UPDATE: Standoff ends peacefully

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — The Pretty Prairie USD 311 School Board were in consensus in bringing a $10.4 million facilities improvement bond issue before its patrons following a special meeting Monday night.&nbsp;

The board will meet again next Monday to officially approve the project scope and the resolution bringing the bond proposal to the public for a vote.

The proposal would include a list of needed maintenance and upkeep including new windows and doors, secure entrances and roof repairs and replacement on all district buildings. It also includes expanding the middle school gymnasium and turning it into the main competition facility. This would include a new lobby, concession stand, restrooms, locker rooms, and a weight room. The district says that the proposal would be more cost effective than renovating the current high school gym into a competition gym or building a new gym.

If all goes as planned the vote on the bond issue will be Tuesday, Sept. 6.

USD 311 School Board sets scope of bond proposal

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The process of selling the Obee School property is continuing forward with approval of the contract with HW Lochner to do the work to give to the FAA so that the portion of the building footprint that was technically built on airport property can be sold. 

"We don't get any further in this process until we pay Lochner and they perform their work," City Attorney Paul Brown said. "That's what this contract is about. Lochner's work will actually provide us with the legal description for that tract. Part of what they do is reform the boundary lines of the airport, because that has to be substantiated to the FAA."

The city's third of the required survey by HW Lochner is $4,916.66 and they have to pay that whether the FAA approves the sale or not. The buyer and Buhler USD 313 will each pay a third of the contract, too.

"The council has indicated a willingness to proceed with this transaction," Brown said. "We've had attempts before. Here's the contract. We're hopeful that we can accomplish it this time. It is still subject to FAA approval."

Any change in airport boundaries has to get that federal approval. Brown had to deal with it once before when the city had to move 4th because of a need for more space related to controls at the end of one of the runways.

"When you change that or alter that, then you have to go through this process again," Brown said. "It has to be approved by the FAA. It mainly involves just proving title to all the various tracts. Then I have to issue a title opinion that Lochner gets and then the FAA receives that. It's quite a process and that's why you use an engineering firm to help you with that who is familiar with dealing with the FAA."

The motion to go forward passed unanimously on Tuesday.

Airport boundary work that is part of Obee school sale approved Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — All eyes are on Cow Creek northwest of Hutchinson as persistent rain is starting to raise flood concerns.

A flood warning is in effect for Rice and Reno Counties from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. As of Tuesday morning, Cow Creek was running at 5.6 feet with flood stage at 9.5 feet. The creek is forecast to reach 10 feet Thursday evening. Flood stage is 9.5 feet. At this level the low water crossings on Wilson Road between 69th and 82nd floods along with other township roads in the area.&nbsp;

With more rain in the forecast, these numbers could change over the next 24 to 48 hours. Make sure you do not try to drive down township roads where flooding is possible, especially after dark. Never try to drive through flood covered roads.

Flood warning in effect for Cow Creek

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of South Hutchinson says more than three dozen homes have signed up to participate in the Citywide Garage Sale scheduled for this weekend.&nbsp;

Though the bulk of the action will occur on Saturday, some homes will start on Friday.

South Hutch citywide garage sale Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The HutchCC Board of Trustees will have its first reading of a draft of the Student Code of Conduct at its meeting Thursday.

According to meeting documents, the code will apply on College property, any College sponsored or sanctioned activities, and any off-campus behavior which reflects on the mission of the College. 

The changes include a clarification of an example of a passive, yet disruptive behavior. 

Also, there are several changes to remove his or her from policies regarding individuals and to replace those mentions with the pronoun their. 

There is also an inclusion of hoverboards in the policy regarding usage of devices like skateboards and scooters.

In addition, the language regarding campus disorder or student unrest is being clarified to allow for the President to designate a person to contact law enforcement, if that person sees a need for such contact, when the President is not on campus.

The board will also look at the document for disciplinary proceedings if the Code of Conduct is violated. That document has just a couple of minor changes, one to clarify that not representing the college is one potential course of action and another to clarify that appeals can be filed by mail.

The meeting Thursday starts at 7:00 p.m. in the Justice Theater in the Shears Technology Center at 1300 North Plum in Hutchinson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Alzheimer's Association is holding an event in Hutchinson this week.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for the entire community to come together to voice their concerns," said spokesperson Juliette Bradley. "What it really helps us do is open the door. You can be our eyes. From the Alzheimer's Association's perspective, we want to know, how are we doing in your community? Are we reaching you? What would you like to see?"

