Rock legends Great White and Quiet Riot will play Kansas State Fair

WICHITA —

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a High Wind Watch for Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening.

South winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are possible in Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Rice and Reno Counties.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Secure all loose outdoor items as high winds will have the ability to send them airborne.

Fasten loose objects or shelter objects in a safe location prior to the onset of winds.

There is also a Fire Weather Watch for Tuesday related to the wind, as well as relative humidity as low as 17 percent.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag warnings. A Red Flag Warning has already been issued for the tier of counties immediately to the west of Reno County for Tuesday.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — The Kansas board that licenses health care providers raised concerns Friday about a letter that a physician-legislator sent to doctors suggesting that they prescribe ivermectin and other medications that aren’t approved to treat the virus.

The Kansas Board of Healing Arts said that the “unprecedented” letter from Kansas Sen. Mark Steffen carried no legal or regulatory weight but has caused “confusion and concern” in the Kansas medical community, The Kansas City Star&nbsp;reports.

Steffen, who is an anesthesiologist, said that health care providers will be shielded from the board’s “interference” in the letter that he sent last week on Senate stationery. The Hutchinson Republican said previously that the board is investigating him.

In the letter, he cites the recent Senate passage of a measure that specifically authorizes doctors to prescribe ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, among other drugs, to treat COVID-19. But the proposal remains bogged down in negotiations with the House.

The board wrote in response that nothing in state or federal law prohibits the off-label prescribing of FDA approved drugs. But it said doctors are bound to follow the standard of care, which is determined by what a reasonable physician would do in a situation.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;A Hutchinson resident was arrested on a series of drug charges Saturday evening after striking a home in the city.

According to the Hutchinson Police bulletin, 27-year-old Majesty D. Wade was driving a vehicle that struck the residence at 131 East Sherman just after 7:45 p.m. 

Wade was arrested on charges of distributing oxycodone within 1000 feet of a school, use of a telecommunication device to arrange a drug transaction, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute, acquire drug proceeds, felony flee and elude, felony interference, tax stamp violation, possession of K2, possession of drug paraphernalia, leaving the scene of an accident with more than $1000 damage, reckless driving, and failure to provide proof of insurance.

The Reno County Health Department is conducting a Community Health Assessment this month.

"We need people to take the assessment," said DJ Gering with the Health Department. "It gets harder to do the assessment when we get a lot of refusals, because we have to select alternate addresses. Every time we select an alternate address, we're implementing some type of human intervention into the survey."

Gering said its important that the example represent the whole community.

"Females are more likely to take surveys more than men," Gering said. "Retired households are more likely to take surveys than unretired households. The more we have to select alternate addresses, the more likely we are to get these populations that are inclined to take a survey. It can skew the results. We have to keep that in mind when we look at them and before we make decisions."

The decisions, though, are about the aggregate, you don't need to be afraid of personally identifying information being out there from this survey.

"Our objective is to have at least 180 respondents out of the 210 households that were selected," said Elliott Koester with the Health Department. "With this information, we get a generalized concept of how the public perceives the community and the other types of questions we ask. With that information, that allows the Reno County Health Department, along with many of our community partners, both primary care and non primary care, to make better decisions to better the community."

The last assessment took place in 2019 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also, there will be three proclamations for Child Abuse Prevention Month, Week of the Young Child and Law Enforcement Memorial Week.

The commission will go over its consent agenda, which includes purchases for Reno/Kingman Joint Fire District 1 (Pretty Prairie) to purchase a new 2021 Ram 1500 from Allen Samuels and outfit that vehicle for a total cost not to exceed $40,000 and Public Works purchase of a 2022 Cab and Chassis with Bed from Rush Truck Centers, Park City, Kansas, for a cost of $146,021.26. along with acceptance of KDOT funds for the High Risk Rural Roads Signing Project and three planning cases.

Budget requests will also be on the agends for the Reno County Extension Office, Reno County Drug Court and Reno County 4-H Fair, along with Economic Development.

The annual Community Corrections and Juvenile Services grant applications will also be on the agenda, along with the regular County Administrator's Report and comments from commissioners.

The Board of County Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 12 in the Annex Conference Room at 125 West 1st in Hutchinson.

USD 313 Board to meet Tuesday

YODER, Kan. — Last year, the Haven USD 312 School District wanted to come up with something different for the Yoder Charter School. The school was preparing to renew its charter and felt it needed something different. The decision was to place an agricultural setting into the charter.&nbsp;

“They were up for redoing the charter and, in Kansas, there aren’t a lot of charter schools,” Program Director Becky King said. “Knowing the student body and what the community was looking like . . . and agriculture is such a big part of the community, they added that agriculture learning portion to their charter.”

While the students are getting a full-send push into the program, King says all other facets of the school remain in place.

