HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 Board of Education honored several outstanding staff members at their meeting on Monday (September 12, 2022).

Several staff members were honored at Monday’s meeting for awards that they received for their outstanding service to the USD 308 school district. These staff members included:

Sheila Berridge, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Assessment, gave a brief overview of each award and thanked the recipients for their service to the students and families of USD 308.

Students from Allen STEM Magnet also presented to the Board of Education at the meeting, sharing their experience being named National Champions at the KidWind competition in the Spring of 2022. They demonstrated their wind turbine and answered questions from board members on the competition.

Also the board held its&nbsp;Revenue Neutral Rate and budget hearings and approved this year's budget.

According to the Revenue Neutral Rate slide from Sheila Meggers presentation to the board, the district is due to levy $6,036,676 in property tax on their approximately $78 million budget. This is down from $6,084,855 last year.

The main reason they can do that is that bond and interest is shrinking quickly, with the district's bonded indebtedness down just over $9 million from last year. 

The Capital Outlay portion of the mill levy is going up, though, and thus they were required to hold the Revenue Neutral Rate hearing.

Staff members honored, budget passed at USD 308 board meeting Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas State Fair GM Bryan Schulz continues to work to find ways to keep the event strong after the pandemic left many things that are part of the fair in limbo. That still shows with some lower participation numbers in various exhibits. But Schulz says some of that may be more of a changing of the guard with how entries have come into the fair since the pandemic.

“There are some areas like our FFA area, we’ve had 10 (entries) in the past, we have over 500 this year,” Schulz said. “In talking with fairs across the country, and they're kind of seeing that because some of these areas, quilting and crocheting . . . is kind of an art that is maybe losing a little bit.”

Schulz says this means trying to get youth more involved in things that they can take an interest in. As far as the major exhibitors, logistical and supply issues have either reduced or forced some of the mainstay exhibitors to stay away from the fair this year.

“There are still supply chain issues out there,” Schulz said. “We had a couple say, 'I can’t get product still.'”

That and the new fire station means new spots have had to be invested for some exhibits.

“We were able to take some of the ones that were where the fire station is going,” Schulz said. “We’ve moved that to different places, more on the outer bounds and we’re able to fill in those big spots.”

Most of the spaces in the vendor and display buildings are mostly filled up, although the numbers are still recovering from 2019 levels.

Fair exhibitors still fighting supply issues

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Staff members at Hutchinson High School had the opportunity to tour local businesses on Monday as part of their professional development training.

Hutchinson High School and the Hutchinson Career &amp; Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) partnered with the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce to offer tours of 10 local businesses so that staff could get an inside look at industry within the Hutchinson community.

Laci Janzen, Economic Development &amp; Downtown Manager for the Hutch Chamber, welcomed staff members before the tours commenced and encouraged them to learn from their tours so they can share with students the importance of entrepreneurship and local commerce.

Rhyanna Reilly, an ELA teacher at HHS and KSDE Teacher of the Year semi-finalist, toured Takako Industries. “I had no idea what Takako was or what they did, but they provide so much for our community,” Reilly said. “I was impressed with how much they’ve given back to Hutchinson – from donating to our community parks to making connections for United Way. We were all interested in connecting how we can provide support as educators for companies like Takako. We discussed how what we do in the classroom sets up kids for success post-classroom, such as collaboration and reading comprehension skills. It was such a cool experience.”

“Our focus for planning the event is to connect our teachers at HHS and HCTEA with local business and industry,'' Travis Riebel, Director of the HCTEA said. “We hope to strengthen conversations and create partnerships focused on curriculum-taught, work-based learning, and career opportunities available to our students right here in the Hutchinson area.”&nbsp;

USD 308 and the Hutchinson Chamber have partnered on several other industry-based programs such as Signing Day and Career Quest. This partnership has given students in various grade levels the opportunity to explore different careers and trades and create goals for their lives post-graduation from USD 308.&nbsp;

USD 308 and Chamber provide inside look at local industries

Although the weather threw a small hiccup into things briefly Saturday, it was a great start to the Kansas State Fair overall, according to manager Bryan Schulz. Schulz said they didn't have attendance numbers from the first weekend yet on Monday morning, but they were very busy.

One barometer for the fair's success is the carnival take. Friday's carnival took in $82,000. Rain on Saturday limited the ridership to $143,000, but a pretty Sunday helped the crowds come back out and flood the fairgrounds and the carnival took in $223,000.

