HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Hutchinson Police Department is investigating an April 12 crash in connection to the death of a 76-year-old man.

At 10:48 a.m., HPD officers, Hutchinson Fire Department, and Reno County EMS were dispatched to the 1700 block of E. 30th Ave. for a single vehicle crash.&nbsp;

It was discovered a 76-year-old man was driving westbound on E. 30th Ave. when his vehicle left the roadway and struck several objects including a light pole.&nbsp;

The accident caused an outage, affecting many residential customers.&nbsp;

"Power went out just shortly before 11 a.m., we had just about 640 people out," Kalie Bohlen, Evergy Communications Manager, said. "Pretty quickly, we were able to pick up 450 customers, and then they finished up those repairs and had everyone back on by 11:40 a.m."&nbsp;

Bohlen said the outage lasted about 40 minutes.&nbsp;

The man was transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center by Reno County EMS, where he was pronounced dead.&nbsp;

As of this writing, the victim's immediate family has not been notified, so no names will be released.&nbsp;

The crash is being investigated by the Hutchinson Police Department Traffic Unit. This is an ongoing investigation.&nbsp;

One person dead in Wednesday crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson Police are investigating a robbery that occurred on April 11 at the Subway sandwich shop at 1620 E. 30th Ave.&nbsp;

Around 9:18 Tuesday morning, police responded and they were told that the suspect knocked on the back door. An&nbsp;employee opened the door, at which point the suspect entered the business and demanded money. 

According to HPD, after obtaining roughly $300 in cash, the suspect left in a blue/gray minivan. 

Officers were unable to locate the suspect. 

The only thing reported stolen was cash. No employees were injured in the robbery.

Investigation continues into Tuesday robbery

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Third Thursday in Downtown Hutchinson is all about fighting spring fever by being outdoors&nbsp;on April 20. &nbsp;

 “We’re celebrating spring fever,” Loribeth Reynolds, Hutch Rec Marketing Manager, said. “Cure your spring fever by getting outside in beautiful Downtown Hutchinson. The tulips are blooming and of course the trees are abloom as well.” &nbsp;

Reno County families and residents will be able to come out and enjoy plenty of fun activities and events throughout the evening.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://www.familycommunitytheatre.org/" target="_blank">Family Community Theatre</a>, the Flag Theatre, will be performing five short plays at the Avenue A Gazebo. &nbsp;

Musicians will be performing from Avenue A stretching to 2nd Ave. &nbsp;

<a href="http://www.axeituphutch.com/" target="_blank">Axe It Up Hutch</a> will be providing thirty-minute free axe-throwing sessions. &nbsp;

For a Touch-A-Truck event, the streets from Avenue C to Avenue A will be blocked off for kids to get familiar with the different trucks utilized by&nbsp;local services.

There will be trucks from the&nbsp;City of Hutchinson, Hutchinson Fire Department, Reno County Sheriff’s Office, and more.  &nbsp;

Then the&nbsp;Eagles of Reno County Special Olympics team will be fundraising by selling cotton candy. &nbsp;

Additionally, there will be opportunities to&nbsp;operate toy trains with Richard the Train Man at <a href="https://hutchtoydepot.com/welcome-to-toy-depot" target="_blank">Toy Depot</a>. &nbsp;

Of course, crafts vendors, information booths, and artists will line up downtown too.&nbsp;

As is tradition on Third Thursdays,&nbsp;Downtown Hutchinson businesses and restaurants will be&nbsp;open later as part of the event. &nbsp;

On Thursday, April 12, Reynolds said Hutch Rec’s&nbsp;full lineup and newsletter will be sent out. &nbsp;

Downtown Hutch has the cure for spring fever

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council is holding a special meeting Wednesday, which is a stakeholders meeting regarding the Memorial Hall Historic Preservation and Reuse Plan.&nbsp;

Memorial Hall is located at the southwest corner of East Avenue A and South Walnut Street at 101 South Walnut Street and is in the city’s Downtown Core South Historic District. 

