Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System has a spine and brain surgery specialist. His name is Thomas Frimpong.

"I have fellowship training in minimally invasive spine surgery," Frimpong said. "What that means is that I'm able to do surgery through small incisions, with less blood loss, less pain, less narcotic use and faster recovery, which essentially, which will essentially produce a better outcome, essentially keeping the case cosmetically much nicer for the patient."

Most of the time, Frimpong deals with the effects of aging and overuse of the back.

"By far, the most common is degenerative disease," Frimpong said. "That's wear and tear. Typically, you'll have a bone that is out growing pushing against the nerve or the spinal cord. That ultimately produces symptoms, such as pain, numbness, tingling and weakness and that's what usually leads the patients to come and seek treatment. Normally, we would try to use an operative treatment, such as physical therapy, epidural injections and whatnot. If that doesn't work, we resort to surgery as a last treatment option."

"A typical neurosurgeon would be in training at least seven years, six or seven years and then, in my case, you do a fellowship," Frimpong said. "That's an extra year and during all that time, you are working on the spine. Your initial years, you are watching, but as you move up the ladder, you end up doing more of the hands on stuff."

Frimpong's expertise includes removal of tumors of the brain and spine and navigation-guided spine fusion, along with placement of spinal stimulators and treatment of scoliosis, in addition to emergency work in cases of traumatic brain and spinal injury.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School held its annual awards assembly Wednesday at the Salthawk Activity Center. Among the many awards handed out was the Young American Award presented to Ainsley Trunkhill. The Young American Award is the oldest award at HHS, with this being its 90th award. The award was started by the Oswald family in the 1920s.&nbsp;

The Davis Award winners for 2022 are Ainsley Trunkhill and Zoey Shipley. Each will receive $6,000 per year for four years. The other four finalists were Melaina Goss, Konner Fleming, Kimberly Villanueva and Thaddaeus Blakley. Each will receive $4,000 per year for four years. This is the 69th year for the Davis Foundation scholarships. During that time, more than 200 students have received scholarships. When the first scholarships were awarded in the 1950s, the scholarships were $500 a year for four years.

This year's Ronn Roehm Education Scholarship winner is Jace Rimbey. The scholarship is in honor of long-time HHS principal Ronn Roehm.&nbsp;

The Leaders of Today and Tomorrow winners were Thaddaeus Blakley, Bostyn Castor, Dalton Estes, Stella Foster, Amelia Ontjes, Ben Patterson, Noah Raigosa, Ainsley Trunkhill and Nicholas Zizumbo.

HHS awards assembly held Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will take the first step in addressing the now-vacant city manager position at a special meeting on Tuesday.

The meeting comes after the city council denied a motion to extend the contract of City Manager Jeff Cantrell beyond May 15.&nbsp;

The lone item on the agenda is to go into executive session to discuss the matter and then return to the chambers. No word on what, if any action, will be taken at that time. Tuesday’s meeting begins at 2 p.m. at the Hutchinson city offices.

Hutchinson City Council to meet in special session Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Dillon Nature Center continues to look over its master plan. The Peer consult team visited the center April 14-16 to gather input from both staff and the public. The study is being done because of a shift in the age of the visitors to the center and how they use the facilities.

The team of Nature Center Professionals included three nature center directors who currently run centers in New Mexico, Tennessee and Utah, and one retired director from Missouri.&nbsp;

The group also toured the grounds and facilities and talked about the various programs offered by the nature center. The team also spent several hours meeting with stakeholders, including: Staff from Hutch Rec, Dillon Nature Center, and City Parks &amp; Facilities; DNC Foundation members; as well as volunteers, partners and donors.

The group presented the strengths and some things that the center could improve upon. The biggest strength for the nature center is that it is loved by the community and has a very strong foundation of supporters. Some of the drawbacks presented by the group were some of the signage at the facility and coming up with a way to better inform the public about its mission and service to the area.

A written report is expected in the next week or two. It will be made available to the public.

Dillon Nature Center looks over assessment from The Peer Group

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — The Pretty Prairie USD 311 School Board will hold a work session this evening to further discuss a potential bond issue for the district.&nbsp;

The district has been working on a bond issue for the past year and has hired a construction management at risk contractor and architect for the project. 

According to Superintendent Ashley Anderson, the meeting will go over several potential packages that could be presented to the public. They include everything from overall maintenance needs for the district to a new gymnasium.&nbsp;

Once those packages are put together, the district will send out a survey to patrons asking them what they would be in favor of and numbers on what it would cost property owners.

If all goes as planned, the district will put the bond proposal before voters in August. Tonight's meeting is open to the public and begins at 8 p.m. at the middle school auditorium.

Pretty Prairie school board to hold bond issue work session

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 will name its Construction Manager At Risk for the upcoming $10.5 million bond project on Monday.

