Nitrate levels continue above allowable limits in Rural Water District 101, which serves the Yoder area. The last Nitrate level test was collected on September 6, 2022. The level tested at 11.1 mg/L, which exceeds the Kansas and Federal (EPA) maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for public water supply systems. Nitrate levels in water resources have increased in many areas due to applications of inorganic fertilizer and animal manure in agricultural areas.

On August 12, 2020, Reno County received a precautionary public notice for acute nitrate violation from KDHE. A warning was then sent to Yoder residents to limit water usage, especially for infants under 6 months. A second notice was sent on September 3, 2020, due to additional testing. A third precautionary public notice sent on October 27, 2020, requiring bottled water to be provided, upon request, to any household with members at increased risk from the nitrates, such as infants, nursing mothers, pregnant women, and other at-risk customers as identified by a health care provider.

On May 7, 2021, Reno County received a precautionary public drinking water advisory of potential Nitrate water quality from KDHE. A warning was then sent out on May 17, 2021, to Yoder residents to limit water usage, especially for infants under 6 months. A second notice was sent to residents on September 23, 2021, due to additional testing and a third notice was sent out October 4, 2021, due to additional testing as well. A fourth notice was sent out on December 29, 2021, due to additional testing that was completed. 

Reno County Public Works is currently looking at alternate water sources. The City of Hutchinson has already agreed to help, if the county can figure out the logistics. The City of Haven has also had initial conversations on the issue, but which direction the county will go has not yet been decided.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Friday kicks off what officials hope is a very big weekend at the Kansas State Fair.

Some of the events for Friday include the honey demonstration starting at 10 a.m. at the Pride of Kansas building, the fresh salsa contest at noon in the Domestic Arts building, and the annual celebrity goat milking contest at the Sheep, Swine and Goat building, starting at 3 p.m. Curley’s all natural barbecue sauce contest is at 3:30 p.m. at the Domestic Arts building.

There are plenty of livestock shows for the fair, including the arrival of the always-popular Watusi, starting at 9 a.m. Other shows include the 4h horse show at 8 a.m. at the Expo Barn and the open cattle show at 9 a.m. at the Prairie Pavilion. The dairy cattle show is at 12:30 p.m. at the Prairie Pavilion and the open swine show is at 3 p.m. at the Sheep, Swine and Goat building. The livestock shows close out with the 4h dairy cattle show at 5 p.m. at the Prairie Pavilion.

It is also a night to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs with Red Friday, which is part of the grandstand entertainment with Tech N9ne and Blane Howard starting at 7 p.m.

Friday begins the final big run for Kansas State Fair

HAVEN, Kan. — The City of Haven is taking entries for its fall garage sale day on October 1. 

The deadline to be included on the map is 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28th.

Last year's fall garage sales had 20 entries.

MARION COUNTY — Marion Reservoir continues to be under a watch regarding blue-green algae problems.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) issue public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae throughout the spring and summer.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red.

A&nbsp;Watch status&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.&nbsp;

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Amtrak Service continues to move forward again after the potential strike by freight railroad workers was averted.&nbsp;

According to Marc Magliari of Amtrak, the Southwest Chief will begin running its full schedule again on Friday. That means the first westbound train for Hutchinson will be Saturday morning and the first eastbound train will be on Sunday.

SW Chief resumes service Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Gottschalk Park at the Kansas State Fair always provides one of the better free entertainment venues during the Great Kansas Get-Together.&nbsp;

This year, it's a team of high-dive experts from the U.S. and Canada. Flying Fools is led by the husband-and-wife team of Simon Sarabura and Catherine Delisle. The group offers a 20-minute high-diving show that is a mix of talent and comedy, all while diving at heights of between 10 and 80 feet. That is further complicated by a pool that is just 10 feet deep and 25 feet across.&nbsp;

“I grew up diving in high school and I dove at the University of Buffalo, also,” Sarabura said. “This is kind of the next step for us college athletes if you want to pursue and keep diving.”&nbsp;

For Delisle, her venture into high diving took a different route.

“I quit diving and I got into flying trapeze and I did that for six years,”Delisle said. “They were looking for a girl for two weeks . . . 10 years ago. I did two weeks with them and fell in love with the show.”&nbsp;

Sarabura’s highest dive is from the 80 foot level during the show, although his highest dive is 95 feet. His speed hitting the 10-foot-deep pool during the show is about 55 mph. Sarabura says his group likes to mix in comedy with the talent they have.

