HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A commercial sprinkler system saved some work for Hutchinson firefighters Thursday night.

Firefighters were called to Uptown Hutch at 1500 East 11th at 9:34 p.m. for a commercial fire alarm.

There was no smoke showing outside the Ulta Beauty store when they arrived, but crews went into the building and went back to the back storage room where they found smoke.

The crew on scene pulled a line to the back of the store, but the fire had triggered the sprinklers and was out before crews got there.&nbsp;

Firefighters shut the sprinklers off and got the smoke and water out of the store.

Minor fire damage was done to the store. The fire is under investigation.

Reno County Emergency Communication and Reno County Emergency Management gave support to firefighters on this call.

Hutchinson Fire at Uptown Hutch Thursday night

YODER, Kan. — According to a letter sent out by Yoder Charter School principal Shannon Atherton, he would like to invite those interested in helping the school to a meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the school.

There will be a public hearing on the future of the Haven district March 6 at 6 p.m. in front of the Board of Education.

Atherton said, "The board is looking at options to restructure the district and potentially Yoder Charter School."

Ice cream sandwiches will be provided at the conversation as the community comes together to decide how to best present Yoder Charter School's value to the board.

Atherton said that even if you have a scheduling conflict with the Ice Cream Conversation, plan to attend the board meeting March 6.&nbsp;

"If you're not comfortable speaking in public, written comments will be accepted," Atherton said. "Let's fill the room in support of Yoder Charter School."

Annual otter birthday event Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson and Reno County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 1 for Xpress Wellness Urgent Care’s new pediatric room.&nbsp;

“We converted one of our exam rooms into a pediatric room with a space theme,” Cara Conaway, Xpress Wellness Area Manager, said. “We wanted to create an atmosphere where kids not only felt comfortable, but could also be entertained while they waited. We hope they feel right at home in the home of the Cosmosphere.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Everyone on the Xpress Wellness team worked on the space-themed room in some form of service, including giving the walls a fresh coat of paint with some kooky and galactic details.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Provider Courtney Rose painted and free handed the aliens. Ashlie Sowers painted the rocket ships. Esther Cruz put the interactive toys together as well as helped with the placement of the planets. Gina Parker helped with taping off the room and ordering supplies. Conaway guided the team, painted, and shopped for supplies.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The room is also outfitted with projection lights to simulate stars and nebulas, perfectly in theme. &nbsp;

“Moms have enough to worry about. Our goal is to help make their visit to the clinic a bit easier and provide some entertainment for kids while they receive care,” Steven Hull, Chief Operating Officer at Xpress Wellness/Integrity Urgent Care, said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Conway, Xpress Wellness strives for a more personalized form of care and believes&nbsp;the Hutchinson office’s new pediatric room reflects that. &nbsp;

“It isn’t uncommon for parents to come through our doors worn out physically and emotionally from caring for their kids,” said Taylor Wondra, Xpress Wellness provider. “Having something to look at and do while they wait will help take their minds off the reason they are here.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Conway said they were given a budget of $500 to make the room, and happily added that Xpress Wellness in Hutchinson was under budget for their room. &nbsp;

The pediatric room is part of a contest between other Xpress Wellness branches. Each were given the same amount of money to use to put together a new pediatric room.&nbsp;

“This new room is an exciting step in our continued journey to provide quality care for children and families in our community,” Xpress Wellness CEO Grant Asay said. “We hope the pediatric room enhances the patient experience while our teams address the needs of families who want high-quality care in a child-friendly environment.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

From injuries to illness and other medical concerns, Xpress Wellness Urgent Care aims to treat immediate health care needs as quickly as possible to every member of the community.&nbsp;&nbsp;

JumpStart opening new store in Hutchinson

RENO COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 10a.m. Thursday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Chevy Silverado driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Bryon Michael Young, 27, Hutchinson, was eastbound on K96 three miles east of Haven.

