HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The African Children’s Choir will perform their “Just As I Am” hymns tour at a free concert at Grace Bible Church on Friday, March 17 at 7:00 p.m. Grace Bible Church is located at 1221 E. 33rd&nbsp;Ave in Hutchinson. A free-will offering will follow the Choir’s concert.

The African Children’s Choir combines charming smiles, beautiful voices and lively African songs and dances. The “Just As I Am” tour showcases traditional hymns with traditional African cultural sounds to celebrate a stunning visual story of God’s faithfulness. This is the Choir’s first tour stop in Hutchinson. Their Hutchinson performance has been in the works since before 2020, when it was sidelined by the pandemic.

The free-will offering will help support the Music for Life Institute, which has orchestrated the ACC for 34 years. Music for Life (MFL) has relief and development programs in seven African countries and has, to date, educated more than 52,000 children, positively affecting hundreds of lives by their international programs.

Grace Bible Church exists to glorify God, proclaim His life-saving Gospel, and to make more and better disciples, by clear, expository Bible preaching.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Youth Philanthropy Council of Hutchinson Community Foundation awarded $5,000 in grants to seven organizations at a ceremony Sunday at the Hutchinson Art Center.

Led by students from across Reno County, the Youth Philanthropy Council is a grantmaking program designed to involve area students in philanthropy: the practice of giving money, time and talents to help make life better for other people. The group began meeting in November to discuss local issues of concern to youth, learn about grantmaking and award grants to youth-serving organizations.

The grants were awarded from the Richard W. Dillon Memorial Fund, established by the Dillon family to honor Dick Dillon for his extensive philanthropic work in the community.

The 13 members of the 2022-2023 council are Andrew Auxier, Caleb Penrose and Claudia Taylor, Buhler High School; Karly Combs, Fairfield High School; Lee Harper, Haven High School; Ellie Foos, Jaylee Harvey, Kaydence Hines and Mahleah Marshall-Guest, Hutchinson High School; Copper Collins and Sophi England, Pretty Prairie High School; Anthony Clennan and Tanner Weathers, Trinity Catholic High School.

The following organizations received grants:

Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Reno County, $500: The grant will help provide snacks for the organization’s new Community Space where Bigs and Littles can meet.

Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson, $600: Funds will help update the club’s teen-run Snack Shop with equipment to add smoothies and other drinks to the menu.

Buhler Public Library, $590: Money from this grant will help expand the library’s junior nonfiction and young-adult graphic novel collection.

Hutch in Harmony, $630: The organization will use the grant to print coloring books for its Black and Brown Leaders Coloring Book Series, a collaborative project with USD 308. The project aims to help youth identify and relate to local leaders, who will be the coloring subjects in the books.

Hutchinson Composite Mountain Bike Team, $760: Funds will help provide a canopy tent shelter and portable bike rack for the growing youth cycling team to use on race weekends.

Hutchinson NAACP Youth Group, $1,000: Money from this grant will help support the necessary seed and livestock feed for the group’s youth-run community garden, which teaches members about urban farming and access to healthy foods. The group will then donate the food grown.

USD 310 Fairfield, $920: The grant will purchase creative play equipment to enhance children’s gross motor skills during indoor play on inclement weather days at the only licensed state day care in the school district’s territory.

Hutchinson Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire philanthropy, collaboration and innovative leadership to strengthen Reno County communities. Since 1989, the foundation has granted more than $92 million.

Reno County youth award $5,000 in grants

RENO COUNTY —&nbsp; A section of 56th&nbsp;Avenue northwest of Hutchinson is tentatively expected to reopen on March 16 after being closed since October 2021 to allow for construction of the K-14 realignment.

That portion of 56th&nbsp;Avenue extends from the existing junction with K-14/96 east to Yaggy Road.

Construction of the K-14 realignment continues, so ramps leading from the reopened 56th&nbsp;Avenue to the realigned highway will be barricaded until the realigned highway opens.&nbsp;The project is expected to be completed by June 16.

