HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Superior Boiler has been a part of Hutchinson for more than 100 years. The company started as a welding shop and quickly grew to the company it is today. The company just completed a major expansion last year with the relocation of its watertube boiler facility from Richmond, Virginia, to Hutchinson.

The company manufactures industrial watertube and flextube boilers, scotch marine and vertical firetube boilers for process steam, hot water and waste heat recovery, and high-efficiency hot water condensing boilers. In addition to boilers, Superior Boiler also manufactures boiler room equipment items and parts, and provides 24-hour service. Superior Boiler employs approximately 150 people at its Hutchinson locations.&nbsp;

The company is in a unique situation compared to most manufacturers. That’s because Superior Boiler still relies heavily on non-computer controlled welding. Many of the components on the products the company makes are hand welded. The need for such skilled labor is great.

The making of boilers is a long and complex task, whether it's a firetube boiler or a watertube system. For a firetube boiler, it starts with taking a solid sheet of steel and fabricating it into a large vessel. In the watertube area, it means fabricating tubes that will be carried inside a very large containment area. Both require dozens of steps.&nbsp;

Each boiler starts in a design room where space needs are determined. How the boiler is going to service the facility is also determined. The process is necessary because each boiler is handmade to fit into a particular space. Each boiler has its own book of instructions, blueprints and details of how it will be built. Each step is closely watched by a quality control person. 

Once each step is finished, it is signed off and even stamped onto the boiler. The book moves from step to step with the boiler throughout its manufacturing process. 

Because no two boilers are alike, manual welding is so important to the company. While most of the boilers are made by hand, there are computers that cut parts and pieces as needed. 

Another machine in the watertube division can be programmed to bend steel tubes into a specific configuration to fit into a particular design.&nbsp;

The process for a firetube boiler versus a watertube system is very different. The watertube systems are extremely large and are built inside a housing. Some designs use a flatbed trailer. That trailer becomes a permanent part of the system once it is delivered to its location. A conventional boiler is also large, but is shipped by truck and then placed in its designated location.

Once the tubes are in place, the vessel is fitted inside the holding area and the rest of the system is assembled. This requires some very heavy lifting of steel plates that weigh several thousand pounds. Gantry cranes move back and forth across the facility doing the heavy lifting.

On a firetube boiler, the vessel is welded on until all connections are attached. The vessel then moves into an oven where it is heated to 1,100 degrees. That hardens the welded connections, making the boiler stronger.&nbsp; 

Once that process is finished, the vessel moves across the street for its final assembly and painting. The boiler’s controls and valves are installed and the boiler is painted either in traditional Superior Blue or whatever the customer orders. All of the components in this area come from vendors.

The area has its own shop where any part can be made, including one-of-a-kind parts as needed. The area even has its own wood shop to build the shipping crates needed to transport orders. The shop has carts to transport parts and pieces that will be assembled in the main plant. Each has a number matching the vessel across the street.

Each boiler can take 14-20 weeks to complete, depending on its size, and can weigh up to 60 tons. Watertube boilers can take up to 32 weeks to complete. They are shipped all over the world. Superior has a strong order list, but is fighting to find the skilled labor it needs to fulfill those orders — a problem many in the industrial sector are facing.

🎥A Day in the Life: Superior Boiler

YODER, Kan. — Two members of the Hutchinson Police Department were among those who completed their training at the center as part of the 298th class of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Officer Antonio Aguilera Jr. and Officer Kollin Goering will start their field training within the next couple weeks. Officer Goering was also placed on the Director's Honor Roll for obtaining a GPA of 94% or higher.&nbsp;

Officer Chandler Allen of the Leavenworth Police Department received the award for fitness while Officer Morney Sok of the University of Kansas Medical Center Police Department was recognized for his firearms proficiency as the class’s “Top Shot.”

Deputy David Decker of the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Chief Dale Finger of the Leawood Police Department. Steve McCorkill, KLETC Senior Instructor of Police, was the class coordinator.

