HUTCHINSON, Kan. — If there’s one thing that’s important to IdeaTek, it’s access for all Kansans. That commitment extends to the Kansas State Fair, where IdeaTek is sponsoring free gate admission for 10,000 Reno County students and will provide a complimentary internet cafe on-site during the 10-day event.

“We are honored to continue our partnership with the Kansas State Fair and contribute to the annual celebration in diverse ways,” said Megan Shearer, IdeaTek’s vice president of talent, culture, and customer acquisition. “As part of our commitment, IdeaTek created a free hub where fairgoers can connect to the internet, recharge their devices, and cool off.

“Furthermore, we are excited to extend our support by providing 10,000 complimentary tickets to all students in Reno County,” Shearer added. “The Kansas State Fair is the biggest celebration of our state, and it offers unique learning opportunities. We’re happy to support local students by ensuring they have the opportunity to benefit from all that this event has to offer.”

To build excitement for the Fair, IdeaTek staff, along with a special guest – the Fair’s mascot, Ike, the American bison – made a few stops at local schools in late August to deliver tickets.&nbsp;

“The Kansas State Fair’s Board of Directors and staff are so excited to have such a great Fair and Community Partner in IdeaTek,” said Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz. “With their assistance, we are able to bring Reno County school-age kids to the Fair at no charge, which allows them the opportunity to “Celebrate All Things Kansas”!&nbsp; We appreciate their continued support!”

The official Kansas State Fair started in 1913 and is a celebration of all things Kansas. This year’s state fair is Sept. 8-17.

This is the second year IdeaTek will have a physical presence at the fair with their new internet cafe.&nbsp;

The cafe, which features shade, seating, prizes, charging stations, and free public Wi-Fi, will be located across from the Domestic Arts Building and is available to all fairgoers.

Based in Buhler, IdeaTek is dedicated to the mission of connecting underserved communities with affordable high-speed fiber internet.&nbsp;

“Whether you need to check in with work or want to stay in touch with friends and family — IdeaTek can help keep you connected,” Shearer said. “We know the cellular system can often get overloaded on crowded days, and a public Wi-Fi location hasn’t been offered at the fair in the past. This is one way we can help give back to the Fair and its patrons.”

IdeaTek enriches Kansas State Fair experience: Free student tickets, plus Wi-Fi access for all

Fire color guard posts colors at Royals game

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the&nbsp;"Midtown Shopping Center" on the east side of the 1300 block of North Main Street.

 In the mid-1930s, Arthur Valentine partnered with the Ablah Hotel Supply Co. and started manufacturing small, portable lunch buildings in Wichita. He produced at least 2,000 "Valentine Diners" in various designs in a 40-year career. 

They were very small and had fewer than a dozen seating stools placed around a serving counter. There are still many in use today. The first photo shows one of those in 1959.

It was first placed there in 1946 by Charles Hall and called the "Chef System Lunch #3" — addressed as 1308-A N. Main. It changed hands many times with the last being in 1965, called the "Chef Cafe" and owned by Everett Waite. 

Next to that was "Friendship House Gifts," owned by Walter Pace at 1306 N. Main — 1959 was the last year for that business. That's when Dick Langenwalter of Reno Hardware, just to the South at 1304 N. Main, purchased the properties and expanded his business into those slots. The second photo shows the same properties after Westlake Hardware purchased the business.

The third photo shows the 1306-1308 N. Main business today, still Westlake Hardware, with the property being owned by RENOS L.L.C.  c/o Barbara Lappin.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch - Then & Now Collection - Vol. 34

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kay Harrison, who lives at 100 West 17th, came to speak to the Hutchinson City Council at their public input session on Tuesday about the bike boulevard on Washington and people using it, maybe in ways not intended by the designers.

