RENO COUNTY — One person was injured in an accident just after 7 a.m. Friday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Ford Explorer driven by Merryn Alexis McReynolds, 30, Turon, was traveling northeast on Kansas 61, three miles southwest of Langdon.

The SUV rear-ended a 2000 Chevy Silverado driven by Dyllen Dewaine&nbsp;Johnson, 30, Grove, Oklahoma, who stopped to make a northbound turn onto Olcott Road.

A private vehicle transported a 10-year-old boy in the SUV to the hospital in Pratt. The drivers and two juvenile passengers in the SUV were not injured. All five were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Reno Co. 10-year-old hospitalized after rear-end crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A donation made to the Kansas FFA was a nice way to kick off the Kansas State Fair.

&nbsp;<a href="https://farmlandfoods.sfdbrands.com/en-us/">Farmland</a> Industries took time to recognize the <a href="https://www.ksffa.org/">Kansas and National FFA Association</a> with donations, totaling $74,000, for their contributions in agriculture and work to strengthen the industry. That included a check for $9,000 to the Kansas chapter.

Donation to Kansas FFA part of Day 1 at fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kroger posted stronger-than-expected second quarter earnings Friday, as the parent company of Dillons worked to retain value to its customers in a time of record inflation.

Adjusted earnings for the three months ending in July came in at $0.90 per share, up 12.5% from the same period last year and well ahead of consensus forecast of $0.82 per share. Group sales jumped 9.1% to $34.6 billion and same-store sales were up 5.8% from last year, all topping market forecasts.

Kroger says it expects the numbers to continue in a positive direction as it heads into the second half of its fiscal year. Dillons operates 65 stores in 30 cities in Kansas, including four in Hutchinson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The fair is always about tradition and competition. One of the unusual and traditional competitions is the contest to see who can grow the largest pumpkin.&nbsp;

This year, the fair set a new record. Matt Jacobs of Stillwell, Kansas, broke the all-time record for the largest pumpkin, which came in at 1,280 pounds.

Other contests for the fair’s 10-day run include the youth pedal pull championships on Sunday, the best scarecrow contest, a biscuit bake off, best barbecue sauce contest, and a fresh salsa contest.

Those contests go along with the competitive exhibits that include food, photography, quilts, knitting and many other displays. The competitive displays are back in several buildings this year. The handiwork of Kansas residents is found at the Domestic Arts building, the Lake Talbott East and West buildings, the Pride of Kansas building and the Oz Gallery.

New and unusual record set at fair


HUTCHINSON,
Kan. — 
Local first responders will be out tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Allen Samuels Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram of Hutchinson where they will be participating at the Back The Blue event.  

The Reno County Sheriff's Office will be there with their Retro car, Bearcat and the Jail transport van.  

South Hutchinson Police Dept, Buhler Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and others will also be around before Raminator comes out to crush some cars. 

There will also be a raffle for Reno County Crime Stoppers and a bouncy house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and food trucks from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Buhler Crusader Football Team will also be holding a car wash from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Wildfire crew training in California

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Amtrak continues to struggle to get out from under what has been a very difficult summer, hearings were held in Washington on the next group of nominees to the rail passenger carriers board. That hearing included Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran who helped with efforts to keep Amtrak's Southwest Chief service intact to western Kansas.

“All of those nominees, especially the chairmen, spoke especially strong that he and the board and those nominees are fully committed to long distance service,” Moran said. “ [My goal is] making certain that Amtrak and its leadership recognizes that there is something more to Amtrak than the routes around the northeast corridor where there is lots of traffic.”

The Southwest Chief has been the subject of many proposals from moving the routes to the BNSF transcon line and eliminating service in western Kansas and Colorado to eliminating train service from Kansas City to Albuquerque, New Mexico and bussing passengers between the two cities. Moran says he liked what he heard during the hearings this week.

"I was satisfied with the commitment that these new nominees and these returning nominees to the board made to me in response to my questions on the record about the Southwest Chief and the desire of that board to do everything they can to make sure that long distance passenger service continues," Moran said.

Moran says Amtrak must continue to provide good service to long distance routes despite the high cost.

“We know that Amtrak service is not going to generate more money than it costs,” Moran said. “But that’s the mission of Amtrak and we want them to live up to that mission.”

Amtrak has had to endure major delays in trans due to increased freight traffic, rail maintenance projects and a lack of work crews and equipment. The shortages in equipment and personnel have forced the rail carrier to limit schedules on some long distance routes to five days per week.

Moran part of Amtrak hearings

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commission chair Daniel Friesen was part of a group that went out to view a fence Thursday to settle a dispute between neighbors on North Mayfield Road near Hutchinson.