The pickup rear-ended a 2013 Peterbilt semi driven by Robert Francis&nbsp;Heimerman, 57, Conway Springs., who slowed to make a right turn onto Worthington Road.

A passenger in the pickup identified as Brian Lee&nbsp;Garza, 43, Hutchinson, was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported young to&nbsp;Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Heimerman was not injured. The KHP had incomplete seatbelt usage information.

HAVEN, Kan. — Eastbound K-96 was closed east of Haven due to a fatal accident involving a truck and a semi near K-96 and Worthington on Feb. 23. 

According to Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) Lt. Aaron McGuire, the KHP were called about 10 a.m. to the site. 

Lt. McGuire said the semi was eastbound and attempting to make a turn on to southbound Worthington as a truck was driving behind it. 

The truck behind the semi did not slow down enough and struck the rear of the semi. 

A passenger in the truck died. The driver was taken to a local hospital. 

The driver of the semi was not hurt badly enough to transport.

Hutchinson man dies after pickup rear-ends semi on K-96

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz said the five focus group sessions on the Bison Arena project went well.

"We are just getting the results back from that," Schulz said. "The 50-plus people that we had at the focus groups were just ecstatic about the program and the project coming out. What we're doing, as soon as we get that back, we'll be presenting that to the board and then also going through our structural analysis of the building."

It appears that the building is structurally sound.

"Our architects have said that it is in very good condition," Schulz said. "Obviously, being that old of a building, there are going to be some things that are going to have to be done, but overall, the building is in great shape. We just now start to put the inside together, what it's going to look like."

The state plans to chip in $10 million in an appropriation. The fair is looking for private funding for the other half.

"We have been told anywhere from $16 million to $20 million is what it's going to cost. We obviously are going to be going closer to that $20 million, just to make sure we've got some money in a fund that we can make sure that, if something goes wrong in the future, we've got that and then also to help bring in some additional staffing and stuff, as well."

Schulz wants to make clear that individual projects like this one do receive funding from the Legislature, but the year to year appropriation from the state is relatively small for ongoing maintenance and that's why private funding is always sought in these cases, too.

Nickerson pet registration date March 4

UPDATE:&nbsp; HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department (HFD) responded to a locomotive fire near 8th Ave. and Keast St. on Feb. 23.&nbsp; &nbsp;

According to HFD, the lead engine’s motor caught fire.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Engineers on the locomotive were able to extinguish the fire before fire crews arrived.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Fire crews noticed engine oil running out of the locomotive.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The HFD Hazmat team arrived on scene and placed a catch basin under the leak so the oil would not contaminate the ground soil.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The rail company is working on moving the train cars, while the railway hazmat crew is on their way to offload the remaining oil from the locomotive.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The Hutchinson Fire department would like to thank the following agencies for their support in this incident, Reno Co Emergency Communication, Hutchinson Police Department, Reno County Emergency management,” HFD said in a release about the incident. &nbsp;

Train fire closes Hutchinson streets Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;A student at Hutchinson High School was involved in a minor accident on Feb. 23.

Thursday morning, a HHS junior was hit by a vehicle as they were using a crosswalk in front of the school. 

Emergency services were called to the scene.&nbsp;

Both student and driver were able to walk away from the scene. EMTs evaluated the student and released them to a guardian.

Hutchinson High School student hit by car

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Hutchinson and Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel said she understood the layoff numbers at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center to be consistent with the numbers provided to Hutch Post.

"Most of those 85 to 100 employees that were receiving notice were non clinical facing," Teufel said. "What that tells us is, while they could go to work in another healthcare institution, they really could go to work for anyone here in Reno County that might be hiring."

The Chamber provided resources to the people that were laid off.

"There was anything from kind of the top 30 employers that are hiring, as well as a list of about 55 other healthcare institutions across Reno County that may or may not have jobs open right now, but if they are wanting to be reemployed in healthcare, as a whole, healthcare is our largest sector."

