rice County are among 28 communities and school districts that will receive grants to help fund waste tire disposal efforts.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s (KDHE) Bureau of Waste Management annual waste tire grants are awarded to local municipalities and public and private schools K-12 across the state.&nbsp;

The grants totaled $436,172.81 and will fund projects that include the use of recycled tire products, including playground surfacing and picnic tables. The grants are funded by revenue collected through the tire excise tax, which is a $0.25/vehicle tire fee.

USD 311 receives grant from KDHE 

NEWTON, Kan. — Newton USD 373 Public Schools administration has completed a debrief with school resource officers regarding the misunderstanding surrounding an active shooter drill that occurred at Chisholm Middle School March 23. A routine drill at Chisholm Middle School was mistaken for the real thing which set off understandable panic with patrons and response from law enforcement.

The district says that from now on they will contact law enforcement and any other agency that might need knowledge of such information prior to conducting training with staff. The district says that this was the seventh such training done this year. In neither of the previous six had any problems occurred. The district says that in hindsight, this was erroneous. As a result, they will adjust protocol to reflect what they have learned and apologize for any strain this has caused in our school and community.&nbsp;

In closing, the district says they remain thankful that they have their partnership with Newton Police Department and praise their quick response to the situation. The families directly involved have been personally contacted by the schools.&nbsp;

Newton USD 373 releases statement on active shooter drill incident

The Board of Reno County Commissioners heard from Interfaith Housing and from the South Central Kansas Economic Development District on their housing proposals for the usage of American Rescue Plan Act funds on Tuesday.

Clint Nelson, Director of Housing Development with Interfaith Housing noted that they had meetings with each of the communities across the county and that their needs were as diverse as the communities themselves, but the general themes included an aging population that can no longer keep up the maintenance on their homes and a few severely blighted properties that need dealt with through tearing them down.

Allocations will be provided to each community and will cover all costs for marketing, community coordinator and project selections. Each community will be responsible for choosing what projects they are wanting to complete and the amount set per project not to exceed $15,000 per project unless approved by Interfaith’s General Contractor.

The full request by Interfaith was for $4,465,931, but Nelson said if it's necessary not to fund the full request to try to keep the rural community requests whole as much as possible.

Julia Westfahl and Marc Howell with SCKEDD outlined their proposal for an extension of their Housing Resurgence Program. The program is designed to turn blighted houses into attractive, energy efficient homes that will be sold to owner-occupied buyers. 

SCKEDD will provide $5,000 in down payment assistance to each buyer and also work to leverage local lenders and down payment assistance programs to help buyers avoid Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI). Their request was for $500,000.

The county commission appears to be willing to spend about $4 million on the housing piece, as of the close of Tuesday's meeting.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man has been formally charged with the rape of a woman following his arrest from an incident March 18.

Jacob Rodriguez Jr. is jailed on a bond of $50,000 facing a single count of rape. If convicted, Rodriguez faces anywhere from 12 to 54 years in prison depending on his criminal history. According to the complaint filed, Rodriguez forced himself upon a known acquaintance despite the victim's repeated requests to stop. He was arrested the following day.

Rodriguez’s case will now move to the status docket until a date for a preliminary hearing is set or other formal court action is taken.

Formal charges filed in rape case

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department announced that this year's Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action is April 1. The day encourages youth to bring awareness of tobacco usage in their community by hosting activities and events, and advocating to decision-makers.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States — 1,900 youth under 18 try their first cigarette each day. With 20% of high school students now vaping, many of whom were never smokers, new tobacco products are threatening to addict a new generation to nicotine.

The Resist Program, a statewide, youth-led initiative created to reduce youth tobacco use in Kansas, is also working to educate peers and the community about the harmful effects of tobacco use. The tobacco industry spends more than $68.3 million in marketing every year in Kansas alone. Reno Valley Middle School’s Resist Chapter members attended “Take Down Tobacco Day at the Capitol,” in Topeka in March and is one of three active Resist Chapters in Reno County. Their theme was “Taking Down Tobacco One Panther at a Time.”