"We're hoping to identify which construction company that will be and then start moving forward with the selection of an architect," said superintendent Curtis Nightingale. "They'll help us start doing renderings and those types of things."

The CMAR process helps keep a bond project on time and on budget.

"Basically, we tell them a maximum amount of money that we're comfortable attempting to go to the community with," Nightingale said. They basically show us what all will fit in that basket."

The goal is to improve what the district has, not to build new, and capital outlay is being used for other purposes.

"Right now, we're spending a lot of time, kind of looking at our capital outlay and trying to take care of a lot of the deferred maintenance that's taken place over the last several years," Nightingale said. "Trying to get things like the rooftop units and some of that stuff taken care of, outside of a bond, and just being good stewards of the money available to us."

The Nickerson USD 309 school board will meet Monday at 7 p.m. at the district offices.

All of the items for sale come from the old Dillon Living Center and include furniture, file cabinets, mini fridges and microwave ovens, a piano and many other items.&nbsp;

Local high schools will be involved with some of the proceeds going to them for their service.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The sale runs from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. What does not sell will be given away after 4 p.m.

HRMC to host yard sale


HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department will be holding a bicycle rodeo as part of Third Thursday May 19.

Harley's will do complimentary bicycle checks and give away 50 helmets to kids who attend.

The bicycle rodeo will be at Avenue C and Main in the parking lot.

The Hutchinson Fire Department and the Reno County Health Department are assisting with the event.

Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department will be holding a bicycle rodeo as part of Third Thursday May 19.Harley's will do complimentary bicycle checks and give away 50 helmets to kids who attend.The bicycle rodeo will be at Avenue C and Main in the parking lot.The Hutchinson Fire Department and the Reno County Health Department are assisting with the event.

Bicycle rodeo coming up May 19

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The failure of families who qualify for free and reduced lunch to fill out the paperwork in Buhler USD 313 had a significant impact on their budget this year.

"Through our audit we just got recently back, we lost over $100,000," said USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman. "That $100,000 has to be absorbed somewhere, because we kept our staff and we kept our opportunities for our students, but that money wasn't there this year."

Kansas uses the number of students eligible for free (but not reduced-price) lunch to determine the amount of funding school districts receive to provide for services to at-risk students.

"We're hoping to recapture some of that money next year, when families have to fill that form out," Couchman said. "It is part of our enrollment process, so we ask that everybody takes a look at that and fills that out. It will help us. We'll be talking about that, and I think every school district will be talking about it from now until August, in hopes that we hit one more person."

Eligibility for free and reduced-price meals is based in part on the incomes of families at various percentages of the poverty rate.

Hutchinson Community College graduation is Friday

MCPHERSON, Kan. — As the McPherson County Clerk's office prepares to canvas votes on the Inman USD 448 bond election, advance voting is underway dealing with the McPherson USD 418 school district.

Advance voting got underway Tuesday for the recall of three USD 418 board members. The three board members up for recall are Ann Elliott, Emily Greer and Jeff Johnson.&nbsp;

The petition in the recall effort states that board members violated open meeting laws by creating a quorum outside of official board meetings. It also says the board members failed to maintain healthy safe places for students to learn and had a total lack of transparency, creating a lack of trust among patrons of the district. That includes the failure of the recent bond campaign.

The petition also mentions the district's handling of the mask mandate, which resulted in student isolation, segregation and divisions, creating a threatening and abusive environment for teachers and students.&nbsp;

The recall vote will take place in a special vote Tuesday, May 24.

Advance voting in USD 418 recall underway

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The United Methodist Health Ministry Fund of Hutchinson announced that Russell Child Development Center (RCDC) of Garden City was awarded the Janet Sevier Gilbreath Special Project Recognition Award at a celebration in Hutchinson Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The annual award, named in honor of the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund’s first chairperson, is given to one funded project each year best exemplifying the Fund’s vision of Christian health ministry and demonstrating scale, results, operational excellence and social justice.

Russell Child Development Center was honored for its participation in the Kansas Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) Initiative Grant, supporting implementation of an evidence-based home visiting model to build attachment and mitigate the effects of toxic stress in young children.&nbsp;&nbsp;

RCDC was also the first to rethink its strategy to serve families during the pandemic. RCDC became the first in the country to hold sessions via an online platform.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Also, Rainbows United of Wichita was recognized as the 2020 recipient of the Janet Sevier Gilbreath Special Project Recognition Award.

Deanna Berry, former executive director of RCDC, was honored as the 2020 Kim Moore Visionary Leadership Award winner.

Garden City childhood development center honored

Fair Food and Tunes is back at the Fairgrounds, Sat. June 25, starting at 11 a.m.

