HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Pamela Zieburtz opened up an art gallery in downtown Hutchinson called Wabi-Sabi Artspace and had a special event for its Grand Opening on Third Thursday. Zieburtz is the sole artist of every piece in the gallery. She said folks who visit her gallery should associate the name Wabi-Sabi with "finding something extraordinary in the ordinary.

One of Zieburtz favorite pieces in her gallery is a photo of a lady named Ms. Cathy who is washing dishes at a restaurant in the North Georgia mountains. She said the ordinary actions displayed in the photograph represent the Wabi-Sabi meaning well.

"She was doing something ordinary," said Zieburtz. "Something very humble, and she was content and I just enjoyed witnessing her presence."

In addition to photography, Zieburtz has multiple types of art mediums on display. Those include mixed media and one she is currently trying to perfect called Encaustic.
Encaustic art uses hot wax to create pieces. Zieburtz took time Thursday on the grand opening of her gallery to explain how she crafted one of her Encaustic pieces.

"I took a Hibiscus flower from my garden and applied it to a carved wax background and applied other hot wax to it," Zieburtz said. "I made my own rust solution and applied that on top to beautify the whole piece and you can see I've added texture and that seems to be a favorite."
Pricing is labeled on each piece at Wabi-Sabi for those who wish to add to their collection. Zieburtz also has a career in interior design. More information about her past projects in design and art is available at simplygoodhotelsdesign.com.
Wabi-Sabi Artspace is located at 16 E. 2nd Ave. The gallery is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the afternoon. For more information on the gallery, you can call (678) 938-3059.