The day encourages youth to bring awareness of tobacco usage in their community by hosting activities and events, and advocating to decision-makers.Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States — 1,900 youth under 18 try their first cigarette each day. With 20% of high school students now vaping, many of whom were never smokers, new tobacco products are threatening to addict a new generation to nicotine.The Resist Program, a statewide, youth-led initiative created to reduce youth tobacco use in Kansas, is also working to educate peers and the community about the harmful effects of tobacco use. The tobacco industry spends more than $68.3 million in marketing every year in Kansas alone. Reno Valley Middle School’s Resist Chapter members attended “Take Down Tobacco Day at the Capitol,” in Topeka in March and is one of three active Resist Chapters in Reno County. BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler City Council will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday evening.&nbsp;

The council will go over the consent agenda, which includes an appointment to the library board for a term to end in 2026 and budget reports.

Also Tuesday, the council will consider a road agreement for a compost burn site and hear the staff reports.&nbsp;

Tuesday's meeting of the Buhler City Council begins at 7 p.m. at the city offices at 219 N. Main.

Buhler City Council meets Tuesday

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Red Flag Warning for extreme grassland fire danger. This is a potentially dangerous situation, which is in effect from noon to 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Extreme Grassland Fire Danger is forecast, with winds from the south at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

Relative Humidity will drop as low as 10 to 15 percent.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended. This has the potential to be a higher end fire day for this area.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Please be aware of your surroundings and be ready to take action should a fire threaten your area.

Red Flag Warning in effect Tuesday, fire index at catastrophic levels

LEHIGH, Kan.&nbsp; —Authorities are investigating&nbsp; the death of a man in Marion County.

Marion County sheriff's deputies responded Sunday to an address in Lehigh that referenced a person unresponsive, according to a media release. Through their investigation, it was determined that an altercation occurred in McPherson County in the 1000 block of 21st Avene or about three miles south of Galva.

The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the altercation and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office notified them of the 32-year-old man who was found deceased.

No additional details were made available. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to&nbsp; contact the McPherson County Sheriff’s office.

Sheriff: Man found dead after altercation in McPherson Co.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Hutchinson man was injured in an accident just after 5:30a.m. Monday in Sedgwick County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Nissan 370Z driven by&nbsp; Jeremiah Wade Haynes, 20, El Dorado was westbound on Kansas 96 just east of 263rd Street West.

The Nissan rear-ended a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Nicholas Ramon Wagner, 56, Hutchinson, that&nbsp;was partly in the lane while pulling onto the outside shoulder. 

&nbsp;Due to the dark and the damage to the rear, the Trailblazer was not clearly visible. 

A 2006 Dodge Dakota driven by Enrique&nbsp;Reyes Hernandez, 51, Wichita, then also rear-ended the Trailblazer.&nbsp; A westbound 2008 Toyota Camry driven by Jody Christopher Wilgus, 38, Wichita,&nbsp; swerved through the accident scene and side swiped the Trailblazer.

EMS transported Wagner to&nbsp;Wesley Medical Center. The other drivers were not injured. All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

MOUNT HOPE — An accident on K-96 near Mount Hope caused a diversion in traffic for a short period Monday morning.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol dispatch, the accident was called in at 5:35 a.m. Monday. The westbound lanes were closed while the accident was investigated and traffic was diverted onto Andale Road.

As of 8:35 a.m. the road has reopened to traffic. Eyewitnesses say four vehicles were involved, details on the accident will be released later today by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Update: Hutchinson man injured after 4-vehicle K-96 crash

HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — Reno County Commissioner Ron Sellers is not running for re-election in 2022.

"I feel that I have served the community many, many years in many different ways," Sellers said. "HCC board for 16 years, City of Hutchinson for 8 years, and this past four years on the County Commission."