Background:&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Transportation realignment project started in the spring of 2021. This a 15-mile, $81.7 million realignment of K-14. The work stretches from near Hutchinson, to Nickerson, to Sterling. Bob Bergkamp Construction Co. Inc., of Wichita, is the primary contractor.

During the work, traffic will continue to use the existing K-14/96 alignment in Reno and Rice counties.

The Reno County portion of the realignment will be from about 4.5 miles southeast of Nickerson northwest to the Reno/Rice county line. The length is a little over 7 miles.

The Rice County portion of the realignment will be from the Reno/Rice county line to just north of the K-96/Avenue T junction. The length is about 8 miles.

Closed portion of 56th Avenue near Hutchinson reopening

Spring is in the air, and so is the smell of freshly baked treats delivered by home bakers taking part in Bake and Take Month this March. Kansas Wheat encourages all to join in this tradition as a way to reconnect with others.&nbsp;

“The long-standing tradition of Bake and Take Month is a great way to spend time with our children and neighbors as well as give back to those in need,” said Cindy Falk, nutrition educator of Kansas Wheat. “Whichever way you are able to observe Bake and Take Month this March, don your apron, take out your favorite recipe and use this time to celebrate our relationships with our friends, our families and our communities.”&nbsp;

The premise of Bake and Take Month is simple — bake something and share it with a neighbor, friend or relative. Add even more meaning to the month by delivering them with a handwritten note or staying for an in-person conversation.&nbsp;

“You never know the positive impact you may have on those around you simply by sharing a smile and a care package,” Falk said. “This piece of Kansas heritage stretches back more than 50 years and is as powerful now as it was when it started.”&nbsp;

Bake and Take Month started with Bake and Take Day in 1970 as a community service project of the Kansas Wheathearts in Sumner County. The Kansas Wheathearts, an auxiliary organization of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, set out to share baked goods with family members, friends, neighbors and others, generating community goodwill. The idea of a community member sharing a favorite recipe with someone special was so successful that the Kansas Wheathearts created a national Bake and Take Day celebration in 1973, celebrated on the fourth Saturday in March. Although the Kansas Wheathearts disbanded in 2001, Kansas Wheat continues to support this tradition.

“Bake and Take Day may have started as a promotion to educate consumers about the importance of home baking and the nutritional value of wheat foods,” Falk said. “Today, it’s a chance to break out the oven mitts and create memories together while spreading cheer and goodwill.”&nbsp;

Hutchinson, Kan. –&nbsp;This month's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ThirdThursdayHutch" target="_blank">Third Thursday</a> on March 16, is set to put&nbsp;visitors to downtown Hutchinson in an artistic mood. &nbsp;

“This Third Thursday, typically in the&nbsp;March month, is themed street art,” Loribeth Reynolds, Hutch Rec Marketing Manager, said. “What the purpose of that Third Thursday is, is just to kind of bring the community down to Ave. A Park. We have about eight artists that are lined up to do live demonstrations of paintings or mixed media, just any kind of art they want to show the public.” &nbsp;

The&nbsp;pieces of art showcased in Ave. A Park will then hang in the Hutch Rec community art hallway.&nbsp;

The pieces will be auctioned off this July during that Third Thursday's Art's &amp; Eats event. All funds raised from the auction will go to support artists at future Third Thursdays.

There will be opportunity for the community to flex their artistic side as well. &nbsp;

“Themed activities will be all about the arts, so if you're going in businesses or anything like that, I know that there will be a giant chalk drawing on the sidewalks there around Ave. A Park where it will be a chalk by number,” Reynolds said. “You'll get to pick out your own chalk and you'll get to kind of have a ‘community chalk drawing,’ if you will, around Ave. A Park.” &nbsp;

Then as usual for Third Thursday, local downtown restaurants and businesses will have specials.&nbsp;

Third Thursday to feature art in Downtown Hutchinson

YODER, Kan. — Haven USD 312 Superintendent Craig Idacavage provided Hutch Post with a copy of a letter he is sending to USD 312 patrons regarding the future of the district's buildings and more specifically, Yoder Charter School. The letter states that statistics were given to the school board at their February 20 meeting regarding YCS and Haven Grade School.

