HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Saturday, February 25, 2023, the Hutchinson Fire Department held its annual awards banquet at the Hutchinson Fire Department Training Center to recognize some outstanding achievements in 2022.

Department officers submitted recommendations of various awards for outstanding service in 2022.

Rookie of the Year was presented to Zach Davis, EMT of the Year was presented to Adam Gehring, Fire Fighter of the Year was presented to Tim Mans, Officer of the Year was presented to Captain Jason Webb, and the Fire Chiefs Award was presented to Drivers Chris Parsons and Ron Kaufman.

In addition, members were recognized for being members of specialty teams that included technical rescue, hazardous materials, and fire investigators. Numerous company citations and awards of merit were also given out that evening.

Several Letters of Appreciation were presented for assisting the Hutchinson Fire Department in 2022.

These were presented to Adam Weishaar, Reno County Emergency Management, and Rodney Redinger of the Kansas Forest Service.

Fire awards handed out

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education will take a look at a proposed 2023-2024 calendar at its meeting Monday night.

"Lynette Krieger-Zook, the president of Hutchinson NEA, is the co-leader of this team with me," said Deputy Superintendent for USD 308, Krystal Young. "We have a group of teachers that work together to put our calendar together."

There was a change proposed as a result of the length of winter break this year. They want to make it shorter.

"We went to our staff and parents and asked for some input on winter break," Young said. "We had heard some things about winter break being too long. We were lucky enough that, honestly, if we had an opportunity to cut winter break by a few days, we're actually going to get out of school on May 17, which we have not seen for years."

If approved, the calendar has K-9 starting on Aug. 16, 2023 with 10-12 on Aug. 17. The calendar will be considered by the board at their meeting that starts at Monday at&nbsp;6 p.m. in the Administration Center, 1520 N. Plum.

308 Board to look at calendar Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson and Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel told Hutch Post that the Downtown Hutch&nbsp; planning process is a public-private partnership.

"It became evident a few years ago that we really need a master plan," Teufel said. "An expert to come in and look from an architectural and land use and planning perspective, what's next?"

Downtown stakeholders started raising money for that effort.

"We hired a firm, Olsson Studios," Teufel said. "That would not have been possible without community partners. Laura Meyer-Dick and others that she went to, to help raise funds, raised half of the funding for this downtown master plan process. With that funding, we went to the city and said, if we can raise the private sector dollars, will you match us dollar for dollar to help with the plan? Ultimately, the city of Hutchinson will be the beneficiary, as we further develop downtown and raise property values, it's going to generate property tax and sales tax for the city. They absolutely were all in on the plan."

The downtown area is already seeing some movement, with new ownership getting ready to sign for the Landmark Building, though the name of those owners hasn't been announced, there's also the continuing work at the Hoke and the intent to find other innovative uses for the spaces between 4th and Avenue B or C along Main and a few blocks radius in that general area.

"Ken Boone is the principal we're working with there," Teufel said. "He has a team, including Vivian Fung and some others, who have already been to Hutchinson. They took a walk around Hutchinson with us in October and November, they sent an economist that they work with, they are putting together kind of the basis of the plan, but the visioning session is the first opportunity for the community to talk about what they want to see for downtown."

Teufel: Downtown Master Plan is public-private partnership

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann said that the Biden Administration hasn't released its 2024 budget yet, but his office will be paying attention when it does.

"That's been very frustrating that they've been slow in releasing their budget," Mann said. "It should come out any time now. Once it does, we'll parse through it and see what that looks like. Repeatedly, the last couple of years, the Biden Administration, in their budget, has been trying to do away with the stepped up basis, which would be really bad for agriculture and the ability to pass farmland from one generation to the next. In their budget is not just spending, but it's the revenue side, as well. We'll be going through it, once they release it."

The hope is that with Republicans in control in the House, where budget bills are supposed to start, that they will be able to get back to regular order and actually pass the budget bills one at a time with scrutiny, as it is intended.

"Every department, Department of Agriculture, Homeland Security, Defense, etc., they have to come forward with their budget, it goes to a committee, gets vetted, gets thinned down, should be gone through line by line, passed to the floor of the House and then, eventually passes, and that should happen 12 separate times."

That's not how it has been for the last several years.