Another highlight of Sunday was the Grandstand comedy show from Gabriel Iglesias. Fluffy was a near sell out as over 6,000 people attended that concert.

"The people absolutely loved it," Schulz said. "He kept them going until, it was almost 10:30 p.m. Then he came down and signed autographs. People were bringing chocolate cakes for him. It was just amazing."

Hutchinson Police Chief Jeff Hooper said they had very few problems over the weekend, just a few traffic matters and one incident that was fair related but was not on the fairgrounds.

The Kansas Highway Patrol agreed that it was okay. They had ten medical matters to take care of, but none were significant.

Entrepreneurship Connections coming up Sept. 19

TOPEKA — A woman lost her appeal to gain custody of her grandchild from the Kansas foster care system when the Kansas Supreme Court ruled against her on Friday.

A 4-month-old, called N.E. in court documents, was placed into foster care. The baby’s grandmother wanted custody, but a lower court gave the child to a foster family, who ultimately adopted the child.

A Reno County judge said placing the child with the grandmother will “never be in a child's best interest” because she was disabled and “the alternative is a young healthy family.”

Attorneys for the grandmother shook off health concerns and said state law requires that family, or kinship placements, get the first chance at custody. Attorney Mitchell Engel, arguing for the grandmother, said in May 18 oral arguments that the judge’s ruling was erroneous.

“It just can’t be that an interested party, grandma who's supposed to get substantial consideration in this custody, has no ability to ever challenge these type of rulings based on no evidence,” Engel said.

The Kansas Supreme Court’s ruling against the grandmother didn’t say whether she was fit. Instead, it said she had no standing to challenge the decision because she didn’t appeal temporary custody orders and had no objection to the termination of parental rights. The majority opinion also says placement decisions are not appealable.

Court documents show the lower court had already ruled on decisions in the custody case before the grandmother's appeals were considered.

Justice Melissa Standridge dissented from the opinion and said the grandmother filed a motion for custody a month before the court considered adoption of N.E. and multiple months before parental rights were terminated. COVID-19 restrictions delayed some hearings.

The decision can have wide-reaching implications for how families appeal custody decisions and whether a ruling by the judge is final.

Grandmother loses Reno County custody case at Kansas Supreme Court

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Though gas in cities in Kansas as close as McPherson has fallen back below $3 a gallon, that's not yet true in Hutchinson. 

According to GasBuddy as of Monday morning, Murphy USA at WalMart, Yesway on East 30th, the Dillons Fuel Center just down the street from that and the Cenex on East 4th are all at $3.13 a gallon. 

Casey's on Main in McPherson is at $2.89 and Love's Travel Stop next to I-135 is at $2.90 a gallon.

The national average price for a gallon of gas fell seven cents in the past week to reach $3.71 according to AAA, a level not seen since the beginning of March. The primary reason for this decline is the recent lower cost for oil.

According to data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand increased slightly from 8.59 million barrels per day to 8.73 million barrels per day last week. 

Lower oil prices have led to falling pump prices. If gasoline demand begins to subside, as it typically does post-Labor Day with the end of summer driving, pump prices will likely continue to decrease.

Moran's Service Academy Selection Board to meet in Hutchinson Sept. 24

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; With Sedgwick County selected as one of the counties across the country to be part of the latest test of Wireless Emergency Alerts on Monday, it's important to note that the capabilities of those alerts have been used in emergency situations in Reno County, as well, according to Reno County Emergency Management director Adam Weishaar.

"The last time we've done that is during The Highlands wildfire as we were ordering evacuations," said Reno County Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar. "We can actually get in there, we can see a map and we can draw what we call a polygon around a certain area, so if we wanted to target the Highlands like we did, we draw on the map exactly where we want that alert to go out to and it sends a notification to cell phones pinging in that area."

The test on Monday is to determine the accuracy of those polygons in a small area of Wichita. Weishaar said that isn't the fastest way for Reno County to send out alerts.

"The wireless alerts are good," Weishaar said. "The only downfall, in my opinion, to those alerts is the timing it takes to get them out. Once we click the button, or once we develop a message and send them out, I would say there's approximately a 10 to 15 minute delay before it actually hits your cell phones. We do have the <a href="https://member.everbridge.net/index/453003085617923#/signup">Everbridge system</a>. You can sign up for those alerts and we can send those out a little quicker than we can an IPAWS message."