A public hearing on the topic was held on Monday, March 6, 2023. During this hearing, the public was given an opportunity to speak to the Board regarding their position on how the district uses resources. The Board was also presented with the options below as possibilities moving forward.

Option A-Yoder Charter School stays as a K-8 building

-Could create district attendance centers and have students west of Kent Rd. attend YCS.

-This would require the charter to be dropped.

-Would all 76 students be required to immediately enroll at YCS or grandfather in beginning with Kdg/new students?

Option B-Close YCS-Repurpose Building: Non-Academic

-Haven Grade School would be USD 312’s only elementary attendance center

-Would give the district 5 FTE (teachers) to use differently

-What would the district do with the building?

Option C-Close YCS-Repurpose Building: Academically

-PreK-3 and PreK-4 Classrooms (40 slots each - 20 AM/20 PM) (80 total PreK Slots)

-Extended Day Care for PreK3/PreK4 (40 Slots - 20 AM/ 20 PM)

This would be an option for the other half of the day that the student isn’t in PreK. Will be a charge to families for this option.

RCEC is looking for space for an Early Education Special Education Classroom. USD 312 currently buses 7 students in that program to locations in Hutchinson.

C3-YCS to PreK-6 Building -All 7th &amp; 8th Graders at HMS

-Add possible PreK/Childcare space to one of our current buildings

The next regularly scheduled Board meeting is Monday, March 20, 2023. 

The Board will discuss these options along with any other possible options and possibly take action as soon as March 20.

"None of the options shared will be 100% approved by all affected and interested parties," Superintendent Craig Idacavage said. "The goal of the Board and of the administration is to be as transparent as possible, and maintain being solutions-focused, guided by stakeholder input."

Future of Yoder Charter School to be discussed March 20

WICHITA, Kan. —The Rudd Foundation announced the recipients for the 2023 Rudd Scholarship. 

There are 25 full scholarships to attend either Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University or Wichita State University. The 25 winners include the following area students.

The Rudd Scholarship is a renewable, 4-year program that covers any remaining cost of attendance after all other aid, grants, and scholarships are applied to a student’s account. Cost of attendance only includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, and room and board. By removing financial barriers to a college education, chosen scholars are expected to achieve a high level of excellence on campus in preparing themselves to be leaders in their profession and in their communities after graduation.

The 2023 edition of the annual Gathering for Gardeners is March 11 in Hutchinson. This is free information from experts for every level that wants to get their hands dirty this year.

The Hutchinson Horticulture Club is bringing the event back after two years off due to the pandemic. This would have been the 34th year for the event, had it been able to be held each year.

"The event is good if you're interested in gardening at all," said Betty Taylor with the club. "You don't have to be an expert. You can be just learning. Our club is one of those clubs that wants to help people do better gardening."

The all day event is at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church at 407 East 12th just west of the Kansas Cosmosphere. There is no charge for the event, but you must register at the door.

"We want their name and the city they came from," Taylor said. "I find it quite interesting. Through the years, I think we've had over 30 cities represented at this. I need kind of a head count to make us feel good about putting this on for the community."

2023 Gathering for Gardeners is Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After an hour and a half of study session discussion Tuesday, the Hutchinson City Council will be waiting until next month to consider whether or not to commission a larger study on the 30th and Lucille intersection. 

The decision will likely be on the council's April 4 agenda. There are a couple of study options.

"One of them is just to do the cost estimate including removing the temporary, a construction cost estimate and the maintenance costs," said Jeff Schenk with Engineering. "That's $6400. That is just going to develop a cost. Now, if you want to actually do a full intersection analysis, what they did is just a warrant analysis on a signal, but to see what the best thing to do for that intersection is, evaluating every means, that study would be $16,000."

City Manager Kendal Francis initially suggested that the question of the study's scope be on the next agenda later this month, but new council member Stacy Goss said she wanted more time to think about it and that she knew that meeting would be busy anyway with looking at ARPA grant applications.

From creating fire breaks to monitoring the weather and keeping vegetation under control, there are a number of steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of a fire.

