HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tyson continued a strong recovery from the pandemic as it released its second quarter earnings on Monday. The meat and poultry giant reported net income of $829 million compared with $476 million in 2021. Sales totaled $13.1 billion.

Sales volume for the prepared foods division decreased in the second quarter and first six months of fiscal 2022 due to lower production connected to a challenging labor and supply environment, uneven food service recovery and the divestiture of the company’s pet treats business. Operating income increased in the second quarter due to higher average sales prices, partially offset by the impacts of inflationary market conditions, including $210 million of increased raw materials and other input costs, increased supply chain costs and a challenging labor environment.&nbsp;

Tyson employs around 575 workers in its Hutchinson and South Hutchinson facilities.

Tyson reports strong 2nd quarter

HARVEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 2 p.m. Monday in Harvey County.

A maintenance vehicle turned over on East First Street between Oliver and Woodlawn roads, according to the Harvey County Sheriff's Department.&nbsp; The driver was found, pinned inside the truck in critical condition.&nbsp; Crews worked diligently for just over an hour to free the patient, cutting away parts of the cab and using hydraulic spreaders and rams to gain access, according to Newton Fire and EMS.

Eagle Med air-lifted the patient to Wesley Medical Center.

First Street was closed between Oliver and Woodlawn for several hours as maintenance crews worked to get the vehicle upright and cleaning up spilled diesel fuel.

The sheriff's department did not release the driver's name.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works announced that portions of East 23rd and Severance will be closed periodically for mill and overlay work. This includes the round-a-bout.

Lane closures can be expected on Severance between 23rd and 30th avenues and on 23rd from Severance east to Waldron. The lane closures will vary day-to-day depending on where the contractor is working.

Weather permitting, the project should be finished in about four weeks.

Street work starts at 23rd and Severance

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College announced that Jennifer Wiens, Professor of Chemistry, has been selected as the 2021-22 Dragon Educator of the Year.

Wiens was selected from nominees from all academic areas by the HutchCC Student Government Association (SGA) for the honor. The instructors are nominated by Hutchinson Community College students, and then complete a selection and personal interview process conducted by SGA. Wiens received her honor at the college’s commencement on May 6.

Wiens teaches General Chemistry lectures and labs as well as Ecology of Environmental Problems, along with serving as an academic advisor.

Wiens received her Bachelor of Science in Fisheries &amp; Wildlife Biology-Fisheries Biology from Kansas State University in 1994 and earned her Masters in Biology from Kansas State in 1996.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department announced that Capt. Justin Holzrichter has been promoted to Battalion Chief, and firefighters Tim Morris and Raymond Casanova have been promoted to the rank of Captain.

In addition, the department welcomed five new members. Matt Barr, Brant Graves, Nick Hood, Kolton Miller and Cale O’Hair were sworn in during the ceremony.

The promotions and swearing-in ceremonies were celebrated May 6.

HFD announces promotions

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Center of the Nation Model Railroad Expo is coming back to Hutchinson next month.

This year's event is set for Saturday, June 4, and Sunday, June 5, at the Pride of Kansas building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The event will feature more than 100 vendor tables, operating layouts and other activities. Tickets are $7 and children under 12 are free with an adult.&nbsp;

The expo is hosted by the Kansas Central Model Railroaders LLC group located in Hutchinson.

Center of the Nation Expo is June 4 and 5

INMAN — Inman voters have approved a $5 million athletic facilities bond issue, with the final numbers confirmed after the Monday canvass at the McPherson County courthouse. The bond passed by six votes, 387 Yes to 381 No.

According to the district, the $5 million bond will be paid over 15 years, with only the first three years of the bond resulting in a significant tax increase. After the other bond that is still on comes off in three years, taxes will drop back to a similar level to where they are currently.

For those three years, the increase on a $150,000 home will be $57.08 a year. The increase on a 160-acre piece of irrigated land will be $74.81 a year.

Those projections only figure in the current debt service and the addition that will be made through the new $5 million bond.

NICKERSON, Kan. — Several personnel matters are a part of tonight’s Nickerson USD 309 board meeting.

The board will go over several contracts for administrators including the contract for Superintendent Curtis Nightingale. The board will also go over several contracts for teachers and coaches.