“We put on a 20-minute, family-friendly show. We do a high-diving show circled around straight diving,” Sarabura said. “We take a complete left turn and clowns come out and all craziness breaks loose,” Sarabura said.

The couple and their teammates say they have enjoyed the fair and the surrounding area.&nbsp;

“The fair itself is very well organized and very well laid out,” Sarabura said. “We’ve been getting to know all of the restaurants around here and are trying to make ourselves at home.”

The Flying Fools are performing throughout each day of the fair and, like all entertainment at Gottschalk Park, it’s free.

Flying Fools provide fun and great entertainment at fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For years the White House on the Kansas State Fairgrounds was a refuge or meeting place for fair officials.&nbsp;

In 2013, the now dedicated Lair White House underwent a major renovation and became the fair's museum. Each year the small building showcases the past of the Great Kansas Get Together. This year it's a look back at all of the entertainment that has been a part of the fair's 109 year history. Joan Brown said this year's display goes back as far as it can.

“They’re going to see a picture or some kind of memorabilia from even the 1913 state fair.” Brown said. “We’ve tried to show the people who have been here the most times, we’ve tried to show a variety.”

This year's display shows all sorts of performers.

“We have the christian gospel singers, we have the old time country, the current stars, we show a little bit of everything,” Said Brown. “ We have T-shirts, CD’s, videos.”

Now this year's display is a little different, in that it is a repeat of last year's display.

“We’ve done a different display every year except this one has carried over from last year,” Brown said. “Just because it was so popular and with COVID a lot of people didn’t want to go into the buildings.”

The display includes photos of nearly every artist that has performed and some non artists such as daredevil Evil Knievel. The display also features many autographed photos including Red Skelton and guitars from country artists that have performed at the fair. The Lair White House is open each day during the fair and there is no additional admission to visit.

Lair White House offers look back on Kansas State Fair entertainment

Kan. — 
Hutchinson High School senior, Morgan Hixson, has been named a National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist for 2022. This marks the third year in a row that Hutchinson High School has had a student among the Semi-Finalist ranks.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual competition that recognizes academic excellence in high school students. The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which dates back to 1955.

To be considered for this honor, Hixson took the 2021 preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Hixson is among 16,000 Semifinalists across the country. She now has the opportunity to continue in the competition for other National Merit Scholarships offered in the Spring of 2023, and advance to the Finalist level. Approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Hixson is an International Baccalaureate student at Hutchinson High School, and also participates in the music program. In her time outside of class, Hixson enjoys dance and participating in musical productions.

After graduation, Hixson would like to attend a 4-year university, and has her targets set on an Ivy League school, especially Yale. She says the support of her parents and teachers have helped her achieve her goals and that she is excited to study medicine post-graduation.

“If you apply yourself and have internal motivation to reach your full potential, you can definitely reach it. It’s important to have that belief in yourself and not get tied down in the details, and just do the best you can, but take care of yourself at the same time,” said Hixson.

 “We are so proud of Morgan and she is very deserving of this honor. We were so excited to tell her about making it to the Semi-Finalist level. She is such a special student, and we could not be more proud to see her achieve her goals,” said HHS counselor, Carolyn Morris.

Hixson named National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist

Haven High School students are taking a screening test to help them socially and emotionally next week.

According to the district,&nbsp;The SAEBRS (Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener) is a brief, norm-referenced tool for screening all students to identify those who are at risk for social-emotional behavior (SEB) problems. 

SAEBRS is one of the only SEB universal screening tools built to align with a dual-factor model of student social-emotional functioning, which asserts that mental health should be defined by both the absence of problem behaviors and symptomatology (e.g., internalizing and externalizing behaviors) and the presence of well-being and competencies (e.g., social-emotional skills). 

Students will be assessed on Wednesday, September 21.

On the table are potential residential expansion at a cost of $8 million, development of additional programs in Natural Science and Exercise Science and expansion of graduate programs in Human Resources and Family Therapy, which would cost $6 million, a new center for pediatric wellness to expand childcare and outpatient mental health and wellness services for children, teens, and their families as well as provide internship opportunities for current students, which is estimated at $5 million, or additional scholarship endowments at a cost of $5 million.