“This school has always been a unique place of doing lots of project-based learning and so they simply added the agriculture project for it,” King said. “We haven’t taken away from any standards that are being taught. These students learn all of the same state standards.”

King says getting the program started and getting the chicks was harder than it sounds.

“I figured out that we weren’t going to be able to get chicks here in the mail,” King said. “So I drove to every Tractor Supply and Orscheln’s within 30 miles and bought all of their meat chickens.”&nbsp;

That meant keeping them in her garage until she could get them in the classroom. Students have chores each week to keep the chickens healthy and are assigned chores each week. They also learn the business side of the project and how they will use the funds from their year-end barbecue to keep the project moving forward. King says that the plan is to expand the program slowly and move into other areas of agriculture.

“Our hope is to add at least one new facet next year,” King says. “We will be raising chickens again. We are hoping, with multiple classes taking over the brain work and the research, to use our supplies to raise egg layers. And so there will be building a coop and getting the resources for that.”

The school would also like to expand into the crop facet of agriculture in the future as well.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) will once again host student signing day. This year's event is scheduled for Thursday, May 12.&nbsp;

“Signing day is an opportunity to recognize students that are entering into training programs . . . as well as our Hutchinson Community College training programs,” Director Travis Rebel said.

With the close connection to vocational programs at Hutchinson Community College this year, the event is moving from the HCTEA to the Stringer Fine Arts Center.

“The change this year to move it to the Stringer Fine Arts is to include students that are entering into career and technical education fields at Hutchinson Community College,” Rebel said. “So this year's signing day will be an expansion of what we’ve done in the past.”

The event is a continuation of the efforts by both the academy and the college to build up a workforce for area business and the medical field.

“We certainly feel a responsibility to help our area business and industry partners and help fill the needed workforce,” Rebel said. “We have an active advisory committee in the programs, we have interview days on campus, and we really work with our business partners to both support the needs of our students and the industries which we represent.”

Students will be recognized in the fields of automotive mechanics technology, automotive collision repair, machine technology, welding, and both CNA and CMA nursing programs. In addition to signing day, the event will include recognition of area sixth graders who are currently participating in the Chamber of Commerce Career Quest program.&nbsp;

Career and Technical Education Academy ready for signing day

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works announced Friday that starting Monday, work crews will be replacing the wiring to the traffic signal at the intersection of 4th and Adams.&nbsp;

The intersection will be an all-way stop from April 11th to the 13th while the upgrades are being made. The intersection will be powered down, lights bagged, and temporary stop signs will be placed along with flashing lights.&nbsp;

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works announced Friday that starting Monday, work crews will be replacing the wiring to the traffic signal at the intersection of 4th and Adams.&nbsp;The intersection will be an all-way stop from April 11th to the 13th while the upgrades are being made. Traffic signal at 4th and Adams to shut down Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Formal charges have been filed against a Hutchinson woman who was arrested in a major drug bust last week.&nbsp;

Chelsea Pope faces one count of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, conspiracy to distribute meth and six counts of using a communication device to commit a felony.&nbsp;

Pope was arrested after a large package was intercepted by the postal service in Wichita. After that, the postal service and the DEU coordinated the delivery and arrested Pope soon after. The package contained more than 10 pounds of meth.

Pope is being held on a bond of $500,000. Her case now goes on the status docket until a preliminary hearing is set or other court action is taken.

Formal charges filed in drug bust

YODER, Kan. — Twenty-four new law enforcement officers, including officers from Hutchinson, Haven and Newton, graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on April 8th at a ceremony held in the KLETC Integrity Auditorium. 

Deputy Charles Wheaton of the Edwards County Sheriff’s Office was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Chief Courtney Prewitt of the Garden City Police Department. Mike Satterlee, KLETC Senior Instructor of Police, was the Class Coordinator for the 291st Basic Training Class.

Steven Phillips of the Haven Police Department was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class’ “Top Shot”. Jesyka Boots from the Hutchinson Police Department and Jayden Banks from the Newton Police Department also graduated from the area.

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county, and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of the University of Kansas Lifelong &amp; Professional Education.

The graduates, who began their training in January 2022, represented multiple municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies from across Kansas.

KLETC graduates 291st Basic Training Class Friday

Kan. — 
The HutchCC Career Fair at the Sports Arena on Thursday was a great success.

"We had 550 job seekers," said DJ Chastain with HutchCC. "Students, community members, anybody from the surrounding area. They come from all over, basically. We had 153 employers represented there. The Sports Arena was basically full clear down the hallways and clear through the gym."

Feedback Chastain received was outstanding, though they haven't broken down the data yet.

"We usually average about 130 to 135 employers," Chastain said. "We had 153 and then we had a waiting list of about 15 left. We reevaluated the gym, as well and we think next year we can get 170 employers next."

Unlike other area job fairs, this one is free for everyone.