Also this evening, the board will hire a Construction Management At Risk contractor for the district's bond proposal and go over bids for making roof repairs to the high school, the machine shop and Nickerson Elementary School at a cost of $134,013.&nbsp;

Tonight’s Nickerson USD 309 School Board meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Nickerson Elementary School at 400 N. Nickerson St. in Nickerson.

USD 309 School Board meets Monday evening

Warning: Today’s column is about politics and the upcoming election. Wait, don’t stop reading because what I have to say is especially important and will affect your farm and ranch for a long time to come. I know we are all tired of the constant fighting and mudslinging and what happens in D.C. and Topeka seem to be millions of miles away. I am here to tell you what happens in both cities hits close to home.

Over and over, I hear about how good people have turned off politics and just do not participate anymore. Friends, we have to change that. I am begging, no I am pleading, with all of you to get involved in this next election cycle and help make Kansas Farm Bureau’s voice stronger.

Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends (VOTE FBF) has a great record when it comes to endorsing candidates, but this is no time to get complacent. We must make our voice heard. VOTE FBF’s track record when it comes to endorsing candidates is so strong because we involve, or try to involve, every county and every member in the process. I know I sound like a broken record, but our strength is our grassroots.

This is the time of the year when VOTE FBF starts to make decisions on which candidates to endorse in both our federal and state elections. The very core of the process is the recommendations from each county. It is important, especially in state races, because you know your candidates, your voice and opinions carry great weight with the VOTE FBF board.

It’s true, you need to have at least donated $5to VOTE FBF, but that is a small price to have a say in who makes the rules and laws that affect our livelihoods. We need to make sure we are surfacing and supporting legislators who understand and back agriculture. The only way things will get better is if we are involved, and that has to start now.

First, familiarize yourself with the candidates in your area. Read their websites and go meet them. Find out who supports your way of life and who will represent your point of view in D.C. and Topeka. Then go to your county office, pay your $5 if you haven’t already and ask to be part of the process. I will bet you won’t be turned down.

I hope there will be deep, meaningful conversations about which candidates to back around those board tables. Most of all, however, I hope we have feedback from all 105 counties. I can’t emphasize how important the next two election cycles are to agriculture and rural Kansas. We must make sure we have a say in which candidates represent us.

Get informed and get involved because we need your input to ensure we endorse pragmatic leaders who understand agriculture and rural Kansas. Now is the time to get involved and make sure Kansas Farm Bureau and VOTE FBF continue to be the Voice of Agriculture in the years to come.

Insight: Endorsing Agriculture

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive with the Post Office is back this Saturday, May 14.

"We are so happy to be back having it this year," said Josh Estrella with the Postal Workers Union. "It's been a long two years without having our food drive. We're happy to get back at it this year."

There will not be bags in your mailbox this year, but they do plan on putting the reminder cards in.

"If it's in a sack, that makes it easiest for us to grab it and put it back in our mail trucks," Estrella said. "The food bank does like to have a variety of items, such as mac and cheese, canned vegetables, fruit, things like that. We just do ask that customers might want to check their expiration dates on items."

They can take monetary donations either cash in an envelope or a check as long as its clearly marked for the Reno County Food Bank.

"The last couple of years before COVID, we've been able to pick up around 30,000 pounds of food," Estrella said. "That is a lot of food."

Please put your food out near your mailbox sometime between now and Saturday so that they can pick it up and get it to the food bank as soon as possible.

Charges were officially filed last week in a rape and kidnapping case.

51-year-old Tyrone E. Carter has been charged with rape, aggravated indecent liberties with a child older than 14 and younger than 16 and aggravated kidnapping.

The complaint alleges that Carter had sex with the teen without her consent and while she was under the influence of a substance and that he held the victim against her will.

She told the court that Carter raped her twice, then drove her to Newton, where she was able to walk away and get help.

Because some of the details of the case are not yet clear, the crime has been charged with several potential alternatives, depending upon what set of facts the forensic evidence, once it's processed, will support.

Kan. — The American Red Cross reminds us that excessive heat causes more deaths than all other weather events.

Hot cars can be deadly. Never leave children or pets in your vehicle. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees.

Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.