The study will be tabulated by the Timothy Group of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Amtrak works to restore SW Chief service after rail strike averted

Kan. — With the city of Wichita removing <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/e63fc906-2408-4d5c-8a82-b0ac64064084">fentanyl test strips from its definition of drug paraphernalia</a>, local advocates for harm reduction are watching how state officials react closely.

Seth Dewey, substance abuse health educator at the Reno County Health Department told Hutch Post in an email this week that since it is still state law, the Attorney General's office could still decide to enforce the law as written if they want to make that choice.

Even if Hutchinson decided in the coming months to pursue a similar policy, it is likely that it would take ongoing efforts of volunteer organizations to continue to distribute test strips. 

The grant funding for the Health Department does not allow for such distribution, since the strips are still technically illegal. They also would not be able to use public money to promote the distribution for the same reason.

Hutchinson Police Chief Jeff Hooper has <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/78b61670-3851-414a-b486-b66be474607c">previously said that he will not pursue arrest of possessors of fentanyl test strips in the city</a>.

Local harm reduction advocates watching Wichita policy change

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department has the new bivalent COVID-19 Moderna boosters in as of Thursday, according to Reno County Health Department Director Karla Nichols. 

Nichols said they hope to get the Pfizer version in the coming days. That booster is for ages 12 and over, and was created to help fight both the original strain and the Omicron variant.

The old single strain COVID shot is now only authorized as primary and secondary doses to those who have never had the COVID-19 vaccine before.

You only have to have had the original two doses to get the new bivalent booster. The Health Department plans to release more information early next week.

Harvey Co. RSVP Food Drive is big success

The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office is selling specialty breast cancer awareness patches starting today. The patches are $10. The patch sales will be donated to the Women and Children Combating Cancer organization in McPherson (W.A.C.C.C.) later this year.

W.A.C.C.C. is a non-profit organization in McPherson County that started in 2005. All funds raised by W.A.C.C.C. stay in McPherson County. The money W.A.C.C.C. receives is used for medical expenses, pharmaceutical costs, transportation, nutritional expenses and or household needs to help assist individuals affected by cancer.

The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office is selling specialty breast cancer awareness patches starting today. The patches are $10. The patch sales will be donated to the Women and Children Combating Cancer organization in McPherson (W.A.C.C.C.) later this year.W.A.C.C.C. is a non-profit organization in McPherson County that started in 2005. All funds raised by W.A.C.C.C. stay in McPherson County. The money W.A.C.C.C. receives is used for medical expenses, pharmaceutical costs, transportation, nutritional expenses and or household needs to help assist individuals affected by cancer. The patches will be first come, first served. For patch purchases, contact Office Deputy Molly Stucky or Sgt. A.J. Elmer at the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office. Today marks the 50th Anniversary for when Officer Ken Kennedy died in the line of duty. ​In honor of Officer Kennedy, officers will be wearing a mourning band.

On Friday, September 15th, 1972, Officer Kennedy, and Reserve Officer Michael Coldren went to Robert E. Lee, a restaurant that served chicken, at 918 S Plum in plain clothes in an attempt to buy liquor in violation of the law. 

After the undercover purchase of illegal liquor, the officers attempted to arrest the male suspect and a fight ensued. A female exited the kitchen area during the struggle and shot both officers. 

Officer Kennedy returned fire and struck the female suspect twice. Officer Kennedy pulled the trigger two more times on his revolver but did not have the strength to have the hammer fall. Officer Ken Kennedy succumbed to his injuries and died on scene. 

Officer Coldren was rendered unconscious from a gunshot to the head and when he regained consciousness summoned help. The section of K-61 that runs through Hutchinson was named in honor of Officer Kennedy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Over the past several years, there appeared to be a decline in the interest level younger school students showed in the Kansas State Fair other than the carnival and entertainment.&nbsp;

But that appears to be changing when it comes to the fair and the interest youth are taking in ag-related organizations. This year, there are more than 500 FFA entries at the fair. Kansas FFA Executive Secretary Mary Kane says it has come with a change in the organization's approach.

“We saw it as an opportunity . . . to provide greater opportunities for young people to exhibit at the state fair,” Kane said. “We really evaluated what we were doing here and how we could provide experiences here that would be less expensive.”&nbsp;

That means visitors might not see as many farm trailers or other large farm equipment. But the organization still has the ability to showcase agriculture in other ways. Kane says it all starts with the organization's strong connections to schools that promoted FFA and ag science.