Memorial Hall was originally known as Convention Hall and completed construction in 1912. President William Howard Taft was present at the laying of the cornerstone of the building in 1911 which was said to be the first time in Kansas history that a U.S. President had performed such a ceremony. 

The building was designed to seat approximately 4,000 people, with 2,000 on the main floor, and another 2,000 in the balconies and galleries. 

A major flood in 1941 damaged the building’s floor and discussions at the time included whether to condemn the building. The building was remodeled in the 1950s, but the building has continued to be the subject of local debate for many decades. 

A unique feature of the building is that it is built on a bridge and pier structure that allows the building to straddle Cow Creek.

In 1996, a special election was held with the question of saving the building or tearing it down with Hutchinson residents voting to save the building.

Renovations were made following the special election and the building was renamed Memorial Hall.

Memorial Hall has been more widely used since its renovation, but a lack of air conditioning has been the&nbsp;major limiting factor to year-round use of the building.

The meeting Wednesday is at 3:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers Conference Room at City Hall.

Memorial Hall meeting is Wednesday afternoon

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Pretty Prairie USD 311 Superintendent Ashley Anderson said there are going to be two public meetings later this month before USD 311 voters are asked to support a $7.7 million bond issue.

"We're actually going to host some community meetings," Anderson said. "Our first one is on April 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium, then the other one is on April 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. People can come and ask questions. We'll have our architect there, our construction management team, our financial advisor, so we should have everybody there that would have the answers to any question that a community member might have."

One small note that Anderson made regarding the middle school gymnasium work to turn it into a competition gym for the high school is that some work was going to be required on that gym anyway.

"Our north wall there has water damage on it anyway," Anderson said. "We were going to be looking at fixing that anyway and that's kind of how it all came about. We knew we needed to do something there, we knew it was way more expensive to remodel our current high school gym, because of all the concrete that's in that space. That's when remodeling the middle school became our most cost efficient project. That's why we went with that."

Weatherproofing the district's buildings is a big part of the bond project's scope with roof and window work at the elementary, middle and high school levels as part of the bond, in addition to secure entrances at the buildings. The bond vote is May 16.

Community meetings to be held in Pretty Prairie

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jim Robb with the Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale said as the war still continues in Ukraine so does the support of the Mennonite Central Committee, the group that receives the money made from the sale.

"We still have a group of people that are there," Robb said. "They are called MCC partners. They are the people who are on the ground there working with refugees, people who have lost their homes, remnants of churches, we try to get them what they need, as much as we can, food and medical assistance, just try to make sure that they know they are not forgotten and we can give them a little bit of hope."

The goal of the whole sale is to help the Mennonite Central Committee in their work around the globe. The Mennonite Central Committee strives to make peace a part of everything they do. The original organization in 1920 was to help Mennonites from what is now Ukraine avoid starvation. The efforts of the sale bring together volunteers from across the state's Mennonite churches.

"We have a group of thousands," Robb said. "It's really hard to figure, when you think in terms of, we send out requests to churches to provide pies and bread and peppernuts and poppyseed rolls and cinnamon rolls and all of those kinds of things. You start multiplying that out and it gets to be well over 1000 pretty fast. We had a verenike making day two Saturdays ago, that in itself, we had 150 volunteers in the morning and probably another 80 in the afternoon. That's 230 volunteers, right there."

The schedule of events starts with sale booths opening at 4 p.m. Friday, with the feeding of the multitude also starting at that time, and the silent auction starting at 5 p.m. and packing of hygiene kits starts at 6 p.m. Friday.

"Last year, some 42,000 hygiene kits went out around the world," Robb said. "It's things like toothbrushes and bars of soap and towels and the kinds of things that would fit easily into a bag that people can pick up and take with them and be able to take care of one of the basic human needs."