He plans to spend more of his time out of town in the coming years.

"Personally, as I'm getting older and as it seems the years go faster as they go, I want to travel more," Sellers said. "Even though we moved to two meetings a month, it's hard to be in town consistently for meetings."

Given that Sellers is giving up his seat and two new commissioners will also be elected to expand the board from three to five members, that means a majority of the commission will be up for election this year.

"I think voters are smart enough to vote for people that they feel will be overall good for the county, be stewards of their taxes, but yet keep the county being progressive," Sellers said. 

One person has filed for Sellers seat in District 1. Cris Corey has filed as a Republican candidate. Deputy Elections Clerk Jenna Fager said they have not yet had filings for the two new seats.

The advisory was necessary after a 12-inch water main at the base of the city’s water tower ruptured on Friday. The break interrupted water service to the entire community for about 20 minutes.

According to Haven Public Works, test samples taken Saturday showed no contamination in the system and they are waiting for the go ahead from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to lift the advisory.&nbsp;

The district is replacing 16 rooftop units from Sturgeon Plumbing and Air Conditioning for $121,880.

USD 309 to hold special meeting tonight

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson sales tax revenue for March fell from the previous year. According to the numbers released from the city, March sales tax numbers fell by 1.6% to $1,377,291. That’s a decrease of more than $23,000 from 2021.

The drop breaks a long trend of upward movement in sales tax revenue for the city. The drop also affects the ¼ cent sales tax and the special tax for the sports arena improvements. The sports arena revenue fell by more than $90,000 to $274,182. And the Cosmosphere, Strataca and the other entities funded by the ¼-cent tax also saw lower revenues.

Hutchinson sales tax revenue falls for March

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sunday, March 27 was the day Amtrak had set for restoring full service to all of its long distance routes including the Southwest Chief. Earlier this month Amtrak announced that it was not going to happen, although some long distance service has gone back to seven days per week. Most long distance trains had been reduced to five days of operation due to crew shortages.&nbsp;

Amtrak’s Marc Maglari says those issues remain. Amtrak did say they would release a summer operating schedule later but did not provide specifics. Amtrak is allowing ticket purchases for the&nbsp; Southwest Chief starting May 23rd but that does not mean they will operate as ticket holders for trains in April have found out.

Earlier Amtrak was asked to clarify the updated schedule and provided this statement.

“These restorations follow frequency reductions resulting from staffing and hiring shortages for skilled technical employees caused by the pandemic. We are working towards further frequency restorations on other impacted routes in the coming months as our hiring, training and staffing levels advance.”

Amtrak SW Chief stays on limited schedule for now

Kan. — A house fire in Hutchinson destroyed that structure Monday morning.

Fire crews were called at 5:13 a.m. to 315 Walker Street, where they found the home on fire, with fire showing from all sides. 

Firefighters initially had to attack the fire from outside. Once the fire was knocked down, as they put out the fire inside they found a large amount of debris and material in the structure. 

One dog was rescued from the fire in good condition. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

 </figure>The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Fire Weather Watch for extreme grassland fire danger, which is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening.Extreme Grassland Fire Danger is forecast. Winds will be from the south at&nbsp;20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with Relative Humidity as&nbsp;low as 15 percent.Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag warnings.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Applebee's locations across Kansas are offering a special menu as a fundraiser for Kansas Honor Flight on Tuesday.

The stores in Hutchinson, Wichita, Andover, Derby, Park City, McPherson, Newton, Salina, Great Bend, Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal and Hays are all participating.

If you go to one of those locations and order off the special fundraiser menu, that includes Three Cheese Chicken Penne, Fiesta Lime Chicken, Classic Bacon Cheeseburger, Chicken Tenders Platter or Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad, 50% of the price will be donated to Kansas Honor Flight. 

The fundraiser is good all day long from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for dine in, take out or delivery.  Kansas Honor Flight will also have volunteers greeting at each restaurant during lunch and supper hours.
