HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Airport Advisory Board will hear several project updates at its meeting Tuesday afternoon.

On the agenda is the land release for the Obee School sale. The agenda says the survey has been finished, but they are getting the legal description worked out to facilitate the transaction.

The board will also hear about improvements at Hangar 5. They are due to go out for bid in November and the bid opening will be early next year, with the goal to have the work done next spring.

Also, the drainage improvements for Hangar 4 are scheduled to start later this month.

The airport is seeing more traffic this year, as well, as August operations were up 12% from the same time last year and the year to date numbers were up 7%.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The South Hutchinson City Council will hold their revenue neutral and budget hearings prior to tonight's regular meeting. The 2023 budget totals $7,358,836 on total taxes levied of $1,128,154. The mill levy will be 43.5 mills.

Also Monday, the council will go over an ordinance connected to water rates. The city has been working on a new rate structure for the past couple of meetings. And the council will discuss code enforcement and the IdeaTek fiber optic project.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the South Hutchinson city offices at 2 S. Main.

The next edition of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System's First Course is tomorrow evening in&nbsp;The Pavilion at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

The program will feature Pulmonologists, Dr. Mohammed Al-Halawani and Dr. Tariq Musa talking about Lung Cancer Screening.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. with boxed dinners served to the first 125 people. The lecture begins at 5:20 with Q&amp;A to follow.

The HMS-7 Student Council was able to raise over $700 to support Kansas Special Olympics through their own Cover the Cruiser event last week. 

 The students put in a lot of hard work over their 9 days of fundraising to meet and surpass their goal of $500. 

According to Andrew Soule with the Reno County Sheriff's Office, a special thanks goes out to Allen Samuels CDJR.  The people at Allen Samuels found out about what the students were doing and pitched in to help them meet and exceed their goal.&nbsp;

HMS-7 Cover the Cruiser event meets goal

The Hutchinson Clinic recently installed a new Digital Positron Emission Computed Tomography Scanner, or PET/CT scanner. 

The new scanner improves the quality of images, dramatically enhancing the ability to detect and monitor internal organs or tissue that have suffered damage through injury or disease, allowing providers to chart the best treatment course for their patients.

The new scanner from Canon offers a wider patient couch and a low minimum bed height, making navigation on and off the scanner bed much safer and easier when assistance is needed. It also offers a wider scan opening to create a more open and comfortable environment. This new PET/CT scanner’s faster scan time drastically reduces the time a patient spends inside the machine.

Dr. Fadi Estephan, Oncologist for the Hutchinson Clinic said in a release, "This is another example of the Hutchinson Clinic delivering state-of-the-art services, to all of Kansas, that are on the forefront of healthcare and technology for the past 63 years."

This advanced imaging is available immediately for patients. The new PET/CT scanner is located on the lower level of the main Hutchinson Clinic Campus at 2101 N. Waldron. Providers from across the state are encouraged to contact the Hutchinson Clinic to schedule time in the scanner with the Radiology department.

Hutchinson Clinic with new PET/CT scanner

There is just one week left to pre-register for the 2022 Rod Run in downtown Hutchinson coming up September 30 and October 1. Pre-Registration for the 2022 Rod Run closes on September 26 at midnight. 

 You can still participate by registering in person the day of the event. The first 200 pre-registrations receive a free 15th Annual Rod Run T-shirt.

Cars that are pre-registered have a fee of $30, with motorcycles at $15. It's five dollars more to register the day of the event.&nbsp; 

Vehicle parking is pre-assigned on Main Street and on a first come basis.

All registered vehicles are parked with an assigned parking space. Club &amp; group parking is available, but all members must register at the same time.

All vehicles must be registered for the show and receive their registration number, parking space assignment and window card.

Event registration fee is for all days of the event.

Security both daytime and overnight will be provided. so vehicles can stay in their assigned parking space overnight.

No alcohol may be brought into the rod run area.