The event is Friday, June 10th from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Clayworks at 1125 North Main.

"I think we do a pretty good job, but we need to know from the individuals that are actually living this, what might help them." Bradley said. "Do they have access to the support groups that they need? Would they like more virtual support groups? Is there anything else that they can talk to us about? Are they able to get access to a neurologist, is there anything we can do to help with that? There's lots of conversation. This is a complete open forum."

Lunch will be provided, so you need to register in advance so they know how much food they need.

"If nothing else, come to this forum to hear other people," Bradley said. "Sometimes, when you are new in a situation like this, maybe you even think you personally have some memory cognition issues, let's just go and listen to other people. Sometimes being around others who are in similar situations just gives you a comfort right there. Then you can learn about the free resources from the Alzheimer's Association. Whether it is a support group or an education class, all of the stuff that we have online at alz.org. This is a great opportunity to come and learn, if nothing else."

Alzheimer's Association holding Hutchinson event Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Katie Broker with the Reno County Museum said the Museum is getting ready to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Hutchinson by looking back at another big celebration.

"We have published a book, it's for the 150th," Broker said. "It is a picture book of the powwow. I think it was the 75th. We have all of those pictures of Main Street full of people. There's a man on a horse on top of the Wiley Building. They are just so cool to see. There are covered wagons going down Main Street, old cars, beautiful, beautiful pictures, and I'm sure a lot of families have connections to those photos. We'll have those books available very soon."

The printing is going on right now. It will be done next month. Also new at the Museum is a new addition to their play area.

"BNSF Railroad has given us a grant, in 2021, to do an educational project for kids," Broker said. "We've completed it. It's done now. We're so excited about it. There is a large scale BNSF train replica. It's built out of wood. It's a play structure for kids, that we have put in the kids area. We actually had to take out the boat. We know that was a fan favorite, but we're replacing it with a lot of really cool stuff. So far, the kids have been just ecstatic about the train. We also have the combine cab that was a recent addition, as well. We're making some other changes with the help of the community foundation. We just received the Fund for Reno County grant."

Broker said the kids area hadn't been updated in 30 years, so they are excited about giving it more of a Reno County feel. Broker also said April's Appraisal Fair was a huge success.

"This being our first fundraiser in several years, we ended up with over $1000," Broker said. "That was just incredible to see that had such a good kickoff and we had great community support for this."

The Reno County Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Museum is closed Sunday and Monday. For more information, go to <a href="http://renocomuseum.org">renocomuseum.org</a>.

Reno County Museum with lots going on this summer

Hospice and Homecare of Reno County is looking for volunteers on Flag Day, June 14 to drive their own cars in a reverse parade of sorts where people make a drive by visit to local nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Parade participants will be meeting in the parking lot at the Trade Center located at 1600 N. Lorraine in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

If you are available and interested in participating, please plan to arrive by 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday the 14th at the Trade Center. You can decorate your vehicle, play music, dress up, or whatever suits your personality. 

All cars will need to be in line to leave by 9:45 a.m. Two groups will leave at 10 a.m. One group will make stops in Hutch, the second group will make stops in Hutch &amp; South Hutch.

Weather permitting, the gliders will be launched at noon each day of the contest. They will then set off on a cross-country triangle course that may exceed 100 miles, according to a KSA news release.

The contest will feature 24 pilots, including eight national gliding champions and world gliding champion Sarah Arnold. The gliders flying this race are fixed-wing aircraft with no engines and wingspans approaching 70 feet. They rely solely on air currents to stay aloft. A powered aircraft will tow most of the gliders into the air.

The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Soaring competition coming to Yoder

Kan. — 
The 80th Fiesta at Our Lady of Guadalupe in South Hutchinson is this weekend.

"It's one of our biggest fundraisers for the church," said committee chair Tom Beier. "It's also a time for the community to get together and have a little bit of camaraderie and enjoy each other's company."

There will be bands there throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, along with a poker tournament, a hot rod resurrection car show, over 150 items on silent auction and the OLG Raffle on Sunday with a top prize of $5000 in cash.

"Suggested donation is $2," Beier said. "I think there are eleven different prizes to win."