Teufel is still confident in the strength of that sector as it relates to being competitive in the industry site selection process, but hospital care is facing challenges everywhere.

"Hospitals across our state are struggling," Teufel said. "One of the things I have heard is 50% of our hospitals in Kansas are struggling financially right now. Ours was not alone, but I have to applaud the board and the management for trying to figure out a solution that puts them back on solid footing."

Teufel said they are still trying to decide if a specific hospital-related job fair may be warranted in the coming weeks.

Teufel: Hospital layoffs prompt Chamber action

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The final hoop to be jumped through for the sale of the Obee school property was dealt with by the Hutchinson City Council at its meeting Tuesday, as they leased the portion of the school property that they were not allowed to sell to the entity that bought the school from USD 313.

"When it was expanded in the late 1970s, early 80s, they built right up along the property line between the Hutchinson Airport and the property owned by USD 313," said Airport Manager Pieter Miller. "Quite literally, when walking out the back door, they were walking on to airport property. That was where the playgrounds were, there were some outbuildings out there and different things that they had. When they stopped using the school, they marketed the school for sale. To make that school more marketable for somebody that wanted to potentially buy it, they asked if there was any way they could include portions of that playground, so that they weren't walking on to an airport, technically, when they walk out the back door."

Like anything related to federal regulations, that isn't as simple as it might seem.

"There's a section of that portion that is part of what is called a Runway Protection Zone," Miller said. "That's property that is set aside off of all of our runways to protect, basically protect people on the ground. The FAA has a lot of pretty specific rules about what can and can't take place in the Runway Protection Zones. We weren't allowed to sell that, kind of obviously, since we already owned it, or even sell a portion of the property that is adjacent to it. That means we had to take a section of that area that we wanted to originally sell and actually just come up with a lease."

The Hutchinson City Council approved the land lease between Reno County Property LLC and the City of Hutchinson for $450 per year for the first five years, with $50 per year escalators if the lease is renewed for up to two additional five year terms.

Obee school airport land lease agreement approved

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the Southwest corner of West Avenue C and South Adams Street. 

In 1904, Hutchinson decided it needed to get into the Minor League Baseball business. The city decided to build a baseball park that could accommodate the larger crowds that a minor league team would need. 

The Hutchinson Athletic Park opened in June of 1905 at Avenue C &amp; Adams. They joined the Western Association and, on July 12 of 1906, the St. Joseph Packers moved here to become The Hutchinson Salt Packers, with W.F. Cook assuming the role of field manager. The first photo (taken by Sam Hirst) shows that ballpark. 

The 1907 Salt Packers were a special team, managed by Jay A. (Doc) Andrews. He landed 17-year-old pitcher Howard Ellsworth (Smoky Joe) Wood. Smoky Joe had a blazing fastball. 

The second photo shows the 1907 Salt Packers team. 

The Salt Packers went 18-11 in their 29 games that year. Smoky Joe caught the attention of the Boston Red Sox . He was immediately moved to the Kansas City Triple-A affiliate and then was with Boston to start the 1908 season. Smoky Joe was one of only 13 pitchers to win 30 or more games in a single season (going 34-5 in 1912) since 1900. Walter Johnson once said, "There is no man alive that can throw harder than Smoky Joe Wood."

 After 1911, baseball was moved to the Carey Park location. The old stadium was razed and, about 1935, a large warehouse was constructed on the property. 

About 1950, the Rudy Patrick Seed Co. formed at this location. In 1973, The Greenbush Seed &amp; Supply purchased the Rudy Patrick location and has been there ever since.

