NEWTON, Kan. — There will be five artistic murals of Kansas birds to be displayed on the educational kiosks at the new R. Michael Rhoades (RMR) Community Wetlands Park in Newton.
Newton Murals & Arts Project received grant funding from Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC) and the Rotary Club of Newton to issue a statewide call for art.
Any resident of Kansas can submit an artistic concept to be considered for selection. Interested persons can read all the terms and conditions regarding their submission at newtonmurals.org/callforart.
“Incorporating murals into the RMR Community Wetlands Park will further engage visitors with the birdwatching theme, spark discussions about the featured species, and demonstrate how art is integral to science and public greenspaces,” said Libby Albers, KAWS representative.
Concept Submissions must be submitted online or postmarked by December 1, 2022.
Submissions must include the form provided at the previous website, a drawing (hand sketch or digital art) no larger than 8.5 x 11”, and a brief description of your subject. Artistic depictions of Kansas Birds should be limited to the specific species listed in the terms and conditions, which include Kansas Endangered Species, Threatened Species, and SINC (Species in Need of Conservation).
The submissions must be inspired by the Audubon Mural Project in New York City.
Five artist concepts will be selected. Selected artists will be provided the materials for executing the final artwork, as well as a stipend of $1,000 once the final work is complete and delivered.