"That will be at People's Bank and Trust Arena," said Kansas State Fair general manager Bryan Schulz. "That's where we're going to have all the entertainment."

The all-day event will feature your favorite Fair foods and rides on the Big Slide, as well.

Ten bands, announced Wednesday, will perform in a semi-final battle of the bands during Fair Food and Tunes.

After judging and scoring in the semi-final round, the top 5 bands will be announced that evening. 

"Those five will then go for the opening night," Schulz said. "Then the top two will have the ability to open up for two of our national acts. It's kind of a really cool thing, to kind of showcase. During our June event, each one of the bands will have about 40 to 45 minutes to perform."

The KGFA increased its total amount of annual financial aid by $2,000 and awarded nearly $30,000 in total.&nbsp;

The scholarship committee, composed of KGFA’s membership, received more than 150 applications and granted the 19 awards based on merit and equitable geographic locations throughout the state.

Students must be a graduating Kansas high school senior, with excellent academic credentials who are planning to attend any Kansas four-year university, community college or technical school.

Adams wins KGFA scholarship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two people arrested in a drug distribution case on Tuesday.

Hutchinson Police took 44-year-old Jason Phiilps into custody on suspicion of possession of meth with intent to distribute, possession of meth, marijuana and drug paraphernalia and felony interference with law enforcement. Also arrested was Natasha Groves for drug possession and felony interference with law enforcement. Both were arrested at their residence around 2:30 Tuesday morning.

Phillips is being held on a bond of $27,500 while bond for Groves is $7,000. Formal charges are expected to be filed early next week.

Two Hutchinson residents arrested for drug distribution

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two outstanding Hutchinson Community College students were recognized as the 2022 Young Kansan Award winners at a ceremony on campus on April 27. The students will also be honored during the College’s commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 6.

Kaitlyn Seiwert (Murdock) and Andrew Bergmeier (Hutchinson) were selected from a field of students nominated for the honor. The Young Kansan award recognizes the outstanding male and female graduate each year at Hutchinson Community College, and is chosen by a vote of the faculty and administration at the college. Each winner received a plaque and a cash honorarium in recognition of their achievements.

Seiwert is from Murdock and attended Kingman High School. She is graduating with an Associate of Science degree. During her time at HutchCC, she was the editor of the Dragon’s Tale Magazine and was selected to represent Student Publications in the 2022 Winter Homecoming Court.&nbsp;

Bergmeier is from Hutchinson and is a graduate of Trinity Catholic High School. He will be graduating with an Associate of Science degree. During his time at HutchCC, he has served as an Ambassador in the Admissions department, has been a Leadership Scholar, worked in the Athletic department and has been involved with the Ping Pong Club.&nbsp;

HutchCC names Young Kansan Award winners

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Animal Shelter is holding an event at the Eagle Media studios this weekend.

"We set up dogs that are available for adoption," said Michaela Schommer with the shelter. "Our adoption prices for that day are half of our normal cost. All of our dogs come spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, up to date on their rabies."

Before you come to the event on Saturday, be sure your lifestyle is ready for a new pet.

"It takes people to research and know what they are taking on before they do," Schommer said. "Everybody loves dogs and everyone assumes that they are easier than children and, to be honest, they are about the same effort."

There's also often a difference between a child's desire to have a pet and their willingness to care for it.

"Parents need to do research first," Schommer said. "Make sure that they understand crate training is the best form of potty training and protecting the dog while they are not home. Bring the whole family to meet with the animal to make sure that, maybe your oldest son and daughter are great with this dog, but your three year old is terrified of it. Make sure everybody gets to meet the animal. Then, my last huge key piece of advice would be, parents especially need to understand that they ultimately are responsible for the pet and while you can use it as a teaching tool to give your children responsibility and learn responsibility and learn how to give compassionate care for another living being, an eight year old cannot take on that full responsibility."

Event organizers are also accepting donations for the Animal Shelter, monetary, food and pet toys from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the south lawn at 8th and Main in Hutchinson.

The Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month is Graber Elementary kindergarten teacher Kelly Curry. How far her students have to come when they get to her class is often about whether school is new to them or not.

"It depends on if they've been to preschool or not," Curry said. "They've learned how to play and get along and respect each other and build relationships."

Curry has felt a calling to teach since she was a little girl.

"I knew in second grade that I wanted to teach kindergarten, that I wanted to make it more fun," Curry said. "I don't do the skill and drill type things. I try to incorporate the music and songs and art and theatre and things like that, to make it more fun."

Curry has taught in the district since 1984 and has only taught kindergarten and second grade.

"I do love to watch them just bloom and grow and just learn how to get along," Curry said. "Just love each other and play and just become good humans."

Curry is a Graber alum, and she tries to incorporating a love of reading along with the arts in her classes.