The National Weather Service also sends out Wireless Emergency Alerts in some situations for severe weather like tornado and flash flood warnings.

Weishaar: Wireless alerts help, but Everbridge is faster

We'll have the vehicle parked out there and we'll have a table set up to accept donations, and we'll see how much we can cover the car."

This is the second year they have done this fundraiser. The other event will be&nbsp;October 21, 2022 at the Buhler High School football game.

"At the Hutchinson game, we were in the neighborhood of $800," Soule said. "At the Buhler game, we were in the neighborhood of $2000. The Buhler game went really well and I just didn't have a whole lot of time to promote the Hutchinson event ahead of time. I would expect our Hutch number to go up a little bit this year and get us closer to what Buhler did."

A single medallion is a dollar with six for five dollars.

Cover the Cruiser events coming up for Special Olympics

Last spring my father-in-law purchased a handful of ewes to graze a pasture near his house. The pasture had not been grazed in a few years, and he liked the idea of having some animals on his farm after getting out of the cattle business about six years ago. He decided to purchase the ewes and make it a project with the grandkids. 

After the trailer of sheep arrived, each grandchild was allowed to pick out two ewes to claim as their own. Even before the sheep arrived, the kids helped their grandpa build the fencing and prepared the area for the animals.

Since their arrival, the kids have attempted to help tame these ewes that were born and spent the early part of their lives in the Flint Hills. The grandkids have helped feed and vaccinate the ewes. Some days I’ve found one of the kids sitting on the fence talking to the ewes as they anxiously eat their grain before returning to the pasture.

At the end of March, the kids watched as we turned out a ram with the flock. Soon blue chalk markings began appearing on the ewes. 

Fast forward to September where we are now on alert for lambs to begin arriving any day now. While the kids are simply excited to have some little lambs running around, my father-in-law is more focused on maintaining the health of the soon-to-arrive lambs and their mothers. I’m most concerned about how many lambs we could possibly bottle feed at once and being prepared with the supplies needed to ensure we can successfully feed multiple babies.

It reminds me a lot of when I was pregnant with my two children and the different areas of concern people within my family focused on. 

While I know my concern is one that can easily be addressed with a quick trip to town, I still want to be ready for the scenario in which we have bottle babies.

A handful of years ago my son was given a newborn calf whose mother had unexpectedly died on the coldest day of the year. My husband brought the tiny heifer home just a few hours after being born, and we quickly made adjustments to housing and bottle feeding the calf. In that scenario we weren’t even expecting a calf, but we were able to pivot quickly and begin caring for it. 

That calf is now Sunflower the cow, and she, too, is due to have her calf any day now. Although she is an experienced mama cow, my son and I are still on alert as we await her newest arrival.

The anticipation of baby animals on the farm this fall is exciting, and to have my two children observe life through their animals is something I am so thankful to expose them to. As we patiently await and prepare for these new little additions on the farm, we have begun to embrace and understand the importance of the task of keeping watch.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The zoning case for a proposed coffee shop in Yoder is on what is a light agenda for the Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday.

The county planning board already approved the case for Lawrence Street Properties, LLC for a conditional use permit to establish a coffee shop with drive-thru window at 9805 S. Yoder Road which is at the southwest corner of E. Red Rock Road and S. Yoder Road.

Also on the agenda is the destruction of 2020 Presidential General Election material, as statute says national ballots should be kept for 22 months. At the expiration of such time, the county election officer shall destroy them without previously opening any of the envelopes, in the presence of two electors of approved integrity and good repute, members of the two leading political parties. Such electors shall be designated by the board of county commissioners.

Public Works is set to put a pair of pressure washers on the PurpleWave auction site. 

Also the commission will vote on the appointments of Dave Yoder as the Fire Chief and Todd Strain as the Assistant Fire Chief of Reno County Fire District 8.

The purchase of three vehicles for the Reno County Sheriff's Office will be voted on as well. The department wants to buy three 2023 Ford Interceptor SUVs from Midwest Ford in the amount of $42,868 each for a total of $128,604.

The commission will designate a voting delegate and alternate for the Kansas Association of Counties (KAC) annual conference effective October 5, 2022 until the 2023 KAC Annual Conference and receive the annual report from the county's Information Technology department.

The Board of County Commissioners will meet at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, in the Reno County Annex Conference Room at 125 W. 1st Avenue.