"That doesn't happen," Mann said. "Congress doesn't do its job. Instead, all 12 bills get lumped together in this massive package that's called an omnibus, omni meaning many, these many bills get put together and jammed through. It's no way to do business. It's led to more spending than we need. We're returning to regular order, but the first start in that process, to your point, is the administration putting forward their budget for each of these departments and they need to get it to us, so we can get to work on it."

Last year, the information came out on March 28.

Mann: Don't know budget yet, but need to pay attention

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Curtis Nightingale with USD 309 told Hutch Post that the district has decided not to make moving the sixth grade out of the elementary schools an emphasis in their upcoming bond.

"The issue became that the cost to move the sixth grade ended up kind of becoming the focal point of the bond, because it was the highest priced ticket item, although it wasn't our priority," Nightingale said. "It was the highest priced ticket item and I think, as the board members started to have communication in the community, that was one of the questions that came up, was, is that really our number one goal? Is that our focus? It really wasn't."

The issue that prompted the thought is the continuing difficulties with fitting everyone in, particularly at South Hutchinson Elementary.

"What we're going to do instead is build an addition," Nightingale said. "We've got the space at South Hutch. It would be to build two additional classrooms on to South Hutch. What that will do, it will give us an opportunity to reformat how the building is set up and help to ease some of that."

The overall size of the bond is still at $7.6 million, just with different projects at the top.

"By removing that, it did free up money to allow us to do some other things and still get many of the things that you and I talked about previously accomplished," Nightingale said. "That included safety in our buildings, roofing, get that auditorium done. We also had a three year plan to do the science renovations out of our capital outlay. That would be a three year phase process, but if this bond were to pass, we could do it just all at one time."

The bond election is set for May 16. Voter registration closes April 25. Advance voting by mail begins April 26. Early In-Person voting at the Reno County Annex begins May 8.&nbsp;

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Market South Hutch Business of the Month is Hot Rod Resurrections.

Daniel Lizalde became interested in the auto industry many years ago thanks to his dad, Alex, who owns Alex's Body Shop in South Hutch.&nbsp;

"I've been working with my father for the past 20 years right next door," Lizalde said. "He's a staple here in South Hutch."

Lizalde decided he wanted to open up his own shop and do so right next to his dad's business. Lizalde and a couple of buddies built a 40-foot by 60-foot shop at 123 S. Main Street. Hot Rod Resurrections opened in April of 2022.

"This idea has been like 10 years in the making," Lizalde said. "I've always dreamed of having my own business, and to be able to have it right next to my dad really means a lot to me."

Hot Rod Resurrections does everything paint and body, but does not handle mechanical, electrical or interior work. They do restorations, insurance work, hail damage and rust repair.

Now for the name "Hot Rod Resurrections" it was an easy choice.

"My vision for 'Hot Rod Resurrections' was to be able to resurrect the vehicles and bring them back to life," Lizalde said. 

The business for Lizalde has not slowed down whatsoever since the grand opening last April.

"Once I put a sign up outside that said 'Hot Rod' people came out," Lizalde said. "We're working on quite a few right now and have quite a few lined up for the next six to eight months."

Lizalde spends 10-12 hours per day in his shop, working six days most weeks. Lizalde can't do it all himself, as his friend Isaac helps complete the two-man show.

"I spend a lot of hours in the shop," Lizalde said. "A lot of blood, sweat and tears have happened in this place, but I wouldn't change it for anything."

The clients don't just come from South Hutch, Hutch, or the surrounding areas.

"A majority of my clients are from the area," Lizalde said. "However a lot of them come from out of town and even out of state."

Lizalde doesn't shy away from recognizing the work that he and Isaac do, especially when he sees a car that he has restored or painted out and about, or even at car shows.

"It's the best feeling," he said. "The main reason why I do this, is because it's fulfilling other peoples dreams. I'm working on a '63 Nova that was this guy's mother's car, and she passed away back in August, so he wanted to get it restored in memory of his mother. That means the world to me that he trusts me to create this."

Although the shop is currently full with vehicles and there are quite a few on the list to come next, Lizalde looks forward to the projects that are still ahead.

"I can come out to you and give you an estimate, or you can bring in what you want and I'd be happy to look at it," Lizalde said.