If someone doesn’t have air conditioning, they should seek relief from the heat during the warmest part of the day in places such as schools, libraries, theaters and malls.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.

Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.

Take frequent breaks if working outdoors.

Don’t forget your pets! Check on animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat. Make sure they have plenty of cool water and shade. Animals can suffer heat stroke, a common problem for pets in the warmer weather. Some of the signs of heat stroke in your pet are:

Heavy panting and unable to calm down, even when lying down.

If you suspect your pet has heat stroke, take their temperature. If the temperature is above 105 degrees, cool the animal down. The easiest way to do this is by using the water hose. Stop cooling the animal when their temperature reaches 103 degrees.

Bring your pet to the veterinarian as soon as possible as heat stroke can lead to severe organ dysfunction and damage.

Red Cross gives heat safety tips

TOPEKA, Kan. – Kansas Grantmakers in Health, a collaborative network of the state’s six health care foundations, including the Hutchinson-based United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, awarded a $10,000 grant to Stafford County Economic Development to address food insecurity.

The grant was part of $25,000 in grants in memory of former Kansas Health Foundation CEO Steve Coen.

The grants will be made through the KGIH Opportunity Fund, which was established by the funders at the Topeka Community Foundation.

Stafford County Economic Development, a nonprofit organization, was instrumental in building a new grocery store in Coen’s hometown of St. John. The public-private partnership has helped the community maintain a local grocery store and improve the resiliency of the local food system.

During his years at the Kansas Health Foundation, Coen championed programs, initiatives and public education aimed at securing state and local policy change on child health and well-being, public health infrastructure, access to healthy foods and other critical health issues. He was a longtime member of KGIH, which collaborates on public policies, grants and projects with statewide reach and shared concerns.

Also receiving a grant in honor of Coen was Common Ground Producers and Growers in Wichita. They received $15,000.

Stafford County gets grant in memory of Steve Coen

OTTAWA COUNTY—A Hutchinson woman was injured in an accident just after 10 p.m. Sunday in Ottawa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Dodge Ram driven by Brian L.&nbsp; Bogard, Henryetta, Oklahoma, was northbound on U.S. 81 one half mile south of Kansas 18. 

The pickup lost the right rear tire. The tire crossed the northbound passing lane, median, and southbound passing lane and struck a southbound 2021 Chevy Blazer driven by 70-year-old Larry R. Wagner of Hutchinson.

EMS transported a passenger in the Chevy identified as 64-year-old Charlotte M. Wagner of Hutchinson to Salina Regional Medical Center. Bogard and Larry Wagner were not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

USD 313 school board meets Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Three USD 308 schools launched their Kansans Can Redesign School projects this week.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Middle School – 8, Morgan Elementary School, and Graber Elementary School kicked off their redesign with each school hosting a special launch presentation for staff and members of the Kansas State Department of Education to showcase the progress they have made throughout the redesign process.

The Kansans Can School Redesign Project is an initiative through KSDE that focuses on student empowerment and engagement based on individualized learning. USD 308 began the redesign process two years ago and several schools have already officially launched their projects.&nbsp;

"Redesign is a great opportunity to empower our teachers to be leaders in their schools. Our redesign teams have worked to gather input from all stakeholders, analyze data, prototype and make adjustments as needed and all of this work is centered around students' achievement,” Krystal Young, director of Special Programs and Redesign for USD 308, said.

The first school to launch this week was Hutchinson Middle School – 8, who has hosted several special events like their Student Summit and Bite of Reality with Heartland Credit Union, to involve students in the redesign process.

“This launch presentation is a culmination of over a year’s worth of work that we’ve done at HMS-8. It has been a whirlwind of activities – we’ve surveyed students, teachers, and community members – and we have assessed that data and built goals, and this is where it all comes together,” Principal of HMS-8 Michael Self said. “Launch is just the beginning, that’s the nature of redesign.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

This weekend marks a milestone for the Hutchinson Art Fair.

"It's our 60th Anniversary," said Barbara Withrow with the art fair. "We're always excited when the art fair is here, but this year especially. We've tried to do some things to make it even more special for all the people who love to come and shop."

It's an opportunity to help local artists and get something special for Mom or graduation or an upcoming wedding or any of those types of occasions. 