“FFA wouldn’t be around unless there was an agriculture education program in the high schools,” Kane said. “When you look at our model, you really can’t separate it, the classroom, the work experience and then the leadership development.”

The same can be said for 4H. The ag-related organization of Kansas State University has also seen a significant increase in participation at the fair. Beth Hinshaw, Regional Director for 4H, says they have seen a great turnaround in numbers, stressing that 4H isn’t just about farming as the organization works to expand its footprint.

“Farming and agriculture are such a strong foundation that we stand on,” Hinshaw said. “However, 4H is in all 105 Kansas counties in Kansas.” Hinshaw says STEM-related projects have been a major reason for the increase in participation in 4H, along with some of the more traditional avenues. But there is always room for more as the organization looks for more ways to attract youth into 4H.

“We want the opportunity to find their spark,” Hinshaw said. “So we want enough projects that kids can find something that’s really meaningful.”&nbsp;

But it’s not just about projects at the fair, as 4H also keeps pushing to build leadership skills in their youth.

“Probably more important is all of the other skills they learn being in the 4H program,” Hinshaw said. “Learning how to relate with other people, learning to serve their community. That’s not necessarily something you see in this building.”

Both organizations say they see a much better connection with the fair than in years past when it comes to engagement and overall interest from the public.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As the K-14 four-lane project continues in Reno and Rice counties, the Kansas Department of Transportation announced that West 82nd Avenue from Dean to Herren roads will reopen to traffic on Friday, Sept 23. The road has been closed for about a year during the four-lane project. No word on when West 56th will open again, which has also been closed during the project.

There are two permanent closures to announce. One closure will be on West 95th Avenue between Herren and North Riverton roads. The second closure will be on Herren Road between West 95th and 82nd. Those closings are also scheduled for Sept 23.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Thursday is a big day as we get through the weekdays of the Kansas State Fair before what fair officials hope will be
another very busy weekend. 

The day kicked off with the annual Chamber breakfast at the Encampment Building. The governor will not attend this year,
but Lt. Gov. Dave Toland will be on the grounds. Thursday is also the second
Pub Crawl, which is called the Pub Rockers Crawl, with a large crowd expected
to participate. It all connects with the Great White and Quiet Riot concert at
7:30 p.m.

Thursday will be day two of BINGO at Dillon Hall, the Honey
Demonstration at the Pride of Kansas building, and a cake decorating
demonstration by Holly’s Sweet Treats at 2:30 p.m. at the Domestic Arts
building.

Livestock shows include the open beef and cattle show, and
the open sheep shows, both starting at 9 a.m., and the 4H horse show starting
at 2 p.m. at the Expo building.

It’s also Young at Heart Day with visitors age 55 and better
getting through the gate for just $2. And if you feel you want to ride the
rides but never purchased a wrist band, then you’re in luck as the price has
been reduced to $30.

Chamber breakfast kicks off day 7 of Kansas State Fair

BARBER COUNTY—Two people died in an accident during a pursuit just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Barber County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a stolen 2008 Ford F350 driven by Johnathan Lee&nbsp;Ahlvers, 39, Halstead,&nbsp; was fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement southbound out of Pratt County on U.S 281 eight miles south of Sawyer.

Evidence at the scene indicates the driver intentionally struck a northbound 2000 Ford F350 driven by 70-year-old Terrill W. Underwood of Medicine Lodge.

Underwood attempted to avoid the southbound pickup by driving off the highway towards the east ditch. Ahlvers' vehicle was able to strike Underwood's vehicle in the area between the east shoulder and ditch.

Ahlvers was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Underwood to the hospital in Medicine Lodge where he died. The KHP did not have complete seat belt usage information.

 </figure>BARBER COUNTY—Two people died in an accident during a pursuit just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Barber County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a stolen 2008 Ford F350 driven by Johnathan Lee&nbsp;Ahlvers, 39, Halstead,&nbsp; was fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement southbound out of Pratt County on U.S 281 eight miles south of Sawyer.Evidence at the scene indicates the driver intentionally struck a northbound 2000 Ford F350 driven by 70-year-old Terrill W. Underwood of Medicine Lodge.<figure>

 </figure>Underwood attempted to avoid the southbound pickup by driving off the highway towards the east ditch. Ahlvers' vehicle was able to strike Underwood's vehicle in the area between the east shoulder and ditch.Ahlvers was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Underwood to the hospital in Medicine Lodge where he died. The KHP did not have complete seat belt usage information.