That includes the cash, a PlayStation 5, a grill, a night to stay and play at the casino, a chainsaw, a blower, a trimmer, four truck tires, and more. 

Father Eric Weldon notes that the fundraiser helps considerably with the church's building.

"This fundraiser is always about, what can we do to help out our savings to take care of some needed maintenance, maybe, in the church," Weldon said. "There's always roofs, there's always air conditioning, there's always siding, there's always things like that. There's also, some help with Catholic education, as well."

"It's also a time for the community to get together and have a little bit of camaraderie and enjoy each other's company."There will be bands there throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, along with a poker tournament, a hot rod resurrection car show, over 150 items on silent auction and the OLG Raffle on Sunday with a top prize of $5000 in cash."Suggested donation is $2," Beier said. "I think there are eleven different prizes to win."That includes the cash, a PlayStation 5, a grill, a night to stay and play at the casino, a chainsaw, a blower, a trimmer, four truck tires, and more. Father Eric Weldon notes that the fundraiser helps considerably with the church's building."This fundraiser is always about, what can we do to help out our savings to take care of some needed maintenance, maybe, in the church," Weldon said. SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson City Council will take action on appointing a new city attorney during tonight’s agenda session. Current attorney Stan Juhnke is resigning. The mayoral appointment is Mark Tremaine.&nbsp; Tremaine currently performs similar duties for the City of Sterling, and served as the city attorney for the City of Lyons.&nbsp;

The council will also discuss changing the dates of several meetings due to scheduling conflicts. The council normally meets on Wednesdays when there are Monday holidays. If approved, those meetings would be held on Tuesdays.&nbsp;

The district has been working on a bond issue for the past year. They hope to have the final scope of the project and official wording in place to act on at this meeting. The district recently sent out a survey to its patrons asking what they want to see in a bond project. Responses ranged from maintenance needs to major renovations to existing buildings. Such proposals could run anywhere from $4 million to nearly $10 million depending on what the board decides to bring before the voters. The district is hoping to bring the matter up for a vote in August.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the middle school auditorium.

Bond issue discussed during tonight's USD 311 meeting

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Siemens Gamesa (SG) facility in Hutchinson continues to fill out orders in preparation for its shutdown next month.

According to company spokesperson Andrew Luther, the nacelle plant is fulfilling orders that are already in place and will then begin shutting down the plant throughout the month of July. Luther says that the logistical and parts supply problems that plagued the company earlier in the year are not a problem in getting the existing orders finished.

He also said that a new US energy policy and how wind will be a part of that new policy will be a determining factor in when the Hutchinson plant opens again.

SG announced last month that they were closing the Hutchinson and Fort Madison, Iowa plants due to slow downs caused by both the economy and a legal case brought on by a competitor that shut down production.

Closing the Hutchinson plant will put 92 employees out of work.&nbsp;

WICHITA, Kan. — After much anticipation, the headliner for The Dam Jam was recently announced. 

Via Facebook Live, organizers announced the addition of Country Music Legend David Lee Murphy.

A Thousand Horses, two-time ACM nominated band featuring Zach Brown, will join David Lee Murphy.

Jenna Paulette, one of CMT's Next Women of Country for 2022, will be in the lineup. The Texas native grew up on a cattle ranch in Oklahoma and honed her skills by singing in church.&nbsp;

The Morgan Wilk Band: Featured in Cannes Film Festival sensation Red Rocket, Morgan Wilk is the midday personality on <a href="https://www.country1029.com/page/morgan-wilk-middays-10am-3pm">Hutchinson's Country Station, Country 102.9</a>. Her music has been featured on TV and in film. She has shared the stage with the likes of&nbsp;Bryan White, Pam Tillis, Tanya Tucker and Richie McDonald.

Specializing in honky-tonk country, original and covered, Callahan Band will be part of the festival. The toe-tapping country band has played venues all over Kansas.&nbsp;

The talent competition finals will feature Chase &amp; Co. vs. Classic Cowboys.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson Garden Tour returns this Saturday.

"Our last tour was in 2019," said Dee Bisbee, garden tour chair. "That seems like it was about 10 years ago, really, but we're back and we're excited. We have a great group of gardens that will be on the tour this year. Four country gardens and one city garden, along with our garden at the Hutchinson Community College."