"There are going to be 46 artists, regional and local," Withrow said. "There will be live music. If you bring the kids with you, we will have free sack craft kits."

Whatever kind of art you enjoy, there will be some there for you. It's much more than just paintings and drawings.

"They will be displaying jewelry, pottery, there will be photography, metal decor and great metal yard art."

The event is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sunflower South building.

The Board of Reno County Commissioners will hear the annual update from Solid Waste as part of its agenda on Tuesday.

The commission will also hear about its health plan performance for 2021, and give final approval to its compensation policy.

The commission is also set to hear the Reno County Courthouse Space Renovation architect proposal and approve expenditures on two bridge projects, one on 69th Avenue and the other on Fairview Road.

The meeting of the Board of County Commissioners is Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Reno County annex.

County commission to meet Tuesday

HutchCC President Carter File said the Legislature cleaned up some issues in the The Kansas Promise Scholarship Act this session.

"They defined what aid really is," File said. "They've exempted any 529 money. It's no longer considered aid. It really wasn't ever intended to, but it wasn't clear, so they cleaned that up. Veterans who are using military aid, that does not count against...that does not count as aid when we're doing the formula, so they can receive both the Promise Act and their military benefit. Again, a great program, helping a lot of students."

The bill permits students to enroll on a part-time or full-time basis, but students must maintain satisfactory academic progress toward completion of the promise-eligible program.

"This is a real, kind of a technical higher education thing, but they moved from a program, which is a clearly defined set of courses, to fields of study," File said. "Rather than have to have all of the programs in a technical sense, you could take shorter courses and you could take different paths."

There are specific fields of study that are eligible for the last dollar scholarship.

"Advanced manufacturing, building trades, early childhood education, health care, information technology and security and then, fire science," said spokesperson Denny Stoecklein.

The legislature also extended the amount of time allowed to finish the program from 30 to 36 months.

File: Promise Act cleaned up this legislative session

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — After a work session Thursday, Pretty Prairie USD 311 is getting together potential packages of work to put into a bond issue to go on the ballot later this summer.

"What we're doing right now is kind of working with these four package ideas," Anderson said. "We're just going to do a survey and get them out to our community and kind of say, would you support this package, would you support that package, just trying to gauge where voters are at."

The information is being compiled today with the hope of getting the survey information out next week.

"We did two community meetings," Anderson said. "We've done two board work sessions to kind of respond to some of the feedback from community members in those open meetings."

If all goes as planned, the district will put the bond proposal before voters in August.

Surveys for Pretty Prairie school bond should go out next week

HARVEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a disturbance involving gunshots reported Thursday night in Newton.

Just after 9 p.m. Thursday, officers were dispatched for an active disturbance&nbsp;in the area of East 12th and Magnolia in Newton, according to a social media report from police.

While they were en route, several 911 calls reported multiple gunshots in the area. Officers arrived at a chaotic scene but were quickly able to determine no one was injured. Police searched two residences and found no victims or suspects.

After interviewing witnesses, officers identified two people involved in the disturbance and recovered a handgun and several spent casings. No arrests have been made.

Police: Disturbance in Newton involved gunshots

Economist Michael Austin believes there may be some future issues found in what on the surface seems like a positive sales tax report for the state.

"Even though we saw tax day had a better than expected gain, Kansas consumption, I saw, decelerated massively, suggesting that massive inflation might have blunted consumer confidence here in the free state."

Austin agrees with other conservative economists that the Fed raising rates is the right thing to do, but it may be too much and too late.

"The Federal Reserve needs to, of course, raise rates in a way that it discourages bad investments, but maintains productivity within consumers and businesses," Austin said. "Historically, that has been very hard to do. It is likely that we'll see another recession within the next one to two years."

The point of Austin's question is that Kansans are not buying like they used to even a few months ago.

"Year over year growth for Kansas purchases of sales taxable items was 18.4%," Austin said. "That included a roughly 8.5% inflation hike. Now, in this April report, sales are down to 4.8% growth. Not only is that a quarter of March's growth, but it's even smaller than March inflation. It means Kansans can't keep up with rising prices and now they're pulling back."

That also could mean times for tax policy in coming months and years won't be as flush as we have seen recently.