"They are from age, maybe eight, on up," Harrison said. "I don't think they know. They don't respect any stop signs. Our corner, I bet there is 90 to 95% just zoom across 17th. There was an old fella that I saw going down with a three wheeler and pulling a cart on the sidewalk. He turned off of the sidewalk on to Washington going north. He put up his hand to stop the traffic. Luckily, the guy coming from Main Street was going slow enough and he did stop."

The traditional bicyclist is not who Harrison sees, most of the time.

"To me, a bicycle is a two wheel bicycle and you pedal," Harrison said. "Very few of those come by. They are all motorized now. They do the battery motors on scooters, on skateboards and on bicycles of all sizes. No regard to any direction. They are all over the place."

The incident that prompted Harrison to come to the council happened when she was driving.

"I almost hit a girl, which really was the limit," Harrison said. "I was going south on Washington from 25th and all of a sudden this girl, I'm guessing around 12, was on a motorized, small...she was actually too big for it and she did not respect the stop sign on the side street. Thank heavens I wasn't a minute sooner or I wasn't going fast. It scared me to death. She never once realized. She just zoomed right past that stop sign right in front of me. This is happening way too many times. The same thing on 17th on that ridiculous roadblock. Someone is going to get killed."

There's not a lot the city can do except try to raise awareness, according to Mayor Jon Richardson.

"I don't know how we would...other than a public service campaign in regards to making sure people know, no matter what age or vehicle, there are rules of the road that you have to follow and abide by," Richardson said. "We do have a little bit of a different situation now that these bicycles are motorized. Maybe people don't realize that even bicycles need to follow the rules of the road, let alone a motorized bicycle."

Richardson notes that the 17th and Washington island is a regular subject that he hears from constituents about a lot, but he's not sure what the implications would be of taking it out at this point.

City online payments will not work Sept. 8 and 9

RENO COUNTY — The You Drink You Drive You Lose campaign has ended. 

During the previous two and a half weeks Reno County Sheriff Deputies conducted saturation patrols to enforce Kansas impaired driving laws. 

During the campaign, officers completed 47 traffic stops, conducted 6 standardized field sobriety tests, and made 3 DUI arrests. 

Additionally, Deputies wrote 4 citations and gave 60 verbal warnings for other traffic offenses.&nbsp;

Reno County Sheriff's Office outlines work during You Drink, You Drive, You Lose

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County will hold a public hearing at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 in the Veterans Room of the courthouse located at 206 West 1st Avenue, Hutchinson, Kansas, to present and discuss the proposed improvements for the wastewater system improvements project related to the Yoder and HABIT sewer districts.

1. Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements consisting of the construction new lagoons with all appurtenances for treatment of raw sewage from Reno County Sewer District Nos. 201 and 202 with an estimated amount of $2,892,600.00.

2. Sewer Collection System Improvements consisting of the installation of 2,905’ of 10” cured in place pipe, 12,635’ of 8” cured in place pipe and 205’ of 6” cured in place pipe with appurtenances to provide for the transportation of raw sewage to the lagoons.

Two lift stations will be installed to move the sewage from District Nos. 201 and 202 to the lagoon site with an estimated amount of $1,514,000.

The anticipated amount of the loan application request will be $6,133,100.00 the total project cost is estimated at. $6,133,100.00 The anticipated increase in sewer use charges will be discussed at the public hearing. The proposed improvements will be explained and comments by the public will be considered. Oral and written comments will be accepted. The Peoples Bank and Trust Community Stage located at West 2nd and Main will feature local acts on Friday evening. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — More than $500 million in unclaimed property and a chance to win $529 into a Learning Quest 529 education savings account will be offered at the State Treasurer’s Office booth at this year’s Kansas State Fair, according to State Treasurer Steven Johnson.

“We are excited to bring the State Treasurer’s Office to the Kansas State Fair once again this year,” Johnson said. “We invite all fair-goers to stop by our booth in the Meadowlark Building to search their name in our unclaimed property database, and enter our giveaway to win $529 into a Learning Quest 529 education savings account for themselves or a loved one.”