On Saturday, breakfast starts in Cottonwood Court at 7 a.m., with booths open at 8 a.m. The 5K Run for Relief is at 8 a.m., with the silent auction bidding reopening from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The quilt and general auctions both starting at 8:45 a.m. and the children's auction at 10 a.m. Feeding the multitude is on again from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a Pepsi collectibles auction at 11 a.m. and the big ticket items in the general auction around 2 p.m. and the remainders to be auctioned off around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale is on for 2023

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Debra Teufel with the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to the opening of Atwoods at the old KMart just like everyone else, but she told Hutch Post, according to a conversation with the contractor this week, they aren't quite ready yet.

"They have hopes of being open in May, maybe even in early May," Teufel said. "He has plans with the inspection department to be out there the first part of May to do all of their final inspections and have the fire chief out, so they can get their certificate of occupancy. That is all dependent on them getting the AC units in and they still don't have a ship date for the units."

The original hope was that they would be in by the middle of April.

"They had hoped to have those in by last week," Teufel said. "They are still waiting. The front of the building looks great. You probably have driven by on 30th and seen they have the signage on the front of the building now. The exterior is starting to take shape, but now they are simply waiting on some of that equipment, so that they can do the final walk through and inspection before they can stock the store to get ready."

Atwoods just opened a store in Searcy, Arkansas last week.

Atwoods still delayed due to HVAC supply issues

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — At the Board of County Commissioners meeting Tuesday, Commissioner Randy Parks raised the issue of potentially cutting the county budget for the 2024 budget year.

"I think we have to go into it with the mindset of the constituents we work for," Parks said. "They are, I think, typical. The bond issue that failed is probably a typical picture of how they feel right now. I think we need to be extremely cautious when looking at spending extra money that we don't need to."

Both Parks and Commissioner John Whitesel are really reticent to continue to fund outside agencies with taxpayer dollars.

"Randy, I think I'm in agreement with you, these groups that are raising money from their members or raising money from different things. I really don't see that county money belongs there. Basically, what we're saying is, we're going to charge our local residents for things that may benefit the county, but it's not benefiting them."

Commission chair Daniel Friesen then directed County Administrator Randy Partington to set up a time when the commission and the administrator can talk about the big picture goal of how much to cut, so that then he can get in the weeds of where to make the cuts.

"One thing we did last year, Randy, I don't know how early you did it, but you kind of came to us and said where do you want to be, total?," Friesen said. "Do you want to do revenue neutral, do you want to be zero mill levy, you want to go down five percent? I think last year we said try to go down five percent total taxes. You want to do that again? It seems like there's enough consensus."

Partington said he'd like to either have a study session or set aside some time at the end of a commission meeting to find out where they want that number to be and a general idea of the areas where cuts should come from, if that's what the majority of the council wants to do, before even bringing any sort of proposal forward. The date for that conversation has not yet been set.

County looking closely at 2024 budget

NEWTON, Kan. —&nbsp;The City of Newton announced on April 11, the Newton Substance Abuse Board is seeking applications for grants to fund programs or services. &nbsp;

The grants’ principal purpose is to help fund:&nbsp;

Alcoholism and drug abuse prevention and education.&nbsp;

Intervention in alcohol and drug abuse.&nbsp;

Treatment of alcoholism or drug abuse.&nbsp;

Newton seeking grants to fund recovery

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hopping its way to the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, the Central Regional Rabbit Club plans to showcase over 1,000 rabbits over the weekend, starting April 14, at the Central Regional Rabbit Show. &nbsp;

The Central Regional Rabbit Show will feature the Netherlands Dwarf Spring Nationals and the Rhinelander Spring Nationals. &nbsp;

“We've got over 1,000 rabbits coming to Hutchinson,” said Sara Michaud with the Central Regional Rabbit Club.&nbsp;“Most of them will start coming in Thursday, most of them will have to be there by Friday, and then the show will start on Saturday.”&nbsp;

The rabbits will be judged by people from all over the U.S. &nbsp;