The annual Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run &amp; Classic Car Show is an event that draws approximately 25,000 visitors to downtown Hutchinson the first weekend of October. 

The event includes a Show &amp; Shine of 400+ beautiful hot rods, classic and antique cars, trucks and motorcycles, a Main Street Cruise, vendor demonstrations, great food &amp; drinks all weekend.

Rod Run pre-registration deadline Sept. 26

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The fall semester Dillon Lecture Series kicks off in Hutchinson on Tuesday.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hutchcc.edu/community-engagement/dillon-lecture-series/sign-up?event=Kevin+Lockett+-+Sept+20%2C+2022">Tickets are now available&nbsp;</a>to the first fall semester Dillon Lecture Series event with former NFL player and K-State Wildcat Kevin Lockett.

"He was part of that real core unit that played for Coach Snyder early on in that transition, creating what K-Staters have come to really love and support about their football program, said college spokesperson Denny Stoecklein. "Then, Kevin also got his accounting degree at K-State. He's gone on to be very successful in business."

Lockett will be speaking at the Hutchinson Sports Arena on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. as the Barbara Peirce Memorial Lecture.

Lockett is a partner and chief financial officer at Fulcrum Global Capital, a venture capital fund focused on investments in the agriculture and animal health sectors. He is also a Kauffman Fellow and is responsible for the fund administration as well as identifying, evaluating, financing, and managing innovative food production, food safety, and food waste investment opportunities.

Kevin went on to play professional football for the Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New York Jets. In 1998, he and his family formed a nonprofit organization that encourages academic achievement in public schools.

Students and school groups will be admitted for free. Tickets for the public are $10.

Families Together Inc. will be holding an informational event at the Mary Magdalene House east of Hutchinson on Tuesday, October 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Families Together Inc. is Kansas’ federally designated Parent Training &amp; Information Center (PTI) and Family-to-Family Health Information Center (F2F). They provide support to families and their children with disabilities, and special health care needs. 

The Parent-to-Parent program through Families Together matches parents who have experience raising a child with a disability with parents who need someone to listen, encourage, and support them.

Kan. — Two different Hutchinson firefighters, Captains Troy Mueller and Bryan Goble have traded places with a previous crew in a pre-position assignment in California.

Brent Fisher and Craig Walle returned home over the weekend. According to statistics from CalFire, there have been 20 named fires since the beginning of September.&nbsp;

Hutch firefighters trade places on wildfire watch in California

RENO COUNTY —A Hutchinson man was injured in an accident just before 2 a.m. Sunday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Nissan Versa driven by 27-year-old Mario R. Garcia of Hutchinson was westbound on 17th Avenue just west of Washington Street.&nbsp;

The Nissan struck a legally parked 2008 BMW at 100 W. 17th Street.

EMS transported Garcia to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Hutchinson man hospitalized after crash into parked car

Final Day of Kansas State Fair Sunday

BowerComm, the marketing firm used by the Kansas State Fair, reported to the fair board on Friday about what it sees as the successes it had in getting people to the Grandstand.

"We say, oh, we're going to email people," said Lori Bower with BowerComm. "Everyone's like, I hate getting spam, but, just to give you an example. Every time we have a concert announcement, Parker was the first one that we announced, on Friday, we send out a press release to the media and say, you can announce this on Monday. They do a great job at doing that for us. We post it on social media and say, hey, Parker's coming. If you sign up for our email list by Wednesday, you'll get in on the presale, which is on Thursday. Then, we remind people one more time on social media, then we send an email out. We also send an email to our list, which is, you know, thousands and thousands of people. Anyone want to venture a guess how much we made off emails? $63,000. When you think, you know, email is not sexy, but it is really powerful. Email is a sales medium."

Social media, other than to prompt inclusion in the emails, really wasn't as effective in converting to Grandstand ticket buyers. Also a real success with email is special ticket packages. The presenters said that the ticket pack for seniors was especially popular. It's also important from a marketing perspective to keep people's memories in mind.