The first event connected with the garden tour is available to those who purchase advance tickets and it is a guided bird walk at one of the locations. Those advance tickets are available for $8 between now and June 9 at the following locations:

Bornholdt Plantland, 1508 West 4th Street

Prairie Hills Nursery, 2999 East 30th Avenue

Stutzman’s in Pleasantview and at 925 East 30th Street

Reno County Extension Office, 2 West 10th, South Hutchinson

Tickets will also be available at each garden for $10.00 the day of the tour, with children 12 and under free and there will be help for gardeners at the garden at HutchCC.

"From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Pam Paulsen, who is our Reno County horticulture agent, she will be there doing Garden Guru," Bisbee said. "If you have a problem in your garden, bring a sample in a Ziploc bag, take a picture, she will try and identify and figure out what the problem is for you."

Garden tour proceeds support the Master Gardeners educational programs at the demonstration gardens at HutchCC, along with the Reno County Extension Office, the Hutchinson YMCA and the Garden for Good at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility-East Unit.

"If you need us to do a lecture for you or an educational moment, contact the Reno County Extension Office," Bisbee said. "They will get back to you with some type of information. We've had such a call for things, for people to have us, that we almost don't have enough people to do it."

Gardening really took off as a hobby during the pandemic, and Bisbee's hope is to get some of those gardeners that started in earnest then to come out and get some tips to help them during Saturday's event.

2022 Master Gardeners Summer Garden Tour is Saturday

It’s easy to forget today that agriculture is the foundation of civilization. It’s the process that ended our ceaseless following of food and allowed us to settle into cities. What followed, over the past several millennia is the world we inhabit today. In short, farming and ranching are the essential drivers of the manufacturing- or service-based economy we all enjoy.

In the United States, where about 1 in 50 people grow the crops and livestock that end up on our dinner plates, it’s easy to overlook the importance of agriculture. Through our industriousness and separation of labor, we’ve made it easy for generations of citizens to imagine food only comes from the grocery store or the double-doors to a restaurant kitchen.

All of that’s true, but it’s also slightly misleading. Fewer than 2 percent of the U.S. population is directly involved in growing the raw inputs—food, fuel, fiber—our nation consumes. But the crops and livestock they produce go on to support the jobs of nearly 1 in 3 Americans, illustrating just how long the road is from farm to fork.

While those numbers are impressive, they’re not exactly representative. After all, we’re talking about the wealthiest country in the world some 12,000 years after humans first began bending the will of nature to their own ends by domesticating plants and animals.

But it wasn’t until within the last century that we as species went from accidental agriculturalists to the purposeful planners we are today. Norman Borlaug proved it was possible to dramatically increase crop yields by switching from low-yield crops to high-yield varieties, which had a two-fold effect on the world’s economy.

First, increasing the productivity of land meant farmers had more money to invest in labor-saving machinery further boosting their efficiency. Second, while machines did indeed replace many farm workers, the displaced workers were able to find higher-paying manufacturing or service jobs in towns or cities.

In a University of Chicago paper, authors Gollin, Hansen and Wingender, speculate that without this transformation, the gross domestic product in the developing world would be half its current level. Or, more realistically, if these advances had simply been delayed by a decade, the world would have missed out on about $83 Trillion (again, capitalized for effect) in benefits from the increased nutrition unleashed by Boulaug and his disciples.

To shed even more light on this miraculous achievement that has enriched the lives of everyone today is that agriculture is no longer an extractive industry. Even after the discovery and widespread use of high-yield crops and synthetic fertilizer, agriculture still needed more land to grow the food necessary to nourish a growing population.

As the folks at ourworldindata.org put it, humans cleared one-third of the world’s forests and nearly two-thirds of the grasslands since the end of the last ice age all to sustain our species through agriculture since the only way to expand production was through cultivating wildlands.

With the tools provided by modern science and industry, however, that’s no longer the case. In fact, the world has passed “peak agricultural land,” a recent article declared. What that means is farmers and ranchers are producing more food than ever while at the same time reducing the number of acres devoted to that task.

In essence, it’s not just everyday people like you and me who are more divorced from how our food is raised. Earth itself is becoming increasingly separated from production agriculture because the riches of production agriculture are being realized in both dollars and the land left unspoiled.