The Central Regional Rabbit Club has been putting on the Spring Nationals for four to five years. &nbsp;

“This is the individual big breeds show of the year until we have nationals in October, and that will be in Louisville, Kentucky,” Michaud said. &nbsp;

The leadup to a rabbit show is just breeding the right stock to meet the ‘standard of perfection.’ &nbsp;

Michaud, herself, has been raising rabbits since she was a child.&nbsp;

“It's just a hobby that most of us started either with kids in it or as kids and just have enjoyed them,” Michaud said. &nbsp;

Michaud believes raising rabbits is a learning experience that teaches responsibility, especially with details such as the right feed and right cage.&nbsp;

Through her years of involvement in show rabbits, Michaud has worked her way up to a show judge and will be judging at the Central Regional Rabbit Show. &nbsp;

Rabbits for the show&nbsp;will have to be registered by Friday, April 14.&nbsp;

There will be a royalty contest for youth on Friday. &nbsp;

Then on Saturday, April 15, the main show will start at 8 a.m. Due to how many rabbits there are, this show may run a little longer.

On Sunday, April 16, an all-breed show will also start at 8 a.m. People from anywhere in Kansas will be able to show any of their breeds, not just the two breeds being shown on Saturday. &nbsp;

The Central Regional Rabbit Show will take place at the Kansas State Fairgrounds at 2000 N. Poplar St. in Hutchinson.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners officially passed a moratorium on commercial solar projects at its meeting on Tuesday.&nbsp;

There will be no commercial solar development in the county through the rest of 2023, to give the county's Planning Commission time to develop solar project regulations.

There was a consensus among commissioners to do this at a meeting last month and the vote on the resolution without any amendments was 5-0.

The planning commission now has the rest of the year to write regulations for county commissioners to look at, hopefully sometime in 2024.

County Commissioners approve solar moratorium

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After the Board of County Commissioners approved a series of projects at the Reno County Courthouse last month that included renovations to the District Attorney's office area, Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton spoke to the board about why the approved work was needed at their meeting on Tuesday.

"Frankly, we haven't had any renovations or changes in the office since we went up there in 2005," Stanton said. "The carpet's still the same. It's dirty. The fixtures are still the same. We're trying to do all of our job in that little area. The problem with that is, when you are presenting yourself as a law office to the public, their expectations were much like Commissioner Sellers had been, that at least you would have an office that looked professional, where people weren't crowded in and where there would be some privacy. We don't have that."

Right now, victims have to talk to one lawyer while two others continue to work in the background. With some cases, that is difficult.

"Sometimes it's, they are rape cases," Stanton said. "Sometimes they are children who are there on indecent liberties cases and a lot of the time I go back there for discussions with the victims, the citizens you represent, on homicide cases, on cases of unlawful distribution of controlled substance resulting in death and we're having these conversations about the cases and there are people present. That's not a professional law office."

The plan passed by the commission takes the DA's office off of the fourth floor and puts everybody together. It gives them a conference room and five new offices.&nbsp;

"I can't fill all five offices now, admittedly," Stanton said. "If there are any changes to the courts in the future or any changes to the way we practice, for example, if we're going to have a mental health board, I'm going to need another attorney and it makes sense to have those, to have that done now all at once for the entire courthouse than to wait and try to find space for us later. There are no other spaces for us in the courthouse."

Stanton also noted that the diversion program through the DA's office has raised enough money in the past twenty years so that the DA's office portion of the project would have paid for itself if that office had been fully allowed to retain the funds. The diversion program has raised $1,736,379.52 since 2003.

"I'll be frank, I was disappointed when I heard about the discussion, to a certain extent, because no one asked me any questions," Stanton said. "People didn't come to me and ask me about this. They may have gone to other sources, but nobody came and asked me. This is my department. I'm the person who knows what we need, not someone else, not somebody who never comes to my department, who is making assumptions. I've had a really good relationship with the commission since I've started here. I've been dealing with the commission. I've brought things to the commission, you can ask Randy, Daniel and Ron about this, I've brought things that I didn't need to bring to the commission, just so you knew what I'd be doing. I want that to continue. I would ask that, in the future, if there are questions, if you have concerns about something that's going to be happening that's going to be affecting my office, come to me and ask me about it. Let's talk about it. I want you to have the full information I have, so that you can make the decision the citizens elected you to make."