Monday is Dillons Dollar Day at the Fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; &nbsp;The USD 308 Board of Education will hold their regularly scheduled meeting tonight at 6 p.m.

Immediately prior to that meeting will be the Revenue Neutral Rate hearing at 5:45 p.m. and the budget hearing at 5:50 p.m. for USD 308.

According to the Revenue Neutral Rate slide from Sheila Meggers presentation to the board, the district is due to levy $6,036,676 in property tax on their approximately $78 million budget. This is down from $6,084,855 last year. 

The main reason they can do that is that bond and interest is shrinking quickly, with the district's bonded indebtedness down just over $9 million from last year. The Capital Outlay portion of the mill levy is going up, though, and thus they are required to hold the Revenue Neutral Rate hearing.

Also on the agenda are presentations for the KidWind project, where a Hutchinson team won the national title last year and teacher recognition.

The board will also act on an application for a new FFA chapter at Hutch High.

USD 308 budget hearings are tonight

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The end of the federal fiscal year is September 30, and both Congressman Tracey Mann and U.S. Senator Jerry Moran spoke to Hutch Post on the subject while they were at the Kansas State Fair over the weekend.

"We go back to Washington on Tuesday," Mann said. "First priority will be the fiscal year. There's talk about it being a continuing resolution for a couple of months. We'll see what happens once we get into it."

Moran agreed with Mann's assessment that current levels of spending will be held for a couple of months, but said a lot of the groundwork for the overall budget has been laid.

"We've already done the budget and appropriation process for last year, although we did it this year, earlier this year," Moran said. "Now, we're going to see if we can get this year's done by the end of the year, in between now and December 31st. I think you're going to see a continuing resolution until we can get our work done. I would expect that to pass sometime on or about September 30. I'm opposed to a government shutdown. We need to make certain that we get that work done."

For both Moran and Mann, it's waiting on leadership to figure out the big picture before they can drill down into the details.

"Our job is really dependent upon the leaders of Congress reaching a top line number about how much money is going to be spent," Moran said. "Of course, there are differences. Democrats generally want to spend a lot more money. Republicans are interested in spending more money, but only on defense and national security. Those two things have to be resolved so we can fill in the spaces. In the meantime, we've worked those 12 appropriation bills to be in a place in which we're ready to pick them up, once we get that total amount."

The White House put out a 50-page memo earlier this month on what it believes is necessary in a continuing resolution to avoid a shutdown. The estimate on that approximately three month stopgap alone is $47 billion.

With federal budget deadline looming, continuing resolution looks likely

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Youth City Council has extended its application deadline. The new deadline is October 5. They have also scheduled the forum for prospective candidates. It will be October 22 at Memorial Hall at 10 a.m.

The Youth Council will be composed of 5 elected members who will be charged with representing youth in the City of Hutchinson.

The Youth City Council will be overseen by an advisory board consisting of the following members:&nbsp;

Steve Garza, Michael Jobe, Francis Garcia, Scott Jewell, Darryl Peterson, Heather Jobe and Esmeralda Tovar-Mora.

Increase youth voice and communication in Hutchinson’s future direction.

Increase volunteerism among youth and adults in civic affairs, and enhance civic education

Youth Council members will be selected through a competitive application process. An ideal youth council will be composed of a diverse group of young people that will represent ALL youth in Hutchinson.

The primary criterion for selection will be a demonstration that the young person wants to make a difference in Hutchinson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Superior Boiler has been a part of Hutchinson for more than 100 years. The company started as a welding shop and quickly grew to the company it is today. The company just completed a major expansion last year with the relocation of its watertube boiler facility from Richmond, Virginia, to Hutchinson.

The company manufactures industrial watertube and flextube boilers, scotch marine and vertical firetube boilers for process steam, hot water and waste heat recovery, and high-efficiency hot water condensing boilers. In addition to boilers, Superior Boiler also manufactures boiler room equipment items and parts, and provides 24-hour service. Superior Boiler employs approximately 150 people at its Hutchinson locations.&nbsp;

The company is in a unique situation compared to most manufacturers. That’s because Superior Boiler still relies heavily on non-computer controlled welding. Many of the components on the products the company makes are hand welded. The need for such skilled labor is great.