"Commissioner Hirst and I went," Friesen said. "We appointed Public Works Director Don Brittain to be the third. It's an interesting process, it dates back, I think, over a century. The statute is very old and it's not used terribly often."

Lauren and Wayne Sill of 2319 North Mayfield Road requested the fence viewing to resolve a boundary dispute with adjacent neighbors Christopher and Nicole Schroeder at 2509 North Mayfield Road.

All that the group doing the fence viewing could resolve is the fence location and any cost sharing. That wasn't all of the disagreement between the neighbors, so the group tried to let them talk before filing anything formal.

"We started with what we could work through and then paused," Friesen said. "We then tried to seek a resolution on all the issues just amongst the parties and kind of encourage them to resolve those. We gave the parties an idea of what we thought, as far as, there were basically two different fence lines. One fence line likely needed to be replaced. Another fence line was being installed for the first time. There are different facts on both fence lines. We kind of started to lay out where the fence viewers felt like we were going to rule on the issue. It's an interesting situation, because it's one of the few things I've seen where you can't appeal it to court."

After about an hour, the landowners shook hands and made a private deal, so the county is holding off on an official ruling at this point.

"We have all the information we need to make one, if they don't kind of put on paper what was agreed to out there," Friesen said. "As far as what everybody understood, the parties came to a amicable resolution on site and are going to paper that out. I appreciate County Counselor Patrick Hoffman's work. He's went a little above and beyond and put together a little settlement agreement amongst the parties."

Hutch Post will be asking Hoffman for a copy of that agreement once it is properly filed.

 The September meeting of the Board of Trustees of Hutchinson Community College began with the Board welcoming two groups of students, the Blue Dragon softball team and the Ambassadors. The softball team is currently in the midst of fall practices and will open its regular season in the spring. The Ambassadors is a group of students that provide tours to prospective students and their families. They share personal experiences about their time here and answer questions about HutchCC and the community. This is a limited group selected by the Admission Office.

The Board then held a pair of hearings, one pertaining to the College’s Revenue Neutral Rate and the other regarding the 2022-23 budget.

Following the hearings, the board approved the budget after a presentation by Julie Blanton, Vice President of Finance and Operations. The budget includes a mill levy set at 21.829, the same as the year prior and its lowest level in at least ten years. This is made possible by an expected increase in county valuations. Tuition is slated to remain consistent with 2021-22 while fees will increase by $2.00 per credit hour. The $10.00 per credit hour reduction for Reno County residents remains in place.

In other business, the Board approved several items of routine business and received an updates on its strategic planning initiatives.

The next meeting of the board will be on Thursday, October 13. The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Shears Technology Center Justice Theater. The public is invited to attend.

"There's a lot of fun that goes on, but we also have a lot of events that we assist with," Schulz said. "Our board is very active out here. They're going to be out here all 10 days. They've got areas that they oversee and events that they will be at. It's kind of, the conductor is coming out now. Everybody in the orchestra is in their seats and now it's just getting everything going."

There are no required COVID precautions, but you can take them if you want to.

"We are still having the opportunity for people, if they want masks, we'll have them in the buildings, if that's where they feel comfortable, if that's what they want to do," Schulz said. "We are not mandating it. People still believe in the social distancing. We're expecting in that 325,000 to 350,000 over the ten days. That's our normals. It would be phenomenal to have our first big fair out of COVID with even bigger numbers."

Schulz looking forward to 'normal' year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The ribbon cutting for the new Lowen Corporation Free Stage at Lake Talbott took place Thursday afternoon on the Fairgrounds.

"It has been said that for three quarters of a century, future greats and near greats in the music world have performed here," said State Fair ambassador Richard Shank. "Also, I am told the Lake Talbott area has been the scene of many other events including picnics, weddings, and even a couple of funerals."

State Fair board chair Paula Landoll-Smith thanked the presenting sponsor for their support of the project.

"I'd like to take this time, just to thank Lowen Corporation for their generous donation in helping us here," Landoll-Smith said. "I'd also like to say great job to Galyon Brothers of Sterling, as well as to the staff and to the Fair Board."

State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz said the replacement of the stage was about both aesthetics and safety.

"It was in good condition, but we just saw over the winter that things started getting bad up there," Schulz said. "We just didn't want to take any chances, so it was, let's invest the money that we have to make sure that when people do come out here, they feel comfortable and safe."

The stage had been in place by the lake since the 1940s and will be used for regular free performances during the ten days of the fair and for weddings after that. Schulz said they had to move three weddings that had already been scheduled to do the construction for the new stage.