Johnson’s office administers the state’s unclaimed property program, which currently holds more than $500 million waiting to be claimed. One in 10 people is estimated to have unclaimed property, which could include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and safe deposit boxes. Kansans can search the online database any time at&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascash.ks.gov/" target="_blank">https://KansasCash.ks.gov</a>.

The State Fair also coincides with September’s recognition as College Savings Month. Johnson’s office will have information at the booth on the savings programs administered by his office, including the Learning Quest 529 plan, KIDS matching grant program, ABLE savings plan, Kansas ScholarShop, and First-Time Home Buyer Savings Accounts. Staff from Johnson’s office will be on hand to answer questions about these programs, and visitors to the booth will be invited to enter to win $529 towards a Learning Quest 529 account. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System (HRHS) announced Wednesday the permanent hiring of Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Jed Liuzza. This change will take effect on September 18, 2023. Liuzza’s responsibilities will include Human Resources, Quality, Risk Management, Compliance, Infection Prevention, Marketing and the Foundation.

Liuzza began working as Interim CHRO for the system back on March 13th of this year. He comes with more than 25 years of experience in leadership roles within varying healthcare systems. Prior to coming on board at HRHS, he was the Regional Vice President-Human Resources for SSM Health in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

In his time here, so far, Liuzza rebuilt and structured a new human resources team. This sets up every team member of the organization with resources and business partners to assist in their success within their role and system. In addition, he has launched a reform of a multifaceted software system that provides great efficiencies across multiple departments including finance, supply chain and HR. This will result in financial savings, streamlined workflows and empowerment to all team members.

“I fully believe that what Jed has already accomplished for HRHS is just a prelude to what is to come from his leadership over our human resources department,” state Nick Baldetti, Acting CEO.

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — According to a social media post from the McPherson County Sheriff's office, Saturday morning, the Sheriff's Office responded to Maxwell State Lake for a report of a found body.

According to a Wednesday release from the sheriff's office, the body is that of 61-year-old Randy B. Gepner of McPherson.

Preliminary investigation suggests Gepner was in a single vehicle accident that resulted in his vehicle entering the water and he drowned.

Broadacres to close for bridge work

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 Board of Education is holding a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to interview Construction Manager at Risk candidates. That concept has become popular among school districts looking to know how to budget.

"It's been around for a while," Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman said. "It's just lately, it's become a really popular way of doing construction. That is, you hire a construction manager. They sort of guarantee the project to be done at a maximum price. After they get all the drawings and stuff, they give you a set price, guaranteed not to go over it. There's some advantages to using the Construction Manager at Risk right now."

The board will be interviewing three candidate firms.

"That is in closed session," Couchman said. "The interviews cannot happen in public session. You'll see a lot of executive sessions in there, where we go into executive session, interview them, come out, go into another executive session, interview the next company."

Couchman doesn't believe the district can go wrong, whatever the board's choice may be.

"All three of them have a fantastic reputation," Couchman said. "We're looking at similar projects. We're looking at how well we all just sort of get along in the interview, too. You have a very close relationship while all these projects are going on with each other. Also, how soon they can get to work with us. This is a busy time for construction companies. We are kind of on a timeline."

Particularly when it comes to the remodeling of the Masonic Lodge building for the purposes of the Ad Astra Academies, the sooner that work can get done, the better for the overall growth of that program.

Buhler school board seeking construction manager

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson went over its agreement for 2024 with the International Association of Fire Fighters on Tuesday.

"Formal negotiations with the IAFF started this year back on February 23," said HR Director Tom Sanders. "After six meetings, we were able to reach a tentative agreement with them on August 2. Most of our negotiations revolved around economic issues. We've experienced a very big acceleration in terms of wage growth in the firefighter world. In this region of Kansas, it's been particularly acute."

The union and the city agreed to work on getting a job description back they haven't had for a while.

