RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Reno County Public Works announced three road closures on April 27.&nbsp;

Castleton Road between Sego Road and Fairview Road is closed to all through traffic as of&nbsp;Thursday, April 27 until further notice.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Local Bridge Load Rating Program inspected and closed the bridge due to a lower load rating. 

This bridge is located two miles south of the City of Arlington.

Also as of April 27, Peace Road between Sun City Road and Silver Lake Road will be closed to all through traffic beginning today until further notice.

KINGMAN COUNTY— The Kingman County Sheriff's Office is seeking public assistance to find out about bridge damage in the county.

The call for the bridge damage initially took place on April 18 at 8:18 a.m. on SE 10 St east of SE 30 Ave in Kingman County.&nbsp;

According to the Sheriff's Office, that bridge has&nbsp;only recently been opened as it was closed for a period of time while significant upgrades were performed.

Kingman County inquiring about bridge damage

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Friday is the 7th Annual Salthawk Service Day across Hutchinson USD 308.

"There's some that will be volunteering around the school," said spokesperson Marissa Meis. "There's always a group that will be cleaning up the courtyard, doing some painting. Some will be helping out the Humane Society by creating toys for the dogs. Others will be picking up trash. There's a full list and students are going to be out across the entire community."

All students will report to their seminar class at 8 a.m. to start their assigned projects at 8:10 a.m. They will work until 11 a.m. and then school is dismissed for the day.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Parents of USD 308 kindergartners for the 2023-24 school year are invited to attend an in-school district-wide Kindergarten Countdown from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2023 in all the district’s neighborhood elementary schools. This is a come-and-go event designed for students to get pre-enrolled and to meet school staff.

This is for any child who will be 5 on or before Aug. 31, 2023.

If you are new to the district, or would like to check what school your child will be attending, <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1hBNhMYePJPI4H6F8VHRow8CmX1hvP_M&amp;ll=38.064230881185864%2C-97.8424545&amp;z=12">the map is here</a>. The Allen event will be May 2 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Families are asked to go on social media and “follow” their school’s page and download the USD 308 mobile app to stay updated with their child's school and district events.&nbsp;

Kindergarten Countdown Thursday in USD 308

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Pat Willis began at Reno County Youth Services in 1995 and on Friday she will retire as the Shift Supervisor after 28 years. RCYS staff, friends, former co-workers and family members helped her celebrate her retirement Wednesday.

A statement was read by Assistant Director Joe Hammeke during Pat Willis' retirement party Wednesday afternoon at Reno County Youth Services.&nbsp;

"Congratulations Pat Willis for 28 years of service at Reno County Youth Services. It's hard to argue that anyone has worked as hard as you have worked collectively over those 28 years, maintaining the stamina, resilience, and dedication you demonstrate every shift. We wish you the best in your retirement but will miss your hard work, leadership, and friendship. You are truly appreciated."&nbsp;

According to Hammeke, Pat started her career with RCYS in a standby position on January 5th, 1995. Three short weeks later, she took the second shift position as a Youth Care staff on January 27th. Pat held this position until June 4th, 1997, when she moved to first shift in the shelter. She held this position until August 1st, 2005, when she was promoted to 2nd shift supervisor and shelter. For the next 15 years, she would remain as the supervisor on that shift, providing invaluable consistency and structure within that shift. Pat made one final move within the shelter when she became the first shift supervisor, a position she held until her retirement.

"She cares for the youth as though they are her own, holding them accountable when necessary and supporting them through the ups and downs they experience. Because of that she has often had to bear the brunt of their frustrations, but she's the first one they want to go to when they need something. 

"Pat has always ensured holidays and special occasions are celebrated with specially planned activities or meals, decorations, and activities for the youth so that they can share in those occasions as well. Many RCYS staff have been taught, coached, and molded directly by Pat, as well as through the example she has set."

Pat Willis retiring from Reno County Youth Services after 28 years

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — U.S. Representative Tracey Mann voted for the debt limit increase bill in Congress this week. He spoke to Hutch Post prior to the vote about the philosophy behind starting this process.

"We're going to hit the debt limit here in a few weeks," Mann said. "So far, President Biden has been unwilling to negotiate and really come to the table and talk about what it would look like to extend it and kind of rein in our spending at the same time. I think it's reasonable and responsible to think that we would have an adult conversation in this country about our spending levels."

&nbsp; The Limit, Save, Grow Act passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 217-215 and will be sent to the U.S. Senate for further review. It is likely the Democratic Party leadership will not even bring the bill to a vote in the near future.