Two new Hutchinson police officers complete training

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 School Board will hold its revenue neutral and budget public hearings during a regular meeting Monday.&nbsp;

The budget totals $22,938,112 on total taxes levied of $3,542,863. The mill levy will increase from 42.6 to 43.1 mills.

Also Monday, the board will seek approval of the new contract agreement with its teachers. Under the agreement, the base pay will be $39,150. The board will also go over several personnel matters and hear reports from administrators and staff.

Monday’s meeting of the Nickerson USD 309 School Board begins at 7 p.m. at the school district offices at 4501 W. 4th Ave.

USD 309 School Board meets Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan.— As the Siemens Gamesa plant remains quiet in Hutchinson, company CEO Jochen Eickholt paid a visit to the US to address wind energy and the company. The plant has been closed since July, when logistical and economic pressure forced the company to close the Hutchinson and Fort Madison, Iowa plants.

According to Andrew Luther with SG, the company continues to pursue new orders for on-shore projects and is still waiting on development of two potential projects for which letters of intent have been taken. Luther says the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act is important for the industry and the company is reviewing its hibernation schedule for both facilities in light of the expected impact on onshore wind development in the US. Still, the company was not in a position to comment on specific timelines at this point in the process.

Eickholt had this to say after his visit to the SG corporate facility in Orlando, Florida.

Siemens Gamesa still assessing plans in the US

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No. 2 Hutchinson Community College looked poised to take the game-winning kick with the wind Saturday afternoon at the end of regulation.

With the game knotted at 28, week two hero Rontavious Richmond fumbled for the second time. Iowa Central took over with 12 seconds and took a knee.

Overtime would not have been possible without a big extra point from Cole Segraves. The freshman kicker needed a 35-yard extra point with 10:17 left in the third quarter after Micah Woods caught a 36-yard touchdown pass and let the Iowa Central defense know about it.

The 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty was added to the try, but Segraves made good on the attempt.

It was not the last time he would be called upon to make a big kick into the wind and rain.

Hutchinson got off to a hot start after Woods caught the first TD of the day from Dylan Laible. The 15-yard strike tied Laible for the most touchdown passes in Dragon history. His 50th TD tied Luke Barnes.

The next 21 points belonged to No. 7 Iowa Central. Four quarterbacks played for the Tritons. Zach Marker started the day under center, but left after going 0-5 passing.

Justin Silverstein had better success. He only went 9 of 21, but notched two touchdown passes. One to Cal Weidemann to tie the game late in the first quarter and later in the second quarter on an 18-yard pass to Colton Hoag.

The two air strikes and a long TD run from Jadon Washington (69 yards), had the Dragon defense stunned.

Coach Drew Dallas said it was uncharacteristic of his defense to give up such a run.

"With the exception of the long run, we played good defense," Dallas said. Outside of the long run, the Dragons yielded 106 yards on the ground on 36 carries (2.94 yards per carry). The Dragons gave up 174 rushing yards in all and 198 through the air.

Dallas knew each Iowa Central quarterback had the ability to hurt his team in a different way.

Listed as an "athlete" on the roster, John Holcombe rushed for 36 yards and threw for another 49.

The final Triton to make an appearance at QB was Omarion Bartlett. He went 6 of 7 for 46 yards and rushed for another 36.

Hutchinson helped Iowa Central by giving up the ball four times (muffed punt, two fumbles and one interception).

"We gave them four extra tries and they took advantage of them," Dallas said about the turnovers. Iowa Central did not fumble or throw an interception, but did turn the ball over a few times on downs.

Dylan Laible's quarterback play was overshadowed by two big kicks from Segraves. Coach Dallas said the passing game was "kind of a blur at the moment" in his mind after the way Saturday's game ended.

Laible went 20 of 36 for 233 yards and a touchdown. His one interception was not his fault as it bounced off a receiver. His two touchdowns on the day put him atop Hutchinson's all-time touchdown passing list (51).

His second touchdown of the day knotted the game at 21.

