HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Honor and remember those who are fighting or have fought cancer at the Cancer Council of Reno County's annual Starlight event on Saturday.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at Avenue A Park.

New this year, there will be food trucks parked along Main and Ave A for attendees to enjoy while you listen to the music and enjoy the dancers. 

The ceremony begins at 8 p.m.&nbsp;If you are planning on joining the Council and lighting a lantern, they encourage you to pick up your lantern and decorate it ahead of time.

"We're stumping for Governor candidate Derek Schmidt," Marshall said. "It's been a great week with him. This is day number six, the last week. We'll be all over south central Kansas today, including Hutchinson."

U.S. Senator on the stump for statewide Republican slate Monday in Hutch

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Open Door Pregnancy Care Center's Fall Fundraising Banquet is Thursday.

"It's at the Meadowlark Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds," said Kristi Busatti with the center. "We are just super excited to be able to host an event where we can partner with the community to raise funds for unplanned pregnancies here in Reno County and beyond."

The speaker for Thursday is Dr. William Lile, known nationally as the ProLife Doc.

"He's an OB-GYN from Florida," Busatti said. "He will be here to talk a lot about, kind of the medical side of unplanned pregnancies and a little bit about what abortions are like and the abortion pill and it's going to be a great night of education and just coming together to fellowship."

Open Door is just that, open, to those dealing with unplanned pregnancy as they have life-altering choices to make.

"We want to love on people," Busatti said. "We want to shine the light of Christ. We want to have eyes that see and ears that truly hear. We're not just a one and done. We walk alongside our clients from start to finish. Even for the most educated person, it's still really hard. A lot of our clients are lacking a lot of support and that's why we want to be there for them."

Open Door Fall Fundraising Banquet is Thursday

The morning air has turned crisp, the temperatures have begun to drop, and the sun noticeably rises a little bit later every morning. It is definitely beginning to feel like fall on the farm. Most evenings are also filled with a layer of dust in the atmosphere stirred up by the steady movement of the combines and tractors in the surrounding fields.&nbsp; While we continue to bring the grain out of the fields during fall harvest, we have also turned our attention to the fields that will soon have green shoots growing. It’s time to start sowing wheat. After missing rain showers practically all summer, we recently received some much-needed moisture. The slow, steady rain provided us assurance that it does, in fact, still rain on occasion.&nbsp; But it also provided our soil with enough moisture to ensure a good start for most of our wheat. The hard red winter wheat we place into the ground every fall has proven time and time again it can handle a lot of extreme weather conditions throughout the year. From arctic blasts in the winter, late freezes and hailstorms in the late spring, we know this crop is hardy.&nbsp; But one thing the wheat absolutely needs to ensure a good start is moisture in the ground. For many months we’ve waited for it to rain. We’ve looked really hard for signs that a rain could be coming.&nbsp; We’ve been teased with chances of precipitation all summer to only see those chances dissipate to nothing within 10-day forecasts. We’ve prayed for it to rain.&nbsp; And we breathed a sigh of relief and gave thanks when the small rain finally came. It’s amazing how something like a rain shower can completely alter our outlook. It’s as if a rain can wash away any doubt that might have settled in our minds.&nbsp; It’s cleansing and provides the rejuvenation of faith we all need to begin a new season. It encourages us to firmly believe many seeds can and will be produced from one tiny seed planted into the ground. As primarily dryland farmers, a rain shower is life-giving for our present and future crops alike. As we continue to sow the wheat into the soil this month, we know that we’ll need more rain to get to a successful harvest. And while the forecast doesn’t show any chance of precipitation in the near future, we’ll sow anyway.&nbsp; We’ll continue the tasks on the farm this fall and plan for a successful wheat crop this summer – all while patiently waiting on a rain.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners will continue the process of getting ready to renovate&nbsp;the District Attorney, District Courts, Information Technology, Human Resources, and County Administration portions of the interior of the Courthouse as part of its agenda on Tuesday.

