HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;U.S. Senator Jerry Moran's Service Academy Selection Board met with Kansas high school students interested in being nominated by the Senator for a slot at one of the service academies on Saturday. The several dozen potential nominees help restore Moran's faith in the future of our country and of Kansas.

"I say this every year, it seems true every year, but we've got a collection here of 50 or 60 young men and women from across Kansas who have a goal. A goal of serving their nation, and a goal of entering one of the academies to accomplish that other goal. You look at their experiences, their grades, their leadership roles they play in school and in life. You've got to be just so impressed. More importantly than that, I only get a snapshot of it, but, the character, the interest in service, the virtue, the morality. We need leaders who have those things. We need them in all places in this country. Certainly, it's to our nation's benefit when there's people of character who decide they want to serve."

Moran's selection board is a group of those who have committed their lives to service, as well, and who took time out of their busy schedules to spend seeing some of Kansas best and brightest burnished to a shine.

"We have men and women from across Kansas," Moran said. "We work at having geographic and other diversity in our selection process and these are people who have raised kids who have gone to the academy, who are academy graduates, so they know the experience, men and women who have served in our military and educators, all with the goal of trying to find the best kids. I don't get to nominate every one of these kids to go to an academy. I want to make sure that it's done...it's not in a biased way, it's not about a political favor. It's not about somebody that I know. It's about, who does this board think is the most deserving and most capable to accomplish a military education and career?"

Moran also sat on the Service Academy Board for two Kansas congressmen in his younger years.

"When I was in college, I was invited to be one of the people that helped then Congressman Sebelius and then Congressman Roberts choose their academy nominees. I've been interviewing young people for a significant chunk of my life."

Each member of Congress, either in the House of Representatives or the Senate, is permitted a total of five appointees in each service academy.&nbsp;

Moran's Service Academy Board meets with candidates at Cosmosphere

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners are not wasting any time bringing the issue of liquor by the drink to the table. The matter is on the agenda for Tuesday's regular meeting.

It comes less than a week after the county commission and staff learned of <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/9181cda4-d61c-4f85-ad04-e454adf77e51">a business that had an issue with its liquor license as it, at that time, did not sell enough food to maintain a liquor license</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas State Statute 41-2646 allows the board of commissioners to submit a question to the voters, following either the adoption of a resolution or upon receiving a valid petition from citizens. The election would be to either prohibit liquor by the drink, permit liquor to be sold in locations that received at least 30% of its sales from food — as is the case in Reno County — or to permit liquor sales with no food requirement.&nbsp;

For the current statute to change in Reno County, the county commission would have to bring the proposal up for a public vote. Tuesday's Reno County Commission meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Annex.

Reno County Commission to discuss liquor by the drink Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Thirty-eight law enforcement officers representing Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Washington, completed a one week intensive Gracie University Jiu-Jitsu instructor certification program at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC).

“Our mission is to train and equip Kansas law enforcement officers with quality resources to handle potentially dangerous situations, minimizing the risk of injury to anyone involved,” KLETC Executive Director Darin Beck said.&nbsp;

Jiu-Jitsu is one of several defensive tactics that stresses the importance of self-control and can result in fewer instances of the use of force. Jeremiah Hackerott, an instructor with Gracie since 2010, says the goal of the course is officer safety and to give participants a more gentle option for when they have to get hands-on in a potentially volatile situation.

“Participants will complete this course with weapon repetition and distance-management skills,” Hackerott said. “They will also walk away with the ability to teach others and develop a healthy culture that keeps them wanting to train long-term.”

Thomas Chuckerel, a lead instructor with Gracie University since 2017, has taught Jiu-Jitsu since 2005. He thought that the participants this week were fantastic.

“This is a group of people that are dedicated to the craft of defensive tactics. They are very focused and see the value of the course,” he said. “A trained officer is more prepared and less likely to overreact and escalate to an option of force. The techniques we teach are very control-based as opposed to relying on striking or getting into a force option.”