Hutchinson went into the break down 21-14 after a Jaheim Simmons 1-yard run with 23 seconds left in the first half. The run came on 4th and 1. Iowa Central challenged the play, saying Simmons did not break the goal line. After review, the play stood.

Hutchinson withstood a 21-point run from Iowa Central and put on a 21-point run of its own.

The surge started with the Simmons goal-to-go run, continued with Woods' 36-yard grab and was capped with another run from Simmons.

This one came from 5 yards away to finish a 7-play, 64-yard drive.

Iowa Central had the only score in the fourth quarter.

It came with 3:57 left to play. Bartlett hit Cal Weidemann for the 7-yard score.

Tied at 28, Hutchinson had a chance to win the game in regulation.

The Dragons were driving behind Tre Bess and his 89 yards rushing. Bess put the Dragons in a first and goal-to-go situation, but exited the game with an injury.

Last week's rushing hero (Richmond: 158 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown), fumbled the ball away with 12 seconds to go as Hutchinson tried to put the ball in the middle of the field for a game-winning kick.

Iowa Central played for overtime and lost the toss.

Hutchinson elected to play defense first and stopped the Tritons on a 4th and 1. Terry Kirksey had his biggest tackle of seven on the day when he stopped the run short.

Starting from the 25 yard line, Hutchinson moved the ball enough to put Segraves in position to make the game-winning kick.

Segraves missed from 40 and 41 in week one, but hit from 50 (on a play that was blown dead). Segraves hurt himself against Navarro and did not get to try the 50-yarder again in week one (Connor Gellender stepped in and left the attempt just short).

With the wind and rain in his face, and the game on the line, Segraves had to wait for his big kick after Iowa Central tried to ice him.

After the timeout, Segraves sent the 39-yarder sky high in the wind. The ball barely passed the crossbar and actually hit the calling official in the back as it inched over for the win.

It was the first walk-off field goal for Hutchinson since 2017 when Luke Niemeyer hit a game-winner through the same posts from 37 against Highland in OT.

Hutchinson (3-0) is off next week before heading to Coffeyville (2-0 as of this publishing) Sept. 24.

Marcello Bussey led Hutchinson with six receptions, Micah Woods had more yards with 73 and two touchdowns.

Jerrell Boykins, Javar Strong and Terry Kirksey each registered seven tackles.

🏈No. 2 Dragons and No. 7 Tritons battle into OT

The crowd was raucous as usual for the debate at the Kansas State Fair on Saturday, but the candidates did little in the way of policy pronouncing. The closest thing to news to come out of the Saturday event was Gov. Laura Kelly's assertion that she would create a cabinet-level position for early childhood education and child care.

"I have every intention, as we go forward into my second term to elevate the issue of child care and early childhood education by creating a cabinet-level position to focus on those issues," Kelly said. 

Schmidt, for his part, praised the legislature for passing child care tax credits and called Kelly's goal red tape.

"She went straight to where she often does, look how much money they've spent," Schmidt said. "They expanded grants. She's going to create a new Cabinet-level secretary, more bureaucracy. The impediment that I hear from child care providers is that there is too much red tape already."

Other than that one brief policy piece, there was a lot of dancing around the issues and waging proxy fights, Schmidt with President Biden and Kelly, though less so, with Sam Brownback. 

The two did agree that the Kansas voters spoke in August on the issue of abortion and Gov. Kelly said she would support the retention of the six Kansas Supreme Court justices on the ballot in November. 

Schmidt said he would not retain all of the judges, though he was not specific on which ones he believes should go, but he said that decision should also be left to the voters. 

The two candidates agreed that special education in the state is not funded to the statutory level, but they both also said that Congress is supposed to be sending more money to Kansas than they are and that the unfunded mandate from that level is the main problem in that regard.

State Fair debate shows few cards on either side

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It's day two of the Kansas State Fair. Day one opened up with sunny, warm conditions.