On that agenda is approval of&nbsp;bid documents to be distributed for the remodel with the goal to accept a bid before the end of the year. No price tag for that approval was listed in the agenda documents.

Also, the 5th floor roof sections of the courthouse are nearing end of life, and took a beating during the current repairs to the dome area of the building. 

The county budgeted for replacing the 20 year old Health Dept. roof in 2022, but staff has determined this roof is still in good condition and should last a few more years.

The recommendation is to redirect those budgeted funds toward replacing the courthouse 5th floor sections, along with a small section on the south face, third floor, and the section over the north entrance ramp area in preparation for the interior renovations.

The agreement on the roof would be with GLMV Architecture in the amount of $9,750.00.

In addition,&nbsp;the bid documents would be prepared over the next couple of months for the recommended&nbsp;limestone façade anchors that Engelland Construction has advised would be prudent to fix with the project going out to bid early in 2023.

That agreement would also be with GLMV in the amount of&nbsp;$6,000.00.

The Commission will also look at competing proposals from iParametrics and Loyd Group to consult with them on the&nbsp;American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) federal grant from the State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF). The&nbsp;iParametrics proposal would be at a cost not to exceed $300,000. Loyd Group's cost would be not to exceed&nbsp;$472,061.

Also on the agenda is the annual update from Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton where he will go over his budget request for the coming year.

Commissioners will also look at a proposal from SJCF Architecture for a&nbsp; Reno County Needs Assessment and Masterplan for county buildings at a not to exceed cost of $45,000.&nbsp;

The Board of County Commissioners will meet in the County Commission Chambers at the Reno County Courthouse Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Interior courthouse renovation process part of Commission agenda

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jessica Flax, the new full time director of the Hutchinson Regional Medical Foundation, said sometimes the best kept secret about the hospital isn't really the best kept secret.

"The foundation really, was established back in the early 1980s as the lifeline of the hospital at the time," Flax said. "The role for the foundation has been a critical role in any type of capital improvements that we've done, any type of remodeling, any type of expansion. We like to joke around that I'm the IV to the hospital, but really, overall to the health care system."

Flax really wants to be sure the community knows that its efforts to support the hospital with ongoing giving have not gone unnoticed.

"We are who we are today because of community support," Flax said. "We have a great list of donors and constituents who support our causes. They are the reason why we were able to make those wonderful donations for the betterment of our healthcare system. Really, for the future, they are the reason why we continue to have a strong hospital in our community that is thriving."

A big emphasis for the foundation these days is getting the best doctors they can to come to Hutchinson.

"A large charge for the foundation in recent years has been physician recruitment, bringing in high quality care for our residents. It is a lot of buildings, it's a lot of cables, it's a lot of physical structure, but again, one of the things that I'm most excited about is the people that we get to bring in to our community. That really is our healthcare system mission, enhancing the quality of life."

Flax: Foundation is working on recruitment and fundraising

THOMAS COUNTY—Five people were injured in an accident just after 9 p.m. Sunday in Thomas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Honda CRV driven by Christina R.&nbsp;Oleartchick, 22, Arlington, was northbound on U.S. 83 nine miles east of Colby, when the driver failed to stop at a posted Stop sign at the U.S. 24 Junction and struck an eastbound 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 30-year-old Olivia&nbsp;Chavez Garcia of Hoxie in the back passengers side.

EMS transported&nbsp;Chavez Garcia and passengers Carlos&nbsp;Trevino Garcia, 32, Hoxie, an 8-year-old boy, a 5-year-old boy and a 9-month old boy all of Hoxie to Citizen's Medical Center in Colby.

Oleartchick was not transported for treatment, according to the KHP report.

The older children were wearing seatbelts but not properly restrained in a child safety seat, according to the KHP. The adults were properly restrained and the baby was properly restrained in a child safety seat.