Deputy Misty Rice of the Sherman County Sheriff’s Office will take what she learned to instruct others at her agency.&nbsp;

“I study Jiu-Jitsu at home and I learned things during this course that I didn’t know before,” she said. “This has been one of the best training sessions I’ve ever attended.”

Law enforcement officers take Jiu-Jitsu training

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 will hold parent/teacher conferences next week.

Meetings for parents in the elementary schools will be Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 29, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. All elementary school students will be out of school on Thursday.

For PHMS, conferences will be Tuesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Meetings for high school parents will be Monday, Sept. 26, from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. and then again Thursday from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Newton Chili Cook-Off is Saturday

MARION, Kan. — Water sports at area lakes are getting more difficult as the summer season starts to wind down.

Marion Reservoir, as it has been for most of the summer, is still under an algae watch, which does allow for some limited activity in the lake. All other area lakes are free from such advisories.&nbsp;

The other problem is low lake levels. Cheney Reservoir is still about two feet below normal with many shallow areas, especially in the coves. Harvey County East Lake is closed to most boating because of shallow conditions. Kanopolis is also reporting low levels because of the drought conditions, although that area has seen some good rainfall over the past week. Officials are hoping conditions there improve.

Lakes still low from dry conditions

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz told Hutch Post in an email Friday that concert ticket revenue was up 56% for the just finished fair from 2021 numbers. He also is pleased with the hospitality the fair is able to show to those performers when they are here.

"That's one of the things within that industry, they do talk," Schulz said. "They want to know everything. How was the food? That was one of the big compliments that we have. Carla Shepherd is our caterer. We have some of the most amazing comments and the most amazing food."

Schulz said beverage revenue was up by 77% from 2021 and Gross sales percentages were up by 29%. Schulz credits his board with pitching in wherever they were needed throughout the fair to make it a great experience for all.

"We have 13 individuals, they are all just very excited about the Kansas State Fair," Schulz said. "They all want to be part of it. When you get a board member that's willing to roll up their sleeves and go out and clean toilets at the end of the day, or going out and selling tickets, because our ticket sellers weren't able to make it to a shift, that says a lot about somebody who is excited about being part of an organization. I just have to say thank you to them."

Schulz also said his board lets the staff do their work, but is always there to assist when needed, and the staff appreciates that.

In 2021, more than 500 motorcycles ran the usual route through Hutchinson from Main to 30th to K-61 and then to the Moose Lodge on Lorraine where the toys were dropped off. The run ended with a chili feed and a live auction.

The run is for street legal bikes only and will start at 10 a.m. at&nbsp;Salty Cycles at 129 E Sherman. Bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate.

The Reno County Toy Run was started in 1983 by a group of friends who saw a need in their community. The event is held the last Sunday before Thanksgiving.

Reno County Toy Run scheduled for Nov. 20

MOUNDRIDGE, Kan. — The fundraisers continue for the Jones Family.

The Moundridge Rec Commission is holding a Pickleball fundraiser on Saturday, October 1st at the Moundridge City Park courts.&nbsp;

There are non-competitive and competitive brackets for the double elimination tournament. The tournament starts at 8 a.m. October 1.

Registration is $50 per team, but the deadline to enter is Wednesday, Sept. 28.

The hearing had been tabled from the September 20 meeting and had to be held because the house has been vacant for more than a year and is a non-conforming use in the&nbsp;Established Neighborhood District.

Staff is recommending approval, as there are several houses in that district that are similar.

ARPA funds discussion part of housing commission next week

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Tracey Mann recently introduced The Strengthening Whistleblower Protections Act. Mann, ranking member on the House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, and Chris Pappas, chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, introduced the bipartisan legislation back in July, with the goal of enhancing protections for whistleblowers who expose waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer dollars at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"Whistleblower claims must be taken seriously – especially regarding issues concerning our nation’s heroes,” Rep. Mann said. “As members of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, we have a duty to address problems like a lack of structure and support for whistleblowers that could hinder veterans. This legislation will create checks and balances for offices managing whistleblower complaints – an effort that will simultaneously use taxpayer dollars more efficiently and protect whistleblowers. I appreciate Representative Pappas leading this bill with me. I was proud to see it pass through the Committee yesterday on a voice vote, and I look forward to its swift passage on the House Floor.”