"We just didn't want to take any chances, so it was, let's invest the money that we have to make sure that when people do come out here, they feel comfortable and safe."The stage had been in place by the lake since the 1940s and will be used for regular free performances during the ten days of the fair and for weddings after that. Schulz said they had to move three weddings that had already been scheduled to do the construction for the new stage.

The annual Harvey County RSVP 9-11 Day of Service project is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Newton Walmart on South Kansas Avenue.

The event is meant to honor the efforts of local first responders and is in its seventh year.

Visitors can purchase food items at Walmart. Volunteers will be collecting near the door and items will be given to the Salvation Army.

Total company sales in the first quarter were $44.6 billion. That's up from $41.3 billion last year. Excluding fuel, sales were up 3.8% over the same period last year. Profits totaled $1.5 billion.

The parent company of Dillons says accelerating its digital purchase platform aided in the increase. Kroger operates four Dillons stores in Hutchinson.

Drought continues, Cheney Lake still low

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The budget and revenue neutral rate hearings for Buhler USD 313 are coming up next week.

"The Board of Education's goal is to try to hold that mill levy as flat as possible," said Shane Hecox with the district. "It looks like we're going to just be, just a few hundredths of a point under what we were last year, as far as the mill levy is concerned."

Nonetheless, with a 3.8% valuation increase, Buhler USD 313 will levy more taxes this year than last.

"There's going to be very few school districts in the state of Kansas that don't exceed the Revenue Neutral Rate on a yearly basis, because the valuations are going up," said USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman. "We also have increased expenses, right, just like you and your homeowners, gas expenses are going up and goods are going up. Our expectation isn't that we raise the same amount of money every year. We will need to raise more money every year to cover those increased expenses."

In addition, the percentage of excess cost of special education funded by the state continues to drop.

"The state is supposed to be funding at 92%," Couchman said. "This year, it's predicted, it's only going to be at 70."

Technically, the prediction is for 70.8%, with a drop into the mid 60s next year, if no changes happen at either the federal or state level. This doesn't just have an effect on special ed students, because all of the cost not funded has to come out of the general fund, so every child is negatively impacted.

USD 313 budget hearings Monday

BUHLER, Kan. —&nbsp;More than $30,000 in grants were awarded recently from Buhler Community Foundation.

Grants ranging from $1,200 to $9,060 went to seven local nonprofit organizations paid from the Fund for Buhler, an unrestricted grantmaking fund that allows the foundation to address the ever-changing needs of the community,&nbsp;<a>and from the Buhler Public Health Endowment Fund.</a>

The following agencies received a total of $30,355:

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 3rd Annual Reno County Veterans' Memorial Poker Run is coming up on Saturday, sponsored by Bretz Injury Law. 

"The continued support from Bretz Law Office has been amazing," said Kelly Danyluk with the memorial. "They started out from the very beginning, clear back in 2014, when we did a thing at the Cosmosphere, a fundraiser. They had sponsored a guitar and donated some other things. They've just been very supportive throughout the years."

Registration begins at 9 a.m., kickstands up at 10 a.m. All vehicles are allowed. The cost is $25/rider and $10/additional hand. 25% to the winner, 15% for second place, and 10% for the worst hand. 50% goes to the Veterans' Memorial. 

"We just put 315 names up two or three months ago," Danyluk said. "We've got a list going currently. I'm still taking names. We always will take names. I plan to continue to do this for years to come. Right now, I think I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 names. I need to get to 150 to print a partial panel out there. Hopefully, maybe this fall, we can get that done. During the winter months, they won't print, because the granite gets too cold. Hopefully, we can do it before it gets too cold."

Door prizes will be awarded and there will also be a raffle with $5 tickets. Donations are accepted. There will be coffee and donuts at Salty Cycles and lunch will be served at Bretz Injury Law. Danyluk said the memorial is on a waiting list for decommissioned military vehicles to display at the site.

"We've applied for those vehicles," Danyluk said. "They say it can take two to three years. We have the funding sitting back to build the platforms that they would need to sit on. We're ready. It's just a matter of them saying, here you are, and they are approved."

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Our Lady of Guadalupe church will have several places where parishoners can serve you at the Kansas State Fair starting Friday.

"We've got three locations coming out of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish at the State Fair," said Fr. Eric Weldon. "The first one is at the Cottonwood Court, the OLG cafe, or the Guadalupe cafe. That will have the largest menu by number of menu items. Two different types of burritos, enchiladas, tacos, tamales and then two types of tostadas and of course, always rice and beans. The other two, the taco trailer, which is not even 100 yards from Cottonwood Court. That will have two types of burritos, beans and tacos al pastor. It sits right next to our country fair mart, which is like a convenience store on the prairie in the middle of the fairgrounds. You can pick up incidentals and necessaries that you might need that you forgot and you can get at the fair mart. All that benefit goes strictly to charity to the St. Rose of Lima society."