"If I maxed out my credit card, I'm responsible for those charges," Mann said. "We absolutely are responsible for the debt. However, before you call the credit card company and just raise the limit and keep on going down the road, it makes sense to really talk about spending and look at how we got where we are. Unfortunately, so far, President Biden has been unwilling to come to the table and do that."

The House bill, if passed by the Senate and signed by the President, both of which are unlikely, would increase Washington's borrowing authority by $1.5 trillion or until March 31, whichever comes first.

Hutchinson Community Concerts announces upcoming season

Hutch Post, in partnership with Steve Harmon and the Conard-Harmon Collection, is proud to present Throwback Thursday. Enjoy a weekly release from Steve Harmon as he presents the "Hutch - Then &amp; Now Collection."

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the rural corner of East 4th Avenue and North Obee Road. 

The Iris Drive-In, sometimes called the Airport Drive-In Theatre, was built in 1948 by the Sproule brothers: Robert, Carl, Lee and George. 

DBA Sproule Theatre Circuit, the theatre was built at a cost of $75,000 with a 35-by-47-foot screen tower and a 500 car capacity. 

The theatre opened in July of 1948. The first feature was the 1946 comedy "A Night In Casablanca" starring the Marx Brothers. 

The Sproule Brothers built this as well as the State Theatre, later called the Flag Theatre. In May of 1966, Jay Wooten &amp; Dennis Montee purchased the drive-in, DBA Farmington Corporation. They also owned the Ayr-Vu and South Hutch drive-ins. 

The first photo shows The Iris from the air about 1968.

In 1972, Jay and Dennis sold the South Hutch and Iris to Commonwealth Theatres. On June 27, 1973, The Iris reopened as the Airport Drive-In. It started showing R and X-rated films, causing some problems. The venue was closed for good in 1982. 

The property stood empty until 1997 when the Rev. Harold Nelson was able to acquire the property to build a new church. The structures were all razed and, in 1998, The New Hope Baptist Church was built. 

The second photo shows the building at 4815 E. 4th &amp; Obee Rd. today, still the New Hope Baptist Church, with Brian Lee the pastor now.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 15

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The USD 308 Board of Education is accepting applications from community members who would like to be considered for the vacant board member position. 

The board member appointed to fill the vacancy will serve from June 12, 2023 through Jan. 8, 2024. 

The school board will review all applications and select candidates to interview. Selected candidates will be interviewed at the June 12 Board of Education meeting. Applicants must be present to be considered.

“We encourage all community members who are passionate about education and committed to our schools to consider applying for this important position,” Kail Denison, USD 308 Board of Education president, said.

The school board is responsible for governing the district and ensuring that schools provide the best possible education for students. As a member of the school board, this individual will have the opportunity to shape policies, advocate for students and schools, and work with educators, staff, and community members to achieve USD 308’s goals.&nbsp;

Applications are available at the USD 308 Administration Center or may be requested by email from <a href="mailto:brownj@usd308.com">brownj@usd308.com</a>.

Give feedback on the future of Downtown Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional's first DAISY Nursing Award was presented Wednesday at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center to Lynsi Giles, a registered nurse at the hospital. The intent is to give the award out each month, as they receive nominations.

The award, which recognizes extraordinary nurses who go above and beyond to provide exceptional patient care, is presented monthly to nurses across the country.

The DAISY Nursing Award is part of the DAISY Foundation, a non-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 from complications of the autoimmune disease idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The foundation's mission is to honor the compassionate care that Barnes received from his nurses and to recognize the extraordinary work that nurses do every day.

Each month, a nurse will be selected by a committee of nurses at Hutchinson Regional to receive The DAISY Award. At a presentation given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors, the honoree will receive a certificate commending him or her for being an “Extraordinary Nurse.” The honoree will also be given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.

"Lynsi is an exceptional nurse who embodies the values of the DAISY Foundation," said Jonna Jenkins, chief nursing officer. "Her dedication to patient care is unparalleled, and she consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that her patients receive the best possible care."

The adult child of married patients wrote about his family’s experience with Lyndsi.

&nbsp;“Both of my parents were sick the first week of March. Dad was admitted to the hospital on March 5, and Mom was admitted on March 6,&nbsp; the same day Dad was transferred to Hospice House due to his quickly deteriorating condition. My mom’s nurse, Lynsi, called me to see if I would approve a special visit for Mom to go visit Dad at the Hospice House, which I of course approved. Lyndsi arranged the visit and Mom was able to spend time with Dad before he passed three hours later. We can never measure how much this meant to not only them, but our entire family.”