Ron Hirst, Don Bogner and commission chair Daniel Friesen voted to approve the money. Commissioners John Whitesel and Randy Parks voted against the proposal.

Stanton makes case for renovations

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jim Unruh is facilitating the&nbsp;Bridges Out of Poverty training being held in the Community Room at the Horizons Building in Hutchinson April 12.

"What&nbsp;Bridges Out of Poverty talks about is having folks have access to resources," Unruh said. "Resources could be food, it could be housing, it could be health care, it could be a job. It's the wide range. Each individual person, each individual family, has a different story, has different experiences. Part of our work is community folks meeting folks halfway in between and walking with folks. Relationships are a key part of transformation."

When a person is fighting for daily survival, they think about life differently than someone who knows where their next meal and their place to sleep is coming from.

"If you've been struggling to find resources for a prolonged period of time, it changes how you view the world," Unruh said. "It's a shift from what traditional middle class folks are thinking about, in terms of being future oriented, achievement oriented, that work, education and planning and managing is the way forward. If you're in survival mode, you are just thinking about the now. You are thinking about your key relationships, because you don't have access to things you need or resources, you have access to people and people supporting each other. That gets you into that survival thinking."

Unruh admits that four hours is not really enough to flesh out the concepts, but the goal is to create a hunger to learn more and to get involved.

"Once you introduce the ideas and create a visual of the direction and how people interact, it's based on folks having these a-ha moments," Unruh said. "I didn't realize that, but all of a sudden, it makes sense. On the 12th, I imagine there will be lots of folks saying, oh, yeah, now I get this. It makes sense to me."

The training is from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and is funded by a Community Pathways grant from Blue Cross, Blue Shield.

Training will help get resources to families

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Sleep Tight Foundation is continuing its efforts to raise funds to eradicate bedbugs in Reno County.

"We're having a big need right now," said Monica Warren with the foundation. "It's the season to where these little critters like to spread and so we're here to spread the news about the foundation."

They have about five homes currently on the waiting list and with treatments starting at $700 to up to $3000 depending on the size of the home and the severity of the infestation, it would take around $10,000 or so just to treat the homes they know about. Bedbugs don't care if their environment is clean or dirty. All they need is a warm host and plenty of hiding places.

"You can find them in hotels, in movie theaters, backpacks for little kiddos going to school, they are just everywhere," Warren said. "It doesn't matter."

The group is looking for both large donors and sustaining donors to be able to catch up the families that are currently on the waiting list and then stay ahead of the problem.

"We're going to need funds continually," Warren said. "We're asking for the community to give us continual funds just by donating once a month."

The foundation has figured out that if they had 500 giving units continually giving $10 a month, they could stay ahead of the problem and treat homes while the cost to do so is low. However, as of our interview with Warren, they only have 30 giving units on a sustained basis, which is not enough for even one treatment a month, which is why they have the waiting list.&nbsp;

Sleep Tight Foundation needs both large and small donors

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson told the Board of Education Monday night that they are having trouble filling teaching positions for the coming school year.

"We have about 17 openings," Johnson told the board. "This time last year, we felt pretty confident about our positions being filled. We had one applicant over the last two weeks. We don't have any other applicants coming in."

They also have at least one leadership position to fill.

"Cara Schrag from McCandless is going to move to McPherson," Johnson said. "There's just a lot of key positions in the positions that are out there. We've heard about this crisis coming out of COVID, that there's no teachers and we've heard about it that Overland Park or Blue Valley or some bigger schools, really bigger schools than us, that can't fill their teaching positions."
