TOPEKA, Kan. — U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) State Director for Kansas Rural Development Christy Davis today announced that USDA is investing $2,383,384 in domestic fertilizer production through a cooperative in Canton, Kansas.
“The USDA is committed to Kansas agriculture and agri-business,” Davis said. “This investment will increase domestic fertilizer production and strengthen our farming communities.”
Today’s announcement is part of a larger national announcement which include 11 other states through the Fertilizer Production Expansion Program (FPEP). This program provides grants to independent business owners to help them modernize equipment, adopt new technologies, build production plants and more. The details of the Kansas project are:
· A $2,382,384 grant will provide financing for construction and equipment of a new replacement facility in Canton. Mid-Kansas Cooperative Association, a farmer owned cooperative with 11,000 members and 600 employees will construct the new state of the art facility to provide more efficient access to customers in the region. The facility will support a production of 3,000 tons of liquid fertilizer annually, of which will be made available to 250 local producers. The project is expected to create eight additional positions.