St. Rose of Lima is a charitable organization that helps with needs across the Hutchinson community.

"At the fair mart, you can get some aspirin or you can get some sunscreen, something like that, or even an umbrella," Weldon said. "Something you forgot, you can go there."

The food is what OLG is known for and has been for decades.

"We've been selling tacos since 1947," Weldon said. "Except for the COVID year, it's been a long run. It's a pretty exciting time. A lot of work, but a lot of excitement."

You'll be able to find the taco truck and the fair mart on Grandstand Avenue. Cottonwood Court is at the corner of Bison Blvd. and Cottonwood Lane.

OLG with three locations at Kansas State Fair

RENO COUNTY – A two-semi crash early Thursday morning blocked traffic on K-61 southwest of Arlington for around two and a half hours.

Reno County Sheriff’s Captain Levi Blumanhourst said the accident occurred around 6 a.m. near the junction of K-61 and K-11, known there as Hodge Road, about a mile southwest of Arlington.

Injuries to the two drivers were minor, but there was a considerable amount of debris blocking the roadway that prompted the closure

K-61 was&nbsp;re-opened&nbsp;just after 8:30 a.m., although crews&nbsp;remained&nbsp;on the scene until later in the morning clearing the trucks and debris.

Blumanhorst thanked KDOT and KHP for their assistance in opening the road more quickly than originally anticipated.

When the canvass was done on the recent vote for a bond issue in Hesston USD 460, the results didn’t change. The general vote held Aug. 30 ended with approval of the $33.4 million bond issue by just 10 votes. A canvass of the provisional votes extended that margin to 11. The final tally was 800 votes yes and 789 votes no.&nbsp;

The bond funds will pay for a major expansion and improvements at Hesston High School, which will allow the district to bring the middle school students to the new area. It also calls for major renovations to the high school, a new gymnasium, improved shop areas and a new auditorium.

Hesston USD 460 canvass does not change bond outcome

Kan. —With the failure of the Pretty Prairie $10.4 million bond issue Tuesday, it's time for some choices for the Pretty Prairie school board when they meet next week.

"We will just go back to the drawing board," said USD 311 Superintendent Ashley Anderson. "We've got all of our notes and original plans and feedback from community meetings and so we're just going to regroup and figure out our next step, which will be prioritizing projects that were part of the bond."

Anderson sees some of the maintenance that has been deferred as things that need to come first out of what was rejected.

"Our windows are really, in my mind, our number one thing, followed closely by our roofs on all the buildings," Anderson said. "We've got some leaking ceilings, which are a direct result of our roofs."

She said the district just can't do everything it needs to with what it can raise from capital outlay.

"It would be a range of $260,000 to $300,000 a year that we could generate," Anderson said.

Kan. —With the failure of the Pretty Prairie $10.4 million bond issue Tuesday, it's time for some choices for the Pretty Prairie school board when they meet next week."We will just go back to the drawing board," said USD 311 Superintendent Ashley Anderson. "We've got all of our notes and original plans and feedback from community meetings and so we're just going to regroup and figure out our next step, which will be prioritizing projects that were part of the bond."Anderson sees some of the maintenance that has been deferred as things that need to come first out of what was rejected."Our windows are really, in my mind, our number one thing, followed closely by our roofs on all the buildings," Anderson said. "We've got some leaking ceilings, which are a direct result of our roofs."She said the district just can't do everything it needs to with what it can raise from capital outlay."It would be a range of $260,000 to $300,000 a year that we could generate," Anderson said. Anderson 'back to the drawing board' after bond failure

HAVEN, Kan. — The situation at the Haven City Pool went from bad to worse recently. After the city council approved spending more than $300,000 to fix the issues with the pool, it was discovered that there was more damage to the pool than first thought.&nbsp;

The damage to the zero entry area and the rest of the pool are part of a legal battle that continues between the original contractor brought in to renovate the pool and the City of Haven. During Tuesday’s city council meeting the Haven City Council approved seeking bids to repair the new issues that were discovered.

Meanwhile, mediation continues between the two parties to settle the legal entanglements with the pool, which has now been closed for three summers. The matter was discussed in executive session on Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, the council went back and forth regarding the extended use of golf carts on city streets. Currently golf carts are allowed during the day and side by sides and similar vehicles are allowed at night if properly equipped.&nbsp;

During the meeting a motion was made to allow golf carts after sunset which failed by a vote of 2-3. Then, the council approved allowing golf carts during extended hours during the holidays only. How that will work is yet to be determined. An ordinance will need to be drawn up to make it official.

That ordinance is expected to go before the council at a future meeting.