One of the most important steps to preventing fires in a field or pasture is creating fire breaks. Fire breaks are barriers of cleared land that create zones of reduced vegetation, preventing the spread of fire. This can be done by cutting down trees and brush, plowing the land, and/or constructing firewalls. Firebreaks should be placed strategically throughout the field or pasture to create as many obstacles as possible for any potential fires.

Prepare 2023: Fire Weather

HAVEN, Kan. — The City of Haven had a resignation and a replacement on its City Council at its meeting on Monday. 

Council member Sandra Williams resigned as of a Feb. 21 letter, and Ciara Powers was appointed in her place. Her appointment was approved after Austin Borden and Mark Robinson voted in favor, with Christopher Scott and Kylie Rush voting against. Mayor Adam Wright voted in favor, breaking the tie and Powers was sworn in and seated.

 Powers term will expire in January 2026.

Williams also served as&nbsp;Council Liaison on Haven's Planning Commission. Mayor Wright decided to take that issue up at the next council meeting. That meeting is March 20.

Haven City Council has new member

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —  Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) presents their Spring Forward Concert, featuring the HutchCC Wind Symphony and HutchCC Choral, on March 9.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The HutchCC Wind Symphony is directed by Eric Stambaugh and HutchCC Choral is directed by Neal Allsup.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Spring Forward Concert hopes to make people ‘embrace the wonders of spring’ and celebrate 'springing forward' with an evening of music meant to renew the spirit.&nbsp;

HutchCC presents Spring Forward Concert

Hutchinson, Kan. – Hutch Rec is partnering with Kansas CPR for a specialized class for youth babysitters on March 14.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“This is just a partner, we offered it in the fall, we’re offering it in the spring, and I imagine we’ll offer it again in the fall depending on how well it’s received,” Loribeth Reynolds, Marketing Manager for Hutch Rec, said.  &nbsp;

The two-hour and hands-on class provides information and training that youth need to become successful, responsible, and prepared babysitters.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The class has proved to be a thriving program. &nbsp;

“We’ve had really good interest and enrollment, so that’s why we put it out again,” Reynolds said. “Of course with the community in need of child care, we’re trying to promote that sort of profession to younger people to show them a career path in child care.”&nbsp;

The class will be for boys and girls, 10 to 18, and there is a $60 participation fee.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The instructor will focus on CPR for infants, children, and adults, as well as AED and basic first aid skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Students will receive a certificate upon completion.&nbsp;

Additionally, snacks and prizes will be provided.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The class will run from 10 a.m. to noon. &nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 Superintendent Curtis Nightingale said his district has decided not to pursue four day school weeks for now.

"I know, at the state level, Governor Kelly has, she's actually put a task force together to look at child care in Kansas," Nightingale said. "Not knowing what they are going to do, as we talked to community members and got input from the community, that was probably the number one concern was, how would this impact families that already are struggling to find a daycare and or, have got that taken care of, but school time is a consideration."

He also said they are still looking at calendars for next year.

"I've been getting feedback from staff," Nightingale said. "I've got a couple of options and I'm getting feedback, but none of those options include a four day."

It's also important to note that voting for or against the bond will not impact the calendar one way or the other.

"I'm trying to help people understand, they are two completely different conversations," Nightingale said. "There's misinformation out there that they are one and the same. They are not."

The board made the decision to stay with the five day week back in February.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners approved on Tuesday on a 3-2 vote, the slimmed down project list inside the Reno County Courthouse at its meeting. The price tag, even with the cuts, will be $1,867,025, according to agenda documents provided by the sole bidder, Ward Davis Builders.&nbsp;

In January and February, Commissioners Ron Hirst and Don Bogner met with Harlen Depew and Randy Partington to discuss items in the original bid that could be removed to lower the overall cost. 

Hirst, Bogner and commission chair Daniel Friesen voted to approve the money. Commissioners John Whitesel and Randy Parks voted against the proposal.

Below is the remaining Reno County Courthouse Space Utilization Project Scope, according to Ward Davis Builders documents provided as part of the agenda packet.