"How many people get jobs, that will be hard to convert right now, just because there's not someone that's going, this person took this job and then they reported back," Chastain said. "In the future, that's what we want."

The hope is to get more specific numbers as attendee surveys are counted over the next few days.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It started as a curiosity and a dream at the very start of the U.S. space program.&nbsp;

Patty Carey started the Hutchinson Planetarium in the chicken barn at the state fairgrounds. Now the Cosmosphere is preparing to celebrate its 60th year as one of the premier space museums in the world.&nbsp;

“It’s really amazing when you stop and think about it. The Cosmosphere started out 60 years ago in the poultry building on the fairgrounds,” Cosmosphere President Jim Remar said. "I hope Patty (Carey) is looking down and smiling with everything this wonderful organization has been able to accomplish.”

The museum has changed through the years and has survived many economic downturns, the pandemic and even scandal to stay at the top of its game. Remar says that stepping up the Cosmosphere's education reach has been key to its continued growth.

&nbsp;“We’ll always be the museum for space history and space exploration,” Remar said. “But a couple of years ago we decided that if we were going to be that proverbial dot on the wall, we wanted to be known and become the physical and virtual location for STEM education."&nbsp;

Remar says the virtual reach the Cosmosphere has developed over the past three years put the museum at the front of STEM education.

“I think we are,” Remar said. “I think we really in the last couple of years have been able to demonstrate and showcase that both here and virtually we are the go-to for STEM education.”

Over the years, the museum's collection of space artifacts has grown to impressive heights. From actual space-flown artifacts to a piece of cloth from the Wright brothers first flight, the museum is one of only two that has flown spacecraft from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs including the Apollo 13 capsule. The list of guests and supporters is just as impressive from the first Mercury and Apollo astronauts to the astronauts of the space shuttle and International Space Station along with the hundreds of engineers and flight controllers who made it all happen. 

As always, the Cosmosphere is never short of big celebrations and this birthday will be no different. The event is called the First and Last Steps and is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2. The list of honored guests will be impressive.

“We’ll have luminaries such as Charlie Duke, Gerry Griffin, Fred Haise, Steve Hawley, Gene Kranz, Jack Lousma, Harrison Schmitt, and Jeff Ashby, " Remar said. “And that will be a night to celebrate the history of the Cosmosphere.”

More information on tickets and a complete schedule of the event will be announced at a later date.

After averaging around 18,000 passengers before going to a limited schedule, the “Chief” saw ridership fall to 12,500 passengers in January and just 9,400 in February.

Amtrak dropped service on the “Chief” to five days per week when it could not find enough crews to man long-distance routes. Plans were to restore full service in late March, but officials then decided against that as staffing problems continued. Now the rail carrier says it will announce a summer schedule for the “Chief” at a later date.

While that date was not given, Amtrak is taking daily reservations starting Memorial Day weekend although that doesn’t necessarily mean trains will be running full-time again.

Ridership aboard SW Chief falls again in February

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson woman was arrested Wednesday evening on assault charges.

According to a release from Hutchinson police, just before 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, officers were sent to 406 East Bigger, where they found 46-year-old Angela L. Jones barricaded herself in the house after it was reported she was chasing a man outside.

The Emergency Response Team negotiated and then, after four hours with no success, used irritant gas to get Jones out.

Jones was arrested for&nbsp;(1) Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon, (2) Felony Interference, (3) Domestic Battery (4) Possession of stimulant, and (5) Possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Once checked by Reno County EMS and medically cleared, she was transported to the Reno County Correctional Facility.

WICHITA — The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Red Flag
Warning for extreme grassland fire danger, which is in effect
from noon to 8 p.m. Friday.


Extreme grassland fire danger is forecast.

Winds are sustained from the northwest 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. 

Relative Humidity will be as low as 18 percent. 

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly
  and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not
  recommended.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now, or will shortly. 

A combination of
strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures
can contribute to extreme fire behavior.&nbsp;

The Wichita office of the National Weather Service also says a Freeze Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 are expected in portions of central, south-central and southeast Kansas.

Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes outside pipes should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

The Kansas Department of Transportation will host a series of meetings to provide an update on the new funding that will be available for transportation under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.  

This will include an overview of additional funding available for highways, bridges and rural transit and the new electric vehicle charging infrastructure program. KDOT will preview some of the investment areas under consideration for new funding and seek input from stakeholders about what would be most helpful to communities. 

The content for all events is the same. Events will be held in Hays April 11, Kansas City April 13, Wichita April 14 and online April 27. KDOT to hold series of meetings on new infrastructure funding

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One man is in custody following a report of an armed subject in Hutchinson Thursday afternoon.&nbsp;

According to Lt. Levi Harris of the Hutchinson Police Department, authorities were called out just before 2 p.m. to the 4100 block of Vicksburg. Officers arrived and were able to take the subject into custody without incident.