Lizalde is very grateful for being named the Business of the Month by Market South Hutch.

"It's an awesome feeling," Lizalde said. "It kind of gives me some validation of what all I've accomplished in such a short time. It's truly like a pat on the back and means a lot to me. I try do shop local as much as I can and to be able to have a business here in South Hutch, right next to my dad and here on Main Street is truly special."

Hot Rod Resurrections is Market South Hutch Business of the Month

HAVEN, Kan. — Haven USD 312 is doing some strategic planning and has held two meetings in that regard already. For Haven High School Prinicipal Jared Kirkpatrick, from his seat, the discussions have thus far gone well.

"The board is very grateful for that, because they got a lot of great feedback," Kirkpatrick said. "It's interesting. Our district spans a pretty big area and everyone has different opinions. I know the board valued that time."

Kirkpatrick believes support continues with the board to find ways to help every Haven High student succeed.

"I know we are constantly trying to maintain and add CTE pathways to give our students as many career opportunities and career explorations as possible. We hope to maintain those, and hopefully the board will continue to support us in that endeavor. Strategic planning, facilities always comes up. I know our board has in the past and I know in the present is very dedicated to updating and maintaining facilities, whether that be on the academic side of things or the activities side."

There will be an additional meeting in that regard with the Board of Education on March 6, as they look at some decisions for the coming year.

Haven USD 312 trying to figure out its future

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Krystal Young with USD 308 is hoping for guidance from the steering committee over the next year as to what they want to see the district do with its facilities.

"It's about where we are overall with enrollment," Young said. "It's also about how we can best serve our students. We have done what we've done in Hutchinson forever, because that's what we've done. There are many school districts across the state that are configured in different ways. I think there's an opportunity for the committee to come together and talk about what our needs are."

Any changes are on the table, as each school district in the state has its own recipe for how to split things up and use the facilities they have.

"We have neighborhood buildings," Young said. "If you go to some districts not too far from us, you'll see that they have grade banded buildings. They might have two K-3 buildings or two K-2 buildings. Really, we want our committee to know everything that they could possibly know about our needs as a district and for our students and then help us make some decisions."

Part of the problem is unequal distribution of grade levels across the city.

"We have some split classes in our district," Young said. "That would mean I have one teacher teaching two grade levels in the same classroom. We have that right now because of enrollment. It's really difficult for us to have class sizes of 10 or 12 in one building and class sizes of 24 in another. We have found after one year, that is very difficult, to meet the needs of students, teach the standards for that grade level and still do all of the things that come with teaching."

The steering committee meets the second Monday of every month after the Board of Education meeting and will go through the district's buildings throughout the year-long project.

RENO COUNTY — A pickup collided with a semi Saturday afternoon in Reno County. The accident killed a man from Hudson.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, at 12:43 p.m. Saturday, a 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by 75-year-old Larry L. Christiansen of Hudson was northbound on Partridge Road when&nbsp;Christiansen failed to stop at the stop sign at K-61 and collided with a 2017 Freightliner semi driven by 30-year-old Kapil Dev Sharma of South Ozone Park, New York.

Christiansen died at the scene. Sharma was not injured. Both drivers were buckled up.

Hudson man dies in wreck in Reno County

UPDATE: Guns won over Axes 45-40 on Saturday, but the kids all won as $1100 was raised for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Below is a feature from Judd Weil on the game...

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson Police Department (HPD) and Hutchinson Fire Department (HFD) will show how a little friendly rivalry can do Big things on Saturday, Feb. 25, when they play each other in a fundraiser basketball game to benefit <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BBBSRenoCounty/">Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County</a>. &nbsp;

Billed as the first annual Guns-N-Axes benefit basketball game, it started with the Fraternal Order of Police, which Det. Jessica Kelly is part of. &nbsp;

“Me and a few other members decided to try and do something fun to get the community out and we just came up with the idea of hosting a basketball game and working with&nbsp;the fire department, which we usually work closely with anyways,” Kelly said.&nbsp; “We first came up with the idea of the basketball game and then decided an organization to donate half of the proceeds to. We have several officers that are Bigs in Blue&nbsp;and&nbsp;somebody suggested that we donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County, and&nbsp;everyone thought that was a good cause.” &nbsp;