"As we think about, how you can help people feel better about spending more money here, it's through experience," Bower said. "If they feel like it's worth it, they're going to not feel as bad about shelling out $200 per person when they come here."

For his part, State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz believes that the marketing money has been well spent.

"For a fair our size, up until six months ago, four months ago, we spent $200,000 on advertising, is all we spent," Schulz said. "We were able to raise that to $240,000, this budget, I would like to see it increase significantly."

It may seem hard to believe for Hutchinson natives and those from central Kansas, but it's important to continue to let Kansans from areas well away from the fairgrounds be aware of the fair, especially in the state's urban areas, where population is growing.

State Fair marketing is working, Schulz thinks they need more money

Hutch Fall Fest coming up

KINGMAN COUNTY — Authorities are working to determine the cause of an apartment complex fire in Kingman.

Just before 8:30 a.m. Saturday, fire crews responded to the Eagle Acres apartment complex, 501 N. Thompson Street in Kingman, according to a media release.

EMS transported one person to a local hospital for treatment.

The American Red Cross and other local organizations are on hand to assist displaced residents.

The Kingman Fire Department, Kingman Police Department, Kingman County Sheriff’s Office, Kingman EMS, Norwich Fire Department, Cheney Fire Department, Cunningham Fire Department, Kingman Health Department, Kingman Emergency Management, Pratt Emergency Management, and Rice County Emergency Management all responded to the fire to assist.

Cause of Kingman apartment building fire under investigation

The Kansas State Fair Board heard a presentation from Tom Thebault with North American Midway Entertainment Saturday morning.&nbsp;

"We were like $9000 off from last year's Friday, but certainly up from 2019," Thebault said. "We hit the million dollar mark and we've got two days to go."

Thebault always supplements his traveling crew with local people, but said he probably didn't hire enough. He also said the traveling crew is really top notch this year.

"They do a great job representing us on the rides," Thebault said. "They also do a great job getting us moved. Some years, that doesn't happen so well."

There are two income thresholds where the company gives money back to the board for improvements in that area of the fairgrounds. They are at $1 million and $1.5 million in sales. The carnival set a record in 2021 at $1.7 million.&nbsp;

"I like what you are doing with the new blacktop surface," Thebault said. "It looks great, you know?"

He'd like to see work continue on that, if possible. The board also said earlier this week that they'd like to work on getting additional shade available on the midway in future years.

Carnival passes million dollar mark for 2022

The memorial service for Trey Jones was held Saturday morning in Hutchinson as community members packed Hutchinson First Church of the Nazarene.

His brother-in-law, Craig Honas, talked about how everyone who knew Trey, loved Trey and they want to help his family the way he helped everyone else.

“This is evident, when you look around at the amount of people in this building today,” Honas said. “It’s evident in the way the community rallied around his family and started fundraiser after fundraiser, and there’s still fundraisers after today. It’s been absolutely incredible.”

His friend and a coach with him in his days in Winfield, Brad Fox, talked about Trey’s coaching and how he reached his students and his players.

“When Trey’s hand was on a players shoulder, he wasn’t just coaching them in baseball, football, basketball or track, he was mentoring them,” Fox said. “Trey really invested in them as an individual, not just kids on a team he was trying to get a win out of. Trey looked young people in the eye and he engaged them in conversations. He acknowledged their value and he made them feel heard.”

His high school principal, Rick Blosser, coached throwers with Trey the last couple of years in track and was thankful for that opportunity, as well as the opportunity to be around him as a person.

“Trey’s charisma, integrity and passion is what drew us all to want to be around him,” Blosser said. “He was cool. He was just a cool guy to hang out with. He would come down in the mornings and stand with us by my office to greet students as they came into school, telling stories and talking to kids.”

Rev. Kent Pedersen, pastor at Hutchinson First Church of the Nazarene, spoke about Jones and his family and had some words for those left behind.