 </figure>The 1907 Salt Packers were a special team, managed by Jay A. (Doc) Andrews. He landed 17-year-old pitcher Howard Ellsworth (Smoky Joe) Wood. Smoky Joe had a blazing fastball. The second photo shows the 1907 Salt Packers team. <figure>

 </figure>The Salt Packers went 18-11 in their 29 games that year. Smoky Joe caught the attention of the Boston Red Sox . He was immediately moved to the Kansas City Triple-A affiliate and then was with Boston to start the 1908 season. Smoky Joe was one of only 13 pitchers to win 30 or more games in a single season (going 34-5 in 1912) since 1900. Walter Johnson once said, "There is no man alive that can throw harder than Smoky Joe Wood." After 1911, baseball was moved to the Carey Park location. The old stadium was razed and, about 1935, a large warehouse was constructed on the property. About 1950, the Rudy Patrick Seed Co. formed at this location. In 1973, The Greenbush Seed &amp; Supply purchased the Rudy Patrick location and has been there ever since. The third photo shows the property today, still owned by the Greenbush Seed and Supply Co. of Parsons.<figure>

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A local contractor's bid was approved for a pair of resurfacing projects along K-61 in Hutchinson by the Hutchinson City Council at their Tuesday meeting.

"The City applied for the&nbsp;CCLIP program with the state a couple of years in a row," said Jeff Schenk with Engineering. "We were awarded on July 15, 2020 and July 19, 2021, two separate projects. One of them was to redo the 17th and 61 intersection. The participating part is the section inside of the state right of way. Then, we were also going to extend onto 17th, which was done the last time we did this project, which will extend from Waldron Street to the railroad tracks just east of Walmart. That section is considered non-participating. We cover all of that, but it's bid at the same time. It comes out of our arterial budget. We were awarded that one. The second one is doing northbound only K-61 from US 50 to Avenue G and then the Avenue G and K-61 intersection."

Only the northbound side of that project was done to maximize the state match. They will attempt later this year to get matching funds for the same section heading south. The City was allowed to combine the projects and tried to bid it last summer, but only got one bid, so they then rebid the project and the low bid of the two they got the second time around was from APAC Kansas in the amount of $1,134,249.60.

"This will be funded partially out of our CCLIP reserve, the arterial reserve," Schenk said. "There is a little bit of short funds, just because the bids were just a little bit over the engineer's estimate, which meant just a little bit over the $600,000 that KDOT will reimburse us. We have to cover that, that we are short on our CCLIP reserve, which is about $8000. That will come out of the arterial reserve, as well."

KDOT agreed with the staff recommendation and the council's decision.

APAC bid on K-61 projects approved

LINDSBORG, Kan. — The fifth Big Rural Brainstorm will take place in downtown Lindsborg April 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the J.O. Sundstrom Conference Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Big Rural Brainstorm is an “un-conference” that brings together Kansans from every corner of the state who want to make a difference where they live. It’s a day of fast-paced facilitated sessions, in big groups and in small groups, located in creative spaces spread throughout downtown Lindsborg, that prompt discussion and thinking about new ways to work on things rural Kansas cares about.

The Kansas Sampler Foundation is a 501(c) non-profit organization based near Inman. The Foundation develops programs and opportunities to support rural Kansas.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Plum Creek Elementary was briefly on lockdown Wednesday afternoon while the Reno County Sheriff's Office investigated a report of an armed person in the area. 

According to a social media report from the Sheriff's Office, a caller stated a male was in possession of a rifle and was walking in a wooded area on property between 43rd and 56th on Plum.&nbsp;

Deputies detained the person and the lockdown was lifted. 

According to USD 313, the lockdown was from 2:55 to 3:10 p.m. Wednesday. Students were dismissed on time at 3:15 p.m.

The social media report was unclear as to whether the person was legally carrying the weapon or not, as detention does not imply whether or not the action was legal. 

In Kansas, guns, including rifles, can be carried legally, as long as no other crime is being committed and the person carrying has not committed a previous offense whose punishment includes the prohibition from carrying firearms.&nbsp;

Sheriff Darrian Campbell later issued some clarifying comments that indicated that the detention was because of an emotional situation and that the firearm was discharged in order to instill fear as part of the initial situation, which caused the deputies responding to take more abrupt action than they otherwise might have.