"HFD leadership, you might recall from last year, was looking to reimplement the fire engineer job class. We haven't had it since about 2018 or 2019. Chief Beer really felt like that was important for the operations of his group and the safety of the personnel and public safety. We needed to work through the economic effects of adding that new job class in there, which we were successfully able to do."

The additional job description did have an effect on the overall package.

"Movement of the firefighter wage scales up by 4.5% next year, we reduced the top end by 10.4%," Sanders said. "That's a direct result of having that fire engineer job class being added going into the middle. Then, the fire captains had the most dramatic increases from 2023. That will go up 15.9% and the top end will increase 4.5%, bringing the bottom end up quite a bit for the fire captains."

Wage compression is an issue for firefighters, as well.

"We were able to work through with the IAFF a methodology to still reflect performance differences and those kinds of things, but provide appropriate spacing between employees."

The merit pay matrix is up 4.25% for firefighters in 2024, but they also allowed for the formalizing of a policy they hope to aid in retention of new firefighters.

"It costs a lot to outfit a new firefighter with all the PPE," Sanders said. "It's customized gear and all that stuff. We spend at least a couple thousand dollars to do that. One of the things that's been in place at the fire department for, I think two years now, is they have a repayment agreement that if the employee leaves within three years, they pay all or a portion of that cost back to us. That's been happening on a more informal basis. We wanted to put that in the contract, just so we have clear rules of understanding on that."

The hope is that these provisions will allow for the department to continue to attract and retain solid candidates in the coming years.

City outlines agreement with firefighters

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson went over its agreement for 2024 with the Fraternal Order of Police at the City Council meeting on Tuesday.

"We started negotiations back on February 23," said HR Director Tom Sanders. "We had six formal session to meet and confer. On July 1, we were able to come to agreement. With the national shortage of police officers, it's been a challenging few years, in terms of putting together adequate compensation packages to attract and retain officers. This year, I think we've done a really, really good job of coming up with a good package that both sides feel really good about and also keep up with where we're at in the market today and where it's projected to go next year."

"We are moving the officer scale up next year by 7.7%," Sanders said. "The top of the scale's going to move up by 10.6%. The police sergeant scale is not moving as much. It's going up 2% and the top end is going up 3.6%. There's new language that codifies management's discretion to design, alter or eliminate hiring or milestone bonuses and also to make them contingent upon a formal repayment agreement, so if an employee leaves within a certain amount of time, we could recoup some of that cost."

Another issue when new officers come in at much higher rates is wage compression, where those who have served longer are not making as much more, comparatively.

"We came up with a plan, working with the FOP, that I think addresses that in a fair and adequate way," Sanders said. "The factors that we're looking at were time in job, of course and then differences in past performance. We didn't want to wipe out those differences that employees had that were performing really well, versus those that were successful, but just not quite as high and then also recognizing prior law enforcement experience."

This agreement is already at work to help keep police in Hutchinson.

"We had requested through the city manager that we be able to implement these changes for the FOP group as soon as the FOP approved the contract, which they did right away," Sanders said. "We were able to get those implemented on July 30. I think that will really help us with current retention and recruitment."

The merit pay matrix for next year is adjusted to a 4.25% overall budget, which is up from 3.5% this year," Sanders said. "The variable pay programs under Article 17, we negotiated new language with the union to allow for SRO officers to be eligible for designated unit pay, during those periods of time when they are working the full duties of a detective, and also for an extended period of time like Christmas break, summer breaks, things like that."

Sanders said that this is an aggressive package, but it is one that is necessary and needed to stay competitive with other jurisdictions.

"If you want to participate in the poker run, you will want to show up at Salty Cycles at 129 East Sherman at about 9:30 a.m.," said Casey Ensz with Bretz Injury Law. "The registration will start at 9:30 a.m., kickstands up about 10:30 a.m. Then, you'd ride the poker run route until you get back to Bretz Injury Law. We'll have some food there ready to go. We'll have some door prizes. We'll have some raffle prizes. Obviously, we'll give out the prizes for the poker run itself."