The DAISY Nursing Award is open to all licensed nurses, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nurse practitioners. Nominees are evaluated based on their commitment to patient care, clinical expertise, and interpersonal skills.

KINGMAN COUNTY — Two suspects involved in a three county chase over the weekend remain jailed in Kingman County, according to online jail records.

Just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities in Kingman County learned of a chase coming into their county from Pratt County, according to Sheriff Brent Wood. 

The suspects had fled a Kansas Highway Patrol attempted traffic stop for alleged reckless driving in Kiowa County on U.S. 54, east of Greensburg.

 A Kingman County Sheriff's deputy located the vehicle, which continued to flee.&nbsp;

The suspect vehicle struck a Kingman County Sheriff's Office vehicle in an attempt to elude capture. Both the suspect vehicle and a Kingman County Sheriff's vehicle caught fire during the pursuit.&nbsp;

One suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Graham Green was caught around 6:52 p.m. Authorities caught the second suspect 23-year-old Graesen Jackson was caught around 8:05 p.m. Both men are from Illinois.

Both suspects received treatment in Kingman and then were transferred to Via Christi St. Francis before being released to law enforcement.&nbsp;The deputy was checked out by medical personnel at the Kingman Health Center and released.

Suspects from Illinois remain jailed in Kansas after 3 county chase

MANHATTAN — Each year Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) Foundation for Agriculture awards scholarships to college students studying in fields that benefit agriculture and rural Kansas. Forty-three recipients were awarded $25,500 in scholarships for the 2023-24 school year. Over the past decade, the foundation has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships. “We’re investing in students today to ensure they become tomorrow’s leaders,” says KFB President and Foundation Chair Joe Newland. Logan Elliott, Cherokee County, was awarded $1,000 for the Frank and Helen Bernasek Memorial Scholarship, a permanent, privately endowed scholarship fund. Shelby Spreier, Harvey County, was awarded $1,000 for the K-State Agricultural Communications and Journalism Scholarship. Morgan Barba, Ellis County, is the winner of the $500 Godfrey and Emma Bahr-Miller Memorial Scholarship, a permanent, privately endowed scholarship fund for students attending a college in Kansas and majoring in a subject related to agriculture. Caleb Stout, Chase County, was awarded $500 for the DeWitt Ahlerich Memorial Scholarship, a permanent, privately endowed scholarship fund. KFB's Foundation for Agriculture awards $25,500 in scholarships

NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting, the City Commission approved a real estate option contract with K&amp;O Railroad’s parent company, WATCO, for the sale of about 23 acres of property in the Kansas Logistics Park.

The contract grants WATCO the option to purchase the property for $15,000 per acre. The cost of the option is $15,000, which will be applied toward the purchase price if WATCO decides to exercise the option.

K&amp;O General Manager Loren Bradford said the company had been working with the City and Harvey County Economic Development for many years on the Kansas Logistics Park, but the railroad is constrained in serving the park because of a lack of track and switching space in Newton.

“In order to service the park with the anticipated potential growth that we see for the area, we’re trying to be proactive, get out ahead of that and secure some land that we might be able to build a yard in that would then participate and support any economic development opportunities in the park,” Bradford said.

WATCO expects to be able to build a yard with capacity for 120-200 rail cars on the property, with the ability to serve current and future development in the park. The property is located between SE Ninth and SE 12th streets, west of Hillside and just north of the anticipated future site of GAF Materials’ new manufacturing facility.

WATCO has until Sept. 30 to exercise its option on the property.

Newton City Commission approves land option for future railyard

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Administrator Randy Partington said that Reno County and the City of Hutchinson have agreed on a joint meeting date.

"We're looking at the joint meeting, the date would be May 23," Partington said Tuesday. "Last meeting, we talked about some possible dates and I received an email from City Manager Kendal Francis that May 23 should work. We'll just have to figure out the time and location, but that is the day of a normal county commission meeting."

Commissioner Randy Parks asked about Chairman Daniel Friesen's effort to get the city and Buhler USD 313 on the same page about Lucille north of 30th and Friesen would like to see the meeting happen at Prairie Hills if they can get the logistics worked out.

"That's a joint meeting, not a study session," Partington said. "That's one that's not going to be televised, unless you guys say that we need to do it. That wouldn't be my recommendation on that meeting."

The concern is that since one side is a township road and the other is in the City limits, figuring out who would pay for any improvements, if they were decided upon, would be difficult.

The official time for the joint meeting on May 23 has not yet been set.