BUHLER, Kan. — If you have mental health training and experience, but are looking for just a few hours while your kids are at school, Buhler USD 313 would like to talk with you.

"We have a position open right now that we have not had any applicants for," said USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman. "It is a unique position. It's called a mental health liaison. It's through a grant that we got through the State Department of Education and through the legislature that supports mental health. What this person would do is be a liaison between our counselors and families and Horizons Mental Health, which comes in to our buildings and works."

This is a person to have the time to make the connections between those kids who counselors believe need extra help and the people from Horizons who can provide it.

"Horizons comes in our buildings right now for counseling sessions," Couchman said. "They would then talk to our counselors about referrals of students who maybe need a little bit more, following up with those families and connecting them with resources at Horizons. It is only right now a 15 hour a week job that we're looking at it's a lot of flexibility, about three hours a day. If you are somebody that says, hey I could do that, I've got some experience with working with counselors or any of those fields. We're looking for somebody with a Bachelor's."

USD 313 looking to use state mental health grant

TOPEKA, Kan. —The Office of the State Fire Marshal awarded much needed funds to 89 fire departments in Kansas through the Kansas Firefighter Recruitment and Safety Grant Program, totaling $1.3 million. 

This year, over $2.4 million was requested by 97 volunteer/part-time fire departments in Kansas for safety gear, washer/extractor machines and junior firefighter programs. Departments received close to $1.2 million to be used for safety gear, $106,000 for 20 washer/extractor machines, and $1,200 for the junior firefighter programs. Due to the high number of requests, OSFM will be requesting the 2023 Legislature continue funding this important grant.

There is also a proven increase in cancer diagnoses for firefighters, which can be caused by prolonged exposure to carcinogens, particulates, and biohazards. The proper gear, regular cleaning of that gear and equipment, along with preventative healthcare is crucial for a firefighter’s health and well-being.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Andover Lutheran Church BBQ near Windom later this month will benefit a Hutchinson-based Special Olympics team.

Church members will start serving home-cooked pork sandwiches and homemade desserts at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 23 for a free will donation.&nbsp;

All proceeds will go to the&nbsp;Eagles of Reno County Special Olympics team.

Andover Lutheran is on Dakota Road about a mile east of Plum in the southwest corner of McPherson County, a little less than a half hour from Hutch.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Four adults escaped a fire early Sunday morning in Hutchinson.

According to a release from the Hutchinson Fire Department, crews responded to 328 East Avenue F just after 1:15 a.m. Sunday. The one and a half story house had heavy fire showing from the front when firefighters arrived.

The fire was extinguished, but not before two dogs died. A third dog was rescued from the home. The Red Cross is assisting the family. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Four people escape Sunday morning house fire

RENO COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 8 p.m. Saturday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Toyota Rav4 driven by Diamond D. Lewis, 24, Lawrence, was westbound on Des Moines W Avenue when it approached the curve onto Northbound Valley Pride&nbsp;on the southwest side of South Hutchinson.

The vehicle began to skid, struck the guardrail on the west side of Valley Pride and&nbsp; rolled into the ditch.

EMS transported Lewis to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

HAVEN, Kan. — Haven Steel Products began construction of its production facility in 1968 and has been a privately-owned company producing spring steel components since 1969. 

The company fabricates and heat treats tillage components for the agricultural industry, landscaping and mowing components for the construction industry, and leaf springs for the trailer industry.

The plant’s heat-treat processing capacity includes five continuous process quench and temper heat-treat lines. Part fabrication is accomplished using highly-accurate CNC machine technology, rapid-heat natural gas furnaces, and electric induction heating processes.

The original building started with 7,000 square feet of space and has now grown to 200,000 square feet. The plant heat treats various components, shapes them and then powder coats or paints them to order. 

Nearly all of the steel used by Haven Steel comes from the U.S. The steel is shipped in by truck and the company usually takes in two truck loads per day. The work is non-stop at the facility as crews work six days a week. Three shifts are needed to keep up with demand. The company runs 24-7.