The highlight of the morning will be the governor’s debate at the People’s Bank and Trust Arena starting at 10:30 a.m. Other highlights of the day will be the annual grape stomp contest at the new Lake Talbott Stage starting at 1 p.m. and the annual butter sculpture contest at the Pride of Kansas building, also at 1 p.m.&nbsp;

On the agriculture side, the 4H commercial heifer show begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Prairie Pavilion building and the draft horse pulling competition at 4 p.m. at the Expo Building.

The concert for the evening is Parker McCollum starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Nex-Tech Grandstand.

Busy Saturday for the Kansas State Fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department and the Arthritis Foundation is once again offering the Walk With Ease program for people over the age of 60 starting Sept. 19 at the Delos V. Smith Senior Center. Walk With Ease is a structured walking program that teaches participants how to safely make physical activity part of their everyday life. The program is designed to help people living with arthritis better manage their pain and is also ideal for people without arthritis who want to make walking a daily habit.

&nbsp;“Research shows that walking is not only good for joints, but also helps improve the health of the heart, lungs and bones,” Diane Swinney, program leader of the Reno County Health Department, said. “Walking can also help manage weight, which can reduce one’s risk for arthritis in the knee, heart disease and diabetes. If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain, you will most likely have success with Walk With Ease, but it’s always a good idea to check with your physician before starting any exercise program.”

The information and strategies taught in the Arthritis Foundation Walk With Ease program are based on research and tested programs in exercise science, behavior change and arthritis management. Updated and evaluated by the Thurston Arthritis Research Center and the Institute on Aging of the University of North Carolina, Walk With Ease is shown to increase balance, strength and walking pace, as well as reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis. The program is also shown to build participant confidence to be physically active and improve overall health.

Walk With Ease program begins Sept. 19

KINGMAN COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just before 10:30 p.m. Friday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Polaris ATV driven by Max Wewe, 19, Pretty Prairie, was eastbound on Southeast 20th Street just west of 120th Avenue.

 The vehicle collided with a bull that was in the roadway.&nbsp; Both Wewe and a passenger identified as Cade Fairchild, 21 of Cheney, were ejected. The ATV&nbsp;came to rest in the south ditch on Southwest 20th.&nbsp;

Wewe was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Fairchild to St. Francis Hospital. They were not wearing helmets, according to the KHP.

The driver was unable to maintain the lane on a curve.&nbsp; The motorcycle traveled into the southbound lane and sideswiped a southbound 2019 Honda CRV driven by Steven Scott Johnson, 62, Wichita.&nbsp; After impact, Gable was ejected from the motorcycle.

EMS transported Gable to Wesley Medical Center. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

The SUV rear-ended a 2000 Chevy Silverado driven by Dyllen Dewaine&nbsp;Johnson, 30, Grove, Oklahoma, who stopped to make a northbound turn onto Olcott Road.

A private vehicle transported a 10-year-old boy in the SUV to the hospital in Pratt. The drivers and two juvenile passengers in the SUV were not injured. All five were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A donation made to the Kansas FFA was a nice way to kick off the Kansas State Fair.

&nbsp;<a href="https://farmlandfoods.sfdbrands.com/en-us/">Farmland</a> Industries took time to recognize the <a href="https://www.ksffa.org/">Kansas and National FFA Association</a> with donations, totaling $74,000, for their contributions in agriculture and work to strengthen the industry. That included a check for $9,000 to the Kansas chapter.

Donation to Kansas FFA part of Day 1 at fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kroger posted stronger-than-expected second quarter earnings Friday, as the parent company of Dillons worked to retain value to its customers in a time of record inflation.

Adjusted earnings for the three months ending in July came in at $0.90 per share, up 12.5% from the same period last year and well ahead of consensus forecast of $0.82 per share. Group sales jumped 9.1% to $34.6 billion and same-store sales were up 5.8% from last year, all topping market forecasts.