Earlier this year, Reps. Mann and Mike Bost, ranking member on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, introduced legislation that would require the VA’s Office of Accountability and Whistleblower Protection (OAWP) to refer all whistleblower allegations to the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) – an independent federal investigative agency found to have higher trust in the whistleblower community than the OAWP.&nbsp;

Yesterday's legislation would not only require OAWP to refer whistleblower allegations to OSC, but would also require OAWP to track settlement negotiations and agreements between the VA’s Office of General Counsel and VA employees.

Community organizations and leaders in Hutchinson and Reno County will come together to hear stories and learn more about the impact of payday loans, including the need for payday lending reform, at A Community Conversation on Payday Loan Reform on Thursday, October 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church at 1602 North Main in Hutchinson. 

Concerned citizens are invited to learn more and give testimony to their experiences with predatory lending in Kansas. In collaboration with Topeka JUMP and the Kansans for Payday Loan Reform, several community organizations have come together for this conversation, including: Circles of Hope Reno County, Hutchinson Community Foundation, United Way of Reno County, Beyond Barriers, and the Great Plains Conference of the United Methodist Church.

The community conversation will allow people to share how payday loans have had an effect on them. Borrowers are likely to experience eviction, garnishment, job loss and loss of transportation when they can’t repay high-interest loan amounts.

Currently, payday lenders can charge Kansans as much as 391% in interest. Borrowers can borrow up to $500 but many of them are forced to borrow again and again to keep money for rent, bills, food, and gas.

State and local officials have been invited to attend.

Payday Loan Reform Rally Oct. 13 in Hutchinson

GREENSBURG, Kan. — A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just before 8 a.m. Thursday in Kiowa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a semi, driven by 43-year-old Jason Hindman of Preston, was eastbound on U.S. 54 when he rear-ended an SUV driven by 31-year-old Mario Garza of Garden City, who had&nbsp;slowed down and moved left for law enforcement on a traffic stop. Both vehicles traveled into the south ditch.

EMS transported a passenger in the SUV, 32-year-old Nayeli A. Garza, also of Garden City, to the hospital in Pratt. Mario Garza and Hindman were not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The accident happened around 7:45 a.m., six miles east of Greensburg.

Hutchinson Police K9 units meet supporters

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz said the final monetary tally isn't in yet for Kansas largest get together, but it appears that allowing the carrying of alcohol throughout the fairgrounds was mostly a positive.

"I worked with the highway patrol on a daily basis and there really wasn't anything," Schulz said. "I also went up to a lot of the people that were walking around that had a beer or a glass of wine in their hand and I said, I just need to ask, what are your thoughts? They said, it is the best thing you could have done. We want to be able to walk around and check out the grounds. We don't want to be stuck in a beer garden. That's not why we came to the fair, so we're excited about being able to do that."

It also appears that alcohol sales remained strong.

"First blush, we are seeing that there was an uptick in sales," Schulz said. "There, too, it could be just sheer attendance. The concerts were another big part of it and I think people were just happier to have that opportunity to walk around."

The Kansas State Fair announced that 315,273 people went through the gates over the 10 days earlier this month.

"The Hutchinson Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative has been working with, now the SW Bricktown neighborhood since 2014," said Adam Stewart with Hutch Rec. "One of the things that neighborhood has identified as something they really want to do is have these community events to really celebrate the community and celebrate the neighborhood."

The event is to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month and includes music from Mariachis Jalisco, The Hutch Clique, the DJs from 620 in the Mix and the headliner is Cojunto Rival from Wichita. There will also be lots of food and drinks at the park.