The making of boilers is a long and complex task, whether it's a firetube boiler or a watertube system. For a firetube boiler, it starts with taking a solid sheet of steel and fabricating it into a large vessel. In the watertube area, it means fabricating tubes that will be carried inside a very large containment area. Both require dozens of steps.&nbsp;

Each boiler starts in a design room where space needs are determined. How the boiler is going to service the facility is also determined. The process is necessary because each boiler is handmade to fit into a particular space. Each boiler has its own book of instructions, blueprints and details of how it will be built. Each step is closely watched by a quality control person. 

Once each step is finished, it is signed off and even stamped onto the boiler. The book moves from step to step with the boiler throughout its manufacturing process. 

Because no two boilers are alike, manual welding is so important to the company. While most of the boilers are made by hand, there are computers that cut parts and pieces as needed. 

Another machine in the watertube division can be programmed to bend steel tubes into a specific configuration to fit into a particular design.&nbsp;

The process for a firetube boiler versus a watertube system is very different. The watertube systems are extremely large and are built inside a housing. Some designs use a flatbed trailer. That trailer becomes a permanent part of the system once it is delivered to its location. A conventional boiler is also large, but is shipped by truck and then placed in its designated location.

Once the tubes are in place, the vessel is fitted inside the holding area and the rest of the system is assembled. This requires some very heavy lifting of steel plates that weigh several thousand pounds. Gantry cranes move back and forth across the facility doing the heavy lifting.

On a firetube boiler, the vessel is welded on until all connections are attached. The vessel then moves into an oven where it is heated to 1,100 degrees. That hardens the welded connections, making the boiler stronger.&nbsp; 

Once that process is finished, the vessel moves across the street for its final assembly and painting. The boiler’s controls and valves are installed and the boiler is painted either in traditional Superior Blue or whatever the customer orders. All of the components in this area come from vendors.

The area has its own shop where any part can be made, including one-of-a-kind parts as needed. The area even has its own wood shop to build the shipping crates needed to transport orders. The shop has carts to transport parts and pieces that will be assembled in the main plant. Each has a number matching the vessel across the street.

Each boiler can take 14-20 weeks to complete, depending on its size, and can weigh up to 60 tons. Watertube boilers can take up to 32 weeks to complete. They are shipped all over the world. Superior has a strong order list, but is fighting to find the skilled labor it needs to fulfill those orders — a problem many in the industrial sector are facing.

The company started as a welding shop and quickly grew to the company it is today. The company just completed a major expansion last year with the relocation of its watertube boiler facility from Richmond, Virginia, to Hutchinson.<div>

</div>The company manufactures industrial watertube and flextube boilers, scotch marine and vertical firetube boilers for process steam, hot water and waste heat recovery, and high-efficiency hot water condensing boilers. In addition to boilers, Superior Boiler also manufactures boiler room equipment items and parts, and provides 24-hour service. Superior Boiler employs approximately 150 people at its Hutchinson locations.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The company is in a unique situation compared to most manufacturers. That’s because Superior Boiler still relies heavily on non-computer controlled welding. Many of the components on the products the company makes are hand welded. The need for such skilled labor is great.<figure>

 </figure>The making of boilers is a long and complex task, whether it's a firetube boiler or a watertube system. For a firetube boiler, it starts with taking a solid sheet of steel and fabricating it into a large vessel. In the watertube area, it means fabricating tubes that will be carried inside a very large containment area. Both require dozens of steps.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Each boiler starts in a design room where space needs are determined. How the boiler is going to service the facility is also determined. The process is necessary because each boiler is handmade to fit into a particular space. Each boiler has its own book of instructions, blueprints and details of how it will be built. Each step is closely watched by a quality control person. <figure>

 </figure>Once each step is finished, it is signed off and even stamped onto the boiler. The book moves from step to step with the boiler throughout its manufacturing process. <figure>

 </figure>Because no two boilers are alike, manual welding is so important to the company. While most of the boilers are made by hand, there are computers that cut parts and pieces as needed. <figure>

 </figure>Another machine in the watertube division can be programmed to bend steel tubes into a specific configuration to fit into a particular design.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The process for a firetube boiler versus a watertube system is very different. The watertube systems are extremely large and are built inside a housing. Some designs use a flatbed trailer. That trailer becomes a permanent part of the system once it is delivered to its location. A conventional boiler is also large, but is shipped by truck and then placed in its designated location.<figure>