“Trey was doing what he loved when he died,” Pedersen said. “Traveling with his family and watching one of his kids compete. Two days prior, he watched Ava sign with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Ava, your fighting spirit and determination is an inspiration to all of us. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when we think of your mother.&nbsp;

“His greatest accomplishments were, number one, his kids,” Pedersen said. “Number two was helping others, although he didn’t want any credit for it. Hunter, your dad talked to one of his friends of how you were 20 years ahead of where he was in maturity at your age. Like has already been stated, I noticed in the hospital, you were calm, cool and collected for your family as they faced their greatest adversity. Creek, I know firsthand…I’m sorry you’re having to grow up sooner than you want, but Creek, I know firsthand from Mrs. Pedersen what a special young man you are and how proud your mom and dad are of you. Your dad’s physical presence may be gone, but the love he had for you is something that will live on.”

Memorial contributions can still be made to the Jones Family Fund at People’s Bank and Trust to help defray the family’s ongoing expenses as they continue to physically recover.

Memorial service held for Trey Jones Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A ribbon cutting was held Thursday for the new mural that adorns the visitors center on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The mural was made possible through a grant, and depicts both the modern and rural concepts of the fair. The mural is entitled "Cotton Candy Sunset" and was the creation of local artist Brady Scott.

“I grew up in rural Kansas, on a farm with cattle and lots of animals,” Scott said. “We had a little county fair there and we took out 4H animals there.”

Still, Scott says there was always something special about the Kansas State Fair.

“It was always cool to come to the state fair, which we only did two or three times,” Scott said. “I was inspired by all of the lights and the people, and it was just so different from our tiny fair.”

Scott says the mural also depicts how rural Kansas has its own beauty.

“I like the Kansas backroads and I like all of the interesting barns and there’s a wooden elevator on it (the mural),” Scott said. “Kansas has . . . I call it a 'quiet beauty.' People in Colorado, it’s in your face all the time, but in Kansas, you need to kind of quiet down and relax a little bit.”

Scott says residents need to appreciate Kansas and the sunsets, and other beauty the state has to offer. Scott also says that he hopes the mural will remind visitors to slow down and enjoy what the state of Kansas has to offer.

“I try to put a little bit of that sparkle in my artwork,” Scott said. “It’s to remind you to have fun and use your imagination every day, even as an adult, because we get so wrapped up in bills and chores and other stuff.”

New mural dedicated at state fair visitors center

RENO COUNTY—A Hutchinson man was injured in an accident just after 3:30 p.m. Friday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1993 Chrysler Imperial driven by Lane David Archer, 27, Hutchinson, was traveling on&nbsp;Haven Road at E Trail West Road.

The driver failed to stop for a school bus with activated sign dropping off a child. The Chrysler rear-ended a 2011 Chevy Silverado driven by Howard Kevin Rush, 58, Hutchinson, who was stopped behind the bus.

The impact caused the Silverado to rear-end a 2014 Ford Escape driven by Allison Shae Jankford, 31, Burrton, who was also waiting for the bus.

EMS transported Archer to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. There were no other injuries. The drivers and passengers were all properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Hutchinson man hospitalized after 3-vehicle rear-end crash

The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Charge Up Kansas NEVI Plan has been approved and is set to receive $39.5 million total over the next five years under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. 

The plan provides KDOT federal funds to help build a high-powered EV charging network across the state.&nbsp;

Tami Alexander, KDOT Transportation Electrification Manager told Hutch Post that no specific sites have been selected yet, but the program intends for there to be charging stations along the corridors in the plan every 50 miles and within 1 mile of the corridor.&nbsp;I-135 is designated as a Pending EV corridor in need of additional charging.

"Newton or North Newton could be the site of a charging location," Alexander said, "Those interested in installing or hosting a charging location will need to respond when the official request for projects is released by KDOT."

Alexander added that there is a&nbsp;Direct Current Fast Charging location in McPherson, but that location will likely need some upgrades to meet NEVI guidelines.&nbsp;Hutchinson is not eligible for the current funding.