The company has been able to expand and bring more robotic equipment online to keep up with the busy schedule. The machine is computer controlled and heats shapes and cools the parts in one contained area.

The company ships to Canada, Mexico, England and South America, along with many areas of the United States. The company recently purchased a similar facility in McKenzie, Tennessee.

Over the past two years, the company has grown its footprint by expanding its capabilities to new levels and new industries.&nbsp;

Quality control is needed to make sure the parts fit a customer's needs. A set of jigs is used to measure parts.&nbsp;Backup Documentation is kept for at least three years on all steel and processes performed by Haven Steel. Third-party certified calibration companies also provide certification and calibration to ensure accurate quality evaluations.

Once the parts are made, they are brought into a special booth where they are powder coated. You can get any color you want as long as it's black. The powder coating is a two-step process where a part is blasted with tiny beads to remove dirt and loose particles before the powder coating is applied.

While some similar companies mill their tillage and cutting blades into shape, Haven Steel uses a process that presses the cutting edge into the part. The company feels that it makes the edge more durable.&nbsp;

The company's products are shipped to original equipment manufacturers (OEM) throughout the continental United States, Canada, Mexico, England, and South America. Customers include major OEMs and many short-line manufacturers of products and equipment.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jeff Schenk, engineering construction manager with the City of Hutchinson has been recommended to join the South Hutchinson City Council to complete the remainder of Megan Weber's term. 

Weber resigned at the last council meeting because her family was moving out of town.&nbsp;

Schenk's appointment is on the agenda for the South Hutchinson City Council on Monday.&nbsp;

Also on the agenda is Jeanelle Simpson's appointment as City Clerk following the retirement of Denise McCue.&nbsp;

In addition, at Monday's meeting, South Hutchinson will also issue general bond obligations to pay the costs of improvements and issuance related to the IdeaTek fiber optic project.

The principal amount of the bonds shall not exceed $1,660,000 and the interest rate shall not exceed 7.00%. IdeaTek will receive up to $1,500,000 in proceeds from the sale of the bonds to build out its network.

The funds from the sale of these bonds will be assessed against the parcel the City previously sold to the company, including the attached infrastructure. Thus, future bond payments will be made with funds collected from IdeaTek via the special assessments attached to the parcel.

Special Counsel Austin Parker will be available via telephone while representatives from Gilmore &amp; Bell and IdeaTek will be present to answer any questions from the council. The council will also look at a development agreement with the utility.

The South Hutchinson City Council meets Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the city offices at 2 S Main.

September was Healthy Aging month, an annual observance which is reaffirmation that, regardless of age, no one is getting younger and we are, (hopefully) as the old expression goes “aging gracefully.”

For the second year in a row, America’s life expectancy declined to 76.1 years, the lowest since 1996. The two year drop of 2.7 years is the largest decline in 100 years. Factors included in the decline range from COVID-19 to accidental deaths, drug overdoses and an unhealthy lifestyle.

On the other hand, 97,000 Americans have achieved the distinction of being centenarians, a term denoting more than 100 years in age, the most of any nation on earth. Men should take note that 85 percent of centenarians are women.

In a recent interview, a 105-year old farmer in Minnesota attributed his longevity to maintaining an active mind and body.

As a healthcare professional, I am often asked for an opinion on healthy living. Although some may say genetics is the ultimate factor in our longevity, we can all slow potential medical problems by mere changes in lifestyle. So, if cardiovascular issues are common in your family tree, it should be a warning sign that exercise and healthy eating habits may reduce the chances of that occurring to you.

Driving to work early each morning, it is encouraging to observe Hutchinsonians starting their day with a brisk walk. And, in my trips to a local gym it is apparent that more people are starting their day with a workout. There are days I almost want to say “power to you and keep it up.”

Medical journals are unanimous in stating smart food choices, a good night’s sleep of seven to nine hours, avoidance of tobacco products and no more than a moderation consumption of alcohol are important factors in longevity.