 </figure>Once the tubes are in place, the vessel is fitted inside the holding area and the rest of the system is assembled. This requires some very heavy lifting of steel plates that weigh several thousand pounds. Gantry cranes move back and forth across the facility doing the heavy lifting.<figure>

🎥A Day in the Life: Superior Boiler

YODER, Kan. — Two members of the Hutchinson Police Department were among those who completed their training at the center as part of the 298th class of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Officer Antonio Aguilera Jr. and Officer Kollin Goering will start their field training within the next couple weeks. Officer Goering was also placed on the Director's Honor Roll for obtaining a GPA of 94% or higher.&nbsp;

Officer Chandler Allen of the Leavenworth Police Department received the award for fitness while Officer Morney Sok of the University of Kansas Medical Center Police Department was recognized for his firearms proficiency as the class’s “Top Shot.”

Deputy David Decker of the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Chief Dale Finger of the Leawood Police Department. Steve McCorkill, KLETC Senior Instructor of Police, was the class coordinator.

Two new Hutchinson police officers complete training

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board will hold its revenue neutral and budget public hearings during a regular meeting Monday.&nbsp;

The budget totals $22,938,112 on total taxes levied of $3,542,863. The mill levy will increase from 42.6 to 43.1 mills.

Also Monday, the board will seek approval of the new contract agreement with its teachers. Under the agreement, the base pay will be $39,150. The board will also go over several personnel matters and hear reports from administrators and staff.

Monday’s meeting of the Nickerson USD 309 School Board begins at 7 p.m. at the school district offices at 4501 W. 4th Ave.

USD 309 School Board meets Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— As the Siemens Gamesa plant remains quiet in Hutchinson, company CEO Jochen Eickholt paid a visit to the US to address wind energy and the company. The plant has been closed since July, when logistical and economic pressure forced the company to close the Hutchinson and Fort Madison, Iowa plants.

According to Andrew Luther with SG, the company continues to pursue new orders for on-shore projects and is still waiting on development of two potential projects for which letters of intent have been taken. Luther says the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act is important for the industry and the company is reviewing its hibernation schedule for both facilities in light of the expected impact on onshore wind development in the US. Still, the company was not in a position to comment on specific timelines at this point in the process.

Eickholt had this to say after his visit to the SG corporate facility in Orlando, Florida.

“I’ve just returned from an amazing whistle-stop tour of the US, which left me inspired and optimistic about our future at <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/siemensgamesa/">Siemens Gamesa</a>. Siemens Gamesa still assessing plans in the US

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 2 Hutchinson Community College looked poised to take the game-winning kick with the wind Saturday afternoon at the end of regulation.

With the game knotted at 28, week two hero Rontavious Richmond fumbled for the second time. Iowa Central took over with 12 seconds and took a knee.

Overtime would not have been possible without a big extra point from Cole Segraves. The freshman kicker needed a 35-yard extra point with 10:17 left in the third quarter after Micah Woods caught a 36-yard touchdown pass and let the Iowa Central defense know about it.

The 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty was added to the try, but Segraves made good on the attempt.

It was not the last time he would be called upon to make a big kick into the wind and rain.

Hutchinson got off to a hot start after Woods caught the first TD of the day from Dylan Laible. The 15-yard strike tied Laible for the most touchdown passes in Dragon history. His 50th TD tied Luke Barnes.

The next 21 points belonged to No. 7 Iowa Central. Four quarterbacks played for the Tritons. Zach Marker started the day under center, but left after going 0-5 passing.

Justin Silverstein had better success. He only went 9 of 21, but notched two touchdown passes. One to Cal Weidemann to tie the game late in the first quarter and later in the second quarter on an 18-yard pass to Colton Hoag.

The two air strikes and a long TD run from Jadon Washington (69 yards), had the Dragon defense stunned.

Coach Drew Dallas said it was uncharacteristic of his defense to give up such a run.

"With the exception of the long run, we played good defense," Dallas said. Outside of the long run, the Dragons yielded 106 yards on the ground on 36 carries (2.94 yards per carry). The Dragons gave up 174 rushing yards in all and 198 through the air.

Dallas knew each Iowa Central quarterback had the ability to hurt his team in a different way.

Listed as an "athlete" on the roster, John Holcombe rushed for 36 yards and threw for another 49.

The final Triton to make an appearance at QB was Omarion Bartlett. He went 6 of 7 for 46 yards and rushed for another 36.