Kroger says it expects the numbers to continue in a positive direction as it heads into the second half of its fiscal year. Dillons operates 65 stores in 30 cities in Kansas, including four in Hutchinson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The fair is always about tradition and competition. One of the unusual and traditional competitions is the contest to see who can grow the largest pumpkin.&nbsp;

This year, the fair set a new record. Matt Jacobs of Stillwell, Kansas, broke the all-time record for the largest pumpkin, which came in at 1,280 pounds.

Other contests for the fair’s 10-day run include the youth pedal pull championships on Sunday, the best scarecrow contest, a biscuit bake off, best barbecue sauce contest, and a fresh salsa contest.

Those contests go along with the competitive exhibits that include food, photography, quilts, knitting and many other displays. The competitive displays are back in several buildings this year. The handiwork of Kansas residents is found at the Domestic Arts building, the Lake Talbott East and West buildings, the Pride of Kansas building and the Oz Gallery.

New and unusual record set at fair


HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — 
Local first responders will be out tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Allen Samuels Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram of Hutchinson where they will be participating at the Back The Blue event.  

The Reno County Sheriff's Office will be there with their Retro car, Bearcat and the Jail transport van.  

South Hutchinson Police Dept, Buhler Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and others will also be around before Raminator comes out to crush some cars. 

There will also be a raffle for Reno County Crime Stoppers and a bouncy house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and food trucks from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Buhler Crusader Football Team will also be holding a car wash from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Amtrak continues to struggle to get out from under what has been a very difficult summer, hearings were held in Washington on the next group of nominees to the rail passenger carriers board. That hearing included Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran who helped with efforts to keep Amtrak's Southwest Chief service intact to western Kansas.

“All of those nominees, especially the chairmen, spoke especially strong that he and the board and those nominees are fully committed to long distance service,” Moran said. “ [My goal is] making certain that Amtrak and its leadership recognizes that there is something more to Amtrak than the routes around the northeast corridor where there is lots of traffic.”

The Southwest Chief has been the subject of many proposals from moving the routes to the BNSF transcon line and eliminating service in western Kansas and Colorado to eliminating train service from Kansas City to Albuquerque, New Mexico and bussing passengers between the two cities. Moran says he liked what he heard during the hearings this week.

"I was satisfied with the commitment that these new nominees and these returning nominees to the board made to me in response to my questions on the record about the Southwest Chief and the desire of that board to do everything they can to make sure that long distance passenger service continues," Moran said.

Moran says Amtrak must continue to provide good service to long distance routes despite the high cost.

“We know that Amtrak service is not going to generate more money than it costs,” Moran said. “But that’s the mission of Amtrak and we want them to live up to that mission.”

Amtrak has had to endure major delays in trans due to increased freight traffic, rail maintenance projects and a lack of work crews and equipment. The shortages in equipment and personnel have forced the rail carrier to limit schedules on some long distance routes to five days per week.

Moran part of Amtrak hearings

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commission chair Daniel Friesen was part of a group that went out to view a fence Thursday to settle a dispute between neighbors on North Mayfield Road near Hutchinson.

"Commissioner Hirst and I went," Friesen said. "We appointed Public Works Director Don Brittain to be the third. It's an interesting process, it dates back, I think, over a century. The statute is very old and it's not used terribly often."

Lauren and Wayne Sill of 2319 North Mayfield Road requested the fence viewing to resolve a boundary dispute with adjacent neighbors Christopher and Nicole Schroeder at 2509 North Mayfield Road.

All that the group doing the fence viewing could resolve is the fence location and any cost sharing. That wasn't all of the disagreement between the neighbors, so the group tried to let them talk before filing anything formal.

"We started with what we could work through and then paused," Friesen said. "We then tried to seek a resolution on all the issues just amongst the parties and kind of encourage them to resolve those. We gave the parties an idea of what we thought, as far as, there were basically two different fence lines. One fence line likely needed to be replaced. Another fence line was being installed for the first time. There are different facts on both fence lines. We kind of started to lay out where the fence viewers felt like we were going to rule on the issue. It's an interesting situation, because it's one of the few things I've seen where you can't appeal it to court."