No name was released and Harris says the investigation continues at this time. HPD says it will release more information later.

Hutchinson police take armed subject into custody

UPDATE: April 7 as of 2 p.m.&nbsp;—&nbsp;Campos has been bound over on all 12 counts following the preliminary hearing. Judge Joe McCarville found there was sufficient evidence to hold the 23-year-old over for trial.&nbsp;Campos is accused of using a knife against the victim, trying to drown her at the lake, attempting to set her on fire, and shooting at the vehicle she was trying to escape in. He also faces counts of kidnapping and aggravated battery charges.&nbsp;Campos will now face arraignment on May 2 in front of Judge Trish Rose.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Testimony is underway in the preliminary hearing for a Wichita man accused of kidnapping his girlfriend and two children in Wichita and an eventual shooting that happened in Reno County.

Kamden Campos is facing six counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of kidnapping, three counts of aggravated battery and two counts of criminal threat. The six counts of attempted murder and the single kidnapping carry sentences of up to 55 years in prison if Campos is convicted.&nbsp;

The victim took the stand this morning and was reluctant to answer questions from the state, often returning an answer of “I don't remember.” She did talk about the day they left her house to buy a gift for her sister. At that time an argument started and they ended up at Cheney Reservoir. The state then played a recording of the 911 call she made. At that time, she stated she didn’t want to hear it.

In the tape, you can hear her say that she was worried Campos would take his own life. She then screamed hysterically when she discovered her two-year-old child had been shot. She repeatedly asked 911 for her to be able to hang up and make another call, but 911 kept her on the line and tried to help her do first aid on the child. The victim broke down and cried on the stand as the tape played while Campos put his head down on the table and was visibly shaking as the events played out in court.

When asked by the prosecution again about various events including how her clothing was doused in gasoline and how she was injured with a knife, she continued to answer with "I don’t remember."&nbsp;

Under cross examination she testified to the defense that Campos would never hurt her or the girls and was high at the time the incident happened. She testified that she did not see Campos shoot at her, but did recall hearing multiple gunshots.&nbsp;

Testimony is expected to continue through the day in Reno County District Court.

StartUp Hutch announces Double Dare award winners

MARION COUNTY — Law enforcement and school district officials are investigating an alleged threat against schools in Marion County.

A phone call late Wednesday to law enforcement in the Kansas City area indicated that students were planning to bring guns to school in Marion County, according to Kansas Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Melissa Underwood. 

 Law enforcement shared details with Marion County law enforcement and school officials, who made the decision to cancel classes out of an abundance of caution. 

The KBI&nbsp; also contacted our partners at the KSDE Safe and Secure Schools Unit. We are continuing to monitor this situation.

According to the <a href="https://www.usd397.com/live-feed#2356895">USD 397 website</a>,&nbsp;the school district made the decision early Thursday to cancel school for the day.

The district also canceled all activities for Thursday.

USD 398 Peabody-Burns reported its&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usd398.net/live-feed#2357249">website</a>&nbsp;just after 8 a.m. that all activities for Thursday including Forensics at Solomon, baseball/softball at Hillsboro were canceled and there are no practices. The junior high track meet at Bennington was also canceled and there will be no junior high practices.

Marion-Florence <a href="https://www.usd408.com/">USD 408</a> and Hillsboro USD 410 also canceled classes, according to the school websites.

Authorities released no additional details on the alleged threat.

Schools in Marion County cancel classes after alleged threat

HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — Saturday will be a busy day for artists in Hutchinson, according to Jace Chambers with the Hutchinson Art Center.

"Each Saturday of April and May, we're going to be having an origami class in the mornings at 10 a.m.," said Jace Chambers with the museum. "That's continuing this Saturday, as well. That's going to be an opportunity for parents or guardians to attend with their kids and learn about this project together and take home some creation that they've made as a team. The teacher is just so emphatic about teaching people not only about the culture of origami and paper folding, but also the countries where those practices were born."

There's another learning experience for kids Saturday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

"We also have a little experience with a book reading and live illustration demo for the children's book Millie's Garden and the Great Carrot Mystery," Chambers said. "This book was illustrated by a Kansas artist, Kathleen Kuchar and it was written by Joyce Frey, two wonderful, creative and enthusiastic ladies about kids education and being playful as you learn and you experiment with creativity."

Then there's a chance for adults to let out their inner shutterbug Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m.

"We'll all be meeting up with our Dirty Hands Book Club with the Crow &amp; Co. bookstore," Chambers said. "We'll actually be meeting up at the bookstore. Our featured book this month has been a photography book, so we'll actually be going on a little photography walk, weather permitting."

The book is called Read This If You Want To Take Great Photographs by Henry Carroll and you don't have to have read the book to be part of the walk on Saturday.
