Wilderness emergency class in Harvey County

NEWTON, Kan. — US Outdoor First Aid announced on Nov. 11, their first Wilderness and Remote First Aid Class for the 2022-2023 training season will be held on Dec. 10 and 11, at Camp Hawk, in Harvey County just south of Newton, Kan.  

This is US Outdoor First Aid's 16-hour, Intensity Level II class that goes beyond Standard First Aid training.

It is patterned after the training Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) students receive.  

“Our goal is for the participants to be confident in their ability to competently provide lifesaving First Aid skills in an emergency situation until EMS arrives,” said US Outdoor First Aid.  

Typical class participants, according to US Outdoor First Aid, are active in recreational activities such as hiking, hunting, cycling, and camping.  

They are involved in remote and rural occupations such as farming and ranching.  

They are located where natural disasters such as winter storms, tornadoes, and floods could occur.  

By completing this course participants will earn certifications in: 

CPR/AED/Choking, a two-year certification.  

Wilderness and Remote First, a two-year certification.  

A certification with Stop the Bleed.  

Participant will learn to deal with a variety of topics like, airway and breathing problems, as well as severe bleeding and shock situations.  

The Level II class will cover trauma emergencies involving, bones and joint injuries, splinting, soft tissue injuries, and cuts and burns.  

Students will learn how to handle medical emergencies such as severe asthma attacks, seizures, diabetic emergencies, stroke and heart attacks.  

Additionally, environmental emergencies involving tick, spider, and snake bites, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, dehydration, and hypothermia and frost bite, are part of the curriculum.   

The lead instructor for the Wilderness and Remote First Aid Class, Doug Trumble, is a National and State of Kansas Certified EMT.  

He has the Wilderness endorsement to his EMT certification from the University of Utah School of Medicine.  

Trumble teaches EMTs at an area community college and is on the Fire/EMS Reserve Team of a local Fire/EMS department.