"That was probably the single biggest thing we learned last year was, we cannot have too many food vendors," Stewart said. "There were some considerable waits last year. We've more than doubled the number of vendors we're going to have this year to help alleviate that. We'll have a mix of food trucks and food stands."

In addition to those, there will be a beer garden by Reno County Boxing Academy with food and a special Mexican-style lager brewed by Sandhills Brewing in Hutchinson. There will also be a silent auction to benefit the virtual school program at Avenue A School that will include signed T-Shirts they were able to get when Gabriel Iglesias, also known as Fluffy, came to town for the Kansas State Fair.

The event is for everyone, not just those that live in SW Bricktown, according to board member Adam Pina. 

"I grew up on the 600 block of West Sherman," Pina said. "After attending the first event, I have since moved out of that neighborhood, but I had to be involved in it. It was something that I had always believed in, community outreach and just bringing our community together as a whole and reaching out to everybody and showing what we have to offer, especially in the Southwest Bricktown area."

The event last year had around 1000 people, but everything is free and it's for everyone in town, so Pina and Stewart would like to see the event grow into something that everyone in Hutchinson can come down and enjoy.

SW Bricktown Fiesta is an event for the whole city

KINGMAN, Kan. —One person was injured in a single vehicle accident Thursday morning in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a car driven by&nbsp; 19-year-old Camille M. Behring of Kingman was southbound on Kansas 14 when she lost control due to the wet roadway.&nbsp; The car entered the west ditch, struck a culvert, rolled and came to rest on its top.

EMS transported&nbsp;Behring to the Kingman Healthcare Center. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. four miles south of Kingman.

Behring of Kingman was southbound on Kansas 14 when she lost control due to the wet roadway.&nbsp; The car entered the west ditch, struck a culvert, rolled and came to rest on its top.EMS transported&nbsp;Behring to the Kingman Healthcare Center. Kansas woman hospitalized after car rolls in the rain

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Allen Samuels CDJR Teacher of the Month for September is Lisa Shelton. She teaches 6th grade at Graber Elementary. This is her first year as a lead teacher.

"The thing that surprised me the most is that I can relate to the kids on a level that I can, with the age gap," Shelton said. "Also, the thing that surprised the most was all the people I knew that had their kids and grandkids in my room. It's just a small town here in Hutchinson."

Shelton is very familiar with Graber as she was both a paraprofessional and then a long-term sub as she went back to school to get her teaching credential.

"I've always wanted to be a teacher, since I was 10 years old," Shelton said. "I used to teach my stuffed animals in my room. I had my little class going, you know? I've wanted to do this forever, right? Then, life kind of got in the way. I had kiddos of my own and went a different route doing office work and I was in administration for many years with office work. I decided that I would stop doing that, because I wasn't making the money that I wanted. Then I went into production at an aerospace place. When COVID hit, I got laid off. My husband was working at the same place and he did, too. I said, I'm going for it. I'm done. I'm tired of wasting my time. I went for it. I did the para to teacher program at WSU. I did all my internship here at Graber. I've been affiliated with Graber since my oldest son is 24 and he went here kindergarten on, so I've been around Graber for many years."

She's found ways to find out more about her kids and relate to them as they learn more about her.

"I have a little thing I do twice a week, called terms," Shelton said. "I give them a term from the 80s that I'm accustomed to, and the 90s and I'll have them guess what it is. For example, the last one was tightrolling. Of course, we know, that's what you do to the bottom of your pants. They didn't guess it, so I stumped them, so then they get to stump the teacher. So, they said, no cap, which I know is no lie, because I have a 16-year-old daughter. It was, I think, TikTok, where they got it."

For Shelton, she feels great to be able to have the maturity level of the older kids, while still being in a building that is familiar to her. She also encourages those that have always had a passion for teaching to feed that passion and become a teacher, as it is what she thinks she should have been doing all along.