After about an hour, the landowners shook hands and made a private deal, so the county is holding off on an official ruling at this point.

"We have all the information we need to make one, if they don't kind of put on paper what was agreed to out there," Friesen said. "As far as what everybody understood, the parties came to a amicable resolution on site and are going to paper that out. I appreciate County Counselor Patrick Hoffman's work. He's went a little above and beyond and put together a little settlement agreement amongst the parties."

Hutch Post will be asking Hoffman for a copy of that agreement once it is properly filed.

 The September meeting of the Board of Trustees of Hutchinson Community College began with the Board welcoming two groups of students, the Blue Dragon softball team and the Ambassadors. The softball team is currently in the midst of fall practices and will open its regular season in the spring. The Ambassadors is a group of students that provide tours to prospective students and their families. They share personal experiences about their time here and answer questions about HutchCC and the community. This is a limited group selected by the Admission Office.

The Board then held a pair of hearings, one pertaining to the College’s Revenue Neutral Rate and the other regarding the 2022-23 budget.

Following the hearings, the board approved the budget after a presentation by Julie Blanton, Vice President of Finance and Operations. The budget includes a mill levy set at 21.829, the same as the year prior and its lowest level in at least ten years. This is made possible by an expected increase in county valuations. Tuition is slated to remain consistent with 2021-22 while fees will increase by $2.00 per credit hour. The $10.00 per credit hour reduction for Reno County residents remains in place.

In other business, the Board approved several items of routine business and received an updates on its strategic planning initiatives.

The next meeting of the board will be on Thursday, October 13. The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Shears Technology Center Justice Theater. The public is invited to attend.

Everybody in the orchestra is in their seats and now it's just getting everything going."

There are no required COVID precautions, but you can take them if you want to.

"We are still having the opportunity for people, if they want masks, we'll have them in the buildings, if that's where they feel comfortable, if that's what they want to do," Schulz said. "We are not mandating it. People still believe in the social distancing. We're expecting in that 325,000 to 350,000 over the ten days. That's our normals. It would be phenomenal to have our first big fair out of COVID with even bigger numbers."

Schulz looking forward to 'normal' year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The ribbon cutting for the new Lowen Corporation Free Stage at Lake Talbott took place Thursday afternoon on the Fairgrounds.

"It has been said that for three quarters of a century, future greats and near greats in the music world have performed here," said State Fair ambassador Richard Shank. "Also, I am told the Lake Talbott area has been the scene of many other events including picnics, weddings, and even a couple of funerals."

State Fair board chair Paula Landoll-Smith thanked the presenting sponsor for their support of the project.

"I'd like to take this time, just to thank Lowen Corporation for their generous donation in helping us here," Landoll-Smith said. "I'd also like to say great job to Galyon Brothers of Sterling, as well as to the staff and to the Fair Board."

State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz said the replacement of the stage was about both aesthetics and safety.

"It was in good condition, but we just saw over the winter that things started getting bad up there," Schulz said. "We just didn't want to take any chances, so it was, let's invest the money that we have to make sure that when people do come out here, they feel comfortable and safe."

The stage had been in place by the lake since the 1940s and will be used for regular free performances during the ten days of the fair and for weddings after that. Schulz said they had to move three weddings that had already been scheduled to do the construction for the new stage.

Lowen Corporation Free Stage at Lake Talbott ribbon cutting Thursday

NEWTON, Kan. — A tradition in Harvey County to remember the events of 9-11-2001 and help those in need returns Saturday.

The annual Harvey County RSVP 9-11 Day of Service project is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Newton Walmart on South Kansas Avenue.

The event is meant to honor the efforts of local first responders and is in its seventh year.

Visitors can purchase food items at Walmart. Volunteers will be collecting near the door and items will be given to the Salvation Army.

Harvey County RSVP is a volunteer group of those 55 and older who help out the community. For more information, contact Mary Adams at (316) 284-6881.