Teacher of the Month: Curry tries to make it 'more fun'

The City of Hutchinson wants to ensure that membership on its boards and commissions is more diverse.

"Hutchinson has zero women on its planning commission, zero," said Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho. "The planning commission is arguably the most powerful city commission. It has an outsized influence on how our community looks and feels. Planning commissions provide crucial community development direction for recommendations on zoning, subdivision regulations and other planning guidelines. Women's voices are needed in these decisions. I also want to point out that the reason Sara and I are on city council is because, you know the first thing we needed to do? We needed to know that there was an opening, so that we could file for election. That's my point. I want to point out that this is a larger problem. This is not confined to Hutchinson."

Piros de Carvalho doesn't believe the omission of women is intentional, but she believes they need to know positions are there in time to apply.

"I'm not arguing for quotas, which is what I always get accused of when I bring this up," Piros de Carvalho said. "It's not a quota thing. I'm not trying to force men to serve on boards that traditionally have a majority of women or force women to apply for power boards if they don't want to serve. We should pick the best person for the opening. What I'm asking from the council is that you join me in providing direction to staff to make commission appointment outreach a priority."

Human Relations Director Dave Sotelo told the council he's working on policy to change that.

"I think the most altering policy that I am hoping to recommend to council is, currently, if you look at all of our boards and commissions, the appointment date for boards and commissions is all over the map," Sotelo said. "Actually, this is from Ryan from planning who suggested the brilliant idea of making that process uniform."

The City of Hutchinson wants to ensure that membership on its boards and commissions is more diverse."Hutchinson has zero women on its planning commission, zero," said Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho. "The planning commission is arguably the most powerful city commission. It has an outsized influence on how our community looks and feels. Planning commissions provide crucial community development direction for recommendations on zoning, subdivision regulations and other planning guidelines. Women's voices are needed in these decisions. I also want to point out that the reason Sara and I are on city council is because, you know the first thing we needed to do? We needed to know that there was an opening, so that we could file for election. That's my point. I want to point out that this is a larger problem. This is not confined to Hutchinson."Piros de Carvalho doesn't believe the omission of women is intentional, but she believes they need to know positions are there in time to apply."I'm not arguing for quotas, which is what I always get accused of when I bring this up," Piros de Carvalho said. "It's not a quota thing. I'm not trying to force men to serve on boards that traditionally have a majority of women or force women to apply for power boards if they don't want to serve. We should pick the best person for the opening. What I'm asking from the council is that you join me in providing direction to staff to make commission appointment outreach a priority."Human Relations Director Dave Sotelo told the council he's working on policy to change that."I think the most altering policy that I am hoping to recommend to council is, currently, if you look at all of our boards and commissions, the appointment date for boards and commissions is all over the map," Sotelo said. For Economic Injury Disaster Loans, the deadline is January 23, 2023.&nbsp;

Low-interest federal disaster loans are now available to Kansas businesses, nonprofit organizations, renters, and residents as a result of the Cottonwood Complex Fire that occurred&nbsp;in March 5-16, 2022.

The Agency Declaration covers Reno County&nbsp;and the contiguous Kansas counties of: Harvey, Kingman, McPherson, Pratt, Rice, Sedgwick &amp; Stafford.

People are encouraged to complete the SBA application even if they are not sure if they need it yet.&nbsp; If approved the loan becomes an option.

SBA Disaster Loan center closing Friday

Since the Hutchinson City Council chose not to renew City Manager Jeff Cantrell's contract, they have a lot of work to do in a short time to get a temporary replacement in place.

"We did identify some potential interim candidates," said Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho. "I'll be reaching out to those individuals. We are meeting again in executive session next Tuesday at 2 p.m. So, we'll discuss any candidates and hope to have a contract for that person by the next city council meeting on the 17th."

Cantrell's contract will be up before that meeting happens.

"We'll also be walking through with the HR director some potential scenarios for an executive search, which firm we want to utilize for that," Piros de Carvalho said. "We want to move swiftly."

Cities in Kansas generally have to have their budgets filed in August.

"We have some incredibly important business to do in the interim," Piros de Carvalho said. "The budgeting process typically begins around mid-May. Department heads get their budget requests in by May 11. We need to start having study sessions on the budget pretty much immediately."

This year could be a difficult budget year as costs for goods continue to be impacted by inflation and there are several potential large expenditures like the Woodie Seat Freeway that haven't had final decisions made.

According to unofficial numbers, the question is currently within two votes 377 yes to 379 no, but the eligibility of provisional ballots must still be determined.&nbsp;

The proposed $5 million bond would pay for improvements to&nbsp;facilities for football/track and field, baseball and softball and improve site drainage along with improvements to address handicap access (Americans with Disabilities Act) and other code compliance challenges.