Teacher of the Month: Shelton 'can relate' to her 6th graders

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 1200 East 11th Ave for a report of a structure fire in the mobile home park on Wednesday afternoon.&nbsp;

At 4:41 p.m. Wednesday, first arriving crews found a single wide mobile home with fire showing from the front door and partially through the roof and heavy smoke throughout the mobile home. Upon arrival, crews found all occupants of the dwelling had safely self-evacuated with no injuries. Fire crews performed an aggressive interior attack and a primary search of the mobile home. One cat was rescued from the fire. All the other pets were out and safe. 

Once the fire was knocked down, crews performed extensive overhaul. The mobile home, however, was a total loss. The cause of the fire is still undetermined at this time. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with non-life- threatening injuries due to the extremely hot weather that day.

Hutch Fire works mobile home fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — An inquiry was sent to Hutch Post as to why it appears that work has stopped on the Farmington Park project. City Manager Gary Meagher said in an email that the same contractor is working for the city in two places at once.

"Ward Davis is the contractor for the Farmington Park project and the Zoo Nature Play project," Meagher said. "Since he is doing the work on the two projects for the city he is splitting his time, based upon the work that needs to be done and the scheduled completion times of the projects." 

Davis is waiting for the new shelter for Farmington Park to arrive. Once it does, he will be setting and assembling it and starting the concrete work. 

The reason the dirt work was started so far ahead of delivery is because it worked out with the dirt contractor’s schedule to do it at that time. Had that not been the case, the dirt work would likely have been done closer to the time the shelter parts arrived and the concrete work was started. 

When contractors are working with their subs they have to schedule the work when they can get it done to make sure that they can keep the project moving and they can meet the deadline. &nbsp;

Davis told Meagher he should be back to the Farmington Park project within 3 weeks to a month. His completion date for Farmington Park project is April 2023, so he should have time to complete it before the deadline.&nbsp;

"I have worked with Ward Davis on city and county projects for many years and found him to be reliable and responsive," Meagher said. "I am confident that he will do all that he can to meet the deadline and will likely finish early."

Farmington Park work waiting on shelter parts

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The students from Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen who won an award at the National KidWind Championships in San Antonio, Texas, were recognized at the capitol in Topeka Wednesday.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson team was one of three Kansas KidWind teams that prevailed in regional contests, faced off against competition at the state finals, then went on to win awards at the national event.&nbsp;

The team met with Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland, who congratulated them on their success and thanked them for representing Kansas so well on a national stage. The team had the opportunity to talk with the Lieutenant Governor about their turbine design, lessons learned, and their experiences in competition. He encouraged them to keep up the good work.

The team was also taken on a guided tour of the capitol and treated to lunch.

To participate in the KidWind Challenge, student teams work together to design, build and test a wind turbine using the materials of their choice. Each team’s turbine is put to the test in a wind tunnel. Scoring is based on turbine performance, a knowledge quiz, a presentation to judges where the team explains its design process, and an instant challenge.

KidWind students travel to Topeka

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec and many others are gearing up for the second annual Fall Festival. This year's event is set for Sept. 30 through Oct. 1. The celebration was connected to the annual Rod Run last year, adding numerous events to the weekend.

The Rod Run &amp; Classic Car Show includes a Show &amp; Shine of 400-plus beautiful hot rods, classic and antique cars, trucks and motorcycles, a Main Street Cruise, vendor demonstrations, and great food and drinks. The weekend also includes several activities and events for all ages, including a Family Movie Night in DCI Park, food and beverage trucks, live music, and a vintage arts and crafts market.

Hutch Rec will also host the Salt City 5K and 10K runs Saturday morning starting at 8.

Saturday afternoon is highlighted by the Hutch Rec Brewfest from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Hutch Brewfest will feature a variety of craft beers from all over Kansas. The evening finishes with the movie in the park, featuring the classic movie Grease at 7:30 in DCI Park.