Poker run stops include Sterling City Park, Shane Love Insurance Agency in Arlington, Shep Chevrolet in Haven, the Reno County Veterans’ Memorial in South Hutchinson, and Bretz Injury Law in Hutchinson. Poker run coming up Saturday to benefit Veterans Memorial

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Feel the squish of the grapes in the time-honored tradition of grape stomping as you help celebrate the grape and farm winery industries in Kansas. The Kansas Department of Agriculture will host the 17th annual Kansas Grape Stomp on Saturday, September 9, at 1:00 p.m. in Gottschalk Park at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

Gather around the grape tubs to watch state and local leaders and others stomp grapes to salute the Kansas grape and farm winery industries. The competitive stomp-off will lead the event and an open stomp for all Kansas State Fair attendees will follow.

As of August 2023, there are 50 farm wineries throughout Kansas.

KDA is committed to advocating for and promoting the agriculture industry, the state’s largest industry, employer and economic contributor, and encourages all fairgoers to attend the grape stomp to have fun while learning about the grape and farm winery industries in Kansas.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture will host the 17th annual Kansas Grape Stomp on Saturday, September 9, at 1:00 p.m. in Gottschalk Park at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.Gather around the grape tubs to watch state and local leaders and others stomp grapes to salute the Kansas grape and farm winery industries. 17th Annual Kansas Grape Stomp at the Kansas State Fair Saturday

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The 9th Judicial District CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) are interested in having a Citizen Review Board (CRB) in McPherson. 

A CRB is composed of trained community volunteers who serve as advisors to the judge on selected cases concerning children who are in out-of-home placements. 

Simply stated, the purpose of a CRB's case review is to assure that children do not linger unnecessarily in foster care and to promote a permanent and safe home for each child reviewed.

CASA looking for McPherson volunteers

Late summer on our central Kansas farm has consisted of keeping our crops irrigated, checking cattle, working ground and the start of fall harvest.Since the kids are back in school, my main focus has been monopolizing large tracks of uninterrupted time during the day working in our office while my husband is out and about checking fields, switching water gates and running equipment.

In the mornings, my husband usually heads out in the side-by-side to check irrigation and switch water gates while I get the kids ready for school. During the summer mornings, he’d usually have one of the kids with him helping and keeping him company. Since school has started, my husband’s main helper is now our farm dog, Rosie.

Rosie has a constant known presence on our farm. Whether she’s barking at mysterious creatures in the night, welcoming visitors to our home with dirty pawprints, dumping out trashcans or harassing the barn cats, we can’t help but love that dog. Rosie is truly a gem of a farm dog and definitely takes all of her jobs very seriously.

When she was a puppy, we wired a plastic egg crate onto the front of the four-wheeler that she’d ride in while checking irrigation.

With her two little paws propped up on the edge of her box, you’d see her nose pointed high sniffing the air and her ears blowing in the wind as my husband would zoom down irrigation roads.When she no longer fit in her crate, she’d ride behind the driver. Something she still does to this day.Rosie is a staple in the farm truck when my husband or I are driving. Wherever we go, Rosie generally goes as well. She’s claimed the front passenger seat as her own and will begrudgingly make allowances for others to sit in her seat by scooting over to the middle and sitting right next to the driver only if the passenger will give her scratches behind her ears.When we take the side-by-side out to check cattle, Rosie will only allow a passenger her seat if she can still either prop her front paws up onto the dashboard to get a full view of what’s ahead of her or if she can lay underneath the passenger’s legs and stick her head out the side of the UTV.Rosie also rides in combines and tractors for hours with one of her humans. One might see her on the lookout for wildlife to bark at while properly sitting at attention in the buddy seat as the tractor makes a turn at the edge of the field.&nbsp;While sitting in the buddy seat, she’s also been known to place her paw on my husband’s leg while he drives a combine for hours keeping him company.