Hutchinson helped Iowa Central by giving up the ball four times (muffed punt, two fumbles and one interception).

"We gave them four extra tries and they took advantage of them," Dallas said about the turnovers. Iowa Central did not fumble or throw an interception, but did turn the ball over a few times on downs.

Dylan Laible's quarterback play was overshadowed by two big kicks from Segraves. Coach Dallas said the passing game was "kind of a blur at the moment" in his mind after the way Saturday's game ended.

 </figure>By DAREN DUNN Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 2 Hutchinson Community College looked poised to take the game-winning kick with the wind Saturday afternoon at the end of regulation.With the game knotted at 28, week two hero Rontavious Richmond fumbled for the second time. Iowa Central took over with 12 seconds and took a knee.Overtime would not have been possible without a big extra point from Cole Segraves. The freshman kicker needed a 35-yard extra point with 10:17 left in the third quarter after Micah Woods caught a 36-yard touchdown pass and let the Iowa Central defense know about it.The 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty was added to the try, but Segraves made good on the attempt.It was not the last time he would be called upon to make a big kick into the wind and rain.Hutchinson got off to a hot start after Woods caught the first TD of the day from Dylan Laible. The 15-yard strike tied Laible for the most touchdown passes in Dragon history. His 50th TD tied Luke Barnes.The next 21 points belonged to No. 7 Iowa Central. Four quarterbacks played for the Tritons. Zach Marker started the day under center, but left after going 0-5 passing.Justin Silverstein had better success. He only went 9 of 21, but notched two touchdown passes. One to Cal Weidemann to tie the game late in the first quarter and later in the second quarter on an 18-yard pass to Colton Hoag.The two air strikes and a long TD run from Jadon Washington (69 yards), had the Dragon defense stunned.Coach Drew Dallas said it was uncharacteristic of his defense to give up such a run."With the exception of the long run, we played good defense," Dallas said. Outside of the long run, the Dragons yielded 106 yards on the ground on 36 carries (2.94 yards per carry). The Dragons gave up 174 rushing yards in all and 198 through the air.Dallas knew each Iowa Central quarterback had the ability to hurt his team in a different way.Listed as an "athlete" on the roster, John Holcombe rushed for 36 yards and threw for another 49.The final Triton to make an appearance at QB was Omarion Bartlett. He went 6 of 7 for 46 yards and rushed for another 36.Hutchinson helped Iowa Central by giving up the ball four times (muffed punt, two fumbles and one interception)."We gave them four extra tries and they took advantage of them," Dallas said about the turnovers. Iowa Central did not fumble or throw an interception, but did turn the ball over a few times on downs.Dylan Laible's quarterback play was overshadowed by two big kicks from Segraves. Coach Dallas said the passing game was "kind of a blur at the moment" in his mind after the way Saturday's game ended.<figure>

After review, the play stood.Hutchinson withstood a 21-point run from Iowa Central and put on a 21-point run of its own.The surge started with the Simmons goal-to-go run, continued with Woods' 36-yard grab and was capped with another run from Simmons.This one came from 5 yards away to finish a 7-play, 64-yard drive.Iowa Central had the only score in the fourth quarter.It came with 3:57 left to play. Bartlett hit Cal Weidemann for the 7-yard score.Tied at 28, Hutchinson had a chance to win the game in regulation.The Dragons were driving behind Tre Bess and his 89 yards rushing. Bess put the Dragons in a first and goal-to-go situation, but exited the game with an injury.Last week's rushing hero (Richmond: 158 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown), fumbled the ball away with 12 seconds to go as Hutchinson tried to put the ball in the middle of the field for a game-winning kick.Iowa Central played for overtime and lost the toss.Hutchinson elected to play defense first and stopped the Tritons on a 4th and 1. Terry Kirksey had his biggest tackle of seven on the day when he stopped the run short.Starting from the 25 yard line, Hutchinson moved the ball enough to put Segraves in position to make the game-winning kick.Segraves missed from 40 and 41 in week one, but hit from 50 (on a play that was blown dead). Segraves hurt himself against Navarro and did not get to try the 50-yarder again in week one (Connor Gellender stepped in and left the attempt just short).With the wind and rain in his face, and the game on the line, Segraves had to wait for his big kick after Iowa Central tried to ice him.After the timeout, Segraves sent the 39-yarder sky high in the wind.