Friesen trying to get joint meeting at PHMS

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) will present their Spring Fling Concert, the final show of their season at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on Friday, April 28. &nbsp;

The HutchCC Wind Symphony directed by Eric Stambaugh, and the Hutchinson Community Chorale directed by Neal Allsup are set to take the stage with an amazing performance. &nbsp;

“It's new stuff since it's our last concert of the year,” Allsup said. “It might just be a little bit lighter in content, not the amount, but just in the music itself. But, it’s stuff that we’ve worked on since our last concert. &nbsp;

The concert will showcase a wide variety of performances from highly classical to maybe even madrigal.&nbsp;

“We're singing seven pieces on there and then we're combining with the band on one piece,” Allsup said. “It’s from a film and it’s a tribute to American fallen soldiers.” &nbsp;

The conjunction piece is called Hymn to the Fallen, and is taken from the movie, “Saving Private Ryan.” &nbsp;

Under the direction of Eric Stambaugh, another&nbsp;of the band’s pieces will bring an auxiliary percussion assortment resembling the sound of helicopters. &nbsp;

Around 30 students will be performing in the chorale. &nbsp;

For those graduating students moving on, Allsup said the program will miss them. &nbsp;

“We thank them for all the wonderful hours of care and&nbsp;working towards the level of artistry, that I think for community colleges in the state of Kansas, is way above average,” Allsup said. “I know that if their plans include moving on as a singing musician, that they've been prepared well to understand the kind of work that it takes to produce outstanding and interesting vibrant art in the choral and the vocal field.”&nbsp;

The Spring Fling Concert will start at 7 p.m., according to Allsup, it will run for up to an hour and a half. &nbsp;

The show will take place in the B.J. Warner Recital Hall at the Stringer Fine Arts Center located at 600 E. 11th Ave. in Hutchinson. &nbsp;

 </figure>By JUDD WEIL&nbsp; Hutch PostHUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) will present their Spring Fling Concert, the final show of their season at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on Friday, April 28. &nbsp;The HutchCC Wind Symphony directed by Eric Stambaugh, and the Hutchinson Community Chorale directed by Neal Allsup are set to take the stage with an amazing performance. &nbsp;“It's new stuff since it's our last concert of the year,” Allsup said. “It might just be a little bit lighter in content, not the amount, but just in the music itself. But, it’s stuff that we’ve worked on since our last concert. &nbsp;The concert will showcase a wide variety of performances from highly classical to maybe even madrigal.&nbsp;“We're singing seven pieces on there and then we're combining with the band on one piece,” Allsup said. “It’s from a film and it’s a tribute to American fallen soldiers.” &nbsp;The conjunction piece is called Hymn to the Fallen, and is taken from the movie, “Saving Private Ryan.” &nbsp;Under the direction of Eric Stambaugh, another&nbsp;of the band’s pieces will bring an auxiliary percussion assortment resembling the sound of helicopters. &nbsp;Around 30 students will be performing in the chorale. &nbsp;For those graduating students moving on, Allsup said the program will miss them. &nbsp;“We thank them for all the wonderful hours of care and&nbsp;working towards the level of artistry, that I think for community colleges in the state of Kansas, is way above average,” Allsup said. “I know that if their plans include moving on as a singing musician, that they've been prepared well to understand the kind of work that it takes to produce outstanding and interesting vibrant art in the choral and the vocal field.”&nbsp;The Spring Fling Concert will start at 7 p.m., according to Allsup, it will run for up to an hour and a half. &nbsp;The show will take place in the B.J. NEWTON, Kan. — For Newton USD 373 families, registration information for 2023-2024 is available in each family&nbsp;<a href="https://newtonks.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/parents/newton.jsp?status=login" target="_blank">parent portal account</a>.

If you are a parent/guardian of a returning student and need to enroll a new student for any grade level, you can follow the instructions available in the online application process to add your new student. If you need help with your parent portal please contact your student's school office during business hours.

All returning families should submit their 2023-24 application by May 25, 2023.&nbsp;

Less than a month for USD 373 families to confirm next year's registration

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) released its quarterly earnings report for 1Q and it was good news again for the oilseed company.

Q1 2023 Earnings Per Share as reported of $2.12 includes a $0.01 per share charge related to impairments and restructuring; a $0.01 per share gain related to the mark-to-market adjustment on the Wilmar exchangeable bond; and a $0.03 per share tax benefit related to certain discrete items. Adjusted EPS, which excludes these items, was $2.09.

Segment operating profit of $1.7 billion for the quarter includes charges of $7 million ($0.01 per share) related to impairments and restructuring and gains of $1 million ($0.00 per share) related to the sale of certain assets.

Locally, ADM operates five elevators in Hutchinson, employing around 65 workers.