Many non-consumption factors that are often overlooked deal with the mind and include everything from adaptability to change, maintaining a sense of humor, determination, optimism, and maintaining social relationships.

It is never too late to take control of your health; so, let’s all make the commitment to do so today and by next September we will be reaping the benefits of a healthier and happier life.

Johnson: September was Healthy Aging Month; are we living up to it?

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The options for early morning beverages continue to spread in the Salt City. 

The&nbsp;Hutchinson Planning Commission will take on a rezoning as part of its meeting on&nbsp;Tuesday to allow for an HTeaO, a drive-thru iced tea store.

HTeaO is a business that features 25 different flavors of sweet and unsweetened tea, with more than 500 combinations of drinks that can be created. Those stores traditionally also have a retail side where you can go into the store and purchase permanent cups and snacks.

They already have one completed location in Wichita, with a second one to come. The new store will be near the corner of East 30th Avenue and Waldron Street, just 350 feet down the street from where there is already a Scooter's Coffee location and on the opposite side of the street from the Subway sandwich shop.

The&nbsp;Hutchinson Planning Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chamber at 125 E Avenue B.

Planning board to hear case on iced tea store

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;

In August of 2022, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation partnered with the Kansas State Fair to provide a total of eleven Automated External Defibrillator (AED) devices to be placed in buildings around the Fairgrounds. 

Understanding the importance of having these live-saving devices on such a large-scale property, Kansas State Fair staff positioned the devices in all areas of the grounds. During the Fair, a Kansas State Fair staff member in one of the commercial buildings, along with two Kansas Highway Patrol troopers and a few Hutchinson Community College Nursing students utilized an AED device in an attempt to resuscitate a woman that collapsed. That woman died.

A separate incident occurred on the last Saturday of the Fair as two troopers were passing by the Swine Barn and were notified of a medical emergency. After assessing the individual and administering CPR, one of the troopers grabbed the AED that had been installed in the barn and applied it to the individual. That person survived. “It gives me great comfort knowing we have the AEDs on grounds and available if needed, even beyond the ten-days of the Kansas State Fair,” stated General Manager, Bryan Schulz.&nbsp; “We, again, would like to thank the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Kansas for providing the devices and thank the troopers, staff and bystanders for their swift actions and prompt utilization of the AEDs.” Kansas State Fair personnel, along with Reno County EMS, will recognize the troopers and other individuals that assisted with lifesaving efforts during this year’s Fair at the Employee/Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, Tuesday, October 11, in the Domestic Arts Building. &nbsp;

They have allotted a half hour for a discussion on an outstanding debt and financing analysis as part of their October meeting.

Also on the agenda are updates from the Ad Astra Virtual Academy and the Reno County Education Cooperative. 

They will also discuss policy related to food service, as this is the first year back with regular lunch costs after those were all picked up by the federal government during the pandemic.

The Buhler USD 313 Board of Education meets Monday night at 6 p.m. in the Burkholder Administrative Center in Buhler.

MANHATTAN, Kansas — The Governor’s Wildfire Task Force will meet on Wednesday, October 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Kansas Regional Training Institute, 2929 Scanlan Avenue in Salina. Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer is a member of the task force.

The meeting is open to the public and will discuss recommendations for how federal, state, and local officials, along with Kansas communities, can better prevent, respond to, and recover from wildfires. A Zoom link can be available upon request.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The YMCA and Hutchinson USD 308 are going to begin discussions on the future of the Y at its current location adjacent to Hutchinson High School, if approval is granted by the Hutchinson USD 308 school board on Monday.

That is the main action item on the school board's agenda for Monday night. 

They will also hear an update on the house project from HCTEA, look at the Transitional Learning Center's 2022-2023 Interagency Agreement, they'll get an update on the Outside Visitation Team's findings from when they visited as part of the accreditation process and they'll hear the regular report from Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson.