The other half of the proceeds will stay with the Fraternal Order of Police to cover costs of the event. &nbsp;

“We are very happy to be the recipient,” Jo Mora, Area Manager of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County, said. “We happen to have a number of what we call Bigs in Blue, some of our Bigs are from the police department, so we were a natural organization for them to reach out to, I think.”&nbsp;

Mora said the funds raised from the benefit basketball game will be used to support Big Brothers Big Sisters match specialists. &nbsp;

A match specialist helps pair and support Bigs and their Littles in the program by helping them navigate their relationship and what they can do in their community together. &nbsp;

“We really appreciate the community support because it really takes the entire community to support these matches,” Mora said. “The volunteers, those Bigs, they can only do so much but without local businesses giving them discounts and without everybody being open to our program and helping us out, it wouldn't be able to happen or it&nbsp;happened on a much smaller scale.” &nbsp;

The relationship between a Big in Blue and a Little is valuable. &nbsp;

“As far as having our Bigs in Blue, that means everything to our kiddos,” Mora said. “They just adore them.” &nbsp;

As a Big in Blue&nbsp;playing in this benefit basketball game for Big Brothers Big Sisters of County means a lot to HPD officer Brayden Stewart. &nbsp;

“It means a lot. Big Brothers Big Sisters is enjoyable because you get paired up with a kid and you're able to interact with them and get to know and vice versa,” Stewart said. “I think it's cool to have that relationship and get to know them. You just have an impact on their life and and then having an impact on yours as well.”&nbsp;

Officer Stewart enjoys going to his Little’s school and sitting in class with them, as well as playing with them at recess. &nbsp;

The Guns-N-Axes&nbsp;benefit basketball game will be held at 1 p.m. in the north gym of Hutchinson High School at 810 E. 13th Avenue in Hutchinson.  &nbsp;

Entry is by&nbsp;donation and there will be refreshments. &nbsp;

At halftime, people will have the opportunity to pay a dollar to shoot a free throw at halftime to win a bottle of soda.&nbsp;

The first 100 people who attend the game will get to choose either a red or blue rally towel to support whichever department they want to. There are 50 red and 50 blue towels.

UPDATE WITH SCORE: Big Brothers Big Sisters gets $1100

SEDGWICK COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 3 p.m. Friday in Sedgwick County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Saturn Ion driven by Rebecca Shields, 26, Newton, was southbound on Interstate 135 just south of 101st Street. 

The Saturn crossed the median into the northbound lanes. A Peterbilt semi driven by Anthony Crane, 58, Bristol, Tennessee, struck the Saturn.

Shields was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the&nbsp;Forensic Science Center. Crane was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community Foundation awarded Fund for Reno County grants totaling $38,501 to six nonprofit organizations in January.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County serves as a permanent resource for the changing needs of Reno County. Grants represent an innovative approach or collaboration, a new efficiency, a critical need that requires funding or an opportunity that needs a bit of local support to leverage resources for the community.

Proposals for the grants are accepted year-round, with awards decided in January, March, May, July, September and November.

The following organizations received grants:

Alzheimer’s Association-Central &amp; Western Kansas chapter, “Alz CARES,” $5,000:&nbsp;Funding will help provide direct services, such as support groups, care consultations and community education, to over 1,220 individuals in Reno County.

Bluestem PACE-Hutchinson, “Leg Press Increased Accessibility,” $10,258: Bluestem PACE-Hutchinson, which works to help seniors maintain independence and enhance their quality of life, will use funding to purchase an Air-300 Leg Press and small compressor so Reno County participants have access to onsite weight training equipment for strengthening leg and pelvic floor muscles.

Emanuel Lutheran Church, “Bicycle Repair &amp; Share,” $750:&nbsp;Grant will support the continued work of Emanuel's growing mission to provide rebuilt bicycles to those who have no other form of transportation.

Faris Elementary School, “Building Better Learners through Bal-A-Vis-X,”&nbsp;$1,063:&nbsp;Funding will support the purchase of equipment for Bal-A-Vis-X exercises, which are designed to build concentration, stamina, cooperation, focus and self-regulation skills.

Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Reno County, “One-to-One Mentoring Program,” $6,430: Big Brothers Big Sisters aims to provide quarterly organized activities for their Bigs and Littles. The grant will purchase supplies and pay entry fees and other expenses associated with those activities and will also support the development of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ office community space, allowing it to be a free and appropriate spot for Bigs and Littles to spend time together.

Pretty Prairie United Methodist Church, “Childcare Entry,” $15,000:&nbsp;In preparation for starting a child care center in the building, Pretty Prairie United Methodist Church will use this grant, along with support from the congregation's building fund and money from the Great Plains UMC, to construct a new ground-level, ADA-compliant entrance. This grant is made from the Helen Adams Hamilton Children and Education Fund of Hutchinson Community Foundation.

Hutchinson Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy, collaboration and innovative leadership to strengthen Reno County communities. Since 1989, the foundation has granted more than $93 million to organizations.

The grant will purchase supplies and pay entry fees and other expenses associated with those activities and will also support the development of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ office community space, allowing it to be a free and appropriate spot for Bigs and Littles to spend time together.Pretty Prairie United Methodist Church, “Childcare Entry,” $15,000:&nbsp;In preparation for starting a child care center in the building, Pretty Prairie United Methodist Church will use this grant, along with support from the congregation's building fund and money from the Great Plains UMC, to construct a new ground-level, ADA-compliant entrance. They will also receive routine reports on the budget, income and water usage and approve public works wages and refuse rates for the city.

Buhler City Council meets Tuesday

NEWTON, Kan. — Newton residents will receive a letter and survey next week as part of the City’s “Get the Lead Out” initiative. 

Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced changes to drinking water regulations that impact all cities. The goal of these changes is to get the lead out of all water systems nationwide. 

Water suppliers are required to identify and submit an inventory of all materials used in the construction of the water system by Oct. 16, 2024. This includes water line materials used on both the public and the customer side of the water meter. So, the city needs help from residents.

The letter will include a survey to complete. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Krystal Young with USD 308 was doing a bunch of interviews this week to get the final few slots for teachers filled for the 2023-2024 school year.

"I check in with my team often, are we ahead, are we below, where are we?" Young said. "Really, we're right on track for where we've been in the past. It feels different, because we do have some really strong, veteran teachers that have been with Hutch for a long time retiring. While we want to wish them well in their retirement, we also know that will be hard."

Young had nine interviews scheduled in a single day this week.

"We've actually been really lucky to make some strong hires already, moving into next school year," Young said. "We currently have elementary positions available, one middle school position and then a high school position. Honestly, given the talk I have with my HR friends, we're doing pretty good. We have a total of nine openings."

The competition for teachers coming out of school is fierce. In fact, HCTEA has a track for students who may want to become teachers in an effort for Hutchinson to grow their own in the coming years.

USD 308 looking to fill next year's teaching jobs

NICKERSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Reno County Emergency Management requested help from hazmat teams from Reno County and Sedgwick County for a train leak along K-96 on Feb. 22. &nbsp;

At around 9:02 p.m. Wednesday, the railway company called from near Nickerson to report the leak.&nbsp;

Reno County Fire District # 3 was paged. They mobilized en route&nbsp;with an engine, two brush trucks, and a command vehicle.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Reno County Emergency Management also responded with two command vehicles.&nbsp;

Additionally, Reno County Emergency Management requested a hazmat team from Hutchinson and Sedgwick County late Wednesday night.&nbsp;

Crews left the scene of the incident shortly after 1 a.m. No other dangers were prevalent to the surrounding area. &nbsp;

According to Reno County Emergency Management, it is unknown what caused the leak. &nbsp;

Hazmat teams respond to train leak along K-96

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —  Hutchinson and Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel told Hutch Post this week that the process to get Atwoods open is waiting on supplies.

"I just reached out to their contractor," Teufel said. "What he told me was, they hoped they would have the AC units in to install by last week. Unfortunately, there are yet again more supply chain delays, and so the HVAC units won't be in until what he thinks is probably the first of April."

The contractor told Teufel they can't finish up until that's done.

"They have to have those installed before they can even get closer to opening," Teufel said. "We're looking at sometime past April, after the AC units come in."

The process of reconditioning the old KMart at 30th and Lorraine started last spring.