Even after the discovery and widespread use of high-yield crops and synthetic fertilizer, agriculture still needed more land to grow the food necessary to nourish a growing population.As the folks at ourworldindata.org put it, humans cleared one-third of the world’s forests and nearly two-thirds of the grasslands since the end of the last ice age all to sustain our species through agriculture since the only way to expand production was through cultivating wildlands.With the tools provided by modern science and industry, however, that’s no longer the case. In fact, the world has passed “peak agricultural land,” a recent article declared. What that means is farmers and ranchers are producing more food than ever while at the same time reducing the number of acres devoted to that task.In essence, it’s not just everyday people like you and me who are more divorced from how our food is raised. The Friends of the Zoo Board of Directors will hold an official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Splash River and Nature Play Expansion on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Zoo.

The Zoo is building a Nature Play expansion as a no-cost, safe and welcome place for children and families with increased accessibility.

The Nature Play expansion retrofits the former parking lot into a natural-looking splash river, inclusive play elements, and green space with shaded seating. All these additions will be adjacent to the North American River Otter Exhibit that opened in the summer of 2020. This project is supported in part by the Land and Water Conservation Fund with completion in fall of 2022.

Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System continues to expand their family practice clinic.

"We brought on Dr. Johnson, probably almost six months ago," said Chuck Welch with Hutchinson Regional. "She has been seeing patients now, fully going for a month. The good news is that, her clinic is filling up so fast, it's necessitated additional providers. We've added a PA, Corwin Nozari. He'll start in a few months. We hope at four months that we'll have a complete entourage of physicians, including six."

"I've done a three year, pretty exhaustive market study on the ebbs and flows of patients and where they go for their care," Welch said. "Reno County, we sit in about a $250 million market. Those are actually people's lives.The dollars represent health care that's provided to the Reno County constituents. Unfortunately, about 43% of those folks are leaving Reno County to find health care outside of our community."

There are some things that Hutchinson doesn't have, but to Welch, it's important to equip what Hutchinson Regional can do, and that is provide that primary care piece here without travel.

"It's a medical truism that patients, 90% of the time, do better when they're surrounded by friends and family to heal. They do better at home."

According to the community health needs assessment, Reno County should have about 72 primary care doctors, right now they are at about 55.

Hutch Regional looking to expand primary care

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Monarchs owner Marc Blackim is excited about the group he's bringing to the Sunflower Collegiate League this summer.

"We've got players coming from all over the country," Blackim said. "Some young men are coming from some really good programs. I'm looking forward to the summer. It should be a quality team."

Blackim's goal is always to make the games a fun, family-friendly event.

"Kids 12 and under get in free," Blackim said. "Thirteen to 59 is five bucks and seniors 60 and over, it's two dollars. We have not changed our prices since the first year we were here 14 years ago. We just try and make it a very inexpensive, fun night for the whole family."

Blackim couldn't be happier to have his team playing at Hobart-Detter in Hutchinson.

"We're very fortunate, with Hobart-Detter being the facility that we get to call home every summer," Blackim said. "It's by far the best facility that we'll get to play on within our league."

The Monarchs are scheduled to open Monday against the Wichita Lobos, weather permitting.

Monarchs ready to open summer season

MARION, Kan. — One of the more popular lakes in central Kansas has been completely shut down after a blue-green algae hazard was declared.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued the alert for Marion Reservoir on Thursday. The KDHE says the problem is so bad at the lake that the Army Corps of Engineers is closing all campsites, parks, boat ramps and recreation areas until further notice.&nbsp;

The lake was shut down most of the summer last year because of similar problems, but the camping and recreation areas stayed open. Marion is the only large lake under any type of advisory at this time.

The algae may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. 

Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure, but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat and headache. If you or your dog come into contact with algae, rinse the area with clean, fresh water.

Marion Reservoir closed

Kan. — City of Hutchinson Human Resources director Tom Sanders is using outside help to try to find a temporary replacement for Ryan Hvitlok, after the Planning and Zoning director left for a job in Illinois.

"We've engaged a couple of firms to search to see if we can find an interim director," Sanders said. "We're not looking to fill that position until we get that City Manager position filled. We really feel like that person should be selecting that department head."

A local, experienced voice is helping for now.

"We've got Jim Seitnater, who worked for us for years in the downtown development and planning area. He's kind of keeping the doors open right now and handling day-to-day stuff. We're looking for someone who can add additional expertise on the more technical aspects of planning."

Hvitlok had been in Hutchinson almost three years, starting with the city in 2019.
